You were floating in an ocean of blue. Nothing in front of you, nothing above or below. You were floating, wading through the water without support.

Your thoughts jumbled, your body numb, you just sit there. You wait out your existence, waiting for something to occur. Waiting for someone to free you from this confined space.

Ah, you remember now, your home.

Family, friends, a childhood, all of that still exists. So what were you doing in this ocean? You clear your head of all thoughts. You focus on the past.

A magic circle, a cry for help, and now you're here.

You were being moved...

The world becomes clear. You move your hands. Your eyes fall down to your body. There are no breasts, so the only conclusion is that your male. That's right, a man. The merky water before you has an affect on your mind, so you do your best to shake it off. Clenching your hands, moving your feet, you try to escape this azure prison.

You squint your eyes. In an instant, your engulfed in a bright white light. "By word of the contract," the voice sounds serene, "I bind you by my hand." the voice demands. You can't fight it. Your body lifts into the air, and the white devours you.

"What?" you finally mutter the first thing that comes to mind.

"By my word, you are my Guardian!" that voice again.

The light dims down, soon revealing your surroundings. A large, spacious room with greenery growing up the walls. Book shelves that look as though they haven't been used in centuries, mold on the ground and the ceiling. What sticks out, however, is the maiden standing before you. A strange glow on the back of her hand, a determined look in her eye.

The last thing you notice, however, is that you're sitting in the middle of a magical glyph with runes circling on the outside.

"Where the hell am I?" you do your best to suppress your panic. The sudden shift in scenery, your foggy memories, it happened so sudden. So many questions, no answers. The only thing you find is panic.

"You're in the forest of Vernengard, the library to be precise. This is the Guardian Circle used to summon, well, guardians." she extends a hand out to assist you.

You grit your teeth.

A word you've never heard of before. You understood 'Guardian' and 'Circle', but Vernengard? Where was that? The combination of confusion, stress and anger build up in your fist. "You're going to offer me a filthy hand like that?!"

"Huh?"

"HAH!" you immediately stand up and smash your hand into the summoner's face.

Blood and saliva spill from her mouth as she falls to the ground in a thud.

"W-why did you hit me?" she stands up, wiping her chin clean.

This is actually a totally meta-game thing, but it's an important one. If the GM is going to throw a shit-fit over one improprietous act, it's better that I know it and can ditch out on the thread right now. I'm not really interested in living out a sadomasochistic fantasy even if it is a more subtle one, and being able to punch the summoner quickly establishes that this isn't such a fantasy.

On an in-character level, if we CAN punch her and she freaks out (reasonably) we make up some bullshit about how she resembled our ancestral enemy, but seeing as how she isn't shooting lasers out of her eyes right now we were probably mistaken. Or whatever. If we can't, then I'm dropping out of the thread anyway.

Goddammit. Throwing the punch as anything other than our very first action means we can't pass it off as a visceral reaction, making it significantly harder to apologize for.

Oh, well, maybe we can still spin this our way.

"As though I would ever lend my aid to the foul creatures of Verminguard!"

And then when she protests that we got the name wrong, we apologize.

"As though I would ever lend my aid to the foul creature of Verminguard!" you raise your hand into the air in victory. The girl, in reaction, stands up and shakes her head in denial.

"It's Vernengard, NOT VERMINGUARD! Ouch." the pain in her mouth returns. She places a hand over it. A white light emits from her open palm and the wound suddenly vanishes.

"Oh, right, sorry. Just trying to..." you remember that endless ocean, and sweat forms on your brow. "Nightmares, and I'm jumpy. I wasn't sure if this was real or not, so sorry." you bow in apology.

"What kind of nightmares?"

By giving it a chance and seeing what they do with it. You can't react to every action you consider unexpected, unusual, and/or unwise by ignoring it outright, because then you've totally deprived your players of the ability to interact with the world. Besides which, establishing that you are capable of retaliation against your summoner is something I would actually want to do in this situation.
>>
>>20115478

> "I would know all you know, summoner. But first - What is your name, my lady?"

Oh look, yet another /tg/ Quest thread that, when the response was to make the character male, introduced a fairly cute yet very powerful female character who will probably become a love interest later on.

Tell me again which thread this was? It's like I've seen this before.
>>
So far we are kind of a boisterous asshole. Let's stop being that. We've just been summoned into unfamiliar territory. We should not be striking triumphant poses under any circumstances. We should be on our toes and wary for potential attack. Especially since we just got summoned to be a guardian and thus might presumably end up guarding people from stuff at any moment.

Anyways, who is she, why did she bring us here. Also, GM, what can we remember about before? Do we have no memory of the past, are we from modern Earth, from Generic Fantasy World #28694301, what?
>>
>>20115509
Shut up and enjoy the ride.
>>
>>20115519
Why should we even care. We've been summoned, but so far there's nothing to indicate that we're tied to our summoner.
No wards to protect her from us, and apparently no way to make us follow her instructions.

So let's just leave.
>>
>>20115478
"Well this has been interesting time alright, but excuse me, i have dragons to murder and a king to protect"
Proceed to leave
>>
>>20115548

To where? Nothing's saying we can unsummon ourselves, and we should at least hear her out, precisely BECAUSE she has no power over us and thus we lose nothing by establishing in her the belief that we're willing to help her (or at least consider it).

Also because that is the premise of the thread and if you didn't want to run with the premise of the thread you should not have posted in it.

"What is your name? We have to get introductions out of the way." you keep calm and take the best course of action in the situation. Getting introductions out of the way, get your questions answered one by one. It'll go smoothly.

"My name is Cadencia. What's yours?"

"I don't remember." your memories were still somewhere in that ocean. You only remember the frame, not the whole picture. The world that you remembered, however, didn't have a library like this. There were cars, there were skyscrapers, people doing their daily jobs. You went to school, got average grades. That's it. Nothing special, well nothing special you can remember. That place was called 'Earth', though.

