File: 1349729134778.png-(90 KB, 300x300, Erik the Lich.png)
90 KB
You are Sir Daniel, an old hero long dead, or were, until Erik the Lich resurrected you to be his helper.

Fortunately, Erik is the laziest man you've ever known, and only wants to read erotica. But you're a good servant, and want to help your master by clearing the ladder to the top.

Last time you entered the mountains around the town on a venture to deal with creatures in them for a mining venture.

You found strange humanoids who devolved in the low light and began worshiping an ancient creature that got trapped in the mountains, in an underground lake.

You killed every living thing in there, then burnt their homes away.

You dragged the dead god out to the town to be used as a BBQ meal.

You got "drunk" and spilled all your problems out to anyone near, scaring children in the process.

After waking up with a hangover like no other, you returned to the manor, to begin training some young lads in the art of adventurers.

Rebecca gave you a talking to, you swear 11 year olds aren't allowed to be that smart, or sarcastic.

At the moment you're standing outside the manor in the courtyard, watching two 17 year old boys warm up for training.

What do you do?

You train with the two boys, your unnatural stamina and strength making them no match for you.

It's actually rather therapeutic, going over old drills and moves.

Before you know it they're sprawled out on the floor, wooden training swords next to them, panting.

What do you do?
>>
Give them a jolly pat on the back, telling them they did fine for their first day, and under our tutelage, they will soon become much better.

Then, go find Erik and figure out what needs doing. Maybe swing by and visit Stumbles and ask him how things are going, and if he needs anything.
>>
>>21044344
You tell them both good job, and how they'll soon see their improvements.

You leave them there on the lawn as you go to talk with Erik.

He's in the Library, as usual, pondering over books. Beric is sat in a wheel chair, scooting about the place. Seems Erik revived the rest of him.

"Hey Erik, anything need doing?"

>"Hmm? Oh, nothing at the moment. I'm investigating the blood you brought me. Seems I can do two things with God blood, the first is a miracle cure for disease, the second is a toxin the likes of which I've never seen. I could make either, or neither. Up to you, really."

Erik is still researching the effects and properties of God blood, and will be doing so for the rest of the day.

Stumbles is showing Rebecca how to make a dress, including the lacework.

>"Delicately now, child, thish part ish fragile, don't pull too hard or it'll break."

Stumbles is sewing the lacework into a wedding dress for a client. Rebecca is sitting near a table making the lace for the dress, learning how to craft fine fibers.

You knock and enter, and ask Stumbles if he needs anything doing.

>"Unlesh you can shew a veil, I'm afraid you can't help, shorry, Daniel. But cloth making ishn't your vocation."

Stumbles, it would seem, is busy filling orders and tutoring Rebecca.

What do you do?
>>
>>21044448
Let's get some of that meracle cure. We've not got all that much use for poison and stumbles can give us his anyway.
>>
Hmm... To town, to see if the wonderful people who reside there need a hero today. Also, to try and patch up our PR fiasco from the party.

Two other points: Which of the mages above Erik still need killing, and I think I'm the only person here...
>>
Go see if anything needs to be done in the town.
>>
>>21044494
You tell Erik you'll take that miracle cure, he says he'll get to it, eventually.

>>21044497
Eh, it usually takes a while to pick up speed.

You stroll out of the house, and past your apprentices, both still recuperating from earlier.

The town's people are sleeping in today, to get over all that food from last night.

You talk to the ones up and already drinking for breakfast. They understand what happened last night, as a few of them were soldiers and know what it's like to drink the pain away.

At the moment there's no jobs needed by townsfolk, but there is a bounty board outside the town hall, people in the surrounding area often put jobs up that require special skills.

There are 8 other magic users that need a case of dead.

Only two are on the same continent as you.

Salin, an illusionist, who lives to the south, after the fresh sea.

John, a battlemage who took his power from a warlock he killed in single combat. All that newfound power drove him mad, and he became crazed with bloodlust and a glorious death.

Neither have done much recently.

What do you do?
>>
It would probably be easier to take out Illusion guy first, what with there being a body of water near him, and us having Paladin powers from Hydra. Where are the frenemies at?
>>
>>21044448

Any more info about the toxin? Is it like a super antidote or something? Eric could drink it and be able to love ladies again!

Also is curing undeath and becoming a person a miracle curable thing?
>>
>>21044628
At the moment, Mark is getting orders from his Church.

Clarice is raiding Janus' library, or at least what you left.

Adrian is explaining to his father why he couldn't do anything.

