There actually was a cemetery for the members of your noble house unlike the soldiers, the reason for that being that too much of your sword-at-arms dies each assignment to warrant a small space for a proper resting ground, and right now you finished the long walk there, the path of gravels almost concealed amidst discarded pieces of woods and overgrown patch of grasses jutting out here and there, getting there took you a good 30 minutes, nearing the end of the territory used for training, built in the large forest right outside the mansion and merchant square.

It took some time to find some proper clothes to cover Mylen wings, although you found yourself confined on the top floor by a member of those red cloaked individuals it only took a few minutes for a rain cloak to be issued by a maid (that almost choked when she saw the wings on your bodyguard) and thus garbed, Mylen set forth at your side for the cemetery, cutting straight through the drilling ground with the fear that Siegfried Shieffer would be recognized abated by the fact that none of the soldiers know who you are: those that did are dead.

The rumor of your bodyguard being in good health might actually help moral, but since you are bringing her with you… Well, one thing is certain: the Shieffer house won’t be part of the reinforcement, too much has been lost in the civil war, out of all the noble families yours was definitely the one that suffered the biggest losses, but the tradeoff was glory now that the king has reaffirmed his authority.

Ah but enough about this, you came here for a reason after all.

At your left, Mylen silent silhouette walked in perfect synchronization, her long dark hair almost grazing the floor, concealing her wings under the cloak she had to hug them to properly stop them moving which meant that she couldn’t come armed but even with the frustration this inconvenience gave her, nothing betrayed her bored façade.

One could say that she also brought you misery with the ultimatum she presented you with Avina, you had the chance to fester enough frustration to gain any amount of animosity toward her and blame the Yuki-Onna death. She would have accepted it, probably even take some small joy in the fact she’d lessen your burden, but instead you went and shared a bed with her and just now starting to realize that you’ve fallen for the Youko.

Even if she’s a mystery just as incredible your immunity and hunger for corruption.

The link with the Hero is still there, strong and constant, she doesn’t seem to be suffering or in any kind of distress but… you miss her, even if having Radiance is stunning, you want to speak with your holy bodyguard too.

This isn’t like her, you’re approaching the cemetery now, some old decorations lie son the path and the ground itself actually look like something that has been worked once.

With a small amount of dread in your guts, you look back to the woman who, for once, isn’t fearlessly staring back at you, it’s pretty obvious why you feel afraid: looking at the tomb of your mother would all but cement the fact of her departing, it might be shallow but that’s how you feel right now.

She look down and actually put a hand on her elbow, hugging herself with both pain and regret flashing on her face, her guard all but completely down, in a way this succubus look incredibly lovely, she… did she ever look this vulnerable before?

The prompt for reminiscing can certainly feel random at time, but right now, standing in front of your mother grave you remember a certain event with your uncle, a story he told you about a time impossible for you to remember concerning your mother.

It was around the end of summer, with autumn starting to properly settle, bringing much needed refreshment in the air and coloring the nearby forest in the loveliest shades of oranges, reds and similar colors, the evening marking the end of the day training and administration, not that you had to do the latter but you managed to catch your uncle enjoying a drink in the old archery range, your mother and Mylen had ran off… somewhere.

‘’I’m sorry for not being able to give you any kind of gift Siegfried, I’ve been busy, but I wish you a happy birthday, I’ll make it up to you in the future’’

You remember silently sitting beside your uncle, he was a tall, fit and charismatic man sporting a dark beard and hair who were slowly starting to gray, a powerful and strong face accompanied a ruthless stare that scared you as a kid, but with time you learned that he was a very gentle man, and an incredibly driven one as well.

The two of you shared a drink in silence, you didn’t often find the opportunity to speak with the man and now that the purge and your episode as the Butcher over and buried, your mother forced you to ‘’relax’’ for the following months which you can’t say was a bad idea, but now that you’ve grown older it’s time to stop lazing or, as she put it ‘’recovering’’.

‘’How about I tell you a story concerning your mother?’’

He looked to you with a smile as he finished his drink; there was no need to refuse.

Mana Shieffer wasn’t always the loving, caring and rather stubborn mother you remember as a child, apparently when she transferred into your uncle estate she was violent, depressed and very keen on isolating herself, going as far as damning the fact she was pregnant multiple times and being a very problematic person, after all given her obscene amount of power she could have been quite the time bomb.

