You are Anon, a street fighter and North American East Coast World Warrior. Starting today you're moving from fighting off wannabes to a tournament for the right to fight at the world level. This morning you're sitting at your kitchen table with a representative from the organization, signing so many forms that your hand has started to hurt.

>previous threads here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Street%20Fighter

"Now sign here, here and here. And initial here," the woman says. You sign and initial away, praying for the end of this paperwork hell.

"Do all the World Warriors have to do this?" you ask, filling out another medical history form. You're pretty sure you've already signed this one.

"This is standard. We went over all of this with Boss Honda before you took the title from him. We tried to do it with the woman who took it from you, but she insisted we wait until the day of the fight."

"Yeah, we had an appointment to fight over it again," you say, trying to remember the last time you had a tetanus shot. "I'm kinda surprised she thought she would lose."

"Well, that's not my business," she says, pulling another clipboard out from her briefcase. "We have a few more details to work out first.First, what's your style?"

"Eskrima. Studied under the Soaring Eagle Dojo before it was shut down for being a Saikyoku front."

>field too long

"So you do Saikyoku?" she says, cocking an eyebrow.

"No, I do eskrima. Write down eskrima," you say, gritting your teeth.

"Okay. Now, what are your special moves?"

"I don't...I mostly just hit people?" you say. She sighs and sets the clipboard aside.

"I know that, but we need something for the announcers to say. It's like how saying 'he executed a perfect Flash Kick' sounds better than saying "he kicked that guy in the head" for the hundredth time in the fight. They strongly request that every fighter have two or three."

>Special moves?
>>
>>21271398
Wolverine strike. Tatsuya may have said never to talk about that day but I like to think something was learnt that day.
>>
>>21271398

That jumping hit we used on Danny and the Pillow Demon. Somehow named in honor of our spirit guide Segata Sanshiro.
>>
Alright, attack names!

Saturn Launch> When we do a Segata Sanshiro style throw
Wolverine Barrage> Attacking multiple times with such speed that our sticks appear to become extended 'claws' for a moment
Chip Shot> The golf swing style attack
A Gentleman's Reply> Projectile Reflecter
>>
>>21271484
These are lovely and better than anything I could come up with. I support these, not sure if we have any other moves. Are we counting ultras here, as well?
>>
... Is this eventually going to end up with Anon in a team with Pete and Danny vs Ellie, Belle and their eventual third member?
>>
>>21271484
I like these, except the last two should be named Free Drive and Gentleman's Reply respectively.

A chip shot barely involves swinging, and techniques starting with 'A' are wonky to talk about.
>>

"Alright. Um. Saturn Launch for when I do a hip throw." Gotta pay respect to your spirit mentor.

"What, like an ogoshi?" she asks.

"I don't know enough judo to answer that question," you say. She writes it down anyway.

"Okay, let's get two more, that'll do for now. What about some escrima stuff?"

"Free Drive for a golf-style swing. Gentleman's Reply for a thing that reflects projectiles." You briefly consider naming something after that night on the mountain with the wolverines (regardless of what you promised Tatsuya. He's playing videogames with Pete in the living room, he won't hear.) Memories start to rise to surface, memories of sharp little teeth and the horrible claws and the darkness.

Nope. Put a lid on it.

"And that's it," you say. She continues writing for a moment, then sets the pad aside with a click of her pen.

"Okay, I'll have the boys in PR give these a once-over and get back to you." She pulls out a fresh batch of forms. Your heart sinks.

"Now, money. You have a job?"

"N-not at the moment," you say. "Kind of put that on hiatus to train."

"Okay, and what did you do before that?"

"Waited tables for a bit. Did some temp gigs. Was a bowtie model once," you say.

"Yeah? You still a model?"

"Nah, it was just the once. They didn't actually take a picture of my face even, just the bowtie."

"...oh," she says, sounding kind of disappointed.

"I mean, it was a really nice bowtie," you say.

"Right," she says. "After that?"

"More temp work. Worked in a menswear section of a department store for awhile, helping fit people for suits and the like." You can hear Tatsuya crowing in triumph from the living room, Pete seems to be saying "cheap" over and over. Guess he's not doing so well.