"Hey, *****, how were finals?"

"Oh, not that bad." you scratch your head with the back of your hand. No, scratched.

Your memory goes blank, and you find yourself standing there, in the same magical circle, staring at the girl by the name of Cadencia. "Hello?" she waves her hand to get your attention.

"Nothing, nothing." you grab her hand and place it down to where it belongs. "Anyway, why was I summoned?"

"To protect Strahaven and Vernengard."

>What is a Strahaven?
>What is Vernengard?
>What to do?
>>
>>20115594

Because having already determined my ability to influence the world outside of rigid GM expectations and that this is most likely not some kinky fetish quest, I don't really have any further desire to mangle the GM's plot just because. Sure, I don't intend to slavishly follow the plot at expense of my own motivations and goals for the world, but since I know jack shit about the world right now, my only goal is to learn more about it. So I'm staying here and asking questions.
>>
>>20115575

>Also because that is the premise of the thread and if you didn't want to run with the premise of the thread you should not have posted in it.

The premise of a quest thread is making it so the protagonist has a DRIVE to actually give a damn. The most important thing that could happen in the early development of a quest thread is the protagonist, for one reason or another (be it gold, glory, no other option or it's their actual job) decides that listening is in their best interest.

All she's shown to us is "Listen to me I want you to listen" which is, to be blunt, not a good argument to have. Think of it like in real life; you are walking down the street when some random woman walks up to you and says, "let me tell you about my beliefs and what I can do to help you!"

"I guess you didn't read the fine print on your spell, but I'm not from around here. Instead of throwing words you know I don't understand at me, why don't you explain what those actually are and why should I care?"

"You're right, I apologize." Cadencia bows in apology in the same fashion that you did just a moment before. The young mage takes in a deep breath and sits down on a bench nearby. You stand there, not amused as you place your hand on your hip.

"Well?"

"Vernengard is this island. This island right here." she points to the ground.

"An island?"

"Yes, a floating island." that piques your interest. Your eyes widen, and soon fasten themselves on the girl before you.

"The Strayheaven, Starheaven, or Strahaven. It has a couple of different names, but they all refer to the same thing. It's a large, magical glyph that spans the cosmos. It keeps what's known as Oblivion away. Oblivion is the denial of creation, a being, no, an 'existence' capable of destroying all life as we know it.

"Wait, is that thing just for here or everywhere?"

"Oblivion can destroy, no.. the right word is 'erase' everything. Are you following?"

"Yeah... now that I got that, what did that summoning do to my body? Am I any different?"

Cadencia nods to confirm. "Yes. The way magic works in this world is that every living being, every flower, every blade of grass and even the planet itself is bound by the Starheaven. This gives us our magic abilities. The reason we summon heroes is that they're not 'controlled' by the Starheaven, as they are a part of it. You have powers beyond a simple person, a simple mage's imagination. Taking down an army would be but a meager task for you."

You try and cycle this all through your head in just one sitting...

Speed, strength, flight, lasers from the eyes, what?" the storm of questions sends the girl into a dizzying spiral. Cadencia nods, taking everything in before speaking again.

"The last hero summoned, if I can recall, had the power to tame beasts, even the most fearsome of creature. And how you use them? That's entirely up to you. I serve as your Master, though... which puts us into a bit of a hard place."

"What do you mean by that?"

"This contract is split 50/50. Meaning, if you die, I die. If I die, you die. The contract is a merging of the soul."

"Wait, I have another question."

"You seem to have a lot of those."

"Shut up, you summoned me, you're obliged to answer. Am I dead? Was I taken from my world? What?"

"I believe you were taken from your world." you grit your teeth in anger. Great, this just keeps getting better and better. "Ah, I forgot. Your weapon is through there." With nothing else, you walk forward and into the center of the room contaminted to the brim with magical energy. "Tch." you punch the wall in anger before moving onward. There, in the middle of the room, was a sword covered in vines, radiating with blue energy that seeps up from the cracks in the ground. "Great." you groan in discontent. You walk forward and grip the sword by the hilt. "Huh!" you heave upward on the hilt. "Come on you piece of shit."

The sword cracks. The crack grows larger, and larger before the sword breaks into nothing but fragments. Then, it bursts into nothing but dust.

"What?" you hear Cadencia's voice from the entrance of the room. "Wait a second. Why did it break? That was a legendary sword.. how?"

"I really don't know." you look at your hands, a bit relieved that the weapon just vanishes. "Guess I have to punch the crap out of everything?"

"How can this be?" Cadencia is still speechless, but you smile. Some sort of divine retribution for you, perhaps?

"A weapon of your choosing." a voice shouts in the recesses of your mind. "What shape will your heart take?" it repeats.

You just close your eyes and focus...

You imagine three shapes in your head. Gauntlets, that articulate at the wrist but continue up the elbow. A two-handed blade, and a weapon from your world. An assault rifle. You remember how it works, how it sounded. In a blast of blue light, your hands are covered by thick armored gauntlets. On your back is a strap with a gun. In the ground, there was that two-handed sword.

"What did you just..." Cadencia is throughly surprised.

"Tch, don't ask me." you grip the sword, pull it out of the ground and hoist it over your back. "Are we done here?" you tilt your head to the side, frowning.

"I believe so, but what were your other questions?"

"Well, this whole 'taking-me-from-my-world-to-fight-entropy' and drafting me without me knowing ANYTHING before hand is still a bit FUZZY to me. Can you answer me this question: 'Why is the universe such an asshole?'"

"I... don't know the answer to that myself." Cadencia honestly ponders the question. She couldn't catch the sarcasm, but that was her problem and not yours.

