Yes! After a long hiatus of system development, rebalancing, and play testing I have returned once again. Just like last time, we set out to make this project with the goal of enjoying the setting of Five Nations without having to deal with the crap that bogged down the series.

Come and see the forums here:
http://worldoffivenations.proboards.com/

I have the newest version of the system, v3, up and available to DL to everyone who joins. If you don't want to sign up I'll have a DL link in just a little bit.

Come see the old Quests here:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=five+nations

Everyone is welcome to come and chat with us, both when we aren't running the Quest and when we are, on suptg's IRC at #fivenationsgeneral.

I'll be starting us up soon.

Bump for anticipation.

You are Satashi Sotomura, a Chunin of the Hidden Sand. Though you struggled for the majority of your Genin career you finally managed to find success in the field of puppetry. Your excellent chakra control and great intellect gave you the ability to manipulate "Mushi", a simple humanoid puppet that you built right before your Chunin Exam.

Did you build a ranged puppet, a melee puppet, or a tricky puppet?
>>
>>20950892
Make him an Iron Maiden type thingy, so that it can open its oversized limbs up like containers, and then close them around enemy body parts to puncture the shit out of them with a corrosive poison.
>>
A Melee puppet.
>>
Hey! I remember this, we were playing a mist ninja with a salamander sword and Kimimaru hand. What happened in the end? My computer took a dump on me and I never got to see the end.
>>
>>20950892
Define "tricky." Otherwise, melee is fine; at least someone else will take the hits for us.
>>
>>20950892
We will have a Run DMC puppet. Tricky!
>>
>>20950892
A melee type with some clever tricks to it?
>>
>>20950947
CLEAVER tricks to it.

As in make it use a meat cleaver.

That cleaves things.
>>
>>20950892
We could always just split the difference between melee and tricky. Use some bombs to lay traps, then lay into them. It'll have extra utility than just cleaving things.
>>
Why use puppets? Sasori is the best puppet master, and the Gaara family has Sand.
I want to do something cooler.
>>
>>20950920
Check the archives listed earlier in the thread. Should have the end there for ya to catch up on.

>>20951047
I'll accept this, but still...
>>
>>20951053
If you think Sasori is the be all end all of puppets, you don't know the TRUE potential of things-on-strings.
>>
>>20951091
The meat cleaver is fine.

>>20951091

So we seem to want a half-way point between tricky and melee. That'll work.

You worked hard and engineered your puppet to be durable and capable in melee, grafting a pair of hidden cleavers in its forearms as well as a cloak around its shoulders to hide its motion. Finally, you gave its chest the ability to unhinge and release the "light tag" on it, blinding those who stayed close and fought your puppet in hand to hand. In fact, it was that dirty trick that won you the Chunin Exams.

You, of course, are well versed in the shinobi ways and have several unique capabilities to yourself. What are your Unique Abilities?

(For the record, you have 2 total UA's. They come in several different flavors now. A Unique Ability can be either an Aspect, a passive bonus (the weakest of the UAs), a Style (a unique modification on a single action, such as Puppet use), a Downtime (an action you perform between missions to allow you to do unique character actions when not in battle), a Mode (a character transformation), or a Gambit (a powerful singleshot attack that costs both Grit and Chakra.) )
>>
>>20951133
UA1 Aspect, being able to take the Tactician role even outside of formation.

Or one that lets us take both Tactician and Melee specialist at the same time, but since we're sand the first idea will probably see more use.
>>
>>20951133

Something that would allow us to repair our puppet on the fly.

Also maybe some illusion abilities? the usual strategy is to defeat the puppet master, so lets make it hard for them to find us
>>
>>20951133
How about Style and Gambit? Seems to go what we are going for?
>>
>>20951198
I like the idea of being able to repair on the fly.
>>
>>20951188
>>20951198
>>20951231

Repairing the puppet is a great idea. Though they are extremely durable they don't heal naturally and usually take 1 Downtime action (which is about a week) to complete repairs. They are pretty durable, however. How about something like...

