NEW PLAYERS WELCOME, NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY, READ ON TO FIND OUT MORE
Welcome, Fortunates, to another edition of the Fortune: Evolution Game.

Now, for this game we'll be going about this much more loosely. We'll post evolutions, discuss the details, just brainstorm this world, do that special thing of worldbuilding that /tg/ does so well. Any input or ideas are appreciated, even if you've never played with us or joined us before. Come on in. Folks are free to lend any scientific expertise in order to make this world work, so if you've got some knowledge in your noggin, don't be shy about sharing it.

I've also included my e-mail address in the relevant field, so feel free to shoot me a message about all this stuff shouldst thou desire.

Note that in the bottom right corner of the following images there will be a number, that is the creature's generation number. The creatures we start with will be "generation 1", all creatures that evolve from g1 creatures will be g2. all creatures that develop from a g2 creature will be g3 and so on and so forth. This will help me keep track of what creatures go where. Don't forget to also quote/link to the post containing the creature you're evolving from.

Hopefully this little diagram should help you understand.

All creatures on Volcano Island evolved from the aerial plankton eater called the Rainbow Blimpie. This here is the Pligmie or Pygmy Blimpie. Which plants does it eat? How big is it? Does it travel in herds or is it solitary? Well, Fortunates, that'll up to you.

Binkie or Beaked Blimpie. Aerial carnivore. Uses modified sharpened trunk to puncture their prey and drink its fluids (maybe even just their blood, like a vampire bat, but that'll be up to you folks).

A word on these Blimpies, their skin is smooth like a dolphins and they are ectothermic (sometimes called "cold-blooded"). Some species lay eggs, some give live birth. Which do which and any other details are, again, up to the players.

The plants of Volcano island developed from seeds carried upon ancient Rainbow Blimpie's backs. They include...
> Fweed
Small leek-like broadleaf weed.

> Pairagus Tree
tall tree with a wet spongy trunk and two sets of leaves. A top one that's curled up in the shape of a Hershey's Kiss and a second set that fans out radially at the top. Whether or not it has sap, and what form the sap might take is up to you all.

> Hairb
small grass with a tuberous root structure, sort of like a ginger root. It's leaves are small, soft, and fine, resembling the wispy hair of a balding old man.

> Welbery
grows out of a leafy "pot" that holds water for the plant. thin green stem has lots of enticing berries. these berries are as delicious as they look and are used by the welberry to spread its seeds (by way of the droppings of the animals who eat them).

Lastly, here's a blank map of Volcano Island. The geography, hell, even the geology of the island is up to you. That orange spot in the middle is the lava-filled top of the namesake volcano. The dotted lines around it are where the mountain begins.
Volcano Island lies right at the equator, so remember it's a tropical climate. Alright, kids, have fun now.

The big factor here will be the presence of fresh water, with it we'll have an Island paradise like Hawaii, without it it'll be a harsh rocky land like the Galapagos.

>evolving the island itself
This makes my dick rock hard.

The volcano of Volcano Island is cruel and regularly active, the area around it is constantly warmed by the turmoil within and often it will boil over erupt, spilling into the sea. With each subsequent volcanic eruption the mountain grows taller oddly enough while the lower areas cool and become rugged with obsidian and steep cliffs.

The volcano(which needs a name) has a particular path that it often follows into the sea and as such that particular area has grown outward from the initial landmass, if ever so slightly.

Due to the Grimpies' new protection against Binkies, these have developed a continuous sense of competition for food amongst themselves, making them fly the skies alone searching for baby Grimpies without a too-hard skin yet. They have also improved their hunting equipment, getting powerful talons to rip their preys apart and more importantly to penetrate the things smacking head-first into isn't a smart thing to do.

Due to them flying alone, they have developed bright blue colors to be noted by potential mates, including a long, colorful tail for the same purpose.

Hunter Binkies or Hunkies are reduced to just a handful of individuals due to the scarce food for carnivore creatures in the island.

A different type of Binkie's emerge. One with less of a nature for violence, the Humkie has come into being.

