You are a Magical Girl, and you find yourself hunting bears in Siberia, a freshly-loaded M91/30 Mosin Nagant rattling on its strap slung on your shoulder as you do your best to tread snow with somewhat ill-fitting boots.
You'd been having so much trouble with your heels that Kharn finally took pity on you, and gave you the pair she'd been meaning to hand to you but suspiciously forgot.

"Maybe your amnesia is contagious, Murderface," she had said, laughter in her voice after she sees you eat it for the fourth time - your reward for trying to tread the rather unforgiving terrain consisting of hard-packed snow, suddenly ankle-deep snow, and slippery ice. "Perhaps I am catching it, and I am forgetting things! Hahaha!"

For someone whose career - and life - you ruined, and forgot all about it because of your amnesia, Kharn is being a real sport about it. You're not sure why, but hell, you'll take your blessings where you can get them.

You'll just have to ignore the sinking feeling in your stomach that you'll be looking back at this moment with regret, someday.
>>
>>20506252

With the boots, the long trek to the hunting grounds that Kharn promised didn't seem all that long, after all. The massive truck on treads was slow enough that you had opted to tackle the trip on foot; something your former partner seemed more than happy to join you in. Tiny Pete, Misaka's little experiment and your current best spiky buddy, brings up the rear, leaving massive imprints with every lumbering step.

Walking side by side with Kharn, a good solid rifle in your hands and nothing to wait for but tomorrow - it's a quite refreshing experience, revitalizing almost. Perhaps this is why vacations to remote parts of the world are so popular these days - to really relax, to really disconnect from stress is to be placed in a radically-different environment; totally alien from your usual trappings. Not that you'd recommend a trip to Siberia to hunt bears for anybody else, but for someone like you, this seems to be what just the doctor ordered.

You're not even jonesing for the booze as much as you were, earlier. Hell, you haven't even lit a single cigarette since this started!

An almost happy sigh leaves your lips; and you breathe in the chilly, bracing air as you continue to follow the large tracked vehicle rumbling in front of you. You probably don't even mind if you don't get to kill a single bear - that would really just be a bonus. Being out here, in a quiet, snow-covered forest...

...You almost feel like you're home.

[1/2]
>>
>>20506261

"It is nice, isn't it?" You hear Kharn say beside you, her armor-plated feet clanking quietly with every stride as she keeps in lockstep. "Despite the obvious danger, the men relish these hunts because it relaxes them as much as it gets their blood up. Hunting is a slow and methodical sport, and there are chances that we end up not sighting a single horde. But we enjoy it all the same."

She turns slightly towards you, and you catch a gleam in her black, crimson-pinned eyes behind her glasses.

"I would recommend that you take this up as a hobby when you get back home, but, ah, there is really no decent place to hunt in Mitakihara, is there?" Kharn smiles. "Well, unless you count our own hunting parties, back then - which, while I recount fondly, were not exactly...officially sanctioned, if I may be allowed to use euphemisms." The word sounds strange with her accent, but it sounds like a strangely erotic term all the same, rolling off her tongue. "You were quite enthusiastic about them, you know. And you have the leading score, still, at that."

You blink at this. It seems that Kharn is sharing something about the past that you don't remember, and while it sounds positive for the most part, the small amount that her smile had faded seems to signify that it wasn't all...peaches and cream, back then.

"Ah, listen to me, reminiscing already." Your former partner lets out a small laugh that sounds the slightest bit forced. "My apologies, Murderface. It is not easy to ignore nostalgia, even when we have not been that long apart. Almost a year is not long enough a time to be misty-eyed about past events, eh?" She grins at you. "Already I am talking like an old woman. Souji says I should not dwell on such things, or I will get wrinkles."

How do you respond?

I've realised something.
In the anime, Homura was never shown drinking and smoking.
I know the drinking and smoking as added as part of the noir theme, but there is one line that got me thinking.

> "But at the very least, you still remember how to slowly self-destruct. That's something the original was very good at."

This could either mean:

1. This is set post anime, living in a world where your friend has become the worlds unsung martyr despite having spent lifetimes trying to save her is a good case for turning to pills, meds and the bottle.

2. We are silly billy's for trying to fit the anime into this.

Some more speculation:

So far, we've been assuming that Homura (before she got kali-mah'd by Faust) was a good guy. However, the diary entries seem to imply that she was, at the very least, paranoid. And from what I can piece together from what other people have said, there is an actual continuity where Homura kills off Madoka for power.

Perhaps we should take what the diary entries say with a grain of salt? Homura may have been a magical girl of a very 'Practical' nature. Pic related.
>>
Having just drunk an appropriate amount of whiskey, this thread is timed perfectly.
>>
>>20506533

No. Homura never killed Madoka for power. The one time she was shown killing Madoka was as a mercy-kill to keep her from turning into a world-ending witch.

That scream as she pulled the trigger was one of the most heart wrenching scenes in the show.

It's quite easy, the PMMM wiki has a chart and it's a 1-to-1 swap all in the same 'font' of the runes. Once you start to pick up the common letters, it rolls along.

For the busy, though, the first line is "What the fuck did you just fucking say to me you little bitch?", which should sound similar to a particularly well-known (and reposted) meltdown...
>>
>>20506554

To be fair, we want to be aiming for a level of paranoia somewhere between Call of Cthulhu and Shadowrun, without actually going full Shadowrun.

Never go full Shadowrun.
>>
>>20506435 >>20506426 >>20506408

Kharn laughs at your comment about the director of the Officio's Research and Development branch, which you've worded with your typical sense of subtlety and tact. "Yes, he does, there is no disagreement between you and me there. But, ah, what will you say if I told you that it is one of his better qualities?"

Her strides, as confident as fluid as always even in the snow, continue to make those strangely-enticing noises - and it's then that you realize how similar they sound to the mechanical action of a firearm's slide being pulled back and being gently released. It's a strange comparison to draw, but there it was.

You shake your head as you digest her response, however. One of his better qualities, she says? Is she keeping track of them, or something?

