PREVIOUSLY on Civilization Quest!

The painted-faced champion sees his moment as Trym slips on a stone! Raising his twin axes into the air, the warrior brings them down on the tribal champion's unprotected back, their copper blades flashing in the sunlight!

At the last possible second, acting on some prenatural impulse, Trym desperately hurls himself to one side! The axes that should have ended his life dig bloody gouges into his back, splitting the copper scales of his coat, but not killing him. The champion staggers to his feet, gasping for breath and leaning on his spear. He sways slightly, then sets his feet and levels his spear once more. It'll take more than a lucky strike like that to kill Trym Wolfsbane, slayer of the Wolf Spirit and champion of the tribe!

Well, two isn't a great start, but it was slow last time as well. I'll give it a little longer to see if anyone's around. Jeeze, I'm starting to think I need to hire a laser to write the time this thread starts on the moon or something...

CHAMPION 18HP

The enemy champion's eyes flicker back to the lion-skin-wearing shaman (or so he's guessed to be). The shaman almost seems to smile under the lion's head resting over his and starts to chant again, the sound almost at once setting the earth thrumming beneath Trym's feet. The warrior spins his axes, holding them back behind him and crouching, his face splitting in a grin. Trym doesn't even need a translator to know the few words he speaks in his strange language mean, "It's over. I smell blood."
>>
>>20800790

sounds like a special
we should defend

He seems to be doing a special, so I guess it's time to defend
>>
Oh, we are some poor yuropeans.

Defend now and let him smell his own blood!
>>
Defend.
>>
We're dead, but maybe we can still win this. This guy is the king of tricks, we should attack!

He's ready to launch a special, and holding his axes behind his back. That must mean that he wants us to think he's baiting us to attack so we would defend. In which case we should strike at him!
>>
Posted for everyone's comfort:

DUEL
Duels will be decided via a rock-paper-scissors sytem.
A ferocious ATTACK beats a readied DEFENCE, dealing light damage.
A powerful SPECIAL will defeat and ATTACK'S raw power, dealing heavy damage.
A readied DEFENCE will deflect a SPECIAL, dealing moderate damage.
Two ATTACKS will result in a stand-off. At the moment, the odds are 50/50 that your hunter will win and deal MODERATE damage
Two SPECIALS will result in both parties taking moderate damage.
Two DEFENCES will result in a stand-off and neither party will take damage.

Watch your opponent's mannerisms and try to predict his moves!
>>

>>
>>20800842

an attack hitting our defend his much lighter damage than a special hitting our attack

> Why do you think my name is 'Britfag'?

Trym realises he's in a bad way. His back feels like it's burning and he may not have much longer to live... But his determination to win burns in his heart, even as the enemy champion charges! In his pain-addled state, Trym swears that what attacks is not a man, but a spectral lion, standing on its hind legs, its mouth agape to swallow him whole! Any sane man would run. But it takes a special brand of crazy to be a hero. Trym stabs out with his spear, holding his ground defensively and aiming at the beast's mouth! Reality rapidly re-asserts itself as the warrior has to check his charge, nearly falling over himself as the spear just misses his throat, the point dropping short a little. Trym takes one great step forward and punches the tip through his enemy's breastplate, even as the warrior backs up!

The Champion looks stunned... And angry. The shaman stops his chanting in shock, but the enemy warrior's eyes burn with fury. He shouts something insulting and aggressive in his own language, scraping his axe blades against one another as he rolls his shoulders and glares at Trym in fury.
>>
Special? Special!
>>

Looks like he will attack or defend... Maybe we special?
>>
Aha! Last time he said something mocking, he defended. Let's attack.
>>
>>20800962
Damn, I'm so friggin undecided. I really can't tell if he's defending or attacking. I'm counting the special out, since the shaman's not chanting.

He looks angry and scrapes his axes together [maybe to block an attack?], but he also rolls his shoulders and is furious.

>what do, what do

Special. If someone disagrees, i'm open to suggestions
>>
>>20801036
I'm changint to Attack. The Champion is also stunned, and as Rock said, last time he insulted he defended
>>
Reminder from last thread.

>The champion jumps back, smiling, but favouring his un-wounded arm, his other hanging a little limp. He says something mocking in his own language as he circles. The lion-skin wearing man ceases his chanting, seemingly exhausted.

>Trym opts to play it defensive, keeping back and using his spear to keep the range. The other warrior keep circling warily, neither of the two making a move for the other.
>>
You guys are right, I'll change to attack too. Please don't let me down now! I just want to return to our village safely and start building skyscrapers made of wood!

rolled 95 = 95

Trym can't wait any longer. The pain in his back is telling him he needs to end the fight now. He steps forward, breaking into a charge, spear-first, his now destroyed coat trailing copper scales like leaves in fall. The enemy champion likewise breaks into a sprinting charge. His hand flashes out, aiming to knock Trym's spear aside with one axe and strike with the other!

The weapons clash with a crash of metal and the rattle of wood. A blade flashes high in the sun, before falling to the ground. Blood drips from the tip of Trym's spear as the enemy warrior stumbles back, staring dumbfounded at his broken axe, blood dripping from his chest where the hides were pierced.

