>New players very welcome as always
You are Dave Davesson. 27-year old former archaeology grad student, now one-armed, eyeless, insanity-stricken apprentice of an emotionally dead, possibly ageless master of time and space; thrust into a war you don’t understand against foes you can’t comprehend; it’s up to you to try and… not be another casualty, really.

On your side are the Magi – a nebulous group of extremely rare magic users. Another of their ranks is Sam, your younger brother, a student of your (former) master, Gyatso. He is currently capable of defeating entire armies by himself, while you’re limited to rudimentary scrying and, with great risk to your personal well-being, teleportation.

Your enemies? The 72. Demons, apparently. You’ve already defea-, encountered the first two. The first one, Andromalius, sealed you within a magical metal, while the second, Dantalion, raped your mind and then replaced your eyes with said metal.

Currently, you’re on a rescue mission in the Void, the nihility between realities. Your objective is simple: find and retrieve the members of Azrayil, an elite group of… you’re not actually sure. All you know is they used to be students under your current mentor, Kaoru.
And that if you don’t get them out before Seere - the 70th of the 72 - gets to them, they’ll most likely end up as demon kibbles.

In short, your life sucks.

I’m back for more cryptic nonsense (if anyone’s up for it).
New players are, as always, extremely welcome. I’d be happy to sum up anything you might be wondering about (unless it’s obtuse by design), although I do recommend that you read the archives.
Since you’re a Void mage, metagaming is encouraged, as is discussion, and remember: lethality is at a high level. The loss of your arm, eyes and sanity (well, most of it) was completely unplanned for, and yes, you can easily end up dead. In fact, the Void school of magic is basically engineered for hilariously fatal accidents.
Please sage all suggestions, since a bunch of guys have been complaining about quests taking up the front page, and we all have to co-exist. Seeing as they’re irrational (and blatantly wrong), we might as well compromise, since they can’t see reason, and no one likes shitty metathreads.

>SO
Quick summation:
Seere, the 70th of the 72 is on his way. Kaoru’s holding him back for now, until you can save Anton, master of Death magic, as well as the 20 Void magi who make up Azrayil. You have been told to try and get to Gyatso’s temple in Tibet, where Kaoru will bring in Seere once you’re done. Thus far, you’ve saved three, but each saved Void magi also saves another while you’re inside one of the dreamscapes, so you’re up to 7 of the Void Magi now, plus yourself.
You’re about to enter the fourth passage (I saved the response from the last thread). Your call sign is Blackbeard.
So, feed the mage? Y/N?

Okay, we're at 8 Void Magic currently, so we've got two more sweeps to do.

Have everyone take their personal door and try to get another Void Magi out of the illusion. That'll bring us to 16, once we have that we'll have 8 of them pair up and get the remaining 4 Magi and 8 of us go after Anton.

>you just had to say yes

“There are some things that cannot be forgiven, trying to destroy the world is among them.

I can forgive a lot, I probably should forgive my brother, he's done nothing wrong to me.

But I will still not relent, there are things that I cannot forgive and thus I must take revenge upon them. To relent would be to fail myself and the world.”
Something about this situation fills you with vigor.
Here you stand, defiant against forces that possess the potential to end the world.
Here you stand, relentless.
Your answer to this barrier between you and your goal is resolute. Unwaveringly, you’ve spoken nothing but the truth.
For once in your life, you’re content.
Content to let vengeance be your guide. Blinded by hatred. Unthinking aggression. Lone thought in your mind, destruction.
As long as you succeed, you don’t care.
The Void shifts, the door before you disappearing. It gives way not to a passage as you expected, but to the emptiness of the Void.
You fall through the ground that swallows you whole, the insanity of your situation dampened by the simple fact that you’re in the Void.
The Void.
You don’t even know if what you’re thinking, what you’re feeling, what you’re saying, whether it’s truly you. You would never be so steadfast nor so definite in anything were this not the Void. So is it what you truly mean? Or is it the truth, no longer bound by your projected perspective of self?
No time for introspection. There are people to save.

