Welcome to Grimoire Quest!

You are. . . whoever is currently holding the grimoire at any given time. As people gain possession of the tome, they discover new rituals and spells which are then added to the translated notes pictured.

Currently, you are Erik Leet, a former bar owner who has taken to a gritty noir PI archetype in an attempt to trick the setting's narrative based magic system into making you immortal.

Recently, you feel unconscious due to wounds sustained in a fight with a demon you accidentally summoned much earlier. You managed to escape police, after killing the demon, with your wounded friend, a former employee who is now a half-spryte due to shenanigans, but were unsure of her chances of survival before you blacked out.

You awoke fully healed and in the presence of a powerful Fae, summoned by a hobo who took the grimoire while you slept. You are in a unknown location styled like a ballroom, the grimoire is under your chair, and the Fae has told you Roxie is somewhere nearby also fully healed.

The Fae seems to have no intention of letting you go, however, believing you to be a "hero" and thus a interesting novelty to have around.

Second thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/21170728/

--

"Okay," you begin, "so where the hell are we right now exactly? And if you are all about endorsing me, then how about you teach me more magic and retrieve me my shotgun?"

"Yay! I am so glad that long pause is over!" The Fae excames to your confusion, "And we are together of course. I wont teach you magic because you aren't a real warlock and I hate warlocks anyway, don't you? And I won't get your shotgun because the arch-mage of earth has it. . . Though I do wonder if he wasn't bluffing in hindsight. . . I also didn't even check to make sure I killed him! Oops!"
>>
>>21269104
time to be the detective!
>>
>>21269133

You inhale deeply, reminding yourself that the Fae isn't really retarded she is just wacky because she is a fairy thing and can't help it. Fuck you hate the fairy things, you're wandering if Roxie had a point about just going with demons. Of course she may also be intentionally aggravating you.

You scan your surroundings, hoping for some clue as to your location. The room is massive, and almost completely empty. The only objects in the room are the two chairs and table you and the Fae are seated at, and a large crystal chandelier directly above you. The room then expands maybe sixty feet in any direction, perfectly circular, with only two doors. One, massive and very decorated, behind the Fae and one, more normal looking, behind yourself.

You highly doubt this is a normal building on earth. Either the Fae summoned it into existence or teleported here, with here being another plane or something.

You think about where you were last, bleeding out in an ally. You can think of no logical connection between these two locations. Damn magic makes detective work hard, maybe once you've become more experienced with all of its bullshit you'll be able to sort these things out better.
>>
YEEEEEESSS, IT IS BAAAAAACK!!!!!!
Missed you to Fae-Queeny.
>>
>>21269229
Ask her if there is something else we're supposed to be doing now, that we're not going to learn magic.
>>
>>21269272
Also, try to reach our hipster-gone-hipstercat-gone-hipsterhalfsprite telepathically.
>>
>>21269241

"Yay! I missed you too! Almost as much as I missed existing!" The Fae suddenly shouts.

You are no longer confused by these outbursts, you have excepted them as a normal part of being around the creature.

"Ok, so if I am not supposed to be learning magic what am I supposed to be doing right now?"

"Nothing! Just sit around and until I say otherwise."

"And you want me around because I am a "hero" and thus usfull"

"Yes!" She answers.

"But if I am not a hero then you wouldn't bother to have me around."

"Probably not, no."

"And a hero is a hero because he does dramatic stuff right?"

She nods excitedly, "Yes! like fighting demons to the death and rescuing fair maidens!"

You realize she is probably talking about your recent encounter.

"Ok. So if I just sit around here for a long time I will stop being a hero. . . Right?" You finish the though.

She purses her lips in thought. "I. . . Guess so?"

"So. . . What am I supposed to be doing right now?"

She opens her mouth the exclaim something then shuts it. . . thinks. . . Then says. "I'm going to send you on a quest."

You nod while opening the grimoire to the telepathic bond page. The ritual is very simple and in a moment you believe you have finished it. The only effect seems to be a sudden shady mist that rolls into the room.

"Stop that." the Fae waves her hand and the mist dissipates. "Now, I beleive you summoned some demons a while ago? I want you to slay them. Do you except my quest?"
>>
>>21269395
"It's not like I've got much of a choice. I don't suppose you have anything that could help me with that, seeing how I'm unnarmed and don't know where I am right now?"

