On the subject of airships, might I suggest a basic balloon, with a lightweight manpowered propeller apparatus? With our scientific understanding it would be fairly easy to produce aluminum, then all we'd need would be to hook up a bicycle-esque propeller onto a basket. Make a large enough basket, and we have a mobile air bus.

Well thats up to you. The Batpeople were hardly mentioned. So if you want them to be like that, thats up to you.

Perhaps. This would allow us to use large scale ships, but unless we figure out batteries or start churning out more lightning mages, and that's AFTER recreating wiring and a motor for the propellers, we won't have more than one or two electrically powered propeller balloons.

>>
>>21395690

One of the most curious magics out there is that of the ability to read minds. I am rather well acquainted with the subject. Lilly is quite skilled in it. We have come to abuse her skill in a few ways, and I'm not just talking about in combat and in the bed room. But before I can go into further detail I must get the basics out of the way.

There are three levels of mind reading:

Passive, which catches surface and thoughts that are "Broadcasted" (For more on that see chapter 5). Broadcasted in the simplest terms are thoughts that are thought really hard. Succubi turn out to have this turned on as a default to better allow them to seduce people.

Active, which is the active digging type. Also the most commonly used by practitioners. It can be tricky to dig through the filler though and is easily blocked by a trained person.

Mind Trip, This one allows you to walk around in a persons head. There are a few catches though. Such as that you have to be let in, the body makes real what ever happens to you to a lesser degree and with in the limits of possibility. The practitioner if skilled enough can also pull people along.
>>
>>21396038
With that out of the way we can get to the meat of the subject. The first thing to note is that one can not use these skills on their own person, well they can but all they get is an annoying echo. As for in the Mind Trip you start to bleed from the eyes and ears.

I must also make note of the dangers of such magics. Its possible to alter things if you know what you are doing, though it is impossible to do so perfectly. Its a sort of limited retrograde amnesia. You also have to worry about Mingle Drain. Which is burning out from spending to much time in another head. This can eat at your personality. This is more likely in two way mind reading and even more likely when using a device to do so. Mingle Drain can heal if caught before you start to think you are the other person and if given proper time to heal.

With the warnings out of the way we can begin on abusing the magic of mind reading.

Sorry, sorry. I'm not thinking completely straight; I should head to bed. Disregard my last post.
>>
>>21396061
The brain is an amazing thing. Provided that no damage occurs it can store untold amounts of data. The problem arises in how its stored. Naturally the brain stores things as you sleep moving it from short to long term. It supposedly sorts all this information on relevance and time. This may sound logical at first, but what our subconscious finds relevant may differ from what we find relevant. As for time, the things closest to sleep are ranked higher than those not. This is believed to be a survival thing. So as you may start to see memory is not the best sorted library out there, which has long been know by memory masters. One of the oldest tricks is to tie facts to a real world path that you walk everyday. This helps to better sort and tag things.
>>
>>21396170
Lilly was always pulling factoids and things out of my head with relative ease,
so with a brain full of things I had trouble remembering I enlisted Lilly's help in a kind of redecorating of sorts. I quickly learned this was not the way to go, as the recovery was hell. Luckily we were able to speed things up with magic healing. Not even sure how that works, Hellfire Healing really can heal most anything.

After a week of retrograde amnesia. We tried a different approach. If the mind is like a library then why not make a reference catalog. As that was what those great memorizers where really doing. So Lilly and I planned out the framework of a sort of sorting system of reference. She installed it into my mind and it works. The downside is that new things also need to be filled or they don't show up in the system.
>>
>>21396291
We would latter find people who had photographic memories and people with editc memories. Which proved a learning experience like no other. (See chapter 7 for the full report)

Next we move onto the world of therapy. Passive is a good way to get an idea of what makes a person tick and find certain problems, but beyond that it has little use. Active shared reading works to give a person an idea of what the problem is or what causes it in some cases. Such as in Lilly's case. But Active manipulation is a horrible way to go about it as it does not treat the real problems but covers up the symptoms. Though it is unarguably better than medicating people. The best way to go about it is to get in there and get dirty. Mind trip, go in there pull the patient along for the ride and confront the real problems. The personification of ones dark side is one of the more interesting ones. Fighting one's dark side by yourself tends to be a bad idea. In most cases you really don't want to destroy it as that would have countless side effects on you. Typically you want to make peace with it, some times that does require a beat down though.

