You are Roch Dalrosh, son of Arach Dalrosh, heir to the Fortress of Iron and the proudest martial tribe in the continent.

Today you must make a choice, and one that cannot be made lightly. All around your lands, war rages on, and tribes and nations rise and fall with each turn of the seasons. Your homeland is rich in resources, the first true nation and your clan the first to unravel the secrets of Stone and Seed. For this, you are strong, but no matter how proud your warriors, you know that you can no longer rely on that prowess alone.

Allegiances are being made by clans across the plains and steppes, and your father knows the wisdom in tying your young country's fate to another. It is time for you to take a bride...
>>
But Father, I am homosex.
>>
Do you take:

>Angbarda Eriksdotter of the Ice Jarls
Strong of will and arm like her people, she will hold your hand in marriage as tightly as she does the battleaxes of her forefathers. Taking her hand means the blood of the bearsons will mix with your kin. Along with the ferocity and greatness of body that Angbarda's people bring, she will also be the key to unlocking the secrets of the sea with the dragonships of the frozen reaches.

>Rosmeril Al-kheri of the Whispering Dervish
Shrewd in the ways of the world, she will be wise and passionate. Taking her hand means you will be kin to the arteries of wealth in this world. No road, be it sandy dune or cobbled stone, shall be unknown to you, and every known path to riches will be at your command to use against your foes. Along with the Silk Caravan Trail, Rosmeril brings with her great alchemy and spice as more leverage in your dealings.

........
>>
....
>Yerde Khal of the Steppe Hordes
Even among those born under the watch of the Golden Mare, she is the swiftest of a people born on the backs of horses. Taking her hand means your people will be unmatched in horsemanship, your strikes deadly and your cavalry unstoppable. Along with the unrivaled skill that Yerde's tribe shall share with you, the very speed of the hawks that share the yurts of the Steppe Hordes shall be at your command, giving your forces the speed of their wings to know where to best put your already maneuverable forces to crush your foes.

>Song Kirara of the Jade Sun
Elegant, refined, true royalty. Song comes from a people and land you know only the very surface of, though like her lineage, it is as ancient as it is shrouded in mystery. Taking her hand means bringing two vastly different cultures together, learning new ways of thought and perhaps discovering a strength that no other allegiance can bring. Along with the catalyst of culture that the daughter of the Jade Sun brings with her, you will command a standing army that may very well rival all but the strongest of alliances in number.

[The first to reach 4 votes will be the bride you shall take]

She came with only a handful of retainers, all riding stocky dappled horses, through the fine Autumn mist.

You had heard of her people before, though the descriptions of their sparse and hard life the mountains would never have led you to imagine what she wore as she and her entourage passed through the Gate of the Forefathers and into the hold to the open arms and joyous bustle of the women of the castle.

Though she wore no silk or exotic furs, her bearing and garments bore her own majesty. Perhaps it was how she rode her horse, in fact the very idea of a woman riding so tall and so sure above the beast gave her that palpable aura. You watched her from a distance from your own balcony, and as if knowing, she raised her gaze up to meet yours...

The oddness of the ceremony, an amalgamation of two cultures that every so often opposed itself with the phrases of her nomadic elder's verses to the grounded language that your own priests have used, still leaves a strange taste in your mouth, though you think, perhaps, that it may come from the strange and new foods that the daughter of the Golden Mare had brought with her.

Around you an awkward, though accepting, air of celebration is well underway, and you are thankful that at least your two cultures can agree on the ram that has been chosen as the main dish of the feast.

Now your father and the elders of her tribe speak amongst themselves, leaving you to have your first words with your new bride. She looks at you intensely, though you cannot tell what feelings are behind her gaze.

Whenever I wake up. Should be around... 12 EST I guess? You guys can keep making suggestions though.

Anyway, here's some background then:

If you're looking at a map of the real world, then your home country would be the more Russian side of the Caspian Sea, though instead of it being a giant lake, it's like an opening to the Atlantic Ocean. I guess your country is a lot like France around the first millennium? Agriculture and metalworking is a big deal at the moment.

As for the scene, you're at the middle of the wedding banquet, the first quiet time you've had with Yerde after the hodge-podge wedding ceremony that your father and her tribal elders cooked up to try and appease the sensibilities of both customs. Yerde is beautiful, of course, but you still haven't exchanged words with her and this is your first time to get to know her past her title.

You can ask her anything, what her life was like, what she thinks about the marriage, what her hobbies are, compliment her, etc. What you say will be her first impression of you, and her response will be your first impression of her past her beauty.

See you guys around noon.

"Hmm, you are a Western king's son, with the way you speak. Your eyes are sharp for such details, aren't they?" she replies warmly, but in the low light of the torch sconces and the noise of the revelry around the both of you, you're unsure about her sentiments.

Is she making a jab at you for being too politically correct? Was she actually complimenting you for your own observation? Is she giving you the bedroom eyes or is that just your imagination?

[A] Be on the defensive and assume she's sparring with you with her words
[B] Take her words at face value as a compliment and try to continue the conversation - if you choose this, type in what subject you should talk with her about
[C] Run with the feeling that she is tempting you, and flirt with her as well

I'll lower the amount of votes to 3 too, since this is a new quest and all and I have no idea who is playing.

