So I was dicking around on Kickstarter, checking out various deals and ideas, when I found this: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1395306345/games-save-the-world

This kid's making a card game, about motherfucking crab fighting. This might be the most adorable thing I've seen in a long time, but then I realized the broader implications.

What if it's good? Like really, truly good? Funding this project isn't just getting you a silly card game, it setting the path of a child down a road towards game development, with a passion and remembering how the internet helped him make his dream come true.

The little guy's One Of Us, and let's be honest: you've wasted 15 bucks on something worse than a child's dream.

No, tg's done that a bit.
These guys made a solid and original game that they are getting published.
The concept looks cool, too. I'd fund if I had any moneys.

Enough of that. What does everyone expect the other crabs to look like?

>>
So this looks both utterly adorable, and like a really good idea. Investing in the future of creative and entrepreneurial kids like this just feels awesome.

Trouble is, I'm a britfag. I have no idea what the international shipping would be, so I'm not sure how much extra I should pledge. Anyone have any general ideas?
>>
>>20585300
im sure there has to be something on the kickstarter page concerning international orders
>>
I'm gonna have to bump this, so the rest of /tg/ can see the awesome.
>>
This is the best game I've ever seen on /tg/. Funded it, and you should too.
>>
>>20585300
Depends on what you get, contact them and find out.
>>
>>20585300
From what I remember of ordering books from Amazon.com, standard international shipping from there is somewhere like... 7-8 dollars I think.
I pledged 10 dollars extra for shipping, to be on the safe side. There's no way a card game should cost more than ten bucks to ship, unless they inscribe it on lead plates or something.
>>
Jesus that's adorable.

I can go a day without starbucks.
>>
>people saying they're pledging and the total remaining the same
That's pretty depressing.

I am the Dad from Games Save the World and I was wondering where the increase in views came from. Y'all are awesome and we appreciate all the good stuff. Obviously, I can't show my kids this forum because I don't those calls from the teachers, but I will tell them that there are some awesome people on their side.

As an exclusive for your awesomeness, I'm including a picture, never before seen to the public, of the rough sketches of the mind building crab and the fart poison gas crab.

I don't want to get into our personal stuff on the interwebs, but I just want to let you know this business has been a game changer (yea! pun!) in his life. I couldn't be prouder.

>>
Pledged for a deck of cards. Seems interesting, and your idea of watching this company grow throughout the years intrigues me greatly OP.
>>
What is this dad doing on 4chan?

Dad I'm guessing you're the op, huh?
>>
>>20584312
I can play this game too OP: what if his "success" just goes to his head and in his self absorbed and arrogant hubris he becomes complacent with his perceived success rather than motivated, and ultimately never does anything with himself. It'd be all your fault and all it would have taken is $15 to ruin a child's entire future.

I think the more important thing to take away from all this is that regardless of whether or not this game or any game is ever a success and whether or not you contribute anything, everything, or nothing to any of it, nothing you do will ever matter. You'll never be a driving force of change in the world. Ever.
>>
>>20589425

>>
>>20589205
I think it's great that you're doing this, and I'd really like to back it, but if you're still here, then as an interested party outside the USA, I'd like to ask you to consider stating a specific amount to add to the pledge for international shipping. This is how most kickstarters I've seen do it, and there's really no way I can have any idea what
>"the difference between local shipping and what it would cost to send it"
actually is. There's literally no way for me t even make a reasonable estimate, because I have no idea how big and/or heavy the game is expected to be, what company you'll ship it with, etc. All these factors are things you guys can estimate on your end, but I really can't on mine, because i just don't have the info.
I'm in for the $2, and I'd like to get the actual game, but being asked to make a wild guess and risk not paying enough to get the game shipped to me is something I'd rather avoid.

Y'all are awesome. After I told them about the interest coming from here, they both jumped out of bed and grabbed their monster crab shirts and got ready for school with no fuss. You guys are making my parenting easier!

