So XCOM: Enemy Unknown has been on the shelves a few days now. What've been your best moments thus far, /tg/?
(Original XCOM stories are fine too)
>>
Lost a dude who I had from the beginning of the game because the game bugged and I misclicked, leaving him stranded in the middle of the road instead of safe in an elevated position.

Then the Thin Men came.
>>
>>21100040

>Then the Thin Men came

Those things gave me no end of grief all the way into early midgame. Having them turn up now, when we've got flying armour and plasma weapons, and stomping all over their stupid little scrunched-up poison-spitting faces is so rewarding.

Let me tell you some stories about my team, I'll start us off with the story so far of my main squad, led by the inhumanly skilled Col. Alice 'Garrote' Hunter.
Referred to now by many as 'The Huntress', she has over 120 confirmed kills, survived 42 missions, and where many squaddies will be happy to get one or two kills a mission, this madwoman will chalk up 1-2 /per turn/.
>>
>>21100088

Where the other rookies came and went, she climbed the rungs of the XCOM hierarchy faster than anyone else. In her very first engagement she took on three sectoids and kicked them seven ways to tuesday with the most basic of equipment, out of reach of her squad, back when the old squad leader / medic, 'Scotch' was still around. This was maybe two months into the alien incursion.

Then Cpt. Scotch took a light plasma rifle burst to the face whilst getting another squaddie back on his feet again, several missions later, after Alice had earned her Sniper commission, and since then Alice Hunter has been squad leader. Whilst skilled, her superiority on the battlefield wouldn't show itself until almost a month later, when the aliens terrorised Beijing.
>>
Well, on the last mission I shot the Uber ethereal thinking it was a normal one and unexpectedly ended the game (there was a normal ethereal next to him mind controlling one of my dudes and miss clicked on the Uber and I thought you had to kill everything. Gotta love snipers. Also I kill him with the only purely human plasma weapon in the game(the plasma sniper) So, Humanity, Fuck Yeah.
>>
>>21100185

XCOM had seen Chrysallids before, during the first terror mission in Germany. Out of the eighteen civilians XCOM was sent to rescue, only three survived, and the XCOM squad was cut down from five to two men. Scotch had led that mission before he was killed, and many wondered if it had taken the fight out of him, having to order his squad to shoot a man who, moments before, was an ally, and who was now a mindless zombie. Three times he made the same order until it was just him and the new guy, 'Buster' Suzuki left.

So Alice Hunter came out of the Skyranger knowing full well the horror she was about to step into. Her squad, including Sgt. Suzuki (who is still serving, now as Colenel), took position on the south side of a library in the middle of downtown Beijing.
>>
I had a pair of assaults. They both went into my first round of psy ops testing at the same time and both came out proficient. They made a one two killing team. Run an gunning around, quadruple tapping things with scatter lasers. I could send those two into a building and they would clear everything. No questions asked.

They were hunkered down out of LOS of one of those sceptiod mechs. It nuked all 45 hp off both of them in one glorious salvo. My medic revived them.

At the end of the mission the ethereal killed one for good. Mustang hasn't had a successful mind control since... They killed his kharmic mind bullet buddy.
>>
My friend has been keeping me updated on a joke game he's playing. His entire squad is mechanized.
He has just realized that none of them can open doors.
>>
>>21100329
I know have the mental image of 6 shivs just floating around a window. Longingly looking in at the two or three thin mints in cover they just cant seem to shoot. The thin mints just have the door on overwatch.
>>
>>21100300

The squad moved into positions behind a few parked cars outside the main entrance, fingers tightening on their triggers. The two assault guys and the new girl (pressed into the role of Medic with Cpt Scotch's death), Rookie Molly Wood, all had the newfangled laser rifles, but Alice had her trusty bolt-action sniper she'd had since she joined the outfit.

The atmosphere was deceptively quiet for awhile, screams and shot could be heard only in the distance, and it was if this place was an oasis of calm - but only for a moment.

Before long a woman came charging out of the main entrance, screaming and panicking. The squad barely had time to react before no less than eight Chrysallids came swarming out after her. The squad opened fire, killing three of them, but by then all hell had broken loose.
Floaters swarmed around the sides in a flanking action as five more chrysallids tore through the library, killing everything they could see.

Alice kept her cool, loading bolts into the chamber and loosing them into the bugs' heads. Before long, the chrysallids had almost reached her. Where lesser men would be expected to crack, Alice killed every single one of them. Headshots, reaction fire, picking off the one or two that got too close and ended up suppressed by the heavy. She chalked up no less than ten Chrysallid kills in that one mission, as well as four floaters.
>>
>>21100434

Since then, Chrysallids seem to have been her favoured enemy. Whilst she has been known to almost single-handedly wipe out entire enemy platoons, she seems to hold a special hatred in her heart for Chrysallids. The squad medic, now Colonel, Molly 'Stacks' Wood, would have died long ago had it not been for Alice's intervention, killing four bugs charging at Wood as she panicked and shot wildly.

