Hello one and all, this is a quest thread in the same style as the Civ games, but instead of controlling a civilization you control a company. First I will present you with a number of choices to be made in order to start the game. Here are the details of the starting city:

Silverdale:
Population: Roughly 100,000 humans, 25,000 other non standard humanoids (including dwarf, kobold, satyr, and mountain troll)

Architecture: The city has been sack and rebuilt multiple times throughout the ages, this has caused it to be built on mostly, older versions of itself. The city extends deeply into the earth, which creates a perfect hiding place for every scum and dealer possible. The city has also build high into the sky, new skyscrapers nearly touching the clouds in their bronze glory.

Leadership: A council of merchant lords (elected for three year terms by the bright and good of the city) share power with the Baron of Silverdale, a mysterious figure that has not been seen in years. The underworld is ruled by several families, each controlling different illegal markets.

Defense: There is a standing law enforcement force known as the Toppers, powerful and organized enough to keep crime low on at least the upper levels.
>>
Colour me interested!
>>
Company type -- This will affect your starting stats

---------------------

Courier Company: Starts with 1 extra contract.

Security Company: More starting employees.

Money Lender: Starts with larger coinage amount.

[Interest idea here]: If you guys come up with an idea I will add modifiers to it. Creativity always gets a bonus.

Business Location -- This will affect your starting relations

---------------------------

Upper City: Easier to gain contracts with Baron's Militia and Royal Orders

Middle City: Neutral with both Military and Crime Syndicates.

Lower City: Easier to gain contracts with Crime Lords.

Docks: Easier to gain contracts with Merchant Lords.
>>
Money lender in the Docks. We Jew nao!

Captcha: oidude Ezra, Ezra's the boss, you heard it here!
>>
>>21209965
Heirloom, Your CEO has inherited an heirloom from his grandfather, who used to run one of the largest companies in Silverdale. This heirloom grants a special bonus. Pick two.

---------------------

Gold Pocket Watch: A intracite pocket watch that appears to keep time unnaturally well: Grants an extra starting action point

Great Ledger: An old and dusty ledger from Grandfather's company, it has the names of all the best families: This will allow you to identify and hire better employees more easily

Jeweled Dagger: Your grandfather's pride and joy, carved from an iron wood tree on the eastern continent: Much less likely that your company will be robbed from

Tome of Tax Law: A old archaic version of Silverdale tax law, maybe some of the loopholes in here may come in handy: 20% discount to yearly taxes

-------------------------------

Company name: Anything you want, dazzle me.

After we come to a conscious the game shall begin!

Awesome, I'll have to get a few more votes in before we start off proper!

Ok It appears the people want us to be a Money Lender in the Docks with the Tome of Tax Law. However the second heirloom is still up for grabs between the Jeweled Dagger and the Golden Pocket Watch!

Guildmann&Sochss Company:
Employees: 10

Coffers: 500 Tarllings

Buildings: Small office on the edge of the docks.

Current Jobs: Lending money to multiple local canneries, the interest coming in is quite good. (15 Tarllings per turn)
Alliances: Small non-aggression pacts with both the local spice merchants of the merchant lords
.
Special Offers: None

Possible Purchases:
300 Tarllings: Expand the business into a second building, specify what location the building should be in.
200 Tarllings: Buy yourself and your top employees into this year’s Merchant Ball. Will surely spell some good contracts.
100 Tarllings: Employee Lounge upgrade, will help your employees relax and increase moral
50 Tarllings: Jussic Maker, allows employees to brew this sickly sweet beverage to keep up longer and work longer hours. Small boost to income.
50 Tarllings: Security Dog, less likely the office will be broken into.
>>
>>21210459
I'll vote for 100 Tarllings total, to buy the security dog and the jussic maker, and put out some hooks for some people in need of funds.
>>
Action Points: ONE

What will you choose to do?

