Together with Zeke, Selene, Raziel, Azariel, and Cassiel, the five of you soar through the sky, and eventually, Vithriel and a very wobbly Dariel follow, as the sun finishes it's arc across the sky.

Suddenly, there was a strange screeching from above the clouds... and Neiriel dives downward, wings folded, punching a hole through the clouds as she dives directly toward Vithriel, angrily, talons at bear. You know that if she was truly angry, she'd be using magic, but luckily, they only collide at a great speed, sending green and blue feathers flying.

"Don't worry about it." Zeke said to Selene. "They do that sort of thing all the time."
"I figured!" She called back, and giggled.
Suddenly, The Soul activates, and you feel Kaliel wake up, panicked- some sort of nightmare, you think.
>>
>>21180096
<Kal? What's wrong?>
>>
<Kal? What's wrong?> You ask, over the ring, as you fly a bit away from the group for privacy.
<Just... just a bad dream.> Kaliel said, her heart pounding. <But I'm awake now. Everything's fine. How are you?>
>>
>>21180180
<We're all flying. It's fun.>
>>
>>21180180
<I'm out flying right now.>
>>
>>21180180
<We're out flying, and Lewin's sister is with us. You should join in, too!>
>>
>>21180180
<Good, we're out flying right now if you'd like to join us. Get those nightmares off your mind.>
>>
<We're all out flying right now.> you say. <It's fun. Lewin's sister is with us. You should join in, too!>
<... Yeah, I should.> She said, finally. <I've been studying too much anyway. It's starting to get into my head.>

As you watch, one of the windows in the castle below open, and a red robed kalak woman leapt out, wings spread, and she started beating them, making her way up to catch up to you.

"Hello!" Selene called, as Kaliel approached.
"Hello!" Kaliel responded, and gave her a grin.
>>
>>21180275
Make with the introductions.
>>
>>21180275
Give her the flying Kalak equivalent of a hug. Wing touching maybe?

"Kaliel, meet Selene, Lewin's sister. Selene this is my girlfriend Kaliel.
>>
>>21180275
>a red robed kalak woman
Like, she's wearing a red robe? Or she's just a red kalak wearing a robe? Because wearing a robe that matches your plumage just doesn't look good.
>>
Edging toward Kaliel, you gently brush the tip of your wing against hers.
"Kaliel, this is Selene, Lewin's sister." You say, and turn to Selene. "Selene, meet, Kaliel, my girlfriend."
"Nice to meet you." Kaliel said- her eyes were a glowing amber, now, you notice.
"You too." She said.

Far below, you see Vithriel and Neiriel collide with the ground, then spring to their feet, wrestling. Vithriel takes off again, soaring upward, and Neiriel clenched her fist up at him... and he held out another long, blue feather, cackling.
>>
>>21180383
"Oh dear. If he keeps taking her feathers like that, she's going to end up crestless."
>>
>>21180383
Call down to him. "Keep it up, Vithriel, and maybe I'll pluck some of YOUR crestfeathers!"
>>
>>21180441
Oh god, that's a sex thing, isn't it
>>
>>21180450
Stealing crest feathers is the kalak version of a panty raid.
>>
"Oh dear." You say. "If he keeps taking her feathers like that, she's going to end up crestless."
"There's a low level healing spell which regrows hair and plumage." Kaliel said. "I wouldn't put it past him if he keeps taking the same feather every time. Every time he gets time off from being a lizardman mother, he does things like this as a way of winding down."
"Keep it up, Vithriel, and maybe I'll pluck some of *your* crestfeathers!" You cry.
"You're just jealous you don't have anything long enough to pluck!" He responded.
"Erm, what exactly do crests, well, mean? To kalak, I mean." Selene asked.
>>
>>21180462
"Long crest feathers are considered very feminine and beautiful. My crest is actually quite masculine."
>>
>>21180462
It's similar to hair on a human, I suppose, longer is more feminine, and shorter is more masculine, with a few exceptions

>>
"Long crest feathers are considered very feminine and beautiful." You say. "My crest is actually quite masculine."
"She's still very beautiful, though." Kaliel said, and you feel her gently brush your wingtip with hers.
"Oh, okay. So, like... hair."
"You see how Neiriel's are really long compared to mine? Yeah, that means she's like your stepmother."
"So it's more like a bust." She said, and giggled.

