You're currently in one of Jormungandr's cargo holds, which had been refurbished into a makeshift dining hall. Some kind of magical construct sat in the corner- Mostly abjuration magic, making up an arcane oven, heat building up within it. Next to it sat a tray of cookies, slowly cooling, and it smelled *delicious*.

"Just a second." Cassiel said, as you, Belle, and Kaliel look at him expectantly. The snakegirl grinned widely at him, her teeth awfully sharp- You see a bit of Quaz's grin in her, as you watch her snatch and munch on one of the cooling cookies.
"They're cool enough now." She said softly, closing her eyes contentedly.
>>
Eat a cookie, relax, and enjoy.

"How are you so amazing at making chocolate, Cassiel?"
>>
>>21081795
Grab a cookie.
"I should have got the Gearworks to make me cookies. I bet it could have done the best cookies ever."
>>
You lean back in your chair, relaxing, and you take a few cookies.
"How are you so amazing at making chocolate, Cassiel?"
"Transmutation magic!" He said. "For ... well, whatever reason, since I came back from the dead, transmutation magic has been easier, and everything I make tastes better."
"Because you were smoked and spiced, actually." Kaliel said.
"... What?"
"The orcs eat sea serpents." She added, and took a cookie. She gave him a grin.
"... Oh. Well then." Cassiel said, his beak clicking shut.

As you watch, you note that Belle's eating her cookies strangely- she bit it into strips, and swallowed each strip individually- most likely since her teeth weren't designed for chewing on things.
>>
>>21081866
He just would've stolen a batch of Cassiel's cookies.
>>
>>21081870
"So you're saying that being delicious makes it easier to make other things delicious? Is that like that empathic magic Sardriel uses?"
>>
"So you're saying that being delicious makes it easier to make other things delicious? Is that like that empathic magic Sardriel uses?"
"Yeah, kinda." Kaliel said. "It's not really part of wizardry, it's just one of those things that happen. He's also probably closer attuned to transmutation because I shapeshifted that jerky into his heart, when we brought him back."

There's a squeak as Belle feeds half a cookie to the daryeh sitting next to her. It squeaks, happily, and starts munching down, lightning tracing from scale to scale as you feel a small amount of wild evocation magic. Softly, the snakegirl started repeating something in draconian and patted it's head, and the lightning stopped.
>>
>>21082010
"What was that bit of lightning there on your daryeh, Belle?"
>>
"What was that bit of lightning there on your daryeh, Belle?" You ask, and she looks up at you.
"Malma isn't special. They all do that." She said, patting the creature's head again. "That's why we use them for war, when we don't have them dig."
"Malma?" Kaliel asked.
"Mala'mala." She said. "It means that she's scaley."
>>
>>21082077
"Well, she is. What does your name mean?"
>>
"Well, she is." You say.
"That's why I thought it would be a good name." She said, and pulled it into another hug.
"What does your name mean?"
"Sudden Joy." She said, quietly. "I think. Quoo named me."
>>
>>21082179
"That's sweet."
Less talking, more cookies in mouth.
>>
"That's sweet." You say, and eat another cookie. Belle, meticulously, started splitting the cookies on her plate into halves- putting half of each onto your plate, and the other half on Kaliel's.
"How is she doing?" She asked, slitted eyes peering into yours. "I miss her. Was she hurt? Is she taking care of herself?"
>>
>>21082340
"She's doing very well, I think. We fixed her heat vision and she's gotten the things needed to make wine for everyone."
>>
>>21082340
"She's doing better than she was when you last saw her, I would be. She can see heat again, and she's happily at work."
>>
>>21082340
"My friends managed to rescue her before anything too bad happened, she was a bit malnourished at the time though. She's been well taken care of in New Arcturus and is working on brewing various wines."
>>
>>21082340
"She's doing fine. She wasn't hurt and my cousin managed to cure her heat-vision."
>>
>>21082387
that should be "bet" not "be". Why am I throwing typos everywhere today?
>>
"She's doing very well, I think." You say. "We fixed her heat vision and she's gotten the things needed to make wine for everyone."
"That's good to hear." She said, and gave you a smile. "You fixed her heat vision? With magic?"
Kaliel nodded.
"... I want to learn magic." She said, suddenly, as her tail started coiling around the legs of the chair- it creaked, loudly, and you sense a strange tension that wasn't there before. "Can I?"
>>
>>21082455
"I don't see why not. It's very hard to learn, however, and not everyone has the knack for it."
>>
>>21082455
"Maybe, and New Arcturus is the best place to find out, 'cause we've got so many. I'm still learning wizardry a bit myself. And please be careful with the chair, Belle."
>>
>>21082455
We be using dat control magic to sense if she has any power. Don't want to get her hopes up.
If yes: "New Arcturus has a lot of wizards, I'm sure you'll be able to find somebody to teach you."
If no: "I don't know, I can't sense any power from you. You'll have to talk to somebody who knows more about it."
>>
"I don't see why not. It's very hard to learn, however, and not everyone has the knack for it." You say. "And New Arcturus is the best place to find out, because we've got so many. I'm still learning wizardry a bit myself. And please be careful with the chair, Belle." You say.