"...You can say that. I put it to you, you can learn a lot about someone's personality when you spend six months with them in somewhere as remote as this." She gestures with a brutally-clawed hand over the snow-muffled landscape around you. "Working with him has been...an interesting experience. Like desk work. I thought I would never grow accustomed to it, but there it is." Kharn lets out a sigh, her breath leaving her mouth in a small puff of steam in the chilly air.

You idly wonder if you'll turn out the same, too, if in her situation. Kharn's laughter gives it away that you had mistakenly thought aloud.

"You? Desk work? The mere thought of it is inconceivable, Murderface! No, you would probably go insane first!"

"Oh good, at this rate I'll be young forever and ever.

Oh wait, I had that already. I want a refund."
>>
>>20506533

Well, I've also been thinking. It keeps being implied that this state of affairs is our, for at least Homura's, fault.

I think that this occurs post anime where Homura unsatisfied with the world that Madoka's sacrifice found tried a way of undoing it.
She somehow got Godoka to create an alternate universe, however the strain of creating a universe was too much even for Godoka. Since the new universe still had the default:
magical girl -> witch rule
Her soul gem shattered and became the oversized grief seed we know today.

But I still don't really understand how killing Godoka's witch is supposed to help things.

Chiaki doing paperwork. The horror.

She'd burn through a pack of cigarettes and a bottle of kong every stack. Half of the papers would have whisky stains on them and the rest would be smudged with cigarette ash.

That aside I think she'd be brutally efficient at it as long as Mami was nearby with pancakes to keep her from hunting bureaucrats down and kneecapping them at regular intervals.

It is a possibility that Khan's niceness is an act and she resents us for taking her off the field.
You know, we should get a look at her soul gem.
Perhaps when we show her how "to make alcohol go directly into your SOUL" trick
>>
>>20506664

The diary entries say she deserves it. And why would they lie to us?

As much as I like Kharn, my paranoia is telling me that this is going to end in some sort of death gauntlet through the hordes as an act of revenge by Kharn, while our gals are held hostage.
>>
>>20506664
I agree on the trick but I think she might actually not hate us.

That is because I think she is somewhat yandere for us though...
>>
>>20506594

You turn to frown at her, but it's then that she hushes you before pointing towards the clearing to your left with a brutally-clawed finger. You turn to look - and it's there that you see what looks like the skeletal remains of a skier impaled on a tree branch, his bright neon clothing now faded and dulled with drying blood. A broken jawbone hangs lopsidely from underneath a crimson skiing cap, as petrified fingers clasp around the jagged stump of a branch jutting out of the former skier's ribcage.

It's to note that it is missing both its legs, and most of its lower torso.

"One of the victims from last month." Kharn murmurs under her breath as she nudges you to continue walking. "We suspect he was a tourist who flew in here by helicopter, looking for fresh skiing spots. See how he is holding onto that which holds him in place, on the tree? The bears placed him there while he was still alive, and it was then that they started feasting on him."

Well. Not exactly standard bear behavior, but it's not like you've done this before. As far as you can remember, anyway.

"In any case." Kharn clears her throat as the both of you continue your trek, Tiny Pete's plodding footfalls behind you an ever present reminder to keep moving. "Souji can be abrasive, but that is simply because he favors honesty and directness to...a pretense of civility. He says it is much easier if we speak only what we mean to speak to the people we do not wish to get along with, to limit interaction and waste less of each other's time."

Kharn abdicated the Warmaster position when she took Chiaki under her wing. However, QB did mention that she only retired to Siberia after her 6-month partnership with Chiaki ended rather badly. As others speculated, this may have something to do with the late Culexis that seemed to be friends with Kharn and Chiaki. Perhaps it was over something that involved her death?

That makes...sense. A surprising amount. You actually understand where he's coming from--

"But I have also told him that there is no excuse for deliberately being an idiot." Kharn adds, as if an afterthought. "Civility may be bothersome, but it is what separates men from the beasts. Manners."

...Yes, of course. Manners. Those are important, too.

A moment of silence passes between the both of you, and it's then that you ask her another question that pops up unbidden in your mind. Well, not really unbidden, as you've been wanting to ask her about it earlier - ever since you saw her arguing rather heatedly with your arms dealer, who you haven't seen as incensed for quite a while. Not even Kirika's little stunt with her prized Chicago Typewriter then had earned such ire.

"Ah. That." Your former partner lapses into silence, before replying with a slight tinge of crimson in her cheeks. "It...it is a personal thing, Murderface. You are the dearest of all my friends, but I do not think that I am at liberty to discuss it." She smiles, awkwardly, apologetically. "I do not think the parties involved will appreciate it if I get other people involved, as well. So, if possible...I would like to conveniently dodge that question. As honest and forthcoming as your former partner is being, you've noticed that she's being a bit closed with certain topics. Topics that somehow involve both the R&D Facility Director and your arms dealer. Of course, you're not as stupid as to miss the obvious implications between her and Souji, but where does Misaka come in? Perhaps there's some sort of tension between them because of what's between Kharn and her older brother? Is she opposed to the relationship in some way, or just not enamored about the entire idea?

Well, whatever it is, you leave it alone. She did ask, and even you know that there are limits to what you share with your friends. It's not like you don't have anything else to talk about, either.

You glance back up at Kharn, who seems to be fiddling with her rifle - her long, brutish fingers slowly working the bolt back and forth a somewhat disturbing, if entrancing sight. You shake your head briefly, before asking her about her glasses - which, as you've noted, is quite similar to yours.

"Ahaha, these? I was wondering when you would ask!" She reaches up with a clawed hand to nudge her glasses up the bridge of her nose, a curious gesture coming from her. "These are yours, in actuality, Murderface! It is last gift you gave to me, before I left!" She smiles, brightly. "You gave them to me because you thought my eyes, they...attract too much attention. As such, glasses with fancy would make them look friendlier!"

Huh. Well. At least the past you had a lick of sense. And it does work - you're sure that anyone else would shit themselves if they got an eyeful of Kharn's peepers in a dark alleyway. The feminine glasses do blunten the effect - somewhat.

