Last time on Summoned Hero, after talking with Cadencia in the main city of Vernegard, you were interrupted by the attacking Remnants called the Three Stooges. Well, one was a large lizard named Aranaman which is now trying to get up from the ground. Ahanati which is recovering from being blown to bits. The last one, Maougren, is a large multi-armed island like monster that currently floats in the air!

------------

Cadencia stands there in the background, breathing in and out. She tries to recover her energy from dispatching Ahanati. Maougren roars in pain and launches its multiple arms down to the ground. It lifts up, throwing dirt and chunks of rock everywhere. They fall from the sky like rain, pelting the island and you. You grip the Zweihander and hold it to the sky, protecing yourself from the brunt of the assault.

"Dammit." you mumble under your breath. Your mind races, your blood pumps. You try and think of a counter strategy. The creature was so high up in the sky. You could probably jump, but would you cover the distance in time?

>What to do?
>>
>>20206524
Alright, can we take cover behind something and fire our assault rifle at Maougren?

I'm trying to remember, but doesn't he also have hundreds of eyes in addition to thousands of arms?
Could we shoot out his eyes?
>>
>>20206524

Leap into the air and cleave the fucker in half.
>>
>>20206567
He's pretty much a floating island, though. He's supposed to be bigger than Aranaman, and he's a Godzilla-class monster.
We can cleave INTO Maougren, but I don't think our zweihander is big enough to cut him in half.

It'd be like trying to cut a watermelon in half with a scalpel.
>>
Let's get Cadencia to cast a spell.
>>
>>20206630
>She tries to recover her energy from dispatching Ahanati
Looks like she's still trying to get back her MP, though.
>>
>>20206563
Okay, I checked.
Maougren's description does make mention of a 'thousand eyes'. We can try to create blind spots by shooting out his eyes, and then jumping in and attack from those blind spots.
>>
I noticed that we haven't actually KILLED any of these Remnants yet.

Instead of trying to kill Maougren right now, maybe we should just incapacitate him a little, and finish off Aranaman while he's still on the ground.
Cut out his throat or something.

The multiples eyes that move independantly from the arms. They look straight at you, focusing in on their target. The arms move up slowly before forming into an arc. In the next instant, they snap down and fly through the air, coming straight for you. You grip the hilt of your Zweihander, preparing for the assault.

"HAH!" you twist the Zweihander, slashing the three arms that aim to tear into your throat. Ten more come down, you avoid them by twisting your body. You roll three times, flip into the air and fall to the ground, landing on your feet. The Zweihander vanishes and in its place forms the assault rifle. You look at its own eyes and let loose a flurry of bullets. One eye, two, three burst into scarlet. Each eye that's come into contact with a bullet recedes into the arm as if retreating. You douse the air with more bullets.

Two , three, eight tentacles recede. It was tedious but necessary. Each passing moment, even more tentacles fall back into the main body of Maougren.

> What to do?
>>
>>20206661
That sounds like a good Idea. Also get our liveline out of the bombardmentzone if possible.
>>
>>20206717

Slice it in half with that energy attack we used on Aisha.
>>
>>20206717
Can we see any kind of central core or fissure in Maougren's body that might be a weak point?

Keep shooting a bit more to create an opening in his defenses, and see if we can use that powered up zweihander attack we used when fighting Aisha to create a large fissure in Maougren's island body.
>>
>>20206717
Keep shooting eyes, then jump up if you have blindsided it. Then Cleave and Smite.

Keep on shooting. You hold the trigger down, continuing the barrage of bullets onto the large island's tentacle-eye. The main goal was to find some sort of opening on the goliath's body. The tentacles keep receding. Soon, a large section is wide open to attack. That scarlet mist from before seeps in from the wounds placed onto the eye balls. You leap back to avoid any getting into your lungs. "Aha, nice try, you're not getting me that easily."

Maougren releases a high-pitched roar. The tentacles that are outstretched from its body grow spikes and every single eye glows a deep red. With the opening in sight, the assault rifle dissipates into blue light, only to be replaced by the Zweihander. "Alright, ending this in one move!" with the blade held overhead, you build up all of the remaining energy into your body and pour it into the sword. A violent whirlwind branches out. It blows away the incoming tentacles. "Don't..." you swing the sword down. The blade dips into the surface of the ground. "MOVE!" the energy built up in the blade releases itself in a violent gale.

The torrent of energy makes a whirring noise as it approaches the large island. Maougren screams in pain as the energy dips into the weakened portion of its bulging, muscly flesh. Blood rains into the air. The beam burrows itself further into the body of the beast before exploding. An agonizing scream escapes the monster as it flails its tentacles into the air in a desperate attempt to counter attack. Your attack was fatal and the monster could do nothing but yell in pain. The body tips backward and falls from the sky. It soon disappears over the horizon as it falls into the Underworld.

Go to Cadencia, show her how to fistbump. If she thinks its weird.

"What? Its a sign of "you done well" back home."