"Sorry." She said, her hood folding down as she hunched over, her tail letting go. Gently, you put your hand on her shoulder, and try to sense her magic, and you sense something strange, something hidden. Not quite a talent, and not quite magic power...

And she recoils, twisting away from under you. "Sorry." She said again, timidly.
>>
>>21082542
This. Check her potential first, then give her a basic 'Light' lesson if she's capable. if we could modify it to make Heat that would probably be really awesome for a cold-blooded spellcaster.
>>
>>21082584
"No, I apologize - I should've asked before touching you. It's something humans do often enough, but Quaz told me your people are uncomfortable with it.
I was trying to sense what sort of power you might have."
>>
>>21082584
"Sorry, I was just checking to see if you have any magical power. I'm not sure whether it's a talent or the ability needed for wizardry, but you do have something."
>>
>>21082584
"It's okay. No harm done, nothing's wrong."
>>
>>21082584
"No, sorry to you. I forgot you don't like being touched because I'm used to Quaz. I was just trying to sense if you had any magic power."
>>
>>21082584
"No, it was my fault, I should have checked with you first. Bad habit of mine.

I was trying to sense your magic, and you have something but it's different from what I've seen before. I'm not sure exactly what it will look like once developed."
>>
"No, I apologize. I forgot you don't like being touched, because I'm used to Quaz. I was just trying to sense if you had any magic power."
She looked up. "It's okay if you touch me. It's just... you're warm." She blinked, and then her hood somehow flattened even more. "And do I?"
"You have something, but it's different from what I've seen before."
"Oh." She said. "That might be because I-I'm broken."
>>
>>21082722
"Broken?"
>>
>>21082722
"Broken?"
>>
>>21082722
"How do you mean?"
>>
>>21082722
"What do you mean by that?

And it didn't feel broken, it felt different, something similar to two forms of magic, but it wasn't either of them."
>>
>>21082722
"All humans are warm, we make our own heat. Although from what Kal has told me, I believe that means we have to eat far more frequently, and in smaller portions.
She can tell you more about it than I can, if you're interested."
>>
"Broken?"
"I- I only have one mind." She said. "Everyone talks about their undermind that comes up when they're cold or-or hungry, but... but I don't feel it. I'm a-always like this."
>>
>>21082803
"You aren't broken, just different. Humans,Elves and Kalak are exactly the same as you. Being outside of the norm for your species doesn't make you broken."
>>
>>21082803
"Oh. That's fine, humans are all like that."
>>
>>21082803
"Everyone else here, including myself, only has one mind. It doesn't make you broken, it makes you different by the standards of your people, but not broken.

