>>ITT We pretend to exist in an alternate earth making up a setting that is real earth.

Here are the basic outlines for the setting I'm putting together for a modern game. It's far from complete, but it's a work in progress.
>Germany lost the world war, resulting in a second world war that Germany also lost.
>America still superpower because of cold war with Russia.
>No Indian Empire.
>No Arctic colonies.
>Middle East now basically third world country ruled by religious extremism.
>Society rolled back about 50 years, technology forward about 10.
>>
>OP isn't a faggot

Oh my god I kill myself sometimes
>>
So it's basically the 60's with 2020 technology?

>>
>Frozen icy poles, with a hot equator
For the hell of it, let's change climate too.
>>
Drugs are illegal.
>>
>>20196913
If you're getting rid of the Indian Empire, there's kind of a power vacuum in Asia. Maybe make a unified China under the Nationalists? Or even the Maoists, if that isn't too WAT for you.
>>
>>20197011
Nah, let's make them nationalist pseudo-communists that never even feign interest an international revolution and bend over backwards for the sake of growth in power and wealth.
>>
>America is about to land a laser-equiped robot on mars from a rocket-crane platform.
>>
>>20197054
Let's make casual sweeping statements about politics we know very little about.
>>
>>20197011
China would never unify. That's like saying the U.S.S.R. will fall.
I say instead that we divide the continent of North America into a few more countries. Give them exotic names like Kanadia and Mekiko.
>>
I vote the British empire conquered the whole globe/ the moon/ mars

Hey, we're just making an exciting setting that's different from our real lives, but still kinda close. There's only so much Lizards and Lairs I can take.
And you're right, those names will need some changing. How about Canada and Mexico?

>>
Magic isn't real in this world, so instead this setting is Electropunk. Massive electrical reactors powering entire cities, electricity in people's homes, local police deal with manticores and criminals using handheld stun wands, things like that.

>inb4 lab coats and goggles
>>
>>20197113
Don't be daft, the color of the cat is the most important thing.
>>
Here's an idea.

>Whole new continent, used by the British Empire to send whole fucking country's worth of criminals to.
>Desolate desert in the middle but the world's best beaches.
>>
>>20197149

Watch out, we don't need to start another AC/DC war. Just because some magitek student took a class on the elements he'll think he knows everything about this.
>>
How about we make Australia a desolate wasteland with only like 2 nice cities on it and NOT make it the seat of power it is today.
>>
>>20197149
>Electropunk
>no lab coat/goggles
wat
>>
>>20197211
>>20197200

Let's just combine these for ultimate WACKINESS
>>
>>20197149
Hang on, if magic isn't real, why would they ahve to deal with manticores?

>>20197200
A whole new continent? Wouldn't that massively screw with the world's water levels? That's almost as absurd as saying Atlantis had sunk, or something.

>>20197210
What if Tesla's magical theories & discoveries, or whatever the equivalent would be in this new world, had been suppressed by some asshole?
>>
Alright, so what do we do about the great nation of Atlantis? What if the continent just sunk in antiquity due to earthquakes or were just straight up fictitious in this alternate world? That would remove all of their magi-technological accomplishments to the world of course.
>>
>>20197076
>>20197076

>Atlantis
>ficticious

well it's a fantasy setting
>>
Remember that card game that one guy made for breaks during Lizards and Lair? Let's make that the most popular TCG in the world. He'd get a kick out of it.
>>
>>20197256
Manticores ain't magic dumbfuck.
Point to one magical thing about mants.
>>
>>20197200
But you can't use the beaches most of the year because of near-invisible incredibly poisonous jellyfish.
>>
>>20197076

So since this setting is already a bizarre clusterfuck of wacky, let's go whole hog and add Xtreme kool letterz to everything. Like instead of Mekiko call it Mexiko. Have a country called Kazakhland or something.

Also, this:

>>20197270

Actually combos surprisingly well with this:

>Middle East now basically third world country ruled by religious extremism.
>>
Oooh, and what if men had penises and women had vaginas!
>>
>>20197378
So it's basically the Republic of Scotland?
>>
>>20197417
Get your fetish-faggotry out of here.
>>
>>20197373
Yeah but manticores are native to Atlantis, at least back when the plates were shifting.
>>
Let's get rid of catpeople too, we can remove the human part and just have cat animals people keep as pets. They can be just as selfish and useless but smaller and more portable. They can be an alternative to dogs.
>>
>>20197378
You mean like the ones the Yucatan Confederacy employed in the Boer War, but just kind of floating around wild?
>>
>>20197432