Field Repairs (UA1, Aspect, Requires 0 Grit): You gain the ability to repair your puppet. Restore an amount of Injury of a single puppet adjacent to you equal to your Puppetry Skill Ranks multiplied by your Ninjutsu. You may do this as a full round action.

As for a Gambit, we could build our character around a low level Gambit and just use a bunch of subsequent UA's to improve that one move.
>>
>>20951133
UA2 Style for Evasion that reduces the partial actions of a knowledge check by 1 and allows us to move our puppet adjacent to whoever attacked us, or make a basic attack if it's already in range.
>>
>>20951260
I'm partial to the Aspect mentioned in >>20951188, mostly because I'm a sucker for versatility and having a say in what we can do.
>>
>>20951198
A smart man doesn't need genjutsu to hide
>>
also i had an idea for a weapon.

They're like gauntlets, with oversized backhands. Using a spring or something, the backhand segment can be launched. Blades extend out from it mid flight, and we use puppetry strings to fly it like a kite. a kite that cuts people up.

The blades can also extend while the section is still attached to the glove portion.

The launched section could also be manipulated like a yoyo for close quarters
lots of string tricks, and the blades would spin like a buzz saw
>>
>>20951369
That sounds like a really cool idea for our second puppet. Like, a really off the beaten path idea. We should definitely save this and use it for Puppet 2, which we will gain on our next rank up.
>>
>>20951382
armor puppetry?

like a alternate parallel of Sasori's body puppets
>>
>>20951260
I'd like a Gambit, but I'm not sure which one to go with.
>>
>>20951423
If we used a Gambit it would be some sort of big single attack. A good example of a Gambit would be little kid Naruto's Rasengan. He later gets it as a regular Jutsu, but when he's little it's a Gambit. It requires Grit and Chakra to use.

In the most recent build of our Protagonist from FNG1 I made his ability to bisect people a Gambit at low levels and built on it. That's one path we can go on. Probably a good way to do it would be to use our strings to either hold someone or do something like throw weapons at them or something. But I want the idea to come from you guys!

If we go with the Repair UA, we still have a UA2 Slot open.
>>
Have you all looked into the Narutod20 system at all?
>>
>>20951476
I did, and I never really enjoyed it. But it's a great thing to look at as well! I don't want to make it seem like I'm slandering it, it's just not my favorite.
>>
Why play this when you could play a Fairytail type quest?
>>
>>20951547
Why not play both?
>>
Building from a Chunin Gambit sounds good to me.

Question is... What will it do?
>>
>>20951628
That's the A-ranked question.
>>
>>20951564
Because there would be no interest because /tg/ has no tase

Today begins your second week as a Chunin. The first week was filled mostly with dull paperwork, some official ceremonies, and of course the only exciting part; the arrival of your flak jacket and license.

Though you haven't been given any official missions yet, you know it's only a matter of time. After all, the ravages of the Second Shinobi World War have finally really started to take their toll now that peace has been reestablished. Though there were no clear victors it was believed that Konohagakure emerged the least harmed, though they did suffer a great many losses as did the rest of the world. However, rumors of a terrifying trio of shinobi, the Legendary Sannin, have even reached the safety of Sunagakure's walls and have caused your elders to fly into a panic.

Despite that, your life has been relatively unchanged. Your brutal training has left you well equipped to handle most situations. As you walk up to the mirror and wipe your face to brush away the sleep you see the burn on the middle of your forehead placed there by your rival, Kazuko Takeda. That show-off placed this burn as a show of his superiority when he beat you in the Group Stage in one on one combat before your squad routed his and forced him to retreat.

The day is long and open before you. Money is tight so personal spending isn't advised. What shall we do?
>>
>>20952173
Mmhm. Do we know anyone other then Kazuko? Because we should totally go hang.
>>
>>20952173
>your squad
We should check out our partners and see how they look in their snazzy new jackets. We're legit now, so the least we can do is congratulate each other. Are they nearby?
>>
>>20952238
We certainly do know a few other people. Though some of our peers are still Genin, and others are dead, we have a small core of friends still left.