For those inquiring about overseas shipping, just add an extra $10. I can't see how a deck of cards could be more than that to ship. We'll post that on our FAQ.

For the poster who thought i was the op: i was wondering where we were getting a pop in hits from and I googled our company name in quotes. Google will let you just search the past day or past hour. Y'all showed up.

Jesus Christ.

I started this thread on a whim after seeing AC-Guy post about it on twitter, and it's gone up a thousand dollars since then.

Was.... was that me? Did I do that?

Did I just do a good thing?

/tg/, I can't stop smiling. My face hurts, and it's starting to scare me.
>>
>>20584312
This is why I love /tg/. We may rage, we may get into tangential arguements that kill threads and we may troll eachother but when we get down to it, it's good people. Look at how much this kickstarter has gone up, and think about the impact this is gonna have on these kids. Even if this fizzles on them in the long run, these kids are gonna remember this and the kindness of strangers for the rest of their lives.
Good job /tg/. You make me proud to be a grognard.
>>
>>20598639
To be fair, one day down the line the kids are going to find their way here and bring their game with them. And we will probably call them faggots. Because this is 4chan.

I hope that doesn't happen though. I really do.
>>
>>20598608
I think you singlehandedly made certain that this would get funded.

I think I'll actually really enjoy this game. It's astoundingly simple, but also really cute. I think my female friends would adore the shit out of this game. It's kind of like a gateway drug to, say, Magic.

The only other kind of game I have in this style is a Mercedes card game I got with my car. That shit does not fly with the women.
I have some Donald Duck stuff too but apparently the rules to that are too complicated, but they were pretty comprehensive and fun for something that was free.

You. Yes, you. You are a hero. AC-Guy did good deeds by tweeting it, but you made it a thousand times better by spreading the word.

Guys, Bones cracked three million dollars because of the collective geek community, in which /tg/ played not a small role.

Here's the deal: We've got 16 days left, and 15 bucks is a cheap buy in.

How big do you gentlemen think we can make this, if we all got behind this project? I don't mean just donating some money, I mean lets take this to every geek site we can get our hands on, and see what becomes of it.
>>
>>20598608

>>
Remember that dream you had when you were a kid, /tg/? Did you ever fulfill that dream?
>>
>>20598682
I think we'd have to bring it to Reddit.
Oh don't look at me that way. Reddit's not.. that bad okay that made me cringe, and it has a huge following with loads of dosh.

I just read through the updates, and boy, he's actually teaching the kids how to run a business. Here's an excerpt:
"One of the hardest things to do is to go to people who are not expecting you and try to sell them on your product. Now image it from the viewpoint of someone just over 4 feet looking up? I made it a point to stand back and let Tobin do all the talking. To be honest, he was very nervous and a little bit shy. But, I couldn't have been prouder. We worked a few practice runs where I played the manager and we had to work on his volume and his shyness. In each place, he asked the person at the counter for the manager. When a person in charge appeared, he explained his game and his company and asked if they would post one of his flyers. Tobin needs to get some more experience talking to managers, but each time we talked over the conversation and he improved each time. The best part was he was willing to keep doing this even though he was very nervous because he knew the business needed this. He didn't quit."

Little guy's got guts.

This is why I refuse to accept when children act like idiots. Because they have the potential to be so much more.
>>
>>20598682

>How big can we make this game?

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

Since I apparently kick-started (heh) this shit on accident, I'm genuinely curious as to how much we can do.

I used to think I was going to be a lawyer or accountant, because damn it, that's what my parents said were good jobs. Now I'm getting a technical education, probably going to go into nanomechanics or bionics or particle physics or anything related to SCIENCE!

There's just no way of knowing what you'll think decades from now.

It's always difficult to estimate (much less know) the impact of 4chan. Might as well have been Board Game Geek -- 4chan doesn't make hyperlinks to external sites (unless you're using an extension) so a webmaster wouldn't immediately know where all the new hits are coming from (unless Google indexed the 4chan thread before it 404'd and it showed up in a search).