You build up the same amount of energy in your sword as before. You pivot your body to face the downed Aranaman. "HAH!" you swing the sword down. Once again, the blade dips into the ground and blue wave of energy launches forward. The skin on the lizard proves to put up a nice resistance against your strongest attack, but due to the injuries inflicted on the lizard before, the energy wins. The reptile releases a loud roar before succumbing to the energy. A loud explosion rips outward in the form of a white pillar. You sigh at the easy victory and move your way on over to the impaled Ahanati. You bring up the Zweihander and swing it down, splitting into the creature's skull.

The three Remnants were defeated. Aranaman the Dayeater, Maougren the Resentter and Ahanati the Aggressor. The three that threatened the lives of those in the city were destroyed. "Great work, Cadencia." you fist bump the Summoner, who's still breathing in and out, trying to gather her energy.

"W-what's that?"

"What? It's a sign of "you done well" back home." you smile for the first time here.

"I-I see." she joins in and lets out a laugh soon after. "You did well too, actually you did most of the work."

>>
>>20207063
Let Cadencia get her magic back a bit.

"I have to admit, we made a good team. I don't get it though; surely Abner had much more experience fighting than me. He was a soldier of one of my world's greatest wars; I think I was just a civilian. Why did he die where I was able to win?
"Anyway, I suppose we should meet with your grandfather, the King, right? Get some crisis management types to get this area under control.
"I'll warn you now though; I'm not good with the whole formal manners thing."
>>
>>20207173
It wasnt Abner fighting the three, it was his cocky son. Apparently he thought he was invincible.
>>
>>20207196
But the text implies that we got the information from the journal of Abner, who was a summoned Guardian, not a born Guardian:
>You grab the journal from the previous hero that was summoned. You grab it, throw it down onto the table and start reading. The Guardian before you examined the Remnants and their ways of attacking

I'll admit, it's a bit ambiguous, because of mentioned "The Guardian before you".

"I believe that's because it was his son that fought them. I told you that, didn't I?"

"But I got the information from HIS journal though!" you make it appear in a flick of light. You hold it outward, letting Cadencia take hold of it. Cadencia takes it, flips through the pages and hands it back.

"Who's name do you see in the entry?"

"Sigurd Baxter? I'm guessing that's his son?"

"Yeah, they used the same journal. He wanted to be like his father, you see."

"I see, anyway, I suppose we should meet with your grandfather, the King, right? Get some crisis management types to get this area under control. I'll warn you though; I'm not good with the formal manners thing." your Summoner nods before taking hold of your hand. She leads you forward, across the bridge leading to Vernegard. The two of you move toward the castle with haste.

"You know, why do you even have a king? In our world democracy is pretty big. Almost no monarchies anymore. Well, I suppose other worlds, other rules." you finish the sentence with a long-winded sigh. You really did want to go back, but there had to be a situation in which your were dying to come here. With these jumbled memories, there wasn't much you could grab from your old life to use here.

"Because we need someone to keep order." she answers plainly. You nod to that because dragging that issue on further would just be you pressing your views onto her own, which were foreign to begin with. It was a lose-lose situation.

"Is the city of Vernegard the only one on this island? Are there more?"

"The only city, yes, the only place with people, no. There's a Bast village in the forest, there's also a pier, well an Atlaseer pier."

"What's that?"

"Oh, that's where we board and travel to other islands. Atlaseer Whales, they're called. They're pretty big, enough to hold a couple hundred people. Gentle creatures, too."

"Flying whales?" excitement stirs in the depths of your soul. "A-anyway, how many times do Remnants come up here, as in, how many times do they attack?"

"Those three were the common ones that usually came to terrorize the island. They came twice a month. Other Remnants usually don't bother each others territory. They're like animals that way, and now that this place is free... well, you can expect some new opponents." Cadencia says with a long-winded sigh like your own. She runs a hand through her hair, steps in front of you and walks in stride.

>What to do?
>>
>>20207575
"So how long before some other nasties come calling? Also those flying whales sound awesome"
>>
>>20207575
"Really? Did anyone try to only beat the remnant up and then keep it in place weakened? Might stave away further attacks."

"Well, now that i think about it its probably a stupid idea. Would be far better if we could get a tame one! Yeah, a tame Remnant, that sounds cool. I don't suppose we can negotiate with em?"
>>
>>20207575
"So these Remnants, are they sapient? They've obviously got some rudimentary intellect, but anything beyond that? Can they be reasoned with, negotiated with?"

"So how long before other nasties come calling? Also, those flying whales sound awesome!"

"Yes, they are amazing. Other Remnants, you mean? Probably within two or so weeks, once they realize no one is here anymore." the castle comes into view as the two of you walk on the main pathway.

"So these remnants, are they sapient? They've obviously got some rudimentary intellect, but anything beyond that? Can they be reasoned with, negotiated with?"

"I've talked to a Remnant before, actually. Teijus, the Eternal One. She's calm and kind, despite her looks and it really depends. Remnants, from what she told me, were once human beings who succumbed to Oblivion and lost themselves. Once they're taken over by their ambitions, there's no turning back. That's why they transform."

