90 KB
You are Sir Daniel, an old hero long dead, or were, until Erik the Lich resurrected you to be his helper.

Fortunately, Erik is the laziest man you've ever known, and only wants to read erotica. But you're a good servant, and want to help your master by clearing the ladder to the top.

Last time you, Mark, and your apprentices found Adrian's home city of Sileo, and went to find him.

You found Adrian in his family's villa overlooking a vast expanse of fields.

Adrian greeted you just as you'd expected, by shouting in horror and defiance.

But it wasn't enough to halt you from entering his house.

Once inside Adrian's mother, Ubera, greeted you and told you to make yourself comfortable.

You made small talk for a while until you left to help Ubera make dinner, she shed some light onto Adrian's past.

After assuming your champion form to be polite at dinner, you ate well joined everyone in the lounge, where Mark and you told stories, unfortunately, your stories end up a bit bleak.

Adrian joined you outside and you had a little chat, and gained a new understanding on why exactly he didn't like you.

You spent the night alone, reading.

You are standing in the front garden, with Mark and your lads.

What do you do?
>>
>>21209759
Ask Mark if he wants to help train with the apprentices.

>"I'll help in whatever way I can, but I've sparred with them before, and one of them beat me. So there's not too much I can do."

You feel a spark of pride, one of your lads has trumped Mark in a fight.

What do you do?
>>
>>21209801
That sounds promising.
Well, might as well see how the last frenemy is doing.
>>
>>21209801
"Good lads. Want to come with me to go see Clarice? I haven't seen her in 3 years. I wonder what's changed."
>>
>>21209832
"So, where's Clarice?"

>"Why do you want to see her? She's not like me, or Adrian, who had ideological reasons for disliking you at the start. You traumatized the girl."
Mark doesn't seem to want to bring you to Clarice.

>"So he can apologize, fuck, Mark, just think."
Adrian actually has your back for once.

Mark takes a moment to let those neurons fire.

>"Ah, right, makes sense..."

Adrian shakes his head. Then tells you to follow him, he'll take you to the masters of the earth.

You ask who these masters are.

>"A bunch of old farts who like to think about this life far too much. The only reason we haven't gotten rid of them is because they're pretty powerful."

So Clarice wants power, eh?

You, your lads, and your frenemies return to the city's market square.

>"To find the old buggers, just follow the old road. I can't go with you, rules and laws about a young elf in an old man's house. But as outsiders looking for wisdom for your painfully short lives, it's fine."

Adrian leaves you in the city as he returns for home.

Sure enough, you see the old road. A dirt trail with the odd brick or stone that once was a well formed way, now eroded and in a state of disrepair.

What do you do?
>>
>>21209906
"But I don't have a painfully short life.

So do you know anything about what Clarice has been doing during the past three years, aside from accruing magical power?"

Head down the dirt road.
>>
>>21209906

What kind of a question is that?
Take up the old road! Let's go and ask these old farts a few questions, while at it.

I bet they maintain it to look old.
>>
>>21209943
>"Yes you did, you died. But you didn't remain dead, like a good chap."
Mark bestows his own brand of wisdom.

>"Last I heard from Clarice was she decided to learn some greater magics, for inner peace or something. I knew a man who wanted inner peace, once, he'd ignite this strange herb and laugh all night long. Apart from magics? Not a clue, she was very private on that part, even after we killed the men who enslaved her."

You continue down the old road, soon you can feel eyes looking on you.

>"Uh, sir, I've got this odd feeling..."

"That's your murder sense, Steve. It's tickling, right? Someone is watching us. We'll let them make their move, pretend you don't know."

Even after you arrive at the house of learning, no one has attacked you.

Of course, there's a little old elf standing infront of the main door in an old robe. It wouldn't be right without him.

>"We've been expecting you."

"Yeah, we know."

The man laughs and walks to the doors. If you guessed it, you'd be correct. The doors are also in a state of disrepair.

