Well. no news is good news, I guess?

The archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike+witches+1989

I also tend to lurk on the SWQ irc. though I don't know if I'm supposed to tell people that. oh well, too late!

++

“This,” you reflect to yourself under your breath “blows.”

You're sitting in your bird, hooked to one of the Sara's bow cats, trying to keep yourself half entertained. You're the alert fighter for the BARCAP for a change, instead of flying the patrol yourself.
It's a welcome shift- you may not even have to launch, though given the current situation, you probably will.

Yesterday's scramble was because of an accident- a Tu-95 pilot breached the Battlegroup's airspace, but very rapidly exited when a pair of 'cats on a CAP locked it up for missiles- along with almost every ship in the group. Since then, the CAG, along with the captain and Admiral Nixon agreed to keep an extra pair of fighters up, as well as keeping your squadron on round-the-clock alert.

Just in case.

Thankfully, this is the last BARCAP the fleet has to mount- you're well inside rage for fighters from pearl to assist, and you can see the islands in the distance- hell, the current BARCAP is supposed to recover at pearl, not on the carrier. As soon as you're off, they'll clear the deck and start making preparations to go into port.

According to what you've been told so far, nothing out of the ordinary has happened in Europe- no massive alert in east Poland, no increased movement, no new flights, nothing. Hell, if anything, it's far quieter than usual. Other than a fairly large soviet naval force off to the south west of Chile, it looks for all the world like the soviet union's military has disappeared. Or, at least, drastically shrunk.

1/2
>>
And that has you bothered. Their air force must be howling mad over the loss of a squadron of jets- not to mention their abject failure to stop Katya's defection. And yet, nothing. Hell, they haven't even put those gigantic supersubs of theirs to sea supposedly- you overheard Admiral Nixon and Captain Blackwell talking about it when the captain came by while Nixon was talking to you as you were getting ready to mount up for this turn on alert.

Your thoughts are interrupted by movement off to your left- Nixon's tomcat lining up on the catapult.

“Change of plans, son,” he says. “We're going to fly the rest of the way to Pearl.”

There's a tone to his voice you're not quite sure you can place... you'd know what it was if it was, say, coming from Slider, but Nixon?

Nahhh.

“Might want to pay attention to your shooter, son.” he says, pointing with one nomex-clad finger.

You've got enough time to look forward and return the salute from your shooter before he activates the catapult- slamming you back in your seat from the acceleration. Laughter follows you up- apparently, the witches saw that.

Nixon joins you moments later, taking the lead position as the witches launch. Before long, you're in a modified pair of loose finger-four formations as Nixon explains the plan.

“Been too long since I really got to have some fun, kids.” he says, and you identify that tone in his voice. It's mirth. The kind of mirth that makes your guts seize up in fear when it comes from most of your squadronmates. The kind of mirth you get when you're planning something that's going to be awesome, but there will be hell to pay about later.

2/3 (oops)
>>
Except, he's CINCPAC. Odds are, he can get away with it.

“It's getting pretty close to December, and that means there's going to be a lot of tourists down at the Arizona museum. Might as well give 'em a bit of an airshow.” He says.

“An... airshow, sir?” Ice asks.

“Yep!” he responds cheerily. “Since it's your squadron, Lieutenant commander, I want you to lead. Take your pair down the port side, your other pair of witches can go starboard. Then Lieutenant Bishop and I will follow. Bishop, I want you to go down the port side right behind the witches, got it?”

BARCAP is Barrier Combat Air Patrol, the fighters that patrol the air around the carrier battlegroup. CINCPAC is Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Command.

To put it simply, Nixon is the guy in charge of all US forces in the Pacific Area.

[x] What about Katya, sir?

“What about Katya, sir?” You ask, grudgingly passing Merlin a 5$ bill around the edge of your ejection seat. The bet was “is Nixon as crazy as we are” and you're pretty sure you just lost.

“Hmm... Miss Katya, do you think you can follow On Lieutenant Bishop's wing?” Nixon asks.

