Realizing that their defenses were practically non-existant the machine men worked to fortify their position, starting with the entrance to the small cave. They hauled bricks and mortar up to the entrance and built a proper entrance, small enough so that it would only let one machine man enter/exit the cave at any single moment. Next they cut away at the walls to make them uniform, then they covered the walls, ceiling, and floor with the bricks, creating a comfortable and uniform cave. The small amount of water that runs through to the machine mother is runoff from melting snow , and is completely unaccessable to the machine men. Along the mountain the machine men create small brick outposts on the main path up the mountain, in case of an asault they could man these outposts and defend them easier.

A machine man is sent down to the river village to inquire about the good river, whether it is a god of some sort or magical. The new leader takes care of your question,
"The good river, a god? Hmm, I don't know to be honest, we take care of the good river, keep it clean, in return it gives us fish and clean water, keeps the monsters out, what else do you need to know?"
The machine man asks if it might be possible for some of the water to be taken to the machine mother to be used as special water.
"Taking the water? Well, you can try, but I don't know what will happen."
The machine man borrow a leather flask from the villagers and fills it with water, but when he tries to leave the valley the flask bursts and the water quickly flows back into the river, almost as if it was bound to it.

Luckily it's programmed into the brain cores of the machine men to always recover their fallen for re-working, repair, or smelting. The machine men could only recover eight machine men worth of damaged parts, the rest were too damaged to be of any use at all. The machine men study their fallen brethrens' anatomy. They discover many things, apparently power is stored in some sort of energy core located at the machine mans inner chest, everything has a wire that leads to the power core, and it's these wires that transfer the power to make gears and pistons move, allowing the machine men to work. A few of the wires lead up to the machine mens head, inside the head there is a brain core which holds memories, knowledge, and intelligence. Other than that there is hundreds upon hundreds of gears, pistons, strings and bits of meatal that somehow make everything work, more research will be required to further understand the machine man body.
>>
>>20392493
The storm has ended! And the machine men have weathered it with only a few losses. The machine men ask the humans about the brutes, they reply that the machine men shouldn't have worried about them, that the good river would've protected them. They refuse the idea of constructing a wall, deeming it foolish for the good river IS their wall. Some of the brute bodies are recovered, though they are on the verge of rotting. Supposedly as long as some wires are connected to a brain core and a power core anything will have intelligence, the workers try to study the brutes' body before the experiment, their heart is absolutely huge, it must pump gallons of blood to the things' body, allowing for it's super strength. Besides that there isn't anything special to note of. The machine men surgically insert a brain core into one of the brutes head, and a power core into the brutes chest. They attach some wires back and forth to the power core, then to the eyes, ears, heart, and other organs and limbs. Surprisngly the brute jumps up back to life, the machine men close the wounds with bandages and set the machine brute to work. They examine him carefully, testing him to see his affectiveness. He works relatively well, but he can't recieve power unless he has a power port, which is built in to all machine men. They had thought of attaching one to him but if they did his organs would just spill out. The body quickly rots after a few days, the rest of the bodies are burried for cleanliness.
>>
>>20392499
It is realized that anything can be given the intelligence of a machine man if a brain core and power core is surgically implanted, but then how did the tinkermen have intelligence? That, the machine men did not know.

The machine men ask the machine mother how to replenish their losses, she tell them that they can repair the dead if they can figure out how, but her memorey fails her...She recalls something about data cores, perhaps if they could find data cores and feed them to her then maybe she would remember more. Sadly she has no idea where data cores might be. When asked about where they might find more unawakened machine men she states that if we exist then that must mean more of us exist somewhere in this world. Maybe even another machine mother like herself!

The machine men start experimenting with various ways of gathering energy from the river better, they themselves can't imrprove their inner turbines, but perhaps they can construct some sort of turbine with their orange metal. They start forging a large copper turbine, they find that they can use their fists as crude hammers. In the end it's a very primitive turbine, but it'll work. Now they just need to build a proper structure to hold the turbine in the river, and something to transfer the energy to.

Machine men start gathering energy from the river once more. They notice a small bridge being built just a few dozen meters down the river, where the water becomes deep. There appears to also be a few more huts, this can only mean one thing. The village is growing. There is now about fourty villagers instead of thirty, of course a few of them are still children, nevertheless, this can only bode well. The diversion of the river has met up with the base of the home mountain, now to find a way to transport the water.
>>
A small tremor has knocked a large rock from the mountain, it has rolled onto the main road, blocking the path. When machine men try to move it they find that it's too heavy even for them! A large group of machine men need to move it before anyone can access the cave.

