The Rain often comes down, you know that there is a hole in the world and the sky weeps
The Gods are petty, you know it because you play their games
The Hearts of men are fickle and jealous, you know it to be so as the greatest lie murdered by the hands of their fellows
The Outside hungers, you feel it in your bones as they draw near
The First are gone, you feel it as you look upon their ancient works
The World is yours, you know it because you will accept nothing less

********************************************************

For Destiny, choose a Major Arcana from the Tarot: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_Arcana

For background, choose a Suit: Hearts, Diamonds, Spades, Clubs, or Joker

For the mode of this Quest, choose a Chess Piece:

Pawn- If you want a gritty, hands on quest with little beyond your immediate concerns pick pawn. A bigger destiny may lie in the future.

Knight, Bishop, Rook- If you don't want to be a mere Pawn but do not desire the power of a Queen, these are acceptable.

Queen- If you want to be a quest in which you are a piece in the game, but want to be a powerful piece, choose Queen.

King- Your character will be a badass, but the focus of the Quest will be on the strategic use of the pieces and the way you play the game. Most combat will be about tactics and strategy.

You have 30 minutes to decide.
>>
The fool, the Joker, and hail to the King!

The Sun, clubs, and knight.

The Tower
Hearts

>>
Alright guys. Lets get our shit together.
First of all, we should probably pick an Arcana that means something good, meaning fuck the tower.
As for background, i don't know what they represent, but joker sounds adaptable.
As for piece, we need to figure out that too.
>>
Bumping for more input.
>>
>>20322878

At this point I'll speak only on the last choice: if you want a Quest where you call the shots and make a lot of strategic decisions, pick King. If you want a Quest where you go get shit done, pick Queen or something higher than Pawn. If you want to be in the trenches and fight your way up, pick Pawn.

According to Wikipedia, hearts is clergy, diamonds is merchants, clubs is farmers, and spades is nobility. No idea wtf joker is supposed to mean - outsider, maybe.

The Sun represents happiness and success, which is why I picked that.

I'd rather not play King, but I'd be fine with any of the other levels.
>>
Strength, Spades, Knight
>>
>>20322589
Death, Joker, a Pawn.
>>
People seem divided on specifics, but I count three votes for some form of knight so far, two for the sun, and two each for hearts spades and joker.

edit: captcha ate this the first time, But now it seems three for Joker and three for Pawn as well.

Can we get some tie breaking going? Also perhaps it would help if I explained what the difference between a Knight, a Bishop, a Rook, and a Queen can do. A Knight has high speed aerial combat through Lancing, and is the only Lancer. A Bishop has high level Melding for both long range movement and combat. A Rook has Fury, allowing it to also move great distances in direct movement and allowing it to hit hard. The Queen has high level Melding and Fury abilities. The Pawn has combat Melding only. The King has all of the Queen's abilities sans long range movement.

Think Chess, diagonal movement/capture is Melding, direct is Fury, L-shaped jumping is flying with Lancing.
>>
Death Arcana is best Arcana here.

Because it represents Change.

It's one of the three most critical points on the Fool's Journey.

And I've been on a Persona 3 kick recently, so there's that.

It's raining outside again. It's been on like that for days now. The rain is very cold, and most of the puddles on the street outside come up to your ankles or further by now. You run your hand across the broken bits of concrete that have crumbled from the gaping hole in the wall and wonder why no one bothered to close it up and use the door. Cold air seeps in around you as you sit and ponder. The street outside is still busy, and people move up and down the sidewalks about their business. The distant horn of a car echoes against the backdrop of the rain, and you ponder who would ride in such a thing with gas going for such a premium these days.

You turn back to the inside of the room. Along the ground floor a group of Pawns like yourself sit playing at dice around the fire. They wear thick coats and jackets over whatever clothing they have pieced together from what they have found or bartered for. Weapons glisten here and there, a few pistols and maces seem to be what most of the group is armed with. A rather conspicuous package sits at the center of the encampment, and you glance outside nervously for the millionth time the past few minutes. If you had known the pickup was going to take this long you would have left the package hidden up on the second floor, not on the ground floor where someone could snatch it.