The man pushed them open with a grunt and ushers you inside.

The inside, however, is immaculate. Every surface is polished stone, a sheen like a film of water is covering everything.

What do you do?
>>
>>21210006
"Lovely place you have here. I am here to visit Clarice. Would you mind giving me directions?"
>>
>>21210078
>"We thank you for the compliment, but Clarice can not be disturbed right now, she's in the sensory deprivation chamber."

Clarice is busy at the moment, but she should be out soon. You can't spend a long time in a sensory deprivation chamber."

>"You and your friends must be weary, feel free to explore the grounds. If a door is open, you are welcome. I would suggest that you try to hot springs, they are great for relaxing and soothing aching muscles."

Oh yeah, great for everyone but you.

Mark and your lads seem adamant to try out these hot springs.

What do you do?
>>
>>21210122
Send the guys to hot springs if they really need it. Wait somewhere near the sensory deprivation chamber, but not so that we'll be making Terminator 2 trauma scare to Clarice.
>>
>>21210122
Let them, then start asking about what exactly do they do.
>>
"Fine, whatever, go."
The four of them quickly walk off to the springs.

>"Are you not joining your friends?"

"The experience would be wasted on me, I feel."

"Tell me, what exactly do you do here?"

>"We search for enlightenment through contemplation."

"You all sit around, telling eachother how smart you are, because you think too much into things?"

>"Pretty much, yes."

The man laughs and begins walking, you follow him.

>"What is you want from Clarice? When she came here she was an emotional wreck, jumping from one extreme to the other in the bat of an eye."

What do you do?

Remove helmet, show skull.

>>21210209

Just to say sorry and all that? I don't think the idea was to leave her wrecked for 3 years. And if the reason was our blinks then god damn.
>>
>>21210209
Don't show the skull, don't.
No.
Because if we wink or the sort these people might break too.
Or maybe not.

Just no. No.

Go see what else they do, and how do they exactly keep it so tidy in here?

"I came to apologize to her. To make amends. I may not be the entire reason she is so hurt, but I didn't help when I should have."
>>
>>21210249
>"Ah, I wondered why I heard no breath from you. So you're the one she scream about in the night? Tell me, what exactly did you do to cause so much pain?"

"Tried to woo her, didn't work, gave her a wink."

>"A wink? You have no eye brows."

You wink.

>"Wha-bu-how? No, never mind. I see why that would do something to one with a susceptible mind..."

You put your helmet back on.

>"If you truly wish to apologize, then you may do so. I lied, earlier, about her being busy. I didn't want anyone to interrupt her therapy."

You're standing next to a door, with a bronze plaque on it.

>"She's in here, go in and talk to her."

The man leaves as you open the door and enter.

You see another man, this one decades younger, probably human.

Then you hear Clarice. She's lying down on a long sofa, her eyes covered by a blindfold.

>"And the other two, they just let him come along. I know he saved us those times, but things like him shouldn't be allowed to travel with us. We should of killed him, or died trying."

You hear her say.

>"I still see him dancing, every night, in the ocean with that massive kraken... I'm stuck there on the deck of the ship, watching as he spins in the water... What does it mean?"

What do you do?
>>
>>21210330
"The winking works by just giving the impression of a wink. Like how the gift of tongues lets people understand what others are saying without actually knowing the language." We don't have to actually know how we wink, but that seems like a satisfying bullshit answer that might give her some peace.
>>
>>21210330
"Sorry" would be a good start.
>>
>>21210330
Resist urge to boast.
Get the attention of the therapist, then wait outside.
>>
>>21210366
"Sorry."

The man writing notes looks up at you.

Clarice, on the other hand, screams and rolls off the chair and under it.

>"He's here, isn't he! I know that voice! He's come to wink and kiss me!"

Clarice is trying to remove her blindfold while stuck under the chair, the therapist is stifling a laugh.

What do you do?

