“So how long was she there?” You ask Slider, who's apparently your 'minder' and acting on Nixon's orders.

She shrugs nonchalantly. “Oh...six, maybe seven hours?”

“Six or seven ho... what?! Why'd you... what?”

Slider grins lecherously. “She was tired, and said she was having nightmares. Who am I to deny our poor defector a good night's sleep?”

You sigh. “What if she'd have had a knife and felt like ventilating my torso?”

Slider's grin turns vicious. “I'd have snapped her pretty little neck like a fucking Popsicle stick, then brought your ass back from the dead for Merlin's sake.” She pauses. “Well, Merlin's sake and mine. Mine mostly. I don't need Ice tearing me a superfluous anal orifice. Again.”

“You think she would?”

Slider stops to think about it, forcing you to stop as well. “Mmm... Maybe. Fifty-fifty chance, I'd say. Well, no. Closer to sixty forty against. Maybe fifty-five forty-five against? She was pretty impressed you managed to score as many kills as she did yesterday.”

She starts walking again, her characteristic long-legged stride forcing you to trot to keep up.

“She's kinda cute, you know” She says, tilting her head enough to look at you out of the corner of her eye. “You could do worse.”

She grimaces. “Much worse. Like that blonde you were seeing. Good god, man, what the fuck were you thinking?”

“Hey! In my defense, I was probably very drunk!” You retort.

Slider snorts. “Yeah, for like, three months? You just have bad taste.”

“.... Yeah, you got me there.” You say, hanging your head.

“Dude, bitch was dumb. Had some nice tits though, I'll give her that.” Slider chuckles.

“She's also ancient history.” You point out. “I've been single since.. shit. Since before this cruise started.”

“This cruise, or last one?”

“Are we counting before we went to Topgun as a different one?”

“Ayep. We were on land”

“Then last one”

Slider laughs. “Well, I'm sure little miss Russian will be ecstatic to hear about that. She's been bothering everyone trying to learn about you, you know.”

A primal terror settles deep in your mind as you start to think about the implications of that statement.

“Slider, what did you tell her?” You ask, your voice dry and barely above a whisper.

“Oh, nothing but the most glowing praise!” you can hear her still laughing. “How you're soooo masculine and dreamy and gorgeous and how we all wish we had her luck and were the envy of the entire US Navy's witch force because we're in the same squadron as you and.... well, I'm sure you get the picture.”

“I... I don't know if you're joking, or if you really said that so you'd have something to amuse yourself with for the next week”

“Hmm.” She says, clearly not interested in giving you a straight answer. “Ok. So. Chow, then we need to go see Nixon. He's supposed to be in the hangar talking to your crew chief.”

[x] Yeah, I could go for some chow right the fuck now. Let's see what the fuck they're serving.

“I haven't had proper chow since we took off from the states. I'm hungry enough to eat whatever the fuck the mess hall is serving” You say. Your stomach, ever in tune with your mood, punctuates the sentence with a gurgling whine.

For her part, Slider just laughs.

You're actually able to identify most of the food, which is a change from the usual situation aboard, though the gray-brown lump of gravy soaked 'meat' still eludes you. You poke at it a few times with your fork.

Slider sighs. “Ya know, we're on a ship that cost a few hundred million some odd dollars. We fly multimillion dollar vehicles and you shoot missiles that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars a piece. You'd think the navy would spring for some decent chow, once in a while.”

1/2
>>
Your response is cut off by Katya as she sits down next to you. “Is better than anything we got served.” She makes a face. “Potatoes and beef. Or potatoes and cabbage.”

Slider grimaces. “They expect you to fly on that?”

Katya nods, scooting a bit closer to you. “Yes. It is not so bad, when you get used to it.” She smiles. “It got worse after our cook was killed in Afghanistan. Our replacement was a conscript from Moscow. Always complaining about lack of food in Vladivostok!”

“You were in Afghanistan?” Slider says around a mouthful of chow. Katya nods.