With an extended trunk taken from a recessive gene they begin to strike out wherever Wellberries can be found. They like the prick the individual berries and allow the berries to drain into the "well" where they will drink it up with a cylindrical thin tongue they dip down until they've had their fill.

The creatures tend to stay airborne and in small hums(a pack of Humkies) and will lay their eggs in rocky crags, generally near the volcano to keep their eggs warm as they are unable to land and produce heat for them themselves.

And with that, herbivore. Go on, someone eat it now.

After the first big eruption of Volcano Island's volcano, Pligmies have been strongly affected due to the scarcity of Hairbs on their zone, hence evolved to become smaller and require much less food, also maximizing energy usage losing the ability to turn their heads and propel themselves, resorting to a slug-like movement generated by small, weak appendages.

Plygmoids are small and a target to flying carnivores, hence they have slightly changed their color to match certain areas of the lava-affected terrain to camouflage better.

Alright one more for tonight. Just giving the Humkie a good jump start and things for predators to work off of. Also I wanted to include some simple charts.

The Humkies have developed a rump not unlike the ashlands and obsidian around the areas they dwell. They tend to hide in holes with their rump out to fool anything that would try to eat them. A hum(roughly 12-14 Humkies) will take over a wall and plug up all the holes they can to make it appear that the wall is natural. They also keep their eggs in these natural holes as wells and afford them extra protection with their own lives.

So... how do these Blimpies fly, at least, the ones who do fly.

>>
>>20325942

The Blimpies that are capable of flight are mostly constructed of a head that houses main organs, and a large air sack filled with light than air gases, they generally propel themselves with the "jets" on their sides that expels whatever it needs to. There is a real science-y explanation of it somewhere but that's the gist. They are slow creatures generally unless they develop a reason to be fast and thus produce new propulsion methods.

>The Hairb Pligmie

The smaller, flocking Pligmies living on the southern part of the island have continued to shrink to the point where they are small enough to hide under the leaves of the Hairb plants. These Pligmies gradually started growing thick, coarse hair, matching the colour and shape of the plants, to aid them in doing so. The hair is less prominent on females.

Their tails would often stick out above the Hairb plants they would shelter under. Two ways of combating this issue have emerged, resulting in sexual dimorphism. The males eschewed their tails entirely, while the females began to grow hair on them.

Eating the plant that provides you with camouflage is no way to get ahead, so these Pligmies now survive on the nectar of Wellberries, their snouts are positioned more suitably for extracting this.

Oops, seeing that they're berries, they definitely won't have nectar.
Let's fix that.

The increasing expansion of the Wellberry plant has resulted in a freak mutation; The Wellblossom, which sports bell-shaped flowers as opposed to berries.
Wellblossoms are found in near the areas where Hairb Pligmies are in abundance. The Hairb Pligmies have taken a liking to Wellblossom nectar, and serve as pollinators for the plant.

Kind of hard to dig up plants when you're not grounded and your entire body is basically a methane sack.

Scythed Plowbeaks have adapted to this problem with a bone-like material that grows along the spine, which assists in weighing down their bodies. The same material has grown from their "wings" and allows them to gain some grounding by digging the "scythes" into the dirt.

The added weight and the changed angle of the wings has hampered their maneuverability in the air greatly, and as a result, Scythed Plowbeaks hover very close to the ground, instead dragging their scythes in the dirt to change flight direction

Grimpies, with time, started to develop a more dense structure, gradually losing their "gas-filled" body and getting stronger muscles due to their necessity of living on ground.

Eventually their herbivore nature leaded them to discover the Pligmies that lived under the leaves of the Hairb plants. Being small and mostly harmless Pligmies ended up as a portion of Grimpies diet, the later sticking to plants but still considering the little creatures a tasty treat. This turned Grimpies into omnivores.
They also developed some sharp claws in their front extremities to improve their capacity of catching Pligmies and also prividing them with the ability of climing trees to reach the leaves of the Pairagus tree.

Much more of their body becomes covered in thick coarse hairs, and as they move around Hairbs strands of Hairb become stuck in the Plygmie's own hair, later to be picked out. Because of the plentiful amount of food available to it the Grumpie grows larger and has the size of a hippo. This type of Grumpie will become known as the Grappie (Grappling/Grumpie).