"One second." You say, and you suddenly fold up your wings. You fall out of the sky, shifting your weight until you were falling headfirst, and then you hone in toward Vithriel, as stealthily as possible. He chuckles, and then whirls around as you collide into him, your talons reaching for his crest. He suddenly extends one of his wings, and the two of you go spinning, until you were on the bottom- and with a feeling like someone taking out a rather small hunk of your hair, Vithriel chuckled mischievously, and darted away, a white feather in his hand. You spread your wings and try to follow him, but he's faster, and more used to the form than you are.

You grit your beak, determined, and it clicks loudly as you push yourself. Your wings spread, and you slowly, carefully start making your way upward, ever so upward. Eventually, your wings claw a hole into the clouds, and then you close your eyes... and focus, before diving back down, tearing out of the sky.

Vithriel doesn't even see you coming. You land on his back, pinning his wings with a single arm, and then you pry your own feather out of his hand, and then pluck one of his. He squeaks, and then you push him further downward, boosting off of his back as you spread your wings, flying back up to Kaliel and Selene again, holding a very dark green feather in one hand, and a white one in the other.
Kaliel started giggling.
"Hey, can I have your crestfeather?" She asked. "As a keepsake?"
>>
>>21180736
"Well, I don't think I can put it back, so yes, you can have it. Maybe I'll make Vith's into a quill."
>>
>>21180736
"Sure."
She's totally building a shrine to use, and a crest feather is the last missing piece she needs to complete it.
>>
Rolled 23

>>21180736
"Of course, m-lady." Blow it over to her on a soft magical wind so that it lands in her hair (if kalak have hair.)
>>
>>21180762
They have feathers. The closest thing to hair they have is a crest.
>>
>>21180736
"Sure. But what do we do with Vithriel's?"
>>
>>21180759
she needs it so she can complete Ishelda's phylactery.
>>
>>21180798
Implying the phylactery isn't the ultimate shrine.
>>
"Of course, m'lady." You say, and hand it to her. For a moment, both of you have to tuck a wing in so that you can reach one another without colliding, and then she gives it a kiss with the tip of her beak and slips it into her robes. "But what do we do with Vithriel's?"
"Make it into a quill." She said. "Obviously. That's what you do with purloined feathers- except for Gehenna, because he's insane and plucks his own feathers out to make into quills."
>>
>>21180827
"Is quill-picking some sort of tradition amongst Kalak? What's so crazy about using one's own feathers as quills? That seems rather efficient to me."
>>
>>21180846
I imagine it's a bit like panty raiding.
>>
>>21180875
Except ripping off a piece of someone and not stealing an article of clothing.
>>
>>21180892
It's about as personal. And instead of fapping with it like panties, you can preen yourself with the sharp end.
>>
>>21180827
"Why didn't you tell me stealing feathers was acceptable before Dariel lost all his fluff?"
>>
Rolled 71

>>21180875
So...