“From '86 until my squadron was withdrawn last year.” She grimaces. “Was based near Bagram. It was not a good place.”

You nod, sympathetically. Your folks were in south east Asia, and their stories weren't always told sober. Or repeated.

“There you are.” Ice says, walking over to stand behind Slider, who cranes her neck back and looks up at your commander. “I've been looking for you.”

[x] … Can I finish chow before I get in trouble?

Briefly, you consider pinning whatever it is Ice is after you about on Slider.

Then you think better of it considering Slider is sitting across from you, and is holding a pointy metal object- in this case, a fork.

You sigh, stuffing another bite of 'meat' in your mouth and chewing mechanically for a minute before answering.

“Can I at least finish chow before I get hauled off to get yelled at?” You ask.

Ice shakes her head. “For once, you're not in deep shit. Admiral Nixon just wanted to know where you were.”

“I... I'm not in trouble?” It's kind of a silly question, you know, since you haven't done anything to get in trouble, at least, not within the last 24 hours or so, but it's still an unexpected, and kind of nice feeling.

“Not right now, anyway.” Ice says, sitting next to Slider. “But there's two things we need to go over before you go talk to the admiral. Squadron stuff.”

“First” she says, when you don't answer. “Katya is your new wingmate till further notice. That means we don't have to farm you out anymore to conventional squadrons. I expect you to get her up to speed with our way of doing things.”

You can practically feel the Russian's joy.

“Second, we need to talk about Merlin.”

You about choke on your food- prompting a worried look from Katya as you cough.

[x] What about her?

“What about Merlin?” You ask, pushing aside your tray.

Ice hesitates for a minute- which, for her, is equivalent to a near panic. “Look, I know how attached you two are, but..” She pauses.

“You're damn right I'm attached. She's the best fucking RIO in the fleet. She saved our ass up there- you saw that shield, and we both know it sure as shit wasn't me that put it there.” You say, letting a little heat creep into your voice.

Ice shakes her head. “That shield is the problem, lieutenant. If she can form a shield what else can she do that we've not seen?”

You take a second to process the implication there. “You think she can drive a striker, is what you're saying.”

Ice shrugs, looking over at Slider, who's apparently found something very interesting to look at on the overhead. “I'm not sure, but Captain Blackwell is convinced that she needs to go back to Annapolis. But Nixon wants to talk to you before he backs it.”

“Good, because I'm going to suggest he shoot that the fuck down. Send her back to the academy? What the fuck.” You say.

Ice holds up a hand. “Before you do, talk to her. What if she wants to go back?”

“What if who wants to go back where?” Merlin says, setting down her tray on the other side of you from Katya.

“T... the academy? B-but why? Did.. did I do something wrong?” Merlin says, panic rising in her voice.

Ice smiles at her “No, hon. They think you can fly strikers.”

“T...They do?” Merlin says, panic replaced with excitement. “Really? Strikers?”

“Mhmm. After that shield yesterday they thi...”

Merlin cuts Ice off.

“That's why they want you go back.” Ice says, soothingly. “To teach you how to do it.”

“But they tried before! They said... They said I wasn't a witch! That I'd never be able to fly on my own!” Merlin says, her voice rising again.

“Did they say you'd never be able to use a shield either?” You ask, quietly.

“Well... yes, but” Merlin starts before Slider cuts her off.

“Tomcats don't carry focuses, kiddo. And unless you carry one to make fun of yourself, I'm going to say what you did up there was pretty impressive” She says, looking at Merlin.

“I... I'm not sure...” Merlin says, looking down at the table, then over at you. “I.. I want to see, but I'm happy here too, and I don't want to leave you guys.”

“You can always come back, yes?” Katya asks from your other side.

