Good evening once again, /tg/! Your GM is rested and has an alarm set to go off every 15 minutes in case he DOES fall asleep, so there's absolutely nothing to stop today's quest thread!

> gets abducted by aliens

Well dick. Ah well, at least this UFO has wi-fi! While I figure out how to work these plasma weapons, nurse my recently-probed rear and bulk up until I resemble Duke Nukem, so that I can crash this sonofabitch into the Mojave Desert let's have a show of hands to see who's ready to play!

Previous thread is archived here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/20533203/

I have NO idea what's going on.

Lets do this thing! Whatever it is.

> Alright, let's get this started! I just realised that this is the tenth thread! Before we begin, I want to take a moment to thank everyone who's stayed with this thread so long. I hope you're having as good a time playing as I am running and here's to many more threads to come. Now that's done with, on with the game!

The tribe tries to fashion a strong, sturdy gate for the wall, but the result is far from satisfactory. Lacking the proper knowlege of metal working, or carpentry, the best the tribe can do is a barricade that is hauled into and out of place every morning and night.

The wise ones return to their work on wearing copper, much to the confusion of the rest of the village. Any result still seems like a long way off for them.

That's the tie-breaker! Thank goodness. I was worried for a moment.

Actually, REALLY should have said though sooner, but...
RULES ALERT
There is no division of labour in a tribe this size. If you chose to research while also taking a labour-intensive action, it may take longer to discover the new technology. Likewise, if you split your research between two subjects, they will take longer, as the focus of your wise ones is divided.
>>
Your wise ones do their best, wracking their brains, trying to find some way to turn the copper into clothing. They think they may have a workable idea, but something practical is still a good way off.

The wise ones have an easier time refining the tribe's carpentry techniques, however. It's only little advancements, but the tribe's huts have proper doors and the like now!

Armor, we can get nets next turn
>>
>>20557459
How do we do it every year? Spearing?
>>
>>20557377
A) Fish
D) Research cold-weather shelter improvements (If we don't have the prereqs to improve insulation in the next couple turns, then maybe the armor instead)

Also, would it consume an Action Point to ask Chani what the deal is with the fish? Seems like it would only require her shaman to contact her, hardly a massive tribal time investment. Just see if she knows anything about why they're late. Maybe there's another tribe upstream catching them or something.
>>
B)
and
D) Carpentry

Right now we may not need more children, we probably have a hostile tribe nearby.

And to the newcomers, you can skim some of the former threads on suptg. A recap:
We got a crude map, got relatively winter proof houses, some knowledge of carpentry, basic copper tools and some weapons, a defensive wall, knowledge of pottery, of course the fire, bows, 2 friendly spirits (spirit of the river, and a wolf spirit, both with their respective shamans), a tribe down the river that is perhaps afraid of us and we both drain the nearby resources, we have signs of another nearby hostile tribe that killed some of our scouts, we know how to smoke food to preserve it, we discovered booze, we have 2 cultural events, have rafts and canoes.
Can't think of much more right now. Someone has anything to add?
>>
>>20557459
Agreed, but maybe in spring. Mid-harvest isn't really the time. Eventually, though, I want some stick-mesh nets/trapping cages for the fish.
>>
EVENT
Towards the end of the fishing time for the salmon run, the fishermen and women are suddenly imperriled! From the opposite bank of the river, a lightweight spear flashes out, far further than any human could throw it! The copper tip flashes in the sun, before it sinks into the wood of one of the rafts. That single spear is followed by several more, some splashing into the river, others sinking into the wood of the canoes and boats and a few into flesh. Amid screams of pain and panic, the fishermen frantically make for the village shore. The spears start falling short as they flee, bringing word to the village.

How will the tribe respond? (One action)
A) Order everyone to stay away from the river and keep hidden
B) Send a few scouts to see if they can spot anyone on the other side
C) Send a full force of hunters to the river and storm the other bank, using the rafts
D) Consult with Chani for aid
E) Send the wise ones and elders to the river bank, to call the unknown attackers to talk
F) Wait a couple of days, then return to fishing.