So, I've been thinking of writing about an outrealmer that left to dwarven lands in a sponsored trip to be GREAT at rune magic. So I was wondering, just to make it consistent, what exactly can be used to power the runes? Personal Magic? Enviromental? Magical batteries? also... okay... so...

1-4: AA, dealing with elves, culiminates in Orc invasion, on elfy influence, Elves have been quiet?

It's been implied that they're facing some massive threat on their eastern boarder right? And that might be why they've become dicks towards everyone?

It might also explain why us raising a few elven villages and vivisecting them ends up with paltry responses.

So, it's been 10 years since then... seems like it might be time to have something happen again? I'm just trying to get everyone's mind stewing. In the mean time, I'm going back to designing castles, including the initial keep (since I imagine we only had a keep and not a proper curtain wall to begin with, maybe the FOUNDATIONS of the original curtain wall, but the human structure below certainly not).

Also in reading the threads. Castle Waifu was originally a human fortress, not a temple, elven or otherwise >->; might have some kind of super ruined elven structure at the center, but I imagine humans would have deconstructed any such structure to recycle the stone.

Another good reason I would avoid being a knight.

Despite the legendary invulnerability of magicians and casters, the reality of it is far, far more gloomy. I could garuntee a death, certainly, maybe two, but after that it would be a matter of understanding what it takes for me to do so, and there are very simple countermeasures to it.

Wizards should not meddle in mortal affairs, for the same reasons nuclear physicists shouldn't store fissionables in the house. Far to easy for them to do something silly, much easier to get rid of them and the fissionables.
>>
>>21401684
way it seems to be written is that they just "work" I imagine almost all runes suck up ambient magic from their surroundings. With time they can probably fail.

That or they're geometry magic. Drawing the right shape causes the universe to twist in the direction you want.

Or then again, maybe some runes act as "power" drawing it from a source (EG: Sun-Absorb rune gives the entire runic statement power, while a Kinetic Absorb rune might be more appropriate for a weapon)
>>
>>21401684
Rune magic is about two things: knowledge, and sacrifice.

Most Runes themselves cover the knowledge part - unless you understand, intimately, why a rune does what it does and what it means and WHY it means that, you can't just copy a rune and expect it to work no matter how much sacrifice you put into it. It's a little like praying to a deity you don't worship, or attacking a tree with a practice sword - you're making the right gesture for all the wrong reasons and with no understanding of what the gestures mean.

The second part is sacrifice. Tradisiotnally, runes are learned or given to those who use them as part of a gift of knowledge that someone paid an incredible price for. As a result, you must pay a price to empower the rune itself. The sacrifice is both symbolic and literal - there is no gain from nothing given. Often this sacrifice tends towards the mundane: powdered gemstones, precious metals as inlay, the perfect material for the run to be made of/set into. Without that sacrifice to empower it, the rune is just writing.

There are exceptions of course, because magic is like that. For instance, Silver's Staff has no inlay or powdered gems; but it is entirely covered with runes, and the sacrifice was time and effort and sleep and no little bit of pain in making all those runes. Where a few runes of protection and strength in silver or diamond dust in a few hours could have sufficed, it took her several weeks and 4"X 184" of runeworked wood to manage the same thing.

Runes are very fiddly, Both of the other responses are right. There are many ways for runes to draw power. There are many effects. They work similar to a computer programing language. As that is different styles develop Such as A Witch's and such as Jistin said. I personally use either mana bank, draw from user, or ley line. Though there are many others. There are traditionally connecter runes, effect runes, logic runes, power runes, and trigger runes.