(I'd like to think) The two have shared a bond ever since, Wood looking up to Col. Hunter, even though Wood has racked up a number of achievements of her own, including protecting the squad's entire left flank on her own from two squads of Thin Men whilst the others moved to reinforce the collapsing right flank.
>>
>>21100519

Wasn't long after that Corporal Hassan Aziz was transferred to XCOM, being a sniper himself he found himself under Alice's wing, supporting the rest of the squad time and time again. However he always stayed in Alice's shadow, and whilst he climbed the ranks diligently, he could never pull off the extraordinary shots or mind-blowing killstreaks that Alice did on a regular basis. That was until Alice took a plasma blast to the gut.
Col. Hunter's armour took most of the blast, but she still suffered some nasty burns and had to spend nearly a fortnight in the infirmary. Hassan 'Nightmare' Aziz by this point was the second-highest ranking squad member, and armed with plasma weapons and heavy armour, he led the squad to two of its' greatest accomplishments in less than a week.
>>
>>21100621

>>21100621

Given command of the squad, Maj. Aziz truly stepped out of Alice Hunter's shadow.

The first was a defusal mission in Canada. Alien infiltrators were in the process of deploying a bomb that would wipe out all of Montreal, and he led the squad to engage. This was the same mission where Molly Wood would defend the left flank of the squad from two groups of thin men.
As 'Wolverine' the squad Assault member, panicked and choked on the Thin Men's poisonous spray, Hassan grappled his way onto a mausoleum roof. The two heavies of the squad were pinned down behind him, unable to get a good shot at the aliens attacking Wolverine, far on the right flank.
After giving Wolverine some breathing room, Hassan ordered the squad to take cover in an ornate stone plaza near the bomb, whilst keeping watch on the mausoleum.

As the bomb was defused the Thin Men renewed their attack. Merely seconds later, they were all dead, from a frankly stunning display from Hassan and his sniper rifle.

A few days later a scoutship was downed in Mexico, carrying two Sectoid commanders and their honour guard. During that mission Hassan led his squad to a flawless victory, capturing both a Muton Elite and a Sectoid Commander in a single operation, and securing his place as the squad's second-in-command, should anything happen to Alice.
>>
>>21100010
ive overplayed the game already

its just mindlessly clicking into cover and mindlessly clicking attack now

game occasionally locks up after moving/attacking

found some fun tactics. one scout, enemies often go near walls, throw grenades near the wall from outside

the earlier enemies are actually harder than the later ones because they dont rush you. when they rush you, all the added class skills for additional overwatch things make it too easy

havent closed the game in days except when it locks up i restart it
>>
>>21100736

Alice Hunter, Hassan Aziz, Molly Wood and 'Buster' Suzuki (the two other squad members aren't regular, being swapped out regularly) are currently the world's first, last, and only line of defence against the Alien threat. They are, however, the four most dangerous people on the planet. The Aliens aren't yet beat, but with the smackdown Col. Hunter and her crew are laying on them, I don't see the aliens putting up much more of a fight.

I lost my team's sniper. Oh god, I'm a terrible commander for letting this happen! He survived 37 missions, he was part of the initial shipment of rookies the game gives you and the only member of the initial squad to survive this long besides the heavy you get from the tutorial (now a major, you beautiful Argentinian bastard). I was doing the base raid mission which I thought I could get by with ignoring like in the old games. By waiting until my men had powered armor and full plasma equipment the aliens ramped up their shit as well. After clearing most of the base with no problem I got to the part where they're pasting captives (what?) and a fucking sectopod sideline's my team. My pair of assaults turn it into cheese with their alloy guns, but not fast enough. I had my sniper try and cross to the upper deck of the base using one of the ramps (jetpack ran out of fuel) when BAM! Sectopod shoots him with its super laser thing and suddenly HOURS of training and dozens of missions of faithful service put to an end in an instant. The alien's Nightmare (the nickname the game gave him) had finally come to an end.

That brilliant fucker! Oh what a terrible commander I am for letting him die. The beautiful brit and his silly yet chiseled hairdo stayed with the XCOM project even after the UK pulled funding and withdrew from the council.

Maybe I'll make a nice statue for him in the center of the zoo I'm going to make with all of these fucking alien captives I have.
>>
DJ and Grit, the Mahmoud brothers, are two of the deadliest motherfuckers on the face of this beautiful planet. If they manage to make it past the laughably lethal Alloy Cannon of the former, they'll probably get shot in the face by the Sniper Laser of the latter. I haven't even bothered to research the plasma upgrade for Grit yet because he's just doing so damn good I have to help everyone else step it up.

Also I hope they fix the SHIV bugs. I want robots, Firaxis. With guns. Not weaponless buggies or just empty god damn air.
>>
While on the subject of secret organizations and whatnot: what game could run a campaign similar to this? Preferably a good game at that.
>>
>>21100916

I've always wanted to run an XCOM-like game. Dark Heresy can be very easily houseruled to fit and XCOM-like mission structure.
>>
>>21100942
That's a good example. What about Hunter? Never played it myself so I wouldn't know.
>>
>>21100909

I ran into that one.