Do people retain limited awareness of what their soul gems experience? That seems to be the case with the whole 'licking incident'.

Maybe we could find out what it's really like inside Homura's shield. I bet it's just the Universes armoury in there, with a million copies of every weapon of war ever devised ever by anyone anywhere. In other words: fucking awesome.

Clearly, these are perfectly ordinary Bears. Also, the Truck will be fine - if it wouldn't hold up to the Bear's aggression, they wouldn't have brought it. We should ask about what R&D has been working on - it can only help us.

Maybe it would be a good idea to see if we can get Midori in the shield. We should wrap her soul gem in something first, so it doesn't bump against anything. The weapons dealer should have an idea.

Also, we should totally trust Kharne, without reservation.
>>
Putting soul gems in the shield could probably totally cheat the system somehow, especially if you went back in time and started making copies of soul gems.

(There was a doujin that involved this. It was weird.)

So I'm going to assume that maybe Soul Gems can't go into the shield for some reason.

Dunno about people though.
>>
>>20506988
Now I get the image of Misaka in an old Victorian style outer space suit with Midori and tiny Pete in a little spaceship flying through the galaxies of weapons, booze bottles and explosives.
>>
>>20506988

Well, I suspect that as soon as something enters the shield it'll enter stasis. We should test this though, by sending in one of the trainee girls who loves us. We advertise in Midori's doujin for a special prize, where they'll be able to enter Mayumi's "cavern". Include enough innuendo and we should have plenty of volunteers.

First order of business: have Chiaki learn a summoning spell or something that lets her get from the shield what she wants to get, even if it is a fucking Iratus Launcher.
>>
>>20506988
Well, for one, i think we were keeping Midori's soulgem in the Inventory while she was still The Enemy. Since she hasn't come to us with recurring nightmares of dark, cold, endless fields of guns, i'm going to guess that soulgems don't retain independent memory.

Next, i think trying to cram ourself into our own shield is probably a div/0 error, and at best will render us comatose until someone manages to figure out how to work the shield and gets the soulgem out of it.

Lastly, i don't want to shove an entire person in there solely out of curiosity, because i'm not really sure that it isn't inimical to all life.

You have other questions to ask, of course, but it's then that Kharn holds up a clawed hand as she presses her fingers against her headset's earpiece, eyes narrowing behind her glasses. Ahead of you, the truck has ground to a stop, with some of the soldiers hopping off. Metallic clicks filling the air as they ready their own weapons, worn rifles and firearms being prepared for combat.

Kharn shouts a query in Russian; a hard-bitten soldier with rheumy blue eyes and a savage, jagged scar for a mouth replies quickly and tersely, an AK-47 slung casually across his body. You look towards your former partner for answers - you'd like to know what is happening, at least - and you watch as both Misaka and Midori disembark from the truck as well, running towards you with curious looks on their faces.

"Sempai? What's going on?" Midori asks as she comes up in front of you, one hand carefully holding Misaka's own. "From what I could understand, we weren't supposed to be stopping until after a few more kilometers." She looks up at Kharn, who's still murmuring into her headset. "Did Miss Valnikov say anything?"

You shake your head. You've been waiting for an answer yourself, really. Misaka, on the other hand seems to be studiously ignoring Kharn, instead giving you a look up and down.

"Boots." She says, witheringly. "Murderface in boots is a travesty. Misaka is not amused."

It's boots or broken ankles and faces, really. But you refrain from saying this and simply pet her on the head again, if only to improve her obviously black mood even if just a little bit.

A few more moments of speaking rather tersely to her headset's microphone - as well as snapping out some commands in Russian - that Kharn finally remembers her small group of guests consisting of two magical girls and a rather irate-looking arms dealer. "Ah, forgiveness, Murderface, but there seems to have been a slight issue in our preparations. Our hunting is delayed for a bit."

Kharn shakes her head. "It seems that one of the advance parties has sighted something hunting alongside a couple of hordes. It is...not a bear, that much is for certain. It is something worse than them, otherwise the bears themselves would have torn it apart instead of following it like a leader."

Well. That doesn't sound all that good. Did the advance party get a good look at it? What did they describe it as?

"The advance party was describing it as small in stature and looking like a young girl with fiery-red hair wielding some sort of sword. We lost communication with them after that, apart from their screams." Your former partner is already loading rounds into the action of her Mosin Nagant as she says this, and the rather terse, irritated tone in which she says this presents the implication quite clearly.

Somehow, a Magical Girl had gone berserk. Somewhere all too near the Research and Development base. And whoever she was, she had already done away with a handful of Kharn's men.

Pinky likes to give us our odds before an encounter with another magical girl. If she says we have a 90% or more chance of dying then we should call back all troops and fall back to the base, where the superior numbers and defences will give us a better edge.

I don't like the idea of being caught in the middle of nowhere, with a small (however skilled) party against one berserk magical girl (who could have more than 1 golden weapon) and multiple hordes of killer bears on her side.

So lets time stop and see what intel we can gather. Being forewarned is being forearmed, and all that.

"I will have to ask you a favor, even if it is much too early in our reunion for me to be doing so, Murderface." Kharn racks the bolt of her rifle forward, chambering the first round, before holding the weapon steady in her grip. "Can I count on your assistance, here? I know, I know, this is exactly what you have come here to avoid, but...think of it as hunting, still, except the prey has changed very slightly." She smiles at you, but then blinks at Midori and Misaka. "Hmm. Maybe, we should have Misaka and your subordinate escorted back to the base, yes? This is no place for them."

Misaka hears that, of course, and snaps back at your former partner in a scathing stream of Russian - which she returns ably enough, although in a more placating tone. Midori seems to have gone completely pale at the news, however, and you take her hand, asking her quietly what's wrong.

Her hand is cold, very cold. Nothing extraordinary in this weather, but it's shivering, too.

"Sempai, I...that description's a bit general, but I think I have an idea who it is." Midori's eyes are wide. "It's...I just don't know what she's doing here. If it's her, I mean, a-and we don't know for sure. Just that..." She looks at Kharn, then back at you. "Sempai, I want to come with you. You're going with Miss Valnikov, right? Take me with you. I need to see if she's who I think she is."