Hiro Nanto- Our oldest friend and comrade, Hiro grew up alongside us. He is related to you through marriage, so you've always been called brothers.

Daisuke Hito- The only son left of a family of criminal shinobi, Daisuke was adopted into the village mostly because he fosters a Kekkei Genkai and is the last of his family. He's a loner and was often mocked in youth. However, in the Chunin exams the team of you, Daisuke, and Hiro tore through all of your competition thanks largely to your genius and his combat prowess.

Koji Asanami- Though he wasn't part of your team, and in fact was teamed up with Kazuko, Koji is still a close friend of yours. He's the most simple minded of your circle of friends and it's a wonder to you that he even made Chunin.
>>
>>20952368

Yeah, lets go hang with our team.
>>
>>20952368
We should show up to Hiro and Daisuke with Mushi wearing our new jacket. It's only fair the puppet gets some credit.
>>
>>20952412
I like this idea.

>This Caphere
That too, Captcha
>>
What is Hiro's bloodline ability?
>>
>>20952408
I second this. It's time to meet our bros.
>>
>>20952475
You mean Daisuke.
>>
>>20952494
Not that guy, but the question still stands
>>
>>20952537
The GM didn't say he had one.
>>

I think he means 'What can Hito and Hiro do'.

You wander out of your house, raising the collar on the robe most shinobi of this village wear outside due to the blistering winds. Mushi rests on your shoulders idly in a familiar position as you trudge through the hot winds. As you pick through the village you notice a few changes from the war's end, namely the massive reduction in armed guards and war-ready shinobi patrolling the village as well as a huge drop of Mirage Agents patrolling, hunting for spies. You climb the stairs down into a much cooler room where plush cushions surround tables, many of the older male shinobi laying around smoking and chatting over coffee.

In the furthest part of the establishment you see your squadmates with your former Jonin leader. The old woman smiled at you as she lit another cigarette and your friends raised their hands in greeting. "I was just here congratulating your comrades on a very good showing at the Exams. I sent my cat to get you, but I think she may have gotten bored. Anyway, congratulations, Satoshi!" She said with a matronly smile as she patted your shoulder.

"So, Satoshi, what do you want to do now that you're a Chunin? Me? I'm shooting for Mirage!" Hiro says proudly as he places his thumb against his chest and laughs, "Yep, with my awesome skills no way I can't become Mirage Commander in a week after joining, isn't that right, Sensei!?" he says eagerly as the old woman smiles, "Of course, Hiro." Daisuke holds back a chuckle as his shock of white hair shakes slightly, his pitch black eyes showing mirth. Hiro, despite his good nature, was a bit of a dork, but he was impossible for you to not like. Others seemed to share the same feeling.
>>
>>20952618
Grin and roll our eyes. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves, Hiro. Baby steps."
>>
>>20952618
"I haven't really given it much thought, I'm pretty open to whatever ends up coming my way."
>>
Is Chiyo still around?
After Sasori she was the best Puppet master; we could learn from her.
>>
>>20952618
"Heh, thanks." And laugh. "mmhmn...Maybe I'll try to find a nice girl and have some kids?" Laugh again and shrug. "Can't take it too fast, Hiro!"
>>
>>20952712
Far as I remember, this is a mildly alternate continuity, never mind a different time period than the manga. Don't expect any canon characters.
>>
>>20952668

>>20952712
>>20952720

Hiro laughs again and drinks his coffee as your teacher smiles on. The old woman, Rina, was always a gentle presence in your life. "Well, if you're so open to ideas, maybe you should join Mirage yourself? It's a dangerous life, but it's very rewarding from what I've heard. However, I'm sure you'll be given plenty of work in a little while. So much so you'll be begging for a rest."
>>
>>20952876
"Maybe if they ask me first..."
>>
>>20952876
"Rewarding...with cash, right?"
>>
>>20952876
"We'll worry about that in due time. At least for now, let's enjoy ourselves before Kazuko shows up. I'll bet he'll be looking for something to rub in someone's face, even if his team got routed."
>>
>>20952962
Which Reminds me, I've gotta get this vest on Mushi.
>>
>>20952962
>>20953016
>>20952957
>>20952940