That should be somewhat in line with the occult PI archetype we're going for.
Also, are ther no other questgoers around?
>>
>>21269436

{{To the second part of your post. It was probably a mistake hosting it this early, I'm going to be a little slow on the replies to let more people get on for a while. The first thread was also like this, and it picked up around 12 east coast time.}}
>>
>>21269463
Cool. Unsubtle bump.
>>
"It's not like I've got much of a choice. I don't suppose you have anything that could help me with that, seeing how I'm unarmed and don't know where I am right now?"

The Fae stands, "Yes yes yes! I shall grant you one boon before sending you off on this quest! You may request a weapon or tool for your journey and I shall give it to you as a talisman of your faith in me!"

"Will it come with bullets? I just bought a bunch of shells but I don't think I'm getting most of them back anytime soon" You ask.

"It will be a fully functioning weapon of its kind! Whatever that entails. So long as it is sufficiently heroic. . . This is a boon not a wish, and I have standards."

You think about it.
>>
>The Succubus reverses the ritual with immortal expertise, you must now obey her and cannot harm her.

This is my fetish.
>>
>>21269541

PI's need a magnum revolver, of course.
Or we could request Roxie be given back to us, since she's a tool in one sense of the word.
>>
quick! what's the best real/fictional shotgun you can think of? Should we go to K?
>>
>>21269587
I think she already thinks of Roxie as part of our equipment, but ensuring that we get her back or at least ensure she's safe seems like the heroic thing to do.
Also, did we ever learn to use a revolver? If not, a shotgun that doesn't need to be reloaded after avery shell may be better.

shotgun just feels like a redneck weapon we need some kind of pistol, maybe more than 1.
>>
>>21269587

"Shotgun." You finally state.

"Hmm, interesting choice. Not exactly heroic, but badass so close enough I suppose." She says while walking around the table to be before you. "Grab the grimoire." She commands.

You don't really see a reason not to, and she seems serious enough that refusing could cause conflict, so you grab it.

"Back you go!" She sings while holding up her index finger.

She thrusts it forward, poking you on the forhead, and everything goes. . . A headache inducing shade of purple/pink. Damn fairy thing.

When it clears you are sitting against a wall in an ally. Great pain emanates from your hand and cheek, letting you know that either the Fae lied about healing your injuries or she re-induced them. A large shotgun lays across your lap, steel with a smooth and shiny black, glass-like material for the handle. You squint at the handle and think you see a emblem, glowing faintly in deep green, within.

"It is my seal." A voice from above causes you to look up, seeing the Fae standing before you. "To remind you where it came from and where your allegiance lays."

You give it another look over. It is shorter than your old shotgun, only about three feet long. Honestly it actually reminds you more of a tommygun than a shotgun, ave for the lack of any kind of magazine and the lack of the classic wood grip and finish in favor of that glassy black. You look down the sights experimentally.
>>
>>21269756

"I tried to give it a style that matched your own." She explains. "Anyway, another hero is about to come after me to slay me for something I barely remember anymore, so I should probably go soon. Unless there is something else you forgot to mention."

You could continue questioning or asking things of the Fae, but it sounds like her presence may bring some possibly unwanted, possibly wanted attention. You look around and see Roxie still laying crippled on the ground a few feet from you. And a charred man struggling to his feet on the other side of the ally. The grimoire lays near you.
>>
>>21269756
>>21269763
Damn it, got here mere minutes too late. We're a detective! We need a revolver! God damn it. We're less-invulnerable if we don't use an archetype-appropriate weapon.
>>
>>21269763
Pick up the grimoire, just be safe. Then get to work carefully trying to fix the various wounds. If we take some extra time, do we get a bonus on the casting roll? Also, we need to correct Roxie ASAP; the wings fuck with disguises and the light bones are a massive liability.
>>
>>21269763
>And a charred man struggling to his feet on the other side of the ally

Our old shotty should be nearby. We should take it.

Also, see how Roxie is. Is she still injured?
>>
>>21269818
yea if we can grab out old shotgun we should and then go pawn this new one at a pawn shop. I don't want some fairy queen holding shit over my head.
>>
>>21269818
>You look around and see Roxie still laying crippled on the ground a few feet from you.
Yes. Once we fix her up, she should get our old shotgun. We really need to get her into a survivor archetype too, even if it's just the plucky sidekick who always implausibly survives with only minor injuries.
>>
So what, does the new shotgun have infinite ammo or something?
>>
>>21269848
I bet it shoots fireballs or something
>>
>>21269833
This. Although I suspect that might put her in danger of being killed later on to motivate us to fight against the threat with all we have. But at least we're safe.