But how would they take care of wounded / sick people without healing / divine powers?
>>
>>20197421
Surlier, worse climate, more sheep, more genocide of the natives, fewer Bengali and Maratha immigrants.
>>
>>20197450

YES. And in this world, every artificially produced bioweapon is actually native to Australia, no matter how stupidly implausible it is that such absurdly lethal creatures would evolve naturally. This is why Australia never rose to power in this world.
>>
>>20197442
But then what would replace their shitty little nation? Like it or not, they've had an effect on history.
>>
>>20197479

Herbs and natural healing? Makes it seem kind of grimdark. Break your arm in some random accident and it's out of commission for like a month.
>>
>>20197489
That would make like literally every animal there venomous.
>>
>>20197479
Uh, possibly devolped some sort of science that allowed the body to heal, one way they do it is by releasing small amount of a virus, not enough to cause a lot of harm but enough for the body to adapt?
Also this science is called medicine? Too much?
>>
>>20197479
As someone said earlier, they use science for all that. We just make up some shit like "atomos" instead or the planar web, to explain existence without magic.
>>
>>20197501
>>20197501
What if it's like, a bunch of dudes all called Frank. An empire of Franks.
>>
Alright hold up. Without magic or magi-techology, they're going to have a hell of a problem with climate issues on this world. Look up something called hurricanes or tornadoes in the historical archive. Maybe even a global warming or cooling effect from atmospheric chemical buildups.
>>
What if this world has a new type of resource that's a super energy dense liquid? What if this new liquid was able to give them the ability to power huge iron machines that could move at lightning fast speeds. With this, they may even be able to build iron birds that can fly at the speed of sound (a stretch I know, but this if a fantasy setting after all)! This could also be adapted to civilian use, and people would use these machines to travel vast distances almost trivially.

However, there is a twist to this. What if the resource was being rapidly exploited, and that there is no way to make more. I image there would be wars being fought using new technologies in order to secure this resource. We could also have technologically undeveloped peoples who happen to be sitting on massive amounts of this resource, and have them in conflict with the larger powers.
>>
What if everyone in the world carried a small electronic device that allows them to communicate to everyone who also owns a similar device? Also, this device is constantly used for recreation and provides people with music, video games and movies 24/7.

I know it's a little stretch but if this is going to be electropunk, let's make it all out electropunk.
>>
>>20197524
Dammit Frank, why would anyone name an empire after you?
>>
>>20197525

What if everyone had a small basement under their homes to run away from hurricanes? At least those living in places where such things are frequent.
>>
>>20197512
Well, some of them are just lethal in other ways. Like have one that looks just like a jimmy bear, only if you try to hug it it wakes up and starts mauling you.

If you really want to keep the poison level constant, we can make most of the plants poisonous. And add more spiders.
>>
>>20197533

Go ahead, but I'm not going to write the fluff for that. You're going to have to invent so many new jargon terms and magibabble it will make your head explode. I still don't see how this different from the crystanet.
>>
>>20197479
The military has procedures for emergency medical when there's no medics around. Plus there's been a lot deal of research lately into tech-medicine, where they cut people open in order to do stuff with their innards. There's a lot of questions about ethics, but if there weren't any magic, it makes sense that they'd use it.
>>
>>20197533

"Free sending spells" actually seems kind of tame for electropunk. These things should be constantly networked together so that someone can post something to a hub machine from one of them, and then everyone in the entire world can see it.

Although you'd have to have some gatekeepers to that system, or else the networks would just fill up with gazillions of pages of random stuff posted by 12-year olds. And if the network is global, that means we'd need some kind of global government. Not really any contenders for that with Australia out of the picture, though.
>>
>>20197525
Maybe they just deal with this stuff, oh god I got a great idea. How about in the middle of America with have this thing called tornado alley.
Basically it's this strip of land that stretches right up past America's border that has a huge amount of tornados pass right through that area.
Now here's the kicker, people live in this alley. And even if there homes are destroyed and livelihood go they rebuild their homes. And on the coasts people just deal with hurricanes constantly every year, with same amount of destruction.
>>
>>20197551
Spiders? So we're saying that the hundred year attempt to wipe them out failed/didn't happen in this world?
>>
>>20197529

Make this substance the liquified bones of dinosaurs (which are long exist in this world).

Fuck yeah, this is what I call awesome.
>>
>>20197583
Yeah, but who in their right mind would live in these places?
>>
>>20197586

Apparently war didn't drop off after the Great War, since we had at least one other one (on the same scale, even!) after that. So maybe they were just too busy killing each other to kill spiders.
>>
>>20197586
Yeah the attempt failed and now the spiders outnumber the Human population.
Same with all insects.
Oh and lets put all the most poisonous stuff on that penal continent.
>>
>>20197606

Well, no gods means no divine blessings on crop yields. Which means places like the middle of North America where crops just grow awesomely even without divine intervention are suddenly really, really important.