"SHIV that works as movable cover too? I'll take it!"
>It's literally just movable cover. Not worth losing a squad member for

"Why the fuck won't THUNDER-1 go in my squad when I click it?"
>Check the unit information, the fucking thing doesn't exist. I could still dismantle it, though.
>YO ENGINEERING, HOW THE FUCK DID YOU JUST DISMANTLE NOTHING

However, hover SHIVs using suppression fire are fucking god-tier. You can tie up just about anything from miles away using those things.
>>
>>21100909

>>21100909

Trust me. Give Grit a Plasma Sniper for christmas. He'll kick so much ass you won't believe your eyes. Alice regularly one-shots Elite Mutons and even occasionally Beserkers with hers.
>>
>>21101050
I have two plasma/hover-SHIVs sitting in my barracks where I assume they're used in games of life-sized air-hockey. Are they worth taking with you on the field? I have fond flashbacks of the tanks in the old X-COM, but with the limited squad size is it really worth taking them along? It seems like a bad idea to give up the chance to bring along another medic, assault or miss the chance to train a rookie.
>>
>>21101050
Engineering: the merely impossible will be taken care of right away, outright miracles will take a bit longer.
>>
>>21101050
>not upgrading Tonk with plasma cannon
He is the best door crasher and Ethereal/Sectoid Commander spotter.

Also clutch in Terror missions, because they're so fucking fast and don't get zombified
>BEEP BOOP CIVILIANS COME WITH ME

>>21101068
>one-shotting zerks
what difficulty are you playing on? Or does the "damn good ground" ability add much damage?
>>
>>21101110

>>21101110

They're lightning-fast, tough, and have 24 moves worth of flight fuel. They're the ultimate FUCK YOU to Floaters who think they're all that flying about. Perfect forward scouts or suppression batteries.
>>
>>21101068
Snipers are stupidly powerful in this game. I'm tempted to put together a team of all snipers for a round to see how it plays out, but I don't have the materials for that many plasma snipers. That and I'm still trying to recover from the loss of my team's previous sniper as noted in >>21100893.

I have a few other snipers trained, and I can deploy them in a mission just the same with the same equipment but... it's not the same. Seeing some other prat flying around in his armor or popping aliens with his plasma sniper just feels dirty. So disrespectful, but until the aliens stop having heads to shoot off I'll always need a sniper.
>>
>>21101172

Classic, and yes, it helps a fucking ton. A solid crit with the upgraded SCOPE and a plasma sniper can (not often, but can) tear through a Beserker if you're lucky.
>>
>>21101209
Ah. I went for the pistol boost instead. It's saved my life a few times over.

Though I've been curious about flying suit + damn good ground, leveling up squaddies is such a chore.
>>
>>21101209

Oh, and make sure you have Opportunist for those delicious reaction crit shots.
>>
>>21101245

Flying suits don't give you a height bonus (for some weid reason)
However, using the flight suits to GET to high ground works fine, since they're tougher than Skeleton or Ghost suits, and even without the high ground bonuses a high-rank flying sniper is the aliens' worst fucking nightmare.
>>
>>21101209
Oh god I love fighting Berserkers. They're really only scary when your squad's close together and they have heavy back up. My favorite thing to do during a UFO drop is take out the aliens until there's only one 'zerker left. After that I have my squad take up positions all around it and pull out their pistols and take pot shots at it. I love watching it run around after each shot, even more so when my sniper pops at him from mid-air in his flight-suit.
>>
>>21101301
Presumably the height advantage is negated by the part of your brain screaming 'oh god I'm about to ffaaaaalllll' the entire time you're trying to line up a shot.
>>
>>21101301
Grapples are just so fun though. Until you grapple up into a cyberdisk without any support.

Ghost armour thankfully mitigates that problem. And it's so fucking useful for capturing.
>>
>>21101308

Making Zerkers run in circles is great fun. Especially with the Heavy Three-Shots-Of-Doom you can get. Bullet Storm plus Suppression, Plus the other one that lets you get another reaction. Shoot at the thing, then suppressive fire, when it moves, you get 1 or two more reaction shots. Get two heavies doing this and you can do the Zerker cha-cha
>>
>>21101373

Suppression fire is normally enough to get a dude close enough to stun, I find. I've not found too much of a use for stealth armour that can't be done better with flying.
>>
Fuck flyers. And heavy flyers. Fuckers always pop out on my flanks at the worst possible time.

That is all.
>>
>>21101448

Floaters are piss-easy to kill, even from the start. Heavy Floaters, I concede, are much more threatening.
>>
>Playing the game for the first time
>Get Archangel Armor, Laser Weapons, Squad full of Majors
>fuckyeah
>PC freezes
>Found out theres no quicksave

Why Teegee? Why?
>>
>>21101410
Against an Ethereal though?

I only got one by the skin of my teeth. Five alloy SHIVs and a single Sniper. Would not have been able to do it without ghost mode.
>>
>>21101485
It's more that they keep suddenly appearing in my rear while I am tied up in the middle of a firefight and then proceed to rape away on my now-flanked ass.

