Monday thread because I've got the next four days off! woohoo. Hospital tomorrow for the routine bullshit, then maybe another thread Thursday?
Anyway. On to why you're here, presumably

==

“Ugh.. .Slider, why are you waking me up at oh-three on a Sunday?” You protest groggily. “You know I don't go to Church.”

“This isn't about Church.” She says, tossing you a pair of BDU bottoms. “It's about squadron. Put the fucking pants on and shut up.”

She'd woken you up in a surprisingly humane way- she just flipped on your room lights and told you to get up in a perfectly calm, normal tone of voice.

Incidentally, her tone of voice was what snapped you to full wakeful alert- she rarely deals with people in a tone like that unless imminent violence is to be done; And she's very good at just about every flavor of violence you know of. Both carefully applied and spread liberally, mischievous and lethal.

In not so many words, she's very adept at hurting people and breaking things. And delights in that ability. And seeks to apply it as frequently as possible.

“So what happened? What are we doing?” you ask, putting on the pants and a pair of boots. The provided BDU shit is 'sterile'- no name tapes, branch tapes, unit patches, or rank markers.

She grins, and her eyes light up with that special spark they get when she's planning something particularly vicious.

“Some of those skanks from Charybdis squadron thought it'd be a good idea to scare up some poison ivy and rub the inside of Goose's strikers with it.” Her grin turns every flavor of cruel you can think of. “Poor kid ended up having to abort Friday and go to sick bay for that bullshit. We're going to pay the bitches back”

She jerks a thumb over her shoulder at ranger bag that's crammed full of...something. “I've got our instruments of revenge in there. How much do you trust me?”

“I... I dunno?” You say doubtfully.

Her grin fades, somewhat. “You big coward. Alright, look. My first plan was to go coat their shit in some CS powder, but that's a bit psycho, even for me. My next plan involves chloroform and drywall. That's all I'm telling you without you saying you're in”

“I have all kinds of reservations about this when you put it like that.” you say doubtfully.

Her grin falls off completely, and her look becomes deadly serious. “No one fucks with my squadron and gets away with it. No one. You in?”

“No one but you, you mean. Yeah, I'm in.” You say as you grab the bag and open it up. “So what's the pla... Slider, what the fuck, man?”

“Walk and talk pilot, we ain't got all day.” she says, stepping out the door and forcing you to jog a bit to catch up.

“Ok, so, chloroform, rags, 550 cord, parachute harnesses, duct tape, and a stuffed bear with an.... ugh. With an EGA on it?” you look up at her again. “Slider, really. What the fuck?”

You practically run into her as she stops and turns around. “You found Gunnybear! Shit, I thought I left him on the boat” she says with a squeal as she snatches the bear. “He's not part of the plan.”

“Ok... so what IS the plan?” You ask for a third time.

“Nothing. I'm driving”

“oh... fuck.”

Slider is not known for her stellar skills behind the controls of a wheeled vehicle. In this case, the vehicle in question is one of the many small pickup trucks the civilian contractors use around the base. The bed holds three roughly door-shaped double sided sections of drywall, all painted the same color as the interior of the student quarters here.

(1/2)
>>
“Slider, what the FUCK is the plan?” you ask again, exasperated. Her eyes never leave the road.

“Their CO and XO weren't really in on it, but they covered for the bitches that did it. We're just going to wall them in. The other four, well. You've seen the flagpoles around the base?”

you nod. “of course”

“Well, my plan was originally to string 'em up by their underwear and let 'em hang for a bit, but they wear little frilly lacy shit, so it'd probably just tear. That's what the parachute harneses are for.”

“ok...”

“The chloroform is so we know they're out cold when we do it. I'll handle that part. You carry in the bag and do the drywall. How quiet can you work?”

“Dunno, it's hanging drywall”

“ok, well, be quiet. Don't want to wake anyone else up”

“and the 550 cord?”

“gonna hogtie 'em. Oh, and to attach 'em to the flag poles.”

She looks over, narrowly avoiding running down some poor bastard.

“you got it? I'll bring 'em back here.”

“I hate to ask, but who else is in on this?” You say, zipping the bag back up.