We are going with no gods, right? World of charlatans?

>>
>>20197606
Oh I got a great idea for that so people live there, make this alley rich in agriculture. Basically making it the breadbasket for America. Also most the people that live there are religious fundamentalists.
>>
>>20197606

People used to send criminals to this place hoping they would get killed by either spiders or each other. But the criminals survived and built a new civilization. They have become the masters of spiders, they ride giant spiders and shit

>>20197529
What if this (nonmagical?) resource were ESPECIALLY plentiful in the Middle East? Certainly other countries would be more interested in the area... what interventions would they pursue and how would the countries there react? It seems like it could make for a great politically tense environment.

To add to the tension, what if, because of the second of the great wars and the lack of access to magic, technology has become incredible in the weaponized, beyond even what we can achieve with magic. I'm talking huge mini-fortresses on wheels that shoot giant explosive bullets, huge bullets with NO chance to miss and just chase down based on some kind of scientific quality (heat?), and fucking BOMBS that can level entire cities - the mere presence of which threatens civilization as a whole.

How would Britain be in India? Without the connection to asia through Scandinavia there is no way they could reach India.
>>
>>20198298

In this world Hitler was an evil emperor who conquered all of the Land of Yourop with his massive armies and battle robots but then defeated.

And Ghandi was an Indian king who ruled with peace and love and stuff like that. I don't like him, he's unrealistic. Obviously anyone with that power would get corrupted.
>>
>>20198340
Wait, when did the British, the minority ethnic group from Scandinavia get there? I'm confused... I think we need to hammer down which of these crazy-ass ideas are ''canon''.

Some more crazy ideas, what if the Hugenot Church got wiped out in it's infancy, what if the Cult of Luther wasn't just a small sect, what if his 59 Thesis were more... like, 95 Thesis, and they started some huge movement that split the Roman Orthodox Church?
>>
>>20198231

Didn't you read the thread where we decided America then revolts nd forms it's own country and becomes super powerful and is secretly ruled by a small group called Illuminati?

Can we keep the part where he builds huge bombs that can destroy cities?
>>
>>20198271
It's going to be grimdark, man. They had a "Dark Age," they don't use magic, and instead electropunk. There's no way they can avoid huge casualties because they wouldn't be able to use Mage Duels to solve international disputes.
>>
>>20198436
What if
What if
He was in a war
And saw some shit
>>
>>20198422
Yeah, but what could make them revolt? It's not going to be over some tiny little thing like a tarrif on tea or something. What would be their battlecry, "representation or no taxation"? Please.
>>
>>20198441
I agree, I like the blowing up of cities.
Let's be realistic though, what kind of leader would use a weapon like that? That's just... genocide.
>>
What if in that small, universally hated movie "A few good men" Colonel Jessep had ordered the code red?
>>
>>20198474

"no taxation without representation"
>>
Just to clarify something, without magic I assume the Da Vincian machines we have used for the past 500 hundred years are useless, yeah? So does that mean we have some sort of electropunk flying machines?
>>
>>20198474
If you want to talk crazy, instead of the Union being mostly a few magical golems and seeding stations, with everyone else being in the Colonies, what if, Europe was able to invade, and manage to destroy everything, and enslave the people I know it sounds crazy, but this IS an alternate universe, where they don't even have Mythril!
>>
>>20198485
Meh, I don't know, it was the failure of that move that made Tom Cruise quit acting and start protesting against special interest groups. Did you hear all the stuff he said badmouthing Scientology?
>>
>>20198496
That's almost crazy enough to work. Though it still sounds stupid.
One of their leaders should be a total pimp, but like really old.
Their general should be some inexperienced guy who didn't win a single battle before he was signed on to be general, and then gets totally lucky over and over again.
>>
>>20198390
They'd be a seafaring nation, so, lots and lots of boats.
>>
>>20198475

In Earth, humans are more evil. For example, every day in every city there happens lots of murders and thieveries and stuff. It's kinda grimdark.
>>
>>20198509
I think we should just slap some giant engines onto a metal tube type thing with wings. Without magic, everything is really rough and industrial. Also, giant rocket bird things. It's a win-win.
>>
>>20198509
>>20198509
I... wow, how far do we want to go back with these changes, because if the engineer DaVinci isn't in place A LOT of these inventions might never occur, like that bomb that somebody mentioned. They wouldn't be able to build on Leonardo's designs.

They don't have magic, remember. They use electropunk. I know it's kind of hard to wrap your head around.