>[A] Be on the defensive and assume she's sparring with you with her words

"Well, I'm not sure how tribal affairs are carried out in the Steppes, but here there are benefits to noticing little things..." you say, though with a hint of annoyance.

If Yerde notices the edge in your statement or the implication, she gives no indication of it on her expression.

However, you are surrounded by dignitaries of your own people, the very kind that you note as having keen instincts for noticing such details, and they can pick up on your tone. Already you feel the eyes of some of the other nobles observing you from their peripheral vision.

It seems as if your exchange has shifted from being a private pleasantry to a minor intrigue.

[A] Continue with your current line. Be firm to show that she knows that she is in your lands now, and show the other nobles that you hold the reigns in the relationship.
[B] Shift your tone and the subject matter. You still don't know enough about her, and the very quality that she notes about your decorum might save you from unnecessary friction
[C] Lean in and talk with her in a lower voice in more personal matters - if you choose this, type in what subject you should talk with her about

>[B] Shift your tone and the subject matter. You still don't know enough about her, and the very quality that she notes about your decorum might save you from unnecessary friction

You clear your throat, hoping that the others know that they are watching you and show some tact. Yerde still watches you evenly, and though her gaze still shows no feeling past pleasantness, you feel a bit of uneasiness.

"Ah, little things like your jewelry!" you say, hoping to avoid an awkward pause. She seems to settle down as well, recognizing the segue. "They are rather interesting. Were they made for the wedding?" you add, and inwardly it still feels strange to reference your wedding.

Yerde nods and touches her earrings.

"Hnnn, yes, but not for just this wedding. They were my grandmother's from... three generations back? When she left her people to join with my ancestors. Our craftsmen are not too familiar with this sort of thing."

So you learn that your new allies do not have much in the way of smithing. You also feel that Yerde's admission of her ancestor and the similarity of their plights might mean something.

[A] Ask Yerde more about her lands and her people. You know about their horses, hawks, and archery, but little else.
[B] Sympathize with her about the plight of royal children, sacrificing for the good of their people
[C] Ask her about her personal feelings towards the marriage.

>[C] Ask her about her personal feelings towards the marriage.

Now that you think about it, Yerde is probably experiencing the same feelings as you are, or probably something more profound. After all, she is the one that is now being taken in to a new family.

"It must be strange... to have so many things change in just a day." you say, hoping she catches your meaning.

She pauses for a moment, looking at her plate. As observant as you are, you only notice now that she's barely eaten a third of her food.

"It is something that I've known for... a long time now." she pauses, playing with her fork. You notice that she doesn't seem to know exactly how to use the utensil. "... I was the firstborn among the firstborn, from his favored wife. Father knew that he would have sons, of course, but he always told me that being the child that I am I would have as much duty as my brother when he comes of age. It is a great honor to be able to do this for my tribe..." she says, and though she implied that her people were not as practiced with politics as your own, she has worded her thoughts rather well.

"... though... it is strange..." she says, breaking you from your inner thoughts.

"... to be Yerde Dalrosh..."

You can feel that this is a significant point. How do you choose to perceive it?

[A] Ease the mood and make a joke
[B] Make a romantic gesture - if you choose this, make a suggestion of what the gesture should be
[C] Comfort her with your touch

"It may be strange, but in time I intend for you to perceive the change as a point of pride. I'll do my best to make you happy to bear the name." you say, hoping that you sound sure of your words. She nods slightly at you, though now it seems that she is taking you more into account now. "I... may not be taking your name or anything of the sort, but I know of our duties. I am of your people now as well, am I not?"

She smiles a little and nods again.

"Yes..." she says, and her face shifts back to her pleasant calm. "... our duties."

She seems settled enough again now that she starts to continue eating, though she decides to forego utensils and the main dishes for some of the foreign fruits that she has brought with her.

Yerde is beginning to shift her attention, and might be fine to leave to her own thoughts for now, though taking advantage of the lingering emotionally charged air might be beneficial as well. Still, there might be other things that can take your attention in the dining hall...

[A] Talk with Yerde more
[B] Observe who exactly stayed for the reception past the ceremony
[C] You are near enough to your father's place that you can hear a bit of the conversation he is having with the dignitaries.

[C] You are near enough to your father's place that you can hear a bit of the conversation he is having with the dignitaries.

"... as expected, the Jade Sun is already rumbling with unrest about this."

"I can imagine. The Ice Jarls are taking this as a slight. They're a shifty lot. It's as if they don't think about what they do before they act."

"The herds are being driven from their plains. We've been grazing there for years, they know that but they're taking more land. Those Kirara scum are always making more warrens for the rabbits they call their people."

"The Dervish? Ah, at least they don't seem to care. It would be a nightmare to have the Silk Caravans against us."

"What difference does it make? The Fortress of Iron arming the Steppe Horde with steel and feeding our horses with the best of the continent's fodder? They are little more than nuisances now."

You catch these bits and pieces of conversation, and you make mental notes of it in your head. You notice that Yerde is listening in as well, though she is taking more pains to conceal her thoughts as she stares down at her food.