>>21044634
Though it can cure almost anything, it can not cure natural events, like death.

No cure or poison will change that.

What do you do?
>>
>>21044628

I agree with killing the illusionist. If he finds out about mages being killed he's going to illusion everything up and be impossible to find!
>>
Do you wish to travel south and bump off Salin?
>>
>>21044687
Yes please. But only after leaving a list of training instructions for our new backup dancers.
>>
>>21044744
You return home and write up a list of required reading, exercises and training.

Then you tell Erik and Stumbles, and Rebecca by default, that you're going on another murder quest.

Erik thinks it's good that you're getting out and doing something, Stumbles wants you to come home safe, Rebecca scoffs at your blatant disregard for life. You promise to pick her up something nice.

How will you travel to the wetlands? By foot or boat?
>>
>>21044775
Boat. We can commune with hydra over the trip.
>>
>>21044775
By foot seems best, so long as we're sure we won't be stuck all prehistoria style in mud/tar.
As a dead man I'm sure we don't need no air.

We should stop by a boat type place and gather info about our quarry if at all possible though.
>>
>>21044775

Boat sounds fun! Also as an undead do we have a "life sense"? Can we detect the living?
>>
The docks seem to be the best place to head off to.

Your apprentices want to come with you, but you tell them they're no where near ready for what you're going out to do.

With your siege bow and bags on your back, you begin walking.

After a few days without incident you arrive at the south sea docks.

There's a hustle and bustle in the air that you only saw in Kerm.

The docks here are a massive trading port, everyone seems to come through here.

You ask around about Selin in the wetlands.

Not many people are willing to speak, the few that do say that he's got a palace of mirages that draw in the weak willed and weary to their graves.

>>21044817
You do not.

You are standing at the docks, looking for a boat going further south still.

What do you do?
>>
I think by boat would be best, so we can commune with hydra
>>
>>21044775

We should buy bags of flour!
>>
>>21044863
Is this port known for anything in particular? Something we can use be it for negotiation or combat?
Is there a shrine/church to our god here? We should visit and try to gather info from our like minded bretheren. With dancing of course.
>>
>>21044909
There is no flour, but there is grain that can be ground into flour, as it keeps better on the sea.

Would you like to buy a sack?

>>21044916
The port is known for its size, and diversity. At anyone time it boasts 10,000 people living in it or staying.

There are many arenas for combat, or gambling dens. There are trade houses and blood pits.

What do you do?
>>
>>21044863
Pay a visit to the Shrine of Hydra. Pray/dance a little bit.

Do illusions affect mirrors? you might want to buy a couple, just to be sure.
>>
>>21044943
Arenas, gambling, and blood pits you say?
If we cannot find other worshippers of our lord willing to share info maybe we can beat info out of a combatant or win info in a game of chance.

First the shrine to Hydra then TO THE GAMES!
>>
>>21044973
I meant info regarding the mirage wizard specifically.
If there were folks unwilling to speak that implies that there is info to be had we're just not getting at it properly.
>>
>>21044970
Low level illusions can be beaten with mirrors or reflective surfaces, but the high tier stuff seems almost real.

You visit the shrine to Hydra, it's much like the first one you visited. Warm, damp and with a thick layer of mildew in the air.

There's candles burning on an 8 headed hydra figure where an altar would usually be.

You have a quick prayer for guidance and other thing.

You head down to the entertainment districts. There are several gambling dens, blood pits, and an Arena.

Which do you enter?
>>
>>21044943

I'd like to buy grains and something to grind with.

Also the gambling sounds fun! Lets go there!
>>
>>21045033
To the blood pits!
>>
>>21045034
Just fyi, it'll take a full scale mill to make flour fine enough for Dust Bombs.
>>
>>21045033
Please define 'blood pits'.
>>
>>21045108
You decide a bit of ultra-violence is in order.

You enter the blood pits, they're exactly what it says on the tins.

Pits dug into the ground, 10 feet deep, with some obstacle in them. Two men go in, one leaves. Simple.

You can choose what division you'd like to be placed in.

Men-at-arms
Soldier
Adventurer
Hero

Each one is bristling with competitors, each waiting to find glory in battle, or death.

Hero. Go big or go home.
Also, look into buying a knife and having it super-polished, so it can reflect light and all. A mundane knife will do.
>>
>>21045220
We could just have our shield polished.
Perseus references manditory.
>>
>>21045165
can we have an inventory check before we fight?
>>
>>21045246
Thought of that, but wouldn't it take it's toll on the paint job? The sword is a no go, with it's gritty graveyard look.