During the mining operation the machine men break open into an underground cavern, the darkness feel thick and unnatural, but they enter it, sticking torches to the sides walls to provide light. They find that it's rich with minerals, including the orange copper and some sort of white stone. Inside growls can be heard occasionally. It's quickly revealed that giant spiders live in these caves, they prove to be troublesome but are quelled by the machine men when needed.

Because the machine men lack any proper paper or writing utensils they instead use their robotic minds to develop a schematic for what they call a 'Power generator' they would attach the turbine to a wooden/brick dam and place it in the deep parts of the river, the dam would block off the water and potentially force it into the turbine. But they needed some way to transfer the energy into an energy core. The turbine is connected to a copper shaft that rotates with the turbine, the rotating shaft is then connected to the power generator, which is a mess of copper pieces and wires, (power generator how do they work?!) the generation is not nearly as efficient as having a group of machine men bask in the waters, but with a few more of these the colony will be powered. The generator is connected to wires than protrude from the water and connect to energy cores. The machine men that invented the power generator still donot understand completely how it all works, but they now know the concept of electricity, and realize it powers them.
>>
[D]
The rock must go! Ten machine men try to push the rock off the mountain, but end up dislodging it and having it roll towards them. Luckily 7 of them managed to survive, but the other 3 of them were destroyed beyond repair. The boulder rolled down the main path and destroyed one outpost before rolling off the path.

Mining continues, and the miners gather some of the white metal, the metal is malleable when melted down, but doesn't seem as strong as copper. They also find a black sort of chalky stone, they have no idea what it is, just that it stains their hands. The spiders have grown more agressive, it becomes apparen that there is more than one breed, as new spiders become a threat. These new ones have acidic saliva that they spit, the saliva burn through metal, a few of the miners were destroyed and dragged away by the spiders. The rest escaped and haven't ventured into the depths since. The first specimen of spiders were no trouble, it seemed that their poison was meant for organics, they had orange tinted spots on their backs, these new ones have an almost fluorescent green color to their entire body. They glow faintly in the dark and are far more deadly with their acidic saliva. It is unknown whether if there are more breeds of spiders in the cavern, only that the deeper they go the wider the cavern gets. One such man reported that he got lost in the winding caves and caught a glimpse of a hole in the earth that lead to a great underworld of pure darkness. He heard the screeches and the BEATING OF WINGS. He also heard screams, almost as though there was a group of creatures down there fighting for their life.

The outpost is created inside the cavern, it stands just at the entrance of the cavern to make sure nothing enters or leaves without the guards knowing. The outpost is made of brick and wood. Something must be done about the spiders before anymore mining is done.

The machine men realize that their weapons aren't all that effective against the deadly spiders. They decide that the best thing to do would be invent something can could resist the acidic saliva, thus they take a large flat stone and carve it into what looks like a shield, they cover it with molten copper and attach a wooden handle to it's back, creating a wonderfully versatile shield. The shield is quite heavy for anything other than a machine man, and when compared to any other shield it is much larger.

ADVENTURE MODE START

The entrance of the cave, it was small but daunting none the less, the walls looks picked clean from any minerals, there is a makeshift stair well that leads deeper into the ground, there is a path that leads north and south, the southern tunnel looks smaller. Reports of the spider attacks mostly come from deeper in the ground, though sometimes they happen around the upper levels. 1H looked around closely, nothing, he couldn't hear anything save for the rythymic drips of water from the ceiling. Around him five machine men stood, armed with crude copper spears and stopper shields. He himself was armed with a crude copper sword, a stopper shield, and a crude copper spear on his back. The five men were temporarily under his command, any casualties would embaress himself to the machine mother, and if he should lose all of them he may even be stripped of his name. He realized the seriousness of this task, but in now way would he expect the horrors that layed in wait for him...