[A] Talk to Yerde about what you have just heard
[B] Approach your father to see if you need to be part of this conversation

>[A] Talk to Yerde about what you have just heard

"I suppose news of the engagement traveled fast." You say, nodding your head over to the corner of the hall.

Yerde seems to think a moment, and it looks like she is considering something heavily in her mind, before she opens her mouth.

"The elder is right. The Kirara will make their stance about this... us... known soon, though they'll probably send nothing but paper and lackeys instead of anyone of consequence..." she says, but looks a bit worried "... but these Ice Jarls. I have heard of them. The Jade Sun has warriors, of course, and many of them, but they are weak and soft living off their rice and mud. The bear people... are they as ferocious as the stories?" Yerde says, looking at you intently.

You are not sure of what to say. You know a lot about the Ice Jarls yourself, and though it troubles you to think of them as hostile, it seems to be a very present threat. But is it a good idea to bring that up? What about Yerde's flippant attitude about the Kirara?

[A] Comfort and downplay the Ice Jarls for Yerde. They aren't a threat yet, so why fill her head with worry?
[B] Tell her of the dangers that the Ice Jarls might bring. She told you about the Jade Sun after all.
[C] Ask her more about the Jade Sun. She might calm down talking about a country she deems as less imposing than the Ice Jarls and you might learn something.

>[D] Strongly of B.

"They bleed like anyone else..." you shrug, drinking from your own cup. "... though they can take more punishment than the average man. The sea is theirs, too." you add. "I wouldn't want to have them as an enemy, but I wouldn't want to be at war with anyone really. I'm sure that if the Jade Sun kept quiet and in their own lands, you wouldn't want to stir anything against them either, right?" you say.

Yerde nods. "Of course. But they have thick skulls. Too much time spent in the bedroom and the libraries for those folk." she says in an almost scandalous tone, before laughing a bit and leaning in to you conspiratorially.

You see a tint in her cheeks, and you wonder if she has had anything stronger than mare's milk in her life.

As if the fates are listening to your thoughts, your father announces his thanks to the guests for attending the wedding and emptying his larder, in the best of natures of course. There is a final toast, and the guests begin to slowly flow out of the room.

You feel a great hand on your shoulder and you see your father nodding to you and Yerde, not saying a word.

You both thank him for the preparations, and Yerde is ushered away by attendants, looking back at you over her shoulder.

"She is a fine woman. Between you and me, son, I was afraid that she would take after the horses the wanderers are so known for." he whispers to you. You smile and nod.

[A] Take some time to talk with your father - if you chose this, add a suggestion about what you both will talk about.
[B] Excuse yourself and go to your room.

"Ah, the dowry and the bride prices. Hah, such an age we live in that both sides must pay. But then again, it must be so... I cannot remember two people binding themselves so tightly as we are now with the Steppe folk..." your father begins. "Well, come Winter, our borders shall start to dissolve, and their people shall find true homes in our lands if they so wish. And of course they shall gain the strength of our steel. It is a small price to pay to gain their people. After all, in a span of a generation they will be our blood brothers, and it will be as if we have sacrificed nothing at all, or so we hope!" your father laughs. "... but as for honor?"

"Hmm... honor. That's a tough one. What exactly is honor...?" Your father says, hunching over and resting his chin on his palm.

"For the Jarls, it is honorable to go to the house of the girl you wish to bed, challenge a male of her family, maybe even her father, and beat each other close to death to be recognized as a man fit for their child... yet among the Jade Sun, doing so is so much dishonor that the daughter is expected to take her own life for attracting such a destructive suitor... Among our people, it is honorable to forgive a man who slanders you, and you are thought highly of for turning away from anger caused by words, but among the Dervish, it is cowardice if you do not defend your name from the smallest of insults..." He stands and sighs.

"There will be those that will see this as dishonor, choosing to side with the Golden Mare. Even among our people there is dissent about that. But I know two things about honor, son." he puts his hand on your shoulder. "It is honorable for a man to do what he thinks is right for his land. In the end it may not be as he intended, but he must always do so with his heart..." and he smiles as he begins to turn. "... and that no matter what the man, it is no honor at all to keep your bride waiting in her wedding bed." he smiles and goes off into the darkness of the castle's hallways. Your father is a wise man.

You tidy yourself up and go to your quarters, which smells much different now. Rugs and skins you have never seen before are strewn about, and by candles you see the silhouette of Yerde before you...

[A] Talk with her now, then have her know you - suggestion for what you talk about with this option
[B] Have her know you, then talk with her - suggestion for what you talk about with this option.
[C] Spend the entirety of the night getting to know each other
[D] ~your suggestion~
>>
>>21127247
I'm pretty sure you mean "have her know you" as a euphemism.

[A], we should get some talking in first, but we do need to finish the last, and arguably most important, part of the marriage proceedings. Get her comfortable with us before we do anything.

