Last time we discovered the askvar, a highly industrious race of drow who trade with us. We have also captured a magical plague and stored it in 10 jars, one of which we used to infect some gantu, small humanoid crows that feed off of magic. They have come to feed off of the magical aura that eminates from the Shade Legion towns. Soon more hostile magic eaters will arrive, and eventually the fearsome blue drake will be attracted to the growing source of magic.

All hands start working on a new ballista, thick ropes are woven from spirit-silt and entire trees are fashioned and honed into perfectly sculpted pieces for the ballista. After a considerable amount of work the huge ballista is finished, surely with a weapon like this the blue drake will be decimated.

Evocators venture deeper into the nether world in search of greater souls, they improve their skills, dominating more powerful souls. However all is not well, the evocators become too confident and some of them are killed by the spirits they wished to tame. The evocators can now summon the souls of powerful beings, they feel that they have reached their maximum potential as far as summoning goes. The souls they summon aren't completely tamed, and may turn on their summoner on rare occasions.

The evocators try to imbue weapons with souls, but the souls seem to reject being poured into material items, it either breaks the weapon or the soul simply leaves the object. The evocators try a different method, they start to dabble in a new field of magic, enchanting. They believe if they become superior enchanters they can combine both evocation and echantment to create soul weapons, but as of yet they haven't been able to achieve any progress.

[E]
Since Xalothas has no avatar or real form it is difficult to create a monumnet for him, how would one glorify a god of nothingness? The builders and wizards start working on a new project in crypt, the builders start using iron to forge a giant dome, the wizards start trying to create a magical darkness within the dome, they believe if they imbue the empty space with enough magic they can create a sort of pocket dimension that can communicate with Xalothas. (Of course this is all speculative, they have no idea what exactly will happen.)

The iron/copper mine has been picked clean, the mine runs into the ground for about half of a mile, the miners wonder if it would be more productive to try and fine another mine or perhaps keep mining deeper into the earth.

The miners dig deep into the earth, they find a little more ore, but not enough to make digging worth while. Eventually they dig straight through to some sort of abyss, three miners lose their lives. The wizards start to imbue magic within swords, they find that they are able to keep it contained with the blades, but the magical energy dissipates too quickly. The evocators try to tame the spirits via torture, causing great pain by overlaoding the spirits with negative magical energy. The spirits slowly lose their minds and become mindless servants, their will bound to their master's will. However so far this has only worked on smaller spirits, larger spirits will require a different method, for they prove to be too powerful to dominate through force.

When asked, Elomir states that he has no idea what is inside the dome, he speculates that the wizards may have opened up some sort of portal to another dimension, although it's properties such as to where and if it's one-way or two-way remain unknown. The small dominated souls accept being forged into the cold iron weapons, and as they are the mages find that it takes a considerable amount of time and knowledge to enchant a blade, thus enchanters were born, wizards with the sole purpose of combining hard iron and powerful spirits to create the first spirit blades...When forged the enchanter often has the choice of bestowing a single property onto the blade, however can only do so if the enchanter has a good understanding of that property, as of yet they can only bestow fire enchantments, necromantic enchantments, and dark illusionary enchantments. Since the enchanters have yet to dominate powerful spirits they are restricted to small, weak enchantments. Warriors are now armed with minor enchanted weapons and armors, mainly fire enchantments.

[A]
A new ballista is made through the hard work and sweat of the drow workers.

[E]
A ballista is aimed at the dome doors in case anything is to escape. A drow is wrapped in a thick spirit-silt rope and the doors are opened. An endless black void remains inside, it sucks in light and eminates a fierce coldness. The drow who was once courageous is now left shaking, inching his way slowly into the darkness. After a few feet all of the ropes slack is pulled into the void, drow try to pull the rope but it is no use, it snaps and the doors to the dome closes with a loud crash...The noises still continue...The mages have stopped focusing their magical energy on the dome.

Unholy flesh. Why could such a adaptable substance be unable to accept other undead flesh? It didn't make sense, it seemed like wasted potential, the necromancers try to combine undead flesh with undead flesh, they sew them together using small iron needles and spirit-silt, they pump unholy energy in excess, chanting mad rituals at the undead abominations...

LIVE...
LIVE...
LIVE!!