The sly fucker.

“As if I am welded there.” Katya replies.

“Ok kids. We'll be passing bow to stern over the boat, then we'll turn out over the ocean and land at the hickam runways. Remember they share the damn field with the civilian airport- watch for airliners.” He chuckles. “Hate to lose a one of you to running into a fucking jumbo jet. And keep in mind you'll need to pop back up after we overfly the ship- Ewa beach is right there, and civilians tend to get sue-happy with low-altitude supersonic overflights of their houses.”

“Aye, sir” Ice says. If you didn't know any better, you'd swear even SHE was having fun.

It only takes a few seconds to get yourselves sorted- Nixon, you, and Katya drop back and gain a few miles separation- bare moments at speed- as Ice and Slider kick in their burners and rocket away from you, followed right after by Maverick and Goose doing the same.

1/2
>>
Nixon gives you a slow count- a few seconds- then yells “Punch it!”

You respond- ramming your throttles home to the stops. Your cat howls in demonic glee- and kicks you right in the chest as it's jets roar.

And even with that, just like she promised, Katya stays glued to your right wingtip, flying there like you two have been doing this for years.
Nixon wasn't kidding- there's quite a crowd down there. You can almost see their heads tilt up and follow the witches- but it's your midnight black cat that sets the camera flashbulbs off.

Nixon chuclkes. “She still reminds me of my old ship.” he says.

“Which ship, sir?” Merlin asks, her voice totally normal as you execute a brutal roll and climb, letting your hundred plus foot long afterburner plume point straight at the ground.

“The California.” He says, wistfully. “Got my first kill serving on her. Museum up in San Fran, now.”

Your landing is painfully routine, after that- though you're met, after rolling your cat to a halt on the pad, by one very pissed off looking man with rear admiral's insignia on his shirt.

“You!” He roars. As you pop the canopy “What in god's name are you fucking doing? What gave you the bright fucking idea to overfly a fucking museum ship? I'll have your fucking wings for this! Where the fuck is your flight lead?”

[x] He just landed sir.

“My flight lead just landed, sir.” you say, carefully.

“Good!” the rear admiral yells. “I'm going to kick his ass so hard he's going to taste fucking shoe leather! You hotshot fucking fighter pilots are all the same, you know that lieutenant? We don't stand for that kind of shit in the sub fleet. For fucks sake, our witches even have the decency to wear pants and not show their undergarments to a bunch of civilians!”

“Yes, sir.” you respond carefully as the man rants.

“You fuckers are going to lose your wings for this, you read me Lieutenant? I'll have your ass busted down and shipped over to the fucking marines, you get me?” He pauses to take a breath of air as Nixon's cat rolls to a stop next to yours. “Think mud, lieutenant. Think mud and bugs and a bunch of marines all around you, cos that's where you're fucking headed.”

“Yes, sir.” you say again.

“And you!” He points an accusing finger at Nixon. “What the fuck were you thinking? What the fuck is wrong with you dumb aviation fucktards?”

“Well, Jimmy” Nixon says in an almost conversational tone. “That's a hell of a way to greet your commanding officer.”

1/2
>>
The rear admiral turns pale, pale white. “A-Admiral on deck!” he yells, snapping to perfect attention. You follow suit as Nixon walks by, his helmet in one hand and his flight bag in the other. He looks at you.

“Lieutenant Bishop, go get yourself squared away here. Your squadron needs to stay on the base for the time being- ONI wants to come by and chat with Miss Katya. After that we'll sort out the particulars of your medal- and getting that bird of yours and you two back to Boeing so they can pick your brains.” He looks at the rear admiral. “I need to see you in your office, Jimmy. The rest of you, carry on.”

Your temporary lodging is nice enough, if a bit cramped- they've jammed you all into one room, to make it easier for your guards to keep an eye on Katya, at least. Your marine guards.

“Christ.” you gripe, dropping your flight bag on an unclaimed bunk. “We get can't get away from Jarheads, can we?”

