It's time, /tg/! From the ashes of the old thread shall it be re-born anew! The one and only Civilization Game! (Man we need a better name than that)...
>>
>>20277173
Let's start!
>>
Your people have wandered since the beginning of memory. Not even in the elders’ oldest tales, has there been a time when you did not move from place to place, following the herds. With tools of wood and of stone and the secret of fire, your set themselves apart from the animals. By staying together, as a tribe and by wielding spears and torches, you are strong and need not fear predators, as your ancestor’s ancestors once did.

You have followed the herds for a long time, but now, something has changed. You have come to this place and found the lands to be rich with game to hunt. Some of your tribe also claim to have seen signs of plants that are good to eat, as well as a ready supply of fresh, clean water. This is a good place and your tribe has set up its tents here and agreed; you will live in this place for quite some time.

What is the place you have settled?
A) Savannah
B) Steppes
C) Cold Forest
D) Temperate Forest
E) Hot Forest/jungle
F) Mountainous
G) Mixed (GM’s choice)

I’ve not included every imaginable terrain type for a reason. Though I may have missed a few, these are, to the best of my knowledge, the first kinds of places human civilization developed. If you think I’ve missed anything, say so and if enough people want it, we’ll go with that.

E, aztec style bitches.
>>
A brief reminder that I will NOT be hand-holding through this game. Your decision here will have a HUGE impact on the difficulty of the early stages, so chose carefully.

On another note, 'Mountainous' does not mean on the slopes of everest, but in a mountainous region, so lots of valleys, large and small.
>>

>>
E

Let's see a civilization thread that lasts longer than 3 threads.
>>
>>20277233
Believe me, I intend for this to go on for some time.

I will give this first choice until quarter to, then go with the winning vote. Currently, Forest and jungle are tied. Be warned that both pose their own challenges, from the wildlife, to the seasons.
>>
rolled 5 = 5

Alright, as we currently have a tie, the winner will be decided by die roll. 1-3 is jungle, 4-6 is forest.
>>
Your people have chosen to settle in a temporate forest. Your village now stands beside a wide and fresh river. Nearby there are the herds that so drew you to stay in this area. Other than that, you have not scouted the area enough to know much about the environment.

It all depends on keeping interests. I did about two threads worth of "Stone Troll Civ", but eventually people just stopped posting. I'll be here with you, OP, to keep it running <3
>>
You can perform ONE action this turn, due to your population (The number of elders and children is ON TOP of the base number, which is adults able to work, reproduce, etc.)

A) Send out scouts (specify direction)
B) Send some hunters out to catch game
C) Have your wise ones research something (specify)
D) Hold a cultural event
E) Craft specific objects
F) Other
>>
B, we should get some more food before we start to hold any great events or go scouting for possible threaths. Our food IS only 4/10 after all.
>>
RULES ALERT
I will be alerting players to rules as and when they become required, or when requested to clarify an issue.

Research - You cannot research something you have no reason, or means to do so. For instance, you cannot research agriculture without seeds to plant. Further, some research will take longer and yield poorer results, if its logical prequels have no been researched, for instance, iron working will yield poor results if more basic forms of metal working are not researched first.

Crafting - You don't need to craft every little thing, like arrows, or tools. This option of for crafting especially large, or unusual orders.
>>
B
>>
What the fuck, OP? You said 4:30p Eastern, but you start the thread at 3:30p Eastern? The fuck?

I'll still play, but I'm not happy that I missed out on the beginning of the game over this shit.
>>
>>20277461
Ah hell, did I mis-calculate? I'm so sorry; I'm running on GMT here. I thought EST was 4 hours behind, not five. Daylight Savings Time has got me all screwed up.

Tallying votes at 10 past. Then I'll endevour to move to a new turn every 15 minutes. 10, if there's lots of response.
>>
B, by the way.
>>
Sorry. It's just that you pretty much started the game while I was at work.

Nevermind. Not like I missed much, anyway.
>>
Your hunters return with several fat, tasty deer. According to them, the docile and calm, as well as fairly numerous. They were practically able to walk right up and pick their catch, although they suspect this will not happen for much longer. The elders warn against over-hunting, cautioning that, unlike before, we cannot simply move on and follow a new herd, if we are to stay in this place.