Down the hallway under the stairs you hear a gurgling sound, and the beginnings of a splash. Seems to be the pickup. You rise off of the pile of rubble you are presently sitting on and lift up the shotgun. Two nearby Pawns look up, and you nod in the direction of the first floor bathroom. They join you as you move to investigate the arrival.
>>
>>20323712
Why, Mornington Crescent, dear boy.
>>
>>20323739

You pop your head around the corner to get a bead on what's coming through. In the broken down bathroom it seems that the pipes are intact, though most of the porcelain throne is long since shattered. From the depths a figure has emerged, and even from this distance you can tell it's a Bishop. Water gushes from its form as the Merging wears off, and it rolls down to the floor in heavy sheets, most of it landing back into the leaky toilet.

The Bishop is long of limb and finger, and for a moment you almost mistake its hands for talons. Its carapace is black and a white diamond just over it's right eye tells you the Bishop's suit. You step into the room, shotgun by your side uncocked. The two Pawns step up at your back.

"We've been waiting all damn day long, where the fuck were you?"

The Bishop eyes you coolly, its body finding his native shape again.

"I had other business to take care of. Moves in the Game to make."

"Yeah, whatever. We've had the package ready for almost an hour."

"Then I'm right on time. No trouble?"

The Bishop moves past you, and the other Pawns unblock the path as he steps out into the hall and glances back and forth.

"None yet, we expecting any?"

"None yet."

He moves over to the package and bends to examine it. He pops the top of the case open and glances inside, and for the first time you get the chance to examine the contents of the package. A sort of grey substance is inside, and when you glance at it through your peripherals it seems to suck the color out of the room around it. Solid reality. The mundane. Banality. You aren't quite certain of the difference, but you know that what's in that package seems to be the unprocessed fabric of reality.

"Looks like we've got the good stuff this time.
>>
>>20323892

"Daaaaaamn."

You hear one of the nearby Pawns whistle. The Bishop snaps the case shut and stands up, lifting it effortlessly to his side.

"Jax will be coming by later in the day to pay you boys. Good job keeping things high and tight, if anyone had known this was sitting here we'd have had trouble. Some moves need to be made before this is going to pay out for our side, but..."

He glances at you and notes the grey carapace that marks you as a Joker.

"You running for us as a Merc, or are you actually signed up as a soldier?"

"Too bad. We have a pretty good thing going on you know. King's a good guy, he plays the game smart. The Queen's a real bitch though. When I got promoted from a Pawn I could've been a Queen, but that bitch be too damn jealous to let the King have a second Queen. She bitches at him and bitches at him, so finally I'm just like fuck it Bishop's fine with me."

He's walking and talking, and he steps over to the side of a wall you have marked with an "X".

"This the best way out then?"

You nod.

"Shit man, I know you're a Joker, but fuck it we take Jokers in too all the time. Just stay on the Queen bitch's good side and there won't be a problem. I'll probably be seeing you around if you wind up doing more work for us. Keep shit tight!"

He steps into the wall and merges with it. That part of the wall is made up of the same material as the sidewalk, and he presumably has flowed straight through it and down into the street itself. It occurs to you that even if you pointed your gun at the wall and blew chunks out of it he'd be maybe half a block away by the time you pulled the trigger. You turn back to the various Pawns hanging out in the bombed out remnants of the living room. White, Black, and Grey faces turn toward you. A motley of white diamonds and hearts, and black spades and clubs wink out as marks along the bodies of your comrades.