I'd like to buy into the idea that 4chan and /tg/ have some significant market and cultural influence, but it is really impossible to ever know.

Maybe we'll get a better idea when the Bones start shipping in.

Fuck back to /v/. /tg/ doesn't irrationally hate Reddit just because ragecomics took off there. To be honest, ragecomics were more popular on /b/ and shit, I'd reckon, before they came to Reddit.
Furthermore, Reddit hates that shit. I went to their circlejerk subboard (I don't know why they have one), and it was just /v/-style ironic shitposting.

By trying to make fun of Reddit, they do exactly what Reddit does, except they don't realize that.

I don't even use Reddit, because the fanbase is obnoxiously incompetent (which happens when there are so many people, just look at /v/ and /b/), but just hating it without a reason is retarded.
>>
>>20598882
You're right, I don't irrationally hate reddit because of ragecomics. I hate Reddit because it's a terrible website, with an appalling quality control system, an awful layout and a creepy tolerance for creepy fucks that goes far beyond 4chan's.

Seriously, Reddit is fucking awful. If you actually like Reddit, please fuck off back there forever.
>>
>>20598882
but there is reason. they attach themselves to things and then identify that thing with their group. only the most retarded people on 4chan use it as a major identifier. many redditors identify as such. if this gets funded largely by reddit, they will overplay it and make it obnoxious before running it into the ground.

Hey, I've seen spacedicks. I know how fucked up that shit is.

I also know that if you judged the entire thing based on a few subreddits, you'd be a hypocrite for browsing /tg/.

The quality control system is stupid, yes. This is why I prefer /tg/, and always will. The rest of 4chan pretty much has no quality control, though, which is why shitposting is the norm everywhere else.
Hating a website for its layout is kinda weird, and certainly nothing to hate its users for. Do you hate people who write in QWERTY as well? That's ergonomically shit.
The creepy tolerance is here as well, don't think it isn't.
It's just not on /tg/.

>>20599154
Or we could archive it on suptg. It's already archived on foolz, but it never hurts to double-back.
>>
>>20599171
Not really. I have the feeling that J-List is the only sponsor just because other people aren't really interested in advertising here. I remember at one point a few years back, Moot was looking for new advertisers for the banner ads.

Every site needs advertisers, it isn't really "outside influence", it's not like Redditads determine how the site is run. Most of them are from smaller subreddits looking to get more members. Or something, I usually run adblock. In fact, for all I know until my other computer broke, 4chan might have had someone different than J-list...

Basically, when I see people complaining about Reddit on 4chan (or vice versa), chances are they don't actually understand how the other site works and bitch about it from a place of ignorance. I've been on both.

And OH MY FUCKING GOD, NOW I REMEMBER WHY I HADN'T BEEN TO 4CHAN IN A WHILE.

I'm interested to hear about the mechanics more than anything. I mean, the minimum recommended age is 3 so I'm not expected Machiavellian plotting going on, but it would be nice to know how the game works beyond the basic description on the page. How "offense and defense" work mechanically, for example, because right now it sounds like there's a definite set power level for each of the crabs. I'm wondering if attack and defense affects the cards battle total, like maybe some crabs get more for defending than for attacking.

IF they decided to pursue this further and make some expansions, it could become a really fun game.
>>
>>20599190

You get amazing threads that tell you how to build amazing things and then you get shit like 'how do I melt down gold and into what to hide it in my house/should I build a secret room for my gold' or 'I want to live in my van for a year because my gf kicked me out, how do' or my personal favourite, 'how do I make homemade weapons to stop this street gang kicking my ass every day'.

It's pretty simple, actually. You basically mention either attack, defense without knowing which crab you get, and the one with the highest number wins. In the event of a tie, the elemental combat decides who wins.
It's literally as simple a game as you can make. You're not getting a good game here, this is basically a donation.
>>
>>20599267

Try going to a specific subreddit and posting this, maybe even on /r/magictcg. You'd get plenty of people willing to help and not be too cocky about it.