The Champion casts the splintered handle of his axe aside, raising his other one and calling to the shaman. The lion-skinned man tried to chant again, but stumbles over his words and coughs heavily. He tries again, but he's clearly exhausted and spent. The warrior shakes his head and points at Trym, then draws a line across his throat. The universal sign language for, "You're worm food." He straightens his back and raises his axe. It looks like this is all he has left in him.

As the enemy warrior attacks, Trym feels a strange state come over him. It's almost like he's disconnected from his body. The pain that previously burned across his back is suddenly gone as his body tricks his mind into thinking he's unharmed. Unhurriedly, almost as though at his leisure, Trym spins his spear and ducks the warrior's swing, jabbing upwards. Adrenaline does curious things to the body's strength and the copper head and sturdy, wooden shaft, push straight through the limb. Trym jams the butt end of the spear into the dirt, drawing his knife and neatly slicing his foe's hamstring. He steps behind the warrior, back-to-back, catching the axe now slipping from the man's hand, without even looking. He turns and with a screaming battle cry, a trick learned from the very tribe who's champion he fights, he brings the axe up. There's a sudden wrench and the champion's head hangs, nearly severed, the copper axe's soft metal splitting and deforming as it hits the spine. The man is dead instantly, a brutal, but relatively painless final blow.

TRYM VICTORY!

The crow shaman agrees, nodding, "You won, so it's only right that you take what you can. The copper is yours. The land is ours though. You have torn our legs from under us. Our wandering days are now over."

Anything else you would like to do?
>>
>>20801721
The copper mine is just south of their village, how are we gonna keep hold of it if they give it to us? We would need to secure both the mine and the transportation of the cargo. For taking a slice of their mining we would need but a few men stationed at the mine, in order to keep their production monitored [so they won't trick us]
>>
>>20801907
Take their 5 strongest women so they would bear strong children for our people!

And heal Trym, the guy almost died for us. And offer this victory to Gorza
>>
>>20801907
Demand that they help us, when we call for their aid. We have proven our strength over them, so the least they can do is to come and support us.

For now we shall live peacefully, each in their own territory.
Also, we go vassalizing the other tribe downstream, since those fuckers didn't care to help us.
>>
>>20801942
Might be a bad idea to take people into our tribe that murdered some of ours. Could cause some trouble.

Though generally I don't disagree with a simple exchange of volunteers that might want to live in each others tribe. Should help strengthen relations in the future.
>>
>>20801975
Yeah, you are right about that. We should find out where did they get the pitch so that we can also have some atlatls of our own. Might be useful when we decide to go down the river
>>
>>20801975
But that later. They just kill some of our people, we killed some of theirs...
>>20801907
Sorry for creeping you out.
>>
>>20802040
Yea of course later. It was what I or someone else originally suggested for the first tribe we met (the one downstream).
>>
I've not the foggiest of a plan to secure the mine.
>>
>>20802099
Well, the tribe seems to be at least somewhat honourable, so we might not need to. Though they are also kinda blood thirsty so maybe they will betray us at some point.
>>
Just making sure I've got this straight (I forgot how much I hate freeform choice: Current idea is to demand hostages as well, then everyone heads home?
>>
>>20802142
True enough. Now that they respect us as the strongest they might back off, or it could spur them to come after us when they're stronger. The way the shaman said their wandering days are over seems to hint that they won't be seeking out bloody battles anymore.
>>
>>20802170
No hostages. We will just take the copper and go home
>>
>>20802189
Yep, just the copper, be it in the form of mine or mining quote
>>
>>20802189
>>20802205
I'm with these guys. We definitely don't want to insult their honour by demanding too much. The mine is enough. We could set up a small mining village.
>>
The tribe agrees that they will not harass any of your tribesmen that come to mine copper, provided they do not start trouble first. With negotiations concluded, the warriors turn for home.

When they return to the village, Trym is treated like the hero he is! The entire village celebrates his hard-won victory, though Trym himself is weakened by the journey and his wounds and is forced to rest.
>>
>>20802170
No hostages, just demand the copper mine. And offer the opportunity for both of us to call each other for aid, as we respect their strength. Formulating it like this might convince them.
>>
> New turn at last!

I would suggest we get the Wise Ones to research sleds. We'll need a good way to move copper from the mine back to our village.

>>
>>20802329
We need to First Get some medication for Trym and Second improve our relations with Groza.

>>
Guys we don't really need a lot of copper because the village gave us almost all the copper we had we need Groza to be on our side and we need better medication.
>>
>>20802451
That's right. After seeing the Lion Spirit at work, I think it would REALLY be a good idea to get to work on Groza's demands.
>>
While Rina works to ensure Trym heals well, the rest of the village celebrates. Food and berry liqueur flow in abundance, along with music, dancing, stories and celebrations. Trym is rightly hailed as a hero, especially when Chani's magic allows him to join the feast, although weak and pale from his injuries.

After the celebrations are done, several of the tribe take carts with them, as well as tools, setting out to mine copper from the hills. The other tribe is as good as its word and doesn't harass them in any way, although the miners do report some of the other tribe also taking copper from the hills. When (with great difficulty), they questioned them, the crow shaman pointed out that they agreed to let you mine, but they never agreed to themselves stop. There seems to be plenty for everyone anyway.