Falling through the fourth passage, you land upon a grisly scene of carnage. Bodies paint the ground as a work of art, the message unclear, the medium; death. Blood flowing freely, the burgundy liquid gives off a rosy scent which intermingles with the warmth of the flames all around you.
Someone’s been busy.
You hear the sound of bloody gurgling, the cacophony of fire licking flesh, the owners of which scream in agony. You hear an explosion, followed by gunfire. The dead rise, running in reverse. Your mind turns back towards the past, substituting what is for what once was. Effect before cause, in an eminent show of splendorous destruction.
Time crawls back as each body armor-clad corpse grabs a rifle, and in many cases, their dismembered body parts. The room is emptied of people as they run backwards through the corridor from which they came, and you move on to find out where the next agent is.
You hear two gunshots, clear as day, directly above you. Quickly, you run up the stairs, seeing several men and women in full body armor running backwards down it.

As the clocks on the walls in the hallway through which you move tick backwards in an eerie defiance of time itself, you hear loud yelling from within the room at the room at the end.
“Give up, Arthur! You’re surro-“

A man of few words.

Arthur, I'm on your side and I'm getting you out of here. This isn't real, we can not turn back time like this. All we can do is do better next time.

Take my hand, and please don't shoot me in the head. I'm going to take you back to the rest of the Void Magi, we're all in this together and we're breaking out of this illusory cage.

He's silent for a while, looking at you from behind his shades, guns leveled at your head the entire time.

Bang.
Bang.
Bang.

His shots pass right through you, and you see his first emotion. A dissatisfied frown.

"I know what this is, kid. You're interrupting me."

He holsters one of his guns before waving you over to where he's standing.

Yeah, it's the Void, none of this is real, a Demon has us trapped. As much as you may feel you need to do this it isn't as important as getting us out of here so we can deal with the real threats.

Head on over to where he's standing.

"Shh. Shhhh.
Shut the fuck up.
I already said I know what this is. I know what I'm doing. I've already done it about 57 times by now. It only gets better each time."

You stand there for a while, not sure what to think.
Instead of wasting time, you hurriedly decide to simply comply and walk over to where Dirac's standing, pulling out some device from his pocket.

You instinctively drop to your knees, trying to regain your balance as the entire building itself shakes from the force of multiple explosions going off everywhere in the building complex, windows exploding behind Arthur as he stands, arms raised to the now clearly visible sky. The shattered glass falls, sound of clinking barely audible over the display of demolitions in the floors beneath you.

The walls are the first to disappear, as the Void overtakes the illusion. You grab onto Arthur so as to regain your composure and balance on the now single spot of existence that remains.

"I always hate it when the crescendo cuts off before the climax. Let's go, kid. I trust you know where?"

You look at the man before you, and can't help but notice how he's the only one whose history hasn't revealed itself to you.

You push aside these thoughts as you make your way back to where the others should be.

You see 14 others, besides you and Arthur, quite clearly. It seems they've all been successful in their extractions as well.

"Blackbeard."

Maha walks over to you and nods at Dirac, who returns the gesture with a shrug and walks over to the main group.

"Sparrow. Good to see you. Only four left, right?"

"Yeah. Our most senior agent is one of them. Jackie D. Holiday. Which brings me to another thing: one of our agents has 'forgotten' his call sign. I've verified all the others personally."

You look at Maha who subtly nods her head in the direction of the man you recognize as Pumpkin. The guy who bitched at you for suggesting a course of action.

"Normally we would defer to Jackie D., but seeing as he's not here, and you've had personal orders from Kaoru himself to lead this op, we're going to need-"

"I DON'T REMEMBER MY CALL SIGN 'CAUSE IT WAS SOME GAY ASS SHIT, HADER. FUCK! I swear, if Jackie D. were here, I'd"

Pumpkin's outburst is cut short as Paine sweeps his legs off the ground.

"Disobeying senior agents again? You know how the NPU deals with insubordinate agents."

Pumpkin quickly shuts the hell up, for which you're thankful.

In the distance, you eye what you clearly recognize as the fifth passage. Anton's nowhere to be seen, however.

There are many matters with which to deal.

Pumpkin looks absolutely horrified, but that's probably because of the smile that now looks like a permanent fixture on Paine's face. Apparently, he's been pissing her off for a good while.