Girls, are you tired of your Knight wasting his time playing his silly traditional games when he could be playing games with you? Well then, Do I have the thing for you. Introducing the /d/ice. These dice have some oh so fun enchantments on them. One such die has effects such as growth, shrink, vibrate, and many other fun possibilities. Made all the better when rolled with the other dice. Such as the targeting die, which determines the effected body part. Or the multiplier die, which decides just how intense the effect is going to be. Just switch his dice out for a few of these during his next gaming session and he will more than likely get the hint or have some time freed up.

They come in 4,6,8,10,20. Each with more effects than the last. They are also interchangeable, so if you want few body parts, but a load of effects then you could use a d4 and a d20.

I'm no nuclear physicist, and I can almost build a simple fusionn bomb with stuff I have at home.

>>21401897
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought what the staff was done to was that you carved the runes for weakness into it, then carved them out again to "purge" the weakness.

Raising a child: I don't know if you're doing it right or wrong, but I love it regardless.
>>
>>21406274
No, I carved the runes of weakness into the wood of the staff - making them empty places in the staff, meaning I carved "weakness out" of the staff.

Just because it's Autistic magic doesn't mean I won't bend it to the sort of play on words and mental trickery that I learn dealing with Faeries.
>>
>>21406371
Well actually if you notice my stories regarding the Isle of Obsidos get closer and closer to success. The Fey were doomed, the admirable Bin Dasi turned back, the Dwarves used remote viewing so they'd know the most if it wasn't hushed up, the Driders actually caught one. Let's just say B has their work cut out for them.

>>21406411
And who, do you think, developed the internet in the first place?

>>21406486
...Still don't see how that won't make the staff super-weak. Unless you wanted a staff that was part wet noodle and part warm elastic.
>>
>>21406274
And I'll be sad if K dies as well as B. B is in the position of being in danger...but no one has caught onto K yet....I hope.

Besides, I'm a fan of the Chinese ideal of heroic sacrifice leading to regret and tearful memorials to the fallen ally.
>>
>>21406433
considering how waver turned out, very very right
>>
>>21406519

You gota think outside the box hoss. She literally carved weakness OUT of the staff by CARVING [OUT] THE WORD. It's magic, it's funny like that.
>>
>>21406519
Magic is 1 part belief, 1 part know-how, and 1 part "Huh Wat?" In this case, the belief is that because the staff is missing the parts of it that carried weakness, rather than having been filled in with physical representations of it, it is therefore stronger than it would be.

And flexibility is actually pretty damn important to a staff fighter; prevents sundering of the weapon if you actually block a weapon, and prevents cuts from chopping pieces out of it by less chipping away from it. Believe me, I've had people break them while I was using them before, and it's distinctly uncomfortable on the hands.
>>
>>21406550
You mean she identified every knot, bulge and "fingerprint" of wood that resembled the magic symbols for the word magic, then systematically removed them from the staff?

Gonna need confirmation on this, coz that opens up a new problem on what they used to plug up the holes. Wouldn't the wood need to be smoothed down, or it'd be horribly nobbly?

>>21406609
...well I guess that's that answered.

>>
>>21406639
That just opens up weirder things!

Would carving the rune for fire into wood burn it or freeze it?

Would carving the symbol for light into a wall illuminate or cause it to dim?

Would carving the rune for silence into boots make them horrible noisemakers?

It seems like inlay=normal effect, carve=opposite effect to this type of magic, in which case, I just get more confused.