I was one of the votes for taking Midori, but I think I agree with anon.

This stinks. This well and truly stinks of a set-up. Magical girls do not appear out of nowhere. Whoever is behind it, even if it's just Pinky playing games, has set this up for an ambush. We've walked into ambushes before and we barely survived. We should pull back to a location of our choosing to fight.

I know people won't like me raising it, but Kharn could have planned this. Just because we don't think she'll kill us doesn't mean she won't try and take the Golden DEagle. We need to watch the girls. She may be cautious about our time stop, but we get separated from them and she's got us over a barrel.

It was with great reluctance that we asked for her help once before, and that ended up biting us in the ass for sure.

Either A: She'll laugh us off for asking for help against something where we don't entirely seem to need it as badly as we did before(because we were literally rendered comatose, we had no choice), or B: She'll gladly help us.. "S-someone from the Pleiades Saints, Sempai. Mirai Wakaba." Midori hesitantly says the word, as if loathe to give reality to her worst fears by vocalizing them. "I...I hope it's not her, but that particular description, a-and with bears involved..." She shakes her head. "She's...her gimmick is that she summons bears, sempai. The sword thing she uses really rarely, because she doesn't like violence. She only uses it when she's really, really angry..."

You blink at this. If she's really from the Pleiades Saints, then why is she bothered about it, you ask? If you remember, they never got along well with Midori, treating the Callidus like so much chopped liver. Why the concern now, then?

"S-sempai, I..." Your subordinate glances at Kharn, who blinks in slight confusion, before turning back to you. "Mirai...Mirai-san, out of uniform, w-was..." Midori shakes her head vehemently. "--IS a friend of mine, sempai. Tthe only one who talked to me outside of assignments, only one who approached me and asked me how I was from time to time. She even made me a hand-sewn teddybear, Sempai." She grabs your hand, and you feel how cold hers are once more. "Let me come with you. She's the only friend in the world I have except for you, sempai. Please."

...Funny. You remember something EXACTLY like this happening. Except that one involved a certain brown-haired idol. That didn't turn out very well, even if it did end in your favor. Somewhat.

What are the odds, then, that this would turn out the same? Or worse?

Oh well i suppose that we need to go along with it. I DO NOT trust Midori right now. We will have to kill her friend. And just like with Mami this will ONLY turn out horribly. So be prepared to soul strip Midori at the FIRST sign of treason.

Welp, she's compromised. Back to base with ye!

We need to have Misaka escort her back to base. Also, promise we'll try to bring the girl in alive.

[x] Timestop. Bitchslap Pinky.

If its too much of chucklefuck-territory though I would also go with:

[x] Take Midori with you, give her the chance to reason with that person, while giving Misaka time to set up a good sniping position, Kharn and Tiny Pete stay with Misaka.

Its like a Plan B that has another Plan B attached to it! If the red haired bitch tries to fight Chiaki will engage her and Misaka will provide Sniping-Support, Tiny Pete and Khran being there to protect from Winne the poo`s angry cousins.
>>
>>20507583
'OK, but if I tell you to run, you WILL OBEY, you hear me?'
>>
Ah. Mirai might think that Midori is dead. So.. yeah, there's a chance we might talk things over, maybe.

Or she could be pissed that Midori left. Eh, then it's just a fight like we were expecting.

So, take Midori along, see if we can parley.
>>
>>20507583
"I say Misaka can stay if she keeps her distance. She may be able to provide support with a certain rifle she's used before. Tiny Pete will of course be with her at all times. I've seen it battle. The safest place in the world is to be is close to it, no matter where that may be."

"And you." Face Midori, pointing a finger at her. "You can come, but if you do, you're going to aid me in killing her..." Poke her with the finger with each word for the rest of the sentence "...no matter who she turns out to be. Don't slow down, don't hold back. You're with me now..." (point thumb at ourself) "...and there ain't no rest for the wicked."

Damn I hadn't thought of that, this could be retribution.

However, what if she's here for revenge? What is she wants to kill us because she thinks we killed Midori?

That's a long, long shot though so I'll discount it. But I could imagine her volunteering for a mission to take us out from her incubator, who only wants to make sure OB doesn't fuck with him any more.

In any case I still think we should take Midori with us, just make sure she stays well back and doesn't rush in or anything, I don't want her getting killed.

Uhm... Why do you poeple want to kill her in the first place? I mean its not like she has a golden weapon. So killing her is pretty much without any benefit.

We should try to use Midori to reason with her, if it doesn`t work we can still kill her.
>>
>>20507583

[x]"...Fuck." This is the part where we stop bullshitting around and act decisively. First off, grab Kharn and get her to order the cavalry back a bit. A fighting retreat if needed. Second off, we, ourself, alone, are going to the forefront. We are going to confront this magical girl, and get this shit figured out. We ask why, and how to get her to leave us the fuck alone. We we beat her into unconsciousness if we have to. Our allies are only to shoot bears coming at us or maybe cover us a little if she beats our ass. And tell Midori to prepare for the worst if it happens, as a magical girl, we don't have time to play around if she's on a gold-powered murder spree, but we'll see if that's really the case first.

But we are done wasting time.

People want to kill her because she's Shana from shakugan no shana. One of the worst character conceivable, from one of the worst show conceivable.

But she's the friend of Midori, so it's all good, I guess. Lets her live.
>>
I suspect the MG has been sent to take care or our little green-haired deserter, so here's the deal:
we hand Midori a gun, and tell she can come along ONLY if she's ready to kill. We describe her the grisly (lol) scene we found and make her understand the kind of person we're dealing with.

We allow her exatly ONE shot at settling this peacefully, with words or mind powers. If it doesn't ork, it's the Russian Retirement Plan for the girl.

I suppose we could try searching our shield for one, but it's no guarantee.

Misaka needs to go back to base. She's excellent sniper support, but in this environment, without a rifle she's just a target. Midori is too emotionally invested for us to bring her along, no matter what call we end up making.

