[[As promised, starting this week's thread with some Q&A.]]

>Anon asks: Was the village once part of a greater civilization but kind of... splintered off? Like a paper mill seems an odd thing to have in an isolated village.

Good question! In fact, the village was once part of a greater colonization effort. Osyki's read snippets of this here or there, but nothing about where that effort originated from, or what became of the other colonies.

>Anon asks: Did Walther want to become a Totemist's apprentice when he was younger, but get rejected?

Walther's never really wanted anything to do with the Totemist. He's got his reasons for distrusting you; your master was hardly a paragon of virtue.

>Anon asks: Are you going to ever have any timeskips, or like gloss over peaceful periods? Because it seems like it's only been two weeks at most since Aryen died.

In fact, after we finish up this hike with Elana I was planning on calling a vote for a timeskip. As players, you should always feel free to suggest one of those and the actions that take place within if you feel the narrative is moving too slowly. I'm really just here to write your story.

>Anon asks: Does Osyki have any childhood friends besides that one Slayer? Any rivals?

Osyki wasn't really the kind of kid to make rivals, but he certainly does have a lot of childhood friends. We've seen this briefly showcased with Ried the Bowyer's apprentice. Living in such a small village, Osyki's basically familiar with all of its inhabitants. They just aren't introduced until they become relevant to prevent cast bloat.

HELL YES
TOTEM TIME
>>
>Anon asks: What did Overwake teach Osyki that he hasn't given at least the gist to Quinn and Terra? Like sometimes it feels like all the mysticism was just some obfuscation on our master's part.

While a good part of Ayren's training was needlessly arcane obfuscation, it wasn't all smoke and mirrors. While Quinn and Terra are capable of crafting basic totems, they haven't the spiritual stamina or reserves that Osyki has developed from years of ritualistic training. If you recall, Osyki can keep a seemingly unlimited number of Foci bound to his form at once, and can swap them out fairly rapidly. If Quinn attempted to maintain as many commitments and perform as many changes as Osyki does on a regular basis, he'd likely pass out.

>Anon asks: What prompted the decision to not even attempt period dialogue? I feel like the modern way the characters speak to each other is one of the many enjoyable things I find with your writing.

I always feel a little silly writing "FOR SOOTH, YOUNG MAIDEN, 'TIS I THE MIGHTY TOTEMIST". You'll notice that I take names and beings from multiple areas of the world and mythologies to fuel the Totemist quest universe. The most important thing to me is the reader's enjoyment of the story. I feel as though it's much simpler to just cut to the story and the real interaction of the characters in a comprehensible manner than it is to try to dress up the dialogue in archaic language and needlessly antiquated expressions.
>>
>Anon asks: Back when we went to chit chat with the stone emperor and we learned of the fight against the Magus, it was recalled as having the form of a dragon when it came to attack our master. When we fought it, it had a humanoid shape. Since Modi is more knowledgeable about the nature of dragons than we are, could he tell us if the Magus is a dragon that can shapeshift, or a human that learned to become a dragon, or something else entirely?

This is certainly something that you could ask! Remember, though, Modi charges a price for his counsel. You'll have to go out and murder something before you can speak with him.

>Anon asks: Has Osyki reached the age where he grows facial hair yet? How pathetic would any attempts at growing a beard be?

...Osyki doesn't want to talk about it. he looks better clean shaven, anyway.

>Anon asks: So if we made a feral binding with like... just a bear or a boar or something, would it still make enhancements like binding a raptor? I mean are beasts like raptors, stalkers, y'kree etc just considered to be animals?

Yes! Raptors and Ykrees are considered to be perfectly mundane animals in the Totemist Quest 'verse. Any spirit can be bound into a Focus. The more magic a being has, however, the more potent the focus will be. You'll note that the Bone Warden (now earth elemental) and the Rock Turtle Foci tend to produce much more potent results.

>Anon asks: Can one simply summon an Avatar, as one would a spirit?