Send your hunters to the river to catch fish

Can we fish?
If we can't, have the wise men invent fishing.
>>
A, we should send scouts to explore the area along the river, there might be someone else living on that riverbank aswell.
>>
>>20277667
Fishing is not currently a skill your tribe possesses.
>>
I say we scout around. We'd better learn about the area around us if we're to better use the land we've claimed.

A... let's say south.
>>
>>20277721
Your tribe currently has no knowlege of the compass, or advanced navigation beyond 'follow the herds'. Vote counted as a desire to scout downstream.
>>
>>20277688
Instead of what I said, this.
>>
A
Explore THE RIVER ITSELF. See fish. Decide you desperately need to learn how to catch the little buggers.
>>
Your scouts leave downriver, taking some food with them. They return after almost one moon cycle and report that downstream, the river narrows significantly and grows much more rapid, its sides lined with broken rocks. They explored until half their food was gone, then returned to the tribe. They report that downriver, the trees grow much taller and denser-packed, with thin, sharp points for leaves.

>>
>>20277878
The trees are extremely tall, about as large around as two men and towering over the rest of the forest.
>>
A, scout upstream!
>>
Your scouts head upstream, taking food with them again and returning when it runs out. One of the scouts is badly hurt and having to be dragged on a travois! The scouts report that upstream, the river starts to curve widely. Upstream, they ran into a very large, powerful creature, with though skin and bristly hair. Large tusks curled from its mouth and it seemed very territorial. Most of the scouts escaped by climbing trees, but one wasn't so lucky. His leg is very badly gored. The scouts also report a very sticky mud to the north, reddish-brown in colour and sticking to their feet. While by the river it was wet and sticky, away from the water, where it had been warmed by the sun, it was hard and cracked, more so than normal earth.

Later that moon cycle, the tribe reports a very strange thing. Children playing by the river have found an unusual amount of large fish simming valiantly upstream!

You know what to do, OP.
>>
C, have our scouts return to collect some of this mud, so that our wise men might determine what we can do with it.

If that's two turns, then gather mud first, then research next turn.
>>
rolled 1 = 1

As there's no consensus to act on, the village is currently split. Rolling for the action. 1-2 it's researching basic wound care. 3-4 it's looking into the strange quantity of fish. 5-6 it's fetching the mud.
>>
>>20278045
What need do we have in collecting mud?
We can't eat mud. But we can eat fish.
>>
Your wise ones examine the wounded scout's leg and try to figure out a way to stave off infection and staunch the bleeding. Bandages are fashioned from strips of hide, moss and the thickest cobebs that can be gathered. The scout is still badly wounded, but to all signs, he will make a full recovery!

This. We should also remember this season, if more fish start to arrive this time next year, it might be good time to prepare for mass fishing.
>>
Look into the fish, then.

I was thinking if that mud was clay, then we can use it for crafting purposes.
>>
It's getting colder. I think we would do well to look into tent insulation.
>>
Your wise ones and hunters are somewhat baffled by the large number of fish, at first, until one suggests this is much like the migration of the herds, but with creatures your people have not paid much mind to until now. A little experimentation and some slightly stabbed toes later, the wise ones and hunters have created a lighter spear, barbed with flint, to catch fish with effectively. The first catch is quite bountious, due to the number and the fact that everyone wants to try the new creation.

The men the wise ones sent out to retrieve the strange mud the scouts discovered arive back a day later than they were expected, having dragged the heavy mud back on travois, along the bank of the river. More to the point, they are perplexed by why the elders are so interested in it!

The wounded scout has recovered! Although his wounded leg means he's unlikely to hunt or run well again in the future, he is still able and willing to do work around the village.

Ah good. Now we're all caught up...

Remembering what your scouts reported in the summertime, your wise men start experimenting with the strange mud, that they have dubbed 'clay'. Apart from some small children playing in it and running off, drying themselves by the fire, the research goes fairly well. One of the wise ones hits upon the idea of fashioning the clay into a bowl shape, then letting it dry by the fire. It's soon discovered the best way to dry the clay is to burry it in the embers of the fire, pulling it out later with a long stick. Your wise ones predict many uses for this new technology!

Your tribe has mastered pottery!

Mechanically speaking, learning to preserve food will increase your maximum amount by a little.

D/F Research/craft water travel(rafts) for fishing and exploration.