Also Grimpies look more primate-like now, being mostly herbivores with just the occasional meat snack.
Since they have a vast diet and they aren't too aggressive with their food sources, Grimpies soon find themselves living in most parts of the island.

Volcano Island was part of a chain, though now it's sister volcanoes are underwater, submerged by erosion and the raised sea levels that came with the melting of the great glaciers of the Ice Age. Living peacefully on the side of the volcano the Grappie devotes itself to this area because of the vast amount of food available. Because of the light and nutrient rich food they store very little fat which shows in their bodies that are slimming down with each new generation.

Having developed real hands now that are suited for digging up the Lesser Hairb they begin to develop smaller snouts and a separate mouth. They also develop an elongated head its purpose is not yet know. Some color patterns can be found on the Grappie because of the high concentration of pigment in the roots of the Lesser Hairb.

Scaling tall, volcanic rock formations day-in-day-out begets a shift in posture. Strong back legs accompany the Grappies' considerably powerful arms; strong enough to support bursts of upright movement.

Their patches of bright colouration are used among groups to make one another easier to spot, an ability with no ramifications when you're the largest creatures on an island with no real predators.

Though their major internal organs remain near the head, their internal gas sacs have atrophied greatly, now just a vestigial legacy of a floatier time gone by.

Because of the lack of Hairbs in the area that the Pligmies live they had to adapt they did this when they found the body of a dead Binkie. While eating this meat at first was hard the Pligmies snout started to slowly split allowing them to better take hold of the meat. As such the Pligmies became scavengers, since they do not require much food the small amount of carcasses they find are enough to survive on for now. To better move on the land their segmented tails grew larger and they developed some of their appendages into a small tentacle to pull themselves forward. Because they are still slow they further improved their camouflage so that they don’t get noticed while scavenging. At this point in time they are the size of a cat.

Those plymgies that remained in the air have evolved longer flippers and and a broader tail for improved flight. This allows for greater speed and maneuverability to escape predators, and gives them control in wind currents and thermals. They spread across the island, even reaching the neighboring volcanic spits.

Addendum; should plants with seeds be transported to the new island? The wellberry family seems designed for this.

The Cthonic blimpie's flipper moves closer to its head for more precise maneuvering. It also gains a prehensile tail for grasping branches and stems to anchor itself. However, these hurt its ability to maneuver in open air, so it sticks to dense vegetation.

The Binkies their air intake becomes larger allowing them to produce larger bursts of air to even further improve their speed. Because of this their feet from which they expel the air come slightly movable so that they can direct the air current and their direction even though it is not much.

The shields on their head grow larger to further cut down wind resistance. It should be noted that the male Binkies have larger shields then the females this is seen as a sign of fertility in the species. The males with a larger shield will have a larger amount of females that will want to mate with them. Their beaks are further encased so that the puncturing of skins is easier. They still only feed on body fluids which they absorb through pores in their beaks. On the lower part of their heads a secondary spike is starting to grow the purpose of this is not yet known.

Through compaction of the muscles that line the Grappies' backs, a line of cartilage begins to develop hard calcium deposits.

Most use MS Paint (short for Microsoft Paint) the basic image editor that comes standard in every version of Windows since the freakin' graphic interface. There are however, more powerful and more versatile programs out there. SAI, GIMP, or the one I personally use, Paint.NET (pronounced paint dot net). Think of them as the Burger King to Adobe Photoshop's McDonald's if that helps. Except the three I mentioned are absolutely free to download. Each has it's pros and cons, so you'll have to see what works for you.

Of course, if you just wanna make a quick scribble, then you don't have to set aside any extra RAM as MS Paint's already on your comp (unless you have a mac, though i wouldn't be surprised if apple has some equivalent).

Being surrounded by bigger trees combined by the lack of soil around the volcano's base, Hairbs have expanded sideways, managing to capture the nutrients on the shallow soil. These being richer nutrient-wise have made Hairb's underground fruit has become bigger. The leaves have expanded to the sides to match the nutrients gained with more sunlight.
Sadly, due to the other plants' bigger roots, the Hairb has been pushed up, sometimes even completely outside of the ground, which has generated a color change because of the lack of minerals that were present underneath the top level of soil.