Look her in the eyes "Trust your sempai. I'll put her down if necessary, but it's possible to bring her in alive, I'll do it. As your friend I promise this."

This also ensures Misaka and escort actually makes it back.

This is Noir, and if my Noir reading has told me anything, it's that fights can go one sided on a dime.

We probably should hightail it back to Base. Lots of firepower back there and it'll lead backing to our words. She'll be less likely to hurt ANY of us, Midori, Kharn, Misaka, whoever.

If we can't do that, for, say, too far away, or the secret should remain a secret, then we better prepare. She seems to be hankering for death, and is using her sword, which Midori told us is when she's angry. We should attempt to calm her down first, using Midori, who should be covered. She shouldn't be allowed to do anything unnecessary and dangerous beyond the expected.

If everything goes pear shaped, we need to keep Midori from dying and keep this PM and her bear mafia at bay.
>>
>>20507942
I don't know they could both be helpful, we just need to give Misaka the right hardware and set her up in a good overwatch position. And Midori might be able to lock down this girl with her Nightmare mode enough for a non-lethal take down, leaving the bears to us and Kharn. Besides it would be good tactical practice as Warmaster cause this will be the kind of group tactics expected of us.

You let out a sigh as you shift your right arm slightly so as to get a good look at your Shield. It's clicking a bit erratically, but other than that it's still its battle-damaged self, and the cold is making frost form on its rim.

You play with the idea of racking it an entire 180 degrees, initiating your Time Stop and making Pinky materialize out here, in the wilderness - before hauling off and slapping her in the face. Chastising her for daring to interrupt your hunting trip, something you desperately needed to unwind with. How can you pick up after her if she forces you to remain an overworked and overwound Magical Girl? Who does she expect to collect her golden crap? Midori? Or maybe Sayaka? Whoever's just the teensiest bit crazier than you?

You smile slightly as you play with the idea, and nothing more. Of course, that's crazy. That's suicide. For all her honeyed words and murmured declarations of love, she's all but admitted that your dreams involving her have come true. And you know she'll do it again the moment you let her.

"You're nothing but trouble to me." You hear yourself murmur underneath your breath as you stare into the clicking gears at the middle of your shield. You look up at Midori's puzzled, expectant face, before finally replying to her - that yes, she'll be able to come, but she has to face the reality that her friend has been sent to kill you - or her.

[1/2]

>>20508075

It's as predictable Incubator behavior as it can get, really. Incubators are, after all, notoriously jealous creatures - if it finds out that a Magical Girl under its employ had gone rogue or went to the other side, it will immediately deploy resources in order to destroy that traitorous Magical Girl. No matter where she was. And the method of execution would be personal - through another Magical Girl, hopefully someone who at least is involved with the traitor at one point or another.

Kirika had been proof enough of that.

Midori nods after a moment. "I...I accept that, Sempai. R-really, I do." She seems to hesitate for a split second, before nodding fiercely, a set expression in her face as she looks back at your eyes. "I...I've dreaded something like this happening ever since I came over to your side, Sempai, and it's happening now. I have to deal with it." She draws in a shuddering breath, and lets it out just as shakily.

"A-and as attractive a prospect it is for me to just hide from it, I...I have to be there. If we're going to have to kill Mirai-san, sempai, then I want to be there to say goodbye and...and take responsibility." She nods again.

You stare at her for a moment, before nodding. She's...she certainly seems to be adjusting to this sort of thing very well. A bit too easily, for someone who'd just been told that they'd have to watch their best friend die, but then again, Midori's shown a rather strong sense of pragmatism, even with her...strange fantasies. If anything, she was able to seperate her work from her life, and that was a good sign.

>2012 ACE
>Not saying bearserk

I shucky ducky.

Anyway, fuck. We're probably the Kazumi to Homuhomu's whatever that bitch's name is so it stands to reason we'd have to fight a Saint.

[X] Tell Midori she can come along, but out of sight and cloaked. Bring Misaka as sniper and Pete as watch, Midori cloaks all of them. If Kharn argues, bring up Kirika and tell her we wouldn't be here today if it weren't for Misaka.

Tell Kharn to take a company of men and swing around Mirai's six; we're setting up a pincer and we need to do something about those damned bears. Tell her we are going to be vanguard and try to talk Mirai off the ledge.

If Mirai goes bearserk, we timestop, chew out Pinky and shoot to cripple. If we rack the Golden DEagle, we go back and discipline Pinky. Verbally, that is. She may be evil, but she's still Madoka and Madoka's kind of a punk.
>>
Huh. Now that I think about it, did Kharn or anyone check that dead skier's body to see if it had a radio? Maybe he wasn't just a tourist, but a scout sent by a rival Incubator to find QB's R&D lab? And the MG was sent here to confirm the location before a MG strike team is sent in?
>>
>>20508139
"Comrade, I am sorry to interrupt, but we have to go. If we wait any longer, the trail may get cold." Kharn cuts in from the side, her armored legs clanking as she pats the snow off the jagged plates. She nods towards Midori. "She is coming with us? If so, I will have her armed. But Misaka..." Your former partner glances back at your arms dealer, who is fussing about with Tiny Pete. "Her machine can stay and help, but she must be escorted back to base. This is too dangerous."

It's then that she grins. "Ah, you are Warmaster now, I keep forgetting. Right. We will do as you command, here, in this situation. Consider it your first lesson." You try to protest, but she shakes her head. "No, no, do not reject it. Whatever your decision, we shall follow. Command us, Warmaster, we are about to go to war."

Kharn's grin widens as she bows to you.

What is your plan of action?
>>
>>20508140

Half step too slow. And who's to say we don't wanna commit suicide, Deculture? Murderface hates herself enough for it and if we're a Homuclone we'll just have another long stretch of amnesia while Pinky masturbates over our corpse or something.

>>20508158
send misaka home with a mundane escort, I want pete here
>>
>>20508158
Keep Tiny Pete, send some of the soldiers back with Misaka.

Kharn is right; it's too dangerous to bring Misaka along when we can't put her in a building a mile away with a dedicated MG bodyguard; even then Yakuza goons almost got through (and they would have, too, if they'd have tried just detonating some explosives in the room a floor below where Misaka was shooting from instead of trying a frontal assault against an Eversor).