1H leads the advance down the stairs, the wood panels creaking all the way down. The darkness peeled away as the group advanced with their torches. They took a look at the second level, nothing. They went further and further down to the bottom of the cavern, where most of the activity was reported. They entered the chamber, this is where most of the minerals resided, and where the spiders were reported. They ventured further into the cavern, and as time passed they began to notice fair sized holes in the rock, spread apart widely, but still frequent. The tunnel opened up into a huge chamber, a tunnen lead to the north, east, and west. This place was uncharted. A faint scittering sound could be heard....From all directions.

"Initiate formation protocall omega zero six zero one zero eight zero one." The machine men form up into a tightly knit wall of shields and slowly back away towards the stair case. From the holes poured out green glowing spiders, and from the northern tunnels poured out the regular orange dotted arachnids. Strangely boths spider types fought each other ferociously, the others focused on killing the machine men, which were holding up well. The shields' copper coating began to melt, but the stone held up much better, however the odd spider or two would slip past the shields and erode away at their legs. 1H saw the other men starting to falter, their brain cores seemed to be programmed to value their lives greatly, they would run away soon. He resolved to override their brain cores' programming with another command, "Keep in formation!" After a little longer they made it to the stair case, they marched up the stairs and waited for the spiders to climb up. As far as they knew this was the only way down, and because of the spiders' low intelligence they would simply march to their doom. The machine men blocked the stair case' entrance and thrusted their spears down into the mob of angry spiders.

The machine men that are still undamaged switch with the damaged ones, they prove to be faster than the damaged. The fight goes on for quite awhile, but soon it is made apparent that the spiders are legion and despite them fighting each other far out number the machine men. Two machine men are killed, their legs give out from being sprayed with so much acid, they are dragged down into the lower floors which are presumably filled with spiders. They donot scream however, nor do they yell for help. They merely state one haunting phrase that all machine men utter before they are destroyed.

"Powering down."

The spiders begin to overwhelm the four remaining machine men, even the stone shields are starting to thin from the acid. 1H switches to his copper sword and begins hacking away at the mob of spiders, this proves to be effective, shards of copper breaking off and piercing the other spiders. The giant spiders are about the size of a mans torso, so they aren't terribly hard to kill. Acid begins to flood down into the lower levels of the cavern from so many dead acid spiders, killing even more of them. The spiders are thinning out however, their numbers are growing smaller with each second, it isn't much comfort however as the spiders seem to continue the assault relentlessly. Nonetheless even 1H is starting to feel the pressure, his left leg is about to fracture, and possibly break. But he feels something, something only an organic could feel...

Wrath.

1H crouches to one knee and lowers his stopper shield to protect his legs, the copper sword breaks in his hands after killing many spiders, he switches to his spear and continues stabbing at the creatures. They do well for a few more seconds, but then 1H takes a glob of acid to the face and falls onto his back, the spiders breach the kill zone and start singling out each machine man. They do their best to hold them off and infact manage to do just that. The spiders flee after another few seconds, but not because they were losing, infact they were winning. The machine man gather around 1H and inspects the damage, his head is damages almost beyond repair, luckily his brain core is still intact, but he can't speak now. 1H drags himself to his feet and picks up his spear and his stopper shield...Something tells the machine men that he is still confident that he will complete the mission. Or maybe he doesn't want to abandon the other two machine men.

A few broken bits and bobs lay about, the machine men reattach them as best they can but they can't do much without the aid of the machine mother, as she can more expertly repair machine men. They continue down the staircase in search of the others, they find a few gears and bronze bits, but nothing else. They stash them away inside their body and move on into the chamber again. Then they hear something, a screeching sound. It sounds like one of the machine men is calling for help, it's coming from the northern tunnel. They start running down the corridor, spears and shields on hand. They emerge from the corridor to enter another chamber, webs cling to the walls now, it's apparent this is their nest. there are three tunnels, one that leads to the north-east, north, and north-west. The cry for help is coming from the north-eastern tunnel. However 1H begins to hear a strange step behind the group, it's similar to the sound of moist skin hitting stone, he turns around to find a strange eyeless creature, it has the body of a human but pointy and narrow ears, it's wearing some sort of garment or armor made from spider hides, it wields what looks like a curved sword made from some beasts sharpened claw. It takes a look at the machine men, and they look back.

"Ahhh! Danunt! Danunt!" The eyeless creature shouts, it starts running down the southern corridor, the one you just came from.

Uh... On on hand there's some bad ass motherfucker running towards the door to our base, on the other hand, we got a machine man in need of help. Have the machine men ever called for help in such dire situations before? If not i think it is a trap and we should return home. but if they have then we should follow the sounds of the machine man. also torch the webs.