Sit down next to her and talk to her about how we like the changes she's made to the room. How we want to make her feel at home. Ask about the things she enjoys, what makes her happy.
>>
>>21127378
I agree with this only first open up with some compliments. Bitches love compliments.
>>
>>21127247
Approach silently, put a hand on the side of her neck then into her hair. Look into her eyes. If we see more apprehension than excitement/determination/submission, take the time to talk first. If not, kiss her, carry her onto the bed, pomf, etc.

If even after some talk she's not ready, then whether we put that back to another day depends on what she and other people expect of us. Do we have to show a stained sheet to prove that she was a virgin and no more ?
>>
>>21127378
>Sit down next to her and talk to her about how we like the changes she's made to the room.
I think smalltalk isn't appropriate for such a solemn moment. Think about her feelings. And about ours.

I doubt that the Steppes Hordes do the blood stained sheet thing. Horse riding can break the hymen. Considering how much time she spends riding I doubt that she'd bleed her first time.

Good point.

Well, then unless she wants us to do our duty and get it over with, if she's uncomfortable, we can take it slow.

We could maybe actually create a two-headed empire. The khan takes care of the military, the king takes care of the civil organization.

It is not as if she does not notice it when you sit next to her on the strange new sheets of your bed, but she tenses at your touch when you put your hand to her neck and begin to stroke her hair. At first you pause, not wishing to give her discomfort, but she turns and you see in her dark eyes the same lust that you know you must be showing yourself.

"I had always thought that my wedding night would be in a tent underneath the stars in between the pelts of wolves..." she starts, reaching out to touch you.

Her fingers are warm. So is the rest of her.

"Will you love me, husband?" she asks. You know what she means by this. It is her at her most vulnerable. Tomorrow, she will be alone in this strange land, with only you for comfort. She is not asking for a promise, but she is asking for something more.

And you say yes.

[A] You consummate your marriage. You talk with her afterwards.
[B] You consummate your marriage. You let your body speak for you.

We're also a pretty martial people. We don't know the structure of our military yet but I think it's pretty strong. I think we also have the best metalworking, fortifications, and really good agriculture. We start giving her cavalry bitching metal for their weapons and focus on heavy infantry we can be the hammer and the cavalry can flank the enemy and use their speed to cut off supply lines.

>[B] & [C]

You are awakened by the sound of a commotion. You are tired, and sore in places you did not know could be sore before. Now you know how a saddle feels like, and you are amazed but not all too surprised at her stamina. At least you know that she does not seem the type to gossip or have any friends in the castle that she could spread the story of how she outlasted you.

Whatever the commotion outside, she is sleeping at your side peacefully, and you feel fulfilled at least in this moment.

[A] Investigate what is woke you without waking Yerde
[B] Wake her up so that you can start the day together

[B] Wake her up so that you can start the day together

I don't want her to wake up alone in the bed, that seems like a bed message to send. We can wake up, get breakfast together and then investigate things. She's part of our life now.

>[B] Wake her up so that you can start the day together

She curls up more against you as you try to shake her, and you get the impression that she does not usually stay up so late. Eventually, she does stir, and she looks dazed for a moment. Eventually, her wits return and she looks at you and smiles.

The commotion outside grows, though, and you don't know whether to be annoyed or worried by the sound. Yerde doesn't seem to know the difference and cuddles next to you, seeing as she does not know the sounds of the castle as you do.

[A] Take a few minutes to lay with her and talk
[B] Try to see if she is still carrying her mood from the night before
[C] See if you can come to some semblance of decency and see what is going on outside.

You gently wrap her legs in more sheets and give her another pillow.

"I'm just seeing what's making all that ruckus outside. You stay here and I'll be back with something for you, alright?" you say with your most assuring voice. She nods, still calm. Though you hope that it isn't anything serious outside, you have no reason to think it as dangerous and as such do not give off an aura of urgency so as to worry Yerde.

She helps you put on one of your shirts laying on the bed with you and you put on a robe as you exit the room.

Outside the guards look as if they have been talking among themselves, though stand at attention when they see you exit.

"What's going on out here?" you ask, and the guards look to each other before the older of the two pipes up.

"The servants are saying that the main hall has a few loud guests. King Arach is speaking with them, but they don't seem to be calming down."

Interesting.

[A] Go down there yourself to see what is going on. You don't know the details yet and it could be nothing.

"You would rather play with ponies and bed little girls than chose your true neighbors? Is bedding a yellow dog really what you want for your line, Arach?"

That is what you hear from the hallway as the voices from within the hall become more understandable.

"Elrik, be reasonable. My son's marriage does not diminish any of our treaties or our trade. And think, you have passage in their lands now as well as mine!"

"We never NEEDED the permission of those stunted horse mongers to begin with! And you pass the daughter of Erik so swiftly?"

"It was never a formal engagement, and Erik knows that!"

The conversation continues in this vein for now. Many things go through your mind right now. Should you speak up in this matter? Should you let your father take care of this himself? Should you continue to listen in the shadows?

[A] Enter the hall. If they're talking about you, you might as well be present.
[B] Practice restraint. Maybe there will be more to gain from hearing what their candid thoughts of the marriage are

This is our wife he's insulting. We need to speak up, show how we can all benefit from this new found treaty, and that we will not have our wife insulted within her home.