>>
>>21406836
Thats one way of doing it yes. Another would to carve around the whole thing except for in the spot and shape of the rune. But thats harder and dumber
>>
>>21406675
And that system might not work for everyone - which is why it's Autistic magic, rather than simply Sensate magic. Magic, all magic, is unfortunately an intensely personal experience, which is why wizards study so long and so hard to achieve even low levels of power. What works for one, may work differently or not at all for another, or it may work perfectly every time for everyone (like Runes). Using runes to create a magical effect does not necessarily indicate that the person can use Rune magic. In this case, I used the runes to create a magic effect not based on the power of the runes, but based on the symbolism of the runes. It's not the cross that empowers the priest, it's the meaning it provides to him.
>>
>>21406812
for the sake of not combining tons of different kinds of runes being applied to one thing, would each carved rune of weakness only remove a small part of the overall weakness (so if you want something basically unbreakable the whole thing has to be covered in so many reverse weakness runes that there's no room for anything else)
>>
>>21406882
I would say more like Rune magic is the language of all magic and since magic is so diverse it tends to be rather diverse in nature. There is no one "Rune Magic" I agree with the rest though.

Also I was thinking as funny as I still find my joke about Drunk magic I think a change in terminology should be made. Flow Magic would be more accurate. As an outside force be it fey or alcohol puts you closer in line with the nature of magic, specifically its written form. It just happens that the Drawves are good at it.
>>
>>21407001
Not Wild Magic, where there's always a chance that you get something like a fireball ten times as strong, or a cow falling onto someone? Baldur's Gate reference, right there. I guess Wild Magic would be something else entirely.
>>
>>21406998
It would remove its type of weakness in an effect area = to power input. There are many kind of weaknesses though.
>>

The Hermit’s House and the Uninvited Guests

There once was Hermit who lived on the Hill,
It wasn’t for health, it wasn’t for ill.
He simply had no time for the bill,
This Hermit who once lived on the Hill.

Many years passed, he lived all alone
His flesh was all withered, his heart was a stone.
His house on the hill felt dead to the bone
He decided no longer would he live alone.

He sent out the word, let loose the call
His doors were thrown open, an invite to all.
Whether beggar or lord, or ocean sent squall
All souls were welcome to the Hermit’s Hill Hall.

The work tanned farmers, who tilled the new soil,
The coin fatted merchants, who reaped from their toil;
The pristine plague doctors, clothes smelling of sage,
The hobbled town elders, bones creaking with age;
The bands of young blades, blood raring for glories,
The small fold children, ears ready for stories;
The humble church priests, thoughts iron and pious,
The rowdy bent crooks that howled about bias;
They all appeared at his doorstep.

The workers found work, the traders moved gold
The servants cleaned up, stoked fires once cold.
They came to his home; there was plenty for more,
But the Hermit heard sounds, distant knocks at the door.

The god-fearing nobles who squabbled for crowns,
The spark eyed short Gnomes who dwelt in steel towns;
The plain roaming nomads that bent at no knee,
The western lain persons from Kingdoms sworn Free;
The swarthy Serrid braves from sun beaten sands,
The hardy North-men from ice covered lands;
The prick eared High Elves, aged and proud,
The sturdy built Dwarves, whose voices were loud;
They all appeared at his doorstep.

The Hermit was puzzled, his questions were raised
They held out the invite, his kindness they praised.
They came to his home; there was many for more,
But the Hermit heard sounds, weird knocks at the door.

The Bone Worker Black and his motley crew,
The Witches flying in on staves of yew;
The Wizards who rode on horseless saddles
The Shamans rowing close on boatless paddles;
The caravans of Scholars and the processions of Priests
The Salt Lords of the Helm and the Foam Lords of the Deep;
The Bards that could [Sing] and the Loons lost in books,
The Alchemist True and her fifty-nine cooks;
They all appeared at his doorstep.

The Hermit surprised, was now host to mages,
They kept to themselves, and filled up the stages.
They came to his home; there was some room for more,
But the Hermit heard sounds, odd knocks at the door.

The travelling Cats who traded and sought,
The loyalist Dogs from wars they had fought;
The air-headed Birds that flew through the skies,
The coils of Snakes and their straight slit eyes;
The barbarous Orcs that marched from the South,
The Driders with whips that poured from the Mouth;
The foul bodied Gnolls, souls untamed and wild,
The Bats from their caves, hearts quiet and mild;
They all appeared at his doorstep.

