>You are Jack Tallent, son of Corellia, graduate of the Imperial Naval Academy on Carida, and Captain of the Carrack-class cruiser Compellor.

The world of Venezia III was a particularly ugly dustball. The yellow desert planet was covered in rust colored splotches, making it look like it had a virulent rash. It was just as well that you can't see it while hiding out in the dark side of the planet's moon, waiting for your prey. The moon in all it's grayish white austerity was still more photogenic than the planet around which it orbited. Glancing around the Compellor's bridge, you watch the bridgecrew go about their tasksfor a few minutes before closing your eyes. Focusing on your other senses, you feel the vibrations of the ship's engines thrumming up through your feet, and the feel of cool air as it blows against you, the small horde of purifiers having long since robbed it of any scent. Opening your eyes again, the first thing you notice out the transparisteel window is the other half of your patrol group, the Strike-class cruiser Implicator. Looking at your bridge again, you see your two pilots a pair of young men who both have brown hair and look enough alike that they might be related, carefully maintaining Compellor's position relative to the Implicator. Your two gunnery officers, one a tall man with blond hair, the other somewhat shorter and with his head shaved, are having a quiet conversation. The shield officer is a medium sized man standing by at his station, while the skinny scanner officer closely monitoring the ship's sensors. Finally, your executive officer is a big black man standing a few feet to your right.
>Do you...
>...speak to a member of the bridgecrew?
>...sit in the Captain's chair and review the information for your current mission?
>...do something else?
>>
>Carrack-class cruiser
We really need to do something about the silly 30 meter high windows on the front of the ship.
>>
>>21186111
Listen in on the conversation between the gunnery officers, to get a feel for them. If it's nothing interesting, ask our executive officer for a status report.

All human crew. Excellent.
>>
>>21186111
>sit in the Captain's chair and review the information for your current mission
Gotta know our mission before we can give out informed orders.
>>
Review the current mission
>>
I assume we've already been briefing on our mission, but we should check it again as soon as is convenient. We are a Captain in the Imperial Navy, might as well make sure we get things absolutely right.
>>
>>21186111
Review the mission, best to know what we're doing before anything else.
>>
Review information for now, so we know what to ask the crew members.
>>
Twirl our mustache. We have to practice if we're ever going to be a high ranking Imperial officer.

(Should we start rolling 1d100 in email for decisions? You roll by typing dice+1d100 into the email field, in case anyone doesn't know.)
>>
>>21186295
I would prefer that we just do the consensus thing. that way a high roll doesn't do anything suicidal.
>>
Another vote for reviewing the mission
>>
I'm super-duper excited and shit.

>review the mission

>>21186336

I do suggest rolls for some actions though. One quester's system I quite liked:

He would take the first three rolls. He would take the median roll to see if it was a success or not. The other two rolls, if either were exceedingly high or low, could confirm the degree of success. I recommend trying that. But ultimately you're in charge, this is just a suggestion.

We may be captain of this vessel but shouldn't be ranked commander. captain rank is more suitable for a commander of a cruiser or dreadnought.
>>
>...sit in the captain's chair and review information for your current mission.

Sitting in your captain's chair, you pull up the mission information on a small screen to review. You are in the Venezia system, on the second leg of your patrol. It seems that Venezia III has recently had an outbreak of particularly daring pirates. These pirates have been particularly daring, hitting currency exchanges and strafing the planetary governor's personal yacht. They've also been careless. Every run to the planet's surface has gone through the same route for the past week. Your patrol group is going to get the jump on them this time.

Pirate force is expected to consist of two freighters and a half dozen Z-95 Headhunters.

>Now what?
>>
>>21186570
Note to self: don't walk off in the middle of the post. It makes you look retarded.
>>
>>21186570
Get to know the bridgecrew, then look over the local 'charts' for any hazards.