Heavy floaters are much, much worse in this regard. I'M TALKING TO YOU, BASTARDS THAT LITERALLY APPEARED OUT OF WHERE I JUST CAME FROM AND BLEW UP THAT UFO POWER GENERATOR THAT A BUNCH OF MY GUYS WERE AROUND BECAUSE ITS CONTROLE CONSOLE AREA WAS THE ONLY COVER AGAINST THE FUCKING SECTOPOD.
>>
>>21101500
I bagged the first ethereal I fought. Small room and assault pointmen earning their paycheques as usual. Nice interrogation bonus, but shame it comes so late in the game.
>>
>>21101489
It autosaves anytime anything dies, there is no reason you'd lose any more than one or two turns on a crash. I've had a couple of crashes and never really found it set me back at all.
>>
>>21101510

>2015
>Not having a guy overwatching your flank at all times
>>
>>21101542
There were three of the bastards. I got two overwatch shots off against them before they blew up the power generator.

Both missed, as critical shots are wont to do.
>>
>>21101530
With the health steal, reflecting damage and mind-control.. I'm rather glad they don't show up until lategame

Easily the most bastard enemy I've had to deal with. Just got no luck with mind control.
>>
>>21101583
Yeah, they always seem to hit with the mind control, but I'm usually lucky in that I manage to kill the whores before the mind control can do any damage. Explosives are your friend.

These days I have my psyker pop psi inspiration the minute I encounter an Ethereal.
>>
>>21100010
Oddly when I lost my captain heavy. No sign of the enemy, it was a night time terror mission and I rolled up my troops to bust down a door. Had my two assaulters ready to bust down the door with the heavy there to blow the fuck out of what was behind them.

Two chrysalids busted out of a window a little ways away and rush my position. One pulls up adjacent behind my assault specialist but doesn't attack.

She gets the fuck out of dodge and shoots it, my reaction fire went off too and took the other down a little, then a trio of the flying grunts busted off to the side and my sniper and support grenaded them all.

Left my heavy, and he had an 80% chance to hit both these suckers. So I took the shots. He missed the second.

It was the last thing he ever did. It tore him to ribbons. My primary assault specialist dropped a grenade on top of it and that was that.

Made sure he didn't rise as a zombie at least.

Currently my squad is being led by a sniper who doesn't miss.
>>
>>21101510

How do they do that? Unless the game just spawns them there. So many times I've seen three of the bastards come screaming up out of fucking nowhere and cried "WHERE DID YOU FUCKING COME FROM?"
>>
>>21101597
Yeah, even with two psyks keeping my will relatively high.. >>21100884

Fuck the bastards. Sectoid Commanders never gave me near as much trouble. Now I just scout with SHIVs and drown them at range with blaster rockets.
>>
>>21101643
I'm guessing they hear the sound of the ensuing gun battle and pull a HEY GUYS WHAT'S GOING ON HERE.
>>
>>21101643
floaters can jump "up" and land anywhere on the map.

You'll see them do it within line of sight every now and then
>>
Supply Barges are such bullshit. Aliens literally spawn in thin air, randomly show up to the front and usually get the bugged "they move to the front - then they get the reaction video, and then they get to move again".
>>
>>21101626

Is there anyone in this thread whos' squad ISN'T led by a sniper? Those guys are so ridiculously powerful, I swear. ESPECIALLY with psi-ops. With a plasma sniper and psyker abilities they can fuck anything up at any range.
>>
>>21101687
Yeah, a supply barge raid is where >>21101510 happened to me.

So fucking furious, especially since I only managed to stabilize one of the three guys that got downed in that industrial-sized clusterfuck.
>>
>>21101694
My squad's lead by an assault trooper who is also a psiops. Fucker goes into the lungs of hell every day and refuses to die.
>>
>>21101687

Are you kidding? Fight your way back-to-front. Get some grapple snipers on the roof of that delicious alley from the hangar to the bridge.
With a couple of guys below to tie up enemies, you can literally sit and watch as they get blasted to bits in Death Alley. I LOVE assaulting supply barges.
>>
>>21101681
They can also magically faze through ceilings. I can't count how many times I've flown my sniper onto a roof to flank the baddies when a floater trio's alerted and decide that they'll fly through the roof of a warehouse to send several bolts of plasma right into his bunghole.
>>
>>21101694
Mine's led by a LMG-gunner, no psiops. Those guys can wreck shit to no degree with a Heavy Plasma Cannon.
>>
>>21101720
Snipers are awesome and all, but assault troopers are all kinds of bad ass. I have a pair of them on every mission I go on and I can't bring my self to take them off. I don't even have to give them back up! Fucking one woman armies they are. I commonly send them off either as a pair or just alone during terror missions and they mop up chryssalids like it's nobody's busyness. I also love giving them arc throwers and watching them bag the various flavors of Muton. Bomb missions are fun as well, I'm practically swimming in captive Thin Men.
>>
>>21101694
Each member of my team is about the same, as far as importance.