1H was not concerned with the strange creature, saving his kin was of higher priority, besides what could the organic do anyways? Call for help? Bah. One of the machine men threw their torch into the webs and it caught on fire and spread everywhere, even spreading it to the webs deeper inside the cave. God knows how much damage it caused in the end, whether it destroyed the entire nest or just a torched a few quarters of it. The machine men started running to the aid of their brother, down the north-eastern tunnel. The run took them about eight minutes, they had to take four different turns to find him, but eventually they did. They emerged out of the tunnel and into a huge nesting chamber, in the far back of the room (a good few hundred feet) there was some sort of massive spider, slowly lumbering about, there were what looked to be egg sacs everywhere, which squirmed and shuffled when exposed to the bright light of the torches. But only when the fire from the previous chamber started igniting the nesting chamber did the spiders start noticing the machine mens' pressence. The entire room lit up in flames.
>>
Luckily this nesting chamber seemed to be of the orange spotted spiders, the acidic ones must be somewhere else. The fire spreads to the sleeping spiders, killing the eggs and the sleeping spiders. It spreads to the queen who lets out something like a cry for help. From he holes in the wall spew out about a hundred and thirty spiders, after the previous massacare this is probably the last of them. Odd though, for the spiders to have attacked the group so hastily, they lost so many of their kind to each other. They must've been starving to death. In the far back, next to the queen you can see two heavily damaged machine men, one perks up it's head and looks at you, it's lighted eyes flickering. It utters one word in the machine language.

"Help."

A normal torch fire isn't strong enough to burn bronze quickly. Instead of charging we should retreat for a minute or 2 and let the fire handle the spiders numbers.

The party realizes that they can't fight all of the spiders, despite most of them wandering into the fires and igniting themselves. They rush to the aid of their brothers while the queen is panicing. They cut the web bindings and carry them on their backs out of the cave, using the torches to keep the spiders at bay. They retreat back from whence they came, the spiders following them the whole way. The eyeless creature has yet to be seen again. They manage to make it to the outpost where the other machine men are ready with their spears, they kill the chasing spiders. In the end they are able to repair the two damaged machine men with some spare parts, leaving them with only 7 men worth of parts. While the two of them still have some dents and scratches, they are otherwise free from all harm.

1H, who stands before the machine mother with literally no face has to have one of his subordinates explain what happened. The machine mother praises 1H for his valiant efforts and orders the others to repair his face. They repair him using very little spare parts, his face however lacks any sort of plating or aesthetics, one can see the many components move about to form speech. 1H couldn't be happier however, being praised by the machine mother is the greatest honor...1H is starting to become an individual because of this praise, and begins to develop a form of sentience, however small. Noone knows of this however, so it cannot be researched or aided. Noone was lost on this day. The eyeless creature is reported, but the machine mother shows no concern.

The miners have yet to return, seeing as how the acidic spiders are still alive. But 1H tells them that they were desperate for food, and must've been eating the other spiders for quite some time, perhaps they will die out.

The spiders begin to expand, eating the other spider queen and her children...

Rolling for acid spiders.
>>
>>20398086
Oh boy.
>>
The acid spiders are legion, they repopulate within a few days, what they are eating is impossible to tell, but their numbers have swelled to unknown measures. Regular hordes of about thirty spiders attack the outpost, trying to spill out upon the open earth. Luckily it would seem that the outpost is defensible against the vermin.

This new metal is revealed to be tin. Both metals seem to have a relatively low strength, but perhaps they would be stronger if they were combined! The machine men melt down the two metals and mix them together, the result is a fairly strong orangey/tan metal known as bronze. The machine men take the left over brain cores and try to wire them together, then attach them to a power core. The result is quite odd, lights flicker within the brain cores back and forth, almost as if they're communicating. But nothing can be done unless they are given a body.

The villagers elect a new leader, his name be Farl. The villagers have discovered stone working, herbalism, and gravel roads. Their houses are now made with stone walls, wooden floors and ceilings and roofs. They also now have medicinal powders used for various things, and gravel roads that make travelling around the village easy. In addition they have ditched their fur clothes for leather clothing, it's not as warm but they fine it to be much more refined and comfortable. Their language has also developed.