The Hermit was shocked, but turned none away,
Should they be civil, all guests could then stay.
They came to his home; there was still room for more,
But the Hermit heard sounds, strange knocks at the door.

And the Funny Fish Folk while singing silly songs,
The Star Studded Sovereign and their Court banging gongs;
The Golden people, resplendent and ordered,
The Capering horde, lustily they cavorted;
The Cap-headed men and their spore addled kin,
The Mountain Men tall in silent grey skin;
The Serpentine Shards of a shattered will,
The Creepers and Sleepers under the old Hermit’s Hill;
They all appeared at his doorstep.

All guests turned their heads, sights novel and rare,
Yet none broke composure, only Hermit did care.
They came to his home; there was little room for more,
But the Hermit heard sounds, great knocks at the door.

The Five Lords of fire from worlds lost to time,
The old One-Eyed soldier who fought past his prime;
The Nine who were sylvan, and feline and gone,
The Eight-legged mentor of an empire undone;
The self proclaimed Mother, her mind wild and mazed,
The Iron-shod guard and their straight steely gaze;
The strong and the best, the weak and the rest;
They all appeared at his doorstep.

He turned to his guests, they begged him deny,
But Hermit stood stiff, and more got his aye.
They came to his home; there was no room for more,
And the Hermit sought sound, no more knocks at the door.

The Hermit was pleased, his house burst with life,
But little he knew; ‘twould cause him such strife.

It started at lunch, when all came to dine,
The food all prepared, the dishes were fine.
The men tucked their bibs, the monsters licked chops,
The mages helped out with animate props.
The strangers set plates with impossible speed
The noblemen plotted, the gods took no heed.

The Hermit took place at head of the table,
For once all were neat, and seemed to be stable.
When luncheon did start, one moments respite
He asked when they’d leave, in day or in night?

Where once they were good, and docile and quiet,
Now so enraged, they started to riot!

The men were outspoken, the monsters shook fists
The nobles pushed claims, with false deeds and lists.
The blades took stands, the elders held back,
The braves and the priests held knuckles to crack.

The Five trolled mortals with boons of great power,
The wizards holed up and built many a tower.
The Nine took their leave, and everyone’s hats;
The Dogs started wars, dragging Fish and the Cats!

The Sovereign disappoint, the Dragons just shrugged,
The Gods swept their skeletons under the rug.
The Bards struck up songs, the merchants worked gains,
The Driders and Cap-heads brought spore-whips and chains!

The windows were locked, the doors were all slammed,
The walls and floors covered in glue-berry jam!
The Hermit’s face flat, grabbed coat from a rack,
He looked once again, and didn’t turn back.

He left his Hill House, and all those inside
To scurry afar, safe havens to hide.
His new home at peace, twas simple and silent,
No guest came to him, invited nor violent.

He heard a new noise, of that he was sure
But a now dreaded sound, of a knock at the door;
They all appeared at his doorstep.

The story thus ends, the Moral depends:

Take care who you invite, and who you can trust,
The ones that are proud won’t leave without fuss.

Roentgenium?

element 111, from the same group as gold, silver, and copper which are all really good conductors, which indicates roentgenium is likely a good conductor as well, but the most stable version doesn't last a minute.

Lightning = energy spear? Makes sense.

Electricity increases the occurrence of corrosion. If you don't make them out of gold, the computer only has an active life of 6-12 months.

dragons have 3 forms: humanoid, dragon, and hybrid. they don't need excellent control to go full humanoid, even hatchlings can do it, though they only get 1 humanoid form (no looking like anyone you want every time you change) which they can determine the form of the first time they take it

Alright, let the race to metal arms commence!

It had not been a relatively long time that Giovanni had been gone from TeeGee, but as soon as he saw the gatehouse of those familiar walls, he knew it had been far too long. He left thinking that he needed adventure and something new, but after his experiences on his ‘adventure’ he was certainly glad to be home.