Also check how much if any ammo we have for magic-shotgun.
>>
>>21269848
Only one way to find out!
>>
>>21269833
I think we should give her back a single cat trait, like cat eyes or something, just so she can cash in on the 'nine lives' archetype.
>>
>>21269869
Isn't her current butt-monkey status enough to keep her safe from death, if not from harm? Does a hipster really deserve better?
>>
>>21269908
She was turned into a cat, has nearly died a few times, and is currently maimed. I think the hipster-buttmonkey thing can only go so far. Soon she'll become a tragic character and her family members will get killed by demons or something. No, she really needs a survivor archetype, if for no other reasons than to protect innocents and to make sure we have reliable backup instead of having her get made useless mid-fight.

You ignore the Fae and move over towards Roxie. You check her pulse and find it still beating. You've read people describe pulses as "weak" before, but honestly you haven't had to do this enough times to be able to know if her current pulse is healthy or foreshadowing
death. A light appears behind you, and glancing back you see the Fae has disappeared.

You examine your own injures. Your right hand is nearly cut in half, and is almost unusable. Your right cheek is slit from the corner of your lips up to your cheekbone, making it nearly impossible to talk or, you imagine, eat and drink.

Finally, you see if you can figure out the ammo situation for this new shotgun, but fail to find any kind of loading mechanism.

You see the charred man stand and wave the barrel at him threateningly. He sits.

You continue fooling around with it, growing more and more frustrated. The hobo then makes a noise clearly meant to get your attention, and when you look up at him you see him motioning to the grimoire. You look at it and see a glowing page. Cool.
>>
>>21269940
I don't think you CAN get closer to "survivor" than with"butt-Monkey" without going "occult PI" in a gritty noir setting. And that that one's already taken.
And she's a woman. The only women in Nopir safe from the fridge are antagonists.

That reminds me, are we going to get better at magic at some point or do we have to relie on the wackjob hobo to do magic with a bonus to the result?
Didn't the Fae say Roxie would be a better Warlock? Does that mean she gets a bonus to her rolls too?
>>
>>21270034

You feel your hand close back up and close and open it experimentally, feeling no pain. You poke at your cheek with your tongue and find it similarly effectively healed. A thin red line is left on your hand which you can only assume means a scar on your face.

The hobo stands quickly, "Give it to me now! I knew it was magic! I wasn't sure when the lady showed up and struck me with lightening but you casting magic can't be an illusion! Only me casting magic and the things I made through my magic casting magic could be!" He shouts, bouncing excitedly but not moving towards you.

You look down at Roxie, last time you tried to heal her you damn near killed her. The Fae implied you weren't the best person suited for using the grimoire, perhaps you should let this guy have a shot?

Or maybe it is a better idea to not give the probably insane hobo who stole your shotgun the grimoire of incredable power. He'd probably do something dumb with it anyway, like try to summon the eldritch lord or something.

Oh, wait, it didn't.

You ignore the hobo and do the ritual again.

Roxie's eyes flash open. She inhales sharply and punches at your face, but you successfully lean back out of her reach.

She whimpers and curls into the fetal position for a few seconds.

"What are you doing?" The hobo asks, either scared or disgusted, you cannot tell.

"Healing her." You say.

The hobo seems angry. "Yah, that's what they always say. Then its pills and 'therapy'". Confirming to you that he has some kind of disorder."

"Just back off." You respond, waving the shotgun again.

Eventually Roxie lets out a sigh and rolls over.

"What happened. . . I'm not a cat. . ." she sits up "That fucking spryte gave me wings!"

Looks like she is ok.

She also told me you're better at magic than me."

yeah, that's what I was saying

>>
You recount the events of the past few hours to Roxie and stand up and take inventory of the situation.

You are currently wearing a tan overcoat with a few shells, a smartphone, and your wallet tucked in. Also a fedora you agreed to wear to appease a spryte, and you hold a probably magic shotgun with unknown potential.

Roxie is standing again, looking like a normal human with fairy wings and, you just now notice, golden eyes with slightly vertically stretched pupils. She is also wearing some kind of skimpy human sized fairy armor that looks entirely out of place on earth.