Plus, a backup weapon(even if mundane) is a necessity for a warrior.
>>
>>21045182
You enter the Adventurer division. There's a 200 silver coin entering fee. You pay, and are sent through into the waiting room.

Your soon to be opponents are all sitting around on uncomfortable chairs, reading little magazines on fashion. If you look closely you can see one mentioning Stumbles.

>>21045214
You make a little coughing noise.
"Anyone know how to get to Salin?"

There's a few chuckles, some sighs of disbelief.

>"We don't go south to Salin, it's a death sentence. Sure, you're skilled, you're good, but out there, in the wetland, Salin turns your sense against you. You don't know where you are, what's real and what's not, and soon you've wandered into a bog, and you drown on pete."

"OK, so who's gonna take me there?"

More laughter.

>"Alright, if you kill Big Bubba over there, I'll take you."

The man in the green plate mail says, pointing at "Big Bubba".

Bubba is more elephant than man, clearly weighing over 600 pounds, all of it muscle. And that's a big warhammer... If it hit you, your bones would shatter to dust.

"Fine."

You and Big Bubba are called up to the pit.

What do you do?
>>
>>21045282
Our backup weapon is magic drowning and our bare, bony fists. And who cares about the paint job on our shield? Hell, I'm not sure it even has paint. This is the one we looted from a corpse back in whats-his-face's tower way back, right?
>>
>>21045276
You have on your person;
>Rope
>Tinder boxes
>Fuel
>Torches
>Cord
>Knives
>Your sword
>Your shield
> Medicine
>An assortment of little books
>Maps
>Paper

In the waiting room you left your siege bow on your chair, along with your arrows. Don't worry about theft, everyone there is honourable to a degree.

>>21045220
You have many knives, but they're dirty. A good polishing would do the trick.

"So, who's taking me to Salin?"

The knight in green, Gerald, he says his name is, nuts up and says he will.

You grab your prize, a cask of wine and Bubba's stake. Then you pick up your bow and leave with Gerald.

Gerald takes you to his ship. It's a small little vessel, with a crew of 20. But a deal's a deal, and he must oblige.

You give the wine to the crew, they thank you warmly. Then you set off south, to the wetlands.

Says on of the sailors.

But before others can answer you are already deep in the dance, the sounds of the ocean forming a great concert that follows your movements.

You finish by sliding through the crowd on your knees, to a wave of applause, cheers, and whistles.

While they're still in a receptive frame of mind you bring up the possibility of conversion to Hydra, and all the miracles he's performed for you.

Some of the more bedazzled ones agree, but the older, more stedfast in their faith, decline. But thank you for your dance.

Down below there's a gathering of men pledging allegiance to Hydra and his might.

Somewhere, down below, you feel your God's gaze, and his pride in you.

You are on the fast track to becoming Hydra's champion.

>"He's a demon!"

>>21045688
-Insert Eye of the Tiger here-

You pull ropes, swab decks, polish knives and tie nets.

You train some of them to use a sword properly, incase they need it.

At night, when it's just you on sentry, you commune with the sea. It sings to you in the night and gently lulls the boat.

If you ever became a pirate, you'd be the best.

Eventually you get around to reading that little book.

>"The memoirs of a man who traveled around the world, dancing."

The book is very easy to read, and full of little jokes and witticisms.

The climax of the book features the nameless protagonist challenging the devil himself for the soul of his love.

Through sheer skill and tenacity he beats the Devil, who is if anything, an honourable man when deals are concerned.

The protagonist wins a parcel of land as a favour from a king, and lives the rest of his life in peace, with his wife and children, each who dance like him.

>We're mainly transport, but sometimes we do a smuggling job for a bit of extra cash. As for the pits? I got bored, had an existential crisis, and though 'Hey! Why not?'. Glad I didn't go against you though, what exactly did you do to Bubba?"

Solidify the worship of Hydra among your faithful crewmen just in case.

Fine the gladiator we arrived with, see if he's interested in friendship, then depending on his answer describe your home to him and its location, insist he visit sometime.

(if Daniel has all his gear)

Cackle in a deep, disturbing voice. Lift the visor, tentacles prodding out of your eyesockets.

Then ask which way to Salin. Jump out, and swim the remaining distance.

(otherwise)

Reassure the men that the favor of Hydra keeps the seas from hurting us. Grab your gear, then wait till the boat reaches it's destination.

No. No freaking people out.