Rina laughed, "Yes, they usually do pay you." She said with a smile. "How do you feel about this? I have a mission tomorrow that I need a partner for, would you like to accompany me, Satoshi? Daisuke said that you were the one who commanded the team, and if you are the leader, then I may find use for you." She said with a smile.

Daisuke gave you a thumbs up as he nodded, "What can I say, Satoshi, you did a great job out there. We never would have had a chance against Kazuko." He said and laughed at your comment, "Probably." As he said so, however, he turned and saw the man himself walk into the cafe. "Ah damnit." Daisuke said, gripping the table tightly. "I don't want to deal with him." He grumbled.

Kazuko looked around like a lord surveying his territory, spotted you, and tapped his forehead, almost mockingly as he winked at you. The young man was blessed with looks, talent, and a good family. And he still became an insufferable asshole. You never liked him, even from minute one. Fortunately, this opinion was shared by most people.
>>
>>20953215
Let the disdain drip from our tone.
"Congratulations on making chunin, *Takeda.* Where's Koji?"

>sand essmaAd
It's not like we can help it, Captcha.
>>
>>20953215
"Sure, Rina-sensei." nod. Now...can we use Mushi to disguise itself as a waiter?
>>
>>20953279
Also, if Kazuko gets excessively uppity, rattle Mushi at him like a voodoo priest with his doll. "Away with you, foul beast" and all that.
>>

>>20953312

Mushi could be disguised as a waiter. Kazuko strolled over and smiled, "Well hello, Satoshi. It's good to see you've gotten over your little burn. And I see you have your boyfriends here to back you up. Koji's off napping somewhere, I'm sure. Why, what's he got to do with you?" The young man said as he casually unbuttoned his sleeve, an action that he did before he would start a fight.
>>
>>20953471
"Just want to find out about a friend." And lets go to a bathroom break and leave with Mushi as a waiter so he can pour some scalding hot tea into his lap. Or drop a burning tea-bun onto his forehead.
>>
>>20953471
"Nothin' to do with you, that's all you need to worry about. Go on back to your estate if there's nothing for you here." Make sure to show our back to Kazuko so Mushi can stare him dead in the eye.
>>
>>20953533
>>20953502

"Oh yeah? Let's see what you and that piece of wood of yours can do." He called, "How about it, smartass, let's take this outside." he said, punching his fist with a sneer. Rina looked on with a smile and chuckled. "Well, Satoshi?"
>>
>>20953759
Send Mushi at him before he has time to react.

Visibly roll our eyes at the table. "We already had our fight, Kazuko. Normally, I'd tell you to save your breath and energy." Turn around and look him in the eye. "But I guess I can humor you one more time. Let's go, scrub." Walk past him outside.
>>
>>20953789
You curl your fingers and the puppet leaps to life instantly, its cleavers clicking into place with a nasty sound as it rushes towards Kazuko. He sees the attack coming and cocks his fist back, his hand glowing golden as he calls out, "Hand of G..." However, as these forces prepare to collide you feel a strong force around your arms, around your puppet which freezes and around Kazuko's neck. From seemingly nowhere three massive cats, more like lions, appeared with their tails wrapped around you, their fierce fangs and claws only inches away. "Not in here, please." Rina says calmly as she sips from her coffee. "I like this place too much to turn it into a brawling zone. If you want to fight, take it to the right place.'
>>
>>20953789
Nah. We'll do this like gentlemen, at least before we take a meat cleaver to his head. We like this place, and we don't wanna ruin it.
>>
>>20953860
Leave it to 4chan to hang up and not post for me for a few minutes. Ah well. I'll repeat my notion in >>20953831.
>>
>>20953910

Pushing away from the cat he nods and walks outside with you. Rina raises her hood and gestures, "Come come, we're going to take this to the truly proper place, not brawl in the street like children." She said, heading towards the Kazekage office. The top of the Kazekage office was long a place for meetings, trysts, and other such affairs, but it was also the most popular fighting spot in the village. When the First Kazekage learned of it he installed the guard rail that currently lines the roof so no one would lose the fight due to a clumsy fall.

