Ignoring the confused looks of hurrying crewmen, you take a moment to reset. A few deep breaths later, you feel better. A lot has happened today: diving to the darkest depths, fighting a swarm of giant squid, surfacing in the middle of a battle, and nearly being caught in the crossfire between two Martian forces. With the help of a (confused) Witch flying overhead, you've managed to reach the damaged destroyer from which you originally launched: the Yukikaze. Now that you're here, however, you're not quite sure what you should do.

You could try to get back into the action, but the Harbinger has already re-submerged; on the way down, it smashed one of the new Martian ships, probably adding to its already considerable damage. In addition, you've been at it all day; your magical reserves are nearly tapped from holding back water pressure for extended periods of time. That unexpected Martian fleet is still around, but with the arrival of the bulk of your allies, you can probably afford to recuperate. Besides, the remnants of the flotilla are already disengaging.

Before you left, the acting commander, whom you don't seem to get along well with, had an incident with several of the more lax sailors under her command. When you inquired, she had denied any such thing. She might be commanding the Yukikaze right now, but it might be worth it to revisit the subject. Or not; it's not like she's your friend or anything. Either way, you might be able to get more information on the state of battle from her.

Socks is still available via psionic link (one of these days, you'll sit down with him and try to figure out how the hell that link works). You might be able to try and figure out what the hell is going on with the Martians in more detail by working with him.

Or you could go for the most appealing option right now: do nothing. You're tired, cold, and even a spartan bunk would be comforting at the moment. You're not quite alright with the idea of sleeping when a battle's raging nearby, though, no matter how much you've done already.

Launching while worn out just wouldn't be smart, Naomi Ito is probably busy commanding and you don't want to distract her with a battle so close by, and just hitting the hay during all this wouldn't sit right with you. You decide you need your rest...but that doesn't mean you can't still do anything useful. You're willing to bet that the Brass are going to be just as confused about this turn of events as you currently are; anything you can do to enlighten them will help offset the fact that you told them not to fire on the gigantic flying Martian ship you were all aiming to kill as recently as this morning.

You head to the cramped mess hall, noting the lack of cooks and the like. The sound of activity echos throughout the ship, but not a single noise comes from the hall itself. You'll have to help yourself, you suppose. Glancing around, you make sure that the hall really is empty. Satisfied, you sneak behind the serving line and start opening a few food storages. You find all sorts of foreign ingredients more suited to the palates of the Japanese crew. Still, they ought to have...

"Bingo," you whisper in celebration. The ship hadn't been resupplied by a Japanese base in ages, so you figured there might be a chance...but you never actually expected to find a decent store of Strawberries. Grabbing quite a few, you head to a table to snack.

[Socks,] you say between bites of the delicious fruit, [what's going on now?]

[I'm not entirely sure,] he answers immediately. [These displays offer much information I cannot interpret in a useful manner. It appears the Harbinger has submerged itself, though.]

The image of the massive craft smashing through a ship as if it weren't there is still fresh in your mind. [Yeah, I know that, Socks. Is there any way at all that you could figure out more about what the hell was going on? Why did the Harbinger fire on Martian ships? He's not the type to...betray his superiors, right?]

Socks takes a moment to get over the word. [No, he is not.] There's silence on the other end as he thinks things through. [However, that's not to say the reverse is true.]

[What do you mean?]

[He may have been betrayed by his superiors.]

That's...you can't describe how it makes you feel. Angry. Sympathetic. Something like that. But what's more important is what that could mean: serious fissures between levels of the Martian Power Structure, not something that they'd want during War. Not if they're thinking straight, anyway.

Both questions burn in your mind. What kind of Command drives its subordinates to do what the Harbinger's Commander did? Will that Commander continue to assault Humanity, fulfilling a sense of duty? Or will he retaliate, attacking Martian positions in revenge? You decide to ask Socks about the Martian High Command first.