What kind of crew complement do we have?
>>
Alright, can we review our assets? What is our TIE compliment, stormtroopers onboard, etc. Also, are we the ranking commander of the patrol or no?
>>
>>21186570
How much information do we have on the freighters? How fast are they? How heavily armed and armored?
>>
>>21186665

I seriously doubt we would know that without getting a sensor reading on the enemy ships themselves.
>>
>>21186708
They strafed the governor's personal yacht. I'd consider it very unusual for no one to have gotten a proper sensor image of the freighters.
>>
>>21186640
>>21186650

Your crew complement is 1,092 including TIE pilots, and another 142 ground troops. The ranking officer of the patrol commands the much larger strike-class cruiser.

>>21186665
The planetary government has not managed to identify them and had no sensor readings to turn over to you.

>>21186730
The Headhunters strafed the yacht, not the freighters.
>>
>>21186650
You have five TIE/Ln's.
>>

>>
I agree with dossiers.

On another note, is our patrol already in position to intercept or do we need to get the ball rolling on that?

We're Corellian. Our background's going to be whatever we damn well please.

(I say we were a TIE pilot reject- reflexes just weren't quite good enough to fly one of those deathtraps or we weren't suicidal enough to transfer there.)

Hmm...so we've got the anti-starfighter variant.

>>
Uh, OP, you might want to go a bit faster. It's hard to keep a consistent audience at this kinda pace.
>>
You tap a few more buttons to bring up abbreviated service records for your bridge crew. It turns out that your pilots actually are related. Helmsmans second class Lonnie and Ronnie Saunders are twins and just barely twenty.they are also on their first cruise. The blond haired man is a twenty-four year old Gunnery Sergeant named Peter Hanford, and his counterpart is Senior Gunnery Sergeant Reckar Stahl. They are on their fourth and fifth eight cruises, respectively, and Stahl has seen a great deal of action. The shield officer is Ensign Charles Backley, on his first cruise. Your scanning officer is Ensign Junior Grade Foresh Handfol, also on his first cruise. Finally, your XO is Lieutenant Vlidok Garnow, on his third cruise and having been passed over for command of this vessel in favor of you.

>>Who do you want to talk to?

>>21186962
This is your first cruise aboard the Compellor.

>>21186824
Already in position.

Again, I apologize for how long this takes. It should speed up the later we go.
>>
>>21187181
I know. I'm trying but my fiance is ill, and I keep having to do stuff for her.
>>
>>21187217
Ah well that's fair.
>>
>>21187206
Would it be better to have our TIE's already launched and ready, or would that only make our sensor signature bigger and spoil the ambush?
>>
>>21187319
You could very easily hide your TIEs in your sensor shadow.
>>
>>21187376
Launch them.
>>
>>21187206
Might as well talk to the XO. We definitely shouldn't interrupt the scan officer.
>>
>>21187376
Ask our XO's opinion on launching TIE fighters now, rather than later.
He sounds like he's got more experience than us.
>>
Bump for the OP. If I may make a suggestion? Compile all the data here, like the troop compliment, the officer dossiers, the mission, etc.

Wait a few days until the fiance is well and/or you won't have many distractions, and start it up again with the ambush. Start with that info, spaced over half an hour to let people see the thread, then give it a go. I think you'll be pretty successful then.

I'm really excited for the thread, but I think you'd be better off waiting for a more opportune time.
>>
You signal your XO to grab his attention. "Whatdo you think of launching fighters and having them follow in our wake."

Lieutenant Garnow stares at you for a moment before flatly saying "You're the Captain."

"Fine. Then the captain says to launch fighters and have them follow in our wake," Garnow turns to carry out your order. As he does so, you notice that the exchange did not go unnoticed by the rest of the bridge.
>Your fighters will launch shortly, what do you do now? Or will you wait to spring the trap?
>>
Glad to see we have a grumpy, antagonistic first mate. I like it.
>>
>>21187617
Make a mental note to have a personal chat with the XO afterwards.

Otherwise, I can't think of anything pressing to do.
>>
...I have a bad feeling about this.

Now that we have that line out of the way, tell the TIE fighters to prepare to accelerate out from our shadow and pen in the fighters on our signal. Make sure they understand you won't be shedding many tears if the Headhunters are vaped, but disabled is better.