I don't think that's related to your magic, but I suppose it's possible. Your magic is unique, at least so far as I have seen, we can investigate it later."
>>
>>21082803
"Actually, most people in the world are like that. In fact, the Children are the only ones I know of who have two separate minds.
If you'd like, Kal could have a look at you. She could probably tell you more about why that is."
>>
"You aren't broken, just different." You say. "Humans, Elves, and Kalak are exactly the same as you. Being outside the norm for your species doesn't make you broken."
"B-but they called me broken!" She said, her jaw splitting into parts as she spoke. "They wanted me to become a handmaiden until- until I told them and then they said I was broken and then their daughters were mean all the time."
She closed her eyes, and sniffled, her tail straining against the chair again as she tightened her grip. "I'm *glad* the dwarves killed her."
>>
>>21082911
"The Handmaidens didn't much like anything that challenged their authority or their view of the way things should work. Trust me, you're not broken."
>>
>>21082911
Ask if we can hug her. Then tell her that she's not broken, she's special.
>>
>>21082911
Hugs time. "Just because they called you something doesn't make it true. You don't seem broken at all to me."
>>
"Can I hug you?" You ask, and she nods.
You lean over and give her a hug- she's freezing to the touch, but you hug her nonetheless, and she clings to you, almost sapping your heat.
"Just because they called you something doesn't make it true." You say. "You don't seem broken at all, to me."
"Most people in the world are like that." Kaliel added. "We all only have one mind."
"Really?" She asked. Kaliel nodded. "That... that helps." She said.
>>

>>21083108
Give her some more heat, warm up a bit, not enough to be uncomfortable, but some.

"There's someone at home who knows much more about minds than I do, we can ask Sardriel when we get there why and how.

You'll like it in New Arcturus, everyone is really kind and friendly."
>>
Rolled 96

>>21083108
"Good. Would you like something to warm you up?"
If yes, make another heat crystal.
>>
>>21083194
lets not.
>>
>>21083194
Seconding this.
>>
>>21083249
Why not? It's stupid not to.
>>
Kaliel closed her eyes, and gently put her hand on Belle's forehead.
<... there's nothing here.> Kaliel said, her voice panicked. <I can't sense anything.>"There's someone at home who knows much more about minds than I do. We can ask Sardriel when we get there."
"Really? Okay, I'll talk to her." She said, closing her eyes.
"Would you like something to warm you up?"
"It makes me less tired, yeah." She said. "If it isn't too much trouble."
With your arms blazing with magic, you pour evocation into a small crystal, made to heat her up. She took ahold of it, and then gave you a smile, her hood flaring out for the first time you'd seen.
"I'm not as good as Sardriel is," Kaliel said. "But may I take a look at your mind?"
"Well... um... Okay." She said.

Kaliel closed her eyes, and gently put her hand on Belle's forehead.
<... there's nothing here.> Kaliel said, her voice panicked. <I can't sense anything. Not even the mind she has, or whatever. There's... nothing. Like she's an empty construct.>
>>
>>21083277
>Whoops, the first line and the first half of the second line were copied over. Just, uh, skip those.
>>
>>21082911
"It's also important that you understand that death is a serious issue. You shouldnt wish it upon anyone or be glad about someone's death unless you truly mean it, or else you may become a monster."
>>
>>21083277
<Nonsense. If there was nothing there, she wouldn't be here, before us, and capable of thought. Her mind must be hidden, or paradoxical. But it is there, in some form.>
>>
>>21083277
<Don't panic, she obviously must have one. Look for evidence of its effects elsewhere in her body.>
>>
>>21083277
<That is exceptionally odd. She must have a mind of some form, but not one we can see.