[I'm afraid I don't know much about the military command structure, Cleona. On Mars, we do not often engage in activities on the surface, nor do we have vast oceans. Our wars have never dictated a need to divide our forces into specialized terrain like your own, though I believe our commanders have begun testing the idea here. Our armed forces have ranks like your own, with an upper echelon of senior commanders and those skilled in political maneuverings.]

You're a bit confused. [You said political maneuverings?]

[Yes.]

[Is this openly announced? Business as usual?] You know your own military sometimes falls prey to politics, but you'd like to think that seniority and competence tends to dominate those in charge.

[I do not understand. Politics is a natural side effect of such an organized system.]

[I'm asking if political moves are a big part of what it takes to reach the top.]

[...I suppose that may be true. War itself is an extension of political disputes. It is only natural that our military commanders have skill in politics.]

Hmm. You can't be sure, but if the Martian Military is more overtly political, then that would explain some of the oddities in their actions.

[Would their betrayal of the Harbinger, if that's what it is, take priority in the Commander's mind? Will he attack them in revenge, or will he attempt to continue waging war against us in his own way?]

[I do not know him well enough to determine that. As it is, I feel he may focus on those he sees as having betrayed him, but I do not think he'd have many qualms about attacking humans.]

Again, an answer that does really answer with enough certainty to satisfy you. The Brass will probably want more concrete information, not feelings and vague indications of politics.

You realize you're not going to get very much out of Socks; he just doesn't know everything you need to know. Poor guy is probably tapping away at that display, trying to do everything he can to answer your questions. You sigh, staring at a strawberry as you let it dangle by the leaves. Several minutes pass as you gaze, lost in a swirl of non-thought. You blink, snapping out of your reverie.

[Socks,] you ask, [think you can deepen the link again?]

[What for, Cleona?]

[Oh, just...testing.]

He cautiously allows your mind to be more tuned in with his own, a sense of double vision flooding your senses. You feel as if you are in two places at once, lost as if in a dream. Struggling, you focus on your own slice of reality. You carefully place the strawberry in your mouth and take a bite.

[Cleona, wh-!] Socks' train of thought suddenly stops, cut off by a torrent of foreign flavor as it overwhelms him.

You take an agonizing length of time to chew the bite, letting its flavor soak your tongue in the unmistakable sweetness of a strawberry. You take another strawberry from your shrinking pile and bite it as well. Socks stays silent, unable to say a word, as you work your magic. With a satisfying gulp, you finish chewing your strawberries.

[W-what was that, Cleona?]

You smile. [Strawberries.]

[Incredible...]

And then a door swinging open forcibly removes you from Socks' mind.

Lt. Cmdr. Naomi Ito.

"What are you doing?" she asks, studying you closely.

"Eating strawberries. Want one?" You offer her one from your pile.

She stares at you, making to leave once or twice. However, your gestures manage to convince her otherwise. Without a word, she sits down next to you, taking your offered fruit. With some clumsiness, she takes a bite, grabbing some of the leaves as she does so.

"Bleh," she says, picking the leaf bits off her tongue.

"No, like this," you demonstrate. You take a large bite from below, avoiding the leaves entirely.

She watches carefully, imitating your actions with her own strawberry. Her eyes close tightly as she chews, clearly not used to (somewhat) fresh strawberries. Finished chewing, she turns to stare at the table.

You respond with a simple look. She rethinks that statement.

"...So I'm having command problems. It's only to be expected! This crew is used to being commanded by our Captain. No matter whose orders they were directly following, they saw him at the top, overseeing everything. I'm not him," she blurts.

Command problems. That's no good, especially during a time of war. "Lt. Cmdr. Ito, may I be frank?" You take her lack of response as an affirmative. "That's some grade-A bullshit right there."

"W-what?"

"The chain of command exists for a reason, you know. It's not just a way to say 'this guy is more important than this other guy,' like a lot of people seem to think. It's there to establish and keep order, even if someone gets killed along the way."

"The chain of command is there to prevent chaos. Do you want to know why the Harbinger is fighting other Martian forces right now?
Because the Martian commanders are more focussed on political jockeying than they are with winning this stupid, senseless war.
Maybe you should remind your crew what's really at stake here; not their respect for you, not even their own lives, but the survival of our entire goddamn species.
If they aren't willing to follow your orders then they should get out of the fucking way of people who are actually willing to do what it takes to achieve that."