Good plan! We send them down there with clay to throw if they get in trouble. Do you not remember our hunter? We need ways to kill large game easily.

The boar was upstream, near the clay. The rapids were downstream.

Finally, I've updated the turn report fully. Sorry I've not got my act 100% together.

Your scouts venture out into the forest, away from the river, taking smoked provisions with them. By the end of the moon cycle, they return, bringing news. One group in particular reports that he found a large grove of trees that were covered in white and pink flowers. Another reports a thicket of spiney brambles that he had trouble navigating through. Two of the scouts report they had to run for their lives, after they found the lair of the wolves heard during winter, in an area of ground dotted with large stones, nestled beneath the roots of a huge oak.

Two children have become adults!

Nets!

How far across is the river and can people swim?
>>
>>20279463
Want to try it? No-one has tried to swim the full distance yet.
>>
>>20279434
We need something to defend ourselves with, we should make something to stop attacks with, wood is strong, maybe make something out of that? (Trying to give my votes with the thoughts of the villagers here) D research shields
>>
Is each turn basically one month?
Can't we hunt and fish at the same time? in any case we need more food.
>>
B.) Hunt for more meat and hides
>>
5/13 is sad. Gather food.
>>
>>20279496
Sure, I've done some triathlons. You didn't answer the question, how wide is the rier?
>>
>>20279513
Yes.
>>
>>20279501
It should be noted that while hunting, such contraptions would not do much more than get in the way. They seem like poor weapons against animals, when a spear and fire works well.

Good work portraying your vote realistically however!

>>20279513
Hunting and fishing simultaneously will come with greater population. Each turn is as yet undefined; your tribe hasn't researched something like timekeeping.
>>
C- Go fishing. In doing so, some of our number may be able to gauge how deep the river is. If it can be forded at this point, we could explore on the opposite bank.
>>
Just saying, but we've been running out of hides for about three turns now... >.>
>>
>>20279581
We've been running out of winter for three turns now, but point, lets go hunt something hairy
>>
For the love of the gods that you probably don't know exist yet, research agriculture already. How can you call yourselves a civilization without agriculture?

Hunting-based food is for wandering tribes, not a settlement. They can follow the herds.
>>
>>20279618
Sure I'll get right on that right after i develop enough to know what seeds are.
>>
>>20279618
We don't have the seeds, or even non-meat food to begin that.
>>
>>20279534
The river is (if I've looked up the width of real-world river right...) about 1km across. A bit of a distance to swim. It's narrower at the rapids, but your scouts can't measure the exact width.

Your hunters depart for the herds and bring back a healthy haul. Having had time to recover from the last hunt, the deers' numbers are lagely un-touched. In addition to the meat, the hides are also a very welcome addition to the tribe.

C we can hold off on fishing if we get nets, the nets will increase our fishing yield.
>>

Meant D nets

This turn's choices will be the last for today. It's starting to get late, here in England.
>>
>>20279650
True but like this anon said
>>20279618
we should scout the tree glade a little and/or forage for edible plants
>>
D) Invent the Net. (I mean the Internet, of course)
>>
>>20279680
I second this. We should deploy a foraging party with bowls and bags to gather berries in the glade.

>>20279670
Thanks a ton for facilitating this.
>>
>>20279680
This. Be lookin' for dem plants.
>>
G.) Forage in the glade for edible plants and flowers, at the very least the pretty colors and fragrance should make everyone happier.
>>
>>20279649
Thanks for GMing. Having tons of fun with this game.

No trouble at all! I quite enjoyed running this thread.

Your scouts head out to investigate the glade with the flowering trees and discover the small, hard beginnings of fruit starting to grow on the branches. Sadly, as it is currently summer, there is nothing to harvest there, but they report back that the trees are definitely fruit-bearing. They also stop by the thicket on the way back and report small, green berries starting to grow there.

EVENT
Your tribesmen report something astonishing one evening! While one of the children was climbing a tall tree, she saw a thin column of smoke off in the distance! What could this mean? Another tribe?

I suppose you'll have to come back next time to find out! The next game is on Tuesday, at 4:30, Eastern Standard Time and yes, this time I'll actually try to get it right. I'm glad you all had fun, I'll archive this thread and provide a link at the beginning of the next one. Until the next time, stay safe and life well!
>>
Thanks, OP!
That was an interesting start! I'll try not to miss the next one!
