Let's talk some more about this. Translation is on-going, but the existing pages have been edited for clarity.

Raws: http://www.mediafire.com/?ma662073xgs1lnf
Translation: https://docs.google.com/document/d/13I4L5UGoVV88G4v9Ax7j_2gTJvx5efA4CzYs_Yf-AF0/edit

More importantly, we were thinking of how to put other Magic decks and their players in the manga, with generally more interesting results than what writers were actually paid to make. So far we've got a council influenced by planeswalkers and others, a teacher who willingly sides with Phyrexia, a former Timmy tempted by the Eldrazi's power, and a lot more.

How would your favorite deck make it into this?

Manga designed to sell toys is not exactly new.

Honestly im stunned it took Japan this long to apply the YGO treatment to MAgic considering that theyve done it to ALL the other popular CCGs in Japan. And considering the VERY correct play by the Blue chick with the EoT Think Twice into a miracle Temporal Mastery, allowing her to win the game, it wont blatantly disregrad the rules for the card game like YGO the show did at first.

On the bright side, it seems like they're going to follow the actual rules of the game, so that's cool.

That assumes the show is based out of Ravnica. I'm talking the actual student council here planejumps to places like Ravnica.

So then the UG-playing science teacher has to cover for all their absences while they planeswalk. Well, at least until the New Phyrexia arc.

For the first arc or so.

Eventually, he'll be forced to team up with the Student Council against the Eldrazi and the Phyrexians. The more he fights alongside the council, the more he grows to understand the concepts of friendship, camaraderie and mercy, and he decides to make a heel face turn...

You get an extra turn for casting him, and it's ludicrously easy to hit 15 mana in commander fairly early.

Trust me, he's banned as a Commander for a good reason. Pick a fun commander instead.

Emrakul is banned because otherwise he would be in every deck.

Colorless means anyone can play him, and he has ridiculous board impact. He's guaranteed to get a hit in if you hard cast him. And no, 15 mana is not hard to get to in EDH.

Also, games started boiling down to 'get to 5 mana, cast Bribery, get Emrakul, gg'

That is absolutely what that character would act like. He gets everyone scared of his general, but it's all a big bait and switch as he whittles you down with... well, whatever else is in the deck.

Alternatively, a good one-shot antagonist would be a guy playing Reaper King with a deck full of changelings and clones etc. Not sure how to work "Don't Fear the Reaper" into a manga, but eh.

>>20091357

>>20091276
Well, first you have to establish who the five council members are.

Blue (the president) is as she is in the manga: ever-collected, ever confident, smart, strong, worthy of the position of student council president. Naturally, being president and with that standing bet (whoever beats me in a round of Magic gets a date with me), she's probably the strongest member.

Black is in >>20088425

Green is the nice one, the pleasant individual who embodies the green ideal of harmony. She sounds like a greenhorn (hurr) at Magic, but she catches on quickly. Then again, she thinks Duskdale Wurm is cute. She probably plays traditional green stompy.

The white player is the "arbiter of justice" type. He believes in order and unity, a real optimist. That said, order sometimes necessitates control (if that collar is to be believed, unless that's just Black dicking around). White has weenies and lifegain with some control.

The red player throws me off, so someone can do him. Some variant of Red Deck Wins (RDW) plainly comes to mind, but I'm not sure how well that meshes.
>>
>>20091555
Not sure.
>>
>>20091563
I would imagine he starts out as a calculating type that loves red's agressiveness, but he often gets frustrated quickly or runs out of options too early, possibly the most likely member of the student council to be the Worf (is shown to be incredibly strong, but is then continually beaten by newcomers to show how strong THEY are).

Probably converts to Izzet in season 2.
>>

>"What?"
>"If you don't beat me by then, those 'couple goblins' will burn you alive while their MANY brethren overrun you and your creatures."

Mongrel was practically a pauper deck anyways.