A heirachy emerges, the more a Gatherer looks like a Hairb, the more attractive a mate it is.

Their propulsion can now be controlled a bit more thanks to a change in their tail shape and the ability to move their exhaust legs more. The Binkies also develop a rudimentary leg that helps them push themselves away from a prey when they are done feeding. A strange change can be seen in the Binkies shield they become slightly larger but the shields of the males start to get protrusions. For each female they have as a mate one more protrusion appears.

Because it had trouble with the shells of eggs and struggling young Blimpies, the end of its tail developed into a compact spike which it uses to puncture eggshells so that it can suck out the contents. The tail spike is further used in an attempt to strike at the nerves of young Blimpies. This is done to try and paralyze it so that it can be eaten alive. Most of the time this fails and the young Blimpie just gets wounded and struggles more.

I agree I've changed those creatures hoping other people will see some possibilities and jump on the boat so to say but it's going slow. I really wish there would be some more diversity. Maybe we need an event or something that inspires people. This island is a bit of a utopia at the moment so there isn't a real need for evolution. I think my vegetarian cthulu at this point is the ruler of this island, I think it’s cool that it got there but it wasn’t hard without any predators. I can work on those myself but then it would be just me again.

So people feel free to take any of the creatures and just edit them as you like I want to see more of what you can come up with.

Ive been posting here, and you might even be able to guess which works are mine. So i havnt left you high and dry, but now things are getting a bit stale and an event may be in order. May i offer a Predator, Prey scenario. Every creature that is an omnivore or carnivore designates a preferred target, then the prey must evolve to counteract them. Perhaps we could also get some migratory species here. those amphibious ravesharks are a viable. Maybe some other things as well.

The deveplopment towards eating predigested food continues for the scittermie, as their acidic appendage becomes more specialized, dedicated to dissolving flesh while the creature relies on its tail for movement.

The knobs at the top of their heads also continue to grow larger and thicker.

The scittermie are mainly ambush predators. They will cling to small objects with their tails where they lie in wait of prey. When the prey arrives, the scittermie will swoop down and attempt to smash the poor creature with its thick skull, before spraying it with acid so that it might be eaten.

ah, so they develop dark spots... good call, darker colours absorb heat better. perhaps later generations will burnt orange, then brown, maybe even black spots on their leaves, simply soaking up all that heat.
>>
>>20347865
>>20348037

Technically, dark spots only absorb more heat from light, which is then converted into heat. While this will be still beneficial to the Fire Kelp, it's not the most efficient option; sunlight is poor due to being blocked by ash and most of the local heat will be irradiated from the volcano.

Its best bet is dull patches (which may well also be darker), which will better absorb energy radiated in the form of heat. Getting wet water will also lower its efficiency at absorbing radiation, so perhaps a logical step forward is a felt-like material on the leaves to collect any water and roll it back into the sea?
I say felt-like rather than waxy, which would obviously be better at waterproofing, because a waxy surface would reflect more radiation.

Also, the felt-like surface that coats the Fire Kelp's leaves are a natural intumescent; meaning if the Kelp were to ever catch fire, the felt would burn first and form a char that protects the rest of the leaf.

A big brain takes up space in the skull and something's gotta give; in the case of the Grappie, that something is the strength of its jaw.
With a weaker jaw, the Grappies start to favour fruit over vegetation and attempts are made for easier harvesting. Longer arms helped for some them but this did little more than add a little diversity to the species, the major adaption was a more upright position. Long legs and a straight back gives the Grappies a leg-up on reaching for delicious fruit.

>>
>>20373535
Perhaps, but I do know my history, and the weakening of the jawbone was one of those "pebbles that creates a landslide" that enabled human intelligence.

Besides, what predators do these massive critters have? At best they'll end up like Austrolopithicus, a huge, Bigfoot looking hominid that died out. Why? Because they were herbivores and didn't need to be smart to chase down flowers. Lots of dumb herbivores, but when Cro-Magnon man came by with it's tools and what-have-you, well... Aussie didn't do too well b/c the Cro-Magnon were smarter.