Of course, Gismore tried to give her solace, but the real heroes of this story, as he put it, are the maids of the estate for they willingly and patiently nursed the young Mana by slowly increasing company day by day along the foods and books requested by her, the result was phenomenal for, at the very least, her violent outburst calmed dramatically after a month, although she never departed with her animosity toward her unborn child.

Such thinking didn’t change after you were born, Gismore made certain to spare no expense to alleviate the burdens but it seem that Mana relapsed and your uncle started to fear that she may very well stay closed for a long, long time but he made the error of tip toeing around her, after all Mana magical aptitude with fire was more than downright scary, it was beyond the level of a siege weapon.

Then how exactly could such a person change so much? Again, it was the efforts of the maids, with your mother wanting absolutely nothing to do with you, the task feel to the women of the mansion and, day by day, each of the girl purposely talked about how the young baby boy and how easy it was to take care of him for he cried rarely, even Gismore was surprised at your apparent calm and posed personality without being older than six months. The hope of the actors in the mansion was to nurture her curiosity with gentle prodding with conversations that Mana would overhear everyday about her young son.

It goes without saying that you have absolutely no recollection of any of this and for once your forced amnesia is not to blame, Gismore kept talking with obvious warmth and fondness in his tone despite the rather depressing picture his story gave you, along with the incredible disbelief because Mana… your mother isn’t the woman he’s been describing at all.

When did the change occur? Your uncle can’t answer such a question; it would take until you learned how to walk, for Mana to finally start wandering the mansion instead of completely secluding herself, she would sometime see some of the maids with you walking into the fields before she’d go back to her previous activity, it was, again, a slow progress, one that Gismore missed for trouble had to call him away from the mansion for a good 2 months.

You remember that he stopped there and took a large drink, grinning broadly, filled with nostalgia.

He stop there, you could only look at him in brief wonder as he rubbed a tear out of his eye.

‘’If there’s one truth I’ve learned in all my years, Siegfried, it’s that whatever you are, be it human, monster, demon or angel, the very basic of being human means that time bring changes you and I may not stay the men we are now in a few years just like you aren’t wearing your mask right now’’

Gismore wasn’t a man of speech, unlike you, he never was really gifted with words, but you listened to his small speech your old uncle looked weary, but amiable all the same.

‘’As long as the heart stay true, I think you can live with your head held high, some things must stay the same because they’ll always be precious’’

With these words, your uncle bid you good night and you found yourself with a newfound respect for the man whom was always a quiet presence for a good part of your life.

The distance is only a few steps, a few hours ago she was still struggling with her corruption but now she’s standing in front of the grave of your mother, her wings still do an odd twitch here and there but when you close in on her, she doesn’t run and you let go of your sword, gently wrapping your arm around her shoulder although, you spot a smile, your hand lightly brush the elastic flesh of her wings before she embrace you in turn.

Her hair is truly soft… and your peripheral vision spot the movement of those red-black leather moving to cocoon you in, yet not touching your body while the slightly taller warrior has closed her eyes once more, with a faint humid trail traveling down the corners of her eyes.

Just like you, you’re feeling them.

If you had to speak on a volume higher than a whisper, your voice would crack, but your rage boil inside, not all men can say they had a good, loving mother that they loved with all they’re heart, but you certainly did and the injustice of having her taken away from you…

Just like Avina, it’s enough to change your priorities, change your heart, like your uncle put it.

‘’But not now. There's too much that needs to be done, too many people depending on me.’’

A fluffy tailed lover, a queen, a whole country of monsters facing injustice, you have so much more to do, and the present must be where you look because your future is short.

A small laugh escape the girl, her voice croak slightly and her body shake briefly but by now, neither of you are hiding tears, Mylen is camouflaging herself with her hair and putting her head on your shoulder while you look around the cemetery, wondering if your ancestors are watching.

The largest furniture of the room is, without a doubt, the uselessly large queen sized bed that would take half the room if it took, you remember spending many night in there with both your mom and Mylen, no doubt that young Siggy was a momma boy.

Only a single window looking on the forest, the training field being on the other side of the mansion, you rummage through the mountain of books but only find many romance tale, most of the 13 heroes with studies into magic strewn across the desk, there’s absolutely nothing that you could keep as a memento, the room is a complete mess of discarded books, letters, drawings and is that… food?

Damn she was THAT messy? You could always try to find something but it’s likely to take a while, the maid left this place as is and… for some reason it kind of make you glad.