"So you do this entire gentleman thing pretty hard, huh?" she says. "I was kinda hoping you had a job we could push, like the way we used to advertise that guy in the Air Force back in the day, you know? We haven't had a fighting gentleman in awhile, that'll do for now. Okay, now we just need a quick little press quote. What's your motivation?"

Your name is Ellie, a Kyokugen fighter. You're currently partnered with a kickboxer named Belle, trying to find a third fighter to get back into the King of Fighters circuit. With most of your contacts in the fighting community either already in teams or in Metro City, you're going to have to start from scratch.

"Alright, so how do we look for a ninja?" Belle asks. The two of you are in your kitchen. Once she realized how terrible you were at cooking she started coming by in the afternoons to train and follow up by helping you make dinner. You suspect it's mostly so you don't accidentally poison yourself. She made you a roasted chicken with baked potatoes, leaving you to make the salad.

The salad isn't great.

"I'm still not sold on the ninja," you say. "If we call ourselves the New Women's Team or whatever we're going to be defined by that forever. I want to be defined by all the ass kickings we deliver."

"Male or female, we've got to find someone," she says. "So where do we look?"

>any ideas?
>>
>>21272068
The local red-light district. You don't mess with strippers, man.
>>
>>21272068

It's simple. We put out an ad in the newspaper. "Fighter wanted for KoF team. Apply below". Then we hold auditions in the Kyokugen dojo. Whoever defeats the both of us in combat gets to join. We'll get some sparring training out of it, too.

Also, as >>21272149 mentioned, there's a bar and club in Southtown co-owned by King and Duck King (particularly, Duck King is the resident DJ). That might be a good place to start.

If we manage to get an audience with any of the original fighters (you know Terry is hanging out somewhere), ask how Mai and Andy are doing, see if they have any protege of theirs looking to prove themselves. That aside, fighters have a way of knowing the most unique folks. Just ask for a ninja, and someone is bound to show up.

Hell, if the Yokchong Market arena from Garou: Mark of the Wolves is to be believed, there's an entire Little Korea sector of Southtown. If Kim's visiting, get an audience and see if he has any students looking to compete, since we have a spot open on our team.

"Alright, we've got a few options," you say. "We can start by starting a teamfinder thread on Fightchan."

"Fightchan?" she says, skeptical. "That's...you go on Fightchan?"

"It's not as bad as its reputation," you say, suddenly embarrassed. "And we'll run ads in the paper. Open call for fighters, anyone who wants to join a King of Fighters team can come down and audition."

"Audition?" she asks.

"We fight 'em. If they're good they can join."

"Sounds...solid, actually," Belle says. "Alright, so we'll set that up for next week."

"Also we could check out King's bar," you say. "Maybe there could be strong fighters there? She's one of the original fighters in the entire tournament."

"We can check it out," Belle says, "but I think we're mostly just going to find hipsters. It's a bar, you know?"

You think it over.

"Can we fight the hipsters?"

"Sure," she says, shrugging. "Oh, here's one, we could check out Real Bout." Your face falls a bit. Real Bout is the one-on-one division of the King of Fighters in Southtown. No ranking, no divisions, just people show up once a week to watch people fight. A lot of fighters who can't cut it at a higher level of competition wind up there and never break out.

"It's...not really a great place to find fighters, is it?"

"There might be some up-and-comers honing their skills there, and they're likely not to have teammates."

"Alright, we'll check it out," you say. "One way or another, we'll find a fighter."

Anon's going to be at that paperwork for a while, and a trip to Pao Pao Cafe or King's Court (my impromptu fanname for [Duck] King's bar/club) should be fun. Also,
>Real Bout is the KoF minor leagues
That's actually pretty neat, though I imagine it ended up as such after the original fighters cleared out. No matter who you ask, Wolfgang Krauser and Geese Howard were not minor-league.
>>
>>21272346

Early Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting games suggest the name of the in-game tournament was the King of Fighters Tournament. The way I figure it is the King of Fighters tournament was the official name for the single-fighter tournament, then it switched to a three-person format under the aegis of Rugal. The three-fighter format was popular and stuck around, then the owners spun off Real Bout as a sideline. Due to the way the World Warrior and King of Fighters tournament build up to a clear winner they attract more prestige and more cash, so high-powered fighters end up in one of those two. By this point Real Bout is just a weekly tradition where you can show up and watch some fights. Like you said, it's kind of the minor leagues to the KoF's majors.