“Oh, what, you want to trust the air force base patrol to security?” Slider says, eyeballing Katya, who's moving her kit bag to the rack underneath yours and moving Slider's kit to a different bed entirely.

You shrug. “I'd be a nice change from all this yut yut oohrah devildog crap.”

“Wouldn't it just” Maverick says from across the room. “oh, hey. We're supposed to go down to the Arizona. In our dress kit.”

[x] (I'm accepting the bitch while changing response)

“This is dumb. We were just there!” You grouse, unzipping the top half of your flight suit. “Where the hell am I going to get a set of whites anyway? What? Do they think I crammed mine in my bags?”

Slider eyeballs you. “Too bad you stopped. Anyway, Tricky said he'd be sending some over. And that they weren't yours, don't fucking ruin them.”

“Like I've ever ruined a pair of whites. That was your fucking fault and you know it.”

Katya, who's been sitting on the edge of her rack and following the conversation laughs. “What happened?”

You jerk a thumb at Slider. “She was getting hit on by an Air force major at some fucking function or other. Decided it'd be a good idea to use me as her excuse to get out.”

“What did she do?” Katya asks, her eyes wide.

“Threw a cup of punch on me, then screamed 'sniper!' and tackled me to the ground.”

1/2
>>
“Oh yeahhh!” Slider says, look of comprehension dawning across her face. “I remember that!” she laughs. “Fun times.”

“Yeah, maybe for you!” you grump, grabbing your shaving kit. “I had a pair of docs and a witch frantically looking for a wound they were SURE was there. Then I got blamed when there wasn't one!”

You storm into the unoccupied bathroom and slam the door behind you, hamming it up a bit for your guest.

You shower is long and surprisingly, uninterrupted. You wrap a towel around yourself long enough to grab the garment bag from Merlin, then shower and change into the borrowed whites. They don't fit too badly, though yours are still better.

Slider slips past you and closes the door to the bathroom as you step out. You've got a half hour before she's out of there- she tends to sing in the shower and take her sweet time. You're in a borrowed dress uniform at an unfamiliar base, in a cramped squad bay with the majority of your squadron, plus Katya.

[x] Talk to a witch or witches. Specify about what. (Katya and Merlin were the clear winners)

Merlin's changed into her dress uniform as well- opting to wear the abbreviated skirt that's part of the witch uniform.

“How you holding up, Merlin?” You ask, sitting down on the edge of Katya's bunk. “Pretty hectic these last couple of days, huh?”

Merlin nods. “I...I'm still trying to come to grips with everything.” she laughs nervously. “ I mean, three days ago, everything was normal... well, as normal as it gets, for us... and now we're heroes or something. A..and we've killed people... that's kind of hard to process, I guess.”

“You have it wrong.” Katya says, looking over from where she's standing in front of a mirror, with Ice fussing over the fit of her own borrowed uniform. “You killed people to save me. They would have had no second thought about shooting me down, and they knew I was too tired to defend myself. They had chased me for hours. Hours! Was tired, cold, hungry. About to give up.”

She smiles, faintly. “Then, just as I’d decided to let the ocean end it, there you are.” She's addressing Merlin, but she's looking at you. “Do not feel bad about killing them. Their squadron leader... he had trouble understanding what no meant.”

1/2
>>
“T...trouble understanding what no mea...” Merlin's hesitant question is cut off by Ice.

“Not something you need to worry about, hon.” She says, finally, apparently, content with Katya's uniform.

Katya looks at her. “Is strange. In Russia, we witches are seperated. The reverse of this.” she waves her hands around, indicating the squadron. “Many pilots, one, maybe two witches. After Afghanistan, there is bad blood between the witches and the air force and air defense command. We didn't suffer losses as badly there.”

“So what do you think of it here? Must be a big change” You observe.

Katya nods. “Very. Everybody is nice, but it is very strange. It will take some time to adjust, I think.”

“Everyone is nice till you get on Slider's bad side.” Maverick says from across the room. “She's kind of vicious.”

