So you guys are just havin' a little fun with these zany dice superstitions right?

You're just joking around, aren't you? ...aren't you guys?
>>
A bro in my group when playing warhammer picks up his entire pile and lets them trickle back down to the table a few times before he picks out which ones he wants to roll for his tests.
Because the ones with consistently higher faces showing "are more likely" to roll high...
>>
Uh, yeah sure.

The only thing I do is 'charge' them. That's where you shake them in your hand until you've powered them up to fives or sixes, though you've got to be careful not to overcharge them and end up with ones and twos again. It's a careful balance.

Some guy who was briefly a member of our Warhammer group did this and it somehow stuck to the point where we all do it now.
>>
AN UNBELIEVER
>>
There's a guy in my group who arranges his dice around a shot of whiskey. Dice that "do well" during the session get dunked in afterward as their "reward."

Also, once a group member rolled so many 1's in one session that he put his d20 in the microwave afterward and completely liquefied it.
>>
>>20775412
See. That's what I'm talkin' about. Just havin' a good time with it, putting a bit more drama and excitement into the dice rolling process.

Good to hear you are not crazy.
>>
>>20775412
Oh and there's a guy who has a special set of dice that he only uses for important rolls.

He got into that state of being angry but trying to pretend not to when I picked one of them up once. I'm fairly certain that he threw it away later.
>>
>You're just joking around, aren't you?

Nope. My die are always placed highest side up n the table. I've got my lucky and unlucky dice.

I've got my special one that always rolls 20s or 1s. It's luck, not the fact that it's so damned old it's worn itself into a weighted position.
>>
Yes sir. There's nothing magic about dice to me. I WISH I was that crazy, sounds like a blast.
>>
Not really a superstition, but i get really ticked when I see dice rolled, and them not actually rolling. I have a freind, who isnt cheating or anyt;hign, but when he drops his dice they seem to slide rather than roll, and although I know he's not doing it deliberatly (his awfulness of rolls testafies to this) I feel annoyed and cheated somehow.
>>
>>20775511
It's the same for me when they fall off the table.

I know it makes no difference, the guy just rolls again and we never saw the original roll.

But if it's then a good roll I feel cheated, then silly for feeling that.
>>
>>20775313
Of course I am, when I roll for real I make a statisctical analysis, truncate the worst and pick what dice to roll blindly.

Why would you cheat?!
>>
They're not superstitions. The Dice Gods are fickle and terrible beings, capable of great deeds and great mischief in equal measure. All we mortals can do is appease them as best we can.
>>
ALL DICE MUST, WHEN DORMANT, BE SITTING WITH THEIR MAXIMUM VALUE FACING UPWARDS.

ALL DIE-ROLL FAILURES ARE DUE TO THE DICE MATRIX BEING INCOMPLETE.
>>
>>20775604
This is why high numbers are next to low ones.
JUST TO FUCK WITH YOU.
>>
>>20775548
Pretty much everyone I know agrees on that if a dice falls off the table, you can (and should) reroll it.

Other than shaking my dice in my hands before a roll, I don't do much with them.
Sometimes I just roll them a couple of times in the table "to be done with" some bad rolls if I rolled good just before it.
>>
>>20775564
Awful, terrible things can happen if you fail to abase yourself before them correctly.

I once rolled a miscast for every attempt to cast a spell in a game.
>>
I always keep my dice with the highest number face up.
>>
I was just reading this thread while playing Pokemon Emerald.
A fuckrare Pokemon, a Feebas, that appears randomly in six of 400 squares of the river in route 119, finally appeared while reading this thread.
So, now I'm going to prepare a ritual to the dice gods, and the RNG gods to thank them

Also, gifted dice work better than bought ones. And the ones that work the best, are the ones won in contests.
>>
Sometimes, if I'm playing an imperium army/character, I think of prayer to the emperor, I don't actually say it, but I think it pretty hard.
>>
>>20775830
6 is the favored number of Slaanesh.