"Well man, what the fuck we do now? When do we get paid?" Chimes in a heart sitting at the dice game by the fire.
>>

Wait on Jax to come by and pay us. Maybe move upstairs or downstairs and dig in a little.
>>
This Quest has a good atmosphere and is well written but... I'm a little lost.
>>
>>20324342
same, an info dump would be lovely
>>
>>20324342

You are presently in the bombed out remnants of a presumably human city. You are a Pawn, meaning your physical abilities are not significantly different than those of a human being, save for some minor Melding abilities. Pawns, through significant accomplishments (gaining xp in rpg terms) can rack up enough points to get promoted to a different kind of "piece" with more advanced abilities.

What you know of the other pieces is that Kings are pretty tough and can communicate telepathically with their own pieces and can remotely view the world around them with just their mind. They call the shots. Knights fly really fast and blow stuff up. Bishops can Meld with just about any surface or substance, but have difficulty with certain composites and multiple things at a time. Rooks have Fury, which boils down to super speed and strength. Queens are like Bishops and Rooks all at once.

Playing the Game seems to be the mission of your race, though everyone seems to have a different idea of how the Game is played.

As far as you know humans were wiped out or driven into hiding at some point.

You are a Joker. Jokers can play like they're any suit when exposed to certain supernatural effects, but are discriminated against for crossing certain racial lines.

Clarify things a bit?
>>
Also, if you want to know something ask.
>>
>>20324236
>promoting a pawn to bishop
Queen or knight are the only options.

Also, what exactly is melding? Absorbing Man style powers, the ability to transform and control certain materials, to interact with them in some other way?
>>
>>20324313

You move your men away from the entrances and into the hallway. It will render them a bit more vulnerable to entry via Melding, but you have enough firepower pointed at the likely entry points that you aren't too worried about it.

As you move back to the door you hear a car go by again and are left to wonder who is driving around.

2d5
>>
rolled 2, 3 = 5

>>20324601
We have men? Sweet.
>>
>>20324595

Basically Melding is the ability to temporarily take on the process of a certain mixture or substance you are in contact with as well as move through it easily while partially influencing it.

As a pawn you can, say, move through a solid stone wall and grab someone on the other side. Borrowing mass and leverage from the wall you can crush them up against it. Alternately you can come out of the wall and try to reach inside of them for something vital, which is what usually happens when Pawns or Bishops kill one of the stronger pieces.

In this instance the Bishop Melded with the water in the sewers and borrowed some of its properties to fit through the pipes.
>>
what are the abilities and differences of the suits?
>>
>>20324624

(You don't really have men of your own, you're all pretty much just mercenaries guarding a shipment for some King or other.)

The walls being to shake, and something rips through the second floor and leaves the building rumbling.

"Sh-" you hear someone in the hall start to swear as the roof begins caving in there.

"Fuck fuck fuck!"

Something just blasted through one of the upper floors and the building is coming down around your head. Currently you are in the main room where the fire was. Think fast!
>>
>>20324700

Those are more like race, but when working together in teams people of one suit, or up to two suits, exhibit certain specialties.

Hearts are known for being magically inclined. Diamonds are known as merchants. Clubs are stereotyped as social but somewhat more warlike than average. Spades are known as hard workers who produce a lot of finished goods and agricultural products. Jokers are misfits.

In units working together Hearts get mild regeneration, Diamonds get an armor boost, Clubs get a boost to their attack, and Spades get perks to engineering.
>>
>>20324702
Back out to where we met the Bishop. Be prepared to run if we meet something dangerous.
>>
>>20324758
Clubs and Spades seem backwards...
>>
>>20324788

Nah.

>>20324772

So you're going to go for the bathroom or the stone wall that's meant to be melded through?
>>
>>20324848
Whoops. Thought the Bishop had come from outside somewhere. Take the fastest path to the outside, then. Don't want to get trapped by debris.
>>
>>20324885

You dive through the hole in the side of the building, and suddenly see an answer to what you were wondering about earlier: when shit blows up sometimes a door is just too slow to get through.

You roll out into the alley by the street just as the building shakes again and the ceiling in the living room caves in. You glimpse something, a flash of a red heart against a white body. Something big, maybe a Rook, is crashing through the rubble in the living room.