Tiny Pete and the rest of the soldiers can come to help keep the bears from outflanking us and bear-rushing us.
>>
>>20508158
Send Misaka back with an escort plus Tiny Pete. We can always call him back to us if things go south - I just want to make sure that she's got enough firepower with her in case they run into a roving pack of super bears.
>>
>>20508158
Snipers on both wings, full camo.

Chiaki acts as a bait. Pulling bears into range using short time-stop bursts.
Tiny Pete, Kharn and Midori drop on bear-girl.
>>
>>20508158
1. Put Misaka into a MiG. Let her fly CAS.
2. Soldiers are going to deal with the bears. They know how it's done best, let them do it best.
3. Abandon the vehicle, it's a too good target.
4. Ask Midori about the new girl's modus operandi. Which weapons, close or ranged combat, obvious weak points, and so on.
>>
>>20508158

First order would be to get the biggest fucking gun from the base to the hunting grounds, stat.

Second order would be to prep artillery. Fuck going into a battlefield without turning it into porridge first.

Third order would be to get a few flamethrowers. WE ARE NOT DEALING WITH BEARS. I REPEAT, THIS IS NOT A BEAR WE ARE DEALING WITH.
>>
>>20508187
I'm trying to remember, did Misaka fix the teleport beacon yet?
I don't think she did yet, but I could be wrong.
>>
>>20508158

Send Misaka back with at least half of the soldiers. We only keep what we need to move light and fast. Send Tiny Pete with Misaka. We need to make sure she gets back. If she gets hurt, it'll rip out our heart again. Swap in our crappy rifle for anything nastier we might have on the trucks. Oh, and warn Kharn about us going Flesh of Fallen Angels in the middle of a firefight, in case we get in too deep and accidentally draw it.
>>
I just had an idea.
We should try to get a gustav partially in our shield, with connections to the firing mechanism going outside as well.
Yes, it would break our arm firing and be one shot only for many other reasons. But nothing has ever fucked shit up quite like the gustav. Y'know, since it uses inert rounds.
>>
>>20508158
Fine. If we need to follow her trail before we lose track of her then at the very least I think we should call for reinforcements from the base, telling them to follow us as quickly as they can. Then go forwards I guess.

Send Misaka back with a small force.

Keep Midori in the truck.
>>
>>20508158
Basically what Kharn said.
A good war master should listen to the advice of subordinates with experience and frankly we would only suggest the same thing with the exception of sending tiny pete back with Misaka.
>>
>>20508158

Tentative Plan: Misaka goes back to base and remotely commands Tiny Pete, who will stay with the group. Misaka is a great sniper, but she would be too vulnerable out here; Kharn, Chiaki, and Midori will be pre-occupied with hordes of bears. Also, AK-47-equipped regulars are a good escort, but I'm fairly sure that those guns can't stop ten or more berserking bears with no sense of self-preservation charging at them. Besides, if there are giant robots at base equipped with anti-infantry weaponry, odds are that Misaka would probably be one of the most qualified people on the planet to drive one. We may need that backup in case this new MG has called in every bear in the countryside for this job.

Get more details from Midori about her abilities that would be very useful in an immediate conflict. Can she hide the scent and sight of a group of soldiers, or confuse animals?
>>
>>20508158

[x]Take Midori, send Misaka back with Tiny Pete. If she resists, knock her out. Set out fast, with Chiaki taking the lead, the rest following her spearpoint to support her. Fight defensively until Chiaki can get into range to try and do the Nanoha thing. Maybe we can find a white flag to put on a stick of something to try and hail her.

If that falls through, preforate everything that moves.
>>
>sending Misaka back with soldiers
Aren't these the kind of soldiers the bears can maim? I'm not so sure I feel that's safe enough.
Send soldiers and Tiny Pete.
>>
>>20508187

Seconding this. Misaka will go back with Tiny Pete, but she will leave a teleport beacon with us. When she is safely at base or ensconced within a giant robot, she will contact us or do some other recognizeable signal (i.e. signal flares?), and we will then teleport Pete to us.
>>
>>20508265

>>20508230

I'd say keep Misaka and Pete together at the centre of the group. Murderface, Kharn and Midori slightly ahead, with two flanks of soldiers.

>>
>>20508200
Changing this to sending Tiny Pete back with Misaka, then we teleport Tiny Pete back to us if we need his help.
>>
Damn, if we had the foresight to bring Souji with us he could have been our bear bait, erm I mean point man.
>>
>>20508278

Mah nigga.

If we're sending Misaka back, we should lead Mirai alone nearer to the base's perimeter so she can get chewed up by mechs and Misakas. That sniper position saved our ass.

Either way, Midori needs to make that money. Harry her friend/protect our allies with illusions.
>>
>>20508319
I think she needs it more than we do

We have Kharn, Midori and a heap of soldiers here, we will be sending some soldiers back but three MG's is still more than enough
>>
We may also want to see if the base can lend us some air recon support, or real-time satellite imaging of the area. Soldiers leading us around on the ground would be great, but having several pairs of eyes in the air would be awesome. Even if it's a heavily wooded area, they may be able to spot the densest concentrations of the Bear Horde and alert us if we're getting close to them, or if they seem to be shifting in one direction or another.

Leading the bears and the MG to the base would be the safest way to do this, but the MG is probably not an idiot. She probably knows her best chance of killing us (or Midori) lies within the forest, and that she and her horde will get cut down by whatever defenders an incubator with an absurd amount of insane R&D scientists and unlimited funding can afford. She will probably not follow us back to base if we try to lure her there.
>>
>>20508385
The problem is also, if she realizes that an R&D facility is there, and she IS on assignment from an Incubator, that Incubator may decide to send an entire MG strike team in order to get at the goodies in the facility and to dick over competition.

You need to learn more, in a setting that doesn't run the risk of your friends and a whole lot other people dying because of you screwing it up like always.