Tell the helmsmen to be ready to give chase the second they get their own signal.
>>
Who is in command of the Implicator?
>>
>>21187727
Captain Derrick Morgan. Rumor has it, that he's next in line for an ISD posting.
>>
>>21187617
We'll need to talk with him afterwards. He's got a right to be pissy, putting in 3 years on this ship and getting passed over for an officer straight out of the Academy.
But on the Bridge is NOT where those feelings belong.

Also, seconding this >>21187696
>>
"Lieutenant, tell the TIE fighters to prepare to accelerate out from our shadow and pen in the fighters on our signal. If they think they can manage it without taking unnecessary risks, I want to take at least one Headhunter alive." As the XO moved to carry out your order you raise your voice to address the pilots, "Misters Saunders, be prepared to chase down either of those freighters." They grin in response.

The two cruisers arrive at the appointed position and settle in to wait. After nearly an hour, Ensign Handfol calls out "Ships exiting hyperspace! They're transponders declare them to be the Lustful and Unexpected." You catch him frowning at the screen as though personally disapproving of the names. You see the Implicator begin to move off and order the Compellor to follow suit. "Misters Saunders, maintain our relative position. Lieutenant Garnow, make sure those TIEs stay hidden."
>>
As the cruisers moved to close with the freighters, Ensign Handfol says "One bulk freighter is unidentifiable, probably some sort of amalgamation. The other is a YV-929. It might be able to hurt us. No sign of the Headhunters."

>Wat do?
>>
>>21188009

Take a wide wheel towards them, while presenting the broadside to them. Have the TIEs do a loop, in their elements. Target them with our ship's weapons. Send them a transmission to lower their shields and prepare to be inspected, or they will be destroyed. (WE ARE THE FUCKING EMPIRE. WE CAN DESTROY WHOEVER WE WANT. STARTING WITH THE XO)
>>
>>21188009
Have Handfol keep an eye for those Headhunters, they're probably behind us or in the sensor shadows of the freighters, like we're doing.

Have the Implicator take lead, and we'll target the YV-929.

>>21188042
What are you doing? The Implicator is taking the lead in this, not us!
>>
>>21188072
How are the craven supposed to make Admiral? Not every fleet has Vader waiting around for people to fail.
>>
Have the Gunnery Sergeants supply the onboard weaponry energy priority, followed by engines, then the shielding officer finally get his. Have the fighters continue to follow, tell them to engage as soon as shots are fired.

Follow the Implicator in, but be sure to present broadside at all times.

Basically, play it safe, but get ready to buttfuck them.
>>
As the two imperial ships continued to close, you say "Lieutenant, guns have energy priority, followed by engines, then shields."

"The pirates are ignoring the Implicator's hails." says Ensign Handfol, "Wait now the bulk freighter is rolling and the YV-929 is changing heading. It's turning toward us!"

"Us as in the patrol, or us as in the Compellor?" you ask.

"Us as in the Compellor. The Implicator is moving towards the Lustful. Unexpected is approaching fast."

>Okay, captain, what do you do now?
>>
Personally, I say we fire first. Full broadside, fire for effect, focus on the engines. The effect being we either disable them or they hail us for their surrender.

Fuck 'em, we're the Empire, we ain't gonna take no shit from anyone. Screw the whole, "rules of engagement" jazz.
>>
>>21188199
Target the Unexpected and fire a full broadside once they're in range. TIE fighters to engage after our first volley. And any sign of those Headhunters?
>>
"Go to battlestations! Bring us hard to Starboard and bring weapons to bear on the Unexpected. Where are those Headhunters?"

"Found them!" calls out Handfol. "They're launching from the Lustful!"

Unpreturbed by your maneuvering, the Unexpected opens fire from well beyond the effective range of it's energy weapons. Light turbolaser, ion cannon and laserfire streams your way, ineffectually washing your shields in a ruby and azure glow. It's actually rather pretty, until Handfol calls out again. "Unexpected is launching missiles! Four...Twelve...Twenty! Twenty concussion missiles inbound!"