This is Pokemon Sky Blue edition. We are going to have at least one super monster on our side. The weapon should be dedicated to personal protection so that we can give our forces more maneuverability by not requiring anyone to stay behind and protect us.
>>
We could also let this spiral fully out of control and ask for a giant Mecha. Just sayin'.
>>
>>20116166
We kinda need to know what kind of people and monsters live in this world, Also what made them summon us all of a sudden?
>>
A fucking A-Bomb
>>
>>20116166

Okay, what is Oblivion, how has it been fought in the past, where do we find the giant monster things, are there any records left behind by previous guardians...Where do we start, here? Our world of origin has not exactly equipped us to fight a battle against death itself.
>>
Honestly, so far, I'm thinking fuck this faction
This chick seems to think she's our master?
Bull fucking shit

"Well, in my world we have a Story. In that story, Lord Entropy rules the Cosmos, and to even stand against him is foolish. Well. Why should i even attempt it? Can you guarantee i go back to my world once this is finished? Can you even guarantee me that i can finish it?"

"Excuse me if i am angry, but i am angry."

"What shape has the attacks from Oblivion taken in the past? Obviously, if there's some kind of anthropomorphic personification of entropy, it must use attacks of some kind.

Wait a tick! Maybe the laptop is inside the gauntlets! Like, we use the gauntlet to access the knowledge that would be in the laptop. So try to summon up a screen or something with the Gauntlets.

We should also mention that where we come from what she did was: kidnapping, enslavement, illegal forced conscription and a violation of US immigration procedures. Also, depending on our age it could also be a wide variety of war crimes.

It seems obvious to me that she referred to herself as the "Master" as a technical term. Let's not press the issue unless she brings it up again.

"Seriously, though. What exactly is Oblivion? How has it been fought in the past? Where do we find the giant monsters you speak of? Are there any records left behind by previous heroes? Where do we even start?" you scratch your head in frustration. Now that you actually think about this, it was getting more difficult.

Cadencia, as always, nods to each question. "Oblivion, with the way the Starheaven is set up, can only seep through the cracks, so to speak. It often manifests as a powerful monster or entity that the Chosen Guardians of each isle or world and they take care of it. The reasoning behind that is unknown, though." she seems unsure as she states that outloud. "And the giant monsters? Some are actually called Remnants."

"Why's that?"

"They're large creatures with history, so they're 'Remnants' of the past. There are quite a few of them, actually. Also, yes to that question about the records of the previous heroes. They're kept back in Vernengard, actually."

"Good to know... and say, why are you my Master? Why do you call yourself that? What stops me from taking over?"

"The way I summoned you is... if I die, you die, and vice versa."

"Who thought up that system!?"

"I really don't know. I've heard its to keep both parties in line, and both co-existing."

In line? Those words pissed you off even more. What stops you from killing her now and ending this? Even with this Guardian business, you could just lift your new sword, or shoot her or punch her head into the pavement.

>Dispose of your 'Master'

I'm cool with this in general, but let's not be stupid about it. Being the savior of the world from Oblivion is a really good lead-in to a military dictatorship anyway. First things first, let's look up those records.

And Jesus Christ, no, we're not going to hop on an action that's very likely to kill us.

"Okay. So if you die, I die. That's supposed to keep me in line. I have reality warping powers and control over kaiju super-monsters. I could just, you know, throw you in a prison. Chain you to a wall somewhere and assign some terrified peasant to watch over you, never have to worry about you again. Point I'm making here is that the universe is both an asshole and stupid, so it falls on you to give me a reason to risk my life for a war in a world I've never seen before."

Actually, no. Just of this island.

Look, the ranting about being ripped from a home world is just a front to put her in the frame of mind of gratitude for our help when we eventually give it (because we cannot rule a kingdom that has been erased from reality) rather than a sense of entitlement to our services. In the old world, we're a normal joe. In this world, we have reality warping powers. Why would we want to return to our world AFTER we've already dealt with the reality-eating problems in this one?

"We're not in this 'US' anymore, are we?"

"Well-"

"Exactly."

"Tch, screw that then. Tell me, why couldn't I just go and do what I want, mind my own business, you know? You better make this worth my while." you walk forward and lean against the ruin wall, arms crossed.

"What would you have me do?"

"Alright, a few conditions. Find a way, I don't care how, find a way to break this contract and send me home."

"W-what!?"

"HEY, I'm not done. You summoned me so you need me. Send me back after I've finished, you got it? I don't care who, or what you choose as your next Guardian, it just isn't going to be me. Get me back to the point where I was dragged here, safe and sound. You agree, right?"

Cadencia hesitates, then sighs. "Very well. I'll do everything in my power to find a way to send you back."

"Oh right, call me The Nameless Complainer."

"That name is... Nameless. No Name? Does that sound good?"

You don't answer her, just to strain her nerve to the last second. "How do we get out of here?"

OP, some of the people here are trying to have fun experimenting with super powers. Others want to respond to having been victimized by an atrocity which happens to go unspoken of all the damn time in fantasy fiction. These are both interesting and valid ways to play the game, but by doing both of them on top of each other, you make the character look like a bipolar lunatic. Run with the more popular version of the protagonist offered rather than trying to do both at once, or this quest is going to be unreadable.
>>
"Later." you let those words slip out. You crouch low to the ground and leap into the air. The speed of your descent is too fast for Cadencia's eye to follow.

"WAIT!" she snaps out of her spell, walks forward and extends her hand out but she's too late. She starts crying for her sake rather than yours. You hear her sobs, but they don't phase you. Your trajectory shot you in an arc, and you fall down in the middle of a shallow lake about 1/2 a mile away from Cadencia's current location. "So those distorted memories." you mumble to yourself. "That's part of the trick to, right? I can't remember my home so I stay here. What kind of fucked up ritual is that." tears start flowing down your face. No one you loved, no one you knew, dragged away and taken to a fantasy world. "DAMMIT ALL!" you stab the Zweihander into the ground. "DAMMIT!" you pull it out, and stab it into the ground again.

"WHY ME? WHY THE FUCK DID IT HAVE TO BE ME!?" your emotions run wild. The blade keeps dancing in the water. Up, down, up, down, water splashes about and onto the shore.