"Do not sigh and groan when your subordinates are expecting you to command them, Murderface." Kharn chides, her clawed hands on her hips. "That is childish, you know. It does not give the best impression."

Oh, you don't say? You refrain from saying that as you place your glasses back on and clear your throat. It's then that you call Misaka over, and the arms dealer blinks in puzzlement as she runs over, nearly tripping over a branch as she does so. "Y-yes? Murderface, what is it?"

You bite your lip in hesitation before blurting it out. Misaka blinks once more, confused, before frowning very crossly.

"That is not funny joke, Murderface. Misaka must be here. Misaka must see if Tiny Pete's repairs are okay against bears!"

You tell her that she'll have other chances to. Right now, she has to return to base, along with Tiny Pete and the other soldiers. As soon as they're secure there, then Tiny Pete can teleport back here and support you. At least he'll...uh...he'll still get EXP points then, or something, right?

Misaka's frown deepens at you, before nodding grudgingly. "M-Misaka supposes so, but...it's not the same as being here to cheer Murderface and Tiny Pete on..."

[1/2]
>>
>>20508405
I see you are thinking like a Warmaster already.
>>
>>20508359
You assume that Misaka will be under threat when she's sent back to the base, I do not think this will be the case.

It seems to me that the enemy is trying to draw us (and by that I specifically mean Murderface and Midori) out by killing our scouts. Based on this I don't think she'll suddenly flank us and cut off our route back to the base.

Nor do I think that she's targeting Misaka at all, hell I doubt she knows Misaka is here. The only way she would attack Misaka is if she was in her way, and the most likely place for that to happen is if Misaka stays with us.

We are 100% guaranteed to get into combat soon, and for that I think we could really use Tiny Pete. His armour and close combat abilities will make him essential to defeating the hordes.
>>
>>20508385
That just means we can't let her escape alive.

Or dead. In fact, lets just make sure she doesn't escape.
>>
>>20508429

>20508429

You offer Misaka one of your rare smiles. You tell her that both you and Tiny Pete would feel much better if she was safe behind closed doors. And this way, she'll be there to send backup - which you really can't trust her brother to be able to do in any capacity whatsoever. This makes her smile as well, before finally relenting.

"F-fine! Fine, Misaka will go back, just because Murderface asked! A-and will have Tiny Pete teleport back after we are safe in base!" She looks up at you, pouting. "Murderface still has her teleport beacon, right? The golden cross pendant!"

A brief rummage in your inventory confirms this. You lift it out and show it to her, and her face brightens.

"Ah! Keep it! I will use it to track your location and have Tiny Pete sent there right away!" Misaka smiles, before grabbing your hands with her own. "Misaka is being a good girl, yes?"

You nod at this, smiling. Of course. She's been nothing but a good girl to you from the very start. Tiny Pete lumbers up from behind Misaka, towering over the both of you, and it's with a final pat to the head that you entrust her to the gigantic machine. You nod at it, and the tusked helm with the crimson eye slits nod back.

[COMPLIANCE, CAPTAIN MURDERFACE.] Tiny Pete booms, the words snarled by vox-corruption. At your behest, the remaining soldiers form up around the unlikely pair, weapons drawn, and it's then that they make their way back to the base. More cautious than ever before.

>>20508418

If we wanted other people to pilot them, we'd need to have a place for them to take off from, and we don't know if anyone in our group has the ability to pilot them. We can probably use one immediately ourselves if we do the Fate/Zero Berserker thing, but we should save something flashy like that as a trump card.
>>
>>20508639
Godspeed Tiny Pete
>>
We also need to think about how our enemy will go about doing this.

Mirai can summon bears, but we'll have to assume that she can exert influence on them. Strong enough to make them into a cohesive force and give them orders. Not sure if she has to verbally command them or if she has some telepathy going on.

If she's reasonably intelligent, she'll likely treat them like a traditional army. Send out scouts, keep the bulk of the army near her to keep her safe and so she can immediately order them to go places.

If she's a reasonably experienced tactician (and biologist), she may have them dispersed around the forest with a set of orders to keep an ear and eye out for things. When one of them hears something or catches a glimpse of the target, it goes to notify more bears, which then signal to notify even more bears, etc. etc. until a large enough force is informed. Then they converge.

If she has telepathic abilities with the bears, then all of these things are still valid, just sped up by a factor of three or so.
>>
>>20508405
Hmm. Looking at that angle, if Mirai isn't out there looking for the facility, Chiaki, Midori or isn't already Golden Weapon crazed... then it's also possible that the other incubator already know where it is and she's out here as bait while a seperate strike force goes for the base.
If her bears are the same killer bears that's been around all this while.. she might have had allies that already tracked the hunting parties.

It's probably best for Chiaki and Midori(for illusion cloaking hopefully) to head out to scout Mirai first. We need confirmed visual on the weapon and what sort of airs she's putting on.
>>
>>20508643
Considering they were collecting ice on the tarmac, wouldn't normal air force regs require that they not have fuel or armed weapons?

Of course, this is the Russian Air Force, in the ass-end of Siberia. They might have left fully-fueled MiG's with armed missiles on the tarmac just collecting ice.
>>
>>20508682

So we approach things the way we normally do. Charge.

We track her and punch a hole through. She gets one chance to disarm completely, if she doesn't then our allies provide support while Kharn and Chiaki go straight for her, with Chiaki taking the lead. We're the warmaster, we lead from the front. We punch through, take her out, hopefully with a shot to the soul gem to make it nice and quick and hopefully the bears disperse. Getting into a war of attrition with the bears just means we'll get worn down.

Hard and fast, what we're best at.
>>
>>20508682
Oh god are we going to have to roll bear lore?

One other thing to note, although I could be wrong about this, but I'm guessing that each time she summons a bear it clouds up her soul gem. The last thing we need to do is deal with a witch, so we might want to focus on taking her out instead of the bears.
>>
>>20508744
I would prefer if we capture her alive so that we can interrogate her.
>>
>>20508639

Their departure leaves only three individuals left in the forest: you, Kharn, and Midori. What had supposed to be a leisurely slaughter of some oversized woodland creatures with the use of long firearms had now turned into something you had travelled over a literal ocean to get away from: trying to kill a Magical Girl before she kills you. It doesn't help that she seems to have a few friends with her. Large, furry friends who seem to have quite the appetite and sadistic streak.