>Your move
>>
>>21188374
Can TIE fighters intercept concussion missiles? I've never played the TIE Fighter games, so I don't know.
>>
This is why we put the priority on weapons.

Continue to close to effective range with the Unexpected. Unleash Turbolaser broadside as soon as able. Target: Bridge. Continue to fire for effect.

As soon as the missiles are in range of our laser batteries, use them to target and destroy them.

Have the TIE's engage the Headhunters and preferably stay out of range of the larger ships.

That should just about do it for now. Now it's up to the crew.
>>
>>21188485
We'll also want the tractor beams used to slow down the missiles so that they're easier to hit with the lasers.
>>
>>21188606

Can tractor beams target something that small?
>>
"Guns, target their bridge with the turbolasers. I want that freighter dead! Lasers are to intercept the missiles. Lieutenant, release the TIEs to go after the Headhunters." The TIEs quickly heel over and speed toward the Headhunters while the Implicator hammered the Lustful. Torrents of energy slammed against the bulk freighter's shields, buckling them almost instantly and quickly turning the Lustful into a floating charnelhouse. As the Unexpected came into range, it dumped another volley of missiles before the Compellor struck back hard. The concentrated heavy turbolaserfire collapsed the freighter's forward shield and burst the transparisteel window on the bridge. The shots kept coming, melting their way through the ship, before coring through the Unexpected's powerplant and blowing out the aft end of the craft, leaving it to drift, dead.

In retrospect, the Unexpected's strategy may not have been so dumb. While on the one hand, it had been to far away to hav a chance of penetrating the Compellor's shields. On the other hand, with that much energy that close to the sensors for that long mean the forty incoming concussion missiles were difficult to detect. While Stahl's gunnery crews had demonstrated the kind of pinpoint accuracy that was laudable in the Imperial Navy, Hanford's gunnery crews proved to be...rather less adept. As the first wave of missiles hit, the Compellor's shields held at first, then failed with a couple of late arrivals hitting the surface of the ship. You watch in a sort of dull horror as the next wave of missiles approaches so very, very fast. "How long until we can get shields back?" you ask.

"Maybe ninety seconds." Said Ensign Backley a bit shrilly.

"ETA on the second wave of missiles?"

"Maybe forty seconds!" yelled Handfol.

"Helm, give me a starbord roll, right now!" You will get hammered by this, but you might yet keep the bridge intact. Punching the intercom on your chair, you say "Attention, this is the captain speaking. All hands brace for impact." Then the missiles hit.

The impacts first throw you from your seat, then bounce you around the bridge. A cacophony of the worst sort fills your ears, then you hear nothing but ringing. Eventually, everything stops and you can begin to move your bruised and battered body. You hurt. A lot. You taste blood in your mouth and see some on the floor and smell something burning, or maybe smoke. You notice that the emergency lighting has been activated, meaning there's not a lot of power left. Your bridge crew is strewn about the place, and to your horror, you hear a growing hissing sound emanating from the cracked transparisteel window.

Have engineering make sure the reactors are stable.

Hail the Implicator and inform her that we need emergency assistance.

Get the fuck out of the bridge. But do all that other shit first. We have a job to do, damn it.

We killed the freighter anyways, we should have some time before the ship is in danger again.
>>
>>21189302

"Hey!" you yell, "Everybody get up! The bridge is going to vent!" You go to check a nearby screen and discover it's blank. In fact, all the screens are blank. Stahl is starting to heave himself to his feet and either Lonnie or Ronnie is having trouble pulling either Ronnie or Lonnie away from the window. At least, you think so It's hard to tell when they're suddenly quadruplets. Hanford appears to be dead; it looks like his screen blew up in his face. Worse luck, your XO is alive and half carrying Handfol from the bridge.

You want us to be a real evil bastard, don't you?

Help the twins out of there, FAST. I'll roll if you think it's necessary. As soon as we get them to safety, seal the bridge behind us. Fuck Hanford. Dead or not, he's going to get a death sentence from his role in this disaster anyway. This way is less paperwork.