REMINDER
Heroes can be assigned to actions to boost their chances of success. Some heroes are better suited to some actions than others, however. And some actions will just be flat-out wrong and automatically have a negative consequence. Heroes can also be assigned to regular turn actions, to boost their effectiveness.
>>

D nets

D nets
>>
D) Say that this savages are attacking her river!
Also if only we had armor...
>>
>>20557459
Currently, fishing is done via use of fish-spears.

>>20557530
Talking's a free action, no matter who it's to! You may not get a straight answer however and people's responses to questions will be coloured by their personality.
>>
>>20557567
Send the scouts for now. I don't know if those are just copper-tipped arrows or something nastier, but I don't want our entire fighting force getting picked off as they wander blind in the woods. Once we know where these pricks are, THEN we can send the hunters.
>>
>>20557567
B. Lets find out about these aggressors before we grind them into the dust.
>>
C) attack!
>>
D) consult with chani for now
>>
sounds like the attackers have atlatls, a spear thrower that works off leverage, getting some of those would be useful
>>
>>20557608
Well, they've already given us a few nice samples of what kind of weapons they use right? What do the Wise men make of their spears?
>>
>>20557673
Fuck that! Bows are better in all respects
>>
>>20557687
They look like lightweight spears. They could maybe be thrown well, but they'd be pretty useless for close-range work, which is the current focus of the tribe's spears.
>>
>>20557716
What are the tips made of?
Are they poisoned?
>>
>>20557750
The spears are tipped with copper, much like our own, except the blades are thinner and lighter. They don't seem to be coated in any kind of venom. Several of the fishers are badly hurt and one was killed, falling into the river and floating downstream with a spear in his chest, but the wounds seem to be just what you'd expect from such weapons.
>>
>>20557712

quotes form wikipedia
"A traditional atlatl is a long-range weapon and can readily impart to a projectile speeds of over 150 km/h "

" it requires skill rather than muscle power alone. Thus women and children would have been able to participate in hunting"

" stone-tipped projectiles from the Aztec atlatl were not powerful enough to penetrate Spanish steel plate armor, but they were strong enough to penetrate the chain mail, leather and cotton armor that most Spanish soldiers wore"

stone tipped pierced chain mail, I imagine copper tipped spears would do better
>>
>>20557787
That bodes ill for our largely unarmored asses. Shit.
>>
rolled 1 = 1

>>20557787
Actually, both weapons have their own advantages. Some types of bows can indeed pierce plate armour. Of course, it's entirely up to the tribe what direction they take. For now, there's this crisis to deal with.

It looks like a tie! 2 votes to consult with Chani, 2 votes to send out scouts.
1-3 Consult with Chani
4-6 Send out scouts
>>
>>20557821
On bows versus atlatls, I think it's very important to have a diverse arsenal of devices of death and destruction. Learning to use the latter would be VERY helpful as it seems women and children can use them.

Not that I'm suggesting fielding women and children against warriors, but it'd be nice to have if the village gets attacked y'know?
>>
The tribe elects to speak to Chani, mustering at her shrine as Rina fervently prays to the spirit! The position is a little risky, given the shrine is right at the water's edge, but before long, Chani appears, rising up, out of the water with barely a ripple. "Why have you called to me, my priestess? I felt fear and violence on my river, not just the killing of fish alone."

How will the tribe respond? (Chose general demeanor and give specifics)
A) We honour her, it's time we got something back. Tell her to help smite the attackers.
B) Apologise for disturbing her and try to ask for aid without directly asking it.
C) Ask her straightforwardly if she'll help us or not.
D) Desperately beg and plead her to help her servants against the attackers.
E) Try to be sneaky and manipulate her into doing our work for us, without her realising it.

> I'll give a bonus to the chance of an action working, if the wording is well-played.
>>
>>20557949
What's the personality of Chani again? As is I want to go with C, but Deities are a nutty bunch.
>>
>>20557982
Last time the tribe had a major discussion with Chani, she was slightly wide-eyed, eager to learn and find out more about the tribe and humans. She seems different now though, like she's realised the differences between herself and mortals. It's hard to tell.
>>
>>20557949

'We have been attacked upon the shores of your river by foes unknown, soiling it with our blood. We beseech you that you lend whatever aid you can to protect our people!'