Gehenna wears panties?
>>
>>21180899
Didn't think of that... hmmm.
>>
"Is quill-picking some sort of tradition amongst Kalak? What's so crazy about using one's own feathers as quills? That seems rather efficient to me."
"That's what Gehenna says." Kaliel said. "I mean, it's the best way to brag about something like that. You just pull out your spellbook, write a few things with Vith's quill, and then give him a gloating look. That's how it's supposed to work when you make fun of someone."
"Why didn't you tell me stealing feathers was acceptable before Dariel lost all his fluff?"
"Because stealing fluff is, well, kinda creepy." She said. "And it's not always acceptable. If you do it to someone that isn't a friend they're probably going to get seriously upset. But see, Vith isn't."
You look down, and you see Vithriel laughing, waving up at you.
>>
>>21180943
Wave his feather back at him, then stick it in our inventory.
>>
Hmm, Aeriel's not here. Isn't he the one who came up with this flight idea? And it looks like he failed to persuade Sardriel, so we don't get to see his kalak form.
>>
>>21181034
We were just talking to Sardriel. He's resting.
>>
You wave the feather back at him, before slipping it into your inventory. While you're there, you see that you still have the sacrificial knife from Azariel's tower inside the pocket of space just behind your head.

Vithriel chuckles again.
<I'm impressed, my apprentice!> He called, and dove to the ground again.
>>
>>21181048
And so the student becomes the master

"I see. And what about Neiriel? I can't tell if they hate each other or if they're fooling around and like each other in some weird vitriol-filled love/hate dynamic."

"I see." You say. "And what about Neiriel? I can't tell if they hate eachother or if they're fooling around and like eachother in some weird vitriol-filled love-hate dynamic." You say, and she giggles.
"You'd know more than I do." She says. "I'm bad with those sort of things. I think Neiriel hates him, but Vith doesn't seem to hate anyone when he has time off. He's just rather mischievous."
>>
>>21181124
"Hey Dariel, you're looking kind of wobbly there."

"Well, that's a shame." You say. "Vithriel doesn't seem so bad. But he could stand to ease up on Neiriel a bit."
"Probably." She said.
"That reminds me, that I wanted to spend some more time with Neiriel. I would like to get to know her better, but I haven't really had the chance to do so since she came to New Arcturus."
"Well, she's down there." Kaliel said, and gave you a kalak grin. "We can go talk to her now."
>>
>>21181243
Dive down there.
>>
>>21181243
Dive dive dive!
>>
You give her a grin, and dive, Kaliel and you both dive downward, wings folding up as you fell headfirst, spreading your wings at the last moment, you and Kaliel skid to a stop, landing fully on the ground. Neiriel was grumbling to herself, staring up at Dariel. Dariel already seemed to be sobering up, it looked.
She sighed, audibly. "Done flying for now?" She asked you.
"Yeah, for now." Kaliel said.
>>
>>21181243
"Let's head down then. Do you think she would appreciate getting Vith's feather, or would that be too cheap for her?"
>>
>>21181330
"I'm surprised he can even fly on swamp brew."
>>
"I'm not sure about the custom involved, but would it be a faux pas to offer you this?"
Pull out Vith's feather and show it to her.
>>
>>21181356
It's not the same. You can't gloat over having it if you didn't earn it. We must instead teach her our bouncing ways.
>>
"I'm surprised he can even fly on swamp brew." You say, catching her eyes.
"Tch, vithriel." She grumbled. "But yes, Dariel's always been very good at flying. It comes natural to him. He was even able to fly before he moulted. He spends almost his entire life in the air. He'd sleep floating, if he could."
>>
>>21181404
"Sleep floating huh? I know who can help with that! But it can wait for now."
>>
>>21181404
"I have a friend who sleeps floating."
>>
>>21181404
"Why, exactly, do you and Vithriel give each other such a hard time?"
>>
"Sleep floating, huh? I know who can help with that! But it can wait for now." You say. "Why, exactly, do you and Vithriel give each other such a hard time?"
"It's been like that ever since we first grew up together." She said, and shrugged. "We hatched within a year of one another."
>>
>>21181540
"Well, you'd think you two would be close, then."
>>
>>21181540