"So Vernegard's hero is another failure?" an unknown voice. Through your tear strained eyes, you look up and see the figure of a woman. "Sigh, why do they always get the short end of the stick?"

"It's because they're failures, Aisha. It's as simple as that." a man speaks up. He walks out from behind the tree, a smug smile on his face. "My, I have to say, my tracking skills are impecable." he strokes his ego.

"Hey, Failure, what's your name?"

Your emotions are so jumbled, you can't think of anything to say.

No it's not. The girl is our killswitch. She dies, we die. We need to make sure that she can't be killed, or commit suicide, in order to kill us.

If we're going to take over this island, like others have been wanting, we'll need to minimize our weakness.

We apparently hate this society and people with a passion; why should we feel remorse if a few heads get broken along the way?
>>
Also, yeah, the point here is that we're demanding that she justify her actions, not that we actually plan to commit genocide on a whim. I am pretty okay with her groveling for forgiveness. With your rage boiling over and tears in your eyes, you grab the assault rifle on your back and point it straight at the man. Well, rather, you angle it down close to his knees. "Oh my, what kind of-" you pull the trigger.

The bullets burst forward and pierce his leg. In the next second, his eyes widen. A terrible pain shoots through his body. He falls to the ground, yelling in pain. "AHHHhhhhh!"

"Fuck you, primitives." you place the gun on your back, looking at the other girl called Aisha. She had ... completely disappeared from sight. Her body was a blur, even with your heightened powers you didn't see her coming. Her kick was instantaneous...

We're from Earth, it makes perfect sense for us to adopt the mantle of Anonymous. And being an avatar of impulsive and violent retribution against fucked up establishments is exactly how I want to play this guy. I say we call ourselves Anonymous. Anon to our friends. We need to commission a Guy Fawkes mask at soonest convenience, and cover up our face as soon as this battle ends, so that as few people as possible know what we look like.

For now, though, catch foot with gauntlet, blast out her kneecaps too. Avoid killing people, though. We don't necessarily know if they're threats, just that they're stupid enough to mock a heavily armed living superweapon.

Time seems to slow down as the other Guardian closes in. Her speed was up to par with yours, of course, but with your heightened senses, you're able to decipher the movement, no matter how fast. You grip her leg with an open palm. Her eyes widen in surprise, but they shrink in the same instant. "HAAAH!" you swing her around. Once, twice, and a third final time. Your eyes lock onto the destination. A large, stone cliff near the edge of the shallow river. You toss her as fast as you can. Her body performs a corkscrew in mid-air and she recovers. She places one hand onto the surface of the water and skids along, actually smashing rear first into the rock.

You felt it, adrenaline. Your mind was clear now. You clench your fist, smiling. Your tears dry, your ambition rising. "I am the fury of a thousand innocents torn from reality. I am the retribution for shattered dreams and stolen futures." you grip the Zweihander and raise it toward Aisha. "I am the vengeance of the innocent and the punishment for their appressors. I am the nameless, the unknown, I am Anonymous. I do not forgive, I do not forget. Expect us!" you swing the sword twice, bringing to a stand still, pointing it once again at the girl before you.

Aisha just smiles at your long-winded introduction. "Oh, you talk big, back it UP, HERO!" Aisha, now moving faster than before, closes in. She pulls out her weapon, a small lance with a glowing purple tip. Your eyes immediately discern the magical affliction at the tip of the lance as a poison. Your eyes did it, but you didn't. Was this the power of the Starheaven?

You bend your legs down to gather momentum then you leap high into the air to avoid her incoming attack. She stabs at the ground, the blade breaking through the water and stone. "You know, you should probably check your friend! A bullet wound is highly prone to infection! I'd reccomend getting it healed!" you begin to sweat from the small exertion of energy. It felt different, really. Your body moves so easily, but Cadencia explained that before.

"You should be worrying about yourself." she spoke in a calm voice. The purple-tipped lance expands outward into a serpent. Wait, a serpent? The serpent separates into two, then five, then a dozen. It keeps multiplying. "I won't kill you, but this is going to hurt you. A lot. SNAP!" she stabs the lance forward.

You finally land on the ground. Water splashes up from the impact, dousing your black pants and white shirt.

The heads of the purple lance rush forward and through the air, straight at you.

>What to do?
>>
>>20117345

Yes. This. We need to protect our killswitch. She's pretty compliant right now. She's fully aware of the enormity of what it is she asking of us, and on top of that she's apparently feeling at least some guilt (and justly so) for what she's just done to us. I have achieved everything I set out to do in interacting with her, except for the part where we ditched out on her and had a psychotic breakdown.

So let's incapacitate and not kill this girl, and then get back to our phylactery.

You think on your feet. You stab the large sword into the ground to provide cover. You take the assault rifle off your back and shoot. You leave it all to your new instincts. You pepper the bullets through the air, aiming at each barbed head of the lance. One head down, two, three, they just keep falling. You keep it up. The lance heads are kept at bay, Aisha retracts it and clicks her tongue in frustration. "You really are pretty good, Hero. I said I wouldn't kill you, because, well, that'd just make me look bad... and I'm not allowed to." she mutters that last part under her breath. You breathe in and out, and she isn't even tired.

The Zweihander that's still stabbed in the ground vanishes in a blue light. It appears, sheathed on your back in the next second. Exhaustion starts to take over. Your legs feel weak, your head hurts. Yet you can't give up.

"Hey, where's *****?" voices in the back of your mind.

"I don't know. He said he'd be back soon. I'm sure he's fine." another resounds.

Somewhere, someone was asking for you. They were worried about you, they would grieve if you were gone. She, Cadencia, separated you from your home and she sure as hell was going to send you back. For that to happen, you had to live.