But honestly I doubt that a few winks and an awkward kiss 3 fucking years ago is why you still have nightmares. Yeah, I know that I kill things, I know that I'm a monster in a number of ways, but all I really want to do is help people.

Have you ever seen me kill something that didn't need to die? Have you ever seen me turn down someone in need?"
>>
>>21210468
"I came here because I heard you were screaming yourself awake over my actions. I won't kiss you, I will keep my helmet on, and I'll defend you just like I defend Mark, Adrian, Erik, Stumbles, Meryl, or any of the other people I've befriended since coming back."

The first man that showed you to the room reappears.

>"You'll find it in the main hall, go downstairs and through the large doors on your right."

You follow the man's instruction and enter the room. There's a great circle of chairs so everyone is looking at each other.

>"Ah, a newcomer. Please, take a seat."
He gestures to an empty chair. Which you pull along and into an empty space in the circle.

>"Now, Fred, continue."

The man designated as Fred finishes his story.

>"And he just looked up at me, as he lay there dying, and there was nothing I could do. I still see his eyes, but not so often as it was."

The circle gives a little applaud and congratulates Fred on spilling his sorrows.

>"Now would anyone else like to share?"

You raise your hand.

>"Ah, a first timer eager to talk. This is rare. Go on then, and tell us your name."

"Hello. My name's Daniel, and I have a few stories, actually, and I think you lot might know what I'm saying. But uh, I feel they're more graphic than Fred's."

>"Oh, well, Fred's has been one of the worst I've heard in a while. Surly they can't be that bad?"
The therapist with his note pad says.

You chuckle and begin.

You start with your resurrection and end with annihilating Nomad. Leaving no detail out.

When the final words drops in the air, no one in the circle can speak. No one claps for you like Fred, no one says how brave you are. They just stare. Some with pity, others empathy, but others with disgust and contempt.

What do you say?
>>
>>21210748
"Nomad isn't the only one, just the worst. I've been fighting for a long time, and all I really feel is anger at the way the world is, that there are people that will do something like what he did with no regrets. I don't want to not be angry at it, but I don't want anger to be the only thing I have. I've got more than a lifetime's worth of war and battle under my belt, and I don't want that to rub off on those closest to me."

Just put our head in our hands and try to weep.

"I can't even cry any more. I can't sleep but honestly it would make no difference. I would see these things no matter whether I was awake or asleep. And I'm never going to get away from it because sooner or later some jacked up arrogant fucker with magic is going to go around hurting people and I'm going to be the only one who can hunt them down."

Because it's the only time I feel alive. Because it's the only time I don't always notice that I'm nothing more than bone in a metal suit.

Because if I don't no one else can or will, and I can't let that happen. If I didn't take out Nomad what would have happened? He'd have just continued, more people would have been changed into creatures that wished for nothing except their death and they couldn't even scream."

>"So you do it to protect those who can't protect themselves?"

"Pretty much, it's what Hydra charged me with, so I do it. But I did it before I found religion, albeit I was a lot more vague as to why."

>"Well, I'm not sure what I can say. You do these things because otherwise people would get hurt, but you just hurt yourself doing it. I'm conflicted in saying this, but, well, you need to keep doing it."

Finally, someone who values what you do and the damage it does.

"Thank you, I think I just needed someone to tell me I was doing the right thing."

You stand, give a little head nod to the group, and leave.

Mark and the lads are standing in the main room, steam rising off them in the cold room, they're telling jokes and laughing. They see you and beckon you over.

Swords and hammers might not hurt you, but an army of living diamond, and if they throw you into the volcano. You're going to die out there? And why? Because you feel you should go out there."

Clarice stares at you in silence.

>"You know why I came here, apart from getting over you? To find a way to stop him. No wound can kill him, he sold his flesh for a form made of smoke. Daniel, if you can stop him, and I know you can because you're the angel of death according to some of the scryers here, then you'll have earnt my forgivenes."

You leave her in the room and return to your group and share your information.