Not with any ritual currently known to Osyki or Ayren. That's not to say that it's impossible, of course.
>>
>Anon asks: If one of us didn't post a question, were you going to have Thane eventually start giving hints that there might be something a bit off about him?

Was I going to have a spirit whose powers revolve around secrets and obfuscation hint at something? No, probably not.

>Watashiwa asks:Totemism: What does Oyski know about the art? Not the practical stuff, but the history? Famous practitioners, major events, development of the art, names to know in Totemism. Famous spells or bindings?

Osyki's got very little knowledge as to the roots of Totemism. Ayren's the only other person he's ever known who's had any major exploits via the art, and the only person he knows of besides Ayren to practice the art at all was the Totemist who died when Ayren took over. He's got a bit of practical knowledge regarding the roots of pact-making and feral binding, and he knows the story of the First Pact, which will be told in a thread very soon.

>Watashiwa asks: Could we get a list of crafting knowledge that Oyski has asides from binding and totem making? Potion lore and alchemy, that sort of thing? What else can Oyski do (and what did Aryen's death prevent him from teaching us?)

Osyki is very skilled with alchemy and potion lore as a matter of course in the crafting of Totems. He's a decent hand with woodworking and carving, though nowhere near as skilled as the village craftsmen. He knows how to sew and draw, and he's got a fairly impressive command of written language.
>>
[[And now, as promised, I'll pose a vote. I'll leave it up for a short while so late comers to quest night have a chance to chip in their opinions as well. The question is this:

After Osyki takes his walk with Elana, would you like to see a timeskip? And if so, to how far in the future? I would, of course, stop this acceleration for any major events, so there is an upper cap on how far I'm willing to zoom, but I get the feeling a lot of readers have been feeling like the story has stagnated somewhat lately, so I'm offering this option up.]]
>>
>>21291979
I'm ambivalent about a timeskip: I'd prefer you do one only if you feel it will help you to better tell the story you want to tell. Basically, you've taken on an awesome ride so far, and I trust your judgement to steering us along to cool places
>>
>>21291979
Maybe around a month or so?
Enough time to replace hopefully most of Ayren's totems, and if not finish, at least make good progress on that river we're digging.
Not skipping at all is fine as well.
>>
>>21291979
Is a timeskip really the best thing for us right now? We've got a ton of stuff on our plate at the moment, while these things may slow us down they are necessary and need our full attention. I don't feel right leaving the river construction or first contact with the other settlement to chance. I'd do a timeskip on smaller actions like replacing the rest of the defunct totems or training with Quinn and our lil' temist-to-be.
>>
>>21292027
I second this notion. As a writer myself, I prefer to trust in the knowledge and judgement of the person at the reins.
You know what plot twists are ahead, you know which obstacles we're like to face. Therefore, you're the best person to judge whether the story calls for that sort of device or not.

That being said, if you'd like a good example of how to do timeskips in a quest, I'd recommend taking a look at Frost Giantess Quest and the original Dragon Quest, if you haven't already read them yourself. Both had a large narrative emphasis on improvement over long periods of time mid-way through.
For Maya it was after she returned from the war, for Azaladon it was after he was exiled from Freeport.
>>
>>21291979
Most of our immediate future, barring a crisis, is going to be making fucktons of totems of every type for the village, some hunting trips with Quinn, training the hell out of Terra and taking Elana on dates.

I'm fine with time skipping training, making the river, and making totems, but the first contact thing is rather important.

So skip enough to get some of that out of the way but not enough to gloss over the important plot stuff.

Guy planning on running the offshoot quest here.

There's been a snag.

While playtesting my scenarios solo, I found that player choice didn't matter on a large scale.

While there were multiple ways to solve each encounter, overall the player's choice didn't matter beyond that.

On a world scale, the player's actions were always "Find Encounter -> Optimally resolve Encounter -> Find new Encounter". The only choice the player really had was that they could choose to deviate from this formula and play the game poorly, and that isn't really choice at all.

I need to redesign things so that the player has relevant, meaningful choice on a scale of where to go in the world and what large-scale goals they can achieve.