The hobo is wearing a t-shirt and shorts. he has long and frazzled hair and a few scorch marks line his face and shins. You see nothing on him, but you believe him to have your old shotgun stowed away somewhere.

There are still two demons, a warlock, and a witch after you. Possibly even a hero of some kind who has something against Mae.

You are in Salem, a great distance from your home in Tampa.

You need a plan. And also you want your old shotty. You ask the hobo about it and he guiltily produces it from under a dumpster, sliding it across the ground to you on your request.

"Now slide me the grimoire." He asks.

You roll you eyes and go back to thinking about a plan.
>>
>>21270362
We need to lure the demons somehow. The previous one had tracked us down, perhaps the others are also homing on us while we're standing right here.

Ask hobo his name.
>>
>>21270362
Well, it's good that Roxie still has the cat eyes. That means a great deal. Our next move should be offering the vagrant some healing. It would be nice if we could fix his broken mind too. After that, we need to get Roxie less fragile and less conspicuous.
>>
>>21270362
Didn't we have transportation magic?
Otherwise get suitable clothes for Roxie, fill the hobo in on our quest and offer Roxie to use the Grimoire to cast control form on herself.
Do we have enough money for transportation?
>>
>>21270407
Eh, the spryte form might offer other unknown advantages.
Also anyone think we got that eye spell for a reason? Maybe using it will uncover something important or lead the demons to us by giving them our sight.
>>
>>21270440
No reason not to leave the spryte form otherwise intact. Just no wings and sturdier bones. Flying is too conspicuous, and she's too fragile.
>>
>>21270440
it's likely the fae unlocked it to aid us in tracking the demons down. letting the demons see what we see is probably a bad thing however. yanno, demons.

"She didn't sa. . . Okay, sure. Thanks. Do you know anything about magic? Aside from what is written in the notes of this book?"

"Oh yes, like I said I am the arch-magus of earth." He answers

You don't give him the benifit of the doubt. But ask "do you need healing?"

"NO!" He shouts.

"physical healing. . . for your burns." You explain.

"Oh. . . yes, yes I do."

You cast on Sours. He tilts his head slightly as his skin seems to boil then smooth.

"That was agonizing." He says dispassionately.

You hand the grimoire to Roxie who casts the same ritual on herself. She seems to do so with unnatural grace, performing the motions with the jarring yet controlled intensity of a violinist. As her form begins to shit, you note that the shift seems more natural, more gradual, than normal. Before long the wings are gone and her pupils have regained a normal shape, though remain golden.

She hands you back the book.

"Okay then. . . I guess that is about it." You state.

Now to figure out what to do towards taking out those demons.
>>
>>21270594
Suggest that she might want to make here eyes a bit more cat-like, just for archetype reasons.

Anyway, the way I see it, we have three options:

1. Wait for the demons to find us, make sure we've got a good ambush waiting for them.
2. Try to track down the demons and get the jump on them before they get the jump on us.
3. Get resupplied and back to base, then go for 1 or 2.

What do you think, guys?

We could consider casting Eldritch Eye as that would help with investigating the whereabouts of the demons, warlock, and witch. As we are an occult P.I., we may have a casting bonus to this particular spell.

"Any ideas?" You ask your party.

"Give me the grimoire." Sours recommends.

"We need to get back to someplace significant. It probably helps with magic, and right now we still have a lot of bases to cover with our abilities, like transportation. So I'd say either back to the bar or the warlock's place." says Roxie.

You nod. "The warlocks may even have other grimoires or magic stuff stashed around there. And we know for fact that they have functioning circles for summoning angels and stuff if we get attacked. We could set up a trap there, and they will probably return to it eventually to fall into said trap. Lets do it." You say.

"I'm coming." Sours adds.

"Sure."

You head off back to the warlocks place.

Let's be real for a minute. We need Sours to have better judgement. Not necessarily fix his mind (which he doesn't consider broken) but just something to make him stable enough to be trustworthy. Let's try to find a spell in the grimoire for that. Yes, I know, that spell will probably only appear when Sours is the only one left standing, he's the party's only hope, and he's too far gone to think of something productive to do. Still, worth a shot now at least.
>>
You sling your old shotty over your shoulder (and inside your overcoat) after loading a shell into it. The magic shotty fits ok into a inner pocket, so long as you remember to correct its weight with your elbow occasionally.