A) Search for a job (Specify what type, early on it can be anything, but new jobs will open as the company specializes)

B) Company alliances. (Specify whether with the crime lords, the merchant lords, or the braon's subsidiaries)

C) Hiring time (Search for new employes to fill the company's ranks)

D) Research into a new product for the market.

E) Business venture (Can be either legal or illegal, specify what you would like to do)

F) Investment (You may specify any business feasible within the capitol, later I will provide options depending on the company's specialization)

G) Other.
>>
>>21210459
Lets have:
>200 Tarllings: Buy yourself and your top employees into this year’s Merchant Ball. Will surely spell some good contracts.
>50 Tarllings: Security Dog, less likely the office will be broken into.
>>
>>21210459
Figuring we should go with the Merchant Ball option. Focusing on contracts at the start will be very good in the long run.

Plus Jews.
>>
>>21210479
Haha, for the actions we can take refer to my actions post. Your purchase idea will be taken into account however. If a majority agrees we will buy the item.

Also a note on the system. Dice rolls are going on behind the scenes for things such as robberies and certain contracts becoming available. Because you choose to buy certain things these dice rolls with change. Such as the dagger, now because of this I will have to roll something far more difficult to get for you all to be robbed.
>>
>>21210494
B), lets try and get an alliance with the merchants.
>>
>>21210459
Ball+early coffe machine+doggie=300

Also, what tech level are we dealing with here?
>>
>>21210530
And this, I support this!
>>
>>21210459
Contacts are important, so we should buy in to the Merchant's Ball, and a Security Dog is a good idea to begin with. (Security is going to be important, with the amount of cash we'll need to keep laying about, considering we're a moneylender).

I would suggest some diversification. Invest in some manufactories (either E or F), either as a partner for some up-and-comer (F) or manufacturing basic consumer goods (E)
>>
I vote Ball + Coffee + Alliance with Merchants

I think we can hold off on the dog purchase
>>
>>21210494
I'll go with F. investing in a shipping company on the docks.
>>
>>21210531
Post industrialization with low magic. There is a fair amount of steam power, along with the recent invention of high tension clock work that allows for these new "automobiles". Airships crowd the space in the sky, often shutting out all light. There is no electricity and instead the streets are lit with lanterns that burn the fatty blood oil harvested from whales imported from Whale Watch to the north. This unfortunately means a blood mist constantly clings to the ground across the city (except the in the upper city with their fancy magic crystal lights, boo them)

Hope that helps >.>

Rolled 10, 2 = 12

Well, it seems the general trend is heading towards:
Purchasing Merchant Ball, the Jussic Maker, and possible purchase the dog as well.
and F) Investing in a company (either manufacturing manufacturing or shipping)

There will be two rolls. The first will be if we purchase the dog or not 1-5 buy it 6-10 don't. The second will be Shipping if 1-5 and Manufacturing if 6-10
>>
>>21210626
Splendid, just what I had hoped for really. Should we perhaps investigate in the future possibilities of expanding into this whaling buissnes, seems potentialy lucrative, no?
>>21210668 you were of course my inspiration, dear partner
>>
>>21210724
inb4 robbery without dog
>>
>>21210724
splendid, now, we should certainly expand into this whaling business, sending a diplomatic ship up there, using the company we invested in. As>>21210727
suggested.
>>
>>21210724
Aaand we're off!
>>
>>21210735
We have the Dagger, which makes the dog Useful instead of Critical. I agree we should have the dog - it's a small expenditure and any increase in Security is good - but its absence won't be company-breaking at this juncture.
>>
>>21210768
My roll fu is weak and pathetic, like that of a small child...
>>
>>21210774
agreed, but we should work towards security firms in the near future to just insure that a bit.
>>
>>21210798
you rack disaprin
>>
Rolled 9, 1 = 10

>>21210798
Oy vey...
>>
>>21210815
Perhaps we should diversify into a Security firm next?
>>
>>21210848
I would suggest that after the investment into the whales, so that we can slowly take over the gathering and distrbution of it, this would give us enough money to work with to make those firms work for us.
>>
The heads of the company go down to meat with Carter Jukkin, Captain of the Maiden's Fancy. The man is enormous, broad shouldered with an enormous beard. After a rough start however they find he too enjoying the finer things in life (namely expensive alcohol) after lengthy deliberations he agrees to take a bit of the companies coinage in exchange for his loyalty, and plants to put the money to good use.