What's the plan?

Also 3d2
>>
rolled 1, 2, 1 = 4

>>20324931

Get the fuck out of the area. Don't be a hero. Not our problem.
>>
>>20324990

You scurry down the alley, probably unseen by the Rook smashing up the place you were just holed up in. A rumble, and you can hear another part of the building collapse in on itself. You make it to the end of the alley and just meld through the fence. You might not be able to move like a Bishop, but you're not going to let a fence slow you down.

A quick glance over your shoulder as you angle the corner tells you that the destruction has punched a few more holes in the building, and you hear screeching as the already bombed out building begins to collapse. Dust kicks up from the rubble and it chases you as your feet carry you further and further away. You book it for what feels like three, maybe four blocks before you glance back and make sure no one is following you. The coast seems clear.

What's the plan now?
>>
Hrm. Player activity at a halt for slow night, not wanting to mess things up, or confusion over what's going on?
>>
This looks interesting, just finished reading. Lets find a nice big barrier that puts us between where that building was and us. Also, lets find another group of soldiers.
>>
>>20325224

In the sense of wanting someone to help you out or in the sense of cutting your losses and looking for other mercenary work?
>>
>>20325249
Preferably working for the same king as we were just working for. I think those guys are goners, but we do need to get our payment, so hopefully they won't be too far off.

I figure camp out with them for a while then go grab the cash when the Rook is done.
>>
What are our odds of beating that Rook in a fight?
>>
were a fucking pawn we would get our asses kicked unless we have alot of friends.
>>
i vote for sticking around for a little while in order to secure payment then we find some more work.
>>
>>20325276

So hunt for any contacts or potential backup from your current employers?

>>20325289

Depends on the fight: in a white room he's just as likely to smash you as you are to reach into him and pull out his heart or blast him with your shotgun a few times (he isn't immune to bullets). However what gives most pieces such an edge over pawns is their movement ability: you have no guarantee that he wouldn't come at you to fast for you to react from a distance you weren't able to spot him from in time. He comes bounding at you from a block away over the top of a building and you aren't going to see it coming.

I give you fair odds of taking him at close or medium range though.
>>
>>20325365
>>20325276

You hang around the area for a bit, turning your mind back and forth for potential contacts you can turn to for explanations and pay.

Jax is the one who was supposed to come by and pay the guards on the package. Jax is an old Spade, and probably could have promoted up from Pawn a long time ago. He shoots whiskey in a warehouse down by the docks most days, and sees to shipping operations for his King in the city. Jax was the one who hired you to find some extra muscle and hold the package until that Bishop got there and retrieved it. He's always been fairly reliable in terms of employment, and he's had you muscle up a few groups of toughs who came by looking to close at shipments before.

After a good long while you swing by the place the Rook smashed in. There's a crowd of people standing outside, mostly Pawns but a couple of Knights and a different Rook, a Joker. Bits and pieces of Pawn are strewn about in an alley nearby as well: presumably as he smashed the place in the Rook grabbed some people and took them down the alley to ask them a few questions. No way to know what kind of answers they gave.

>I give you fair odds of taking him at close or medium range though.

Now you tel us after we book it three blocks away. From the looks of things, though, getting the fuck out seemed to be the right call.

I'm sure he assumes if we survived we'll meet him for payment. Lets head to the docks.
>>
>>20325560
God damn we are awful at rolling dice.
>>
>>20325558

(If the guy's a pro he's way more dangerous than super strength and extreme speed would suggest. If he's new at what he's doing and reveling in his promotion from Pawn he's likely to take dumb risks and get capped. It was probably the right call though, but not spoiling anything.)

>>20325560

You manage to spot Jax in the distance cutting down a side street away from the scene: looks like he spotted the trouble as he came up and is getting the fuck out of dodge. He has a couple of his fellow Pawns with him, hard hitting guys from down at the docks.