"And it's still like that, even though Vith spends most of his time as a Mother? And here I was thinking absence made the heart grow fonder."
>>
"Well, you'd think you two would be close, then." You say.
"Not precisely." She said. "He's always been aggrivating, and he always thinks it's fun to tease me. It's like we're thirty again every time he shows up. Uriel was less annoying when he hatched."
"I thought Uriel was always kind of a jerk." Kaliel said.
"Oh, yes, he was a jerk." Neiriel said. "But he was still less annoying."
"And it's still like that, even though Vith spends most of his time as a Mother? And here I was thinking absence made the heart grow fonder."
"That's a saying?" Kaliel asked.
"Yeah, it is." Neiriel said. "Every four or five years we do this reunion, and every time he comes by he reminds me how angry he makes me get."
>>
>>21181679
"How many of your crest feathers do you think he has by now?"
>>
>>21181679
"Have you considered just not taking him so seriously?"
>>
>>21181679
"Have you tried not getting angry? Seems like he's just doing it because he enjoys your reactions."
>>
>>21181679
"It's an Arcturan saying Kaliel, I did not know that it is not used around here.
But why do you get so angry about his antics? I'm sure you know as well that this is why he thinks it's so much fun."
>>
<It's an arcturian saying, Kaliel. I didn't know that it isn't used around here.>
<It's a good saying, though.> She said. <It explains our reaction after you came with me on my... adventure to find Mala.>
"How many of your crest feathers do you think he has by now?"
"Just one! The same one! Copies of it!" Neiriel said, almost cried it out. She sighed.
"Have you tried not getting angry? Seems like he's just doing it because he enjoys your reactions."
"I know that's why he does it." She said. "It's easier said than done. Much easier."
>>
>>21181817

"Kal guessed that he keeps picking the same one."
>>
"Maybe Sardriel could help? He could make a pendant or something that calms you down when you activate it..."
"I really don't want anything messing with my emotions. Vith just gets his jollies from making me angry. I'll just... ignore him, and he'll stop, eventually."
"Well, I managed to give him a little taste of his own medicine." You say. "And, well, I could give him another taste. Or dozen."
"No need to stoop to his level." She said. "And he found it funny, of all things."

>>
"It is funny." You say. "How's your egg been, by the way?"
"I had Cassiel ward him.. or her, and they've been safe. Trembling, a bit, which means they could hatch anytime now." She said. She took the small satchel off of her hip, and examined it. You see a rather pleased, calm look on her face as she put it back.
"What if you plainly, evenly stated that you would like him to stop? No anger, just a calm request? The only answers seem to be to play his game and beat him at it, or forfeit the game. Since he seems incapable of being bothered by anything, I don't think he can be beaten."

"I remember when Kaliel was newborn." Neiriel said, giving Kaliel a look. "I could show you if you want... But mostly, just feed them mashed up fruits and insects."
She looked down to the egg again. "I don't think they'll hatch for a few years, at least." She said. "Even though they can..."
She gently pressed the soft pads on her palm against the egg, feeling it.
"But it's about the magic. All about the magic."

"Not exactly." She said. "But essentially, yes. They spend time hiding inside of their egg, as their magical power develops. I could hatch him- or her- now, but... that would cripple them for life, magically."
She sighed, then gave Kaliel another glance.
"You want me to show you when Kaliel was little? Like, really little?"
"... Neiriel..." Kal said, pleading.
Neiriel gave her a grin, put the egg away, and then closed her eyes.
"Yesss." You respond. "I must see!"

Neiriel closed her eyes...

You see a very tiny kalak, her feathers damp and soggy, shivering, and then you see Azariel chuckling as he wraps her up in Azariel's old robe, turning it into a blanket of sorts. Lil' Kali squeaked unhappily as she tried to struggle out of the robe, but Azariel just kept pouring more and more robe around her.
"If I recall." Neiriel said. "I think this was the time she played in the cistern underneath the tower. I think she was... ten at the time? Maybe fifteen?"
"Nooooo." Kaliel responded. The Lil' Kali image squeaked again, in the same *exact* tone of voice, frustrated.