It’s a little past midday when you rummage through most of the room, you had to call for some of the girls to help you sort things out, but you did made a fast discovery.

A wooden carving, rather crudely made of what looked like a young girl, mistake and cuts lingered in the silhouette, but… you made sure to pocket it.

As for a journal or anything of the like?

Absolutely nothing, the only notes of her you found were some old appointment dating last year even with the war raging strong.

The girls you called for help however, chatted with you quite a bit, all of it without real importance to your problem but knowing that you were missed amongst the people here was made all the clearer.

In the end, you resolved to go back to your room, slightly dejected but still happy about that little statue in your pocket.

Your room was spartan, you didn’t spend much time in it at all and beside your hidden mask, you don’t have anything of value in there beside some weapons, you strictly used this room for sleeping and…related…activities, but stepping here still give you a slight surge of nostalgia as you sit on the bed, the souvenirs clear as sky.

Inside your floor is a hole covered by a piece of wood in the exact color of the ground, it’s not the best place by any means but it is still something that can be considered a fair hiding spot, not like someone would infiltrate this manor to steal this mask anyway.

Gently prying open the lid, you spot a dust covered box that you slowly pry away from the ground, with this new treasure in your hands you walk to the bed, sit and open it.

Inside, staring back at you through empty hole is an old, old visage of silver, a perfect simulacrum of an average human face without anything special, lips, nose, eyes and the rest is simply silver, a perfectly average face that all but prove the incredible inhumanity of the person wearing it: those that stared saw an automaton worse than a golem, and from this thinking the Butcher grew during the purge.

Holding this thing spark many painful images that you make certain to chase, delving deep into that part of you isn’t something you want to do, you don’t feel ready either, this average, human face stare at you and now, you only feel disgust so you make certain to close the box, covering the silver mask from view.

Then you hear a small intake of breath, following the sound your eyes fall on a young girl with short brown hair, hiding beside the door, her stare is intense and incredibly curious, but she doesn’t move from the spot when you look at her.

You don’t have any recollection of a child in this manor…

The bravado put up by the small girl bring a smile to your face and you purposely linger, stretching the silence while her arm and pointed finger tremble from her visible embarrassment, her face is growing quite red.
"Now then, a lady of noble birth should always introduce herself first.’’

Her eyebrows shoot up and her mouth falls open briefly while she murmurs ‘’really?’’ but you lead the conversation, not leaving her any breathing room.

‘’Now let us try again, lady, I am Siegfried Shieffler and to whom do I have the privilege of speaking to?"

Saying with as much charisma as you can, you lean forward and look at her, making certain that your gaze goes straight in her eyes, the poor girl look down and mutter a feeble ‘’M-Mia…’’ before she find the fuel for her bravado, puff her chest, and point at you again.

‘’Mia Shieffer!’’

Oh? She’s got your family name now?

As you wonder, her small hand ball in a fist.

‘’Daughter to Maritha and Gismore! My mom said I was to be the new leader! But then here you are!’’

Seem like she gathered enough momentum to speak without being scared.

‘’Why are you abandoning your house then, mister Siegfried? Are you running from your responsibilities?’’

While you finish speaking, feeling like you don’t really need to explain yourself to a child, the girl repeat the word ‘’mother’’ in a more gentle tone instead of the haughty voice she kept using.

What’s this all of a sudden? Mia gaze is down, ashamed and unable to look up as she brood for a few more moments.

She’s frank, right now the noble exterior was just a façade, right now you’re staring at a young child afraid of the future responsibilities she’s been forced to carry.

You pause, looking at her with complete seriousness, the fact that she is a child doesn’t matter, you look at the individual in front of you, inexperienced, but honest enough to admit it, her silence is the answer you waited for, your voice and attitude may be overwhelming for the small girl, but you can’t afford to be anything less than honest.

You’ve never seen anyone with the expression this girl is having right now, she look both distant and incredibly focused as she look in your eyes without embarrassment, she has to become a proper heir forged by her own will above all, anything less wouldn’t befit a Shieffer. This girl future will hold many hardships indeed, but Mia Shieffer has been named your heir, her brown eyes fill up with some tears but she holds, steadfast, her little hands ball in fists.

Your house, yes indeed, your house, is no longer in your hands.

You put a hand on the box concealing your mask, finishing with this strong sentence and, finally, the girl speaks.