Okay guys, since they don't have magic, What if space is super dangerous to enter, and they don't have any contact with the Martians?
>>
>>20198509

Yes. Basically there is the "Helicopter", which is the electopunk version of the Vincian Flier. It works with something called "Petrol", a substance which has enormous amounts of energy inside.

There are also Aeroplanes, which can fly very fast. Even faster than sound. I know, that sounds impossible but this is fantasy lol. We can just handwave it as "technology".

There are also something called Zeppelin which flies using superlight gas but it needs a huge baloon to lift a small passenger compartment so it's not very useful.

what if the romans never conquered the scots, therefore never finding the time-portal to the year 5,000 that let the Roman civilization's technology jump forward so drastically?

What if the Romans were conquered by barbaric people instead?
LOL

>Not having an Omnimachine that flies faster than the speed of sound
You do realize the only way to go UP without an Elevator is an Omnimachine, right?
>>
>>20198569
Wait, I have an idea, but it's kind of grimdark, so if you don't like that I'd stop now.

What if we find out there *are* no Martians, no Neptunians, no Venusites, and no Jovians? What if Pluto wasn't even a planet? What if in the entire solar system, Humanity was all alone. Now think, how close is the nearest star? Yeah, a long way away. Now think, without magic, how would they go that far? That's just it, they wouldn't. Even if they had the tech to do it, the trip would take millions of years. They would wonder if they were alone in the universe, with no alien race with which to share the stars. Can you imagine how horrifying that is? All alone, all 15 planets and only one intelligent race?

>>20198599
Maybe ''petrol'' is the name of the nonmagical wonder fluid that fuels other things. Didn't somebody mention some nonmagical fluid fuel earlier?
>>
>>20198599
>putting everything you can't explain into the "technology" category

WOW that's not OP or exploitable or anything...What if I made a device that cast Fireballs with no casting time or Words of Power required, and could cast say, 1,000 fireballs a minute? Fucking OP in a game setting...
>>

>>
>>20198714

>>20198695
I don't think they'd have Prof. Whom PhD in this new world, with the lack of Magic and whatnot.
>>
>>20198722

...what if "fire" wasn't an element? What if... what if there were more than the Cardinal Four...? Like... a LOT more??? Or would that just fuck up the universe too much?
>>
>>20198756
Not that hard to explain. Pressurized fuel is expelled from a "nozzle", then ignited by a pilot flame, similar to how dragons do it.

A fine name, though.
>>
>>20198695
Oh man, I love Professor Whom's documentaries. I'm so glad they decided to keep the same actor rather than changing. How could anyone other than Tennants Davidson play Prof. Whom?

>>20198714
That was my thinking, honestly, it'd be like Pope Dawkins (head of the Roman Orthodox church) leading an atheist movement. It makes no sense. Where would he even hold his meetings, in some beer hall? That would just land him in jail, and I doubt anyone would follow him after that.
>>
>>20198752
Well, if magic doesn't exist, the Doctor becomes a lot more unrealistic, so I could see people mistaking it for fiction.

You know how we use magic for a lot of our entertainment and crystal spheres for long distance communication?
How can we replicate that with electropunk?
>>
>>20198776
Dude, that'd be way too complicated. There would only be a very few people who'd understand the ''technology''. Honestly, maybe some of them might not even believe it, technologists would be mistrusted like magic users were a long time ago.
>>
>>20198823

You know how some of the more eccentric alchemists weird around with empty tubes (like, empty, not even air!) i'm just throwing idéas here, don't know how it would work
>>
>>20198852
Why should they be distrusted? It'll have been around for centuries, more or less. All you'd need to understand it is proper education, and any one get that, right?
>>
Hold up. With all this talk about religious fundamentalism in the Middle East, and also monotheism, why don't people try to help/change the Middle East if they all believe in the same god and have the same religion?

Doesn't the existence of religious fundamentalism with regular religious faith indicate that they have multiple gods and therefore multiple forms of worship?
>>
>>20198722
Didn't you read earlier, there aren't any nearby aliens, and without magic, the Gorlaaxions wouldn't get there until... like, 2013 or something.
>>
>>20198877
Well, they could all be from the same religious root, but some manner of divergence. Like, some guy is born, claims to be the son of god, and picks up followers. Judaism would split into whatever you wanna call this new religion. "Christanity" was used previously, right? Let's call it that. Then there could be another split with another prophet changing things for the islamic nations.
>>
>>20198912
But that's just dumb. They should realize that they all have the same god and come together.

...Oh shit, no magic means no manifestations, doesn't it.