If the Jarls are rather viking like, which I think they are, than hospitality is very important to them. But hospitality is a two way street and it is considered very much against the rules of hospitality to insult someone within their home while you are their guest.

It isn't like you to hide and sulk. You enter the hallway, and the two men stop their arguing for a moment to take note of you. Your father seems worried, but not overly so, but Elrik seems to welcome the intrusion.

"Ah, here is the princeling now. Come, Roch. Speak your thoughts on the matter!" Elrik booms.

You try to be as diplomatic as possible in this. There are many ways to deal with the Ice Jarls and their agents. You try to think about how best to disarm the situation.

Your people have long been friends to my family and you stand to reap even more from our friendship now. Those who you raid will no longer be able to escape inland, away from your mighty ships should the Hordes be waiting for them to leave their villages."

Augh, forgot that it's first to three.

The problem is that this isn't a situation where logic applies, it's a matter of honor. The Jarls felt that Roch was promised to their princess, and he ended up marrying someone else. Defusing the situation will take an appeal to honor.

[D] "Elrik, you look well. I assume you mean about my marriage to Yerde? It was a political consideration. The bonds between my land and yours have always been strong, even when we warred. Now we find out that we've been friends with the bears for a while, so obviously we have to tell them it wasn't anything personal. If this all works (and if we're the ones to tell the horses about what we said so voting [B]) Roch comes out smelling like roses and we get a three way alliance. I love politics!

Nope. What we said was "We knew you guys would be cool with this since we're bros, so we went and got ourselves some bitching new horses." Doing something for cold political reasons does not preclude having feelings, so marrying Yerde for the horses doesn't mean we can't like her.

Also, that's why WE need to be the ones to tell the Steppe elders of this situation. Our words can be easily misinterpreted as you did, or intentionally miscommunicated, so the elders need to hear from us that we married the girl to improve relations.

>[B] Excuse yourself to tell Yerde and the Steppe elders of the situation at hand

"Ah, but look at me, I'm not in a very presentable state at all, rolling out of bed. I'll put something more presentable and join you in a moment!" You say in a measured voice, hoping that you do not seem rushed.

Elrik and the others from the North do not seem to like your exit, but your father can handle them for now. A quick stop by the kitchen and taking some cheese and fruit upstairs to Yerde are all you have time for.

Inside your room, Yerde is still languishing on the bed, and her face brightens as she sees you enter.

"Ah! Husband. My, you thought you would have been the one making the food yourself with the time that you've been gone!" she says, before giving a happy smirk.

"Yerde..." you grimace, but explain the situation downstairs. Her face darkens but she seems to understand, and helps you get dressed.

"What do you want to do, husband?"

[A] Have Yerde tell the elders about what is happening. She won't be able to coach them on how to react, and you're not sure what their reaction will be, but you don't want to risk being away from the table too long to seem too rude.
[B] Find the elders yourself. As much as it is a risk to leave the Ice Jarls in their mood, you don't want to know what would happen if the Steppe elders were to have a confrontation of the bad sort.
[C] Take Yerde to meet the Ice Jarls. - this is a risky choice to make, but if played out correctly may be beneficial.

I think that she'll know better than us how to keep her elders from any confrontations and know what points to press to keep them from getting pissy.

She's our wife, we can trust her with this sort of thing.

Give her a kiss for good luck.
>>
>>21130083
Go big or go home, [C]. Talk to her and tell her that she should be prepared to meet the Ice Jarls. Grab a servant and have them tell the elders that they should come down in a while after you have talked to the Ice Jarls and introduced your wife to them.
>>
>>21130083
[C] Send a servant to inform the elders that the Ice Jarls are here and upset about the marriage, and that you and Yerde will end their objections.

The Ice Jarls have to accept her if we're going to keep the alliance and induct the steppe tribes in it. Our speech and the food will soften them up, but Yerde needs to impress them. They need to forget that they ever had ill thoughts about the horse tribes. The right clothing will help, but manner and behavior will do more. Keep the elders out for now, this is her show.

>[C] Take Yerde to meet the Ice Jarls. - this is a risky choice to make, but if played out correctly may be beneficial.

You sigh, hoping that this will end in a positive manner.

"Do you want to meet with one of the Ice Jarl people?"

...............

When the both of you enter the hallway, the conversation almost immediately stops. You can see that the Ice Jarls do not quite know how to react to her presence, while your father is looking at you with almost outright bewilderment.

~For choosing option [C], you will be in charge of both Roch and Yerde's actions in this meeting~

[A] Have father speak. Treat Yerde's presence as a matter of fact instead of drawing attention to it.
[B] Have Roch speak. He is the one that suggested this forum. - for this, make a suggestion on what should be said.
[C] Have Yerde speak. Show the Ice Jarls that they can get along with the Steppe - for this, make a suggestion on what should be said.
[D] ~your suggestion~
>>
>>21130515
[B], continue the conversation where you left off. Ask them how they are enjoying their meal and how their business goes in their lands. After defusing the initial shock introduce Yerde. Follow it up with discussing how she is interested in their culture. Try to aim it so that they talk to her about their culture to her.
>>
>>21130515
[D]. Marriage is a partnership, so both need to speak. Roch should introduce Yerde formally while apologizing to the Ice Jarls for not making his intention to do so clear before. He should explain that his goal is to bind all three countries together for mutual benefit and prosperity.

