You stare hard, but can't recognize anything in the darkness in front of you. It goes on...seemingly forever. Turning around, you again see that endless darkness. A tunnel. You're in a tunnel. How did you get in this tunnel? You don't remember entering it. How can you see at all? There aren't any lights. Still, your immediate surroundings are dimly illuminated...

You take a step forward, and your sphere of vision follows. Huh. That's weird. The walls of your tunnel appear to be roughly hewn out of soft rock. You touch one with your hands. Cold. Drawing your hand away, you resume walking. With no way to tell the time, your journey seems endless. Nothing changes. Forever, just that shadow in front of you, rough rock wall to your sides. Time passes. It passes again. You grow bored, almost tempted to stop, but there'd be nothing to do. You'd still be bored.

Finally, you come to a fork in the tunnel. Again, everything is hewn from that same rock material, still cold to the touch. The peculiar dimness to which your eyes have adjusted lights the two tunnels equally. You're not sure which to take. They seem identical. Ow! That hurt. Punching the wall in frustration didn't help. The two tunnels are still identical, but now your hand hurts.

Maybe you should turn back, see what you missed. No, you need to go forward. Why? You don't know. You just do.

Staring at them doesn't change anything. All that changes...is inside you. The right tunnel. It draws you in. With no reason not to, you decide to follow it. Again, you find more of the sameness. Long, dark, cold. The tunnel goes on.

After some time, things change. The walls become less rough. The floor becomes more artificial. As you trace the new, smoother wall with your finger, you find it is no longer cold to the touch. Slowly, the darkness in front of you lifts, revealing you still have much further to go. Sigh. May as well.

More monotony. Then the tunnel changes once more, the walls becoming precisely machined. The floor has a pattern on it, various geometric shapes tessellating. The view grows brighter still, revealing a twist in the otherwise straight tunnel. You follow it once more.

In front of you is an impressive door. Though obviously not part of the tunnel, it almost blends in. Its dark gray surface seems to radiate warmth as your eyes trace its intricate decoration. Hexagons, heptagons, octagons, triangles, and squares are spread out along it. Two circles, mirror images of each other, are on either side of the door's center line.

No. You don't want to open this door. Something tells you not to. Something primeval, something deep within you. Don't open it.

Don't open the door. Don't touch it. Don't go near it. Don't don't don't don-

Your hand brushes the circle to the right. It's not warm. It's not cold. It just is, and it opens the door. As the door slides into the wall, it reveals a brightly-lit room. Two moving shapes catch your eye. They talk with each other, they interact with each other, they help each other. What are they? You can't tell. You can see them clearly. They are obscured, shapeless things. They simply are, and that is all you know.

Can you help me with this, one asks the other.

Of course, the other answers the one.

The one lifts something, handing it to the other. The other takes it, examines it. The other beckons the one to come look closely. Aha, the one says. The one now understands what was going on. The other smiles. Of course. Thank you, the one says. No problem, the other responds. The other is always here to help the one. They are friends. They are comrades.

The one turns around to check on something.

The other disappears.
>>
>>21074729

Intense sadness attacks your heart, suffocating you. What is going on? Why can't you breathe? You clutch your chest, as if you might remove forcibly whatever it is that ails you. You cannot, of course. It is an emotion, not an object. You know this. You try anyway.

No, you should not have opened this door. The one turns to look at you. You are not the other, the one realizes. Where has the other gone? Have you taken him away?

No, you have not. You don't know anything about the other. Who are you?

I am the one. I need the other. We were working together. Did you take the other? If you did, I will be angry.

No, I am sorry. I just came here. I don't know the other.

Who are you, then? You are not the other.

I am...me.

Well, me, you must have taken the other. I do not see him anymore, and he would not leave me. Not now. We are so close to figuring this out.

I did not take the other!

-M YOU TOOK HIM YOU TOOK HIM

The one assaults you with his rage, words and thoughts taking shape as they swirl about you, clogging you, suffocating you, engulfing you in a mass of anger, pain, and hate, tentacles trying to wring your neck-

"AAAAH!"

The swirl disappears. You are no longer blinded by bright light. The suffocating sadness, the fear, the rage, it all disappears. Other than the cold sweat in your bed, you are untouched, safe. You take several minutes to just lay there, cozy in your sheets. This isn't your rack. This is the bare couch in your office, by the pool. What time is it? You hope you haven't overslept...

"Hhmmmgg...." You let out an awkward groan, reaching for a clock. Oh. 7 AM. The rest of the facility is probably in high gear by now. Even the trainees would be eating breakfast now, getting ready for the rest of the day. This is unlike you. You're usually punctual.