>What to do?
>>
>>20117488

We tried to defuse the fight, she didn't respond. I do not see why we should believe her when she says the weapon is non-lethal (beyond the OOC implications that OP is probably not willing to end the thread this early). Furthermore, I think it is important to establish very early on that we are not to be fucked with or treated lightly. If we give you an opportunity to leave a fight, you take it.
>>
For the last time, not every situation calls for a stand-up fight. In this case, we really need to prioritize escape, since if we're immobilized fighting a pointless battle, our killswitch is left alone and unguarded.

We've hurt them, the smart thing to do is withdraw before they can hurt us.

"Oh, you still think you can win? Alrighty! I'll end this with one blow! SNAP, DEVOUR!" the lance head transforms into a large, serpentine head. It roars and flies forward, straight at you. The water in the lake ripples outward, and forms a large twister that reaches into the sky.

"HERE I COME!" you charge forward, the blade tearing at the air and ground with its powerful light.

The ground shakes in fear.

"STOP, YOU IDIOT! AISHA!" Aisha's Master pleads out. She can't hear him, however, as the power in the lance surges out. It continues its charge.

The light rips into the air before vanishing. Smoke rises from the crater created from the two attacks colliding. The water from the shallow lake rains down upon the scarred ground. "Your not suited for heavy attacks, are you?" you still stand, using your Zweihander as a support. "Your fast but you can't take the pain..."

"Shut up." Aisha still stands, her body charred black from the attacks colliding. Her knees wobble and she falls on over, using her hands to support herself. "I had you all wrong. We can't apologize to Candencia. Yes, what we just did was stupid, but right now we have her in a place where she's guilty and apologetic towards us. "Listen, I'm... sorry. I'm very sorry."

"Your island's got a Hell of a welcomiing committee." you ignore her and stare at the ground.

"Why do most Guardians even put up with this shit?"
>>
>>20118084
What? Huh what are you talking about? You mean WHY we were summoned she already told us why. So lost
>>
Guys. I have thought of a line of bullshit to get us through this without sacrificing our currently non-violent hold on our summoner. If she brings up what happened, claim they saw us vulnerable and immediately threatened us. Don't say anything else about it until someone else brings it up, who knows that what they did was insulting, but not actually threatening. At which point we claim that where we come from, being a "failure" means you get sent off into the wilderness to die, or else you get killed on the spot for refusing, because the resources of our world are scarce enough that we just can't tolerate any cruft. Tell them that if they're going to be summoning guardians regularly, they really should have figured out how to deal with basic cultural differences by now.

But first confirm that all guardians do not originate from Earth. We can pretend to be from a made-up world so long as guardians are in fact pulled from multiple worlds.
>>
We need to ease up on Candencia now. She feels guilt. Now we offer her redemption.
>>
>>20118058
"Summoning a Hero to help save your world? Must be a great honor among your people. So why did YOU get to do it? What makes you so special? And out of all the people in all the Worlds, why me?"
>>
>>20118086

Voting against this. We can't imply that we're at fault for what just happened. Yes, it's assholish, but it threatens our hold on Candencia. She is very important. We need her to be cooperative without use of violence.
>>
>>20118135
True enough so if we ask questions at all I'm guessing there should be no anger in our voice
>>
>>20118058
"Aw hell, i blew a lot of Steam in that battle. Guardians are really tough as hell. That said, stop calling me No Name, it sounds silly. You may call me Anon."

I dislike this

>>
>>20118159
We shall continue to be the Man with No Name.
>>
>>20118140

Jesus, people. This society appears to expect us to bend over and take whatever our summoner plans to dish out. We need to focus our efforts on establishing as firmly as possible that this WILL NOT HAPPEN. That means we show zero vulnerability, because there is a very real possibility that Candencia will exploit it if we do. It's very possibly what her culture expects of her.
>>
>>20118115
This is a good idea.
>>
>>20118175
If this society is that expectant of a compliant Guardian, then the fact that we won't comply is a threat to them, and they'd kill Candencia to kill us and get rid of another failure.
>>
>>20118175
We've barely even met anyone and you're already spouting anti-establishment bullshit? We don't even know how this whole summoning thing really works yet.

Fuck off for a little bit while cooler heads figure out the way the world works. THEN we can decide how we're going to interact with it.
>>
Well, we kinda already told the other Master to call us Anon. I think this will lead to lots of confusion later, but if you think its silly then dont tell her.
>>
>>20118175
Seconding. Tell her we will give her another chance to convince us to help her, but she better make a good pitch.

"Now that little fit of Dimensional Crossover Psychosis is out of the way." using the term you just made up, you straighten your figure, puff your chest out, and get ready to do what you do best. Frodo. "Why are most of the Guardians you kidnap failures? Valenfort or whatever referred to Vernengard as a failure. What's up with that?" you narrow your eyes.

"You keep saying kidnap." Cadencia looks to the ground. "We've only summoned three 'new' Guardians before. You being the third. The first one was long ago, and from then on the Guardian and the summoner produced a child. That child carried on its destiny, formed a contract with another summoner and made another heir. It's a lineage, you see."

Something clicked in your head. "Wait a second, what about the second?"

"That was the hero before last. He produced a son and that son was killed. Now you're the third, new hero."

You were being thrown for a loop. "S-so, okay, why me? What are the credentials to be summoned? Also, why were you the one to summon me?"

"Because I'm the most qualified mage and summoner. That's usually how it works. As for your question, about you being summoned? I really don't know."

"I have a question... does the summoning tamper with the memories? I mean, my memories of my own world?"

"It shouldn't, no. It's a very very powerful contract and transportation spell. It has nothing to do with memory tampering."

You reorganize your thoughts with all this new information...

>What to do?
>>
>>20118196
Let 'em try
We'll kill em all
If they wanna kill Cadencia, I imagine there's a chance she'd willingly join us to save herself
>>
>>20118175

Actually that is a very meta assumption based on similar genres. We actually have no idea how it works, so when you get down to it it's really just us being an asshole.
>>
>>20118154
>>20118175
Fuck you. We started down this path because of your suggestions. Regardless of how you originally meant them, this is the end result of following what you posted.