Try looking in places other than her skull or don't look for her mind but instead look for the paths of various inputs and outputs that minds usually produce.>
>>
>>21083306
Let's not say this. We can give her a full rundown of the law at a later time.
>>
<Don't panic, she obviously must have one. If there was nothing there, she wouldn't be here, before us, and capable of thought. Her mind must be hidden, or paradoxical. But it is there, in some form.>
<I can't sense anything there. There's nothing here, nothing at all. The signals that signal her heart, and her limbs, aren't even there. Her limbs are just moving on their own, without signals.> she said, and then took her hand away.
"Well?" Belle asked.
"... I'm not good enough to tell." Kaliel said. "Maybe Sardriel will be able to tell you more."
"Okay." She said, and her hood folded back up. She suddenly gave Kaliel a hug, and then slid back into her seat.
>>
>>21083372
<If she truly doesn't have a mind. What does that mean? How can such a thing happen?>
>>
Contact Velk'lea on the ring, ask if there was anything out of the ordinary about Belle's birth.
>>
>>21083372
"So, Belle, it seems you made good friends with Grayson. He's the nicest bear you'll ever meet. If you're ever in danger you can run to him and he'll maul the problem."
>>
<If she truly doesn't have a mind, what does that mean? How can such a thing happen?>
<I don't know. An illusion, maybe?>

"So, Belle, it seems you've made good friends with Grayson. He's the nicest bear you'll ever meet. If you're ever in danger, you can run to him and he'll maul the problem."
"I know." She said. "She feels ... safe, to me."

You look down to your ring for a moment, and contact Velk'lea.
<Was there anything out of the ordinary, about Belle's birth?>
<No, not at all.> She responded. <When Quoo laid the egg, that was a surprise, but I made sure she didn't bump into anything until she hatched. Why do you ask?>
>>
>>21083472
<She's Quaz's daughter?

She's a very unique person, in a multitude of ways, from her latent magic to her mind, and I was hoping there to be something to learn about that from her birth.>
>>
>>21083472
<Well, when she claimed she didn't have an undermind, we offered to check out her head. We can't find any evidence of any mind at all. We're not sure what that means yet, and we haven't told her about it either.
But we've also discovered she has some sort of potential talent for magic.>
>>
>>21083472
<Just seeing if we could work out why she says she's 'broken'.>
>>
<She's Quaz's daughter?>
<She's my daughter.> Velk'lea responded. <But yes, Quaz is her mother. We don't know who Quaz's partner was, though. Why do you ask?>
<Because she's a very unique person, in a multitude of ways, from her latent magic to her mind, and I was hoping there to be something to learn about that from her birth.>
<I'm sorry that I can't help, then.> Velk'lea responded. <There's nothing that comes to mind- except for the issue where Tuel'va wanted her to become a handmaiden, for whatever reason.>
>>
>>21083540
<Did she change after that? Could the handmaidens have done something to her?>
>>
Guess we'll just ask Quazie about her, then. Can't we call her ring now? Does she have one?
>>
>>21083540
<She mentioned that. Thank you.>
>>
<Did she change after that? Could the handmaidens have done something to her?>
<No, not at all. She was always worried about her undermind before that, and she, well, told Tuel'va about it. It took everything I had to keep her from becoming a whelp, but she was still taunted and teased by the other young ones.>
<She mentioned that.> You say. <Thank you.>
<You're welcome.>

"Don't worry." Kaliel was saying. "Ishelda does this sort of stuff all the time."
".. Okay." Belle responded. Next, you call Quaz.

<Ishelda! Did you talk to my sisters? You gave Velk'lea a ring! Thank you!> She cried immediately, and you can almost hear her wide, manytoothed grin.
>>
>>21083596
<Yes, and we're bringing some one to see you, though we're not quite done here yet.>

Soem oen else can ask about Belle
>>
>>21083596
<Hi Quaz! Yes, I gave Velk'lea your letter and a ring, and I met your sisters. And we're bringing Bell'lea back with us. I was just wondering if you knew anything about her undermind.>
>>
<Hi Quaz!> You say. <Yes, I gave Velk'lea your letter and a ring, and I met your sisters. we're bringing Bell'lea back with us. I was just wondering if you knew anything about her undermind.>
<... But she doesn't have one.> Quaz said. <She never did. She confused everyone else when she started talking early. I knew, though.>
>>

