The year is 2032. That isn't strange to you.

You're surrounded by just over a dozen catgirls currently suiting up in radiation gear while strapping on plate carriers and loading AK mags. This is not strange to you.

What is strange is how they all duck slightly and look away at any mention of the mountain you need to go to, and whatever it is that lies inside.

"What do you mean, "she"?" You press, but even at the mention of that, the girls scatter for the most part. You try confronting the smallest one but she resorts to crawling frantically away after tripping, both her feet inside a radiation suit.

"I seriously hope you guys..." You stop as Amunet sighs loud enough that it's a vivid expression. Turning toward the rather rugged silver haired catgirl, you just throw up your arms, "No one can just explain it to me, really? I mean, don't do THIS!" You gesture toward the rest of them, all keeping their distance.

We're going to the fucking mountain no matter what so they may as well give us some answers. Tell them that if they're afraid of saying the name of whatever is there they can just call it Shagnasty.
>>
FINALLY. THE TIME HAS COME.

>[x]Touch fluffy tails.
>>
Though you didn't think her capable of something like it, Amunet's lips turn up in a bemused smile as her yellow eyes continue to stare. You've seen that before, like a cat playing with a mouse, and you don't like that at all. Maybe if she had you cuffed to the bed-stand, but not while she's touting an arsenal and withholding what seems to be rather crucial information.

"Would you refrain from giving our guest so much of a headache? He has been rather civil." Merte steps out from behind a row of lockers, fully suited up, and releases the charging handle of her khyber pass style AKM.

All you return is a hard stare, and the oldest of the young group of catgirls shifts uncomfortably after a moment. Her tail begins to sway, wrapped inside the obviously home-made addition to the suit.

"What?" She finally asks.

"You didn't tell me either!" You hound her.

"Well that's... We don't even know what she is, certainly not a name. But if that mountain is your destination..." She pauses long enough for you to roll your hand, not letting her just leave it at that, "Then you should perhaps reconsider..."

You slap the charging handle of your G3 and the bolt slams home, chambering the beefy 7.62x51 round.

"If I pussy out now I've got a few weeks left at best. I'd rather not be a scardy cat and take my chances with whatever eldritch horror awaits and I don't give a damn how hungry it is."

The last heavy vault-like doors of the shelter open and once again you're greeted by the harsh wasteland beyond. Glassed sand whipped up by an angered wind, sun blazing un-abrupted by clouds. You aren't a believer, but this is how you'd imagine hell.

Blades already spun up and ready, the Hind waits a short distance away. The catgirl pilot watches you approach through the aviators that appear to be glued to the mask of the suit she's wearing.

"We'll help you find your friends and get you to the mountain, but we won't go inside!" Merte has to shout and stay rather close for you to hear over the tremendous sound from the chopper. You simply nod in response, you couldn't have asked them to go inside before, let alone after seeing their reactions to the mere mention of it.

Into the rear of the old Soviet flying tank you pile, seating yourself rather comfortably between two catgirls before kicking your feet out and placing an arm around each of them.

"Preflight complete, I'm ready."

"Careful or she'll open your suit up like a can of tuna." The one to your right lets you know perhaps a bit too cheerfully. Glancing to your left, you notice it's Amunet.

Your hands eagerly seek out something to do and immediately fall to your radio, the one linking you back to Karin. Though you don't remember doing so, it's been switched off and without even pausing to think you flip the switch.

Immediately you regret doing so.

A wall of noise blasts you in the ear. So loud and so grating that it's physically painful to the point where you nearly pull off your suit just to dig the damn thing out of your ear.

"Karin! Calm the hell down!"

"WHAT THE SLITHERING FUCK HAVE YOU BEEN DOING THESE LAST FEW HOURS?!"

"That's not a funny joke, Eri..."

"It's catgirls." You cut in.

"k... How could it be catgirls?"

"I don't know, it's amazing, Karin. Like some kind of lost world preserved in time. Life found a way. We can save them, Karin, we weren't able to before but now we can. We'll just have to put them back in their natural habitat and..."