We don't know how the summoning works, we don't know if we were a fluke, we don't even know if the Master-Guardian relationship is a job with actual compensation.
You've neglected to even ask what this society is like, assuming and extrapolating from a very limited amount of information.

"Alright, wait, wait. Just to be sure. The summoning of a 'new' Guardian just summons a person from a random planet in the universe, or from a parallel reality. Is this right? Or would this Guardian entity normally be created by gestalt, and I'm just a fluke?"
>>
>>20118218
"If the spell isn't supposed to tamper with memories, why are mine so jumbled? Did any of the previous 'new' Guardians mention this?"

So most of the small fry fled before we managed to bring down the hammer. First thing we should do is check to see how the news is reporting our "brilliant victory". Then we go check out the astroids, as that shouldn't weaken the defenses of the station, since we will never leave the shell. Plus the might be providing intell on our dispositions from there. Ifwe can, grab some of the other forces here to give us backup.

"What the hell does that mean... am I supposed to produce a lineage with you? I am CALLING bullshit on this goddammit! I have my personal freedom and my rights." you lean forward, elbows on your knees, and you scoff. Getting back on track, you reorder your thoughts. "This island has summoned three guardians, or there have been three guardians summoned total?"
"You're right, three guardians summoned total."
"Alright, alright, so you only summon new guardians when their heirs of the last guardian die out, or the lineage is exterminated?"
"That's right."
"Alright, then who the hell did I just fight?"
"Probably the Guardian from the neighboring isle of Lancastle."
"Oh, alright." this made sense, at least up to now. "Alright, wait, wait, just to be sure. The summoning of a 'new' Guardian just summons a person from a random planet in the universe, or from a parallel reality. Is this right? Or would this Guardian entity normally be created by gestalt, and I'm just a fluke?"
"The guardians usually have human form, and I can say for sure the last Guardian summoned before you was from your world. A little test. You said US, right? That means United States, correct?"
"W-what... how did you know?"
"The last Guardian participated in something called "World War I"."
"Shit. It is my world then." you sigh in dejection. "Wait a second..."
"You say that a lot.
"Quiet. If the spell isn't supposed to tamper with memories, why are mine so jumbled? Did any of the previous 'new' Guardians mention this?"
"I'd have to chalk that up as a fluke, since you used that term yourself."

>What to do?
>>
It's exactly because we know so little that a guarded approach is advisable. We can let the guard down later if circumstances permit, but we can't easily put it back down once it's dropped. We need to know how this works. Besides, someone isn't allowing Aisha to kill people. "Not allowed" is a weird way to put that, and it implies a specific authority figure telling her not to, rather than it being "against the law" or "not how we do things here" or whatever. It doesn't *necessarily* mean her master specifically ordered her not to...But they're called "Masters." And that is also very significant.

This girl called herself our Master. And that is normal in her culture. We have every reason to be wary of that. She is NOT our friend until we confirm that her culture has not raised us to fuck her over.

Also, so the fuck what if they only rarely kidnap people. It still happens.
>>
>>20118397
"Well, okay, could be worse. At least you're not hideously deformed. Anyway, so if there were only three guardians summoned in all of time, and you only summon guardians when all of the last guardian's heirs die, than how am I not the only guardian in this universe? Also, do you have computers, internet, internal combustion engines, gunpowder, and the like?"

"One thing we need to get out of the way right now. You're not my master. You never will be. Get it out of your head, and while you're at it, get it out of your head that anyone should ever be someone else's Master just because who they were born to or who summoned who or what the Hell ever. That's fucked up and wrong. You've shown you're not devoid of empathy, so maybe we can still work together, but you don't have authority over me. Pragmatically speaking, you're mostly just a walking chink in my armor as far as I can tell."

>>20118474
Depends. Were we taken out right at the point of imminent death?
Considering the previous 'new' Guardian was a soldier in WW1, he might have been pulled out right as an artillery shell was about to land in his trench.
At that point, is it kidnapping or rescue.
>>
>>20118525

Read what I've been saying, dipshit. I'm manipulating her into being willing to cooperate with us, not just trying to fuck her over. That's exactly why I was so irritated when the OP turned an ice-cold condemnation into a psychotic break.

"Well, okay, could be worse. At least you're not hideously deformed."
"Is that you're way of complimenting me? I'm not flattered." Cadencia's eyes turn to slits. You, again, ignore her and continue on.
"Anyway, so if there were only three guardians summoned in all of time, and you only summon Guardians when all of the last Guardian's heirs die, than how am I not the only guardian in this universe?"
"No, no, I misheard you last time. THIS island has summoned three guardians in total. The rest are from the lineage."
"Then have other islands had to summon more than one Guardian before? Like, do they just keep the lineage they already have going and going?" you were honestly curious. That other girl didn't look like she was from back home.
"Yes. Vernegard hasn't had the best of luck. That's we're referred to as a failure."
"Because they keep dying, right. Well, I won't be joining them." you stand up from the log, stretching your arms into the air. "I told you to take me home and you're going to."
"I'll do my best."
"Oh hey, what was the Last Guardian's name? Also, what did they talk about?"
"I really don't have that information... it's kind of back home in the city."
"City. Vernegard, right?" Cadencia nods. "Tch, alright, we might as well get moving. We won't get anything done sitting around like this."

=End of Chapter 1=

Will continue with Chapter 2 this Thursday in the afternoon.
>>
I say we just chill out and take a day to think, got damn, get to know the world and gather our thoughts.
>>
>>20118668

I have considered that. I want confirmation before we act on it, however. It's awesome this girl is willing to work with us. It means we can probably turn off the callous emotional manipulation sooner rather than later even if masters are typically expected to govern their guardians. But we need to play this close to the chest. We can apologize for this later if it turns out to be unnecessary.
>>
>>20118723
>apologize for this later if it turns out to be unnecessary
Oh yes. I'm sure that a simple apology will be enough to make up for emotional manipulation, being a callous asshole, damaging government property, and being a raging asshole.