There isn't anything to be done about Roxie's attire you guess, and she catches a lot of odd stares from the passers. They probably just assume she is some kind of witch cosplayer, not a extremely uncommon sight in this town.

Eventually you make it back to the old house the warlocks were in. You stand outside and look into the windows, but see nothing of note.

It occurs to you that it may be worth trying out Eldritch Eye right now to scan the building, but you are unsure of who to have cast it. Roxie has shown herself to have some kind of talent, but that could be only for certain spells. Perhaps you are the one with a talent for this spell, or perhaps Sours is actually a competent wizard.

Or perhaps it is better not to risk the ritual.
>>
>>21270823
why don't we just ask sours what he knows how to do
>>
>>21270859

he doesn't know what he can do. When he first got the book he knew no spells that Leet didn't know though, so while letting him do stuff will probably unlock spells associated with his personality I don't think he actually knows anything off the bat. Though apparently he gets a universal +5 to magic for being insane.

Have Roxie cast eldritch eye before approaching the warlock lair. Might warn us about traps and her golden eyes should give a bonus.

>>21270823
Nah, that might antagonize him a lot. Instead give him an introduction to the stuff we learned about magic and what has happened so far.

Remember that should he get his hands on the grimoire either because we want him to or for some other reason WE will control him and can make him useful despite being batshit insane, but only as long as it doesn't go to much against his nature (i.e. helping the people who tried to fix him and kept thzreatening him with shotguns).

I have a feeling that seeing unexplained magic in a warlock lair is going to be confusing.
>>
You cast the ritual and half your vision become obscured by a faint blue glow.

The house looks the same, but the basement is alive. It crawls with a misty black aura, dots like dark red stars spotting throughout. You can see circles of gold, red, and florescent in a pattern that you recognize to be the summoning circle layout. There are also lines of deep, dry red along the walls. Lightning bolts of colorful energy arc from one of the red circles, reaching beyond your vision to the south. You wander if anyone on the east coast of the united states with magic vision could see that line of malevolent energy.

Finally, you see a candlelike flame flickering at the basement's corner. Cackling red energy, weak, but there.

This is all you see before the blue glow slowly fades away.
>>
>>21271104
Is our homecity in the south?

Otherwise the flickering light might be a dying survivor, we should hurry up and try to help, but be wary for traps.

ALSO: You take the time to glance at your magic weapon and your allies. The Fae's shotgun glows a florescent green, and a glyph of the same color hovers perpetually above it. The base has florescent pink tendrils reaching from it towards your torso, and looking at yourself you can see that they appear to grip your heart.

Roxie glows faintly purple/pink, and you note that with this vision you can see wings on her back and a cat between her feet.

Sours seems non-magic at first, but watching him a few seconds reveals little sparks of blue energy leaping across his brain.

south is the direction of homecity (tampa)

You enter the house with care, making your way down to the basement.

The circle that shot lightning across the horizon is the same circle you remember the succubus step through. You look around to see if you can identify the writing method and see permanent marker. You grab the marker and draw a line a across a bunch of the runes, hoping for the best.

While looking about the room you also notice that it is painted with runes of blood. You trace the drips on the floor over to the corner you saw the flame in, and see a circle-bound imp tearing at the flesh of a mostly gone body in robes. It watches you wordlessly, not bothering to stop.

There are indeed other books scattered about the room, mostly about occult history, and a few seem to have actual rituals in them. Though the manner in which they were tossed aside and the fact that the book was clearly factory published makes you doubt their power.

You point your newest shotty at the imp and pull the trigger.

You feel your mind raked, not painfully, as though being scanned over by a foreign force. You mind locks on the memory of the only offensive magic spell you know and as the slug streaks forth you see emerald flames tailing it. The imp is knocked into the invisible wall behind him, a large hole in his chest. Green liquid spills like blood from the wound, setting him and the ground around him aflame. Over the course of the next minute his corpse is reduced to fine white ash.

You feel a little dizzy.

You look back at the circle and contemplate how better to erase it. The You don't have the means to erase the permanent marker, but you image that just scribbling over the whole thing in the same marker so that the runes are invisible would have the same effect. You bend down and begin your sabotage. Roxie and Sours aid you after they find additional markers.

"That isn't how you do it." You hear a new voice say from behind you.

You spin around, drawing your magic shotgun, to face the speaker.