Maha looks very discomforted as Paine lifts her boot from the ground.
"Jesus fuck! I- I seriously don't-"
Paine's foot snaps towards him
"PUMPKIN! PUMPKIN! IT'S FUCKING PUMPKIN FOR FUCK'S SAKE!"
Paine's boot stops inches from his face.

You're about to make your way to the fifth door, when Maha suddenly grabs onto your arm.

"Dave, just how much do you actually know about the demons?"

She's definitely suspecting that you know something.

Damn. You're beginning to sound like the other Magi.

Putting aside that rather unpleasant sensation of becoming what has enraged you the most, you wrest your arm free from Maha's grasp.

There will be time for talk later, you think.

You walk through the door where you'll find the last man you'll need before you can head out for Anton. As usual, nothing is as easy as it seems.

Quickly, the entire world around you dissolves. The people, the stars above, the sand underneath your feet, they all disappear and give way to another question. It is not like reading at all, rather, it fills your very being with an implicit understanding of what is written

“Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding. It is the bitter potion by which your inner physician heals your sick self.

You notice you've been walking through the darkness, the question burnt into your mind for far longer than the others. Your answer, however, clears up the tunnel and you find yourself standing in a desert.

About a hundred meters to your right is some sort of industrial complex. Even in the dead of night you can see seven heavily armed figures moving between the warehouses.

Jackie D. Holiday. Commanding officer of Operation: Pastor.
His team had been effectively black boxed. All they knew was they needed to extract a tripled source whose cover had potentially been blown. As in, a triple agent. Effectively, the Op For thought he was their double agent.
Of course, Jackie D., being black boxed by central command, had no way of knowing that the source had actually been quadrupled.

This didn't mean his team had to die. Their op was FUBAR, but they could've survived.
All Jackie D. would've had to do was disobey his orders and get the hell out of dodge when they opened fire.
>>
A born leader, a man like Holiday doesn't endanger the mission.

Now he's got six dead teammates and a severe alcoholism problem.

He asks for another beer from the barkeep, and looks at you. Your bar stool is uncomfortable, but not as uncomfortable as his gaze.

"About time you showed up. I'm ready to get out of here. Show me the way."

You can't help but feel there's something in the story that doesn't make sense. Something that seems intuitively... wrong.
Like there's a giant blank in his reality.

"None of your goddamned business. How the hell do you know about that?"

I know you pushed ahead on a doomed mission and I know your team died. I know the objective was extracting an informant who turned out to be a prick."

Jackie D. calms down quickly and throws away the destroyed bottle.

"Sorry 'bout that. Thought you might've been one of the 72's cronies. Not much more to tell, really."
He seems to have calmed down. You think you know why.

"It was some weird Void illusion shit. The illusion was a lie, tell me the truth."

Yeah, he's definitely not calm any more.

"The past's the past. I don't dwell on what happened. I extracted him, delivered him to command, and they executed him and gave me a commendation. What happened between that isn't important. So long as the mission is successful, my personal feelings about the matter are irrelevant.

Now, can we get out of here? This beer tastes like watered down camel piss. And I would know."

He chuckles a bit, very obviously insincerely.
He might be a good officer, but he's a shit liar.

Regardless, he might have a point. Seere can't be held back by Kaoru for much longer, you'd wager.

You're standing before Azrayil again, and its members cheer at the sight of their most senior agent.

"Right, people. We've got work to do. Let's get the hell out of here before shit goes down."

"Anton's still here, somewhere", Maha protests.

"Alright. Dan's the name, right?"

"Dave."

How the hell can Dave be a hard name to remember?

"What? That's bullshit, man! Bullsh-"
This time, it's you who makes him shut up with naught but a glare.
You've quickly assumed control of the situation.
It feels good, for some reason.

You look inward, and suddenly realize you can't see any more.
You can't feel your arm any more.

Everyone around you starts screaming.

"What the fuck what the fuck what the fuck?", Pumpkin says before Maha quickly opens a rift in the Void to allow him to escape, almost getting through herself as well.

"Wait! The eyes are Kaoru's doing. Well, partly at least. I've basically got the same Void eye deal going as Kaoru."

"..and your arm?"

"Wolf."

Almost every single one of the Azrayil agents cocks their head.

"I don't want to talk about it."

You quickly use the fact that your true self is now material in the Void to search it for signs of Anton.