"So cute." You say, laughing. "This is priceless, do you have any more?"
"I do." Neiriel said, as Kaliel tried to struggle out of your embrace, talons pointed toward Neiriel. "But here's my own personal favorite."

The image changed. There was a small, beaked puffball, curled up on an enormous pile of pillows, softly snoozing. Suddenly, the small puffball squeaked loudly and sat up, suddenly, and started tweeting over and over and over in a high pitched voice... and then collapsed again, back to snoozing. There was no delay between 'awake' and 'asleep', she simply collapsed, and curled back into a red puffball.

"It's very... welcoming." She said. "Surprisingly so. It makes you feel safe. Not just the castle, but the actual people are friendly. I did see a bit of tension between an orc and an ogre the other day while I was shopping, but other than that, everything is wonderful."

You mentioned that a magic-rich environment would help the development of Kalak children, I was thinking, maybe we could set up a hatchery in a field of Galadriel's Light to speed up the growth of Kalak children?"
>>
"I'm glad, that's how it's meant to be. We've been working on that... tension, but it probably won't disappear anytime soon." You say. "You mentioned that a magic-rich environment would help the development of Kalak children. I was thinking, maybe we could set up a hatchery in a field of Galadriel's Light to speed up the growth of kalak children?"
"I'm... not so sure." Neiriel said. "Thank you for the offer, but... I'd like my child to be naturally hatched. Perhaps eventually there might be a use for something like that, but not for me."

"Fair enough." You say. "Now, I should take Kal to speak with my father let him tell some stories. After all, fair is fair, no?"
"It is." Neiriel said.
"Ooh, so I get to see little-girl Ishelda?" Kaliel asked, grinning. "I want to see how cute you were."

Can we pull up us sleeping on Grayson on our first night here? We would have been pretty cute, sleeping on a bear.

"Fair warning: I was a lot less fluffy when I was small than you were, so there is probably 98% percent less cute in my father's memories of myself than in Neiriel's. But let's go and find him, so you can see for yourself. If we are lucky, you will even see what Grayson looked like, before he became a bear."
>>
>>21182888
How do we know what we looked like when we were sleeping?
>>
>>21182934
We don't, but I'd assume necromantic sorcery probably could emulate Raz's mirror. I'd guess we'd need a better roll than that though.

"Of course not." She said. "Of course you were adorable."

Together, you and Kaliel make your way into the courtyard, where Marigold is sitting in Kell's lap, talking to your father.
"Ishelda, Kaliel." Marigold said. "Did you two have fun flying?"
"It was more like wrestling, I think." Kaliel said. "Her and Vith, I mean."
"... right." She responded.
>>

"I got one of his crest feathers!"
Show feather.
"I also got Neiriel to show me some memories of Kali when she was little. Father, we were wondering if you could show us some from when I was little? I think you could probably cast if I held your magic together."
>>
>>21182997
"It was great. Vithriel stole one of my feathers but I got him back. Then Neiriel showed me her memories of Kaliel being tiny and adorable."

It was flying, flying-fighting! Flighting!
>>
>>21182997
"Well he wasn't going to give me that feather willingly, so I had to apply some ... persuasion. But that's not why we are here, Neiriel was so kind to show some of her memories of Kaliel's childhood, so I would like to return the favour. Dad, could I ask you to share some of your memories of when I was young with us? Maybe the time I destroyed the tapestry, or tried to find out what it's like to be a knight?"
>>

"Father, we were wondering if you could show us some from when I was little? I think you could probably cast if I held your magic together."
"Well.. I'm not sure if I can, dove." He said, and scratched his chin. "But sorcery does strange things compared to wizardry, I'm told, so we can try it."

He shrugged, and held out his hands. Just as tall as he in your kalak form, you place your hands in his.
"Now, I'm not exactly sure how to do this," He said. "But I suppose we just have to will it."