It'll be some time.
>>
>>21291979
I'd prefer no skipping.

We've got animals to bind, totems to make, more meditation to undergo.
We've got Mayhews to escort, Humans to interact with.
Plus, we never did get around to making any hunting totems that we'd carry around with us to make us better hunters.

For example:

* Divert a River through the town - from the snowmelt, to Lady Boand's pond.
** Along the inner wall. Needs overflow pools, Grates to stop predators, and Totems to bring in fish.
* Provide Thane with a cup of your blood boiled and reduced to a paste at the new moon.
* Make more useful totems
* Continue the log/journal of how to Totem
* Harvest more totem materials
* Bind more creatures
* Scout the Southwestern people, to determine if contact is worthwhile.
* Escort Elder Mayhew to the Southwest people
* Arrange for a permanent safe passage through the forest and the swamp, to the Southwest people. (If trade or contact is viable)

>At any given moment we have a minimum of one crisis
"IM A MAGUS RAWR"
>two major plot threads
Irken range conflict
People to the Southwest
> three avenues of research
Looking into those drawers or the behemoth lair to see what Aryen left
Totem design and creation
Learning how to Element
> two apprentices
Quinn, Terra
> Elana
Elana
> Ambassadorship to the spirits
Sylvia, Swamp Mother, Lady Boa, Mountain spirit, Rain spirits, Thane.
> Replacing totems
Always need more totem.
> And any other number of things going on
Etc.

We've got plenty to do.
>>
>>21292296
You make a compelling argument.
Yeah I'd say we certainly won't run out of things to do.
>>
WHOA WHOA WHOA! Diarca's back?! Good thing I skipped out on working tonight! Nice to see some questions answered; wasn't quite expecting some of those answers.

Debating time skips: I'm not against them in theory as much as in practice; they're an easy way for authors to develop the story or characters without actually doing the development. That's not much of a problem in an RPG since characters by definition can't be everywhere to see character development happen, but it's a bit galling in a game with such a small scope.

That said, you could easily move things along faster. Oyski could spend a few days or weeks focusing on the totem backlog and all you'd have to do is say "And then Oyski made the following totems for the following people" and that would be fine.
>>
>>21292319
Canon it hasn't been that long since Aryen died. What, a month, at most?
Players have a way of burying their nose into plot threads and having a quest log full of shit they never get around to completing.
At the current rate, if we spend an entire month working on things, we'll have even MORE work to do afterwards.
>>
>>21292404
Are you the awesome Anon that made the original to-do list? Probably would be worth updating and pastebin'ing it.

Also hah, isn't 21292296 partly from one of my posts from a few threads back?
>>
So is there anything else to do with Elana around here? I know we've got to get back to the village, but is there anything else interesting to do or see while we've got Elana with us?
>>
[[Right ho. With that decision made, we press onward.]]

She frowns. "Well, I guess you'll just have to keep me safe, won't you?"

You chuckle. "Haven't I done that enough lately?"

She shakes her head. "Nope! Apparently not."

You glance behind you, snapping your attention to a sudden noise. A small squirrel-like animal freezes as you see it and darts off, six legs propelling it quickly across the ground.

"Can't get rid of me that easily, Osy."

You return your attention to Elana, only to find her moving to rest her head against your shoulder. "Do you ever get the sense that your whole life is leading up to one moment in time? Just, one critical decision that gives you the chance to make difference, like the path of your life is knotted in one spot?" she asks suddenly, her temple pressed against your shoulder.
>>
>>21292874
If that question comes from your personal experience, I envy you. It seems like I can't get rid of the knots fast enough before new ones appear.
>>
>>21292874
"Not particularly.

I haven't had an end of critical decisions that change the lives of myself and the people around me in the past week. I am frightened to think of there being a bigger knot than what I've seen so far."
>>
>>21292874
>Do you ever get the sense that your whole life is leading up to one moment in time? Just, one critical decision that gives you the chance to make difference, like the path of your life is knotted in one spot?
I thought that once.
Then it happened.
and it happened AGAIN.
So, that sort of disproves the "only one moment" thing.

