NEW PLAYERS WELCOME, NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

Welcome to Part VI, Chapter IX of the Fortune: Evolution game/quest. After this brief intro, a guide for new comers will be provided.

To returning players, welcome back. The region we're playing now is the deep oceanic trench known as the "Abyss". Here there is little light, no plant-life, and tremendous water pressure. It is cold and dark for the most part. Creatures survive on what little food they can find. It's an alien-eat-alien world down here, and only the best survive Mother Nature's unending gauntlet that is day-to-day survival, miles from the ocean's surface. The forces of natural selection and adaptation are marvelous though, and who knows what strange creatures such a harsh environment will produce?

That will be up to you, the players. The "Fortunates" as I have dubbed you/them.
>>
If you're just joining us, welcome. This is a world-building/setting discussion of a planet called Fortune.

The game involves "evolving" various species of plants or animals. There is no win condition, so to speak, the goal is to create an interesting setting.

Various organisms are presented for the players in the form of images. The players can then change those organisms by editing the image and then posting it. A player can do one of two things with their new edited image. It can be posted as an evolution of the previous creature, meaning that the previous creature is now replaced by the new one; alternatively, the player can designate their new image as a newly emerged subspecies of the previous image, meaning the creatures in both images are now present on the world. This is called a split or a branch-off.

Once the edited image containing the creature is posted, and so long as no one raises any objections to it, the critter then becomes part of the developing "canon" of the game, and other players can edit and evolve it too. At various, arbitrary times, the GM (that's me) will respond with results of the adaptation, as well as introducing random effects in the world in the interest of "shaking things up". If you like, you could even include cause/effect and results in your post, if you like.

The better your justification and/or explanation for an evolution, the more we like it, so don't be afraid to go into great detail as to the ecological pressures that engendered such changes. This is by no means neccesary, but don't worry, we won't be tl;dr-ing anyone. Get as detailed as you like.
As a rule of thumb, go for small, subtle changes rather than big ones. Try not to "direct" the creatures towards some kind of end result (eg. I'm going to turn them into Pokemanz!), just let them become a sort of mish-mash created by everyone (eg. I imagine that the low temperatures would favor those creatures that possesed thick fur). Let the critters be a community effort, you know? If something feels cheesy or unrealistic to you, say so, we're all Anons here anyway, so enjoy the freedom to speak your mind. It'll engender discussion and help polish the world to a fine sheen (so to speak).

Now, while I encourage you all to be creative, there are a few things I'll just toss out from the get go.

Joke Creatures
> (Eg) This creature is so flexible, it can kiss it's own ass!

Fetish Fuel
> (Eg) These animals reproduce by rape.

Comic-Book Science
> (Eg) Fell from a meteor, exposed to cosmic rays.

Blatant Rip-Offs
> (Eg) Bikachu, the electromagnetic rodent is yellow becuase it eats the fruit of the Super Sayain plant, which produces orange fruits called Dragonballs.

There's plenty of leeway on the drawings, not everyone's an artist, we get that. But if you just gave a camel robotic wings and lazer vision? Well, somebody's gonna call you out. This *is* 4chan, after all. Write something that's readable and makes sense and there won't be any problems. Most creatures are accepted, so unless I say otherwise or someone objects, the lack of a response should be taken as approval.

If you want to know anymore, I've included my address in the e-mail field, or you can ask one of our players (I'm sure some of our regulars are lurking under the mask of Anonymous). They will likely be happy to answer your questions, assuming I don't get to them. We've also got a 1d4chan page, it includes a link to our previous threads. These are just there if you're curious, so don't feel like you need to read them to be able to play now. Relax, you don't.

This is also where I'll post the scheduled dates (both month and day) for the next episode of the game. As soon as the current thread (Part 6-9) is over, the date for Part 6-10 will be posted at the top of the wiki page.

The whole thing is still a work in progress, so if you see something missing from the main article or subsections, don't be shy about lending a hand. This *is* only my downtime after all, and like most adults, I've only got so many hours in the day.

Lastly, do quote/link to the creature that you're evolving, if you're evolving critter A into critter B, then use that "quote" button and link the damn post, it makes it so much easier for me when I'm trying to follow the line of descent when time comes for the next game.