As soon as the remaining bridge crew is safe, find a working intercom and find a way to contact the Implicator. Let them know our bridge is out and that we require immediate assistance. Furthermore, attempt to check on the status of our fighters. Perhaps tell them to dock at the Implicator if there is room.

Last, contact engineering again and determine that we are stable and that Life Support systems are functioning properly.
>>

>>
You stumble and weave your way over to the twins and help the one get the other out of there. Your XO gets Handfol out and Stahl staggers out under his own power. You have to manually shut the bridge hatch and dog it shut, cutting off the frightening hiss. Reaching for the nearby intercom, you are pleasantly surprised to discover that it works. "Captain Tallent to Engineering, where do we stand?"

The voice that comes back is a little breathless, which you can definitely sympathize with. "Not so good. Life support will probably make it until we have power again, but we don't have very much else."

"Comms?"

"Only internal, we must have lost our transmitter/receiver." You sag against the airtight hatch and try to collect your thoughts. Then you jerk back as the door suddenly gets ice cold.

"Lieutenant, please escort the Misters Saunders and Ensign Handfolto the infirmary. Sergeant Stahl and I will be in the auxillery bridge." Hitting the intercom again, you say "Engineering, get me engines back first, priority one. I'd rather not slam into the lunar surface or do an uncontrolled burn into the planet's atmosphere." As you start walking toward the auxilery bridge, you try to plan your next move.

>what IS your next move?
>>
>>21189579
Our next move is to do whatever we can to establish contact with our sister ship.

I suggest we get an engineer in a vac suit to stand out on the hull and signal one of our TIEs with the suit com, if that's possible. I'd guess that the TIEs would be a lot closer to us than the Implicator.
>>
>>21189608

>>
GM went to bed
>>
Arriving in the cramped auxillery bridge, you find that most of the screens are still blank. The ones that aren't are not promising. You don't have engines yet, but you do have stationkeeping thrusters. Unfortunately, you don't have sensors or windows, so you might just end up steering your way to your doom. Now that you think about it though, you still have gravity. considering the rather violent lateral roll you had ordered right before those missiles hit, maybe you should be grateful for small mercies. In the meantime, you set Stahl to flip the running lights on and off in code. You have no idea if you even have running lights anymore, or if you do, whether or not they work, but it can't hurt. Then you settle in to wait, and wait you do, until eventually, you feel a shudder that tells you your cruiser has been tractored.
>>I think that's where I'll end it for tonight. So, honest opinions, how hackneyed and terrible is my quest? Any comments or issues? Should I just drop the thing, or continue in the future?

Good, but I suggest running it while not having to care for a sick loved one, just because it's hard to get much done at this speed.

This was a good start. I hope you continue it. If you don't, though, at least tell us that you're going to drop it. Far too many authors just disappear.

I guess I don't have any real complaints. It did strike me as odd that we didn't have a single conversation with the captain of the Implicator. I assume that, despite our ranks being the same, he is functionally in charge of the patrol group, since he commands a heavier ship with many more TIEs.

If people still want to play, I won't drop it. quest hours may be odd, though, as I typically work nights.

What makes you think the Implicator is configured as a starfighter carrier?

Meant to post this image earlier. It's the YV-929.

If somebody would be so kind as to archive this, I'll pick up next time with your rescue by the Implicator. Sunday at the earliest, but more likely to be Monday. In the afternoon/early evening on whichever one.

The Strike-class has an internal hangar bay, while the Carrack doesn't. Even if the Implicator isn't configured as a starfighter carrier, I'd bet that it still carries more than five TIEs.

If it carries no TIEs, it's still a more massive vessel.

I disappeared once... like, 70 pages into... Blackguard Quest!

I recommend switching POV now and again to different cast members. It's fun when Street Fighter Quest does it.
>>
>>21189919
Lost Future Quest does that too. I don't think it would work well for this quest, though.

Who will archive this? I would do it but I do not know how.

It's archived. The request form has all the instructions you need, anyhow.