First point? Becoming Aryen's apprentice. You wouldn't believe how hard it was to get the man to notice me.
Second point? My first binding. Man, what a rush that battle was. I prepared hard, and I was victorious.
Third point? Hasn't happened yet, but I imagine it will be with you.
>>
>>21292874
"Yes and no. My life has felt like nothing but a series of knots since master passed on, and I can never quite untie them fast enough before more show up. Some are small and manageable with time. Some are so large and tangled I can't even begin to imagine how to begin untying them. But I seem to keep getting passed such things somehow."
Put an arm around her, "I think perhaps it's because I have such a beautiful girl who keeps inspiring me."
>>
>>21292874
"Sometimes, I suppose. Then the next big moment comes. And then the next, and the next. Our lives aren't so simple, especially now. Why? What's wrong?"
>>
"I thought that once," you say, "and then it happened. And it happened AGAIN. So, that sort of disproves the "only one moment" thing. I haven't had an end of critical decisions that change the lives of myself and the people around me in the past week, but I seem to keep getting passed such things somehow."

You put your arm around her.

"I think perhaps it's because I have such a beautiful girl who keeps inspiring me."

She blushes and elbows you, but not hard.

"Why?" you ask. "What's the matter?"

She shrugs. "I've been thinking about this seal and the thing that tried to kidnap me. It just seems like a very large thing. I've never had any aspirations bigger than being the village's healer, and now I've got this in my lap. It's frightening, but I also feel as though it's the gateway to something bigger."
>>
>>21293086
You know what's really big?

Cave Devourers.

Behemoths.

Maybe we'd better wait a little before we tackle the "gateway to something bigger", mmkay?

We should tackle something a little smaller. Like {tacklehug Elena}
>>
>>21293086
"That's very likely true. But I promise you this, Elana. Whatever you choose, however long it takes for you to come to a decision, I'll support you. I'll do everything in my power to ensure that no matter the outcome, it's one that you're happy with.
You're important to me, Elana."
>>
>>21293086
"Well that is a big thing. Whatever decision you make with that will change the lives of the entire village and will possibly effect much more than that.

No matter what path you choose you'll be magnificent, I'll support you no matter what."
>>
>>21293086
"Who knows? It could change everything. Unsealing it could make you so incredibly powerful that spirits and nations all over the world would kneel before you. It might let you heal disease and suffering for everyone, end war and hatred forever--but it would also make you a target. Not just the Magus, but kings and greater spirits would war over you. Some would want to worship you, some to kill you, some to control you. You'd never know peace; there'd always be some need for you. I don't think it would make you happy. Elana, the power would change you, even if you didn't want it to. You'd see the world differently, be too big for our little town, or even the continent. Call me selfish, but I don't want you to change. And... well... Aryen sealed that power for a reason. I had a vision, and he told me that he wanted you to grow up safe, from your power as much as any outside threat. I'd like that too.

"But Elana, no matter what you choose, I'll support you. Forever."
>>
>>21293203
>"But Elana, no matter what you choose, I'll support you. Forever."
So you're like a Bra she never washes? ;)
>>
>>21293218
You utter ass I can't breathe I'm laughing so hard.
>>
You shrug, careful not the displace Elana too far as the two of you swish your feet in the cool spring water. "That's very likely true. Who knows? It could change everything. Unsealing it could make you so incredibly powerful that spirits and nations all over the world would kneel before you. You'd see the world differently, be too big for our little town, or even the continent. Call me selfish, but I don't want you to change."

You stare into the ripples your movements produce, watching the light glide across the surface of the water in uneven ellipticals.

"But I promise you this, Elana. Whatever you choose, however long it takes for you to come to a decision, I'll support you. I'll do everything in my power to ensure that no matter the outcome, it's one that you're happy with." you say, turning to smile at her. She wont meet your gaze, but you see the hints of a smile beginning to tug at the corners of her lips.

