You are Anon, a street fighter without a title, and you think it's time to reclaim main character status.

>previous threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Street%20Fighter

"Great! See you soon!" Tatsuya says. He hangs up the phone and gives you a smile. It's the kind that makes you think of a hungry wolf finding its prey. "Well, we've got a couple hours before the train pulls into Metro City. You have until then to win your title back."

The doors of the train close. Nobody else is in this compartment but you and Tatsuya, standing awkwardly in the middle of the aisle.

"Mind if I get changed?" you ask. "I'm not really in my fighting gear."

"What, the bowtie and suspenders? That's actually fighting gear?" Tatsuya asks. "Sure, take your time."

You retire to the bathroom and unpack your traveling bag. While you're in the middle of changing you feel a lurch as the train starts. No way out now. When you're sure your appearance is sufficiently dapper you pick up your sticks. It's been over a month since you fought. The pre-fight jitters, the feeling in the pit of your stomach, the adrenaline making your blood boil, it's nice to have it back. The weapons feel right in your hands.

You exit to find Tatsuya seated comfortably, reading an old US magazine. "Yo," he says. "We doing this?" He sets the magazine aside and comes to his feet in the aisle. There's enough room to manuever, but you're going to be temporarily limited to moving backwards and forwards it seems.

Tatsuya raises his hands in a ready stance. Compared to the nervous energy you feel he actually seems perfectly calm.

"Ready when you are," he says.

>move in, press the attack
>stay your ground. wait for him to move and then counter.

You didn't spend a month under the brutal training regimen of Kyokugen for nothing. Time to put this newly monstrous strength to good use! You step in to take the initiative, swinging one of the sticks straight for Tatsuya's temple. You like the guy, but this has to be fast.

It isn't until your stick is halfway to his temple that it occurs to you that he's been doing the Kyokugen training for a lot longer than you have. By the time your stick is two inches from where his temple would have been he's whipped his head forward into a headbutt. You step back and try to come back to a ready stance, but he's already grabbed your collar. He lifts you straight into the ceiling. He does it a couple more times for effect before he throws you down the aisle. You roll to a stop and stagger to your feet, wiping a bit of blood from your nose. Stupid headbutts, everybody's always headbutting.

"What do you think I've been trying to teach you this last month?" he asks.

"To headbutt, and to be headbutted?" you ask. You raise your hands into a ready position again. Hopefully the bloody nose will stop on its own.

"Nope." He takes a step forward and raises his hands again. This time there's enough distance you won't be surprised and introduced to the ceiling again.

"Wolverine handling?" you ask. You edge forward a little bit. Too much range - maybe twenty feet? How fast can Tatsuya move in a fight?

"We said we wouldn't talk about that. And clearly not."

"What, then?" you ask. You eye his stance - no flaws you can detect right away. For all its difficulty to learn Kyokugen is a fairly efficient style with its power.

"You're not thinking hard enough!" he says. "Ko'oh ken!" He whips a hand out and throws a chi attack at you. You didn't know he could actually do that.

You swing the sticks a golf arc that's become familiar. The chi attack connects with a jolt that shoots up your arms, returning to Tatsuya fast enough to slip past his raising guard and into his face. He raises his hand to a newly-bloodied lip and grins.

"You managed to put some extra speed on it, huh? Not bad." He begins to move down the aisle - not rushing, not slow, but taking deliberate steps, maintaining guard all the while. "But you still haven't answered my question."

Careful distance, you think. You move to just outside of Tatsuya's striking range and swing. He moves forward slowly and steadily, like a tank. You throw out small strikes and feints, but none seem to pass that defense.

Hell with it, you think, swinging for the knee. Maybe I can trip him up. You extend just enough that you're in range for a front snap kick that connects like a freight train, your stick harmlessly bouncing off his thigh.

You move back another few feet, raising your guard again, aware of how quickly you're running out of space.

"I'm serious. What's the difference between you and me?" Tatsuya asks. "Think it over."

"Size," you try.

"Wrong. Last ass-kicking I got was from a guy a foot shorter than you. Threw me around something fierce."

"Okay, kids."

"Nope."

You take another step back, watching for the slightest opening from Tatsuya. No luck so far.