"And you're acting captain now, right? For God's sake, think it through. The chain of command tells you all to follow the most senior officer on the ship, the guy in charge, right? That's you right now. They should be following you." You give her about the most serious look you can muster. She can't seriously be this stupid, right?

Ito doesn't immediately answer. From the way she fidgets, you feel like she's a pressure cooker about to explode. For a moment, you think she might just end the conversation right here and now, storming out and having you thrown overboard or something ridiculous. Instead, she breaks down.

"Did you consider that you've been a Witch this entire time? If there was ever a problem with the remote possibility of you being in a position of authority, don't you think that you'd be some damned ensign somewhere, answering to everyone but the poor enlisted fools like myself?"

"But-"

"No buts! The Captain, someone you and the entire crew trusted and followed, chose you to fulfill the duties of being his second in command. That includes taking over if he died. Think about that. He trusted you. Not those pukes smoking and playing cards in a god damned cargo hold. You."

Naomi Ito stays silent, processing your words.

"Don't thank me; I swiped them from behind the serving line. You have no idea how drained I am from that dive," you tell her, waving off her thanks. "If anything, you should be nailing me for theft right now."

Ito gives a more cheerful laugh. "I think I'll let that one slide. I don't think you'd have managed to get me in here without them, and where would I be then?"

You smile. "Lost and confused, probably." You let her finish chuckling at that before going on. "Look, even just turning a wrench for a living can get pretty stressful. I know how important it is to have someone to slap you in the face from time to time. I might not be around for much longer, but...if you ever need someone to talk to..."

You decide now's not the time to start talking about the battle waging (or that was waging) close by. She's not likely to really forget about all her responsibilities or the dangers of war during this strawberry break, but the least you can do is let her try.

"So, Lt. Cmdr. Naomi Ito. You ever play cards?" you ask.

"Cards?"

"Yeah, cards," you say, producing a pack of waterproof playing cards from your pack.

"You took those with you?"

"Why wouldn't I?"

"You're crazy," she says, smiling.

The two of you play cards until the strawberries are all gone, enjoying the simple competition and shooting the breeze. You start to feel the fatigue bury itself; it's still there, but it's gone from the surface. You're enjoying yourself, recuperating your mind. From the way she's naturally tossing cards and laughing, you figure Ito's feeling the same way.

"Well, I can't hide in here forever," Ito says at last.

"Nope. You've got a ship to command."

Ito nods. As she steps through the hatch, she looks back at you. "Thank you, Chief."

You decide you'd have a better chance of not getting your ass chewed by MacArthur and friends if you gave the information you've gotten some time to disseminate before you all get back to Brisbane tomorrow-ish. That means catching back up to Ito. As you clean up your table, you decide it's probably best to let her have a little bit of time to get back into Lt. Cmdr. Ito of the Yukikaze mode.

Picking up your gear, you head back to the cargo bay. As you enter you almost expect to be hit by a wall of cigarette smoke, but thankfully those three slackers are nowhere to be seen (or smelled). You head to the corner where the Substrikers were stored, carefully stowing them. You note that the crate containing your mini-torpedoes is decently full. You can't say the same about those mines, though.
>>
>>20792924

Deciding enough time has passed, you head to the bridge, hoping to find Ito there. As you enter, you see one of the slackers. He's a shorter, more portly fellow, a bit of an oddity. Behind him, keeping a firm hand on his shoulder, is an intimidating fellow you recognize as one of those that busted the slackers yesterday. In front of him is a very displeased-looking Ito. They're speaking in Japanese, but you're pretty sure they're saying something along the lines of:

"You were caught slacking again."

"I'm not slacking, I'm working."

"Blah blah is not working."

And so on. Any time the slacker tries to raise his voice, the friendly man behind him squeezes the slacker's arm, reminding him who he's talking to. After some discussion, Ito says something to the friendly man, who then begins to lead the slacker out. As the slacker slips by you, you catch him muttering.