This being the Void, the mere act of searching is enough.

There he is in front of you, and all the other Void Magi.
Lying on the ground.
Unmoving.
Unbreathing.
Gaunt.
Pale.
"No! NO! FUCK! FUCK! THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING!", Maha screams.

"Calm down. He's dead, Maha."
Holiday's words aren't exactly reassuring.

"I've seen this before", he continues: "It happened when a Death magi sent an animated body through a Void rip on its own. It couldn't sustain itself, so it fell down lifeless."

"I don't think you're understanding, you daft cunt.
He's.
Fucking.
Dead.

It might just be that a Demon got to him first and ate his soul. That is probably more plausible.

But if this is what I saw back then, it means he was dead before he even went into the Void.
Someone had to have animated him.

No, that's ludicrous, it has to be the demon.

But how the hell does any demon take down a Tutor?"

His eyes suddenly flick open as he realizes he's said far more than he should have.

He calms down a bit, saying: "If he's been eaten by a Demon, I have no idea what to do.
If it's the other thing, the Death Magi who did this originally would be able to do it again.

Still, there's no chance Anton's been reanimated. He's the Tu-.
He's been the same ever since I met him a decade or so ago. There's been no significant change at all.

Look, you're the one who's been talking to Kaoru. What do we need to do now?"

"Welp, grab the stiff and lets get out of here. Honestly, a tutor being reincarnated by his own master? The tutor of necromancy? Yeah, that sounds so HORRIBLY UNLIKELY. I mean, it's not like he ever had a teacher or anything."

You calmly walk through the rip in the Void, only to realize the Void is a part of you now. Entering and exiting the Void is second nature to you now, and you don't actually need the portal. Still, it is a better statement, and the Void Magi all follow through with you. Although you can feel some of them are repressing the urge to laugh at what you said.
You're not sure why.

You exit, seeing the good ol' temple in Tibet. Same mountain where you lost your arm.

You really hope you don't run into any stray wolves.

Kaoru's standing on the steps outside the temple, Gyatso and Sam behind him.
Sam happily waves at you, while Gyatso derisively sneers.

The Void Magi all exit through alongside you, Anton carried on one of their backs.

That's when he appears.

Seere.

In his own way, he's beautiful. Mounted upon a winged steed, spear in his hand.

He looks vaguely humanoid.

"NOW! DAVE! USE THE SEAL!"

HOLY FUCKING SHIT DID KAORU JUST YELL?

If Kaoru says use the seal we use the damn seal. He knows what he's talking about, at least more than anyone else here.
>>
>>20381465
>HAHAHAHA that's not enough

Fumbling around with your hands, not understanding at all how the hell he intends you to use a seal which you've only seen once, and you have no idea how actually works, you look as Seere... runs away?

In the blink of an eye, he's gone away, carried by his steed.

Everywhere, there is silence.

There's a Demon loose on Earth.

>What do, Dave?

>>
>>20381497
Well fucknuggets.

First see how dead on a scale of 1-10 Anton is, probably 10.

Confer with Kaoru to work out our next move. We'd like to get Anton back in the world of the living if possible, maybe another Necromancer could do that. We also need to track down Seere, but given that we have a cadre of Void Mages, the information specialists of the Mages we ought to be able to do that.

Also ask Kaoru how using the seals works exactly.
>>
>>20381552
>When you rematerialize on Earth, do so at Gyatso’s temple. We’ll need Sam to seal away Seere.
Teleporting after him on our own is just going to get us killed. Especially with rolls like that.

Seal him.

"Uh..."
Kaoru puts his palm to his face, obviously exasperated.

"I didn't expect it to work, to be completely honest. Still, it was better than nothing."

He looks at Azrayil, and he looks positively furious, as you can clearly see from his... mildly wrinkled forehead and widely opened eyes.

"What.
Happened."

"Kaoru, we, uh, we're sorry. We don't know."

"What. Happened."

"We found him like this in the Void. We think he might've been reanimated."

"Anton hasn't ever been reanimated. I've seen every second of his life. There is no possibility that a Tutor's doings would've escaped my sight. Neither could he have been killed, or reanimated. Seere didn't get to him either. This is wrong, this is all wrong."
Kaoru almost loses his composure, but calms down.