Which is about when a bar of soap bounces off her head.

“I am not.” Slider says, sweetly. “If I was vicious, I'd have thrown the sink at you.”

“Ya know.” you observe. “At least I got to shower in peace.”

Slider looks at you. “Not my idea. Little miss Russian wouldn't let me in there. Merlin backed her up.” she grins. “And Merlin, well, she's an ace! Gotta respect aces!”

“Knock it off, you two.” Ice says. “Our rides here.”

Your ride is four navy staff cars. Outside of the lead car, Nixon stands, dressed in his blues. He shakes his head when he sees your squadron. “I'd have sent blues for you.” He says. “but it was the best I could do on short notice.”

[x] “What's this about, sir?”

“Yes, Sir.” You say, nodding slightly. “Sir, if I may, what's this all about?”

Nixon grins. “Son, I guess you're going to have to wait to find out.”

Earlier, this wouldn't have bothered you. Earlier, you'd have thought of Nixon as being an upstanding model of American military leadership.

Earlier was before you saw him threatening to sodomize a ground crew with a sledgehammer if they didn't get his bird back into the air. Earlier was before he led you on a mach 2+ low-level overflight of a museum ship full of civilians.

Earlier was before you knew he was just as insane as the rest of the people you're involved with on a day-to-day basis. It's kind of comforting to know things never change.

The ride over is quiet- you make more small talk with Merlin, while Katya rides with Nixon and an ONI commander. Merlin's excited to be going back to Seattle, though she expresses worry the rest of the squadron will be re-assigned.

You're not sure yourself.

At the ship, there's a small crowd of reporters- both film and print- and a small group of.. oh, oh shit.

Shit shit SHIT. Those are Secret service bastards.

Inwardly, you steel yourself. Those are secret service- and there's probably a dozen plainclothes guys for every one in the suit. That means, at least, it's a VIP.

Worst case, it's the president. That's the absolute worst case. But you doubt it- ONI's not really had a chance to talk to Katya yet, so they wouldn't let her get that close to the president, would they?

...would they?

As the door opens, you can't help but think how you'd rather be in the air, right now.

As you walk up the back of a small stage, set up, apparently, for the December 7th memorial- you can't help but think you'd give anything to be in the air, anywhere, right now. Over Moscow, say. In a SPAD. That'd work.

Thankfully, your gods are looking out for you. The Gentleman on the stage isn't the president. Or even the VP. It's one of the state's senators.

… which, on reflection, is probably worse, since they're always gunning for a better job. And right now, you're a political goldmine.

However, this guy was military. 442nd- a very famous unit, involved in a lot of the fighting in Europe, back in the war.

He's also a purple heart winner. Not that he's wearing it, but the missing right arm is a dead enough giveaway. You're pretty sure he's got a few more medals to his name- a Congressional Medal of Honor, for one, but you aren't sure about it.

You're directed to a seat right of the podium- right in between Katya and Ice. You're not even there long enough to get uncomfortable before you're directed to stand.

Normally, promotions aren't a difficult thing.

Normally, though, promotions aren't this... public. The applause is pretty astonishing.

Of course, this isn't an election year- thank god- but the associated speech is long, and boring. It's pretty obvious, at this point, you're here to look good- first public appearance counts for a lot.

It's with some surprise, then, that Nixon motions you off the stage in the middle of the speech.

[x] Here we go again, sir?

“Here we go again, sir?” you wryly note as you drop off the back of the stage.

Nixon looks shaken. “Change of plans, son. You're headed to Seattle without your bird. Boeing wants you there for some last second input on their second prototype cat. Take your RIO, you can take one of the other ones to act as a wingmate if you need to, but your squadron will be meeting you at your staging area.”

“Staging point, sir?” You ask, confused.

“Eastern Europe just blew wide open, along with the Middle east and the pacific. We just lost two attack subs to one of those fucking supersubs of the reds, and they've got that flying aircraft carrier all over the place over the sea of japan. Everyone's calling for support, and we're scrambling to provide it.” He pauses.