“Her groundcrew. She and Mav are asleep, but mav's in on the plan. Ice said she'd cover for us if it came back, but unless they ID your ugly ass, I think we're golden” She replies.

“Says the girl wearing... oh, you do have pants on”

“No shit, dumbfuck. We don't wear 'em on duty cos of tradition or some shit, but we don't just fucking wander around in our skivvies all damn day when we're off duty.” She grins. “Plus, ya know, I got tats and shit. Gotta cover them up.”

“Fucking great.”

“Oh, that reminds me. We'll have a passenger to the hangar.”

“...wat?”

“Don't worry. It's fine. Trust me”

“Last time you said that I got shot”

“Quit whining you big baby. It was just a flesh wound and they didn't even take you off flight status”

“ok, so what's plan B?” you ask.

“Pull the fire alarm, then grab 'em when they leave the building.”

“... Awesome. I like this plan! I'm excited to be a part of it!”

“Shut up and quit bitching. We're here”

Sure enough, you are. You say a quick prayer of thanksgiving as you exit the truck and kiss the pavement.

She grabs the bag from you and pulls out the rag and the bottle of chloroform.

“Where'd you get that anyway?” you ask, pulling loose one of the wall sections. They're not that heavy, but fairly cumbersome- you'll have to make multiple trips to do this correctly. “Don't ask questions you don't need to know the answers to.” is her only response.

The duty desk is suspiciously vacant- you're not sure you want to know. “ok, listen. If I come out here and I've got a tail, we're blown, bug out. Get the frames in place before you go back to the truck- there's some glue tubes in there too. Now go. You've got fifteen minutes”

[x] Fifteen? I can be done in ten

“Fifteen's for girlymen. I'll have it done in ten” You say, adopting a terrible Austrian accent as you do so.

“Yeah, cos shorter times are ALWAYS better” Slider mutters. “Just get it done. I want their first reactions in the morning to be what the fuck, over. Got it?”

“Slider, it is morning.” you point out, trying to not bash the drywall panel piece off the railings on the sides of the stairwell.

“The sun isn't up it doesn't count.” she says. She stops you in front of a door. “Ok. This is the one I want you to wall up first. I'm going in the next one over. Once I'm done in there, get that one. You should be able to do this faster than me.”

“Got it”

“Just kinda shove it in place, it'll stick well enough without you needing anything on it” She says, pointing at the door. “Might be kinda tight, though, you may have to use some force.”

“That's what...”

“I swear to all the gods of man if you finish that statement I will skin you and wear you like a suit” She snarls.

“She... said?” You finish.

“Pilots. The fuck is wrong with you people anyway?” she says, slowly opening the door. “get it done”

She wasn't lying, the piece of false wall is cut kind of big, but it wedges in surprisingly easily. You're able to glue it in place before she's done dragging the second limp body out of her first room.

“I should have been a contractor” you say, admiring your handiwork a few minutes later.

“Yep. Hangin drywall and smearin plaster and drinkin beer and forever watching the jets, wishing you were cool like that.” Slider says. “Bullshit your friends, don't bullshit me. Let's go. I want to get some sleep before today”

She's thrown the four offenders in the bed of the truck and draped a tarp over them. You managed to do a duke slide across the hood of the truck and gain the driver's seat before she did- so she's navigating.

“Ok, the first one is big into the whole church thing. Let's go hang her in front of the base chapel.” She says, pointing.

I dunno man. The implication is that Goose was already in the air and had to come back down. Trying to land while severely distracted can't be safe. So that shit's pretty serious. “Yeah...yeah. You know we could have gone to the base commander about this, too. Proper channels?”

She snorts. “What the fuck did I just say? Worst that would have happened is a reprimand, maybe booting back out to a carrier.” She shakes her head. “You weren't on the flight line- you hadn't come back down yet. Mav had to practically carry the kid to sick bay. Girl was in tears- not from the ivy, but because she wasn't able to complete her hop. (now SEALs oh god they are worth their weight in gold).

They can reduce pay, restrict to quarters, plenty of punishments that work, (bread and water is always fun).

Actually, this raises a fair point. We successfully infiltrated an airbase, drugged, and then kidnapped four witches, who are supposed to be a strategic asset without encountering any resistance whatsoever. Where the fuck is security? What if the Soviets had wanted to do this?