It is a knight. A man, probably early twenties, wearing some kind of fancy plate armor. White cloths are visible under this light plating, with a same color cape dragging behind him. A longsword is drawn in his hand, pointing at you from nor more than a step away. A small steel shield is between your shotgun and his torso, though he doesn't seem particularly worried about your weapon. A guitar (lute?) or something is strapped to his back, and a crossbow to his hip.

You blink.

"Who are you?" You ask.

"Jason. What is your affiliation with this place, the weapon you hold, and the fairy that accompanies you."

"What about me?" Sours asks.

The knight smiles, "Sorry, I didn't mean to marginalize you."

"or so he thinks. Personally, I think he is just insane. Also, before you ask, no, I did not want to become Faerie Queen's servant but at the time, it was the best course of action." You finish.

". . . Ah." He lowers his sword, but leaves his shield raised.

"Well I am hunting Mae, who must be the Faerie Queen you refer to. In a recent jaunt in my home plane she transformed my. . . fiance into a statue as payment for her roll in helping us defeat. . . It isn't important. What is important is that I kill her so that the curse can be broken."

"Yes, the Faeries do do that transform stuff a lot don't they," you say, standing, "Like I said the fairy that accompanies me isn't actually a fairy, though I am pretty sure the hobo actually is a hobo."

You decide not to mention the grimoire.

"Would you like me to break the circle?" The knight asks. "It seems to be actively providing the demon it summoned with a siphon to hell's power. Breaking it will stop that, weakening the demon, I think. Really Maria handled all the magic." He walks to the circle and looks down at it. He takes carves some kind of symbol into the center of the circle with the tip of his sword.

"It is a holy rune, hell's power won't pass through it." He explains.
>>

"What is the bouzouki for?" Roxie asks. You have no idea what the word means, but she motions at the guitar thing.

"Oh, I'm a bard. You know, creates magic by changing the atmosphere of a situation through music? Like how background music is used in plays, only effecting the way magic sees things rather than the audience."

Roxie seems excited by this.

"That's awesome. I didn't even think of doing it like th. . ."

A red glow appears near the entrance of the room. Five women and a man stand there now. Three imps at their feet.

"Asshole!" One of theme screams at you.

You wait for the knight to engage before firing. He seems like the heroic type, it should be easy for you to fade into the survivor archetype for this battle.

The woman who called you an asshole eyes the knight cautiously, three of the other women turn into Erinyes. The last woman, who you assume to be the witch, eyes the succubus nervously, the warlock with the eye-patch focuses on you and your allies.

"This is no place for you hero" The succubus begins, "go back to your own world, you don't know what kind of chaos you could cause here."

"Less than you will without me here." Jason replies, still pointing dramatically at her with his sword and taking a long step forward. You can see the hesitation on the succubus' face. You imagine people like Jason are fairly formidable foes to people like the demons, who are basically asking to be slain.

You take the time they speak to holster your magic weapon and draw your old shotty.

The Erinyes all have swords out, and they dash forward.

You begin firing. The succubus steps back into the stairway as the Erinyes dash forward, so you shoot for them. Your first shot hits one right in the torso, throwing her to the ground. You then notice the warlock casting, and fire for him and the witch hoping to get both with spread.

The witch holds out a hand and the pellets seem to curve away from her, as do the pellets intended for the warlock. Unfortunately for the warlock, pellets curving around the witch hit him instead, sending him tumbling into the wall behind him.
>>
The hero steps forward and engages the two standing Erinyes. It looks exactly like so many sword fights you have seen in movies, he agility dodges and parries their blows while occasionally getting in hits of his own. You would say it is even going to his favor till the three imps join the fray, jumping at him and throwing off his momentum. He dispatches one imp as quickly as it arrives, but the fight from there on seems a even war of attrition.

The first Erinyes begins to stand.

The succubus steps back into the room and makes eye contact with you, then watches the knight's battle for a moment. She begins to fly at you with newly appeared red wings.

Sours is begging you for the book.

Roxie is hanging back uncertainly.

You step back while throwing Roxie the gun and a handful of shells. As you take out the magic shotgun and point it at the charging demon, you let the grimoire fall to the floor and prepare to kick it to Sours as soon as you've killed the succubus, not wanting to throw off your aim or waste more time. You fire as soon as you feel confident in your aim.

A green slug moves towards the demon fast than you can follow. It seems as though the succubus swoops into its path, the shell ripping one wing straight off and lighting her back on green fire. She litterally front flips onto her feet and continues striding at you. Slowly.