Median's 53. Two identical numbers doesn't change that particular mathematical function.
>>
Rolled 84

>>21183121
That's silly, obviously he should take the higher number. Because of magic.
>>
>>21183117
>Yeah because of that I'm taking the 78 instead. Screw the median.

Your father closes his eyes, and you feel the magic inside of him yawning for power, reaching for something he can't truly contain. Closing your own eyes, you well up your own power, and give it to him freely. He absorbs the power, soaking it up like a dried sponge, and images flash by.

You see yourself, nearly six years old, running haywire, sneaking up on two of the knights. Carefully, you creep up on the two, and then you breathe inward, closing your eyes. "Bwaaah!" You say, pretending to breathe fire. Sparks of flame shoot from your mouth. You hear Kaliel start giggling as you run.

The image blurs, and when it comes to again, you're creeping up behind Ser Franklin, two years older. Carefully, ever so carefully, you stand tip-toe.. and you can barely reach his shoulders. Frowning, you look to the viewer- to your father no doubt. He crept closer, and lifted you off of your feet, so you could reach the knight's helmet. Snatching it quickly, you place it on your own head, and bolt off.

Ser Franklin turns around.
"Erm, your majesty..." He said, rather confused
"Hm?" Abel asked. "Oh, I didn't see you there, Ser Franklin. Is anything the matter?"
"Ah, well, my helmet..."
"Oh, no worries, I don't mind if you forgot some of your uniform. Just make sure to remember it next time, eh?"
"... Right, your majesty." He said, nodding. Abel struggles not to chuckle.
>>

I am well aware of that, I just think it's funny that the dice would decide that the lowest number should be the same as the median.

"Thanks for not showing anything *too* embarrassing."
"Oh, you want something embarassing?" Your father asked.
"Yes please." Kaliel said.
"As you wish." Your father said.

The next image was of a large ball, adults and nobles dancing. Somewhere, you see a young Marigold, dancing with her father, and there was a small, white cat, drinking from a bowl of what looked like fruit juice.
"Ooh! there's me!" Marigold said.
"And there's a cat..." Kaliel said.

"Y-Your highness, P-Princess Ishelda, may I have this dance?" A rather nervous boy said, dressed up in the finery of a noble.

You, sitting in a corner of the hall, trying not to draw any attention, looked up... And you stared.
The boy stared back.
You stared back at him, your face completely neutral.
He suddenly turned and ran away.
Kaliel and Marigold both started giggling, and your father pulled his hands away.

"Not at the balls." He said. "I made you come to every ball, but you refused to dance, and hid in a corner most of the time."
"And what was with that cat?" Kaliel asked. "Seemed a bit... out of place."
"It turns out that the cat was Grayson." You say. "Weird, I know."
"He used to follow her around." Abel said. "Stood on her shoulder as she did her lessons. Like a sentinel, I suppose. She got obsessed with him when they first met. Started crying out 'fluffy!'. I think she was three at the time."

"I uh, seem to be missing something." Your father said.

"Oh! I almost forgot!" Marigold said, suddenly. "It turns out that my magic is stronger when the sun's out! Kell, give me a hand, will you?" You ask.

The troll nodded the little bulge between his shoulders that served as a head, and he clasped his hands on Marigold's shoulder. She closed her eyes, twisted her hands into the spell for light, and slowly said the word. A small, flickering sphere of light appeared in her palms.

Kaliel started clapping.

Ishelda is so used to kalak facial expressions, and her sorcery grants her proficiency with the form, that when she tries to make human expressions, her form does the kalak version of those same expressions. Grinning and smiling and such is usually indicated by large tufts of feathers on the sides of the beak, while blushing is the tufts of feathers above that. Since most of this is written from Ishelda's perspective, then she feels herself emulating Marigold's grin, despite the way her kalak face does bird-thing expressions.

So Abel and Marigold probably didn't even notice? Aww.

They heard the tone of your voice (Which is perfectly identical to your voice in human form.) They noticed. Hell, even Kell noticed.