Guildmann&Sochss Company:
Employees: 10 (1 occupied)

Coffers: 500 - 200 (tickets) - 50 (Jussic) - 10 (Employee Wages) + 15 (contract) + 5 (Jussic Maker) = 260 Tarrlings

Buildings: Small office on the edge of the docks.

Current Jobs: Lending money to multiple local canneries, the interest coming in is quite good. (15 Tarllings per turn)

Alliances: Small non-aggression pacts with both the local spice merchants of the merchant lords
.
Special Offers:
The Maiden's Favor: Due to your budding relationship with Mr. Jukkin a new job has become available. Lending with him will surely bring a hefty reward. (20 Tarrlings per turn, will occupy 3 employees)
The Merchants are Coming, the Merchants are Coming: In two months time the Merchant's ball will occur, best be ready to strut your stuff.

Possible Purchases:
300 Tarllings: Expand the business into a second building, specify what location the building should be in.
100 Tarllings: Employee Lounge upgrade, will help your employees relax and increase moral
100 Tarllings: Library upgrade, add a library to the office with enormous volumes on tax law. Will allow for a 10% discount on yearly taxes.
50 Tarllings: Fancy dress wear, will allow for business relations to be more easily made with those of good public standing.
50 Tarllings: Security Dog, less likely the office will be broken into.
>>
Action Points: ONE

What will you choose to do?

A) Search for a job (Specify what type, early on it can be anything, but new jobs will open as the company specializes)
Special: The Maiden's Favor

B) Company alliances. (Specify whether with the crime lords, the merchant lords, or the braon's subsidiaries)

C) Hiring time (Search for new employes to fill the company's ranks)

D) Research into a new product for the market.

A) Let's do the special.
>>
>>21210919
Take the offer of the ship, use it to go to the north, and invest in those whalers to gain the profit of their oil, and buy some of that fancy dressware, I suggest the dog too
>>
>>21210919
Well, lending with the Maiden's Favor is the obvious choice for action.

Fancy Dress is a must, at some point before the ball, so let's do that now, and the dog to increase our security.
>>
>>21210874
We should definetly take the good captain up on his offer, I smell a potential profit here. And I belive we should by some fancy new suits, so as not to come of as shabby at the ball
>>
>>21210937
wait, I guess that's two actions. Just the special then
>>
Oh yeah, if anyone has any suggestions for how I should be running this feel free to say something. This is my first time running a civ game so I might be doing something wrong.

I was thinking about making special free actions from now on (after this one). Because it seems to railroady for me to do it like this.

Oh and each turn is ~1 month. Is everyone ok with that? I'll add that to the information sheet each turn.
>>
>>21210952
>>21210937
And of course a dog, a precious little puppy to keep a tireless vigil throughout the night. Let's call him Samson
>>
Mr Goldstein votes for Maiden's Favor
>>
>>21211001
game seems fine to me, plenty of choices, more actions in appreciated, if you could manage
>>
Ok Everyone, slight rule change. You all have two action points now to spend per turn. This will increase as time goes on depending on several factors including employee count, business size, and fancyiatude (ok maybe not that one).

Anyway:

Jukkin is delighted to receive the money and has pledged his loyalty to the company. His ship is now yours for use whenever you see fit, as long as he can fit it into his busy schedule. The man seems to thing that following your company will lead to his own rolling in Tarllings, quite the right idea.