I say we just leave them as they are in front of the guardshack with a sign that says "Get better guards".

“It's a lot better, I think, but I'm still out.” You say, shaking your head. “the drywall part I think is about the extent of what I can get away with”

Slider frowns, but nods. “Fair enough. You can hike your happy ass back to your rack, though, I'm keeping the truck.”

“Good thing they aren't new kids” you say, opening the door and stepping out. “There'd be hell to pay in spades if they were younger”

“If they were fifteen, I'd set 'em up in frilly dresses at a card table in the enlisted mess” Slider says. “I'm crazy, but I'm not crazy enough to hang a buncha fifteen year old girls in their underwear up in front of this base.”

“Right, and where the FUCK are the SP fuckers and the jarheads anyway?” You ask as you hand over the keys.
“I already told you. By our hangar. You don't seem to get how important that little revelation of Merlin’s was.” She says.

“Yeah, but we already knew she could do that!”

“No, they didn't. Shit, her academy profile said she could talk to machines, maybe coax an extra ten, maybe fifteen percent effective range out of them. Said she couldn't do almost anything else.” Slider frowns. “If she can augment the gun on your aircraft too... maybe she can do the rest, and just needs some encouragement? If not, there's the possibility that they're passing up more like her.”

She shrugs. “Fuck, talk to Ice if you're that interested. She was always a better student of this shit anyway”

[x] Hunt down Ice- she's probably awake drinking coffee anyway.

You decide to hunt down Ice- but first, you think, it'd probably be an excellent idea to change.

You pull off the BDU top before hitting the duty desk of your building, greeting the marine on duty and showing him your ID. “I was supposed to tell ya, sir, that lieutenant commander Kazanski was looking for you about ten minutes ago.” He says, handing back your ID.

“Great” you respond. “She look pissed?”

The marine shakes his head. “No sir, but she did say she needed to see you ASAP. Said she wanted you to bring your flight gear and meet her out on the line”

“At oh three on a Sunday? What the fuck?”

He shrugs. “No clue, sir.”

“Great. Thanks anyway”

You change directly into your flight suit- fuck it, you think- it's far from correct, but right now you could give less than a shit. Besides, it's supposed to be a day off.

>>

>but first, you think, it'd probably be an excellent idea to change.

Was gonna say.
>>
Not that you're complaining about flying, but still.

The area around the flight line is crawling with security, marines and navy both, and you're stopped and your ID checked a half dozen times before you even get to your hangar.

Inside, Ice, Merlin, and Merlin's family, minus her sister, are talking with Viper and an older gentleman you've only seen once, on the 'chain of command' board back at OCS. The whole building hums with activity, techs and ground crew doing last second checks on your 'cat, as well as the girls' strikers. There's live ammo carts parked near your bird, and as the guards draw you to a halt, you watch as the ordinance techs begin feeding your cat 20mm ammunition.

The Marines on guard here aren't police- they're infantry. Full body armor and assault rifles- not a pistol belt with a baton. Bayonets fixed.

“They wanted to see ya, sir” The one checking your ID says, without taking his eyes off you.

You note that both Merlin and the old man are in flight gear, and there's a second tomcat parked on the ramp, Fuel lines hooked up. Notably, it's also armed- a pair of sidewinders and a pair of sparrows hang from it's wing glove pylons. The insignia on the tail...

“Good morning ladies, gentlemen” you say, walking towards them. “Sorry I'm late”

“D...Did I miss something, sir?” You ask, saluting, then accepting the offered handshake of the CINCPAC

“Probably son. Let's get you up to speed.” he says in a tone far friendlier than you expected.

“Viper?” He says, turning. “Issue a recall on the whole squadron. I want all of them back here, right now. I need you to also call up those air force hippies and get them to get a -10 or two set up to refuel us.”

“yessir” she says, saluting and striding away.

“Good kid. Considered her for the HQ flight, but she'd have been bored to tears.” He says, watching her go. He turns back to you. “alright, son, here's the deal. This is all very highly classified- I'm trusting you here. Couple of hours ago, a red witch made contact with a... network that's in place to assist them in defecting.” He grins. “She wants out. Ice steps in. “She was initially requesting an air force escort, but they can't provide one- their nearest birds are at JB Misawa, and they can't launch because of that earthquake- both runways there are out of commission for at least another week.” She pauses for a second, looking down at some notes. “And the Soviet specifically requested USN escorts.”