He sits down and seems to think.

While the others talk, you decide your mastery of the Void is sufficient to negate the physical distance between you and Seere. You remember how Dantalion was sealed. He carved his seal into your chest.
Maybe you just need to..?

You put your hand to your chest, teleporting fragments of your skin away, creating the pattern you recognize as Seere's seal.

The pain is almost unbearable, but your time with Kaoru has taught you to ignore it.
No one seems to notice as your flesh peels away underneath your clothes, your one empty sleeve flapping in the wind.

It doesn't seem to do much, however. At least not yet.

>What, exactly, do you want to ask?
>>

"Now, the seal Kaoru. Tell me what it does so that I can put that coward back into hell"

"Silence, Dave. I must think. There are things more important than the 72."

Given that you know for a fact that they can destroy the entirety of the human race, you have a hard time believing that. Then again, it's Kaoru. He's not exactly known for lying.

Azrayil still seems baffled that he's even there. They seem to be treating his very presence as inconceivable.

You decide to let Kaoru think for a moment while you reconcile with your brother.
It's impossible to shake off that feeling of inferiority, but damn it, he's your brother. It's not his fault that everyone treats him like the second coming of Christ.

Gyatso sneers as Sam runs over to you and you, with your one arm embracing him, as he almost crushes you under the force of his own hug. Damn, he's been hard at work.

"Sorry! Sorry! Sorry! Sorry! I'm so sorry big bro, I'm just still not used to all this."

Yeah.
That makes two of you.
You seem to spy a smile from Kaoru.
At least you hope that's a smile.
"I've got it.
Sam, you are to be assigned to Izrafael."
This time, Gyatso doesn't back down.
"He's my disciple. He will remain with me."
"No.
He won't.
We must work together, Gyatso."

"Hey little bro, you been enjoying your training? Guess it's a bit more engaging than playing vidya and going to school, yeah?"

Sam seems to ignore you.
He's look intently at Gyatso and Kaoru. The two of them seem close to out-and-out fighting.

"Look, Gyatso. I know you hold my brother, your apprentice, rather close. But currently we have bigger issues than us bickering with each other. If the place my brother is needed to help against the threat against the existence of humanity is away from you you're going to have to let him go."

Gyatso turns his head towards you and then, you see that smile again.
You almost instinctively duck, but restrain yourself. He's not going to hit you while both Sam and Kaoru are here.

"Fine. Sam is to report back here every day for training, and follow the code despite residing with Izrafael."
"Those terms are agreeable."
"Furthermore, your disciple is to reside with Azrayil."
Kaoru grimaces at the thought. What's he got against you being with Azrayil? Just what, exactly, are they talking about?

Kaoru nods before disappearing in thin air. Probably to inform Izrafael, although it's impossible to know for certain. He can hear everything you say despite not being physically present, though, so it shouldn't be a big problem anyway.

You give Sam a noogie, like you used to before your parents screamed at you for beign mean to him

Just like old days, huh.

Sam playfully punches you, just like he also used to, except his playful punches have now become so powerful, you fall to the ground, deprived of air.

"Shit! Are you okay, bro?"

"I'm... fine..."
Damn it.

"I...guess you're going to live with those Izrafael people, huh?"

"Yeah, I guess I am."

He smiles at you, before helping you up.

"So, Kaoru. I thought you only managed your branch of Void magi. What kind of organizing do you do with the magi of the other schools?"

"Azrayil will explain."

Laconic as always.

Azrayil still seems stunned, but they regain their composure.

"We can take you to our HQ, Dave. We can drop off Sam at Nexus", Maha says.
You don't think they realize just how little you actually know about their operations.

You try to look at Anton's corpse through the lens of the Void.

It seems to work perfectly! You can clearly see him getting up from the ground, although you're not certain he used to be twenty feet tall.
Or be created from the stuff of nightmares.

Each limb a writhing, contracting and expanding mass of black flesh, dripping its corrupt blood upon the ground.
The sins of the dead haunt them, as they rise from the ground, chanting at the now completely changed shape that was once man, but is now nothing more than a protoplasmic mass of wrongness.
The souls of the deceased join together, forming cysts, overflowing with pus, calling to you.