You're just making our progress more difficult, not making it better.
>>
>>20118723
Or alternatively we could try not being an emotionally manipulative callous asshole. I mean what do we honestly lose by being courteous, if she has bullshit magical control over us, then we'll find out sooner or later then we can start plotting against her, if not, then all we're doing is being a dick for no real reason.
>>
>>20118766

If she's not willing to accept "sorry, I was freaked out as Hell and scared for my autonomy," something which is totally reasonable and true, then she's a prick anyway.

Listen. This girl fucking kidnapped us. She dragged us out of our world and into hers without even stopping to consider what the repercussions might be. One of the first things she did was call herself our master, and seriously? We're expected to produce a lineage with her, so yeah, this is starting to smell like sadomasochistic fetish-driven storytelling again.
>>
>>20118793

Yes. We do lose by being courteous. We lose by giving up an emotional advantage over someone who introduced themselves to us by abducting us and refers to herself as our master. If her culture does expect guardians to take orders from masters, then getting rid of that impression in her NOW means we won't have to use violence later. That is worth bruising a few feelings.

This isn't just some random girl. There are dozens of alarm bells indicating that she is not. Our. Friend. She was reasonably polite immediately after kidnapping us. The first does not balance out the second. Lose the Stockholm Syndrome.

>not being a raging asshole
>accused of stockholm syndrome

>>
>>20118819
>>20118844
Oh really, you'd forgive someone who punched you, emotionally manipulated you, flat out said will kill everyone you hold dear, and has been acting like a raging douchenozzle, with just a simple "I'm sorry, I thought you were going to enslave me?"
The normal reaction is to say "Fuck you."

>without even stopping to consider what the repercussions might be
You have nothing to back that up. Nothing at all. That's just your supposition.

She called herself our Master, yes, but implied that it's merely a contractual term, and that we're each other's killswitches now.

We can be polite without giving up an emotional advantage. Just because we aren't a raging asshole to her doesn't mean that we don't hold her responsible for our current predicament.
Your approach won't just bruise feelings, it sabotages any kind of working relationship.

If you don't like, then get the fuck out. Your suggestions have done nothing but paint us as an asshole and make things worse.
>>
TwirledMustache you are trying to make our character a conspiracy theorist instead of a teenager. Yeah our situation is bad but jumping to conclusion and trying to have the PC act like a colossal prick does NOT do anything expect piss off potential allies.

Heck your first response was to punch her. Also what kind of teenager is that skilled at manipulation?
>>
Now for something actually productive.
1. We need to ask for details concerning the Master-Guardian relationship.
2. Find out the circumstances of the previous two 'new' Guardians.
We should find out if the previous Guardians died because this island gets stronger than normal beasts from Oblivion, or if it's just that they sucked.
>>
Plus like most other people have been saying, it's not like we woke up in a dark room bound in chains with our captor making demands of us.

What you have been suggesting gains us nothing. The threats, physical harm, and general assholishness does not get swept under the rug by "I'm sorry, I made assumptions and made an ass out of myself"

There is a reason the sayings, "Look before you leap", and "Think before you speak" exist.
>>
>>20119012

Pretty much this, at this point our mc seem highly unstable and sociopathic, the girl was perfectly willing to talk things out anyway, trying to show dominance when the concept of Master-Guardian relation isn't even set in stone is stupid.

so yeah, summoning fuck up gave our poor teenager induced insanity, yeah?
>>
Okay. Listen. Read this quote from >>20116539

>"No, hold up. Where I'm from, this is called kidnapping, enslavement, illegal force conscription and a violation of US immigration procedures! Where are my rights?" you narrow your eyes at Cadencia. The blonde just responds with a flick of the wrist.

>"We're not in this 'US' anymore, are we?"

>"Well-"

>"Exactly."

You see that? We told her very clearly, point-blank, that we felt our rights had been violated. And her response was to brush us off. "Teehee, your rights don't apply here!" So the FUCK YOU BITCH response was entirely deserved. She was talking down to us. She was not treating us as an equal, even when we very explicitly said that our RIGHTS were being violated. OP then turned my response into an emotional breakdown, and instead of letting her say her piece and explain herself, some anon had us Hulk-jump away instead. That's when things went tits up.
>>
Also note that I have NEVER recommended physically harming our summoner, or even anyone else. I've pointed out to her that we could do it, but the only time I actually advised physical violence is when I was fed up with the OP for turning our character into an unstable nutcase.
>>
>>20119365

Because she's right.

You don't have any fucking right as a US citizen in another world, get with the program, yo udon't expect to have your right of free speech and non harm in a hurricane do you?

We've got to deal with the cards we were dealt with
>>
>>20119416
Could that count as starting war with US?
>>
>>20119416

The cards we were dealt is that she was asking us for a favor and also treating us like shit.
>>
>>20119443

She wasn't treating us like shit, she got a bit uppity when we started to want to be fed and get what we wanted.

You, hell everyone here, jumped to conclusion and overreacted big time, sometime you've got to do shit you don't want to because that's what happen, that's your duty.

>>20119438

Murrica aint strong here
>>
>>20119443
She was treating us like shit because we were treating her like shit.
She stayed patient and answered our questions even as our tone got more and more hostile.

And she's right about the rights thing. We're not in any place where the US has jurisdiction, so our rights don't matter. What matters, which what she was pointing out, is what our value is to the society we are in now.

If you think this is just a 'sadomasochistic fetish-driven storytelling' then get the fuck out and stay out.
We can do much better without you.
>>
>>20119481
But we are strong and we play as murrikan
>>
Dunno if you guys have noticed, but this has gone pretty well for us so far. Our summoner has done her best to apologize to us, the guys we picked a fight with don't seem to consider there to be any hard feelings. Either OP isn't going to let us fail or doesn't consider anything we've done to be a mistake. Hell, the way he ended that fight implies he *wanted* us to pick a fight with the girl.
>>
Also, the questions we were asking were almost all directly relevant to the job she wanted us to do. She had absolutely no right to get upset over our asking them.
>>
>>20119562

And we didn't exactly had any right to punch her and throw a tantrum.