"Thanks, Osy." she says quietly. "I guess it's just something I'll have to figure out for myself."

The two of you spend the rest of the afternoon in comfortable silence, broken occasionally by theories on what formed this little oasis. Eventually dusk threatens to cover the mountains like a veil, and you pack up to leave.

>Say or do anything before you go?

You walk with Elana hand in hand back to the village. As you round the bend in the mountain path you catch the last rays of sunlight broken upon the horizon, a shower of reds and golds that trace the clouds with brilliant flame. Elana lets out a small gasp and turns to smile at you.

Elana gives you a kiss on the cheek as you reach the borders of the village and promises to check in on you tomorrow. You part ways with warm hearts and smiles, and for a moment, you feel as though everything is going to work out alright.

AN ANCIENT EVIL AWAKENS
>>
>>21293556
DAMN IT DIARCA I HAVE A TEST IN THE MORNING!

And I give It a hour in-game before everything goes to shit. Sorry Osyki but you having a nice date is going to cost you one major plot twist.
>>
The next few days pass in a blur. You retrieve Cordia from the village elders and begin work on the river trenches, a process which takes the space of three days to complete from start to finish, even with the Terra Disruptor's aid. The village's craftsmen work in rotating shifts behind you to shore up the rough edges of the trench.

Quinn and Terra collaborate on a series of increasingly fantastic and unrealistic totem ideas which you shoot down, gently, one after another. Still, their wild idealism spurs you to new heights of productivity, and with Quinn's help you replace the vast majority of the village's defensive totems that you are able to craft with the ingredients you have on hand.

You are finishing the last few meters of trenches in the vicinity of Boand's pond when she pops her head out of the water, eyes shining with excitement.

"This might affect the water levels in your pool, you know." you say, gesturing to the earth.

"I've got it covered, Osyki. Just dig."

As you breach the edge of the pond, you raise an eyebrow. The clear water hovers at the edge of the pool suspended in mid-air as though by some invisible barrier.

"It's my water. It doesn't leave without my say-so." she explains.
>>

"Pardon any rudeness, but does this mean that you've been, for lack of a better term, 'promoted' to a river spirit?"

>>
>>21293752

"Pardon any rudeness, but does this mean that you've been, for lack of a better term, 'promoted' to a river spirit?" you ask. Boa shakes her head, pointing to the dry riverbed.

"Not until that trench is full of water that my essence can envelope. Still, once it happens you should come check out the pool on the other side. Let's just say I'll be doing some home improvement."

You grin. "Sounds good," you say. "Shouldn't be too long 'till the first sno-"

"Osyki!" comes a voice from the woods behind you. You turn to see Quinn running toward you, waving his hand.

"What?" you ask, your spear already in hand. You were hoping for a week without trouble.

"The... the Mother sent us a message." he says, hands on his knees. "People. Spotted to the south of the swamp again. Looks like a group around the same size."

>>
>>21293886
"Gotcha. Sorry I can't stay Boa, urgent business."

Get back to the village, get the message and we're bringing someone with us I think. Also we should unbind Cordia from our megashovel and put her in the gauntlets.
>>
>>21293926
I think it'll just have to be Osy and Mayhew. We're going to be passing through the swamp and even with the Mother's blessing it's going to be hard going just for the two of us.
>>
Hang on, no votes for Oyski making first contact? Even if it's just scouting, getting a human's opinion on them is going to be the difference between walking into a trap and a successful encounter.
>>
>>21293940
Man, I was in such a hurry I forgot we were supposed to scout them out, THEN have an escort(maybe)
>>
>>21293940
We're planning on making first contact, it's just that Mayhew wanted to come along.

I think the plan was bring Mayhew along, get close, observe them for a bit, make sure it isn't a trap, and then meet them.
>>
>>21293963
Right, but even just going once by ourselves can substantially reduce the danger involved. Lets us see what hazards environmental and otherwise might pose a risk and gives us a chance to see if they've got totemist capability without endangering the elder.
>>
>>21293978
Nah, that seems risky.
Especially since we can't use that map to the full potential yet.
>>
>>21293983
...More risky than taking a sexagenarian along with us on our first time making the exact same trip?
>>
>>21293994
Mayhew said he could take care of himself and I'm inclined to trust him on that.