You fire again and feel your head growing heavier. You think you see the demon smirk. Your shot seems way off this time. What were you thinking? You aren't that dizzy from the shotgun's magic.

The succubus continues striding forward. The rest of the combat fades into background noise as you struggle to maintain your aim on her, firing again when you could have sworn she was right down your sights, only to see the shot hit the wall without effect.

She is alight with green fire, but she doesn't burn. The glare is blinding, you can see only her silhouette striding towards you.

You are Ted Sours, arch-magus of earth! You have obtained the grimoire by dive-tackling it out from under the very clearly high Leet. He loses his balence and falls as you pick up the grimoire and run from the demon. You turn to find that the demon has apparently lost all intrest in Leet and now strides at you. Slowly, you red, demonic form wreathed in green fire.

That's stupid of her, she should really move faster.

You look down at the tomb recalling almost instantly all the rituals as you glance at them. With so many circles around, you could cast any of the easily!

A clawed red hand grips the top of the book.

"Don't worry, I'm not going to take it. I'm not going to be another toy for fucking Eleraim to play with."

She withdraws her hand and now holds a transparent copy of the book.

"See? Now, why don't you help Leet out there, hm?" She says, moving closer to you.

You look at Leet, he is standing and still firing, but no longer at the succubus that was once before him. You look at the knight and see him struggling to kill the remaining Erinyes and Imp, the other demons at his feet. But he now also struggles against a barrage of green fire.

You have no idea why he is doing that, or why you should help him. And you certainly aren't going to help him just because this succubus asked you to.

She looks at you with confusion.

You see Roxie slam Leet in the head with the butt of her shotgun, then aim at the succubus, shouting for you to move.

The succubus looks at her and asks her to put the toy down. Roxie does.

You look at the knight. He is now invisible, hidden by the tall emerald flames he has fallen into, and which a single Erinyes runs with panic out of.

The succubus has a copy of the grimoire. You need to stop her. Leet is down, Roxie is being stupid, and the knight is hiding.

You flip back to celestial, bad book.

You begin chanting, the succubus looks at you and tells you to stop. You think she is very silly.

She seems to catch on to her mistake about the time the circle begins to glow.

Man you wander what happens when someone tries to do a summon with so many circles in the room. Ha, probably nothing bad, besides its not like you have any past event to look back on as a reminder. Still, you can't help but feel some kind of supernatural sense of irony, almost like you are repeating the exact mistake that got everyone into this whole mess with demons and shit.

Huh,

Of course such an idiot would have to lack improvization skills to make a mistake like accidentally triggering all the circles in the room at once, and a arch-mage wouldn't be caught dead being so foolish. The succubus grabs you by the throat and begins choking you. You attempt to tell the Celestial to help, but can't force words through.

You hear a thundering bang, and the succubus cries out in pain. You drop to the ground.

"Kill the demons, please." You ask.

The wings unfurl. A adrogenous humanoid is at the center. Its flesh is pale as snow, its eyes pools of liquid silver. It wears golden armor that seems to flow into robes, untraceable by the eye. A golden sword lights with silver fire in her right hand, a golden shield appears from nowhere to be held in her left. Silver flames flare from its golden halo, casting light upon its platinum hair where wings the color of dawn had shadowed them.

The succubus struggles to her knees, having fallen to the ground from Roxie's attack. She looks up at the Celestial from this position, mouth agape, as the golden sword comes to rest, gently, upon her forehead.

Her body ignites in platinum fire, and within seconds there is not even ash.

The Erinyes flies at the Celestial, black sword held high, only to meet a similar fate with no more than a gaze from the being.

Hah, I'll add a vote to that. And I guess I just meant more "The Protagonist Team".
>>
It points its sword down at the grimoire copy the succubus made. It disappears into a burst of platinum fire. It hovers onto its feet and holds its hand out to you, pal upwards.

You look down at the book.

It nods its head.

You shake your head.

It begins to step forward, but the sound of chanting causes it to turn to look at the witch, standing before a summoning circle. Before her she holds a black scroll with deep red runes.

The celestial lifts up and flies towards the witch, but not before the circle begins to glow. It pauses once it reaches the witch and looks at the circle, then at the scroll in the witch's hand.

The floor around the circle disappears, revealing a twirling inferno. A figure of darkness seems to be moving through the fire towards your world.