Nothing will stop you from dealing with captcha. Moot has said on numerous occasions that captcha is a permanent addition, because it eliminates almost all spam.

Captcha became permanent after turning it off for five minutes caused the frequency of spammers to spike by four and five digit percentages. Moot don't like it, but if it's stupid and it works, it's not stupid.

4chanX won't turn that off, but it will allow you to hide threads, posts by users, track threads, it auto updates, and about 50 other features that I don't use.

Kickstarter takes 5% in fees, and Amazon takes three-to-five percent in fees. So, there's your lesson #1: the cost of doing business.

Make the kids pay for promotional material like shirts and whatever. They will quickly learn that a quarter is nothing. Lesson #2.

Making 500 decks of cards isn't cheap. Sure, they can make a profit, but they need to invest that money. Lesson #3: you need to have money to make money.

Once you have your merchandise and have satisfied your investors, you need to make a profit and move your product. Lesson #4: THE RIDE NEVER ENDS.

>>20599908
Ah. Well, in that case I'd tell them to give tabletop games a try, and if /tg/ still exists to come check us out.
>>
>>20599497

Yeah no, typing "nigger" is way faster than that bullshit
>>
>>20600065

But typing nigger as the second word does not work anymore. You have to type out BOTH words as close as they appear. And even then one letter the computer deems " incorrect " will make you type in another capcha.

Playing a 5 second game is way faster unless you're a typing speed demon.
>>
>>20600107

I'm doing it and it works.
>>
>>20600107
No you have to type two words, but one word can still be inaccurate. I type 'bleh'.
>>
>>20600107
>Playing a 5 second game is way faster unless you're a typing speed demon.
Incidentally, how fast do you have to be to be this? I type at 100wpm, but I have no idea if that's professional standard or not. Touch typing.
>>
>>20600065

I typically spend a little time refreshing captcha several times before I finally get a result that is not cut in half. Then how often it yells at me because I could't tell if that was an 'r', an 'm', two 'n's, and so on.

That game may be a bit difficult, but at least it is not infuriating, especially on someone with poor eye sight.

My only major gripe about that game thing, is I would take forever to realize it was a spam prevention system tied to the comment box, instead believing it is some kind of ad!

wow, and I got the capthca wrong trying to post this message... dang thing tricked me into thinking they wanted 'admit' when it was really 'odmit'
>>
>>20600193
According to ye olde Wikipedia, average for pro typists (as in, people who make money doing that shit) are 50-80wpm. So you're good.
>>
>>20600251
Last time I checked, I was at 70 WPM or so. Sounds about right.
>>
>>20600251
I'm glad wasting my time online has given me a professional level of ability in a low-wage field.
>>
>>20600262
Leverage that shit, write a novel. Paranormal romance is crazy popular right now, you could churn out a series no problem. Just remember to make the female characters extremely plain and average-looking and the men hot and abusive and you'll make bank.
>>
>>20600312
People seem to recommend writing erotic short stories and selling them as downloads more.
>>
>>20600312
Or, if you want to cater to men, make the women submissive, and the men mary-sue
>>
>>20600333
By men here, I mean faggots.

But males, regardless.
>>
>>20600312
And if he doesn't like the idea of becoming the monster, he can write a layer of meaning hidden behind the pathetic plot and characters, a satire of modern paranorms and romance.

Or he could realize getting a book published is kinda like roulette.
>>
>>20600351
Self-publishing and viral marketing. It'd make him more money than faffing around 4chan all day.

>>20600333
Do men buy and read romance? Apart from the funny time-traveling viking stuff?
>>
>>20600384
Here's a better idea:
Write smut. Write whatever the fuck kind of smut you want. Fetishistic, vanilla, weird creepy shit? Doesn't matter.
Now take the non-smut parts of your smut -- things like "plot" and "characters" and "setting" -- and make them interesting in their own right.
In fact, make them just as, if not more engaging than the smut itself.