We managed a rather pleasant trip through the swamp even with the Mother throwing everything and the kitchen sink at us along the way.

He is probably better at a lot of the talking and diplomacy than we are and he actually knows things about the people from the south west and will better be able to ascertain their hostility.
>>
>>21294019
If you remember we did that by walking blind underwater most of the way there using a totem binding we don't even have anymore. On the way back we just got lucky, and we were official emissaries from the Mother to Sylvia. This is a purely mortal affair and by now we're a known figure in the swamp: spirits there will be interested in us for good or ill. Spirits who, by and large, share the Mother's poor feelings regarding the binding of spirits in an area almost completely untouched by human presence. Mayhew says he can take care of himself but can he simultaneously make himself a shadow and jump thirty feet in the air to avoid the Watcher in the Water?

And as for negotiation, no matter what the plan is for Oyski to make first contact. Taking the elder along reduces the time it takes for the village's official introduction to them to happen, but no matter what Oyski's going in first to gauge their intentions and potential threat level, even before the first hellos are said.
>>
Bump
>>
>>21294057
At the same time, going it alone seems too risky.
We already agreed to go with the elder's judgment, going behind our backs seems like one of the things our master would do, and we're trying not to emulate.
>>
>>21294245
Uhh... actually, I suggested that Oyski go ahead first and then come back for him. They agreed, I thought.
>>
If it's still possible to suggest stuff for meeting the foreigners, observe them with our magic sight before first contact. We can never be too sure.
>>
You nod, shouldering your spear. "Out of curiosity," you ask, "What form did this message come in?"

Quinn raises an eyebrow. "Spoken. By an emissary. Some flower spirit, I think."

You nod. "Tell the Elders that I'm going out to take the first look like we've discussed. Haine should meet me at the edge of the forest. Boa, please ask Sylvia to make sure he gets there unharmed."

Boa winks at you, diving into her pool.

"Do you think you'll want backup on this, Osyki?" Quinn asks, thumbing the pommel of his mace.

You shake your head. "This is going to require all the subtlety I can muster, and while I don't doubt your abilities to be discreet, I've got the panoply of Foci to make this mission work. Keep Haine safe until I get back, alright? Your job is to keep an eye on the village while I'm gone."

He nods. "Got it, Osyki." Quinn says, nodding. "Need me to get you anything from the village?"

I'm assuming we have all of our foci and our rock gauntlets so we can rebind Cordia to something less specialized than the shovel.

"Could you grab my standard pack of rations, rope, pitons, chalk, yadda yadda that I always bring for this sort of thing."

"Thanks Quinn. Could you grab my usual traveling pack with the rope, snacks, herbs, and all? It never hurts to be prepared."

You grin. "Thanks, Quinn. Could you grab my usual gear? Y'know, my pack, my rope, snacks, herbs, pitons, chalk..."

Quinn laughs aloud, nodding. "I've got your shopping list, Osyki. Always prepared, eh?"

You nod. "Never caught unprepared. That's how I've survived this long."

"I'll run and get it. Wait here."

He's gone for around thirty minutes. In the intervening time, Boand nudges you with questions. What you're expecting, what you plan to do if things turn sour. When he gets back, you shoulder your pack and head for the edge of the forest.

A familiar slithering sound accosts you as you make your way toward the southern swamp. You look to your right to find Siperco, smiling, sliding along the forest floor a few feet away from you.

"Morning, Siperco." you say with a small wave.

He nods. "Totemist. Sylvia sent me to see if you wanted some backup for this. I know the swamp, as you know, and I'm pretty quiet when I need to be."

"It'd be appreciated. I don't know the swamp as well as I would like.

About how long a trip should it be to get where we're going?"

Bumping before I go to bed, someone archive this if Diarca doesn't come back in time.