>>
>>21046306
You explain your new existence as a skeletal knight. Should of done this at the start...

Some understand, others pray harder. Their Gods don't do shit.

After a few minutes of you delivering a milk curdling stare they stop, and apologize.

They understand you and your "condition".

Gerald pipes up at this.
>"Knew it! You could never of lost in those pits, you damn cheat!"
He laughs deep and proper, the crew join in. Tension gone.

You tell them you're going out to deal with Salin now, and that you'll be back soon.

You gather your gear, and climb out into the little boat and lower it into the water.
>>21046359
You have no tentacles in your eye sockets.

The way to Salin is south, to where the patches of land pop up.

What do you do?
>>
>>21046403
at some point we need to acquire an octopus. we gonna freak this illusionist out
>>
>>21046359

A tiny octopus living inside our skull sounds adorable! Can we OP? We'll feed and swim it!
>>
>>21046403
Row south, if we go underwater we might get turned around, probably not due to Hydra's guidance, but still could happen. Once we get closer to land we can go swimming.
>>
>>21046403

You wave goodbye, for now, at the crew and crack oars.

Your magical strength propelling your little boat over the wave and onto silty ground.

You've arrived at the Wetlands.

All around is a heavy fog you didn't see from the boat, must be Salin.

You can't even see an outline of the sun.

>>21046448
Dead. Azrael's fire or the constant drownings killed them. There's a few left in the manor, rebuilding their hives though.

What do you do?
>>
>>21046480
either keep rowing, using the water as a guide, or jump in and walk the rest of the way
>>
>>21046480
I say we find out if this guy's illusions affect us. If not, walk right in like we own the place and tell him we're a better illusionist than him. As evidenced by the alarmingly realistic skeleton illusion.
>>
>>21046480
Get out of the boat and follow the waterways to Salin. Do not trust what we see or hear, trust only the flow of the water.
>>
>>21046480

Take off our shoes so we can "connect" with the water more and start walking. Faith shall show us the way!
>>
>>21046501
Your little boat has beached up on the silt, you can't really row through the sand and silt. It would be messy.

You start walking in whatever direction you want.

It goes on, and you realize it's not going to help.

The fog might not be real, but it's bloody convincing.

You see right through this pitiful illusion and it departs at your sudden perceptional skills.

Hydra was right, it wasn't meant for undead or magic senses.

You can see a fort in the distance, a shining beacon on the sand and silt.

You approach it and realize it's made of mirrors.

Sir Daniel does what is needed, not what is nice. Though he tries to do both.

The house itself is barren, nothing but rotten wood and food. There's broken windows and moss covered logs for the fire.

The book case consists of story books for children. Of magic castles and enchanted woods.

There is no basement, just the one floor of the log cabin, and the hole in the wall you made.

This house is a sad one, one where a scared old man hid from reality to avoid death for as long as possible, and in doing so brought his own.

All you can do is create a funeral pyre for the dead, and hope he finds his way on.

There's a little box full of trinkets that you take, Stumbles and Rebecca can have them, put them on dresses or cloths, it doesn't matter.

You burn the house, and the remains with it.

What do you do now?

This place is burning, returning to its base form. Hopefully something new will grow from the ashes.

You return to the boat and row back to the ship, watching the cabin burn from the waters until it's just a speck on the horizon.

The crew cheer and holler when they lift you on the deck.

One asks you what Salin was actually like.
"Just a man, who made a bad choice and paid dearly."

They don't really understand and instead celebrate the now safe waters of the Fresh Sea.

You ask Gerald if he'd like to visit the Manor house, he agrees to come with you for a while.

>>21047280
(Nah, I'm fine. I just don't feel that stories about professional murder should always end in song and glory. Some do, but not all.)

>>21047324
No, the books were there to remind him of his childhood, so he wouldn't have to face the twilight years and the coming end. He didn't care for anyone but himself. That's why there was a fog that trapped anyone who entered.

Salin was not a nice man. You ended his fear, and sent him on his way.

The journey home is quiet, you spend most of it below deck, reading and wanting to return to familiar comforts.

Your wish comes soon, and the knock on your door tells you you've landed.

You gather your things, and with Gerald, you leave for home.

>>21047364
I'm afraid morality is not as clear cut as that in this setting. Yes, he indirectly killed many, but he did it out of fear, having no knowledge of it. He was like an animal in the end, only wanting to go one day to the next, only thinking about himself.

You are also a pretty bad guy, murder is your job, but it's murder that's needed to bring goodness. You hope.