You also spot some Pawns mingling in the crowd that look a bit... shady. Not unusual for this part of town, but they seem a bit intent on investigating the other people in the crowd for your comfort. Luckily they don't seem to fixate on you at all.

Do you feel like running down Jax, waiting for him at the docks, or something else?
>>
>>20325623
We're not desperate, we don't need to chase him down the street for our pay. More professional to meet him at the docks, and we won't draw attention to ourselves in this crowd.
>>
>>20325623
I say wait at the docks, chasing him down might draw attention to us.
>>
>>20325678
>>20325672

You turn and make your way toward the docks, shotgun tucked into your trench coat. The rain still hasn't stopped either, though when you've got Rooks knocking down the building you're in it's a bit hard to notice. A wet drop hits your nose, then another plants itself on your cheek.

You keep going down the street, but every time you turn you glance back to make certain that no one is tailing you. The street seems clear of followers at least, but it's always good to make sure. You pass people here and there who's business takes them outside though. One down on his luck Joker tries to hit you up for some food or a few cigarettes, but you're used to the pace of things in the city and just keep walking.

The smell of salt in the air and fish on the market is the first indicator that you're coming up on the docks.

Any idea how you want to play things?
>>
>>20325571
Nah, all of our rolls have been about average. That one in particular looks bad but it's within half a standard deviation of the mean. If it were like 45d10, yeah, it would be terrible, but as it is it's better than rolling a 6 on 2d6.
>>
>>20325746

In the absence of other ideas you decide to just play it cool. You walk up toward the warehouse you usually meet Jax at in plain view, and note some extra muscle hanging off the rails eyeballing you. No one says a word though as you walk up, but a burly Pawn stops you as you come up on the side door. A red club stands out from his nose against white.

"Got business here?"

"Yep. Gotta hit Jax up about getting paid for a job I ran for him."

"Jax is out."

"I can wait."

"Okay, go in and just sit tight for a bit. I'll let people know you're here. Your name is?"

(I prefer to let people name characters after they've gotten a feel for how they want to play them. Go ahead.)

I take 'em straight from where I find 'em to the place, we sit on the package twitching and waiting for two days. Guy bounces, says you're gonna come by to pay us. Not ten minutes later some fuckin' Rook comes crashing through the ceiling."

"Rook? What did he look like? Did he say anything?"

"White motherfucker, red heart on his chest or some shit. I didn't stick around for a friendly chat, package I'm being payed to guard is already gone. He bust through that roof 20 minutes earlier? I cap his ass. He comes through then though, after shit's gone and I'm just waiting on pay? Well fuck that, too much risk."

"So you bounce, then what happens?"

"He knocks the whole place down, looked like he pulled a couple guys out and asked them some questions. By the time I come back he's gone, but there's some guys mingling in the crowd looking for anyone they can eye. Didn't spot my ass though. I wandered around downtown a bit, then came here looking for you."

Jax looks thoughtful for a few minutes.

"You're a good kid. You say something like that, I buy it. Fuck, who knows what went south? Might not have had shit to do with the package, might be you hired a guy who really pissed off some fucking Rook. Too big a coincidence though, not with that kind of timing. Jax nods to one of his guys who leaves the room, then reaches into his pocket and pulls out some cash. He hands it over to you.

"Tell me somethin' Jax."

"Sure."

"How come you're still a Pawn? I'd think you'd be a Queen by now, maybe something else. But a Pawn after all these years?"

"I've been a Pawn a long time. I know how to do three things: keep on breathing, get my damn job done, and avoid going one on one with people I can't handle. What does somebody like me want with bouncing all around the city, flying through the air, or getting sent into heavy combat? No, my spot is right here running the docks and making sure shit goes down how it's supposed to go down with plenty of guys who've got my back. Pawn life is the life for me."

The Pawn he nodded to comes back in and gives him a signal.

"Alright, I got something for you along this end. We want you looking for rumors on that Rook that came smashing through the place."