Dave.

Dave.

Dave.

Dave.

Witnessing its splendorous defecation upon the very concept of sanity is enriching. Like a small needle, slowly put through your eyeballs.

Slowly, pushing ever so gently, yet wriggling every millimeter of the way, so as to assure you that yes, within your eye is a cold, pointy piece of metal.

You're slapped by Sam and regain your composure. Anton's still lying on the ground.
Another of your hallucinations. This time, you almost jumped off the cliff side in delirium.

Especially Sam.
"Dave, you almost jumped off the mountain. What the hell has happened to you?"
You're not sure how to break the news that you've been irrevocably mentally invaded by a demon beyond the confines of this reality.

So you don't.

"That's... classified. We'll... tell you when we get to HQ", Holiday says.
The only one who seems totally indifferent is Arthur. Everyone else looks just as out of it as you probably do.

He's intelligent, smarter than a lot of people but was never going to be anything really special. Never going to be written down in the history books and remembered.

I very much doubt that starting completely over will get us further along to not being someones bitch. Apprentices are bitches until they graduate to full mage, deal with it.

Woah.

This is a big place.

The austere HQ of Azrayil isn't empty as you'd have expected, since almost all the Void Magi are with you.
You notice that Sam isn't with you.

Holiday seems to notice your concern:
"Sam's in the Nexus. It's basically the meeting place for the four Archangels. We're on of the Archangels, the R-team is another. That's Izrafael, if you were wondering."

You return to admiring the technological wonder before you. You notice the auras of the people in front of the screen are mixed. There are obviously Magi of every kind here. You count 11 in total who aren't Void Magi.

Over the screen, you see the words: "Praemonitus, Praemunitus" inscribed.
Great, pretentious Latin. As if you hadn't had enough of that when you studied.

"We could take you to Nexus, but we figured you might want to know where you're going to spend the majority of the next few months. We probably owe you a few answers. I'm afraid I can't tell you much though. Information is on a strictly need-to-know basis."

"He needs to know", the familiar monotone sound of Kaoru's voice expressly informs Holiday.

"Alright, I guess we can actually tell you everything we know, despite the fact that we've kept it secret since our inception."

He groans, palming his face.

"There are some things only Kaoru knows, though. You'll have to ask him", he says, muffled behind his hand.

He straightens up, takes a deep breath and prepares to inform you of everything as you adjust your new shades.
>>
>That's your cue, by the way.
>Any OOC questions you've got are welcome too, although IC would be better.
>>
>>20382239
Repeat these questions.

We have finally moved up the hierarchy to senior bitch.
>>
>>20383181
Forewarned, Forearmed. Makes sense. What? I used to do archaeology, of course I can translate some Latin.

Okay, so we've got the four Archangel teams. Are these all comprised primarily of Void Mages or is there a different mixture? What are the teams named?

Where is HQ?

What do we have in resources both manpower, magical artifacts if there are any, political clout, and mundane resources and weapons?

What is the hierarchy here, I know Kaoru is on top but what's the chain of command?

What do we have in terms of facilities here?
>>
>>20383181
What exactly are the 72?
>>
"Forewarned, Forearmed. Makes sense. What? I used to do archaeology, of course I can translate some Latin.

Okay, so we've got the four Archangel teams. Are these all comprised primarily of Void Mages or is there a different mixture? What are the teams named?"

"The four Archangel teams are Izrafael, the R-team, Jibrail, the G-team, Mikail, the M-team, and Azrayil, the A-team. Each one deals with a specific Tutor.
We're the ones who cooperate with the Death Tutor. Well, we did, before Anton upped and died and revealed himself to not be the Death Tutor. Which is exceedingly strange, but I digress.
Izrafael deals with the Inner Tutor, in case you were wondering"

"Where's the HQ?"

He looks annoyed.
"Look out the window. We're in semisynchronous orbit."
Wait, that's a window, not a screen? Holy shit.

"What do we have in resources both manpower, magical artifacts if there are any, political clout, and mundane resources and weapons?"

He mulls over the question a bit, clearly not certain how to answer.