What was that? You've never had such a vivid dream before, let alone one so...frightening. You shiver as a chill runs down your spine. That was certainly unlike you. Such raw emotion, applied directly to the core of your being, tentacles crushing your throat-

Tentacles? You know only one person with tentacles: Socks.

You eye your clock again. You have a morning check-in with Rae soon, and you'll have to touch base with Miranda again. Yetta's got the afternoon class, so you won't be pressed to stand in for Rae again. What to do?

Dreams have a tendency to slip the mind. It's like trying to grab water with your hands. The more you grip, the more it slips between your fingers. As you lay here on the couch, trying to remember, you're already forgetting details. What was the floor like? The door had some sort of pattern on it...

The need for a better place to store this information is evident. Quickly, you snatch a clipboard off a stack of papers on your desk. Quickly, you scribble down what you remember of the dream. Walking down a long, monotonous hallway. Finding a strange door, a striking sense of fear trying to drive you away from it. Unconsciously opening the door to find two shapes. They were friends, but one disappeared. Crushing sadness. Rage. Despair. Tentacles grasping your throat.

There. That should be about it. The major points seem to have been touched upon...

Knock knock.

"Who is it?" you ask.

"Seaman Rothrock," Odessa answers.

You're a mess. Hair frizzy, in a wrinkled work uniform (thank god you're on a civilian base), probably with bags under your eyes. Sigh.

Well, you've been in worse state before, you guess. You do your best to hastily clean up the office (amazing how messy a place can get in a few days), pat down your hair, and try to straighten out some wrinkles. All in all, wasted effort. You head to the door and open it.

"Good morning, Seaman Rothrock," you yawn. "Sorry, you'd have woken me up if you'd gotten here a minute sooner."

Odessa's clearly surprised by your appearance. "Oh, that's no problem, Co-Chief Kuykendall."

Damn. You wish you had some coffee. "What can I help you with?"

"I was just...um, about what we figured out last night..."

"Hmm?"

"What should I do today? I'm just going to be making a mess of things again, ruining the practice for the others..." She looks away, guilty.

...On one hand, she's supposed to be training now. The instructors are instructing right now. On the other hand, she's really a mess during the day, it seems. It might be more optimal to just train her at night. Wait. That would mean someone has to stay up and teach her...and that would probably end up being you. At the moment, the thought of long nights isn't very appealing. And your stomach is growling. And your clipboard is waiting for you. And Rae'll call soon.

What do you do?

You scratch your head. Telling a trainee to skip training with instructors who have prepared a curriculum so that she can train with someone less prepared is an iffy decision at best. You're not prepared to catch the potential flak from that decision, let alone devote your attention to the training of only one person.

"Well, just get what you can out of training today. We'll see what to do after that. You might have to do some training on your own."

"...Alright."

You smile. "Hey, cheer up! We've at least figured out how to get you working part of the time."

Odessa returns the smile. "You're right. I just have to work hard and deal with it."

"That's the spirit."

Odessa gives you a happy salute (Is that alright?) before leaving. You watch as she exits the pool room. Man, what did you do to deserve having to deal with eight recruits their Navies didn't want to have to deal with anymore?

Oh yeah. You blew up the Harbinger. Partially.

"Should've just let it be..." you complain.

You don't want to miss Rae's call, but your stomach is really bothering you. You decide to split the difference, grabbing some food and then heading to the phone bank. If you grab the right stuff, you ought to be able to eat by the phones. As for Socks...

[Socks, you there?] You reach out with your mind, trying to find him.

Nothing.

[Socks?]

No response. Strange. You can tell he's out there somewhere, but he's not responding.

"...Dammit, Socks." You don't have time for this. Socks will have to wait until afterward to talk with him.

You swing by the cafeteria, waving a friendly hello to Yetta and Miranda. With a little persuasion, dear old Tom serves you several muffins and a slice of buttered toast. That'll do.

"Anyway, what'd you find out, Rae?"

You hear her groan. "I just—nevermind. You were asking about their familiars, right?"

"Yeah."

"So, I found out a few of them. Mother's a bat, like Rothrock. The Grandmother's an owl. The next generation back was a fox, and beyond there we have a few kinds of dog..."

"Hold that thought, Rae."

"Hmph," she pouts.

Carefully, you pick up your ruined slice of toast. Luckily, it landed butter-side up. Careful...careful...there it is again! You fling your toast at the...thing...peeking around the corner. You just barely make contract, the slice of bread taking on a fierce spin. Whatever you hit falls back in surprise. A few tentacles are long enough to still be exposed. They make no movements.

"Alright, back. So...what kind of dogs?"