"Quit talking crazy talk!" Karin shouts rather suddenly, "You've been out of contact for hours! What the hell happened, Erik?"

You look around the cramped interior of the Hind as it bucks and shakes in the high wind, a dozen catgirls staring back at you.

"Seriously, though. I got abducted by catgirls. Catgirls in radiation suits."

"Yep. Furry ears and all. Oh and they have a Hind. I'm literally freeballing around the deadlands in a Hind. This would be awesome if it wasn't so damn stuffy in these suits."

"D-dad wait! Give me ba...!"

You hear what sounds like a struggle from the other end, a lot of stuff brushing into the mic and maybe something being knocked from a table.

"Did you say a HIND?! As in, Soviet helicopter Hind?!" Jimbo's gruff voice instantly recognizable.

"I did."

"Oh man, you lucky little shit. It FLIES?! Hey can you... OW! Alright, alright!"

"Bit excited, is he?" You have to bite your tongue not to laugh.

"A bit? He wanted you to take out a tape and start measuring various parts or something. That's not important. Are you seriously..."

"I am seriously in a Hind surrounded by catgirls and we are now looking for Ivan and the rest of 'em. They got left behind, couldn't keep up with my mad bike skills."

Wonder just what the others have been up to
>>
As Karin loses her shit as a scientist, demanding explanations, anatomy descriptions, and various other things, you zone out a bit.

Instead you watch as the door gunners continue to scan left and right, no doubt looking for any sign of your friends. Thinking about that makes you realize it will be difficult. No doubt they're hiding if the chopper were to get close enough, as they probably don't see it as being friendly.

"Focus, Erik. How long of tails do they have and what age group do they fall under? Tail to age ratio was always a disputed point, I for one side with..."

"I don't know, a meter? Not what I'm really worried about right now, Karin."

"Err... Right, sorry."

What you'd hoped would be a quick twenty minute search drags past its first hour and begins to close in on the second. You have yet to see any signs of your friends, and with the high wind kicking sand everywhere, you can't even find any tracks from the bikes.

"We'll have to refuel, soon." Amunet lets you know, now standing inside the large chopper while looking out one of the ports herself.

"We've gone up and down the area you guys found me at already?"

"Already? We've done that half a dozen times. The wind is making it hard to see much of anything on the ground and night is approaching. We may have to try again tomorrow, on the ground."

[ ] "I can't wait that long, drop me off at the mountain and keep looking until you can't anymore."

Trying to find people on the wasteland without any clear meeting place is a bit far fetched.

[X] "I can't wait that long, drop me off at the mountain and keep looking until you can't anymore."

Have them leave us some signal flares and the needed stuff for a large fire.
>>
"Drop me on the ground and stay in the sky as long as you can, we've got to find them." You're more worried about your friends than you are about anything else. While it's true that they followed you here willingly, you'd never feel right again if anything happened to them.

"Are you sure? We only have enough fuel for another half hour before we must return." Amunet turns her head toward the cockpit where the pilot, still wearing the aviators, nods.

You reach under the bench seat behind you and pull out a small hard case.

"Flares, right? I'll pop two off if I find them, one if I'm in trouble. If you have to head back, do so, but sortie at least once at night if you can. It would be easy to see the flare."

After explaining your plan to Merte, you ready the bike and back it down the ramp as the Hind hovers just inches off the highly radioactive sand. Once free you fire up the motor and get some distance between you and the Hind, eager to get out from under the rotor wash.

You retrace your steps to the last place you saw your friends, though that proves difficult. There are no tracks left so you have to go by the mounds of earth moved by the sandworms. You make sure to stay cautious around those, but none resurface to continue pursuit.

"Maybe they sleep at night?" You wonder, looking out toward the horizon as the last of the sun disappears.