'In 1948, LeMay returned to the US to head the Strategic Air Command (SAC) at Offutt Air Force Base, replacing Gen George Kenney. When LeMay took over command of SAC, it consisted of little more than a few understaffed B-29 bombardment groups left over from World War II. Less than half of the available aircraft were operational, and the crews were undertrained. Base and aircraft security standards were minimal. Upon inspecting a SAC hangar full of US nuclear strategic bombers, LeMay found a single Air Force sentry on duty, armed only with a ham sandwich. After ordering a mock bombing exercise on Dayton, Ohio, LeMay was shocked to learn that most of the strategic bombers assigned to the mission missed their targets by one mile or more. "We didn't have one crew, not one crew, in the entire command who could do a professional job" noted LeMay.'

Add witches, and this sounds like a hilarious campaign.

[x] We don't want you to leave either, Merlin. We're a team.

You wrap one arm around Merlin’s shoulders and pull her in for a quick hug.

“We don't want you to leave, either. We're a team, Merlin.” You say. “But you need to do what makes you happy.”

“I...” She pauses.

“I don't think I want to go. I'm happy here. And I hated the academy anyway.”

You let out a breath you didn't know you were holding.

“Well, hon, if that's how you feel, then that's what we'll tell the admiral. But if you change your mind, let us know, ok?” Ice says.

Merlin nods. “I don't think I'll change my mind.” She says.

“Well!” Slider practically yells, slapping both her hands down on the table. “If all this touchy-feely nonsense is sorted, then, The good pilot and I have a date with a certain admiral.”

“That reminds me. He's up on the hangar deck” Ice says. “Last I heard, he was threatening to replace the engine in his plane himself if the crew didn't get to it right now.”

“When was that?” You ask, standing up.

1/2
>>
“About five minutes ago. He should still be up there.” Ice says. “Oh! That reminds me. Your crew chief was looking for you. He had a wrench.”

“Oh good.” You mutter.

On the way up, you notice you've gained one extra witch... and a pair of marines.

Slider shrugs when you nudge her. “Gotta keep minders with her, and you're already enough of a handful for me. Patty's not responsible enough, and Ice is busy. So we shanghaied some marines.”

“Yeah, guess that makes sense.” You say. “Oh, and I'm more than a little handful, just so you know.”

“Not from what Patty tells me.” She says, without missing a beat.

The hangar deck is actually fairly quiet- usually it's ringing with the sounds of crews working to maintain the wing's various aircraft. Right now, though, there's only two crews at work- one small one, on your bird, and one largely overstaffed one on Nixon's bent bird.

Nixon himself, In BDU bottoms and a green Tshirt, is helping the ground crew guide an engine out of it's mounts. Even from here, you can see the fragmented turbine blade.

[x] I don't think engine trouble quite covers that, sir.

You're honestly shocked at the extent of the damage- when he'd made his radio call, he made it sound routine. Boring, really. Now that they've got the engine out of it's mounts, it looks far more exciting than all that.

“That looks like more than a little engine trouble, sir!” You yell up.

Nixon looks down and grins. “Damned Pratt pieces of junk!” he yells back. “better than a quarter of 'cat accidents are because of these things!”

Climbing up onto his fighter's broad back, you get a real appreciation for the extent of the damage.

“Damn, sir. Looks like the blade totally failed. You eat a bird?” You say with a low, sliding whistle.

Nixon shakes his head. “Don't think so, son. Glad we decided to go ahead with the engine bay armoring!”

“Yeah, I'll say.” You say, looking around the engine.

“Anyway, son, I wanted to talk with ya.” Nixon says, leading you off the fighter. “What do you think about sending your RIO back to annapolis? You think the captain is onto something?”

“Can't say for sure, sir” You say, carefully. “But I talked to my RIO and she doesn't want to leave.”

Nixon smiles. “Good! You two are pretty big heroes already. Everybody wants to meet the team that rescued that girl and shot down a dozen migs in the process. And the president and the better part of the rest of the naval brass want to see you put your bird through it's paces.”

1/2
>>
He grins. “Of course, I'll do that, if you don't want to.”

“I think we can manage that, sir” you say with a laugh.