Yerde has a harder job. She has to introduce herself and thank the Ice Jarls for coming. If she knows anything about hospitality traditions shared by Roch's people and the Jarls she should perform them and introduce the Jarls to one from the horse tribes. Grace and generosity are key, she has to pretend that she doesn't know that her guests were here to contest the marriage and force them to pretend that they were not as well.
>>
>>21130610
This.
>>
>>21130515
[D] Have both Roch and Yerde speak, present a united front.

Start by having Roch introducing his lovely wife to the Jarls and speaking a bit on the benefits that the three peoples could reap should they stand together.

Have Yerde speak of what the Hordes bring to the table, her respect for the Jarls and their renowned ships that ride across the watery plains of the sea as her own people ride horse upon the land. Establish some level of kinship, similar rituals.
>>
[d] introduce your wife and have it be known that now she is on the council and her word Is as good as any. for yerde to speak Idk about having her act too womanly. maybe a tougher pose to show strength but not too much as to be cocky or rude.

Roch's introduction goes without saying, and everyone at the table knows exactly who she is. Elrik and his fellows have guarded expressions, while Arach is still unsure of the gambit.

Yerde greets the Ice Jarls with a bow. She speaks to them of their mighty deeds, and how their reputation is fearsome and respectable. Roch adds that no one here wants to be enemies and that having good ties between the three of your peoples will be beneficial for all.

King Arach takes the lead after this. He speaks more on details, things that Roch would not have much authority of knowledge to say comfortably. The Ice Jarls listen, and though they still do not confirm whether they like the new situation, they hold their tongues.

A noteworthy event is that Yerde chooses to serve and pour the Ice Jarl's drinks, something that these men appreciate outwardly and compliment Roch on having a mannered wife.

The Jarls, for now, are satisfied. They make no apologies for their actions, and make no promises as well on how they will report to Erik, but they say they will accurately relay what has been said at the table and in their opinion there is nothing troubling as of yet between the union. Still, they warn the King that while the reason and logic are sound, they are still a prideful people. Something must be done or someone must answer for Angbarda's account.

yeah if we could at least keep the alliance with the jarls I doubt any other nation should have a go at us. we need to keep them close one because they seem our largest threat beyond the other nations possibly allying us and two if we are to war them I want to know all there is about them. The Ice Jarls leave with grumbling and a noticeable lack of eye contact with you. They were as polite as their people are known for, but without the jovial nature that they reserve for those they call allies. You wonder if your actions today have truly convinced them that there is no great offense in your marriage with Yerde.

As if sensing your thoughts, King Arache lets out a sigh.

"No use worrying about it now, at least. They'll probably send word in a month about what Erik's thoughts are on the matter." he says making his way back to his throne.

"Go, spend time with your wife. Perhaps news of an heir will soften the blow of whatever headaches Erik's decision will bring." he waves you off, his voice heavy but you can see that he has a glint of mischief in his eyes.

Yerde, though very stalwart and composed during your talks with the Ice Jarls, is blushing.

[A] Spend the rest of the day with Yerde in the bedroom.
[B] Show Yerde around - for this, choose what aspect of your culture you would like to have Yerde learn more of.
[C] See to the elders. Hopefully they aren't too flustered about what has just happened.

could you give us a quick geography lesson sometime. From what I can tell the only boarders we need to be concerned with is the jade sun. Who are the most likely to act against the marriage. this is of course if we're able to keep good relations with the jarls
>>
>>21139376
we need to deal with the elders. Yerde will know the best way how ask her. A and B are both very tempting. if time permits do B and take her for a walk around the city/fortress etc.
>>
>>21139376
I say B since it would be a good idea to have her know the customs.

I'd like to ask about arming Yerde's people, is it feasible or do we not have enough resources?
>>
>>21139376
I would say [B] and show her what makes this nation unique as it seems each nation has something that they truly call their own.

Really, using this time to let people cool down a bit also.

It takes about a month to travel the breadth of Roch's kingdom. (This should also give you an idea of just how damn fast the Ice Jarls travel over the sea and how deadly a raid from them could be.) The red dotted line is the Silk Caravan that the Dervish control, while the broken lines of the Sun and the Steppes show the contested territory.

Also, to the West of you is developing not-Europe, while below you is a big forest that no one really wants to settle.
>>
>>21139588
It's time to adopt an expansionist policy. Starting with the forest to the south.
>>

anyone else seeing the need for roads or hopefully getting the use of the caravan routes to bind the kingdom and the steppe together. Also we're in a good spot for ocean trade.
>>
>>21139660
Before thinking about that, we should clarify what will be our relations with the steppe people and their leaders.
How are they organized now, and how will it change now that we're suppose to unite ?

>[B] Show Yerde around - for this, choose what aspect of your culture you would like to have Yerde learn more of.

As you excuse yourselves from your father's presence, both you and Yerde let out a collective sigh of relief.