"The answer," he says, suddenly moving forward, "is that you're a fighter." A light jab connects, followed almost instantly by dozens of short punches. It's a standard Kyokugen move, but this is the first time you've ever felt it. Oh god it sucks to be on the receiving end of it. It's almost a relief when the final uppercut comes, knocking you against the wall. "And I'm not. I'm retired. If you're not enough of a fighter to beat up a retired old man you've got no chance on the world level."

You're running out of space before you're in Tatsuya's range and too close to use your attacks effectively.

In a daze, you follow him to a television in the center of a meadow. He carefully plugs the Sega Saturn cables into the TV.

"This is a dream, isn't it? I'm still on that train."

"I wouldn't know of such things."

"I mean, I'm pretty sure Segata Sanshiro isn't a real guy."

"Your spirit guide takes the form most necessary for you at this time. You're controller two."

"But this is my dream," you say. "And don't you speak Japanese?"

"I do. But you don't. It's my Saturn, you're player two."

He presses the on button and sits beside you in the grass. Virtua Fighter turns on. Segata Sanshiro chooses VS and selects himself as a player.

You've never actually played Virtua Fighter, come to think of it. That may explain these character choices.

The Tekken guy, you think. At least he's from a fighting game you played?

The virtual Tatsuya knocks him over and takes his spot when you try to select him. You try selecting your dad and the ghost, no matter who else you try to choose Tatsuya shoves them off screen. Eventually you choose Tatsuya.

God you hope you never have to tell anyone about this.

As the game starts you try out the controls. Two punch buttons, two kicks. The virtual Tatsuya seems to fight about like the real one, albeit kind of awkward and slow. And blocky. You remember seeing this game in arcades and being shocked at how astonishingly lifelike it looked. Now...wow. Just wow.

You have a vague memory of a fighting game based on early years of the KoF tournament, back when it was still called Fatal Fighting or something like that? The big thing for Kyokugen's fighter that year was forward-back-forward punch. You try it out and Tetsuya launches one of those punch combos. Segata Sanshiro blocks it, of course.

Alright, fireball? Quartercircle forward and punch? You kind of screw up the button command but on your second or third try you finally launch one. Segata simply scoots sideways and avoids it.

"That's fine in the game, but we're fighting on a train. I can't sidestep," you say.

"Who's fighting a what now?" he asks.

"Aren't you hear to teach me some technique to defeat him?"

"I came here to play Sega Saturn," he sees, barely taking his eyes off the screen. Before you know it he's inside your range and throwing you. You get up and try to strike back but he throws you again and again. The match is over before you know it. The game begins blaring his theme, that haunting SEGATA SANSHIRO! SEGATA SANSHIRO! over and over.

"So I have to throw him? Is that it?" you ask.

"Throw who? Come on, let's play another round."

"I've gotta - I've got a thing. A guy to fight."

Segata Sanshiro shoots to his feet. He clearly isn't impressed with this excuse. You come to your feet and realize you don't have any weapons. What kind of terrible subconscious is this?

You are Anon, a street fighter who's been battling his spirit guide for what feels like forever.

You started out striking, your natural response when you're down to no weapons. Segata Sanshiro shut that down quickly. Thankfully when you were a kid you had the importance of proper breakfalls drilled into you. Dozens upon dozens of throws later you finally caught onto the judo rules he was trying to force on you. Another hundred or so throws later and you were finally starting to give as good as you got.

You now find yourself sitting on the grass, trying to catch your breath. Segata sits beside you, giving you a smile. It seems you've won some measure of respect.

"Okay, so you came to teach me judo? Or am I just supposed to remember some throws I learned and then never practiced? I'm really not clear on how this spirit guide thing works."

"It's okay, Anon," he says. "The answer doesn't matter."

"The method is less important than the learning, huh?" you ask. You're starting to catch onto his wavelength a little bit.

"No. Compared to playing more Sega." He shoves the controller back into your hands. Out of gratitude you give him another match.

You see if Zangief grapple were done by a normal command that would make him broken as fuck

The same way Guile would be terribly broken if the Sonic Boom was a hadouken

Tatsuya throws out a stepping straight, obviously expecting you to try to keep distance. You step forward and through it, dropping the sticks. He barely has time to register the surprise before you lock the arm and press your hip against his.

You vaguely remember where all that information might have been buried in your subconscious. Back in middle school Mayor Haggar's health initiatives were all concerned around wrestling. You had a choice between judo, aikido of sambo for a required course in seventh grade. God this city is weird.

"Sega Satan, SHIRO!" you yell as you plough him into the floor.