He chuckles. “I thought you'd say that. Now, listen son. There's about to be some changes for your squadron, and I wanted to let you know what was going on personally.”

“The reds haven't made any noise, yet.” he says, guiding you to the rear of the hangar, and looking out the open aft of the deck across the ocean. You can see a pair of ships- the USS Chicago and the USS Arleigh Burke- lead in her class- a few miles away. “But we suspect that'll change. I won't lie, son. We're probably in for a hell of a war. But that's not the problem, right now.”

He leans against the chains strung at mid waist level. “I'm going to have the defector assigned to your squadron if she wants to keep flying after we get back to the states.” He shakes his head. “It's unusual, but nothing dealing with those girls is ever usual. Plus, her name's pretty damn highly thought of, and it'd be hard to tell her no. Plus it seems like she's taken a liking to you.”

Slider laughs, quietly.

“Yes, sir” you say, diplomatically.

“Hell, son, right now, you're everything every other young American male wants to be. You fly the F-14 with witches, and now some pretty exotic young thing falls in love with you?” He laughs. “That's the kind of thing that happens in kid's fantasies. Hollywood movies, maybe.”

“Anyway, son, here's the deal. We're headed back to the states. Once we're there, the spooks from intel want to talk to miss Katya for a bit while our techs peel apart those strikers and see what they can do. In the mean time, You and your RIO are headed to Seattle to give Boeing input on your bird and help them out with some new toys they're cooking up on my orders.”

You both turn around at the sounds of yelling. Your crew chief- one senior chief petty officer Freddy Apollo- is busily yelling threats at Slider while Katya and the marines look on, bewildered.

“That’ll sort itself out, sir” you say, turning away.
Nixon grins. “My crew chief used to do the same thing. Beat me silly one day with a tennis ball in a gymsock because I brought his bird back all shot to hell.” He shakes his head, smiling. “But I didn't have a squadron of witches watching my back!”

He turns to look at you. “After that, son, You're headed back to Seattle. Also introduce katya to the rest of the squadron.
And then see how many marines we can fleece of their money in poker before we leave

...when Katya goes full-yandere and kills Merlin, you remember that it's all the casual flirtatious contact suggestions that will have caused it.

I think before that happens we'll have a chance to talk to Katya about Merlin and what she means to us, that is someone we care about deeply but aren't romantically interested in.

Also she was just as much a part of saving her pantless ass as we were. I think she'll understand that bit.

Maybe we should point out to him that we could've landed at the Japanese Airforce Base and let them get their grimy paws on the bird instead.

>>21063369
Okay, I personally am not interested in romantically pursuing Merlin. Not to mention the fact that she's 15, despite the fact that she is awesome I'm not feeling her as a good romantic fit for Fronk.

I'm interested in spending more time with Katya with romantic possibilities pending based on acquiring more information about her. Also, Russian accents are hot.
>>
>>21063495

I agree with this.

This too, but I think we should also watch out for romance possibilities with Ice.

If there wasn't a bond there, I wouldn't bother either. So far I see no other women better.

Or would you rather have another Minnarush happen with some girl with tits?

>>21063558
We're not as vocal due to the "consensus" being judgemental about it.

Funny part: All this crying foul hasn't occured in SWQ where Ian's romancing a 16 year old known for her lacking chest.
>>
>>21063621
To be fair, perrine initiated that one
>>
>>21063603
>Ice
>not Slider

No shit. I think I'd prefer marrying our plane over Slider. The whole mildly psycho vibe is rather off-putting.
>>
>>21063621
Because that's taking place in 1943, and Ian isn't 24.

That, and Perrine is at least over the (common) Age of Consent.
>>
>>21063636
Plus, it's 1940-something. People married young then.
>>
>>21063643
You just don't understand true love. She's an angel on the inside~
>>
Not to say it'd be a typical /tg/ quest paced relationship with sex in the closet before the quest ends, but rather something very slow and chaste.

Though I've heard some people say /tg/ just wants some girl with boobs to have sex in the closet with.