"You told me they are but men, husband, and now I see that it is true. But their names are well given, and they are as close to bears as men can be!" Yerde says, and you nod in agreement. Though you do have a few inches over the tallest of the men that Yerde brought with her as her entourage, the Ice Jarls towered over them by a head and then some.

As you walk with her, Yerde notices the many suits of armor and tapestries of war decorating the halls of the Iron Fortress.

"Ah! So different from our own..." she says, placing a hand on both a full suit of armor and the fabrics of a battle scene.

"Yes. We may not be giants, but we still come from warriors true. Only a fair two thousand make our standing army, but that would swell five times at the time of war!" You say with pride, puffing up. "... and still, one of our men would be a match against any three. None have taken to the fruits of the earth and mine as we have." you say, flicking a finger on the suit of armor and letting out an echoing, melodious note.

Yerde seems to be genuinely interested, though perhaps you are talking too much of manly pursuits?

[A] You know Yerde well enough to see that she has a good interest in war. Speak with her about that.
[B] She seemed to equally enjoy the tapestry. Perhaps your family history is in need of explanation?
[C] Do not be so self-centered. Ask Yerde of her own people! - you may add a suggestion as to what this may be.
[D] ~your suggestion~

forest has to be empty for a reason. also just something i noticed caravan routes don't go anywhere near it. look at not europe doesn't even have a route to it. could it be because of how close to the forest you would end up? but yeah it would be nice. might be able to offer the Jarls some nice lumber for ships

>[C] Do not be so self-centered. Ask Yerde of her own people! - suggestion being compare the armies

Yerde's face seems to withdraw a bit, and her usual pleasant demeanor shifts. "I am not so sure of my people's own specific might or numbers, but I can tell you of our past?" she says, and you nod, telling her to go on.

"We have never really recorded our history as you do, husband, but then again, it is only recently that we can call ourselves a nation. Your... our... King... knows of this well, I am sure, though from my travels it seems that it is not common knowledge." Yerde states.

"My father is in the shades of his life. We live in a very harsh land, you know. But that must be why we are strong as well." she says wistfully, touching a tassel of your tapestry. "The Jade Sun... in truth, I do not know exactly how we came to be as we are, but my father in his youth, younger than we two, went from tribe to tribe, binding their bridles together. He is the reason why we are what we are." she says with her own hint of pride.

"And he also knows our faults. We cannot remain as we are. We have a saying that a horse will know a stable..." she says.

You nod, gaining the general idea. "Our people are as we are, then." you nod, and she smiles and says "In time, husband."

[A] Press on to learn more about Yerde's people - you may add a suggestion for this
[B] These matters are getting heavy. Maybe something recreational?

(Let's do a bit of both)

"Ah, but maybe there are others you can talk to about this, husband. I only know of things after my birth and as I have said, I am not that knowledgeable of the past histories. There are people that can show you of my land!" she says, and leads you to the quarters of her dignitaries.

Inside it is almost a grander version of what Yerde did for your room, and the smoke is much thicker. There seems to be someone plucking a stringed instrument off to the side, and while the elders within nod at you and the ones that can show respects to their princess, they are not a truly boisterous people.

[A] Let Yerde speak for you for now. See what she thinks is most important for you to know.
[B] Introduce yourself. Give an impression for them to bring back to her father.
[C] Take a seat and let them acknowledge you.
[D] ~your suggestion~
>>
>>21140471
While they are guests they're also our metaphorical in-laws. Bow in our way, and let Yerde conduct introductions. She's more likely to know what they value. [A], I guess?
>>
>>21140471
>>21140537
On the other hand, they're OUR guests, in our home. Plus we just married their princess. [B], thank them for coming, ask for their names so that we'll remember them when we see them in the future, since there will be considerable travel between our countries now.
>>

"Good afternoon, honored elders."

You say, and they nod. At least they're acknowledging your presence. The man playing the instrument looks at your for a moment then sets aside his instrument.

To your side, Yerde mouths "Take a seat."

You do so, feeling strange to sit on cushions and cross legged. You haven't really sat in this position since you were younger. Thankfully, your experience as a diplomat has been building recently and is still fresh in your mind due to the Jarls, and you speak again before the silence becomes too long. In truth, you actually think that they are comfortable with silence, but it still wouldn't do not to know them.

"Ah, thank you for escorting my wife. I know it must have been a very long trip. May I know the names of my wife's associates?" You say.

A few of the elders look to each other first, and they speak. You take note that only the three oldest looking ones give you their names.

"It is no trouble. I am Bhal, sire."

"I am Torchuk."

"And they call me Ram here. I find that your tongue does not follow the word that we use for my name, so it is just what it would be in your language."

Ram smiles at you, and he seems to be the friendliest, as well as the most senior, of the group.

"So, what brings you here, young prince? I hope that everything is sorted with your other visitors outside?"

[A] Tell him about the Jarls
[B] Say yes and that it is nothing to worry about
[C] Ask about Yerde's culture and history from them.
[D] ~your suggestion~
>>
>>21140941
[C] It would be best to not ruin the mood with talk of possible war, and by asking about their culture we might get some hints as to their feelings towards the marriage.
>>
>>21140941
[A]

"Some of the Jarls threw a minor fuss over marriage and feeling cheated but it is not overly serious.