Well, I've rattled on long enough, so enough pussyfooting around, let's get this game started! As soon as I post the starting creatures, you can have at it!

A fact I learned after introducing that rule, but that's not the point. The point of it was to discourage creepy That Guys from coming in and making a mess of things (in more ways than one, I imagine. Eww).

(Ignore the filename typo.)
These soft-bodies creatures slither along on the sea floor picking up detritus that falls from above. Morsels from bodies picked clean by predators above, other animals' waste, that sort of thing. They also scavenge on the chance they find a full-blown carcass rotting away in the depths. For now their eyes remain, though they aren't very useful in the dark.

Soft-bodies invertabrate, like it's cousin the Rock Slug.
Cold-blooded bloodsucker. Attaches to a creature with tentacles, sucking said tentacles dry. Once they real appendages wither away, the Tentaleech replaces them, using its own victim's tentacles to hide itself away.

It's all good, Stooge. Threads 404, it happens. I think I just caught everyone in the middle of a work day or something, that's all.

2-3 ft. long. Descendants of the Sand Squid of the shallows regions. Cold-blooded soft-bodied invertebrate. Unlike Earth squid, no ink sacs or suckers on their tentacles. Carnivorous. Their bright sand-brown colour would normally be a hazard, but in this lightless realm, it's not much of a big deal. The purple cone with the pink fronds on the "top" of their head/body is a sensory organ, it's a holdover from ancient days. It can sense the direction/current of the water. Perhaps this structure will find new use in the dark spaces of the trenches?

While their ancestors were much, much, larger, these carnivorous, cold-blooded, mammal-like reptiles are now only 5-7 ft. long, 10 at absolute most. There simply isn't enough food down in the trenches to fuel the sizes seen in specimens further up, especially since this variety of Aquabeast experienced a fortunate bout of atavism that resulted in water-breathing gills, meaning the beast need not come up for air like it's full-sized cousins.

Carnivorous, egg-laying, with horns, an armoured top akin to a turtle's might shell, and heat-retaining fur that is slick and smooth (much like a penguin's feathers), the Aquabeast is but one of a proud lineage of ruthelss survivors. Their frog-like tongues ensure that if a creature wants to run (er... swim) they're going to have be faster than greased lightning to escape. Of course, such an efficient predator will no doubt engender some interesting adaptations in its prey.

A *very* distant cousin to Rock Slugs, these creatures are little more than fleshy sacs with trailing, wispy tentacles, laced with toxins and bacteria. They are about 2-3 ft. in diameter, though some species can reach up 5 or even 7 feet in diameter. Their life cycle is a rather complicated process that involves the offspring getting eaten by a raveshark, living in its digestive tract, then being defecated out. After this rather ignominious childhood, the young start growing into their full size.

Last critter, for now, Fortunates. Then it shall be off to feasting (what mere mortals call "dinner").

The Nenimee is an *ancient* breed, a sedentary long-lost relative to the Deepsquids. It's a filter feeder that dines on microscopic organisms, like plankton, that drift upon the current. Since such organisms are especially numerous around the warmth of undersea vents, these creatures are especially common in those areas.

Of course, these cold-blooded, soft-bodied invertebrates are not confined solely to such areas. A Nenimee is happy as long as its got a rock to latch onto.

For eons, the Nenimee had it rather easy, though now the Abyss is much more crowded than it once was, and these immobile creatures are falling to the predations of the newly arrived fish that now swim in waters it once shared with little else. Whether by camouflage, armour, or some other mechanism, this sitting duck has got to get evolvin', and fast!

Note the grey patch in the center. While the Nenimee's ancestor's had a central eye (as its Deepsquid kin still does), such a structure was superflous in the lightless Abyss, so it atrophied, and the creature is now blind.

Small infared absorbing speckles start appearing on the aquabeasts while this seems like ineffective camouflage on such a large animal in good lighting conditions, it renders it near invisible in the dimly lit and thermal lighting of the trenches.

Hey guys. First time poster. Here goes.

>>20679956

As the shock organ of the Abyssal Raveshark evolves so does their ability to sense electrical pulses in the water. This soon leads to the development of bands of emitters protruding from the skin of the Raveshark along the primary fins and tail. Each band of emitters is able to release electrical pulses of varying strength resulting in simple communication between the sharks. With this increased communication comes an increased ease of locating a mate.