Didn't quaz say she herself was broken? Maybe its related.
>>
>>21083689
<Yes, exactly. Do you know why she doesn't have one?>
>>
Quaz's partner doesn't exist, alternatively Male!Dras'lea x Quazilith
>>
>>21083690
These rolls man...
>>
>>21083689
<That's... what we're wondering about, really.>
>>
>>21083689
Do you know who the father/other parent was?
>>
>>21083698
>Male!Dras'lea
But... to breed with a snake person she'd have to be a snake person, and they only have one gender anyway.
>>
>>21083698
Didn't Exa say all of the Not!Naga are hermaphrodites? What if Quaz got HERSELF pregnant, somehow?
>>
>>21083719
Magic.
>>21083721
Possible, considering it's Quaz also probable.
>>
>>21083721
I think that's what he meant by "Quaz's partner doesn't exist". How else do you get pregnant without a partner?
>>
<That's... what we're wondering about, really. Do you know why she doesn't have one?>
<No, I don't.> She said. <But she has something taking care of the stuff her hungry mind would do, if she had one.>
<Do you know who the father was?> You ask.
<The what?>
<Other parent?>
<Oh, yeah! Tuel'va met me late at night, one time, when it was really, really warm. Maybe it was her.>
>>
>>21083742
Magic.
>>
>>21083744
So Tuel'va wanted her daughter to be a handmaiden, but abandoned her once she found out she only had one mind?
>>
>>21083744
<Oh, is that why she wanted Belle to become a handmaiden?>

But that's odd. Try to get rid of Quaz since she was a child because she's retarded and a lesser person who can't see heat etc. and then... have a kid with her?
>>
>>21083744
<Hmmm, most intriguing. She's not broken, she's just different. I think she might be something beyond a normal Naga.>
>>
>>21083744
"You don't know for sure? Quaz you are an odd one."

We reallly should have brought back a working snake for sardriel to look at as well.
>>
>>21083778
>a working snake
Haha, that's a bit mean. But Quaz is probably good enough, she has the two minds even if they are stupid.
>>
<You don't know for sure? Quaz, you are an odd one.>
<A lot of people say that.> She said.
<Anyway, is that why she wanted Belle to become a handmaiden?>
<No, only people that feel strange can become handmaidens.> Quaz said. <But nobody notices that, for some reason, except the handmaidens themselves. Belle is like that, and like I am. Wyrmy likes to get really upset at people who feel like that, like the elves, but he ignored us and the handmaidens, for some reason.>
>>
>>21083811
<People with magic? Velk'lea said the handmaidens used magic.
Umm... has Velk'lea not told you what happened?>
>>
>>21083811
"Quaz you may want to sit down.

The Great Wyrm is dead. It was also a demon."

>>
>>21083876
<Y-yeah. Let's go with that for now. Ask Velk'lea for details later.>

"Sorry about that. I had some questions for a friend."

Let's move this story along we're going to need to have Sardriel take a look at her.

I really don't want to be the one to break the news about the demon/dragon thing to her.

I suggest we let her continue in ignorance, considering her regard for it.

Hey Exa, would it have been possible to downgear the gearworks?
>>
>>21084103
>Not particularly. It would be much easier to create a brand new, incredibly simplified, useless version of the Gearworks.

"That is an excellent question." You say. "Magic, I think."
"Is that what you sensed when you touched me?" She asked, and then shrugged.

"There!" Kaliel said, coming away from the paper she'd started scribbling on while you were on the ring. "If I use this spell on you, you should be able to eat the cookies like we do."
She gave Kaliel a smile, and her hood flared out a bit- it seemed she was warming up, both literally and metaphorically.
"Can you do it then?" She asked, and Kaliel nodded, putting the palm of her hand onto Belle's forehead. Her jaw shifted, slightly, and the pointed teeth in her mouth dulled, the ones on the sides of her jaws almost going entirely flat.
"There." Kaliel said. "Remember, you chop with your front teeth, and then you mush with the sides.
"My tongue is weird." Belle said. "I can't smell anything."
>>
>>21084102
And where the fuck does it say that?

Also from the IRC

><Exabyte> Hah, Quaz was going to leap to that conclusion no matter what was said, provided she wasn't told that wyrmy was dead. Mostly because she'd been hoping the entire time.