The winds were even stronger up here as Kazuko faces you, unbuttoning his shirt and dropping it as he takes a martial arts pose, the outline of tattoos all over his pale form. His right hand, however, has black tattoos all over it and he smiles, "Come on, punk, let's see what you can do." He said, rolling his shoulders.
>>
>>20953860
Well, I guess we'll take it outside now.
>>
>>20953976
Send Mushi in to pressure him a little bit and get some o'dat Tai Know.
>>
>>20953976
Unleash Mushi from out back and let him stand at attention next to us, rattling menacingly at Kazuko?

What do we know Kazuko can do? I'd recommending sticking to basics and launching Mushi at him, flanking him between our puppet's cleavers and our ninjutsu.
>>
>>20953980
>>20954012
>>20954016

We've seen Kazuko do exactly two things. Punch things with his strength and do something called "Hand of Glory", where his tattoos turn golden and his hand becomes stupidly hot. It also becomes really hard to dodge since the air is distorted from the heat.

We're faster than he is, and can get the first move, but the last time we fought you stayed too defensive and he slipped his fist past your guard. This time, however, you have your new trick, your kunai flurry trick, the Dance Macabre. Unfortunately you need to get a little more hyped up to use it.
>>
>>20954046
Then yeah, let's harrass him with Mushi before he gets the God Hand going, and if he tries to make a move on us, launch some ninjutsu at him.
>>
Well, I think we should let Mushi do that neat rattling thing before going out to tango so we can get a Tai Know and try for a Flash once we have enough Grit for Dance Macabre
>>
>>20954046
We could use our first turn to just fire up, I suppose, if we're confident in our ability to dodge.
>>
Rolled 9, 10, 4, 4, 1, 3 = 31

>>20954093
>>20954087
>>20954084

You roll your shoulders and align yourself with Mushi's movements very slightly before shooting it forward. Kazuko smiles as he sees it coming, raising his fist and shifting his stance a little, "Come get some!" He called out as Mushi spins and slashes at the young man's arm and chest at the same time.

(We're trying to get 5 or less on the dice. We have 3 Automatic successes added onto the attack)
>>
>>20954093
We're smarter than that, though. We're not THAT hot-blooded; it's too damn hot to be hot-blooded, hence our cool leadership skills.
>>
>>20954127
Total of 6 successes.

The cleavers find their targets and Kauzo winces in pain as he failed to shift away from the puppet. Ducking his head he shoots past your puppet, running at you now, his fists readied as he cocks his hands back, ready to attack.

(We rolled 6d10, a number equal to our Ninjutsu stat. The target number is 5, which is our Rank+2. We added 3 automatic successes from our Skills onto the roll. As anyone can see who was in the first two quests, this is a much different system.)
>>
>>20954132
We aren't hotblooded at all, which is why we need to Fire Up to make our gambit hurt. That's strategy.
>>
Rolled 4, 1, 8, 8, 5 = 26

>>20954178

(Now, Kazuko is going to attack you with a Taijutsu attack. Before we could make a knowledge check as a free action. However, in the new system it takes a full round action. We, however, are Brilliant thanks to our trait, which allows us to do it in only a partial action. I'm rolling to attack now).
>>
Rolled 9, 10, 3, 3, 7 = 32

>>20954213
(I got 6 total successes, roll to defend? Our evasion defense is the same as our puppetry. 6d10+3 ASB)

>>20954225
Evasion time!
>>
>>20954225
>>20954355
(It's a tie! However, in Five nations, a tie is always in the attacker's favor. So now we suffer some damage. We take a total of 3 damage, thanks to our awesome Flak Jacket sucking up a lot of damage. It's a good thing he took his off)

As he darts in and punches you jump away, his fist just barely catching you in the stomach, nothing serious, just enough to drive the wind from you.