Why? Because they were hunters. Not only that, they were hunted *back*. Without those kinds of pressures, intelligence has no incentive to arrive.
>>
>>20373664

The eyes of the Grappie had to develop because of the bad conditions. Now those did help them but not the whole island is covered in the ash cloud. When they get out of it naturally their eyes see more and in a different way then in the cloud. They have to develop a way to cope with all this information or else they will get some very negative problems because of an overload. So developing a bigger brain is explainable, especially if as said they just get a bit smarter but not near sentience yet.

The Trunkie, long unchanged, suddenly enters a state of evolutionary turmoil. A chance mutation allows them use of the vestigial air sack in order to produce loud trumpets by blowing air out through their trunks, capable of intimidating predators and other Trunkies. Those possessing this property begin to select for others with it, leading to the species splitting into two distinct populations.

The dominant species is the Trumpeter Blimpie, or Trumpie. They travel in small herds, with intermixing when herds meet. The leaders are typically the loudest trumpeters - larger air sacks with higher capacity are very desirable in Trumpies, and the species also develops a direct connection between their air sacks and trunks.

The second species is descended from those individuals who did not possess the trumpeting mutation. As Trumpies came to dominate the traditional habitats of Trunkies, this second species was forced to migrate to less favourable regions, such as the center of the island and the area around the volcano.

These areas are difficult habitats for the Trunkies, primarily due to being more arid than the rest of the island. The none-trumpeters had a difficult time adjusting to these lands and came close to extinction - what save them from death was the return of another hereditary Blimpie trait - the tubs, reduced to small, vestigial slits on the backs of most Volcano Island species, proved useful to this species, heretofore knows as Tubbies, as it allowed them to collect and store rainwater.

Tubbies are largely solitary animals, inhabiting the drier areas of the island, including the Lesser Hairb fields. As currently no plants grow inside their tubs, and the storage capcity of the tub is relatively small, they generally keep the tub shut by constricting the edges of it together, except when refilling it (generaly during rain or when encountering a freshwater pond). They grow to be about the size of a smallish hippo, compared to the smaller horse-sized Trumpie. A portion of the Tubbie's size consists of their tub, however.

The structure of the Trumpie's head and trunk gradually changed to enhance their trumpeting. First their trunk shortens, allowing them greater control over the musculature, then their head becomes wider and smoother, creating a more natural and comfortable head structure, and the muscular system of their trunks and air sacks develops, allowing for control over the tone and acoustics of the trumpeting.

At this point the Trumpies possess only rudimentary teeth inside of their trunk-mouth, allowing them to graze, typically on Hairb. It is difficult for them to reach higher up plants or dig roots up due to their very short trunk.

Gatherer Plygmies become longer and generally larger, consuming more hairbs. Their heavier bodies and their new shape, which is less adapted to flying assure that they spend more time on the ground. Rather than slithering like snakes, they tend to roll sideways by revolving parts of their body separately, allowing their hair to get caught on Hairb. They possess two modes of defense - a slow liftoff back into the air and their coarse, abundant hair. During liftoff they fill their air sacks, expanding somewhat like a puffer fish.

The scythed Spearbeak develops a more specialized mouth more suited to rooting around leaf litter for small seedlings and small, slow creatures.

It's limbs become more hooklike to dig through the soil in search of prey and for warding off predators.

Hunkies continue to be aerial predators, their methods changing little over the years. Their skin gradually assumed a dull blue colour, allowing them to blend into the sky. As many of their prey species grow larger, so do the Hunkies, averaging at about the size of a large bull. They float across the sky, generally unseen, until they spot prey, whether floating on or land, at which point they will rapidly descend and grab onto it, either attempting to crush or constrict it, or pierce through its skin, or in the case of smaller land creatures, pick them up then drop them from some height. They will often do this repeatedly to corpses in order to soften them up for consumption.

Hunkies possess hard, though largely dull keratin bumps on the ends of their split, claw-like trunk. They still possess decorative flaps and a vibrant tail, however, these are on its back, hidden from view to the creatures below. Hunkies prefer the smaller land species or the young of larger ones, including eggs.