You are Anon, a street fighter and World Warrior. You're about to fight on the highest level you've ever competed on, against possibly the toughest fighter you've ever faced. Apparently this requires you to take press photos with the guy for nearly an entire hour in a dingy trailer-turned photo studio.

"Okay, now one with you two in kind of a fighting pose," the photographer says. You and your opponent - whose name you still haven't caught - both put your dukes up like old-timey boxers. The photographer snaps another four or five photos, circling the two of you. You can tell he hates it as much as you do.

"So what's your name?" you ask the guy.

Indeed, technically, the first KoF was the events of Fatal Fury 1. The Art of Fighting story is different, though, since that just details Ryo/Robert's crusade to save Yuri/oust Geese. AoF takes place before FF. Garou: Mark of the Wolves was also actually a KoF -- the full title was King of Fighters: Maximum Mayhem.

You decide to split the difference. You retrieve your sticks from your jacket and run through a few patterns quickly. Strike to the temple, strike to the ribs, strike to the knee, thrust, overhand to head, repeat for other hand, again and again until it comes naturally. When you're satisfied with the speed you switch to some defense patterns. Running like a well-oiled machine.

You exit the trailer, blinking in the light. A crowd - larger than you expeted - has gathered to line the walkways of Haggar Bridge.

The plan laid out by the TV producers is for you and Dom to fight in the middle of the street, the skyline of Metro City providing the backdrop. Road blocks have been set at both ends to stop road traffic, though per tradition peopple are allowed to stand and watch the fight. You're actually surprised at the turnout - more than you can easily count, packing the sidewalk.

Whatever else you may be, whatever the outcome of this fight, for now you're the Street Fighter of Metro City, and this town will stand behind you. You smile and wave to the crowd, they respond with an enthusiastic roar.

You finally catch sight of Tatsuya and Pete. They're front and center in the middle of the bridge. Must've been standing there for hours. You jog over, waving a bit at the crowd.

"Hey kid," Tatsuya says. "You ready for this?"

You've only got time for one question, you think. The woman from the World Warrior Organization is waving to you, trying to point to the designated starting zone.

Chae Lim and Duke were alright. Chae Lim is female Kim and I actually prefer her to the Kamen Rider fan, strangely enough, while Duke is just a big black man in a nice shirt. I sorta liked Alba's special moves, the character design not so much.

But overall, yeah, Maximum Impact's original characters were pretty terrible. I think Jivatma's only saving grace is not being pure bullshit even though he's a fighting game boss.

What I remember of Chae's story was that she was freaking out for the longest time because she's representing Kim and his dojo in the KoF, and that's a lot of pressure. Then her friends go, "Dude. You're the best out of everyone here, and you're in the King of Fighters. You're on top of the world for good reason, so chill out and do your stuff." Somehow, that worked.

"Any advice?" you ask.

"Wait, I can look this guy up," Pete says, pulling out his phone. He starts tapping away furiously.

"Trust yourself," Tatsuya says, putting his hand on your shoulder. "You're a true fighter. Now go out and show that to the world."

"T-thanks," you say. The woman from the World Warrior Organization was waving more frantically. "I have to go, they're ready to start the fight. Either way this goes down, thanks for everything."

You move back into the center of the street and take your starting position, trying to ignore the cameras. Really trying to ignore how much those things must cost if you accidentally knock one over.

"We're going live in five...four...three...two...and we're live!" one of the cameramen says.

Somewhere nearby, too far away for you to hear, an announcer wearing too much hair product was beginning his spiel. You take a ready stance, trying to see what stance Dom takes. He stands perfectly calm, one hand folded into a fist, another on top of it. If you didn't know better you'd think he was meditating.

"And now we turn to our fighters for a brief statement!" another announcer says. He's practically a clone of the first one. "Anon, you're the hometown hero, anything you want to say before the fight?"