Formal Wear has been purchased, maybe not garments fit for a baron, but at least good enough to make you presentable in any meetings with the upper echelons of the city.

Samson the dog has now come to your company. The little guy is of an indistinguishable breed., but already fiercely wants to defend the office. He's only a puppy now, you'll just have to see what happens as he grows. Also, as an added bonus the extra adorable he spreads around the office seems to have increased moral, lowering the chance of a worker's strike.
>>
>>21211134
PET THE PUPPY! Give that adorable puppy some pats on the head, belly rubs and scritches behind the ear.
>>
Guildmann&Sochss Company:
Date: August, 1 month before Merchant's Ball.

Employees: 10 (4 occupied)

Coffers: 260 - 50 (clothes) - 50 (dog) - 10 (Employee wages) + 35 (contracts) + 10 (Jussic Maker) = 195 Tarllings

Buildings: Small office on the edge of the docks.

Current Jobs: Lending money to multiple local canneries, the interest coming in is quite good. (15 Tarllings per turn)
Lending money to the good ship Maiden's Fancy, returning a good profit (20 Tarrlings per turn)

Alliances: Small non-aggression pacts with the local spice merchants of the merchant lords.
Business partnership with Captain Jukkin of the Maiden's Fancy.
.
Special Offers:
The Merchants are Coming, the Merchants are Coming: In two months time the Merchant's ball will occur, best be ready to strut your stuff.

Possible Purchases:
300 Tarllings: Expand the business into a second building, specify what location the building should be in.

100 Tarllings: Library upgrade, add a library to the office with enormous volumes on tax law. Will allow for a 10% discount on yearly taxes.
50 Tarllings: Shop Front upgrade, make the business look more presentable, a fresh coat of paint and all. WIll increase the chance of contracts presenting themselves.
50 Tarllings: Uniforms, make the company look like a proper business. Will increase the employee moral slightly.
>>
>>21211134
Might I suggest that instead of giving us two actions every turn, Specials give us specific decisions to make (that do not, in and of themselves, require an action point)

Also, a vote for E) Security Firm. Focus on the docks and our immediate area.

What will you choose to do?

Also, I vote we upgrade our Shopfront and get Uniforms, then curtail spending for a bit.

For our actions, I suggest a Business Venture (E) in the form of a Security firm and invest (E or F) in a manufactory (I'm not picky about the specifics thereof).

>>
Uniforms have been purchased, in order to get them to fit the diverse statures of your company (Especially Shale the Rock Troll, he took twice as much cloth as everyone else) a tailor had to be hired. Luckily due to smooth talking and new fancy dress wear (a tailor always appreciated fine work). Arthur Tibbles, the tailor, now have a business relation with your company.

A new coat of pain now dawns the shop front, making it nice and white and presentable. The company name now shines down in large golden letters from right above the main window. Finally you're starting to look like a real business.

The heads of the company head into the upper city to inspect the new factories pumping out the amazing high tension clockwork automobiles. They are refused a meeting with the head of the company, however as they leave a man off the assembly line runs after them yelling.

"Sir, you're here to find someone who can make you money right? Look no further, I'm tired of putting together main springs. I can do this better than any of 'em, just give me the start up money and I'll show you what I'm made of."

"Aha, yes! You won't be sorry, I promise." As the man takes the small bag of golden coins from your hand he begin to spinet off towards his station again, but not before shouting back, "Oh yeah, my names Eric. Trust me you won't be sorry."

The company heads leave bewildered, and return to the office. For the next few days nothing seems to happen and they worry that they might have made a bad investment. However four days after the investment they hear a loud honk from in front of the store. A high tension clockwork car sits in front of the building, behind the driver's seat is Erik.

"I got a bit of a present for ya, just don't ask where I got the parts!" (You gain one employee, Eric the Dwarf, who is extremely experienced with engineering. Also you gain 1 automobile, which is able to traverse the city far faster than on foot, and is a status symbol among nobles)

"A contract? Do I look like I'm hurting for money?" The rock troll gestures around the room, the walls are lined with hunting trophies and long tables are stack high with plates of food and drink.