"None of you can come with me. The smoke would burn your lungs, and the golems would tear you apart. I'll be back, don't worry. Just stay with Adrian and his family until I return, OK? Mark, train them in my absence, please."

Mark nods, but your apprentices protest at not coming with you. You tell them that to do so is certain death, at least for them.

Soon they submit to your decision.

Exactly! But diamonds are a different matter, we will need a diamond weapon or something that can cool the diamond golems to a brittle state before we can smash them.

You walk towards the volcano once more, you see more and more lumbering figures out in the smog, none come for you.

Soon you come across a stone archway carved into the volcano's face.

You climb out of the magma, glowing white hot, half with heat, half with fury.

Umbra looks over at you as you enter his command center.

Just by walking you set the ground afire, all his maps and plans turn to ash.

Well, perhaps the high elven mages know of a Sending spell we could use to contact Mortimer(not a good idea to reveal to them the existence of Eric, in case we need to kill them in the future[\spoiler]), and ask for his advice in this situation. Mark does the old and welcome wrist lock.

>"May our paths cross again, Daniel."
"I hope they shall."

You and your lads leave the villa and return to the docks, your ship has been left untouched, but you do have a prolonged docking ticket attached to the helm.

You crumple it up and throw it overboard with a laugh.

You tie off and leave.

The wind soon gives you speed, and you man the helm for day and night.

Soon you see the port in sight and you tell the apprentice to get ready to make port.

What do you do?

Return all stolen loot to whatshisname and remark that we need better guards on the boats

We still have the goods we pilfered that we're returning to Sir Gerald. That should be our first stop.

You carry your bag of swag to Gerald's office building and tell him that he needs to put better security on his ships.

He gives you a glare, then laughs and tells you he'll get right on it.

On the way out of the people you robbed looks at you with disgust. You make a feint punch and laugh as they flinch so hard they trip over a chair.

You and your apprentices walk along the Sea Road back to Gallowmere.

What do you do?

Fuck, I just thought of something.

Gary complains.

>"I really liked Ubera, shee has a nice rack."
SpiderDan adds.

Everyone's eyes turn on him.

>"The heart wantsh what the heart wantsh."
He shrugs and looks out at the town.

You quickly leave to find the blacksmith that you bought the first bow from.

>"Yeah, I can make another, got the materials in the workshop. It'll take a while, Ghost wood is hard as nails and really unwieldy."

She hugs you back.

You are in Gallowmere. There is no shrine. And no outpost belonging to Gerald.

>"Hussy? Well, at least I'm not bone down there, I've got a p-"

"Erik, how do I destroy a phylactery? Also, I need more money, I lost mine when Umbra threw me into a volcano."

>"Into a volcano? Why were you playing near one? Someone could get hurt... As for the money, take a look in the vaults, I think there's something down there. As for the phylactery? No can do, I know how to make one, but to destroy it? Not a clue."

Well, we should probably tell SpiderDan's parents we didn't get him murdered.
Say hi to everyone else.
Check the vaults, praying it doesn't turn into an adventure of it's own.
Then look up anything we can about a phylactery in Erik's library.

>"If men were meant to fly they'd of been born with wings, Daniel."

Erik takes out a pocket watch, closes his hands around it and mutters a spell.

>>21212792
>"The hells are running just fine now, deary. I don't know much about necromancy, infernal is where it's at. As for your mind? Dear, I'm not going near it. I can smell that pope's blood on you."

Erik returns to his conversation with Areal.

You head down into the vaults.

You have a guess at the combination.

1111.

The door creaks open with rusty hinges.

Inside the contents glitter like the seas on a bright summer's day.

Gold and silver as far as the eye can see. And entire 20ft by 20ft, filled with money and precious jewels. Where the hell did Erik get it all?

You grab a handful of gold and close the door.

>>21212814
Erik didn't choose Lichhood, he wanted to be an illusionist. But his master made a bad deal and his souls got blasted out his arse and into his phylactery.