The dirtbike has a headlight but it is alarmingly weak, barely enough to illuminate the terrain fifty feet in front of you. You hope that the noise of the bike would be enough for your friends to signal you somehow. But that has yet to happen.

"Do you see anything on the photos? Some kind of natural hideout? Anything?" You pry Karin but, again, she finds herself unable to help.

"These are old photos and we've checked the places I found." You can hear the frustration in her voice.

As dusk turns to night you see the lights off in the distance as the Hind takes flight again. That makes you wonder just how long you've been searching without finding a trace. You figure that gives you about two hours before they have to return and you need to find some place to stay safe.

The wind, which you'd hoped would abate come nightfall, has if anything only increased in ferocity. Small funnels of sand whirl and twist in the narrow beam of your headlight, which now is the only source of light. Even the stars and moon don't seem to permeate this black.

After cresting a high ridge and again coming up empty, you slow the bike to a stop and beat a fist on the handlebars. You're going to have to change your strategy here.

You've got that flaregun and that might draw your friends in. At the same time, it would signal the chopper but also might now alert the military.

The rifle on your back has a loud and recognizable report, Ivan would know the sound in an instant if he was close enough.

"I could always ask..." You look back toward the dark patch of terrain where the sandworm tunnels were, and shudder.

You decide against trying to fire off the rifle or the flare gun, as both are just as likely to draw unnecessary attention as they are to signal your friends.

Instead you turn your attention toward the mountain, though it's too far off in the distance for you to see. You hope your friends decided to head there after being unable to find you post-chase.

Revving the bike back up the tires dig into the sand and you get back underway. Though you can't be sure you'll find your friends there, at least it's better than combing desert you've probably already been over once or twice.

You take some solace in the fact that Jack is with them, and though you don't truthfully know much about insane walrusmen, you hope that would be enough to dissuade any would-be assailants as well.

"No luck finding them, I'm going to try the mountain I guess. Otherwise I'm out of ideas." You cue to Karin, and when she responds, the stress and sleep deprivation in her voice are apparent.

"Well calculating it out, they couldn't have gotten much further than that on those bikes but I don't know, my math could be off and these photos... There's really no way to judge distance accurately."

"Don't worry about it, focus on what we have control over. That is... The big triangle rock... Where in regards to..."

"Are you lost, Erik?"

"I am NEVER lost. Men don't get lost. I'm simply relaying my directions to you so you know them, that isn't being lost."

"The rock should be on your left, Erik. Head west."

Keeping your distance from any signs of the sandworms, though that's difficult without much light, you take Karin's advice and adjust course. The terrain levels out and you manage to pick up some speed, enough to actually cover some ground.

The mountain finally comes into view, if only because it blocks out all the stars in its profile. As if that doesn't feel ominous enough to you, the air itself takes a chill.

You're not overly affected by the cold, as a Frost. You would be more or less fine sitting in snow completely naked, aside from the mild discomfort from the texture of it.

But you can certainly tell when it's getting cold, and damn is it. You're forced to stop for a moment as the suit fogs up to the point you can't see, which out here in the deadlands is eerie, because there's no noise aside from the wind which is howling.

At long last you reach the base of the mountain and a few steps later, you're up to your knees in snow. That throws you off big time, as the desert around the mountain is rather warm.

"Frost magic ain't gotta explain shit, huh?" You look up and shake your head. "That's one big damn mountain."

Checking all your gear, you begin the grueling trudge up the side of the steep slope.

The higher you progress, the deeper and deeper the snow gets. Still, it doesn't bother you too much. This kind of place would be your race's natural environment and was at least in that other world.

You ponder, as you climb, about that place. There are a lot of theories floating around as to HOW it happened, but the most prominent is that somehow two different dimensions or planes were suddenly thrust together and had to deal with it.

As laughable as that theory might be to some, at least it held up better in your mind than the guy who seriously wrote a book titled "Jews did apocalypse".

You spot the mouth of a cave just ten feet away, rather small and full of jagged teeth of ice. Out of instinct you lob a snowball, and, garnering no response, decide it's probably safe to enter.