This mutation replaces the current Abyssal Raveshark.

Aimlessly drifting is all well and good when you're a massive plankton-hoover, but what do you do when there's no plankton around? You go find more.
The redundant central fin of the Finleech has become sensitive to chemical stimuli produced by mass quantites of plankton and gives the Finleech a fighting chance at locating food.
They steer by shutting off the jets on one side of their "mouth", a cumbersome method of turning with a very large turning circle, though in the great distances they travel it does the job.

Its good for prey to be unable to see you, but how will you find a mate? Aquabeasts evolve to resolve this, and another issue

The horns on the sides of their faces now sweep backwards, creating less drag, and serving an important purpose. They can now be vibrated, putting out low frequency sounds that travel for miles, allowing Aquabeasts to communicate, and let members of the other gender know where they are

The Tentalor evolves a new way of feeding itself, by advancing the symbiotic relationship further with its host. After replacing a host's tentacle, and the establishment of the neural interface, the Tentalor looses its feeding needle, instead it develops an organ, which functions as a placenta like structure, feeding the creature directly from the bloodstream and ensuring better chemical synchronization.

Choosing to wait, instead of searching and attacking their prey, few Deepsquids began evolving different kind of features to follow their new life style of hiding beneath the bottom of the sea, inside small caves or around dull, huge rocks. Such changes split the new organism of Pentmollusk from it’s, now, cousin – Deepsquid. The color of their skin became duller and much darker, allowing mollusks to hide and blend among the terrain. Tentacles grew longer and much thinner than such of Deepsquid, in order to make them a fast and deadly trap.

Text only update.

Not all of the Finleeches took to mobility. Some of them, taking advantage of the feasts near undersea vents, decided to stay immobile. When their parents died, the young found that growing to great sizes was achievable, due to the sediment, enriched by mummy 'n daddy's corpses. Talk about a dedicated parent, right?

Anyway, the Finleeches of this lineage become as trees, a secluded grove in the dark, a forest of night at the bottom of the sea.

Figured this planet could do with a weird, alien, ecosystem.

the electrical abyssal raveshark has gotten a little more streamlined, and fatty. Schooling with other Stun tunas it will surround larger prey or even schools of shade snakes and stun them to death.

The abyssal rave shark has continued to stubbornly hold onto eyes, developing a strong sense of sight in the dark. it looks so darn cute too, and part of its skull is used for ramming other creatures into unconsciousness.

The shadesnake has developed a keen sense of "hearing" or vibrational sense.

Larger, faster, more powerful. The Aquabeast is descendent of the demolisher lineage. This means it stores ATP in its fat, and has "burst" energy for long periods of time. The vascular system of the creature has essentially a thin gravy for blood, a mixture of plasma, blood cells, and cholesterol. The cholesterol is kept into micro beads by a special enzyme, then serves to trap oxygen. This means the creature has a massive reserve of 02 at its disposal. Thick and simple blood vessels allow it to operate at an incredibly high blood pressure. Not terribly smart or graceful, it evolves towards becoming an apex solitary predator. tl/dr - the rape sub has no reverse thrust.

The vent slug exposes its mouth. its been there all along. honest. but now it will cling to rocks better, and slurp away with its quad cups. might even take the occasional chunk of meat off some carrion.

The stinger has developed a more complex series of...stingers...to...sting..with. they are quite attractive to smaller fish, looking like a safe haven.

The Vent Slug's massive size makes it difficult to crawl around. It begins to use it mouths to drag it around, growing its "gums" into separate appendages, eventually culminating in a number of legs developed from its large outer jaw.

A cluster of vents will often house a large herd of Slugs, moving around their "pasture" and grazing on whatever plankton and detritus they can find, like strange, alien cattle. They do not go far from the vents, gaining much of their nutrition from their symbiotic bacteria - however, when a significant food source like an entire corpse appears, it is not uncommon to see countless Vent Slugs swarm around it, picking it apart in a matter of minutes. They will use their extreme environment to stay safe from predators, drawing closer to the vents when approached.