As it what his is, not telling.

"He was a bad pope, thousands were dying because of him throwing a fucking hissyfit over naming convention. It was the right thing to do."

You fail to swim or dance through solid metal, you just make a mess in your flailing.

You head out to the mountain. It seems as though the mining corporation that hired those years ago has started mining it. Tracks going in and out of the mountain are laden with carts full of coal and other metals.

Torches burn along the rock, away from coal and dust.

You see the Obelisk across the cavern standing watch over the operation.

>>
>>21212992
I also realize that the "corpse' is probably fertilizer by now, but these type of gods always seem to find ways to come back.
>>
>>21212965
You walk across the lake bed, crushing long forgotten skeletons as you go.

The Obelisk is far taller now that the water's all gone. But the silvery lines that make pictures are still there.

You can see pictures reminiscent of your deeds.

A winged skeleton strikes down foe after foe. A mountain of a man, a boy god, a pope, a demon, a lord of a volcano. Each one is dead at the skeleton's feet.

Odd.

>>21212992

"Danyel Waz Hear" is forever carved into the obelisk.

You leave the cavern and purchase armour from the blacksmith with the gold.

A fine new set of plate and chain, and a nice new helmet.

You return to the docks and board your ship.

After a few days you're back in Sileo, and after another day's walk you've returned to the mountain.

You use the pocket watch/compass to guide you to the caved in tunnel, which you open once more.

A brisk jog down the tunnel leads you into the glassed room. Everything is how you left it, including Umbra.

So....what did he do apart from make a deal?
>>
>>21213701
How do you think people attain Lichhood? (Erik excluded, he didn't choose it, he was cursed with it). What did Mort know to do, but couldn't?

What kind of magic removed the flesh and turns a man to ash?

The answer? Pretty fucked up stuff.
>>
>>21213716
Fuck. Looks like we need to find redemption for his sacrifices too.
>>
>>21213716
Fuck. Well, at least we know he's going to get exactly what he deserves.
>>
>>21213716
God damnit, this is what happens when we try not to be an inferno of rage
>>
We've been killing, or SUPER KILLING in Nomad's case, all our targets. Morty is the only one who got off easy because he surrendered. It's nice we gave Umbra a slightly happy ending, well better than living forever in a statue.
>>
>>21213735
Bah, we just made a new deal for him. Wherever his wife is, I'd think there's some kind of judging system in place.

So, we just gave him a chance, but rest of this stuff is just going to be dependent on his ability to man up and take what's due.
>>
>>21213788
True dat, and in any case he isn't leaving until he's good and redeemed under the standards of the harshest judges of character around
>>
>>21213767
Oh yeah, he's going to be there for a while.

>>21213783
Indeed, this is why not many people will do whatever the participants want. Because you do some chraazay stuff. And it bites you in the end, but I like giving you choice. Total choice.

>>21213788
He gets no say at all in the Pit. Just whatever they're going to give him until he's truly sorry for his actions.
>>
>>21213820
I'd say there's 2 steps to redemption. Being truly sorry, and doing something to set things right. Its your story, but I think that'd be a neat arc. Plus, it'd probably be good for fixing things in our head if we went and set things right instead of just murdering the ever-loving shit out of everything.
>>
>>21213872
You can't set things right, because the way you bring order is to murder the fuck out of things.

And you really don't feel sorry for it, either.

But if you want to, then I shall write it. Maybe after you deal with the remaining magicals.
>>
>>21213893
I'm just trying to think about how we'd fix our fucked up head, I don't really think we need to go full lawful good here. Just maybe have some good sprinkled in with the bad so we don't only have our rage. Definitely agree that we should have to deal with Umbra again at some point though, in person or otherwise.
>>
>>21213971
Time isn't linear in the Pit, so maybe.
>>
>>21213981
Intredasting. Well, thank you for the thread as always OP

By the way, Aku sends his love. Something about tea parties and hats, too. I dunno.