“It isn't because of us, son. But they've been waiting for years for an excuse. I guess this is it. World war three, son.”

the enormity of that statement is almost too big for you to grasp. It's only when Nixon shakes his head that you really, truly get it.

“I need you in the field, son. Two day turnaround, no more. Set up at Misawa- we've already got a Seabee battalion there to rebuild that base, they'll have at least one runway up by tomorrow. Best get to it, son. The war isn't going to wait.”

Katya, Ice, or Slider, not in that order.

(I'm more shocked by the rapid change from wacky TOP GUN to WW3 nuclear launch detected oh god we are fucked, its the end of days than anything.)
>>
>>21188065
Huh.
I may have to watch some Strike Witches, that idea appeals to me.

Thanks, anon.
>>
>>21188031
Actually, you've got the sequence of events wrong: the Russians planned to use nukes and gas from the opening shots of the war. Their reasoning was that since the conflict is guaranteed to go nuclear anyway, they might as well be the first to call upon Oppenheimer's Light and start doing counter-force strikes.
>>
>>21188107
The show's awful. The quests are fantastic.
>>
>>21188098
Have you never read Red Storm Rising? Never played World in Conflict? Those are two major productions where a NATO-Warsaw Pact WW3 kicks off and doesn't go nuclear.

It's not a foreign concept, and it's a work a fiction. Chill out.
>>
>>21188107
I wouldn't. Really.

The show treats the male pilots with the same respect you would the tissue you just finished blowing a load into.
>>
>>21188098
The existence of witches probably makes ICBMs a fuckton less useful. All they have to do is put a shield in the way before the MIRVs separate and now instead of a bunch of nuclear bombs you've got a bunch of subcritical chunks of plutonium raining down on you; still not great, but infinitely better than the alternative.
>>
>>21188128
>Red Storm Rising
That reminds me: I need to reread that once I finish Debt of Honor & Executive Orders.
>>
>>21188149
Witches are Space capable now eh?
>>
>>21188121

No, they didn't.

The soviets always had massive conventional superiority up until the very end of the cold war (and given that this is a different universe and they didn't have a period of stagnation + collapse, they may very will still be on par).
>>
>>21188107
>watch some Strike Witches
Um. The show is 90% pantyshots or boobshots, 5% cute girls doing cute things, and 5% hotblooded alium slaughter.
If you go in expecting 'am I kawaii uguu' you'll have a blast. If you go in expecting ALIEN INVASION SERIOUS BUSINESS, you will want to kill yourself by the end of the second episode.
>>
>>21188149
They are also sort of removed from the general political structure of nations and do their own secret witchy things, so presumably they'd be using all of their influence to prevent or minimize nuclear weapons development, deployment, and use.
>>
>>21188121
This is what I was assuming, since US stragety as soon as the Reds would rush was to use all the nukes in the shared programs kept in Western Europe to destroy the tanks (which eventually lead to the Apache's development, to take on these alongside nuclear strikes).
>>21188128
tom clancy as much as i love games based on his properties has his hack moments (Red Storm Rising assumes people are much more rational than they are for one thing)
>>
>>21188194
You realize that the nuclear option came down to one Colonel in Cuba, and he decided not to use it, right?
>>
>>21188212
Yep, again, we have gotten lucky way too many times (Muv Luv/Ringworld fans might get this, the universe we are in is the one which has produced the highest possibility of good luck/great outcomes).

>>21188189
oh god i had a horrible thought, what about all those bioweapons/chemical weapons under store.
>>
>>21188194
Again, it's a work of fiction. It's not supposed to be a 100% accurate representation. Creative liberties are being taken to make it a better story. Chill.
>>
Here, watch this and this and take note that there was a considerable amount of conventional back + forth before the nukes came out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2B7sdLPMfc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MCbTvoNrAg

Both sides will probably try very hard to avoid a global thermonuclear war, but that is the inevitable conclusion if one side gets pushed too hard.
>>
>>21188107
No.
Don't.
Please don't.