You let him walk by, entering the bridge as the hatch clears. You're not quite sure how inter-service doctrine dictates you should greet her, but you figure a brisk salute should suffice. "Lt. Cmdr. Ito," you address, snapping a salute.

"Chief Kukyendall," she answers, turning to you. "What is it?"

"I'd like to report on my findings."

"Findings?"

"Regarding the situation with the Harbinger and Martians, ma'am."

Ito looks around the bridge, making sure everything's in working order before turning back to you. "Of course. Let's talk, shall we?" She nods to a sailor, then leads you out. She brings you to a room functioning as her office. "What have you learned?"

"Ma'am," you begin as you take a seat, "it looks like there's a rift between the Harbinger and the proper Martian forces."

"Well yes; that was certainly obvious once it opened fire on its own ships. I've gotten that information already, Chief."

"Yes, but it's more than that. From what Socks understands, the commander of the Harbinger is not a man to arbitrarily betray his superiors. He was pushed to this by those in charge."

Ito bites her lip. "What does this mean, then?"

"From what I've learned from Socks, the Martian High Command might be just as much political as it is military. They're probably jockying for position, rewarding certain underlings and punishing others, the war be damned."

"...You're talking about infighting."

"Exactly. They should be fighting us, but instead their top leaders are fighting each other. They're complete idiots with regards to war."

Ito twirls a pen. "That would explain some of the disunity in their global efforts..."

"In addition, I'd like to talk about why the Harbinger should no longer be the primary focus of our attacks."

"Oh, speaking of which, I heard the order come through earlier to cease all fire on it. That was a puzzling one."

"I believe I'm responsible for that one, Lt. Cmdr."

"Oh?" she asks, curious.

"Socks and I believe that the Harbinger isn't likely to focus its efforts on Human targets. As evidenced by the battle, he's more likely to focus on revenge."
>>
>>20793250

"How can you understand how an alien commander thinks?"

"It's obvious, isn't it? The Harbinger spent most of its time chasing Socks with ineffective and poorly-thought-out assaults. If he had simply wanted to prevent a Martian Scientist from falling into our hands, he could have just had Socks assassinated, or the flotilla annihilated. There's enough mobile weaponry on the Harbinger to devastate entire fleets. The commander didn't want Socks eliminated, he wanted Socks brought back so he could personally deal with someone he viewed as betraying him."

"And the commander now thinks the High Command betrayed him?"

"Exactly. He'll be tying up Martian forces and doing damage if we let him roam free."

Ito mulls this over. "I'll be sure to forward your thoughts to Admiral Isaki for consideration. I feel he'll pass them on to General MacArthur as well."

You salute. "Thank you, Ma'am."

With that done, you're about ready to collapse.

You're tired as hell. You've been in and out of combat like crazy, and the past month feels like one long, exhausting day. It's time to get some rest. Heading to your bunk, you pass by a few crew members, but otherwise have an uneventful trip. A blessing, you think, given your knack for being in the middle of chance events. You hop on the bunk, not once even thinking about complaining. Its mattress is too thin, its blankets too cheap, its pillow nonexistent...but you can sleep in it, and that's all you care about.

Before you head to dreamland, however, you decide to give Socks a few words. You did end a bit abruptly, after all.

[Socks, you there?]

[...Yes, Cleona.]

[Sorry about earlier. Lt. Cmdr. Ito kind of busted in on me and I had to deal with it.]

[Do not worry; I understand that sometimes situations come up that must be handled.]

You sigh. [Don't be like that, Socks. I'm sorry, really.]

[Be like what? I don't understand.]

You decide to let it go. [...Nothing. Well, I guess I'm heading to sleep. Good night, Socks.]

[Ah, Cleona, before you go...]

[Yeah?]

[That exquisite taste. What was it again?]

You chuckle. [Strawberries, Socks.]

[Yes! May we...eat them again in the future?]

[Yeah. All the strawberries you want.]

You can sense his eagerness from here.