I've mentioned it before, but Falcoon, fanartist-cum-art designer for KoF:MI, admitted that Alba Meira was his self-insert, a "cooler version" of himself. No wonder he was the lead character of MI.

To Maximum Impact's credit, it attempted to elevate Billy Kane into a legitimate threat and rival to Terry, since it takes place after Geese's death (Nightmare Geese notwithstanding).

Billy: This time I'll get you but good, Bogard!
Terry: Dude. Geese is dead, and your little sister Lilly is worried about you. Go home.
Billy: Screw you! *fight & lose* Dammit!
Terry: You gotta let it go, Billy. You're a good guy and a loyal worker, but you gotta move on, for your sister's sake.
Billy: Shut up! I swear I'll get you, Bogard!

"I hope we have a good fight that does you proud, Metro City," you say, straightening the bowtie. The crowd goes wild.

"And now Dom, the challenger, anything you want to say?"

"Thanks Mike," he says, turning on a thousand-watt smile. "I just want to tell everyone that I'm fighting tonight on behalf of Fry Yoga Studios in Boulder, Colorado. When you want real Hot Yoga, you wanna Fry!" He keeps the cheesy thousand-watt smile on and fake-laughs with the host. As the reporter backs away with the mic he takes off his jacket, revealing a shirt slathered in logos and slogans for his yoga studio. It's an ad thing for this guy. You suddenly feel all the goodwill you started to have for him draining away as you raise your sticks.

Wait.

Never mind that Dhalsim's fire breath was retconned from the super-racist "he at lots of spicy curry" to the more PC "his fire breath was a gift from Agni, Hindu god of fire," FUCK THIS GUY. If this guy claims to know the secrets of yoga while being as big a sellout as he is, he's disrespecting Dhalsim. This is the sort of thing we're actively striving to quash.

>Rush in and attack
The secrets of yoga gave Dhalsim his super reach and teleportation. Naturally, the best way to negate range is to get inside of it.

Far as I'm aware, particularly if the dialogue from SVC Chaos is to be believed (and in Dhalsim's case, I'll believe it), Dhalsim's fire breath is a divine gift. He is a pacifistic Hindu monk who fought for the sake of his village and to strive to bring inner peace out of others. After Cammy escaped from Shadoloo's clutches at the end of Alpha, Dhalsim gave her peace of mind and helped her restart her life.

No sense in letting him stretch and keep you at a distance. You dash in, swinging for his face.

He snakes a hand over your wrist and it just keeps snaking and snaking. Like his joints aren't oh god his joints can rotate 360 degrees. You want to throw up a little bit.

"Jiu Jitsu!" Pete's yelling somewhere, "He does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!"

You land with a bone-crunching impact, Dom's head bouncing against hard concrete. He goes slack for a moment, long enough for you to pull your arm free. You also notice the extent to which his limbs look like cooked spaghetti when he's limp. Add this to the nightmare pile with the Pillow Demon and what happened on Wolverine Mountain.

He's stunned, but conscious. He rolls backwards - actually rolls, his arms and legs forming into a gross little ball like this is Metroid or something - until he stands, putting his arms back into a fighting stance.

No sense letting him dictate the pace. You move in, sticks flying. He defends against the first two or three hits.

People underestimate how fast those sticks can move. You break past his guard and treat his face like it's one of those drumming games at the mall and you're a twelve year old who forgot his Ritalin.

A few seconds into this combo he starts fighting his way in, throwing wild punches. One clips you on the jaw just enough to break your flow and force you back a step. Dom leaps onto your chest, legs encircing your torso and squeezing as tightly as possible, his fists pounding on the top of your skull.

You decide to headbutt the concrete.

About halfway down, as you feel Dom contorting his body, slithering onto your back, you start to wonder why you thought this would work.

You pound your own face into the concrete pretty hard. Now firmly situated on your back, Dom tries for a triangle choke.

Give him the stick.
>>
You try to wedge something in before he gets a solid grip on your neck. Your hand and part of a stick wind up acting as a buffer. They're being crushed into your neck, but you can move them a bit, give yourself some room to breathe. It helps that Dom doesn't seem to be that good at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

You had a teacher once. He taught you to hold the sticks, he taught you the patterns, to move as calmly and smoothly as flowing water and to strike with the power of a tidal wave. He was kind of schlubby, a little on the heavy side, but none of that changed how he moved.