"I'm supposed to hunt down a Rook?"

"I'm not saying you have to box with the guy, I'm just saying that we want you to go out and find some leads on who he might be working for."

What do you think?

Fair enough.

No to the staying extra thing, you were gonna head to the front for a bit, try and get some bounty on enemy soldiers.

If possible, give him a nontraceable way he can contact you, like a mutual friend, or a dead drop or something.

Feel free to replace excuse with some other job-hunting thing if it doesn't apply.

A job's a job. You'll do it.

"Cool. Any kind of bounty on this guy should I get a shot at him?"

"Let's say two thousand if you should just happen to take his head. Four thousand if by some miracle we get to ask him something first. Five hundred just to go out and seriously look for him. A thousand if you turn up anything that leads to him or who he works for."

"So five hundred to hunt him, two thousand if I cap him, and another thousand if I make him rat out whoever is above him first? That's like... thirty five hundred? Aight."

"Kid, remember the Pawn's first rule: keep your head down and don't be a hero."

"I hear you Jax."

"I know you hear me but you don't always listen. I'm trying to keep you out of your grave here."

"It's cool, I won't try to box no Rook, we're good man, we're good."

Jax shakes his head and with that you are free to go.

>That's like... thirty five hundred?

This is why we aren't a knight.

(Math is haaaaaaaard)

You jet after taking your pay, which is about a thousand. You haggled a little bit since you figure that as the sole survivor maybe you should be taking some of the dead guys' pay, but all you get are laughs.

You make your way down away from the docks and up the street toward downtown, but as you do you notice through your peripherals a car cruising in behind you at some distance...

Make your move.
>>
>>20326904

Didn't we hear a car go by twice before the attack?
>>
>>20326904
Lets go around a lot of unnecessary corners and see if they follow. Might just be people driving.
>>
>>20326904
If we're alone, try to cut into an alley. One that a car wouldn't have any business driving down, if it can even get in. Lacking convenient alleyways, at least take a circuitous route downtown. We can't outrun a car, but we can confirm that it's following us. And absolutely worst case I guess we could meld into a building maybe, not really sure how good we are at that.
>>
>>20327020

(You did.)

>>20327061

As you try for the first corner the car eases up beside you, window open. A small stream of smoke comes up from inside. A honeyed female voice addresses you from inside.

"Why don't you hop in and have a ride?"
>>
>>20327090

"Are you propositioning me?"
>>
>>20327090
"Mom always said don't take rides from strangers. Dad said not to unless they had a lot of money."

"I am not doing that kind of work, if you catch my drift."

"Huh? I'm just offering you a ride to wherever you're going. You did just come out of my warehouse you know."

You catch a glimpse of the woman inside leaning toward the window. White skin, red diamond on her neck. Crown...

Tune in tomorrow around 5PM Central for the continuation of this quest. For now answering questions.

In our best impression of a fifty year old smoker. "10 dollars for a hand job, 20 for half and half."

IT WAS A HALF AND HALF!

You know how to use the archive, right?

Also about how much experience does it take to advance a pawn, does it cost extra to become a queen, and is upgrading only for pawns or can, say, a rook do it?
>>
>>20327361

Only for pawns. I know how to use the archive, sure, but I'm lazy and a heavy drinker. Hell, I'm knocking back 40's right now. Thank god for foolz.
>>
>>20327361

Also, exp needed to advance is high. To become a Queen is higher. To become a King is special circumstance and a fuck ton of exp.

The Black Bishop had the exp to be a Queen, Jax has enough exp to be an entire Royal Court, you don't have enough exp to be anything yet.
>>
What would have happened if we had picked something else?
>>
>>20327439

I had a game ready for a King, a Queen, or a Pawn. I didn't figure on anything else to be honest, but I could have improved or modified something.
>>
I'd archive this, but I'm going to bed and recently archived something.

Tags are always hard, so my suggestion is Collective Game, Chess Quest, Chess, Cards, Pawn

Archived.