So Remnants were humans that were 'possessed' and influenced by Oblivion. Pleasant.

>Wait, who's Teijus and when did you talk to her?
>How do you become a Remnant?
>What to do?

"And what's the catalyst that starts the transformation into a Remnant?"

Continue walking behind Candencia.
>>
>>20207761
>fucking 4chinz

>>
"Most Remnants are still hostile, right? And as intelligent as humans... That makes things hard. I thought we could train one if we smack it on the head often enough, but if they are sapient that might just make them angry."

"Hm, is there anything the Remnants need? Like, what are they eating, are they drinking, can they get ill?"

"Wait, so it's possible for a Remnants to not be hostile? Okay, that does change things up a bit. This Teijus, is she still alive? Has any island worked together with a Remnant to fend off other Remnants?"

"It's possible, yes. Teijus is still alive and about that last one? I really don't know. Vernegard hasn't, and from what I've heard the usual response to Remnants is to exterminate them."

"Hm... what's the catalyst taht starts the transformation into a Remnant?"

"Contact with Oblivion either directly or indirectly. That triggers the transformation. From then on, it's pushed into further stages by that person's own ambitions and emotions. Teijus is still 'human' because she's fighting it."

"I see. Is ther eanything that remnants needs? Like, what are they eating, are they drinking, can they get ill?"

"Why do you think they attack the floating islands and attack humans? Once a human turns, they become a monster that devours the soul of each living being, be it plant, animal or human, they have to feed. Teijus theorizes that this is the way for the Remnant to become 'whole' again, or to become human, but she still doesn't know."

Since you haven't went in depth with the Remnant problem, it only made sense for Cadencia to start discussing it now.

The castle was only a few meters away.

>What to do?
>>
>>20207929
Lets go meet her grand who ever, also are there any etiquette rules we need to follow?
>>
>>20207929
Enter the castle with Cadencia.
Ask her if there's any special etiquette we need to follow.
>>
>>20207929

Well, i was thinking that it might be possible to train a Remnant. If it behaves, give it some plants to suck the soul out. If it does something bad, smack it around properly. Pavlovs Conditioning. Its more of a crazy plan right now but might be usefull in the long term.

Otherwise, well, just go into the castle. But dont bend over to the king or anyone. We dont need to go out of our way to antagonise him but we are still among equals here, he needs us to smack monsters around.
>>
>>20208006

The two of you make it past the bridge connecting the castle to the main town. The guards greet both you and Cadencia, and one of them questions your credibility as a Guardian. Cadencia proves it, the two of you move on your way.

"Can I see grandfather?" Cadencia says with a smile and a curtsy. The guardian nods, then looks straight at you with narrowed eyes. He scoffs, opens the door and scoffs as he looks away. You chuckle inwardly. "Here he is Grandfather, the Guardian of Vernegard, Anon the Nameless!"

"That name seems something like a Remnant would have." the man replies as he stands up. He has a long beard, blue, glazed eyes and a fragile posture. He looks like he's seventy and about to keel over dead. "So Anon the Nameless? Huh, a title more than a name. I am Kirgard Vernagard the IXth."

"That's a lot of numbers."

"Indeed." he replies, turning away to look out the window overlooking the forest near the back of the city. "So, what would you ask of me?"

"Dunno, i just kinda got here cause i thought it was customary to pay the king i am going to work for a visit. I also want to inform you that we got rid of Aranaman, Maougren and Ahanati. Oh, and your granddaughter messed up the summoning spell. I dont remember anything about back home anymore, so i asked her to find a way to send me back after i am not needed anymore."
>>
"An army, a lot of rope, information and assistance in returning me to my world as well as restoring my memories. There were complications in my cross over here."

"Oh? An army I can provide, rope, sure. Information? Tell me of what kind, and my Granddaughter will help you with that last one. However, you're able to look through the castle library and search for what you need." the man says with a smile on his face. The aura he radiates is one of wisdom and experience. His words hold meaning, except when he said 'yes' to the rope thing.

You stop to think for a moment. That was a bit easy, but anyway, you look to Cadencia, "Well that was.. uh.."

"Don't worry, I'll handle it.. but I'm going to go tomorrow. It's getting pretty late, after all and you're probably tired. Do you want to sleep at my house or do you want a room in the castle?"

After your talk with Cadencia, she gives you enough money to stay at the Inn for the night. Money here was actually small pieces of gold, which was rather convenient. You move through the city of Vernegard with haste. You don't run into any familiar faces from before, so that's good enough. Those two would have been Valen and Aisha, the two that picked fights with you before.

"I'll probably be seeing them tomorrow." you mumble under your breath as your eyes close. You sigh, hold out your hand and press the Inn door open. Well, it was an Inn and it doubled as a pub too.

"Hey there stranger, you interested in staying?"

"Yeah."

"That'll be 10-"

You place the money on the table and flash the Innkeeper a kind smile. "There you are."

"Well, well, enjoy your stay."