"Bill? Ivan?" You shout inside, keeping your rifle at the ready.

There's no response.

There's just something about that entrance that you don't like, something you can't get over. In situations like that, you just back away and try something else.

Namely firing your rifle into the air. With the wind as wicked as it is right now, there's no way the sound would be heard at any far distance. Instead, you hope it will act as a beacon for your lost comrades.

You fire up into the air in the signal for "lost", snow flying off of your rifle from the vibrations of the receiver, and then you wait.

The wait is long and you grow rather bored, up here on the side of a mountain with nothing much at all to do except continue to shake off the accumulating snow.

Finally it appears your method is rewarded as you hear what sounds like footsteps coming from above you. Turning toward the noise, you squint to try to see anything at all, but find yourself unable to through the snow and the dark.

"Ivan? Bill? Tails?" You call up.

A sound you can only describe as ice rattling is all that responds in return.

"...Jack?" You ask hopefully, though you're already shouldering your rifle.

The sound stops, leaving you, heart racing, alone. You continue to scan around, looking for something, anything. Maybe whatever it was decided to leave you...

!!!

Your foot is snagged hard and without warning and before you can react, you've already been pulled waist deep into the snow. In a panic you draw the FNP out of its holster and try to fire beneath you, but the shots seem to have no effect.

"Attacking the iceman in my natural element? How very foolish, allow me to...!"

You're dragged down to your chest this time, and decide that perhaps the monologue can wait until after you've thoroughly beaten whatever it is that has decided to mess with you.

Forming blades of ice down your legs, you get to kicking and stomping as best you can, which is neither much nor powerful. Something has a firm grip on you and it's only tightening the more you struggle.

Continuously you're pulled, more and more into the snow, until it's above your head. Your attacks and thrashing only becomes ore frantic now as you struggle to try to get free. Nothing you do seems to work and every kick just feels as though you're kicking snow.

There's a final tug before you're dropped rather unceremoniously down into a dark chamber where you scramble to your feet and switch on the weaponlight of your pistol.

What's staring at you is unlike anything you've seen before. She appears to be made out of pure snow and nothing more, though if you had to place her...

A slime?

"What the fuck are you?!" You shout as she lunges forwards, arms of snow reaching out to snatch you again. This time you're prepared and slash out with a blade of ice, which cuts right through but doesn't phase her for more than a nanosecond as the hand reforms and reaches yet again.

You fire the pistol now, the .45 caliber rounds punching neat holes in her body. Holes that close up almost immediately.

"You uh... Want to talk this one out?!"

Another lunge toward you, this time with both hands, is clear enough evidence to you toward the contrary.

Scrambling backwards you try to put as much distance between you and whatever the hell THAT is while thinking hard. So far your attacks have amounted to jack and that doesn't work for you.

You can see the cave gets deeper, boring into the mountainside. While that isn't exactly where you want to go, there aren't really any other options at the moment.

The girl, if you could call her that, is still charging faster than you can backpeddle.

In an attempt to slow her down, you try desperately to actually FREEZE her. This seems to slow her down slightly as she vents her frustration in a scream that pierces your ears. The snow that makes up her body clumps together slightly, a slight sheen forming over it.

All the opportunity you needed to break and run.

Light from the pistol bouncing over the rock walls you dash down further into the cave. The snow monster screaming louder and higher pitched now as you pull away.

"Holy fuck, snow slimes? That's a thing?!" You rant but only receive static. The mountain must be blocking the signal.

You begin to slow down, having put a great deal of distance between you and that thing, whatever it was. Taking a second to look around, you realize how spectacularly lost you are.

There's only one direction to go, and at a loss as to what else to do, you follow it.

The cavern begins to expand out slightly, enough that you don't have to watch your head so much. As you lament that these suits don't support some kind of night vision, something glimmers in the corner of your eye.

Light?