The first unholy abominations were created, massive walking juggernauts of rotting meat and blades, they did not feel pain, they did not tire, they did not show mercy, they were the greatest and most unholy soldiers the drow had ever known...

Sadly it takes quite a bit of meat to produce such a creature, so far the drow only have one, they will have to scavenge for dead bodies to create more. In the meantime they can now modify undead bodies however they wish.

More unholy magic is pumped into the shrine to Xalothas, the energy fueling it's...Whatever it's doing. With a constant flow of magical energy the dome became immensely rich with magical power, so much so that it could even rival Elomir, so much energy was gathered that infact it could be used for some sort of world shattering spell..But it was consumed instead, consumed by whatever was inside that dome. It grinded and pounded at the iron dome, as if something was desperately trying to free itself...And then it happened, perhaps the drow should have been more careful, maybe if they had only taken the time to study it more they would've discerned it's proerties. The iron dome exploded outward, the pressure of the dark void within too great to contain. The dark sphere expanded rapidly, the inhabitants of the city flee'd for their lives, but it was of no use. The expanding black sphere enveloped the whole city and many of the inhabitants, only a fraction survived...Those who did returned to Axulfel, thankfully Elomir and the Triumvirate was among them.

Some wonder what happen, Elomir provides an answer, although it doesn't exactly make anyone feel better.

"You fools...You opened a dimension to Xalothas' realm, the great void has been unleashed!...If something does not stop it...It shall consume us all..."

I ain't complaining. Now all we have to do is keep expanding the magic darkness sphere to cover the whole world, ushering reality into the nothingness of the Void. That was the point of this quest, right? Our whole job was to conquer the surface world in the name of Xalothas. That was what we were working towards, in the long run.

To be honest, I have mixed feelings. I'll give Angry props for sticking to his guns, and I really didn't see this going any other conceiveable way. I kinda hoped that there'd be more monsters involved, mind you, something that we could fight with our military we'd been building up and never gotten a chance to use, but whatever. Them's the breaks. And we'll build up again, because, logically speaking, if we destroy the world, which is our eventual end-goal, early, the quest is over.

I also understand that a lot of people are disappointed with this turn of events. If so, I'm sorry for making the quest less enjoyable for you by voting the way I did. Anyway, I'll be more serious about this henceforth if that's the way you guys want to play this game.
>>
>>21115390
Excellent! Direct the death-dome of dark doom and the letter D upon our enemies!

Hey, you know those Spheres of Annihilation in D&D? And how there's an entire prestige class dedicated to using tiny shards of complete nothingness to destroy their enemies, before eventually creating their own sphere of annihilation to control? On the bright side, we have an entire city-sized one of those bastards to work with.
>>
>>21115441

>>
>>21115441

>>
>>21115476
To be fair, if we were completely serious all the time we wouldn't have undead trees, magic-eating plague-ravens, or an immunity to poisonous fungal spores. Mind-boggling insanity has directly fueled our greatest advancements.
>>
>>21115441
Early in the game we didn't have a goal, Elomir was born and some crazy old man said he was the prophet for Xalothas, we killed him. Later on a cultist group uprised and kidnapped Elomir, they killed Abolaxul, our military general, we resurrected him as a death lord and marched to the heretic temple (which was later rennovated as Axulfel) we kill all of their forces, but Elomir and death lord Abolaxul dueled, Elomir won and returned to Crypt where he agreed to share control over the shade legion with the triumvirate of shadows. The voters at that time didn't really want to worship Xalothas, they had their own agenda, but over time new voters came in and came under the impression that we were willingly worshipping Xalothas. Doesn't matter either way, tbh there isn't a goal in the civilization game, other than to survive. The voters can make up their own goals if they want to, but the ultimate goal is seeing how far you can take the civilization (because EVENTUALLY you'll lose.)

[E]
A state of emergency is declared, all religiously inclined civilians pray to Xalothas, and all wizards rush to the void to create a magical barrier, though they haven't discovered any actual way to create a magical barrier. They simply focus their energies to funnel the void towards the Askvar cities. They find that the progress that the void is making is extremely slow, to the point where it takes at least a week for it to even move an inch, the wizards are finding it extremely difficult to keep the expansion of the void under control, whenever they place a magical barrier the void just swallows it up!