Fun fact: For a single 360, you don't have to do a full 360. It's really a 270. Just go from foward to down to back to up and hit a button. Just a simple roll of the thumb/wrist.
It's possible to a standing 720 also, but that requires some fancy buffering.

Tatsuya comes back to consciousness just as the train begins slowing down. You expected him to be upset, but instead he grins.

"How's your head?" you ask. You hand him a paper towel from the bathroom as he stands up. You're holding a similar one against your nose to keep the bloody nose from reopening.

"Been better. Nice throw," he says. He feels his head. "Need to work on your technique. Drop someone less tough than me that way and you might hospitalize them."

"I thought you said you weren't a fighter," you say. You hand him another few paper towels. You really kinda did a number on his head.

"I'm not. Glad to see you are, though." He gives you a punch on the arm. It would have floored you before the Kyokugen training. "You did me proud. And I'm serious, I wasn't looking forward to all the travel to be a World Warrior." He looks thoughtful for a minute. The train comes to a full stop and you hear the distinct hiss of the doors opening. He's oblivious to Ellie and Belle standing at the platform - close enough to hear - as he asks "Hey, what do you think about my daughter? I'm serious this time."

"Met her once. Packs a mean right hook for someone so young," you say. "She's also behind you."

"Hi dad," she interrupts. Her fists are bunched at her sides, trembing as she rapidly turns red.

"H-hi, Ellie," he says. "All this blood isn't as bad as it loo-"

"HA HA NICE TO SEE YOU DAD. I'LL JUST BE GOING TO SOUTHTOWN NOW, SEE YOU SOON," she says, stepping past the pair of you onto the train. Belle follows her, shrugging kind of apologetically.

Tatsuya steps off the train with you, smiling and waving as broadly as he can as he pulls you away. You start to protest.

"She's sensitive about looking younger than she is."

"Oh. Oh! So I-"

"Neither of us can go to Southtown for awhile." His face falls once the pair of you are out of sight of the train. Only for a moment, then he perks back up. "Hey, mind if I crash with you for a bit? We can keep up your training until the World Warrior tournament starts!"

Ellie's not underage, she's roughly twenty-two to twenty-three. Just looks around 18 and is really self-conscious about it. I've pegged Anon as being roughly mid twenties.

>>21242160

No character in this quest will escape the spaghetti. Pete infected us all.

>>21242013

Automatically taking crit fails only counts on skill checks and the like, for choosing an option/a line it goes to the highest number.

You guys still have a free escape from a fail, by the way! I just went with it this time because I thought the Segata Sanshiro angle would be fun.

>>21242191

By Pete's reckoning, at this point:

Power S
Speed A
Defense B
Chi C
Sega Saturn: Abysmal.

I meant more in the sense that this is a landmark thing that effects how she sees us. We can't take a train to Southtown and mention that she's kinda cute.

Romancan is by no means out of the question, but we now have to overcome her being pissed at us.

And I guess I'm just not a fan of the RomCom 'guy makes horrible impression on girl, softens up, romance' thing.
>>
>>21243071
Really? I thought it had to do with his father being there. What sort of strange, silly things has Tetsuya been telling anon about her, trying to "sell"her like she was in a hurry to marry. And what did he think about it, to- no, wait, what does it matter what Anon thinks? fuck that guy. Stupid baka Anon, it's not like she wants his affection or anything.

That's a potential point to disagree on. Metaphorically, Anon isn't wrong. Tatsuya has something to fight for beyond himself (even though he doesn't really fight anymore). It is a heavy load that makes one's punches that much stronger. Watch Hajime no Ippo, and they'll talk about what it means to fight for something more and to be strong.

Maki is Guy's would-be sister-in-law and a ninja that acts like a busuzoku biker gal. She was pretty cheesed for the longest time because her father, the master of Bushin-ryuu Ninjutsu, chose Guy as the heir to Bushin-ryuu and not her, mostly because she's not as reserved as Guy is. Not that that's stopped her.
>>

She's not, really. But it's worth bringing up that there's a special intro in CvS2 with Maki vs. Yamazaki: both try to out-gangster the other for a little bit.
>>
>>21243677

That's a good point. I was mostly trying to shoot for Anon needing to tap into whatever inner reserve makes him keep fighting through the pain when anyone else would have given up, or go on a dream quest to learn judo or what have you. Next time Tatsuya gets some spotlight that should come up.