Write smut that someone will fap to, finish, and then _keep reading_ because they want to see where the story goes next.

AND IT WILL BE AWESOME. GO FORTH AND DO THIS IN THE NAME OF /TG/.

Seriously though, why does nobody ever write stuff like this? I can only think of like, two examples off the top of my head.

the derailment in this thread is thick

You kind of have to search around, but it exists on erotica sites. As with all things in life you've just gotta wade through the ocean of crap first.

To be fair, it happens a lot. And it usually turns out pretty interesting.
>>
>>20600107
No, it still works. It used to be you could just do the control word and a space. Now you have to type the control word and the unknown. Which still lets you type slurs. The entire point is that the second word is unknown by the computer.
>>
We go from being good deed shit getting done /tg/ to talking about erotic novels and making money off smut on a thread that a dad was considering to show his kids
>>
>>20601823

Well, let no one say that they won't be getting the pure, unfiltered /tg/.

That said, assuming they're still going to read through this shit when they're older, it's a really rare thing to actually go out and try to accomplish your goals and dreams rather than sit and do nothing like 99% of the world. Any attempt, even from someone so young, has to be commended. I sincerely hope that this is only the beginning for you guys.
>>
>>20601823

At least they're getting an accurate picture of their audience.

Though if the dad's as smart as he seems to be, he'll stop scrolling down at about >>20599385

I am only mildly ashamed of my involvement in the matter.

Tobin and Griffin.
Now you're 12, or 16 or whatever age your dad decided that you're old enough to meet the internet in its wonderful and horrible whole (although he'd probably prune the worst or tangential parts), you can get a simple life advice that your dad has probably said to you many times.

Pursue your passion.

Don't just wait for something to fall into your lap, go and actively pursue it. Nothing begets nothing.
Make sure that whatever you're chasing is your passion and not your dad's, your mom's, your brother's or your friend's or anyone else's.
And finally, don't just chase an interest, or what you think you like, find out what you're passionate about. Do lots of different things so you can find out what you're truly passionate about, so you can pursue that dream.

And don't forget to be nice to people.

r/magictcg is terrible at Magic, though.
Like, even worse than /tg/ before anyone knew the rules.

If you do not remember Magic discussion on this board pre-AAJ, I envy you.

I guess Dad can just filter out all the crap if he wants to show it to his kids. I'm all for free speech and OPINIONS and whatever, but being exposed to 4chan vitriol is probably bad for young kids.

Unless that means 1100-onwards instead of 1000-onwards, I don't see the big problem. Granted, I didn't check that link, so maybe there are other factors that I'm not seeing
>>
>>20605647
>Vikings after 10th century
>>
>>20605665
You mean Kievan Rus?
>>
>>20605665
Well, that depends on whether you define the tenth century as 900-1000 or 1000-1100. 'Cause the age of vikings is commonly considered to have ended in 1066 after the failed invasion of England.
>>
>>20605703
That's a common misconception then.

Because fuck, Christians aren't allowed to be vikings, and a large part of Scandinavia turned Christian with Harald Bluetooth and Gorm the Elder.

Holy Crap tg

Remember when you/me/we still had fertile imaginations and ideas about how we would make games that would make people happy?

These kids are actually living it. And they are obviously switched on, its a pretty darn good game by the looks.

If we give them 3700 now, they can produce this game.

But what about 5000? 10000? 100000?

@ Kids Dad: Help the kids look in to stretch goals. Lots of successful kickstarters recently use stretch goals. For instance you could add a new card to the deck for every 500 dollars raised over the goal. Or other perks/prizes.

Thanks for clarifying the international shipping thing.
You're already funded, and it won't do nearly as much as this thread, but as a video game developer, I'm linking your kickstarter on our game's forums to try to get a little extra attention to it, I hope it helps.
You're awesome.