“Sounds kinda like a setup” You say, taking the stack of notes and leafing through them. “Try and draw us in and whack us?”

The admiral shakes his head. “She'd have no way of knowing if we were even going to help her, let alone what kind of help we'd be giving her.” He shakes his head again. “No, son, this one is genuine.”

“So what's the plan?” You say for something like the fifth time tonight.
“We're flying, nonstop, to...” Ice is drowned out by the roar of jets and the scream of tires hitting pavement. Merlins folks look at each other, then both head over to the hangar doors and look for the arriving aircraft.

“Nonstop to a patrol anchor 250 miles east of Vladivostok. We'll be refueled en-route by USAF DC-10s, there's two tanker stops.”

she pauses again. “Once... once we're on our anchor, we're considered weapons-free. If our girl has anyone in engagement range of her, we're clear to engage over international waters.”

“Aye, sir.” you say. It isn't your place to question why, you think, just do what you've been told.

“Good boy. Listen, we're not going in alone. I've got every unit under my command on alert. There's two battle groups in the sea of japan right now, and the japs are adding their own to that- they'll be on station to cover us within the hour.” Admiral Richard 'Tricky' Nixon says. “But the first western birds she sees are going to be our 'cats.” He gives you a rare grin. “Think of what that'll mean for your career. Not to mention what it'd mean for your squadron and navy fighter command”

“Yes sir!” you respond, the tension you were feeling beginning to segue into excitement. “what kind of payload are we carrying, sir?”

“Well-” He's cut off by Merlin’s father.

“Your bird is here, Frank” he says, grabbing you by the shoulder.

“Best go see it son. It's worth it” Nixon says.

He isn't lying. The cat's already being towed into the hangar, her ferry crew riding along with the tug.

Merlin's dad starts talking as she looks at it, goggle-eyed.

[x]... well, guess we'll see how fast I can familiarize myself in flight, then.

“I guess we'll see if I’m a fast learner, then” You say, walking around the bird, running your fingers over her cool skin, and frowning. “That's... not steel.” you say.

Merlin's dad grins. “fibersteel. Newest thing. It's what we call a RAM- radar absorbent material. It's also lighter- this bird weighs about ten percent less than your B model and..”

“And her engines kick out...oh good lord dad.” Merlin says

He grins. “We got hold of Pratt and Whitney for the engines. These are the ones they're using for the ATF Flyoff birds. Again: I'll spare you the details, but you're going to have to watch your throttle. You can very, very easily exceed your maximum velocity if you're not careful.”

“yeah...” You mutter. “what's with these exhausts?”

“They're vectored. You'll probably be the first jet pilot to use a thrust-vectored aircraft in combat” He says.

“She can haul the new AMRAAM” Merlin's mom says, stepping in. “she can also haul a pretty respectable air to ground package, but that's not important right now”

“Well, sir. I... I think I'm in love” You say, dreamily.

Nixon laughs. “I'm sure there's plenty of ladies who'd be heartbroken to hear it.”

“What... what am I carrying, sir?”

“Well, son, I figured I'd leave that to you. You'll have to do without the old AIM-7s, though. And you'll need those external tanks they've got fitted.”

“There's ten hardpoints on this cat” Merlin's mom says. “We've got external tanks fitted to the engine nacelles, same as you're used to for normal patrols. That leaves the four wing glove mounts and the four center line points.”

“I'd suggest skipping any -54s” Nixon says. “We probably won't need them”

4 AMRAAMs, 4 AIM-9 Sidewinders

4 120's and 4 9's.

-54 is super long range radar guided, -120 is medium/long radar guided, -9 is short range IR guided.
>>
>>20954048

AIM-54 is a big heavy bastard of a dual-mode (it's semi-active for most of it's flight until it goes terminal, iirc) radar-guided missile designed for taking down bombers from 100+ miles away. It's not very maneuverable though, and it probably won't work very well against small agile targets like fighters or witches.

The AIM-9 sidewinder is a close-range heater.