"Well, manpower wise, the NPU, which is the organization including non-Archangel cells, as well as the Archangel teams, consists of 495 Magi. There are no magical artifacts to the knowledge of any currently living agent, but we are the conspiracy. We are the New World Order. We have sleepers inside almost every government, although they are, as the name would imply, inactive. Tech-wise, we're beyond any standing army in the entire world. We've never needed it before, though."
>>
"What is the hierarchy here, I know Kaoru is on top but what's the chain of command?"
"Kaoru's not a part of the NPU."
Well, that's a surprise.

"The NPU consists of every surviving Void MagI in the world, as well as a few select non-Void Magi. We manage ourselves entirely. Kaoru established the NPU half a millenium ago, I think, I'm not sure. You'd have to ask one of our historians. We've been preparing ever since. There is no chain of command, in all honesty. Kaoru's a disciplinary threat more than a leader. He's absent most of the time, though we've all trained under him, individually.

The Archangel teams coordinate four cells each. Each cell is independent from the other, and only the Archangel teams link them together. The Archangel teams never communicate with one another unless extreme circumstances warrant it, and we don't know each others' location. This is why we use the Nexus for meetings between us."

"What do we have in terms of facilities here?"

"Pretty much everything you could ever need, really."

There's one question that's been bugging you ever since you started this ridiculous journey.
"Just what exactly ARE the 72?"

"..fucked if I know."

>I'm bad at exposition. Follow up questions to any answers are probably a good idea.
>>
>>20383329
Guess that ones one to save for Kaoru then, we should also ask Kaoru about the discrepancy between his 72 and Gyotso's 76.
>>
>>20383374
78, actually.

No follow up questions, however?
>>
>>20383329
Understandable about the 72, I think Kaoru is the only one who knows much of anything.

So we're in space, I thought we dealt with the other type of void. I like it, it's funny.

What does NPU stand for?
>>
>>20383380
"You've been preparing for a war for 500 years with 72 beings that are beyond human conception based on the words of a single person?"
>>
>>20383423
Also, can I get something to eat, and a brain fixerupper?
>>
What have the magi been doing for all these years? Anton told me that the governments around the world don’t quite have a grasp of ‘recent events’ as we do. And every day since I’ve been initiated, I’ve been traveling with the knowledge of a world that the rest of humanity doesn’t have.

You amuse yourself with the thought of how you're now in a void, without actually being in the Void.
Another thing is that your aviators suddenly got relevant to your position.

You can't help but wonder why Gyatso said there were 78, and no one knows what the 72 are, but that's a question for Kaoru. He's probably the only one who knows.

"What does NPU stand for?" you ask.
"Ne Plus Ultra. Literally, it means 'Not More Beyond'. We are the pinnacle of human existence, the one and only line against the 72.
Also, for some reason, people like pretentious Latin."

Can't argue with that logic.

"So, you've been preparing for a war for 500 years with 72 beings that are beyond human conception based on the words of a single person? Also, can I get something to eat and a brain fixerupper?"

"A single person who's able to control the very fabric of reality with nothing but the fact that he wants to, who's lived before recorded history. Yes.
Almost every member of the NPU was picked up at a bad time in their life. Hell, even you were. You followed without question.

Doesn't take much when there isn't much left.

If that'll be all, you should be able to get some food in the cafeteria. We've got some Mental Magi around who should be able to help you with that problem of yours."

Suddenly, a beeping noise permeates the room.

"Holiday, I think you'd like to see this. We've got a rebellion on hand. 49 confirmed Magi casualties, 104 MIA. Estimated 2400 defectors."

Oh
Hell.
No.
>>
>>20383493
Well fuck. They had to have a rebellion right when I was going to get a sandwich and lay down on a soft couch.

Kaoru, we seem to have a situation. Any advice on how to deal with this?
>>
And this concludes Mage War Quest Part 6.

Hope you liked it. It's 2 PM here and I haven't slept yet, so yeah. Kinda tired.

Any and all criticism is welcome. No, fuck that shit, criticism is specifically requested.

Whatever we do, we must get a sammich, I don't think Dave has eaten since he got stuck in the metal.
>>
>>20383493
"But why would that many magi defect? Could Seere be the one controlling them? Damn it, I knew I should have gone after him, I had the seal on my chest"

Who told you cliffhangers are a good thing
Whoever did that should be hanged