Show her the spears they used to attack us with.
>>
>>20557949
>Not sure which letter this would be, but...
We were attacked by invaders on your very shores. We cannot ask you to take the field yourself, or to fight our battles for us, but your knowledge of the lands beyond our territory greatly outstrips our own. Please, provide us with any information you can about these attackers. The more knowledge we have of them, the greater the likelihood we might drive them back, both for our own tribe's survival and the sanctity of your waters.
>>
A) Tell her how we all love her and how we are afraid that attackers may destroy shrine and hurt her and Rina.
>>
B/C apologize for a minute then ask if she will help us defeat the bastards that dared to attack us and her river.
>>
>>20558049
Seconded so we can hurry this along.
>>
>>20558029
"My river has seen blood before and will do again. In the end, it is all washed away. You yourselves fill it with blood from your fishing spears every year. Still, I favour Rina, so I will grant you a little of my strength, if she is fit to wield it."

>>20558031
"I know little of the world, besides that immediately around my river. Those that attacked you come from a place far away from my shores, so I know little about them." She closes her eyes, speaking slowly as she seems to consider something, "There are... eighteen of them. They wear animal skins like yours, but different. They carry bright copper spears and curved pieces of wood. Some have axes with copper heads, or copper-bladed knives. That is all I can see of them at the moment."

What will the tribe do now?
A) Continue to ask Chani for more help
B) Send out those scouts
C) Take another action
>>
A) If they try to attack us through river would you allowed this?
>>
B those fuckers are gonna die soon. Slowly.
>>
>>20558209
would it be possible to flank them?
by say crossing the river further up, if we send scouts straight across they'll just get slaughtered
>>
>>20558353
Entirely possible, yes. Or at least, you can try as such. Should I take that as a second vote to send out the scouts then?
>>
>>20558209
Thank our goddess for her gracious (if unnerving) help.

Then send out those Scouts. I've got a fever and the only cure is dead asshats.
>>
>>20558209
If she could give us the current locations of the 18, we could strike from the shadows, be on them before they know what happened. Might be more specific than she can manage, though. She seemed to have trouble focusing on just how many there were and what they were carrying.
>>
>>20558373
yes also have Trym wolfsbane in charge of it that should give us a boost maybe take Rina see what powers were granted to her
>>
>>20558432
Our Goddess likes Rina, we get her killed she might not like us very much anymore.
>>
>>20558445
true or it could send her into a berserk rage and kill all the enemy for us
>>
>>20558468
Or us. Better not find aut.

The scouts are informed of their mission and drag the log canoes up from the riverbank carefully, keeping low and watching out for spears from the other bank. It doesn't look like they can quite make the range, despite their increadible ability to throw as far as they did. Filled with grim determination, they take a handful of bows and arrows, as well as some knives, carrying the canoes downstream a way and crossing there.

Making their way stealthily through the forest, they are able to get fairly close to the enemy without being seen. Just as Chani told you, there looks to be a little less than a score of them, all armed and dressed as she described. Their skin is slightly tanned and their hair rather pale. They appear to have lines on their faces, looking like soot, or berry juice stains. They are crouched and hiding in the trees, watching the river carefully.

You currently have eight scouts in the area. What do you do?
A) Loose some arrows into the attackers and try to scatter them
B) Sneak back and report to the tribe
C) Full-on attack
D) Approach and negotiate
>>
Give these heathen scum a well deserved arrow shower.
>>
B) Then we will attack with our warriors and slaughter them in melee.
>>
>>20558619
Surround them before loosing arrows. If the attack is coming from all sides, it won't matter if there are only 4-5 actual shooters- the crossfire will make it SEEM like a larger assault. If they get away and report back to their tribe, we'll seem tougher than we are.