That and if Merlin was older (in both age and appearance), I'd still like her.
>>
>>21063643
I like psychos, they keep you on your feet.
>>
>>21063621
>All this crying foul hasn't occured in SWQ where Ian's romancing a 16 year old known for her lacking chest.

Because - as the saying goes - no one likes Perrine and, deep down, they want her to be happy as long as it isn't with MC Young. And I think she's 17 now.

I kind of like Ice so far but I'll be hanging onto the feeble hope at a lack of shipping wars.

[x] Hunt down Ice and see what the hell she thinks about all this!

With Freddy properly restrained- tied up with a fire hose- you decide now would be a good time to go find Ice. She's still your commander, though it seems like Nixon has sidelined her to go directly to you- weird, not unheard of, but weird.

It takes a while, but you find Ice, parked out on deck, on the starboard side of the island. The noise from the flight deck isn't so bad over here, and it affords a decent view out over the ocean.

“You know, when I was at the academy, I had an accident” Ice says, without turning around. You're not that loud, are you? Damn.

“I disobeyed orders, and tried to be a little hotshot pilot, like dad was. I ended up crashing. Got hurt pretty badly. I had a revelation in the hospital. We've been flying, as a species, for nearly a hundred years, now. Maybe the book knows more than I do” She sighs.

“And now, here I am, being awarded for following orders that are so opposed to what the book says to do that I might as well throw everything else out the damn window.”

She looks back over her shoulder at you and Katya. “And I've got you and her to fucking thank for it. I don't know if I should kiss you or strangle you.”

“Ya know” Slider says. “Some people would suggest doing both cos that's kinda hot.”

Ice glares at her, and Slider laughs.

Ice sighs again. “And to top that off, I've got the CINCPAC himself ordering one of my crews around personally, then telling me to follow-on with the rest of the squadron like it's an afterthought. We got pulled from topgun for this little mission of his, you know, and there's no going back for that.”

She turns around to look at you. “What kind of mess did you get us into, lieutenant?”

[] Woah, woah. This isn't my fault!
[] I don't know if I'd call it a mess, really.
[] Other. (write in)

Well depending on how you interpret that exchange in the first few posts she may be heading down that path.
>>
>>21063681
>You just don't understand true love. She's an angel on the inside~
The angel of death maybe. Don't get me wrong sounds like a great person for a friend and helper for defending younguns, just not really seeing romance anywhere.

>I like psychos, they keep you on your feet.

If the russians were better pilots I'd only have gotten 4 of them and they'd probably be giving me something that isn't a silver star and I wouldn't be an ace

[x] I don't know if I'd call it a mess, really.

“I don't know if I'd really call this a mess, ma'am.” You say.

“What is that, lieutenant?” She asks, sounding kind of pissed.

“Well, for one, we just won the navy cross. They don't just give those out. For two, we're both aces- confirmed aces. There's not a whole hell of a lot of point to going back to topgun now, since we'd just win everything there and embarrass the navy.” You respond. “Besides, with all due respect, ma'am, we don't expect you to juggle the entire work load here. You've got Slider and myself to hel... what's funny?”

“Warhound, I appreciate it, but you're a lunatic and Slider's a psychopath!” Ice says, laughing.

“Hey!” Slider says. “Loveable psychopath! Get it right!”

“And what makes you call me a lunatic anyway?” You say, choking back your own laughter. “I'm perfectly normal!”

The dead stares of Slider and Ice are too much, and you collapse, great gales of howling laughter escaping you.

“Pfft. normal, he says” Slider says, nudging you in the ribs with the toe of her boot. She looks at Katya. “You sure you're interested in this one? He ain't right in the head.”

You can't hear or see her response, but Slider laughs again. “If you say so sister. But he's still deranged.”

Katya's response is drowned out by the ship's siren.

Ice and Slider are moving before you're off the deck- though you're not too far behind.

That's a fucking scramble order if you've ever heard one.