Elomir states that he was informed by Xalothas that he cannot help them. "Xalothas is a dead god of sorts, he doesn't have enough power to affect the world...His help is out of our reach."

The wizards focus on studying the great dark void, it would seem that anything that touches it is sucked into it, never to be seen again, almost like some sort of reality eraser. They find that the void itself isn't magical in the slightest, but rather is simply an environment, not dissimilar from the air itself, they try to harness it, manipulate it, but all is lost. It's machinations are yet to be discovered, it's mechanics are advanced, more advanced than the drow have ever seen before...

Word comes back from the group of soldier at the Askvar capital, apparently a huge four thousand-man army of grimlocks attacked the Askvarian capital with strange flying serpents and giant black-skinned humanoids, the Askvarians decimated the army, but not after losing most of their army and decimating their capital's defenses. The soldiers return, a huge army of undead behind them, the Askvarians didn't seem to mind too much, afterall it helped them clean up the battlefield of bodies. They report that the Askvarians are in a severely weakened state, they only have about 1000 soldiers, if they are attacked now the shade legion has a reasonable chance of overwhelming them. Hopefully the grimlocks won't interfere.

We're safe enough for now to take this golden opportunity. Angrydorf is literally lobbing this at us as a gift, don't pass it up because you're an idiot.

You seem to forget that they have other cities. This empire isnt only based on one city. This will cause a war and we will have to deal with that and the giant ball of doom coming toward us. WE have to think the long game right now. Not hur der tech boost.
>>
>>21116157
Agreed
>>
>>21116161
This is their capital. Do you understand how many undead we have? We probably outnumber their entire population with our undead alone.
>>
>>21116161
They have a total of three cities, I believe, but given that their capital city was under siege, I don't think that they have many more than the 1000 suggested. Maybe 3000, at most, and given that we have around 7000 undead + mage support and undead trees, and that one abomination, I think it reasonable to attack them now in their weakened state, wipe them out utterly, raise their corpses, and take their technology. Or we can form a loose confederation of allied city-states with them, where we form the magical arm and they the military arm.

Whichever works, really. I like the idea of integrating our societies, myself. It improves us significantly more in the long run than just attacking them. So, that in mind, I vote directly against attacking them, and instead to join our two civilizations together now that the both of us are weakened.
>>
>>21116161

He said that they had about 1000 soldiers... not that one city had about 1000... and once we have that tech boost, and another 1000 warriors, I don't know how we could lose. We'd have equal tools and armor and weapons, superior fighters (undead which do not tire, fear, eat, sleep, and are generally tougher and stronger), and we EASILY outclass them in magic by miles. So your concept of a 'war' must be very inaccurate - this would be a slaughter, even if they had more than 1000 warriors and proper defences.
>>
>>21116214
Now that I think about it, though, our societies are pretty incompatible. I formally rescind that vote, and suggest that we wipe them out, salt, earth, lamentations, women, etc.
>>
>>21116214

How are we weakened? We lost a city, but we just took on +6000 infantry
They have nothing. If we miss up this chance because a few dunderheads want to stick their dick in the infinite vagina we created, I'ma be real pissed because losing this opportunity would be more of a loss than losing Crypt.

"LET LOOSE THE SHADE LEGION!!"

The army marched for Murrun, 7700 undead, lead by 75 wizards and a few dozen living warriors. Since the destruction of Crypt many of the living warriors were decimated, but the undead well make up for them, they are outfitted with iron armor and weapons. Skeletal beasts roam on the flanks, the death king himself, Elomir, leads the vanguard. They march...

The shade legion marches for Murrun...

With all the wizards gone only the novices are left behind to study the void, they once again start attempting to harness the void, to manipulate it, push and pull. But it's all in vain, it's as if the void doesn't actually exist on this plane, but is rather just a sort of overlay. It's strange properties are impossible to define accurately, and so far no real progress has been made. They need the knowledge of higher powers, perhaps another civilization will have the wizards required to harness this power? Hmm...

Scouts report that creatures similar to what the Gantu described as Mergons advancing on Shade Legion borders. When combatted it is found that these fierce insectoids have psychic powers fueled by mana, they are probably drawn to the void sphere and Axulfel's magical aura, the Mergons can both use their sharp appendages to tear enemies apart and use their psychic powers to blast foes away, pull them, throw them, crush them, and pin them to the ground. They are being kept under control by a small town militia but if anymore start appearing the militia will have to fall back to the city walls.