Also, if a couple bail, have a couple scouts track them back to their home base without getting seen, if possible. I want to know where these fuckers came from, and if this was their main force or a simple scouting party.
>>
>>20558619
They've already killed one of our own, report back, let us gather up the warriors and see how tough they are when their prey can hit back.
>>
rolled 2 = 2

Again, it's a tie. It's time for a roll-off then, in that case.
1-3 Encircle the enemy and start loosing arrows
4-6 Retreat and report back to the tribe
>>
>>20558795
Fortune Favors the unwise. It might've behooved us to send at least one person back before attempting to riddle them with arrows.
>>
The scouts start to move out and encircle the hostile spearmen. They cannot completely surround them without becoming dangerously stretched, due to their low numbers. The archers prepare to fire, readying arrows and sighting the shots...

What should their strategy be?
A) Shoot everything in their quivers. Don't leave while they still have ammo, or let the enemy escape
B) Shoot only a few shots and withdraw
C) Shoot a few shots, then charge with knives
D) Keep loosing shots, but let the enemy retreat

NOTE
As this is a relatively minor skirmish, you can keep this degree of control over the fight. In pitched battles, things will operate very differently.
>>
A) try to leave a few alive so we can interrogate them
>>
D) Let them go. When they will attack again we will be better prepared.
>>
>>20558902
D.

Much as I'd prefer a total slaughter, I'm pretty sure we can't win against a score of the bastards if they try their luck against us.
>>
>>20558902
Hmm... Maybe B) for now. If any appear to be a 'leader' of sorts, take that guy out first. Emphasize concealment and stick to the shadows. Once they know we're around, they'll probably try to take us out. When they do, we can just pick them off easy.
>>
>>20558923
>>20558948
Wait a goddamned second.

WHY ARE WE GIVING THE GUYS WITH POWERFUL RANGED ATTACKS ROOM TO REGROUP AND FIGHT BACK?

C it is. I'm gonna miss the guys, but right now we've gotta fight with Knives.
>>
>>20559045
They've also got axes and shit, as well as knives of their own. And there are 18 of them, against a scouting party. Not clear on how many scouts exactly, but it's probably a small group to not be noticed unless they want to be.
>>
The arrows fly! At this kind of range, the scouts, used to hunting deer in the forest, can be very accurate for the first few shots. Five of the enemy drop before they realise they're under attack! Those that survive immediately react, shouting in a foreign tongue as they dash into cover. A few of them start to exchange fire with the scouts, but the throwing spears they use mean they have to expose themselves to the scouts in order to fire, while the scouts can remain fairly well hidden. Three more of the enemy are killed and one wounded, in exchange for one dead scout and one wounded.

Realising they're on the losing end of the battle, the strangers start to withdraw, running for the area the scouts had to leave open, due to their low numbers, carrying their wounded man with them.

What will the scouts do?
A) Withdraw to the tribe
B) Pursue and kill the fleeing enemy
C) Stealthily follow the enemy
D) Scout the area for any stragglers
>>
How accurate are the scouts, how fast? If they think they can kill/maim all of tem before they can retaliate, A if not, B
>>
>>20559072
Actually, I mentioned in >>20558619
that there are eight men in the scouting party. Now seven and one of the survivors is wounded.
>>
C. with extreme caution
>>
>>20559080
SLAUGHTER THEM! NO ONE ESCAPES ALIVE!

Then search the corpses for why the fuck they are here.
>>
>>20559080
How many guys do we have in the scouting party? Maybe have one guy take our wounded man back, and have the others go for C): Tailing the attackers unseen, but picking individuals off if they fall behind.
>>
B don't let them get word to their clan

Take the wounded invaders with us
>>
C) We need to know where those bastards live!
>>
>>20559099
>>20559112
Oh. Nevermind the first question, then.
>>
A. Arrows are cheap, dead enemies cheaper.
>>
>>20559080
C.

Play it careful, but we can't miss out on an oppertunity to find out where these bastards live.