Oh, by the way, the academy here doesn't have any info on curses. As far as they know, other than what's up with the Rothrocks, there's no evidence curses exist."

"That it?"

"Yeah. Want me to check in later tonight?"

"Go ahead and try, but if I don't pick up the first call, I'll probably be busy. Feel free to stop."

"Well, alright then. Things going well on your end?" she asks curiously.

"Well enough, I suppose. A few problems with the trainees, but overall pretty good."

[No! I was not simply busy. I was trying to clear my mind of frightening imagery, now please, please, do not consume that object just yet!]

You smile. [Come on, Socks. Even if you try to hide things from me, I'll figure it out eventually. We're linked, remember.]

Feelings of shame pass through to you over the connection. [...I did not mean to convey that I wished to keep secrets from you, Cleona. I simply..there are issues that I occasionally would like to work through by myself, without burdening others.]

[Now, now, Socks. I'll be the judge of what is a burden. Here, let's do it.] You attempt to deepen the connection. Socks responds in kind. The feeling of duality begins to take hold, but you're more used to it now. You carefully eat the last delicious muffin, taking longer than usual to chew for Socks' benefit.

[Ahh, what an exquisite taste. Perhaps I should not be indulging in such activities. If I should ever be separated from you, Cleona, I fear I might go mad knowing I may never again taste such food.] Socks does his best to wipe the butter off the side of his face.

He was clearing frightening images by watching us? Oh my~

Socks really should clarify that point.

Let's ease into the dream gently.

And we're really turning Socks into some kind of taste /d/eviant.

[x] Mention the dream
It was a nightmare with martians in it. "Trying to clear my mind of frightening imagery" sounds like a martian nightmare. We're telepathically linked. I don't even know why I'm bothering to type stuff this obvious.

[So...why were you hiding, Socks? Trying to flush the scary images with images of me?] you tease.

[...No. I...I am not sure, to be completely honest. When I awoke this morning, I was badly shaken. Since then, I have been wandering these halls. For some reason, I felt I should check on your audio relay station...when the device began ringing. You appeared shortly afterward, and after I had ignored you, I did not wish to present myself for your inevitable questioning.] He gives a mental sigh. [I suppose that was for naught, now, however.]

You bring your hand to your chin, thinking. [Wait. You woke up badly shaken?]

[...Yes. Images through my mind that were most unpleasant, reminding me of time long past.]

[Oh? What images?]

[Cleona, I realize that the nature of our connection makes it difficult to withhold things from one another, but I would prefer to not discuss this.] His tone, though, makes it clear that he'll talk if you ask again.

[What a coincidence, I too was badly shaken when I woke up.]
And go into describing our dream.

Just confirm that the images we saw match his.
If he doesn't want to discuss them beyond that, that's fine.

[It's just that I had a disturbing dream too.]

This concerns us as well. Explain to him that we experienced something similar at roughly the same time and that we believe they may be related, but need more details to be sure.

[Well, it's just...I had a frightening dream as well.]

Socks doesn't say anything, letting you continue.

[I...I wrote it down on this clipboard, so I could remember...Let's see. I was in a rough tunnel. It was very dark, very long. I couldn't see any end to it.] You pause, waiting for a response. Nothing. [I walked forward, for a very long time. The tunnel was the same, never changing until I hit a fork. One tunnel went left, one went right.]

[Which tunnel did you take?] Socks asks.

[Right.]

Socks doesn't say anything.

[Eventually, the tunnel started changing. It wasn't so rough anymore. I noticed there were shapes carved into the walls and floor. I kept going and going, and it got lighter. Finally, I came to a turn. As I took it, I found a great door, all sorts of shapes carved into it, with two circles near the center.]

[...What did you do?]

[I wanted to turn around, run away, do anything but go inside, but I did it anyway. When I walked in, I saw two figures. They were blurry, and I couldn't make them out.]

[What were they doing?]

[I don't know, trying to figure something out. Yeah, that's what. They were working together on something. One of them turned around and the other disappeared. By this time I'd walked into the room, curious. Then the one left turned around, asking what happened to the other.]

Socks' expression becomes grim. [What did you say?]

[I said I don't know, he vanished. The one left didn't believe me, he though I took the other away. He...got angry. When the other disappeared, I felt swamped by a feeling of...sadness. When this one got angry, it was like I was drowning. In rage.]

[...And what did he do when he got angry?]

[He reached out with tentacles and...and tried to strangle me.]

A million emotions course through Socks all at once, threatening to overwhelm you. He shakes. After some seconds pass and he recomposes himself, he says one thing:

[...It was you.]