You explicitly stated that you healed him. If she was going to jump to that conclusion anyway, even less reason to outright lie to her! Not that you can actually have a negative number of reasons.

"You lose your smell, but gain something amazing." You say, and hand her a cookie.
"Wait, you have a nose, but you can't smell?" Kaliel asked.
"I use my nose to breathe." She said, and then took a bite. Carefully, she started chomping at it, nibbling it away piece by piece. "Mhghmm hmhm ghm." She continued, still nibbling at the cookie, as her hood flared out completely, and the tip of her tail started twitching happily.

"A lot better!" Belle said, and grinned. Her teeth were humanlike, now, but for some reason there was still something 'off' about her grin. "It tastes a lot more, now! "Do you mind if I examine your, well, mind?" You ask.
"Go ahead." She said, and took another cookie, carefully chewing. You put your hand on her, and then you close your eyes, and reach out with your magic...

To sense nothing. Nothing at all. Complete emptiness, with some invisible, insensate source moving her arms, tail, and jaw, as she nibbles on the second cookie.

Magic drains from you, and drains from you quickly. combined with the exhaustion from earlier, fighting Tyr, the world starts spinning, and your legs would be trembling if you had been standing up. Kaliel takes your hand, evidently feeling your sudden exhaustion.

"Can I have another?" She asked Cassiel. The kalak chuckled, and pulled out new, warm cookies for her. She watched them, almost like a predator, waiting for them to cool.
>>

You take a tray of cookies.. and then you pull out some tea from your inventory, and start it brewing. Then you take Kaliel's hand, and make your way out of the cargo hold.

Before you go to your quarters though, you're rather curious... so you make your way abovedeck, looking up at the stars. It's hard to see what's different, at first...

"That's new." Kaliel said, pointing up. You see almost two dozen stars, arranged in a rough circle...
In a gear, you see. They're shaped like a gear.

You look up to the sky again, and one of the stars seem to flicker.
"Thanks, Gearworks." You say.
Taking Kaliel's hand again, and a sip of tea, you make your way back down to your quarters.

You wake up with Kaliel laying next to you, snoring loudly, her hair wild and everywhere as she snores. You look out of the ship's window, and it looks like it's morning... and it feels like you aren't moving, anymore. Perhaps you had arrived, already.

You pull open the door- and see Belle, snoring there, her tail curled up underneath her, as she was stretched languidly back, her spine twisted unnaturally, and her tongue hanging out of her lips, spilled out onto the floor.

You look around, but you can't see anyway past her sprawled out tail without waking her, unless you run and try to jump over.

"It's okay, we'll find her." You say, and take her hand- her hand is just as warm as yours, you notice. "Where was she when you last saw her?"
"The room with the food, and the cookies." She said... and then she slapped her other palm against her forehead. "I know where she is, now."

The two of you make your way into the cargo room, and you see one of the barrels shaking. She pulled it open, and pulled out malma, which was crunching on the vinefruit inside, covered in juices.
"Malma..." She sighed, and started talking in draconian. The daryeh started to look shamed.

"... This is the only one she got into, I think." She said, and cracked it in half, giving half of it to the critter. It continued crunching at it. "One of my sisters take care of daryeh." She said, quietly. "Malma was a runt, so she was going to be food. But I claimed her instead."

She gave the sticky scaled creature a hug.
"She'll grow up eventually." Belle said.

"You changed my teeth and stomach, right?"
"Yeah, I did."
"Can I eat this?" She asked, holding up the vinefruit.
"Yep. You can even digest it, so you won't get sick."

The Knight has some honor and protecting the weak stuff, but apart from that nobody's really anywhere near our turf. There's a huge gap in the god market just waiting for The Queen to step up. Plus they're all guys. If we gain some motherly traits etc we could carve out half the population and become the most powerful one there (depending on how gods work). A position where we can enact some real change to make the universe a better place. I know we've always said we're going to become immortal but I think dying could be a good move.