You've been misdirecting your prayers.
>>
I'm not allowed to play other player's dice if we're playing with d10 - word is I'm cursed and it's contagious.

Conversely, when playing a D6 based game, everyone wants me to make their rolls, as I always tend to do great.

Superstitions are weird like that.
>>
You mean you don't sacrifice small and medium sized animals to the dice gods OP?
>>
I COLLECT SUPERSTITIONS.

NOT SO I CAN FOLLOW THEM, BUT SO I CAN DO THE OPPOSITE.

I LEAVE ALL MY DICE WITH THE 1 FACING UP, I ROUTINELY LAVISH AND PAMPER THE DICE THAT ROLL POORLY, AND SO ON.
>>
rolled 94 = 94

>>20775910
Wh... why would you reward failure!? THE DICE KNOW

Personally, I kiss my dice before important rolls and don't let anyone roll the dice I'm using but me (though that's mostly because I've always been a possessive fucker).
>>
>>20775910
SHUN THE HERETIC!
>>
>>20775910
What do you do if you're playing CoC or some other roll low game?
>>
I had 4 different sets of dice.

Each set was for something different.

One was for skill rolls of a physical nature.
Another was for skill rolls that had to do with character interactions.
The third set was my typical combat dice.
And the last set was for BBEG encounters.

If I didn't use them for their intended purposes I
swear they would roll low the rest of the night no
matter what.

It also loves the fishvore. Papa-n is high priest of the RNG.
>>

>>20776224
I was actually really hoping I'd get a 20 there. Could you imagine how that would've looked?
>>
>not kissing your dice before you roll for an important moment

how else are they supposed to know to land on the good numbers?
>>
My dice draw their power from being anointed in the still warm lifeblood of a small animal, followed by exposure to 10 hours of moonlight.

If even a shadow falls over the dice before the 10 hours is up, the dice are permenantly ruined and will never roll well when needed again. They need to be recharged about once every two months.
>>
>>20776329
They should always know.
>>
All this "sit on high numbers" stuff has me thinking.
How to transport dice without confusing them?
>>
>>20776329
You train them. That's why you roll important dice in important moments and you roll untrained dice in all the other moments.
That way, if a dice suddenly decides to try to fuck you up, you could detain it, and send it back to the dice bag.

Well, I'm my group's DM, and I've got two "DM only powerful set of dice" one is purple marble and the other is Q-Workshop's Cthulhu dice, I am the only one allowed to use them, but sometimes, when bad luck is upon my players, I let them pick one of them.
Gotta love their faces when I let them pick, many good times, last game the group's dragonborn warlord was suddenly surrounded by goblins, and decided to use his electric breath weapon, but before he could make any roll, I said "Purple, or... TENTACLES?" he picked tentacles, and got a fucking natural twenty, goblin brains splattered the room, and one third of the encounter was pretty much done in one roll.
>>

>Unfortunately, I think my dice liked it.
Oh wow.
>>
>>20776450
So use it as reward.
You're now some kind of Hu-dom for pervert dice.
>>
as a gift for dming I was given a set of faceless blank dice.

Sometimes I just roll them for all to see when we are at a plot point and a player demands a contested roll.
Of course I also have my first set of dice(mostly) and I pull those out for 'that guy' encounters. they habitually roll nat 20's and max dmg.
>>
>>20775313
I got a special set of dices for the most important rolls.
Thing i do is: I got all my dices and throw them. I carefully pick those that rolled 1 and roll them again and again. Finally am left with only a couple of dices that rolled 1 three times in a row (3 times, remember that). I lock em up in a small box where they can´t roll around and they still face the sky with their 1.
With three times rolled 1 there is no way they could roll 1 again and they usually score the best.
No superstitions, just simple math.
Also I sacrifice one black chicken before the gaming session just in case
>>
My dice luck is infamously bad in my group. So much so that one guy is convinced that I have weaponized my unluck into a gaze attack. He tries to roll where I cannot see the dice in motion.