Slowing to a cautious, quiet step, you peer around the natural outcropping of rock and stop. It takes a few moments for your eyes to adjust, but it's clear now what you're looking at.

A pool of water, nearly a large pond in size. You would have thought it would be frozen over, but the surface doesn't appear to be touched by ice at all.

Stranger still is the light that emanates from inside, as though the entirety of the water is glowing. Having had dozens of encounters with slimes, you scan for any sign of a core, but can't see one.

Gingerly picking up a rock, you hurl it out and with a loud splash it impacts. You level the G3 and wait, letting the seconds tick by. The water churns for a minute, stirred up by the intrusion, before returning to its prior calm, serene state.

"Guess it isn't always a slime girl." You mutter, approaching with the rifle at a low ready. Nothing jumps out, nothing moves in the shadows, and for the first time on this trip you don't feel the presence of immediate peril.

Gazing up appreciatively at the stalactites of ice hanging from the rather high ceiling, you nearly reach the pool before just as nearly tripping.

Catching yourself before going down, you kick out at the annoyance, which goes sliding across the stone bottom of the cavern.

It's something you'd recognize instantly and everywhere, having seen it for years. Something that sends a chill right down your spine where it settles like a rock in your gut.

The wood, tarnished and worn and rugged. A metal barrel lacking almost any finish. A cut down Mosin Nagant, an Obrez.

Ivan's Obrez.

It would be an interesting combination and I'd suggest really making it your own instead of relying too heavily on just the setting, if that makes sense.

Monstergirls are always good and they would probably fit right into that universe. Let me know when you're running it and I'll try to be there if I'm able.

>led by a soldier who's also an otaku
Dohoho Japan

The manga any good, by the way? Been churning through a bunch of them while riding shotgun. Turns out you can hold a lot of extra batteries in a M16 mag pouch which I've been using with some junky duracell charger to keep my tablet going.
>>
>>20923070
It could be much better, if it weren't for severe cases of "JAPAN!".
>>
>>20923011
I'd always thought IVAN=Boof but if he was truly a separate person than his loss is a harsh one. I hope he's working the bolt and stammering drunkenly about SISTEMA and FART BULLET in the afterlife. I certainly miss him either way.

"IVAN!" You shout, the sound bouncing off the walls, dozens of echos following.

You know he isn't about to respond. Ivan would never abandon his Obrez. If not only out of sentimentality, than out of practicality. Even if it's run dry it still makes for a wicked cudgel, you've seen that point made firsthand.

Picking up the gun and turning it over in your hands, you examine it for blood, well, recent blood. Nothing. No obvious signs of struggle past what it wore before this. Seemingly nothing out of the ordinary. It doesn't even smell like rancid cat urine so it couldn't have been fired recently, either.

Checking the chamber you see it's still quite loaded as well. Either he dropped it without realizing it, or somehow left it behind without a fight.

Tucking the quite ancient device of glorious motherland into your plate carrier, you search around the cave for any sign of struggle but again come up empty. No blood, no scuff marks, no bullet holes. Not even the heavy scent that gunpowder of any kind leaves behind when expended in a closed environment.

You know that whatever the case is, something most certainly isn't right here. Approaching the pool you notice it's really only perhaps a foot deep. Too shallow for anything to disappear into.
>>
>>20923144
It's a glowing pool in a magic mountion. Depth hardly matters.
Can we still see that rock we tossed in?

Angry and still overtly suspicious of the pool, you hurl another rock into it, then another and another. Each one causes a splash and sinks quickly to the bottom.

You even go so far as to beginning to freeze the water, but even that yields no result. It freezes the same as any other pool would, only the more the ice stretches across it, the dimmer the light becomes.

Thanks for the feedback. My intention was only to take the premise of the manga, and use everything else as input for designing the universe. Was thinking of either starting this weekend or sometime during he next week, depending inhospitable quickly I can pull everything together.

As for the manga, I personally like it, if only because the hilarious superiority of guns makes me laugh. Also, a dragon gets its leg blown off with a Panzerfaust, so there's that.