Their tempers are rather mercurial, they change between anger, politeness, and boisterous friendship with great ease, their tempers are quick to rise and quick to settle."
>>
>>21140941
[A] then [C]. We want to say that the Jarls came to contest our alliance, and we managed to get them to leave with Yerde's help. Then we ask about the steppe tribes, particularly marital traditions. Martial traditions too later, once we've broken the ice some.
>>
>>21140941
fusion of A and C
>>
Do you prefer us writing what we want you to have us say, or what we want to say? I probably could do the latter, but it takes time for me to get in character enough to make it good. Probably a thread or two more before I have enough of a handle on the setting and character.
>>
>"I hope that everything is sorted with your other visitors outside?"
No... I will have to sort things out with the Ice Jarls for many decades... Hopefully.
But the matter they came with this morning will not have to be discussed again until they go back to Erik the Jarl and come back again.

>[A] and [C]

"Only a little misunderstanding. The Jarls are just quick to show their emotions in the most obvious manner." you say, hoping that it is just vague enough not to cause alarm.

"Mmm... Ice Jarls. We have very much and very little for them." Ram says, tapping his pipe. You see that a few of the others nod and grumble, while the others do not seem to care much at all.

"Ah, pardon, but I do not know much about the specifics of the past you share with the Ice Jarls." you say. In truth, you only know so much about Yerde's culture, as much as you suspect she knows of yours anyway, but you would rather not hint of your ignorance so openly.

"Ah, it is just that as I say. Some of our tribes have fought with them. Some of our tribes care little for them, and some may well be called their friends. You will find that is how the children of the Golden Mare are in this world, your highness, apart from those wretched Kirara gophers. We are one people, but with many stories."

You nod, and you can see that Yerde is rapt at attention too.

[A] Ask more about the past between them and the Jarls.
[B] Ask more about them and the Jade Sun
[C] Ask about the ties that bind the Steppe Hordes, and about Yerde's father.
[D] ~your suggestion~

[C] Ask about the ties that bind the Steppe Hordes, and about Yerde's father.

We ought to learn more of our dear blushing bride.

And ask about the Jade Sun as well if we have time.
>>
>>21141149
Storytime is the best time. Let's hear about Yerde's father; she already said she didn't know much about that time. Besides, we'll be dealing with him for a while and he's going to have multiple levels of expectations of us.

Actually, that brings to mind a question: How is leadership of the Hordes going to be decided in the next generation? He has sons, yes?
>>

A, C, B in that order.
>>
>>21141149
Ask about his shirt. It looks well made, and knowing who controls the textiles in this setting might be of use.

"I see. Our land has a something of that. The villages started to band together for strength when my ancestors began to make what would become the Fortress. But that is one place. The Steppes are so vast. How did he bring all those clans together?" you ask him.

Yerde looks at you with a soft stare. She seems to be happy at your interest.

"Hmm... well, ours is a people who live on their stories, young prince. The Jarls have their epics, and the Dervish have their fairy tales. Your people their records and the Jade Sun..." he grimaces "... their lies..."

"... there once was only one tribe, prince Roch. All the Steppes empty save for beasts and marauders. This tribe was made of peaceful folk, yet the world is no place for peace..." he takes a long drag from his pipe. "... one day, a lone shepherd boy returned from grazing, to find that the tents of his people crushed, and the footprints of his people scattered everywhere, with the tracks of villains following them. He was a young boy, and surely would have died. But as sadness swept over him, he heard a voice speak and ask him why he cried. He said that he would surely die... (con.t)"

"... the voice said that it would help the child, if only he would be brave and stop his tears. The child did so, as young as he was, and when he turned to see who spoke to him, there was a horse, as brilliant as the sun against the darkness. She fed him from her own milk, and told him to ride on her back. If he were to be brave, she would bring him to his tribe. And so the little boy said that he would. All across the land for a waxing and waning of the moon they rode, bringing his people back. The boy had many hardships to face, to slay a lion, to match wits with a book that could not be read, and to catch the the sky in his hands. But he did not falter and succeeded in each task, and grew to be a strong man as he brought his people back together. He was the first tribesman of ours, you see, and every tribe of the Steppes have this as their oldest story. Yerde's father brought the tribes back together, as different as we are now, and reminded us that we are scattered but strong. There is more, but for now that is enough." Ram says, putting away his pipe.

"As for the Jade Sun... they too are in our stories... but not ones I can tell lest they bring bad fortunes on your new marriage, ahaha!" he laughs, and you thank him for his telling. Around you the others nod and say that all of this is true, and Yerde seems happy with a childlike expression as she listened. You will have to learn more about the stories when you can.

Bear in mind that the two things that made the mongol hordes under Temujin so formidable were insanely-good discipline and mobility. By mobility I mean the lack of a slow-moving supply line; they moved as fast as their horses, not as slow as their baggage train.

Simply pairing up well-armored footmen with nomad cavalry isn't going to do too much good on a long campaign.