The AIM-120 AMRAAM is a medium range (30-50 miles) radar-guided missile with an active seeker head, and is very good at just about everything.
>>
>>20954048

sure.

for our purposes, the AIM-54 Phoenix is a long range missile, designed mostly to intercept and kill big shit from far away. real world, it was never really successful, and the F14 was the only bird to carry it.

the AIM-120 AMRAAM is the US's next-generation replacement from the sparrow with a while shitload of improvements. medium-long range, but it's deadly as hell.

the AIM-9 is a short range, heat seeking missile. the model you have isn't the best shortrange missile in the world, but it's effective and has gone through upgrades since it's inception.

AIM-120 AMRAAM is the newest, shiniest radar-guided missile. Long effective range. AIM-54 is the Phoenix. Utterly gratuitous, has a tendency to not work right, has an over 100 mile range. Aim-9 Sidewinder is a heatseeking missile for dogfighting.

...wait, I just realized something.

Our RIO, nicknamed "Merlin", has been using her magical powers to boost our AtA capability.

Goddamn it, we have a wizard casting Magic Missile flying in our plane.
>>
>>20954259
No, you git, she's a witch.
>>
>>20953997
Phoneixes are probably redundant; if we have AMRAAMS and witch sparklies,a fter all.

6 AMRAAMS and 2 Sidewinders for backup.
>>
>>20953997
what about bombs. those are always fun

>mfw we went from potentially ending our career to boosting beyond measure

Imagine what Nixon would have been like if we had gotten caught stringing the witches up the flagpoles when he sent for us.

(looks like the general consensus was 4 scorpions and 4 sidewinders)

“Four 120s and 4 9s, I think, sir” you say, nodding. “plus the gun load, of course.”

Nixon grins- you seem to recall a story about him making a kill with a spotter plane, once upon a time. “good choice, son. Good choice.”

“Frank!” you hear Merlin squeal with glee. “Frank you should...oh, oh, Frank you should see this.”

“She sounds happy.” you hear Slider say as she walks in, escorted by a pair of marines.

“Yeah, yeah. She's probably hyperventilating with glee up there.” You say, noting that your RIO's clearly using her sparkle wonderful powers to talk to the bird.
“Well, good. Oh, I saw maverick and goose on the way in boss.” she says, turning to Ice. “They're on their way.”

“Good” Ice says. “Slider, we need to talk. You mind?” Slider shrugs and Ice looks at you. “Frank, go see what Merlin's on about, you need to be up to speed.”

“Good plan” you respond, climbing up the ladder into the cockpit and... whoa.

They weren't kidding when they said it was different.

Gone are the 400 fucking dials and knobs and switches- they've been replaced by several flat multifunction displays. Your stick has been moved to the right, your throttles are still on the left- and your HUD is about half again a big as your old one.

Merlin's dad climbs up and rests on the ladder next to you. “We basically copied the YF-22's cockpit for this” he says. “The MFDs up here can display whatever you need them to, and your RIO can send you display data on this smaller one here” he points to where the stick used to be.” He grins. “We also improved the datalink system and a whole bunch of things that Merlin is probably trying to decide if she loves more than that cake”

“I don't know, sir, it's really good cake” you say.

He laughs. “Of course. She's got a new radar, top of the line stuff. Phased-array doppler, with a dedicated computer to it. New electronic defensive suite, new chaff/flare launchers, and better radios, while we were at it.”

“I can't help but notice you improved forward visibility, too” you say, somewhat dryly.

“Of course. The canopy is a new kind of synthetic, now. We also improved on the ejection sequence.”

“Awesome”

“Son, I hate to cut you short, but we need to go. Our girl's going to launch in 18 hours.” Nixon says. “and our first fuel point is just south of Elmendorf.”

“Elmendorf, sir?”

“Air force base. In Alaska. They're going to have 15s up.”

“Bah. Air force”

Nixon laughs, and looks over at Ice, who's mounting her striker stand.

“Time to go, son” He says, looking back up at you. “Let's not mess this up”

I'm looking at a second thread, possibly Thursday, but for the evening, I think I'm about tapped out.

Sorry about not delivering air combat, I did kind of promise. I'm sure you can guess when it'll be next, though!

thanks, guys. see you Thursday, fates permitting!