The Lavampie's coating grows harder, and better mimics the surrounding area, leaving it well protected from most predators. It has adopted a larger muscle mass in its flippers, allowing it to push this extra weight with relative ease.

Binkies near the coast begin to collect Kelp Fweed to line their nests. They time the decomposition of the Fweed with the period in which their eggs will be lain; the natural heat of rotting Fweed keeps their eggs toasty while the Binkies hunt.

It's just a bull-sized zeppelin hawk which hunts by dragging off blimpie babies then dropping them from huge altitudes until they're a fine mush. You know, standard fare.

Anyway, I'm thinking once we hit the image limit I'll put these guys up onto the wiki. Maybe >>20347312 as well.
>>
>>20384348
Hmm, like a combination of an alligator (decomposing vegetation warming the eggs) with a seagull (coastal nests). I like it.

>>20386954
The bump is most appreciated, Fortunate.

Alright, I'm thinking it might be time for an event soon, just let me do some thinking, see if I can come up with something, though if any of the players have ideas feel free to post them. Nothing too crazy, like a meteor crashing (that would affect the entire planet) but something continent scale could work. Remember, this "island" is probably about the size of France. That dotted line on the map here: >>20324584? That's not the beginning of the mountain, that's just where the elevation starts to go up. The very first few miles in it's just the *foothills*. Like, if it were the Rocky Mountains, that line would probably be the border of the state of Colorado, where the Midwest Prairies begin going imperceptibly up. Keep that in mind, sorry I didn't mention that earlier.
>>
A hurricane would make sense. Also I think there should be a new thread soon.
>>
>>20387710
True, we're 144/150 when it comes to image limit. Perhaps we'll use the event as a kickstarter for the new thread, or perhaps use it for part 7, as the other regions got about one thread each. Mayhaps we could just move on to the next area before folks run out of ideas.
>>
>>20387756
That sounds grand. I support you.
>>
>>20387644
Totally jinxed there, bro.

As for the event, since we're at 144 images, does that mean we're going for another thread after this one?

Also, while I'm at it, I've been thinking about the Lavimpies, and I can't really find any way of justifying them swimming directly in the lava. I'm thinking maybe some microscopic thermophile could eventually adapt to it. The Lavimpies themselves should probably stick to hydrothermal vents and the areas around lava flows - as Blimpie descendants they could even eventually adapt to floating just above the lava. If anyone wants to take them there I'd suggest looking up the adaptations that real extremophiles possess.
>>
>>20387803
Sure thing, but this next thread might be a new region (I'm thinking... Jungle?), as the other regions got one area each.

Regions available:
jungle of alpha
highlands of alpha
abyssal trench
desert of beta

>>
>>20389911
After this one 404's. I'll post the link up on the foolz archive version (you can find it on the wiki page i linked to earlier in the thread).

In the future, I announce stuff on the wiki, in case I cannot do so through a new thread or it would be silly to do so. Just keep that in mind.

I also post the foolz links here as soon as the new thread starts, so if you've been gone a bit, or I take a break, here is where you look to see if I've returned yet (or whatever) without having to go through the pages of /tg/.
>>
I'd love to do some evolving, but first I need a computer which doesn't insist on crashing all the time. I'll have to see if the image limit's been reached by tomorrow morning.
>>
Bumping. You guys can still evolve, right up until the end, you realize this? Besides, probalby won't get to the new thread until *at least* tomorrow.

Plygmoids living on the higher slopes of the volcano find food scarce, and continue to decrease in size and length to conserve energy.
Their limbs lengthen and develop points to help them keep their footing on steeper slopes of the volcano, and also increases their potential speed.

Despite their inhospitable environment, these "Scittermies" are great in number, and tend to live in swarms, each consisting of dozens of Scittermies.

Scittermies will survive on anything and everything they find in their harsh environment, from the occasional Hairb that manages to sprout so far away from the base of the volcano, or (in exceptionally rare cases), will scavenge from the corpse of a creature who has wandered far from home, and met it's demise in the area. In desperate times, Scittermies will try to gain nutrients through eating ash.