Though the true leader is the SHIV, I guess. Dude's always first to the fight. He's racked up a surprising amount of Chryssalid/Muton kills. Wish they could earn nicknames.
>>
>>21101789
I can never have any luck with heavies. They can't hit the broad side of a Muton from 3 squares away. Jesus, I pretty much only keep one around so I can blow shit up easy.
>>
>>21101838
Give him the best armor you've got and a Scope. He'll hit maybe 50% of the time, and if you invest right you can get two or three rounds off per turn. With a Heavy Plasma that's fucking awesome. That guy is awesome. He's this giant Russian who was the single survivor of the first mission. I kinda see him as being the Team Dad. A giant Russian bear of a dad.
>>
>no love for Supports
There was this horrifying moment where my top sniper, heavy and assault were all in stitches (or in psy-testing), and and I had to do a terror mission.

Healing rooks, double-reacting to chryssallids.. A full team of supports would be so much fun. If only I could get more up to a decent rank without them biting it.

Man up and stick it on Classic you goddamned toddler.
It's not XCOM until your first couple of missions are horrible fucking failures where everyone gets horribly killed, and you start to appreciate how fucked you are unless you tech up FAST.

Fallout: Tactics Iron Man mode? Having to redo the very first mission like 30 times...
>>
I heard they reduced TU's to "You can move once and attack once", you have a max of one base, a max of 8 members on a mission, and there is no base assault missions.
>>
Question:If you already have all the interceptor weapons and at least two of the default ones on every continent is it worth upgrading them to Firestorms if you can spare the resources?
>>
>>21101937
Yup. It isn't the same as original X-Com, but it is fun.
>>
>>21101881
'cept in this game the soldiers are a lot more expendable. Bite your pride and move on soldier, the world won't be saved without sacrifice. Also never look at the memorial wall in the barracks. I usually keep around 20-30 men in my base at a time, if 1 dies there are a bunch more ready to take his place. Cycle out your men, don't confine yourself to one A team. If you keep all your eggs in one basket you'll not only be crushed by the loss of a great soldier but fucked over mechanically by not having anyone of a similar experience level to back him up.
>>
>>21101927
Is it the original?
No.
Is it fucking awesome?
Do I have to answer this one?
>>
>>21101963
> Memorial Wall
I swear that's the first time I've felt bad about loosing men. You don't realize just how many you loose until...
>>
>>21101937
You can move once and take an action, or you can dash move each turn.
>>
I'm going to play this game on normal or lower because there's nothing I hate so much as repetition. Repeating the same mission even once is worse than getting AIDS.

And there's not a damn thing you can do about me not playing on classic. Deal with it, you pretentious neckbeards.
>>
>>21101958
Yes. Put at least 1 Firestorm on each continent, you won't even need the jets anymore. Watching my own UFOs shrug off enemy shots like its nothing. I'm in the process of phasing out the original interceptors all together. Trust me, much better for you in the long run.
>>
>>21101994
The Tutorial is basically Easymode, so just pick normal and do't skip the tutorial.
>>
>>21101994

Honestly, the only one you're really cheating is yourself. It's totally fine, though: The game can be incredibly hard and unfair.
>>
>>21101994
I'm doing my initial play through on normal, waiting until I've beat it and know what's headed my way before ramping things up to classic ironman. My anus is quite tattered already at this difficulty, I shudder at the thoughts of what's to come.
>>
>>21102013
Okay then, about the SHIVs, what are the differences between the, what are their, three models? Oh and advice to new players, GET A FULL SATELLITE NET GOING AS SOON AS YOU FUCKING CAN! Once you've got all your sats up you can just sit back and only have to worry about UFOs and terror missions.
>>
>>21100383

No, cheating myself would be playing any difficulty that would force me to repeat any mission or even worse, that I would actually get game over and have to start over. At that point I'd just put down the game and never play it again because that is exactly how hard I hate repetition. Well, "never" is a harsh words, but I'd have to wait a few years at least. Now which option is cheating myself the most?

I remember playing the original Stalker a long time ago and I lost a save and was facing having to replay about 2 hours of play. I just shut down the game without hesitation and it took me 5 years to get into it again.
>>
>>21100329
SHIVs can bust through doors.

They're excellent breachers. And watching one bash through it amusing.
>>
>>21102077
Also use the hangar and put at least 2 interceptors on each continent. My dumb ass couldn't figure out how to get more interceptors until like 4 hours and 2 council withdrawls into the game.

New chrysalids aren't iconic at all

Still menacing though

>thin mints

It warms my heart to know I'm not the only person who calls them that.

As far as best moments go, the only thing that really sticks out for me was the time my heavy tried to fire a rocket at a Chryssalid, missed horribly, and accidentally murdered an entire squad of sectoids hiding behind a wall.
>>
>>21102103
Yeah, they kinda goofed by leaving that out of the tutorial, I guess they just assumed that you would click on hangar before too long out of curiosity to see what it did.
>>
>>21101720
My squad was lead by a psy-assult. My Sniper was second in command. Funny enough my Candidate was the my third in command psy-assult.

>>
>>21102127
I can just imagine how that would look from the squad's point of view.

Rocket squadie:FIRE IN THE HOLE!
rocket goes wide
Rocket Squadie:MOTHERFUCKER!
rocket hits wall, moments later it's raining sectoid body parts, Rocket sqaudie turns to teammates with biggest shit eating grin on his face.
Non Rocket Squaddie:Don't even try to pretend like that was on purpose.