On the upside, we've avenged our fallen brethren at least.
>>
Late as shit but rollin' for C.
>>
One of the surviving scouts falls back to the canoes, helping the injured man with him. The remaining five scouts carefully tail the survivors through the forest. The enemy stops briefly, pulling aside a pile of autumn leaves to reveal several stiched leather bags. They hastily hang these over their shoulders and start running again. They seem to have a lot of stamina and before long, it becomes clear that they aren't going to stop. The scouts have no supplies with them, whereas it's safe to assume that the enemy does, so they are forced to give up the pursuit. The enemy seems to be heading for the malachite-rich area of the hills however, near the open grassland.

The scouts withdraw to the tribe and are greeted warmly by their families, although there is a great deal of grieving for those who died in the attack and the small skirmish on the far bank.

Some of the elders question whether the planned festival is still tasteful, given these events. Will the tribe go ahead, or change plans?
>>
>>20559278
Make festival in honor of the fallen scout.
>>
Continue but with tribute to our fallen
>>
>>20559278
If we cancel Salmonfuckingmas, the Terrorists will win!

Celebrate, but keep an eye out for attackers. And until further notice any more excursions out of the village need to be armed or escorted by someone who is.
>>
>>20559278
Roll on with it except now we honor the memory of our fallen comrades and commend the bravery of our returning scouts for saving our village from the uncalled for hostilities of an unknown people.
>>
>>20559329
> Salmonfuckingmas
> Think about how that sounds
> Stop inserting your fetishes into my game

The festival goes ahead, with the bravery of the scouts being toasted with the last of the berry liqueur. The two fallen are remembered and mourned deeply, the first of the tribe to be slain not by animals or mishap, or by old age, but by human cruelty. The attack leaves a foul taste in everyone's mouth, but the drink and food help wash it away somewhat.

It is worth noting that there is no division of labour in the tribe right now. No-one has a dedicated job, as it were. People do whatever is needed of them. The 'hunters' can change daily, as sometimes people hunt, other times, they build, or fish, or scout.

Suppose we keep on that. Leaving out the sick and wounded (and we really need to do something about those wounded) but train everybody how to fight in case things like this happen again?

I mean, I kind of like the sound of everybody doing what's needed of them.

lets train the village to function as a militia and designate the most successful (male) hunters as true warriors

The issue with the system of everyone doing anything that's needed is that there's no specialisation. 'Jack of all trades, master of none'. But then, with this population level, there isn't really much ability to specialise anyway.

Just going to say this much: The Romans feared fighting the ancient Germans, not because of their men, they'd faced barbarian men before in Gaul and Britain... It was because of their women! Seriously, going by the Roman reports, those were some SERIOUSLY scary broads. Also, for the sake of this game, I am not imposing any difference on women, as opposed to men, unless the tribe creates one culturally.

There is a majority to take care of the wouned, so far. The second action is still in confusion. I will give you a little longer to vote, then just roll for it, if it's confused. Either way, this will be the last action of tonight.

Let's build that watchtower

Well, for the sake of whatever Romans we've got, lets make sure we've got some nice and scary broads.

Until the tribe gets bigger, I'm okay with a lack of specialization.

Supporting the Watch Tower, I don't really want to get into a fight quite yet.

Once we make proper fortifications, It's time to start setting the bastard's village on fire and pillaging them.

In that order, it encourages raiders to do their job quickly.

And THERE'S the tie-breaker!

The village's wise men dedicate their time to healing those wounded in the attack on the rafts, curing five. Seven remain injured by the bronze throwing spears and of them, three die of their wounds.

The tribe meanwhile applies itself, building a tall and sturdy, if somewhat crude, watch tower by the river. A man or woman with a good set of eyes can see a good distance from the vantage point, even with the trees. The job is a boring one though and in winter, it's bone-chillingly cold.

From the 70 maxims of highly effective mercenaries, Maxim number 1: Pillage first, then burn.

And that's all for tonight folks! I feel like we got a reasonable amount done today! I hope you all enjoyed it! The next thread is at 4:30PM, EST, on TUESDAY. I hope to see you all there! Now if you'll excuse me, I have an alien ship to crash. Then I've just got to find my way home and figure out the rules for mass combat. I have a feeling we'll be needing them! Goodnight, /tg/!