(It's our turn now. We have 2 partial actions. What do?)
>>

>>
>>20954420
>>20954426
>>20954447

You scan over his swing, his footwork, his speed, and get familiarized with it. Not a big deal, he's a hair faster than he was when you last fought, but he's still within your ability to handle. You are no great shakes at Taijutsu, but neither is he. He's a slightly above average fighter with a Clan technique that's very powerful.

With a few finger manipulations Mushi rushes towards Kazuko's back. As he turns around, his fist wheeling to smash your puppet, you dip it lower than he is used to going, overbalancing him and causing him to step forward unnecessarily. A big mistake.

(Go ahead and roll attack. Now, since we completed a Knowledge Check against him, we gain +2 ASB when he defends with Taijutsu, which he is going to)
>>

Mushi rushes in and as Kazuko tries to defend your puppet's chest panel bursts open and flashes blinding light in his eyes. He tries to look away but gets blinded, yelling out in pain as his retinas are scorched.

He turns around, still blind, and swings blindly at you.

(You still get that bonus +2 ASB to defend.)

His swing is a clear miss as you jump away easily. He swings again, not knowing that you aren't in front of him. "Get back here, you cheater!" He calls, his right arm's tattoos going from black to gold as his arm bursts alive with energy.

(It's your turn again, and you have a total of 4 Grit. Ready to slap him with the goodness?)

I do not like that roll, but...Sure, and using that two grit.

+3+2

You know that trick Kankuro likes to use, where he has his puppet pose as himself while he hides?

We should try doing the reverse, pretending to be our own puppet and charging in, like we don't know what we ar doing. and when they rush past to attack 'the puppeteer', they get a face full of cleaver instead

Rolled 6, 2, 5, 3, 7, 9 = 32

Ahem.

Rolled 5, 10, 4, 2, 2, 9, 3, 9, 3 = 47

Let's spend all our Grit (that's 4, right?) on the Dance Macabre.
6 Nin + 3 Puppetry for 9d10, +2 ASB for the extra 2 grit.
>>
>>20954636
spending grit adds to our ASB, not our dice pool.

but 5 hits is fine by me regardless.

Rolled 6, 3, 5, 9, 5 = 28

>>20954635

(You got 3 hits. +3+2+2= 10. The defense is)

I guess I read the syntax wrong.

(Less than stellar. He suffers 10 damage and -7 ASP to "Defend" against you, and -14 to "Defend" against the Puppet. This means, effectively, he's unable to defend against your puppet.)

As he flails around blindly you release your puppet, attach kunai to the ends of your string and begin slashing away like mad. Though your blows aren't powerful, and certainly don't leave a lot of visible harm, you've cut tendons, sliced veins, and in general slowed him down and weakened him to the point of his defenses being virtually non-existent.

"That's enough." Rina called out, "One more attack like that and he's going to be dead. While I support the beliefs of the village, we don't want his family to complain to the Kazekage." She said and walked over to the young man, touched his eyes and closed her eyes for a moment, healing his wounds as she smiled. "There you go, dear. Now, go run along." She said, firmly, as he put his shirt back on and sneered, "Lucky fight, Satoshi."

After he passed she laughed and ushered you towards her, "Very nicely done. I can see that my choice in bringing you along with me tomorrow is well placed. Very good. We will be leaving early in the morning, so be sure to ready yourself for a hard journey!" She encouraged with a smile. With that she put her fingers to her lips and vanished in a puff of sand.

(And with that we're gonna have to call it for tonight. I need some rest and we're a little slow. We'll pick this up tomorrow when I go to work. Thank you all for playing! I'll archive this before I go.)

Can't wait for the next one!