If you're expecting dogfighting and ace and piloting and whatnot, you'll be disappointed.

If you're expecting moemoekawaiidesu ugu~u, go for it. It's borderline softcore porn.
>>
>>21188194
>Red Storm Rising
>Rational

The Russians start a giant conventional war with NATO because of a terrorist attack on a single oil refinery, by staging a terrorist attack on the Kremlin. They then want to go tactical nuclear to make the war last longer rather than admit they fucked up.
>>
>>21188256
I mean the fact that someone didn't just say FUCK IT LAUNCH MISSILES in the chaos of the conventional war (Although, for humor value Red Storm Rising was used as the core plot for HAWX2, its weird as hell)
>>
That reminds me of a story I heard about a Russian radar operator that detected a single nuke inbound and reported it as a malfunction, because he figured that if the Americans were going to fire their nukes they would use a lot more than just one.

No, that guy wasn't lazy, he was a goddamned hero. He lost his career over it, and he was the only thing that saved us from WWIII

Take Katya, if only to stave off any potential abandonment issues.

Also, we could use a brushup on Soviet aerial tactics. She's on our side now, so she'd better start helping us.

We really can't take Ice; she's the squadron commander.

The soviets have a lot of really nasty AAA + SAMs, which will probably be at least as much of a danger as any of their aircraft.
>>
So what are the odds that Katya is a spy?
>>
>>21188458
More significant that we are willing to admit.
>>
>>21188487
than, even
>>
>>21188016
Katya. Ice is too important, Slider too crazy, and Maverick and Goose are inseparable. She's the odd man out, and the only real option.

>>21188016
Katya.
>>
>>21188016
Katya she strokes our hero complex.
>>
>>21188458
She's way too convenient waifu material and is therefore /tg/ quest protagonist kryptonite.

So yes, she probably is.

Doesn't bother me though.

ehhhh wasting a witch with her level of combat endurance as a fake defector would be criminal. that and what actually purpose does she serve if she is being sent to the USA literally the day before the Russkies kick off WW3. Even under normal circumstances she would be simply pumped for information and then given a new Identity and shuffled off somewhere so the GRU/KGB whoever doesn't send assasins after her. its a lose lose situation for the Soviets.
>>
>>21188996
>>21188458
It'd be like sending Eric Hartmann over to the Soviet Union as a fake defector before Barbarossa. Sure, you might get SOME kind of intel, but you're sidelining an important pilot for very little gain.

Okay, let's look this over. Hawaii isn't a nuclear wasteland. This implies that
a) Red doesn't consider Pearl to be a good enough stPFFFT I CAN'T EVEN FINISH THAT OH GOD
b) Red wants to commandeer it at some point (retarded for several reasons)
c) Nukes ain't a thing.
d) Something I haven't thought of.
I'm going with C, because in SWQ, the simultaneous strike hilariously killed the instigating elements of WW2 and screwed over the warhawk faction of the IJA. As such, America never needed to focus on an entrenched, tenacious Japan (an ally of theirs), and the atom bomb would be unnecessary. This is doubly so, because it's unlikely that the squiddies have an entrenchment that would require the persuasion of many kilotons to erase. Third, lol magic, on both women's active sides and men's passive sides. Lots of research potential that would distract from the exploration of e=mc^2.

Come to think of it, that kind of precludes the idea that the SW war is called World War 2, so WW3 is kind of a stetch...
>>
>>21189279

I'm voting for D) They haven't launched their strategic nukes yet.

or after we nuked the shit out of the Martians we banned their use against non extraterrestrial targets. Hmmm thats a thought, what is space tech like now since Humanity presumably brought the fight to the Red Planet to eliminate any martian resistance.

I'm pretty curious what europe looks like. We have an east and west poland, is that basically divided ala Molotov-Ribbentrop? Did the south-eastern european states (Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Yugoslavia) go communist as they did in reality?

Basically, I'm wondering where the iron curtain fell, and what the disposition of forces is.