The celestial snatches the scroll from the witch and burns it, then points its sword at the spot that was once the center of the circle and begins to sing.

It is a very nice song, you think. Not worth crying over, like that silly Roxie is reacting. You look down at the grimoire. You must find a way to save it while the winged magic book nazi is preoccupied.

You open the portal and step through, then notice Roxie is still staring at the angel and grab her and Leet yourself, pulling everyone into the desolate landscape.

The portal isn't closing.

You have no where to go so you just cross your legs and sit down, looking through the portal to see how things go with the angel and the Devil.

The portal closes. The angel stands in a circle looking surprisingly relieved for such a otherwise expressionless creature. The circle glares again, and you realize the witch had been chanting a second spell under the angels song, binding the angel to the circle. She looks at you through the portal before it closes.

Ooh, you also think you know how to do that clone thing the succubus did now. Cool

"Good work." You tell her as you walk into the tower. She walks out to drag Leet in after you, but he knocks her hand away with a groan.

"Where did the knight and lady go?" He asks.

"They died." Roxie answers.

"Damn." Leet responds. "I think I have a concussion, that demon hit me hard."

You are Erik Leet!

You look around. You are in some kind of tower, probably the one in the book.

The room is well furnished, If you had to guess you would say it was a room for entertaining guests. A piano and standing string instrument of some kind sit in a corner, and many couches, chairs, and tables dot the floor. A staircase curves upward to the next floor, and a couple doors can bee seen on the far walls.

"So what now?" Roxie asks

"Explore" You answer

Should you explore freely, just getting to the point of where everything is, or should you explore systematically going from room to room looking about?

"Lets split up." Spoils suggests.

"No." You and Roxie deny.

You decide you will explore carefully. You find that the bottom floor contains a kitchen as well, and that the other door is locked. The kitchen contains cabinets full of unspoiled food that you are fairly sure is supposed to spoil.

You begin to head up the stairs.

The second floor appears to be a art room. The walls are lined with museum peices of unassessable value. Many of the peices are armor or weapons, with a few bits of jewelry. There are also skulls of great , dragonlike creatures. There are three doors here. The farthest right leads to a fairly large library. Not what you would call huge, but much bigger than anything you've seen in a house before. The far middle is locked, and the far left is locked, though you can hear noise from within, someone tapping their foot?

Continue or investigate.
>>

You successfully cast the ritual, and magical intuition fills your mind.

The whole tower glows, but you are now capable of sorting out the normal glow from the abnormal glow. Inside the room is a demon, you believe a succubus. Interestingly, its aura is not the chaotic lightening or fire you are used to from demons, but a very structured system of twisting auras and magics. You believe the succubus to be magically enchanted or contained somehow. The lock requires some kind of password. . . Hm. . . You scan through the grimoire and note a page with the same exact aura.

Before the vision fades you glance at the middle door. Beyond it are 4 very very powerful auras. Transportation magic, portals.

The vision fades.

Spoils mouths "Why me."

You mouth "Now." and hand him the book so that he can help if the succubus does the mind control thing again.

He opens the door.

Inside is a androgynous human-looking figure wearing a solid red butler suit and top hat. It seems that before you walked in it was just staring at the floor, taping its foot, but now it looks up at you with surprise.

"Who are you?" It asks.

Well, if you're allowed to use the request interface to add tags and stuff, you guys decide if that works. I don't know Unknown Armies well enough to judge for myself (though if it is, now I really want to. This is bloody fun).
>>
>>21274632
Unknown Armies is more about three separate but intertwined magic systems. The first and, I suppose, truest is that of the Avatars. Avatars are aligned with a certain Archetype and gain powers from it. An Archetype is someone who's ascended in order to fill a role based on the subconscious consensus of all humans. Here's an example of one:

http://ua.johntynes.com/content_comments.php?id=922_0_3_0_C2

Then there are Adepts; these are people who are so bugfuck nuts that they can trick reality into letting them do magic in line with their obsession. Here's an example:

http://ua.johntynes.com/content_comments.php?id=2319_0_3_0_C1

Finally, there are rituals. These are the remnants of old magic that used to be much more widespread and powerful, but have been losing power and falling out of circulation. Literally anyone can do them if they follow the steps, but they need to be followed exactly. Here's an example:

http://ua.johntynes.com/content_comments.php?id=3701_0_3_0_C3

The grimoire basically contains rituals and Leet is an Avatar of the Hero Archetype.