Both parties are at fault at this point.
>>
>>20119615

Tantrum was because the OP decided to add in physical violence and ALL CAPS. And because some other Anon decided that hulk-jumping away from someone who was trying to have a conversation with us would be just soooo badass. Both of those were stupid, but neither of them were my fault.
>>
>>20119514
Of course our summoner will try to get a better working relationship with us; her life depends on it.
The guys that we picked a fight with were most likely there to test us, because of this island's known failure with acquiring strong Guardians that don't fuck up. They most likely wanted to know if this island's Guardian would be sufficient, or if neighboring allied islands would have to send their own resources to help out.
Since, to them, this was a training exercise and they have magical healing, they wouldn't expect to hold a grudge.

>>20119562
Yes, all of the questions till then were relevant to the job at hand, and asked in a hostile manner for each one. And the one question that she brushed aside was also the one question that did not have anything to do with how to fight Oblivion.
>>
>>20119678

I'm not accusing you, everyone fucked up because that's what happen in a quest, when the mc fault, its everyone fault.

Or the op jumped the guns, either way, we've got to deal with the mc we have here, a very emotional teenager/young adult.
>>
Exactly, and Stache you WERE the one to suggest punching her. Before the game had even really started.

It was even before the word Master was even MENTIONED. So don't used the OP's ability to roll with the punched to justify your bullshit.
>>
>>20119715

Yeah, because it was a totally OOC test of the MC's capabilities to roll with the punches. The idea IC was that our dude pops into reality freaked out and confused and reacts poorly to a fight-or-flight reflex. Then OP stacked it on top of the introductory conversation and I had to do some damage control.
>>
>>20119685

Are you seriously saying that she is justified in dismissing our concerns when we've just been pulled out of our normal lives, are at least mildly scared and confused, and are asking for a perfectly reasonable justification of why we should be expected to risk our lives helping her? Because that's balls-out retarded. We are not obligated to risk our lives for these people.
>>
>>20119396
So I guess these were by someone else named TwirledMustache
>>20115324
>>20116698
>>
>>20119809

No but we ca nat least hear them out.

Also mc got a big kick out of that fight, I think he might like getting in a scrap.
>>
>>20119835

Okay, yeah, barring the one thing done for totally OOC purposes and which I immediately recommended apologizing for.
>>
>>20119809
She is justified in saying what she did because obviously we weren't getting it through our head that we were no longer in our world of origin.
And that was not asking for a justification, that was us saying that we don't have to do what she says because we're a US citizen.

Your recommendations and posts have brought us nothing but trouble.
>>
>>20119859

My plan was always to hear her out. I wanted to establish that she couldn't just dismiss our concerns, but I didn't want to establish that pissing us off means we'll get violent and run away. What I'm trying to establish here is that when people accuse me of intentionally scuttling someone else's quest, they are flat-out wrong. I did what I did because it made sense to me, or once out of frustration (and I spent the rest of the session trying to worm our way out of that one) and it happened to combo VERY poorly with a few other actions.
>>
>>20119809

No, she wasn't dismissing them, she was stating a simple fact. Even when you go to another country you are expected to play by their rules, doesn't matter where your from. Simple really. Also she was probably a little irratatted because even when people are scared and confused they don't act like a total douche.

Plus getting punched in the face tends to make people a little cranky.
>>
>>20119910
Oh, so you're just unintentionally scuttling this quest, then. That makes it all the better.
>>
>>20119905

Which is half my response was that it didn't fucking matter where we were, we were taught that we had certain rights and if she was going to spit on those rights, we sure as Hell weren't going to be doing her any favors. Like the huge, life-threatening favor she was asking of us. It doesn't matter what her culture thinks we're supposed to do, because we can murder her culture. What matters is what we think and feel, so she can't dismiss that the way she did.
>>
>>20119945
So it's fine to dismiss her entire society, because we can destroy it, and the only thing that matters is our own morals and our own self-preservation. She has to respect us, but we don't have to respect her in return.
>>
Really you say that you are manipulating the girl so that we don't have to use ugly violence, and yet your best argument for why we don't have to listen to anything she says is because we have power now that we can use for ugly violence on her people.

Way to rationalize.
>>
>>20120003

You can make one of two arguments, here.

You can argue that my approach was morally wrong because it's assholish, in which case you're wrong because all I was doing was establishing that she can't disregard our rights just because we don't happen to be on US soil anymore.

You can also argue that my approach was pragmatically wrong, in which case you're wrong because the minute she summoned us, we had the monopoly on force. We are stronger than neighboring Guardians and far stronger than her and her people. They very explicitly need our help to protect them. This makes us the de facto government and means we have no reason to cede the rights granted to us by our previous government.

Yes, you can pretend you're winning with a strawman by saying that my response to one of your arguments was actually a response to another, but that would make you an idiot.

At least he perfectly encapsulates the 'MURRIKA FUCK YEAH!' ideal.

Let's start with pragmatic, because that's faster. It was pragmatically wrong because even if we defeated a single Guardian that was holding back, there are other islands, and we can't hold off a concentrated strike team of Guardians. We only showed that we may be stronger than ONE other Guardian; we have no idea how many other Guardians there are, or how they stack up compared to us.
So no, we don't have a monopoly on force, and the government could still call on a neighbor for aid, have us killed, and summon another Guardian.

Your approach was morally wrong because you threatened death, genocide, and personal injury because she pointed out that our rights as a US citizen don't apply (which is true). She didn't say we had NO rights, and didn't even get to say what right s we do have.
You threatened her for pointing out the truth.