The only superstition I have is that if I consistently get shitty rolls with my dice I buy new ones. I know it doesn't make a difference, I just get sick of seeing ones come up on the same damn. In my group I'm known as a bad roller.
>>
It bothers the fuck out of me.
>>
Not really a superstition, but I like to have my dice color coordinated to what character or army I'm playing. For 40k I have four sets of d6 in the 4 colors I paint my army. When I started a sexond army I needed to buy another cube of d6 so I could have the two colors I paint those in d6. I have special RPG dice for every major character I've played. Basically if I buy and paint a mini for it, they also get their own special colored dice I use.

This shit is where its at. I call it "heating up the dice" everyone looks at me crazy until I start rolling well. Blowing on them works well, it has to be a shot of hot quick air otherwise its worthless.

Precision dice are terribly unlucky (pic related). Without the round edge they don't roll like normal dice, they flop.

Personally I have very strict rules about my dice. They have to be standard quality dice. They must follow the standard math rule (the sum of the opposing faces must be 1 greater than the max value of the die). The faces can ONLY contain the value of the of said face (none of this intricate bullshit).
>>
>>20778319
Flopping is better than rolling. They better understand how they failed you and have an easier time getting it right.

>>
yeah imma just go right ahead and pop this bubble; not a single sane motherfucker in this thread or outside of it truly believes in any of that dice superstition crap.

However, it does kind of get inside people's brains. Like regular superstitions, it's something people can't help but think about, and are forced to constantly dismiss internally.
So for everyone it always sometimes feels a little like they believe in superstitions.

But they don't. Not if they're sane.
>>
The less you care about the roll, the better the roll will be.

As a DM, I make sure to never hope for a certain outcome. Consequently many rolls have killed characters or given to ridiculous circumstances.
>>
When I get out my dice, I put them on the 1. I found I roll better with it. Rarely have Nat 1's and almost always hit. Unless it's D100 Roll Under which I do 9, & 90.
>>
>>20775313

One of my players keeps his lucky die in a fucking briefcase. it's the one he uses when everything has been going wrong during a particular section.
And it always works.

The same player bought specific dice from me once, because they were lucky, and they never disappoint.

Another player rolled so many criticals with two specific dice of mine in MERP (back in the days when I was the only one to have dice) that he actually asked for them at his birthday. I obliged, and whenever he decides to use them, he rolls critical hits upon critical hits.

Oh and of course, speaking for myself, there was that Feng Shui campaign when I discovered by accident that I would ALWAYS get a critical hit, or a quite enormous success, when rolling my dice at the specific moment during the Kill Bill music when the beat starts.

it's been proved and documented. I had three criticals in a row against the final boss.

So I don't know OP, you tell me.

Do not be afraid, my child.
Merely have faith in the rituals of the Dice Gods, and you shall roll mighty Critical Successes.
>>
Some dice are poorly made and tend to certain rolls.

I never drop my dice on the table, i roll them. If i find my self tired or disintrested and begin "dropping" the dice, they do poorly. It is more a matter of their initial position influencing the out come than anything else.

If i find a dice does really good or really bad "all the time" it is effectively loaded, and I throw it away.. no one wants to deal with loaded dice.
>>
I blow on my dice for good rolls. However, overusing this leads to bad rolls.

Oh, and saying "dubs get" when trying to roll doubles inevitably curses you. Never do it.
>>
You must have your dice and your dice bag blessed to show favor from the Dice Gods.
Also sacrifices of small animals are needed to recharge them.
>>
You're all wrong, you know that right? What you're meant to do is put the dice up on a different side every day. So Saturday, it's a 1, then Sunday 2, then Monday 3 and so on. This restores balance to them, so that on game night you will be more likely to roll successes, due to the Dice Gods looking upon you with favour.
>>
As a perma-DM, my superstitions have become my group's superstitions. Among them :

-Dice should always be kept in a handmade bag, even if that bag is just a hankie tied in a knot. My wife originally crocheted me a bag, but has made one for each long-term member of the group, in colors of their request

-When out of the bag, dice should be stored "1" side up, to disperse all the "1" energy before you roll it.