The merchant's balls in an enormous and extravagant affair. Instead of the normal servants magi-construct weave their way between the wealthy merchant lords, balancing platters of food atop their ceramic domes. A band off to one side plays a slow melody, but no one is dancing. Fat merchants speak to one another in tight nit groups, making and breaking alliances.

Who do you approach.

[] Dom "Cannery Row" Collin, owner of other three dozen canneries, and supplier of most of the canned food consumed in Silverdale.
[] Richard Tolkein, Owner of Tolkein's Flying High Airship Service, a company that does most of the air shipping in and out of Silverdale
[] Max Filber "Master of the Putrid River", owns the entirety of the systems under silver dale that handles waste treatment in and out of the city.
[] Ingrid Gallin, Head of the prestigious Gallin family and owner of the largest bank in the city Said to be the richest woman on the eastern continent.

Several employees go to meet with the Smugglers down in the lower city. After a long while trawling through bars they eventually find a man who is willing to tell them about the intricate smuggling business going in and out of the city. He is a bar man, with one hand.

"Well, if ya want to spend some money in the business you need to lose that garb." he points to the uniforms.

"Smugglers don't wear stuff like that, we gotta be inconspicuous. That's why I got those two men watching ya." he points with his stump to a table with two large men sitting at it.

"If ya try to go to the Toppers them two will beat ya till you can't see straight enough to identify me any longer, aha. Don't worry though, I mean ya no harm."

[how do you respond?]
>>
>>21212092
I'd go with dick tolkein, and respond affirmanitively to the smuggler
>>
>>21212092
Erik would synergize well with >[x] Richard Tolkein, most likely. Just a thought.

On the Smuggler Front:
"No offense taken. However, if you're interested in expanding your operation or in a legitimate facade, we would be interested in investing in same. We'll be sure to conduct any further dealings out of uniform."
>>
Max Filber his sewers and exct would be perfect for potential smuggling.

Listen to the smuggler seems he has good advice.
>>
Looks like Mr. Tolkein it is!

"Well, I don't exactly need any money as you can see, but... there are always smaller companies sprouting up that need to be nurtured. Maybe we can work something out, I'll set you up with one of them, and promise not to touch it while you try your game out. How does that sound?"

[how do you reply to Mr. Tolkein?]

"Well, I think we might be able to put a few coins to good use. Maybe we can work out a deal."

[Hand over 20 Tarllings]
[Tell him you'll give him the money on a later date]
[Refuse and leave]
>>
>>21212092
voting for Tolkien, with the smugglers something along the lines of "You can be assured that going to the toppers would not be in our interest at all, and in the future we will be sure to dress more inconspicuously when we meet with you."
>>
>>2121231
tell him we will send him the money later as I am damn suspicious why such a rich man would ask for momey upfront and in the ball. Best confirm his offer before offering payment.
>>
>>21212319
agree, and ask to set up a formal meeting for the exchange. Then again, we might not want to look poor, leaving the decision to give funds up to the others.
>>
>>21212366
Shit, the 20 Tarllings is for the smuggler thing not Mr. Tolkein. I should have separated those with a line.
>>
>>21212386
oooohhhh..... then I'll go with a yeah to the smugglah
>>
>>21212319
>Mr Tolkein
"That would be splendid, Mr. Tolkein."

>For the smugglers
[hand over 20 Tarllings with a promise of more to come - IF we see returns. We are a businessman, after all.]
>>
>>21212408
seconded
>>
>>21212386
oh if its the smugglers then yeah money upfront.
>>
>>21212319
"Ah, excelent. How about after the ball we can set up a formal meeting. I'll be happy to help your company along."

-------------

"Good, now you two run along. I'll have a by send over your earning in a bit."