I like their new design a lot more, it's just they lost a lot of their menace. I still jump when ever I see one, but that's mostly just left over fear from the old games. I quickly remember my power armor and plasma weapons and laugh at the thought of them getting anywhere near me.
>>
>have a black support guy named Murphy Law

Also, anyone else feel like the merc dude from Prometheus every time they have a sniper throw out the little spy-balls? I some times make barking sounds to my self when I throw them out. >>
>>21102425
Check the grey market a lot. There are tons of alien goodies you can get from base or UFO assaults that the game doesn't bring any attention to their value. Like the alien entertainment pods and their little soilent green packs are completely useless for R&D and building materials but they're a good way to pick up some quick zennys. That and sell off access alien corpses. They're not really that useful and besides keeping a few around for council requests (I keep 10 of each in storage just in case) you're pretty much set to sell off the bodies. Not a lot of cash, but it can get you a few rookies or an extra plasma pistol.
>>
>>21102454
Mutons look way frucking cool in this.

Much better than the fluro green bodysuits.
>>
>>21102470
Oh, and once you unlock plasma tech, capture as many fuckers with light plasmas as you can. I seem to get a lot of council requests for spare light plasma rifles.

>>
>>21102487
It's a lot easier once you get improved Arc Launchers. They'll regularly pull 90%+ stun chances even when targets are at 4-5hp.

The end of my first game.

It was Ironman normal. I figured that compensated for not putting it on Classic while I figured out how this one was different than the original.

I screwed up a few thing in this run, like thinking Scientists were actually at all important and neglecting engineers, as well as prioritizing lasers over everything else, because - you know, that's what you did in the original.

So when the base assault happened, I had guys with standard equipment, and a few laser pistols.

I actually did perfectly. Until the Chryssalid room.

I ran into six.

One turn later, and they were all dead. And so was all but one of my squad - my Major, my greatest soldier, a starting soldier.

He ran into a room with a pack of floaters and I can't quite remember, but I think a pack of mutons as well.

He lived. I don't know how, but alone, he lived and killed them all.

Then he walked through the door into the next room.

Straight into a pack of three chryssalids.

He was immediately raped to death.

I miss that magnificent man.

Finally beat it on normal ironman tonight. I'll do classic tomorrow.

I had a Sergeant with a Shotgun, he and his Squad were doing a raid into a large UFO that had landed; after clearing out a couple Muton Squads, they get ambushed by Heavy Floaters, Chryssalids and some Elites. Boomer (the Sergeants nickname) gets a reaction shot at an incoming Chryssalid with his Scatter laser and takes it down, he gets a second reaction shot (for some reason I think I had the upgrade) and takes down another Chryssalid. During the actual turn he wounds one of the Elites, after several rounds of intense fighting two of the squad is down and one is in critical condition, the Sniper is about to get eaten by the last remaining Chryssalid. Boomer is pretty hurt by this point, he has a medkit but it only has two charges, and the Sniper missed the Chryssalid at freaking pointblank range, and there are two Mutons and an Elite left in the distance. Boomer hits the Chrysallid with a 30% chance to hit, killing it and saving the sniper. When the turn ends, he gets a reaction shot against a Muton that is moving forward, killing it in one hit, next turn he moves in and stabilizes one of the other guys while the Sniper misses a muton -again- with a 71% chance to hit. Elite and Muton move forward, firing rounds at the remaining two Operatives, the Sniper dodges but Boomer gets hit... Not good cause he is down to pretty much 1 HP now, turn comes up, Boomer stabilizes the final person, the Sniper actually manages to kill the Muton. The Elite charges forward again, firing his plasma at Boomer who manages to dodge the shot, come back to XCOM turn, the SNiper fires, misses (She's a terrible freaking shot), Boomer turns around, 20% chance to hit... CRITS IT IN THE FACE. Boomer was responsible for most of the kills in that mission, at the end of the game he had 29 missions and 65 kills under his belt.

I for one do not regret taking Mayhem after blowing up six aliens (2 chrysalids, 1 sectopod, two muton elites, one muton berserker, already wounded) with one colossal missile. The other reason it's good to take mayhem is because with Danger Zone, your Suppression becomes a 5-damage death zone five squares wide centered on your overwatch target.

>>21104289
I can't really justify the cost to myself, though. The zip-line is also useless, for several reasons.

One, there's often nothing to zip-line TO. So it is a cosmetic feature in those situations.

Second, high ground is often an invitation to be shot at by EVERYONE. Aliens hate snipers, and often target them to a ludicrous extent.

Third, you cannot fire on the same turn you zip up as a sniper unless you have snap shot, and not having squad sight really limits the snipers range.

Fourth, the range limitations suck balls even WITH squadsight. You do not get a very good range with weapons at all.

Fifth, you almost always get a big sight range and end up popping a fucking pack of mutons (or three) who would have waited for you to kill their buds had you not put the sniper up there.

So you're JUST paying for the defense, and I can't justify that. Skelesuits are expensive as fuck. I need that money for satellites.