Will elaborate more after I get back to my damn computer.

You push your powers to their very limits, ice continuously inching across the top of the water as you freeze and freeze and freeze. Until, quite suddenly, you're in the dark.

Except for your weaponlight, trained on the frozen pool.

The FNP coughs half a dozen times, chunks of ice blowing off the top of the pool as you lay into it. Still, no reaction.

"Guess that's that..." You mumble, stepping out onto the frozen water to try to raise any action but again finding none in return.

Though you can't shake the feeling that the pool hadn't told you all of its secrets, you did your best in trying to get it to cough them up. Maybe you're fortunate it didn't, you really don't know what to think or expect at this point.

All you know is, you're tired, hungry, and now very angry. Something has taken your friend, and something is going to pay dearly for doing so. That's all you can come up with.

Continuing your trudge through the dark, cold cave, you have the sensation that there's a ringing in your ear. Though you can't exactly remove your gear to take care of it you at least attempt to, pressing in on the side of the headgear.

Another twenty yards later, however, you know that it isn't just a ringing. There's something making noise, further into the cave where it begins to drop down at an ever increasing gradient. Something is clearly down there.

And it is singing.
>>

Oh sweet fucking cake-frosted tits, I finally managed to get home after 8 fucking hours.

In any case, I'm debating how much sci-fi or fantasy elements I should integrate. Should magic be a thing? Should I include technology that we'll probably have in a few years? How easily should people from our side be able to grasp some of the more fantasy-esque factors over there, or how long should it take them to analyze it? Yaddayaddayadda details.

Not really sure how to discuss it in length without distracting you from the story.

Sorry, I know I've been slow. Been a long week and with durr season starting up Monday I've been getting ready for that when not working.

>>20923920
Magic vs guns is always fun. Humans adapt shockingly fast, I don't think it would take long to recover lost tech or understand fantasy stuff like magic. Not the more fireball~y stuff for lack of a better term.

The singing is unlike anything you've ever really heard before. You're certainly no musical aficionado but something about this voice is very much different to you. Neither overtly sweet or melancholy, almost like someone singing to themselves.

You check yourself, make sure that it isn't some kind of siren pulling you in, but you don't get that sensation of head-in-the-clouds bliss. It's certainly alluring in that you want to sate your curiosity, but beyond that, nothing.

There's something about it you do recognize, though, almost as if you've heard it before. Some kind of familiarity, soothing, almost comforting about it. You doubt whatever it is is any kind of threat, not with any tangible proof, but just some kind of gut feeling.

Words slowly start to escape from your lips, in tune to the song. You're singing, you know that, but you don't know why, how, or what. Something inside you just decided to start singing and it's an urge you can't seem to batter down.

At your lyrical participation, the song from down the cave only grows louder and more pronounced. You aren't moving toward it, but whatever it is, it's coming at you, though rather slowly.
>>
>>20924141
ancient frost magic. calling it now.
>>
Part of you is panicking, these are clearly not words you know but you are matching them perfectly with whatever is singing. The other part of you thinks that's fine, normal, nothing to worry about. Which only makes the other part flip the fuck out even harder. You're torn somewhere between breaking into a Disney-esque song and dance routine, and sprinting away while firing blindly over your shoulder.

The song and dance part can go get fucked, you're out of here. Or rather, would be, if the stone beneath your feet hadn't already enveloped you up past the ankles, firmly rooting you in place.

You can only struggle halfheartedly, as the song becomes louder, filling your mind much to the rejoice of the part following along with it.

Though you don't know what it is, where it is, what it's capable of, there is one thing you do know. You're not sure how, or why, or what to make of it, but you just know.

It's her.

At once her song stops, as does your own. Though you can't see her, you know she is there and can most certainly see you. Just beyond the darkness, perhaps so close you could touch.

Close enough, apparently, that you can feel the cold breath on you face.

"Hello, Erik." The ancient witch coos, "I've been waiting for you."