"Not bad, Warmaster!" Kharn cheers, clapping in applause. "Is not quite how I would have handled it, but it is a smart move, to send a VIP back to base with more than enough protection while we take care of the threat." She smiles. "And I have to say, this is very nostalgic. Just three of us against an army. It is like back in the old days!" She glances at Midori, who seems to be shivering in place. "Well, kind of. Cannot be perfect. Here, Midori. Catch!"

"W-wha...?" Your subordinate is barely able to react quickly enough to catch the rifle tossed to her. It's the Mosin Nagant that Kharn had prepped for hunting, but obviously never got to use. "B-but I don't really use guns, I--"

"Is easy, you know? Just work bolt back and forth with every shot, and then reload after five shots! You load here, five at a time, and then push bolt back in again." Kharn points out the rough and ready rules of killing with a Mosin Nagant. "Aim from the iron sights, and if target is close enough to hit, use rifle as club. Easy!"

[3/4]
>>
...wait, does this mean that Kharn and Midori will have to transform now?

"But Miss Valnikov, I--"

"Always make sure to wait a second before firing, too, to make sure of what you are aiming at! You may hit me or Murderface here, and it is bad luck for both of us, and worse luck for you!" Kharn laughs, but the threat in her eyes isn't to be laughed at. You've seen that look before, once, when you glanced down at your reflection from the Gold Desert Eagle's slide.

As such, Midori is properly cowed.

"Y-yes, Miss Valnikov. I'll...I'll do my best." Your subordinate murmurs, holding the rifle tighter.

You frown at Kharn scaring Midori shitless, but instead of calling her out on it, you ask her about what gun she'll be using, since she gave hers to Midori.

"I will not be using a gun, Murderface." Kharn murmurs, her back to you as she flexes the unnaturally-clawed fingers of the hands by her sides. "If the advance party's reports are true, then this means I can finally have my one last sword fight."

It's then that she raises one skeletal hand up to her face - the crimson teardrop of a Soul Gem sparks loudly into existence on the center of her palm, its gildings pure black instead of silver or brass. Its motif thorny spikes, rather than elegant reliefs of angels and angelic wings.

"And I will be taking her skull. With how many of my men she'd killed, I believe I deserve it."

>"Aim from the iron sights, and if target is close enough to hit, use rifle as club. Easy!"

>>
>>20508942
Hey, he gave us the bear hunting trip we asked for.
It's your fault for neglecting to specify that we had to be successful, or that we wouldn't become the hunted.
Or that the bears wouldn't be strong, big, fast, and smart enough to actually threaten a Magical Girl.

You're getting what you asked for, not what you wanted. Deal with it.

She's going for the kill. She's not even going to wait for Midori to try and talk to Mirai.
What if Mirai can actually be saved, like Midori was? Will Kharn kill her anyway? This could be a source of great drama between both, and we will be inevitably dragged.

Mirai better be a good talker.

I'd never tarnish trust like that. It'd be strictly SOL with our favorite cast of characters and a party load of tragic soldiers waiting to be killed, all going Bear Hunting in Siberia.

>atargedy strict

Yep, a targedy strictly.
>>
>>20509433
In case i can't make it to the next thread - If this MG is her to make an example of Midori, then it's probably best if she doesn't look like herself on the approach, no?

It shouldn't be too taxing on her magic reserves to disguise herself as Kyoko or Sayaka or magical Iori or something. After all, it'd be really embarrassing if our first minion got dead on the first day of Warmaster training.
>>
>>20509516
>disguise herself as Iori
That probably won't blow over too well with her.
>>
>>20509552
And that's why it's the last thing they'll expect!
Yeah, no, magical girl Iori disguise was mostly a joke.
>>
>>20509552
Wouldn't go over well with anyone. Midori would be miffed, but if she did it on a whim and Chiaki didn't see her transforming, then she'll BSoD for a while.

and yes, I know this is a joke. I got my giggle.
>>
>>20509516

We hope it isn't too taxing. We don't know how well Midori's power works in battle. I think we need to stop and talk to her about tactics before we jump in.
>>
One thing that I'm worried about is how this rival incubator discovered that Midori would be going over to Siberia. Either QB's got a mole in his organization (likely, given how intense the competition seems to be), or Midori may still be unwittingly linked to her incubator in a way; it may even be possible that Midori snuck a call to this incubator while we assigned her to watch over Misaka at the airport. Or perhaps called someone else dear to her, who may have given up the information.

Alternatively, assuming that Midori is loyal to us: the only people who we told about the Siberia operation were Mami, Misaka, Midori, and everyone who was listening in on our conversation within the Lovelace household. I doubt that that one Lovelace guy would have the guts to do such a thing, and Fabiola might not either. But Iori, on the other hand, thinks that her perceived lover has cheated on her and client-zoned her. If she looked out of the window while Chiaki was departing the mansion, she may have caught a glimpse of Midori waiting at the car.

Now, Iori doesn't have a lot of friends left. But she does have money in spades. It is possible that she contacted an incubator in sore need of cash (Midori's former incubator seems to fit this description, as he stoops to making rape videos), and calls out a hit on Chiaki and/or The Green-Haired Bitch What Almost Raped Me and Now Has Stolen My Lover (Midori), both of whom she knows are going to Siberia. This incubator sends out Mirai to kill Chiaki and/or Midori, as she has history with Midori and can take advantage of the murderous kill-bears in Siberia.

Of course, it could also be that this incubator has known about the Siberia base for some time, and dispatched Mirai to Siberia to keep tabs on it.
>>
>>20510128

Alternatively, it could also be that Midori's phone has not been changed since her tenure under the other incubator, and is tapped.
>>
>>20510128

Or it could be a trap by Pinky. She just happens to show up as we're on our way to Siberia, for a chat, because she's lonely?
>>
>>20510196
Yes, she did.