I just stick with Carapace until end-game, where I buy Titan, Ghost, and Psy-Armor and leave the skelesuits alone.
>>

>>
>>21104350
High ground gives defensive and accuracy benefits. Damned Good Ground with skelington armor is incredible.

Squad sight and being up high in the rear, as a sniper should be, is an incredible advantage.
>>
>>21104350
I hear you, the lack of high ground is an odd choice for a game that was initially hyped on the "secure a high vantage point for your sniper with this neat grapple armor." I counted a grand total of four maps that had elevated rooftops that I could access with the grapple. Of these, three of the rooftops had cover and one did not.

There are loads of UFOs with elevated ground (supply barge), but it's dangerous to go up there alone.

The archangel armor is neat, but you don't get the flying defense bonus (what) and if you do land on something higher than two squares off the ground you are unable to move due to what I can only assume is a bug.
>>
>>21104389
Yeah, but it means nothing when you pop three squads of mutons and he dies under an endless hail of fire.

As for being up high in the rear - it's pointless. His range is so short even with squad sight that I basically have to reposition him every other turn, which means he moves, which means he's worthless.

Anyone got any good tips for keeping the terror down? I can never seem to manage to keep it under control. A Satellite helps...once. Then it's going to keep rising again.

I love Assaults. You can just merrily dash right up to a guy, ignoring their reaction fire, and shoot them twice in the face, point blank, with a shotgun.

Up until the fourth month I thought satellites only increased your income and identified UFOs. So since I had a surprisingly steady income from pawning S.C.O.P.E.s, UFO bits, and various kinds of laser and plasma weaponry, I never bothered to build my second uplink.

Germany is the only European country in my game still funding XCOM.

How frequently are you getting more than two shots off with In The Zone? I picked it for my first sniper, but the next one that reached colonel got Double Tap. It seems to work out to about the same number of extra shots per mission, except you're guaranteed to get them.

I'm going to catch a Chrysalid alive, someday, so that I can torture it to death.

You are small time.

The capture went off perfectly, too. I had him and his bodyguards surrounded in the control room of the overseer ship, took out the bodyguards in one turn, then Cpt. Disco 'Socks' Viking ran up and tazed him.

Dangerously Cheesy.

So I'm not really clear on this myself, does getting mind controlled permanently reduce a soldier's will? Because that might explain why my one assault has such shitty will.

Actually, my man Gaston here just saved the whole damn squad with In The Zone.

Him and two others were taking cover behind a car when a Cyberdisc ran out of cover infront of them and three chryssalids run out behind them. Gaston pops the damaged Disc and then proceeds to take down two of the Chryssalids. Third one was killed by the other two teammates.

But you are still right, its usefulness is kinda questionable.

I wouldn't play Ironman on the first time through. There are just way too many places where the game deliberately fucks you over - especially in the "storyline" missions - if you don't know what to expect.

Finished on Normal. A lot of saving and reloading to get through. Now started on Ironman Normal as I've got a pretty good hang of things.

Classic just rails me too hard - my men can't hit shit, and despite very careful tactics, the enemies to just run me over.

My lead is an assault. Captain Sadako "Ghost" Saigyouji. Not to say I don't have a sniper, Captain Varkarian has about double the kills of almost anyone other then Ghost. She's just that nuts about getting up directly into someone's face and not dying to their shooting her. Or even staying down more then a day.

Well I just had the most awesome mission ever

Raiding an alien supply barge, I had my A team showing a couple of rookies the ropes so they could learn not to shit themselves at the sight of aliens

I have two guys who have more kills than the rest of my forces put together, a sniper called Zed and an assault called boomer

Zed recently became the first human to have a plasma sniper rifle and has shown repeatedly before receiving it why he is the best so now he is the goddamn god of death

Boomer is the psychotic god of war, charging through reaction shots like they were a light rain and feeding muton elites the business end of his shiny alloy gun
>>
>>21108423
Now that I have given the main characters of this story a bit of explanation I will show just how screwed they were

This is my first run so I am only doing it on normal

Zed is sitting back using squad sight to pop the occasional shot at enemies and Boomer is getting stuck in the thick of things while the rookies shoot the various surrounds

After taking down the first 2 groups of floaters and mutons I got my guys in order and opened the doors

To reveal the ethereal and three groups of muton elites
It turns out they heard my liberal use of explosives and were coming to say hi

As it was the end of my turn naturally the rookies got raped, 1 went critical 3 dead and Boomer the hard bastard he is on 1hp in his archangel suit, like his gun the first and only I have

Zed got promoted to colonel recently and took in the zone, so since he was above the aliens and had a clear shot at them he counted as flanking

He killed every enemy in two turns, only stopping to reload and cloak to avoid return fire

This one man turned a complete failure of a mission into a slaughterhouse on his own in two turns

I am trying to think what decoration he could get to properly show how awesome he is but anything short of a giant pair of alien alloy balls seems to fall short
>>

Pirated version eh?

The 1.8 GB patch a few days ago enabled it.

Nope. But I didn't patch it because it's fucking 1,8 Gb big, seemed only fix issues I never encountered, and according to some people, introduced completely different bugs.