You remember a technique he explained once. Said it translated into something like defanging the serpent. If someone swings a weapon at you, you strike at his hand. If he kicks at you, strike at his leg. When his arms and legs hurt too much to use then you can attack his core. It's not a solution for every situation, but if you're just plain screwed by range or by circumstance it can work.

You come back to the present. If you roll to your side a little bit you can jam the butt end of your right stick into his elbow. If you're lucky he'll let go. If he's unlucky it'll break his arm. You're running out of time to come up with a more humane solution.

"That smashing my face thing? Terrible idea. Never doing it again."

Or maybe just "flubglibblipp" while our brain protests the damage it just took.

Now I want to get a helmet like Ellie had just so, when we do eventually headbutt the ground again, we won't do as much damage to ourselves.

You rack your brains for something cool. You land on an old quote from Eagle, something he said after demolishing a guy back in the 2000 tournament.

"The show must go on!" you say. "Thanks to Metro City for coming out to support me. Helmets save lives. Flarggble your waitrrgble."

"Let's get you home, pal," Tatsuya says, dragging you away from the cameras. "You did good. Just...just don't do that again."

"Flabble," you say.

That's it for now, real life calls. If I have time tonight we may get a continuation on Ellie and Belle's side of the quest, otherwise expect that tomorrow.

It's not necessarily being a berzerker. It's all about action economy: don't do more than you have to, and use only what energy is necessary. "Being a gentleman" does not equate to "being showy." Dudley was as orthodox a boxer as they come to the point where he audibly counted his punches, remember?

Well, we improved our conditioning, but we haven't quite trained to counter fighters in particular. It's not like we can case them a month ahead of time and train accordingly. At least now we know that Anon needs to improve his ground game, or at least prevent a ground game from ever coming up. Also, "defanging the viper" is as sound a tactic as they come.
>>
>>21274887

I'm starting to wonder if Anon can't do anything without it going hilariously terrible for at least part of it. I think it's funnier that way.

Could've been worse, at least we didn't get that relentless wave of ones when it would have screwed us.

Like most any pro fighting gamer who goes to EVO will tell you, the best way to learn and get stronger is to get bodied until you get better. "Stay free or level up," as it goes. There's no shame in taking a couple licks before we figure it out and pull ahead. I'm just waiting for the day Anon scores his first perfect.
>>
>>21275461
Only problem with this logic is that even if Anon gets better and better, his effectiveness in battle is determined via random dice roll, so no matter how good Anon is or how much he trains, there's always a chance for catastrophic failure, even where it should not, under any circumstance, happen. A very high one, apparently.

There's also idiot decisions like headbutting the floor, which get picked just because they're funny. On one hand, I love that we're using Eskrima and trying hard to be gentlemanly even while we do those things. But on the other hand, sometimes I wish Anon had been an Ikari Warriors fan, mixing crazy, wrestling and violence, maybe with some military paraphernalia thrown in as well. It just feels like it'd fit our general strategy of "KILL IT DEAD but don't go berserk" really well.
>>
Motherfuck, I was catching up (AKA Reading all the threads because I am a newcomer) and in doing so missed this one. MOTHERFUCK

When they said "headbutt the floor," I took it metaphorically as "hold the guy in front of our head so he doesn't move, and powerbomb him into the asphalt, holding him steady with our head and arms the whole way down."

Apparently, it was taken more literally than I anticipated.

I might have written that part badly. The intent was to just whip your head forward and slam him into the floor, crushing his gut with STRONK HEAD.

He was expecting that and scrambled around to your back, meaning you accidentally just slammed your face into the concrete. Would have worked if Anon had thought to grab and hold him first, but he's got no experience grappling.

As far as someday getting a perfect win, depends on a lot of stuff. Tomorrow's opponent may be an opportunity for that, depending on how the fight goes. You'll see when it happens.

We had some really good rolls when we were rolling for that guy's name! I believe in us, /tg/.

One of these days we need to hash out exactly what boards Fightchan has. More importantly, its /tg/ equivalent.