>>
>>20093926

Also, play blue with less counters. Give them enough to display it as the strength of the color, but the appeal does tend to revolve around creatures. Plus constant countering would make the games boring from a storytelling perspective.
>>
>>20094006
Also some Innistrad stuff, I guess, since they had those miracle cards.

Well, outside of creatures, every color has their own gimmicks that need to be showcased.
Red needs to show the 20,000 ways to burn a man to death.
Blue needs to show counter and control.
White needs to show lifegain and dudes (with some control).
Green needs to show buffs.
Black needs to show how it does a little of everything at a cost.

It'd be plenty interesting, I think, to show a character playing a full blue counter deck.

>"Fufufufufufufu. You cannot beat me if you cannot cast even a single spell."
>>
I can already hear the stereotypical anime dialogue whenever the protagonist is running low on life. "Tch, it can't be helped....I'll have to use 'THAT'!" And then he busts out a Worldfire
>>
>>20094094
Buffs are nothing to green compared to mana ramps and big creatures.
>>
>>20094156
I think it can be plenty dramatic to see Midori the green newbie get stonewalled by a blue counterfag and try to scramble to mount an offensive before she's either whittled away or milled to death.
>"Unlike your fleeting spells, my monster are permanent, and they have to get through sooner or later!"
>>
>>20094206
Reiterated, then:
>Green needs to show off buffs, mana ramp, and just how STOMPY its creatures are.
That's what separates it from other colors. Other colors have lots of dudes or gimmicky dudes. Green has BIG DUDES, and sometimes, Occam's razor has to be proven right once in a while.

I feel Niv-Mizzets would be 2 paragraphs long

I kinda want to get a character sheet going for the people we're making up.

>>

Honestly, his flavor text works perfectly.

>she says, as she plays another creature.
>"Nope," says her opponent, dropping another counter, "I play Blue. I'll never run out of counters. If there are none in my hand I can just play an instant to draw more! And statistically, I only have one more turn until I have all the pieces to one of my many instant win combos!"
>>
>>20094304

Just to rub it in, he uses a Palinchron combo.

>"I think that this shows abilities trump power. But hey, maybe you can get some Eternal Witnesses or something. It won't make your deck any worse."
>>
>"Fufufufu....You really searched your library this turn?"
>"Yeah, What of it?"
>"With that simple, unassuming act, you've triggered my ARCHIVE TRAP! I'll relish your look of despair as the last of your library is wiped away!"
>"What? Thirteen cards? But my library has more cards than that!"
>"You didn't let me finish! Behold....TWINCAST! Now, Archive Trap's effect will be DOUBLED!"
>"NAAANIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII???"
>>
>>20094304
Then she comes next game and, having learned about Active Player Advantage, forces a creature through.

Or just cheats with Thrun/Vexing Shusher, whichever.

When I play MTG, I don't play to win.

I play to draw. Drawing pisses people off more than when I win. So I count it as a double-win in my books.

My favorite strategy is using Daru Spiritualist to gain infinite life.
>>
>>20094454
Forgot my point. My point was, I should be the villain of a card game anime. The world's most annoying gamer.
>>
>>20094454
>>20094465
MtG teaches you how to play politics better than Model UN.
>>
>>20094465
Make it so that all of the main characters are semi-newbies, who have normal high school lives and are just getting into MtG. But they have some talent; show their normal lives, like part-time jobs and stuff to get money to buy cards, and then ahve the last ten or fifteen chapters be their first tournament against Yuuki 'The Mind Sculptor' Aizawa, a boy from a neighboring school who has played for years and has amassed a lot of expensive and powerful cards.
>>
"I mana-weave to ensure my deck runs at optimum efficiency. My black and blue control will leave your pathetic little burn deck... black and blue!" *giggle*

>Burn player slowly and quietly removes a revolver from his pocket and places it neatly on the table next to his library.

"Wh-Why would you bring a weapon to a friendly--"
"You're cheating."

>Suddenly riffle shuffles. Riffle shuffles everywhere.
>U/B player cries silently before rolling a die to start the game.