Well, if we're going to keep going with the theme of grimdark, maybe education isn't available to everyone... or is that a bit too much? I don't want to get too bleak, I mean, this isn't the Terrortubbies program.
>>
>>20199000
Ugh. Did that wrong.

Yep. And don't forget the line from that old illuso-tale, "Inquisitors in Black,"
>A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow.
>>
>>20198877
Well, maybe they argue over tiny little differences, small interpretations. Oh! What if instead of meeting and resolving differences at a inter-religious conference every year, the different faiths are all divided, and they are at each other's throats all the time, much less meet with each other. As >>20198928 put it, there'd be no way to tell that they were actually worshipping the same god, they'd think each of them has the only and the right god.
>>

Well, maybe... oh, maybe the whole point of it is that solutions are easy, and right in front of them, but it's greed that keeps getting in the way of things. Maybe it could be some kind of warning, you know, like those movies that try and portray the world as if the Robot Revolution never happened. Imagine if we left Synthetic-Americans in poverty and never granted them civil rights? What if the machine uprising was put down? let's make that true. let's say that solutions are just around the corner, that despite all their struggles that solutions are available, but that things like greed, pride, and power are just in the way. it's a bit much, but i think it could also explain how a lot of even our best people irl could be monsters in this world. it could even be a result of nonmagic, perhaps they do have magic, but instead of seeing the error of their ways during the witch hunts and dark ages, they ended up killing all the world's magically-gifted humans, and they never went on to interbreed with the rest of us, meaning that without magical talent disseminating into earth's populations, creating witch doctors, sorcerers, runesmiths, imagineers, mathemagicians, and alchemistry majors... they had magic, but without realizing it, they killed their own best hope.

Okay, so how about this? You know how Germany starts a second world war, right? Well, at the start of the war, the Germans seem almost unbeatable. Like, they defeat France in just a few weeks, even though France has this huge army, but the Germans just go through it like butter. And then they own most of Europe, except for Britain and Russia, because the Italians and the Austr-Hungarians and everybody is on their side. Also, the Germans should be the bad guys, so maybe they should do things like burn books and say they own the entire planet. And maybe they could start killing certain people for no real reason, too, just because they hate people and they're evil. And their uniforms should have skulls on them, so everyone knows they're the bad guys.

Anyway, so the Germans own most of Europe, right? But they decide to invade Russia, because the Russians are Marxists in this universe and Germans hate that for some reason. And it looks like they'll almost take over Russia, and there are all these battles where the Russians get completely annihilated, but then the Russians barely stop them outside of Moscow, even though lots of Russians die. But the Germans are going to just wait until the winter is over, and then attack again.
>>
>>20199611
So everybody thinks that the evil Germans are going to take over the world, right? Except the Americans don't care, because it's all on a different continent. But then they get bombed in the Pacific by somebody like Japan or something, and because the Germans are friends with the Japanese they decide to beat the Germans and save the world.

So first the Americans and their British friends decide to invade Italy, who are kind of comic relief, because they can never do anything right and they screw up everything the Germans tell them to do. And so the Italians surrender right away, but then the Germans move into Italy and suddenly the Americans and British can't move up anymore.

So right now there's all these countries fighting against the evil Germans with the Americans, like Canada and Mexico, and Australia, and maybe Brazil or something, and they call themselves 'The Alliance' because that sounds cool. And the Germans and the Japanese call themselves the Axis, because they're the Axis of Evil.

So the Alliance (Or 'Allies' for short) decide to invade France and end the Germans once and for all. But all the German soldiers are super tough and mean, so it's really hard for them. And when the do invade, lots of allied soldiers die really heroically, and it almost looks like the Germans will win, but then the allies pull off a stunning defeat in France and recapture all of it in just a couple of months. So then the Allies are moving in to Germany from the west, and the Russians are coming in from the east (Because they defeated the Germans in Russia too) and eventually the Germans surrender to them. And then the allies make the Germans promise never to be evil again, and they all become good guys.
>>
>>20199623
Oh yeah, I guess the Japanese are still there, too. Uh...maybe the Americans make a giant bomb that destroys entire cities, and they use it to make Japan surrender, and then the Japanese promise never to be evil again and they become friends with America
>>
Okay, so what if instead of putting the most intelligent and effective leaders in political power, the majority of governments were comprised of people elected by the uneducated masses through some kind of polling system.

Their scientists should be super-reckless. Like maybe at some underground facility there's a machine that could straight up just make a black hole and kill everyone - but they do it anyway.

And like, that sort of thing just happens every day. They don't use anti-gravity to send people to space, just shoot people into the sky by strapping explosives to the backs of their vehicles.

You know what, fuck it, let's make everything they use run on explosions.
>>
>>20199581