I will always remember Maj. Takumi "Bishop" Murakami. He was a fine medic who died doing his duty. At the time of his death he had 10 confirmed kills, however the number of his squad mates that he saved dwarf that number. His dedication to his squad and his distinction as the first XCOM oficer to capture a Muton alive mean that he will be remembered, and sorely missed.

Maj. Takumi "Bishop" Murakami, Killed by a Cyberdisc during operation Bloody Serpent. ;_;7
>>
So, this is better than the old game.
>>
>>21109537

Better? That's a matter of perspective. As good as? Maybe. In four days I've lost nearly 46 hours to it, so it's doing something right.

>Spoilers ahead, don't read if you've not finished it
The ending could have been way better. No Avenger? No Mars mission? The whole thing seemed a bit needlessly cliche if you ask me
>>
After playing the game through classic and 10 hours on impossible:

It has tons of retarded design issues and is more casual than the original.

They've removed so much depth to the game compared to the original, it really hurts.
And then there is depth hidden away from you, which you have to unlock and it makes the beginning very tiresome.

First of all you notice that there is no base building from the ground up, because there is no random map generation thing anymore and everything is handmade.

It makes things less interesting and hurts replayablity in the long run a lot.
Then there is the spawn generation, the aliens do NOT walk around in the darkness, with the exception of terror missions, they have predestined spawnpoints which trigger once they enter your field of vision.

Any competent player notices that quickly and starts playing around that fact, and impossible difficulty you HAVE TO, otherwise you'll just get swarmed.

Further, the alien abduction thing makes you choose between 3 missions all the time, which is just a excuse to make the game more difficult since you can't take care of everything, unlike the original.

It also makes you choose between engineers/scientists and money, making you run the project on a tight leash, no matter how well you play.

Since weapons turn into fragments unless you stun the enemy and need plenty of them to keep your research up, it makes it time consuming to get any kind of good weapons up, because of the rather weird research tree and the high costs of manufacturing.

Being unable to sell medkits and other stuff you manufacture also removes depth, since you could, in the original, have your engineers produce goods to sell, to improve your cash rate.
Seems though they couldn't deal with that and simply removed it.
>>
>>21109337

Focus all your cash on getting as many satellites up as possible. Between that and a few good ufo captures, you'll be drowning in disposable income by mid-game.
>>
>>21109599
To the actual gameplay: The worst thing is that you can't customize your troops, for example give your rooks rocket launchers, machine guns and smoke grenades, you have to UNLOCK them, which hurts the customization a lot and makes the game less tinkering and experimenting.

I've been steamrolling through classic and played 6 hours of impossible difficulty, which really is impossible as far as I am concerned, since the aliens are much better than your soldiers, statistically and headshot you across the map, while outnumbering you 4 to 10.
Grenades on impossible, that have been bad on everything but sectoids before, are now utterly useless, since they don't even kill them anymore and still have shit tier range.

Also the projectiles are pure effects, wherever you hit or not is based on maths behind the scenes, which turns into shots sometimes going through solid walls and hitting you.
It also makes the shots look the same, always, disappointing.

Further the limitation of up to 24 soldiers down to 6 is dramatic, it clearly has been balanced for so few soldiers, but its a step down none the less.
Autocannons, Heavy cannons have been removed, replaced by the LMG/Heavy Laser, High Explosives are gone.

I feel this game is a big step down, even if it still is a good game, it seems like they valued cosmetic customization over actual customization, like you being able to change the look of your units, but not actually able to change playstyle.

Also those close up cinematics are annoying and should be removed, and all those cutscenes in the game show me they went for the casual audience.
>>
>>21109537
They each have their strengths and weaknesses and are, ultimately, different games. To call one objectively better than the other is to disservice both of them as they are their own experiences, unique to each other.

Play and enjoy both, become a more rounded person as a result.

Man, the original had really tense shots.

To see it slowly floating across the map, not knowing until the last second if it'll hit....

>>
>>21100916

GURPS. It has an equipment list long and varied enough to have lots of minor upgrades to gear over time without just getting a +1 gun, and the default combat system is oriented towards use of cover, teamwork, and suppressing fire to stay alive.
>>
>>21103756
I use Nanoweave to keep rookies alive for their first mission or two, once they hit squaddie I generally give everyone a scope, medkit, or arcthrower. Though occasionally when I know there'll be heavy combat I give my assaults Nanoweaves.
>>
>>21103793
You can still shoot out walls and cover randomly when firing at an enemy in cover

>Two thin men and a sectoid sitting on the roof of a two story house, near the edge.

It felt strangely satisfying.
Also,

>Have 3 guys with laser rifles on overwatch covering stairs

>Gets torn to shreds by 3 people at once

OH and

>Sniper with Laser Rifle on overwatch

There's so many awesome things happening all the time.

I always gave my Heavies nanoweave, and later Chitin to up their health. Made a tonne of difference early on, and combined with Titan armour gives your hoobies the ability to withstand enormous punishment (good for going up against Sectopods and the like)

I hate that bug, I got my entire squad stuck on one side of the last door in the first alien base raid mission. Only my robot was on the other side. There goes 35 credits.