----another idea----

>Look, I know this has been an INCREDIBLY confusing game so I'll make this easy on you; do you have a counterspell in hand? No? Okay then! COMMANDER SUMMON: NIV-MIZZET, THE FIREMIND!

And so the MCs place decently in the tournament, with one MC (probably U/B or something?) coming to the finals against the Rival. Rival wins, they learn a great lesson in tournament play, and the next volume begins with the characters going to other card shops outside their district to play and learn.
>>
>>20094609

>"You'll thank me for this. And this. Possibly this. Probably not that. Yeah, you can have this. Commander Summon: Zedruu the Greathearted.

>"I'm sorry... you've lost. By allowing my Platinum Angel to survive one turn, you have sealed your fate."
>"Wha?!"
>"The Angel's unique ability is well known, but I have discovered its true power, and its true purpose. It is the key to summoning the forgotten commander, the entity that was deemed impossible to command without sacrificing one's own life. But this platinum wonder shields me from the summoning backlash. Now, prepare yourself for death!"
>"The black arts' culmination, the bane of all that lives! Gods and microbes, all shall fall before me!"
>COMMANDER SUMMON: PHAGE THE UNTOUCHABLE

>"I have reduced your life points to 3 little rat, one more ferocious attack from my Wild Nacatl will finish you for good nyan~."

>"Kekekekekekekekeke."

>"Nani!? You laugh at the face of defeat?"

>"Silly pussy cat, swing your claws and hiss as hard as you want, you will never kill off all my precious precious pets, I cast relentless rats."

>"Impossible! We are only allowed 4 copies of a single spell! Nyoro-n~?"

>"Silly kitten, we rats are without number, where there is one rat, many more follow! BEHOLD, The power of thrumming Stone gives my relentless rats ripple 4, despair as your fate is sealed!"

>"NYAN DESU KA~"

Can someone think of one for Sakashima, the Impostor?

I've always thought that MTG would start branding itself with either a comic/manga or cartoon/anime, and I kind of like it. I never quite grasped the concept of how a duel actually plays out, in like, fantasy terms
>>
>>20095448
Players are planeswalkers. They have magic fights where they summon creatures and call on magic that they know and remember.
>>
>>20095470

What about lands? Do you summon lands? How much of an area do each land take up? Do you "channel" the lands mentally? Do you have little mana orbs that you use to cast spells?
>>
>>20095156
i chuckled
>>
>>20095502
I think the common idea is that you recall the lands that are important to you, which empower you to cast spells. There's a couple narratives that describe a planeswalker duel in action.

>>20095502
Land cards are just places you're in tune with. There are no mana orbs. Read the Brothers War if you want a good example.
>>
>>20095502
Magic has been around long enough and undergone enough revisions that there's a lot of inconsistencies in how the cards relate to the fluff. Sometimes you're recalling the memories of the land and channeling its essence, sometimes you're physically there, etc.

Question
There was a black creature, I think from the Zendikar block, that you either tapped or tapped and sacrificed to remove all counters from target permanent
What was the name of it?
>>
>>20096456
Vampire Hexmage.
>>
>>20096473
Why thank you good sir.
Another question: Would that work on a card with Suspend?
>>
>>20096498
No. A suspended card is not a permanent, it is a spell.
>>
>>20096570
Actually, scratch that, not sure if it's a spell or just a card removed from the game.

It is definitely not targetable by Hexmage, though.
>>
>>20096570 is correct.

Hexmage works best with Dark Depths to net you a 20/20 indestructible flyer.
>>
>>20096592
Fuckery. There goes my Jhoira's Hexmage Legacy idea.

>All returns to nature in the end, and with nature I shall make my army of the meek. Can you stand against the coming of the many? Commander Summon: Ghave, Guru of Spores.

>All returns to nature in the end, and with nature I shall make my booze. Can you stand against the coming of the drunkenness? Commander Summon: Aghave, Guru of Tequila!