-All dice bags must contain a minimum of 1 coin, preferably a Susan B. Anthony.

Finally, the group has founded a tradition. Some years ago, when we were playing at our flgs, We were setting up for the first session of a new campaign, and I casually said "I should get a new set of dice." One of my longest players actually stood up and offered to pay for them, quoting all the times I'd bought drinks and whatnot. I got a sweet new glossy set of chessex dice, that try as I might could NOT roll well against the player that purchased them, for the rest of the freaking campaign.

Goblin rogue slicing from the shadows? Nat.1.

Elven archers raining poison tipped darts from the walls? 8 attacks, nothing higher than a 6.

BBEG trying to grapplefuck the barbarian? Butterfingers.

Since then, every new campaign begins with my players getting together and buying me a new set of dice, and somehow only the ones that chipped in end up with weakass opponents. You're not considered a real member of our circle until you've tithed to the dice gods.
>>
Whenever there's a break, I roll until I get 5 bad rolls in a row. The next roll is usually good.
>>
I don't do any of this stuff, that said in a game of 3.5 I rolled four Natural Ones in a row and died.
>>
Don't touch my pearl/gold dice. Those are mine. You can use the bag of assorted dice- stop trying to touch MY dice.
>>
>>20782079
That's what you get for angering the dice gods.
>>
>>20782079
Your lack of faith in the Dice Gods is disturbing.
>>
Several poorly rolling d20s are cursed to live forever in a hole in the wall of a basement classroom in an old building at Princeton.

They know what they did. Let them be an example for all the others.
>>
One of our players wanted to run Shadowrun, and my DM was ecstatic to finally be able to play, but when we sat down and learned Shadowrun he was a little put off by the system, since even though he tried to build a character to succeed, he just ended up with a big fat dice pool that still allowed him to fail, even critically. We were all plagued by this problem, and another player started rolling one at a time, claiming it was more likely to succeed. Usual DM, grounded in reality and logic, raged over this...

...Until he started doing it. Then he raged more because it was true. What usually gave him 1-2 successes (minus all the 1s) now gave him up to 10. It's hilarious to watch him roll his huge dice pool just because of how mad he gets.

We've started doing it with a dice tower, too, and he's even more mad.
>>
>>20775313
I don't care about magical thinking superstitions, but it really pisses me off when people escalate to rage and threats because you touched their die.
Not because "IT'S THEIR PROPERTY" which is still a little overboard, but at least you can see the basis for it.
No, they snap because "YOU HAVE TAINTED THE LUCK FLUX IN THE FORTUNE CAPACITORS! THESE ARE DARK TIMES!"

Please people, line up your lucky lighters, favourite bingo dabber, and troll dolls. Blow on them, kiss them, slip them the tongue. Whatever.
But try to keep that little slice of crazy you've decided to entertain internalized when interacting with other people.
>>
The only thing that I do that even sort of resembles a dice superstition is I prefer playing with gifted dice and I freely gift people dice so that they can too.
>>
Whenever I have to make an important roll, I roll three dice of that kind, then take whichever rolled the highest and make the actual roll with it.

Sometimes I take the one with the lowest roll, just in case.
>>
My new policy is the wolf cup.

We have a small cup with a picture of a wolf on it that everyone must roll in.
You pick up whatever dice you are rolling, cover the top of the cup with your hand, shake it, then place it on the table.

Once the dice have stopped moving and the wolf cup is placed firmly on the table you can remove your hand and look at your dice.

No cheating and no dropped dice!
>>
>>20778403

The biggest superstition I have is that the rolls are more random if I don't know which die I have until it leaves my hand. I reach into my dice bag (actually a pocket in my backpack) and pick one blindly. Sometimes I just grab the first one, but other times I find multiple before taking one out.

Alternately, I find that picking dice that match the theme of your character tend roll better. I have a set of blue/green d6's with gold pips, these are my Tropical dice I bought for Shadowrun to play my Hawaiian troll. That character never glitched.