[E]
The undead hordes are kept secret by dark illusionists creating vast illusions to cover them. It is working so far...

Using magical bonds the novice wizards bind the stones of each wall together, it makes the walls extraordinarily sturdy, but requires repair on a daily basis due to the mana in the bonds dissipating over time.

The drow had already found a mine with yellow ores just a few hours travel from Axulfel, but they contain special yellow-furred krelk that spits an especially acidic bile, they also seem to eat the yellow ores.

More Mergon creatures have appeared, they've overrun the militia and are now even destroying our black berry farms, they're also harrasing our hunters, many drow are dying and our food growth rate is decreasing rapidly... There is about a hundred of these Mergon outside the city walls.

The dark illusionists start creating illusions of undead emerging from within the city walls, chaos quickly spreads but within the chaos the capatains and generals mass the 500-man army. Meanwhile the pyromancers lob huge balls of elemental flame at the city, setting the houses that are made from wood ablaze, the city glows red with fire, civilians feebley try to push back the flame, throwing buckets of water onto the ever-growing fire. Soon the enemy realizes that the undead are simply illusions, as their blades cannot harm them, while still in terror they amass, ever watchful for our forces, they see nothing, only an advancing tide of grimlock zombies, the armored drow form up on the walls and unleash volleys of arrows. They use catapaults in the far back to launch giant boulders, but soon the catapaults are set aflame, ballistas start firing down from the walls, killing many zombies. Generals and captains scramble to manage to soldiers, some putting out fires and others aiding in the defense. Our forces are 500ft from the city, we have already lost 200 unarmored grimlock zombies, but they have reached the southern breach and are storming the city, Askvar soldiers mass at the southern breach to push back the invading zombies.

The ballistas would've been mildly useful here, but they were more needed at the city. The rest of the zombies join in on the advance, the skeletons remain hidden as they are more valuable (they have souls inside of them.) The massive horde of zombies storms the city, pyromancers lobbing flames onto some of them. The flaming zombies set fire to the drow, chopping and hacking away at their infantrymen, however the far superior armor of the Askvar troops makes it difficult for the zombies to push through. However the overwhelming hordes eventually push through, killing the Askvar troops. There is still plenty more on the walls and deeper into the city, the zombies flood into the city, focusing mainly on killing soldiers. After many hours of fighting the zombies completely obliterate the Askvar forces, without any real tricks up their sleeve they were limited to conventional methods of combat. Our current forces stand at...

If you check the results we lost quite a few zombies, no matter however, for we can always resurrect the dead enemies, we cannot however resurrect our dead, for they have already died twice!

Like I said. No losses.

Militia man the walls, ballistas take aim at distant Merrgon and fire away, they manage to kill a few but for the most part the strange creatures are too swift to be hit by such giant bolts. The Merrgons haven't attempted to breach the walls yet, but the city has lost all of it's food income. The army doesn't know this yet, so a messenger is sent to inform them.

The domination of medium souls is researched, it would seem that while minor souls can be dominated through brute force, medium souls require a little more cleverness, often in the form of complex rituals that binds the soul to the weapon, enchanting with these souls becomes much more intircate and difficult, but the result is definatly worth while, the items that are enchanted are decently powerful, able to aid greatly in battle.

The zombies feast on the flesh of the dead, and more zombies and skeletons are raised from our fallen foes! Our army now stands as follows...

We most continue to the next cities before they have time to prepare a decent defence. Onward to victory and feasting!

The 400 civillians are terrified, they are hearded into a singular point near the center of the city, the drow await orders on what to do with them, what should we do with the destroyed city? Raid it for new technology? Burn it to the ground? Colonize it?

The zombies even begin singing a chilling song as they feast, the mages have no idea what's going on, it's as if some sort of hivemind is making them sing...

All that can be heard in the dead dark air is the gnashing song of the dead, the song is adopted by the Shade Legion as the whole, it is the Shade Legions victory chant, a sign of complete domination over their foes.

BITE THEIR FLESH AND CHEW THEIR BONES
GORGE ON THE BLOOD OF OUR FALLEN FOES
SNAP THEIR NECKS AND BREAK THEIR BACKS
FEAST ON THE LIVING WHILE THEY LAST!!