The group that had gone with them to move into the castle were in awe of the diversity that lay behind those walls, all different races getting along with each other in a friendly manner, as well as a prospering city life. Evette had gathered them all for a tour and to find them suitable housing for the time being. Giovanni had remained at the gatehouse, cloak covering his misfortune. He began to walk through when the guards stationed there had stopped him.

“Hey you, what business do you come to TeeGee for?” one asked.
“I return home to my home and my duties, Guardsman.” Giovanni teased from behind his hood, letting it drop off his head after he finished.

Both the guards exclaimed their shock and moved in to talk to their Captain.
>>
>>21420054

“Sir Giovanni! We thought that you had left us for good, glad to have you back in the castle. Whew, looks like had quite an adventure eh?” One of the guards remarked, seeing the freshly healing wounds on his face.
“Yeah... well, thats the least of my problems.” Giovanni responded.

Giovanni gave a polite nod to both of the guards and began his way through the bustling city to find his small home tucked away in the corner of the walls. He walked through the market district, filled with buying and selling, people shouting and laughing, the exchange of coin and the barter of trades lining the streets. It felt good to be amongst the people he cared so deeply for, and the feeling was returned to him with every face that noticed him among the crowds. He had turned to his head to smile back to a passing acquaintance, as he had begun to stumble over some crates that protruded into the streets. He put his arm out to stop himself, but only resulted in Giovanni rolled over on the ground. The crowd slowed as one of them reached down to help him up, extending a hand down to his left side. When no hand was raised to receive the help, the kind person reached down to grab his hand, only to find that there was none there. The bystander’s face grew a tone of shock quickly, staring back into the eyes of Giovanni, who had raised his right hand. Being pulled up, the person looked at him, knowing exactly what had happened. They bore a sad expression as more and more people began to realise what had happened. Women had gasped, clasping their hands in front of their mouths; men had dropped their gaze in empathy. Giovanni just nodded to them all and walked slowly back to him home, feeling sullen.
>>
>>21420063

He walked through his doorway, happy to be out of sight of the public and in the familiar space of his own home. Giovanni took off the cloak that shrouded his figure and gazed at himself in the mirror that lay in his room. He stood there for what seemed like hours, seeing the lack of his extremity and going through various emotions about his situation. He sat hard on his bed, frustrated with everything at that point. He felt his way of life was to be threatened, and he could not return to his former life of being the Captain of the Guard, and performing the same duties. It was not until his wife Evette returned and sat next to him that he begun to formulate a plan. She had put a hand on his leg and kissed his cheek, trying to comfort him when he stood up suddenly. He stood up quickly, standing tall and confidently, his head full with ideas.

“Evette! I know what I can do!” He said happily. He began pacing back and forth beside the bed, Evette’s head just tracked back and forth as he frantically spoke about his plan to replace him arm with a prosthetic one, but a very unique kind of prosthetic. She was at a loss to what he was talking about at points, as he was drawing his inspiration from a place before he left the Old Realm. She just nodded and smiled as he finished his rambling idea, hand on his hip in a triumphant stance.
He grabbed Evette’s hand as he bolted out the door and began his way to the castle, he had a plan but for it to succeed he needed the cooperation of an ambitious few. When he got the castle, he immeadiatly sent envoys to the Gnomish Holds and the Dwarven Kingdoms.

“Hopefully, they respond in kind. I can’t offer them much in monetary compensation...”

-TBC

>>
>>21420151
Basically, you want to recreate a skeletal arm as closely as possible, with joints in all the right places. After that, I'd rune the everloving shit out of it.

Also, does this new group story mean that we don't meet ANY vampires until after 14AA? I was planning something out with one after I end the current thing.
Yes it has to do with waifu-ing

But only visiting.

I'm trying to remember what I was doing in 14AA...

Let's see, major trade contact with Balitaria in the Free Kingdoms was 10AA...kids were born in 11AA, so that leaves me with...nothing definite until 16AA when anti-demon training was made part of the basic training regimen instead of a supplement by their assigned knight later on.

>we haven't learnt not to get burned by fire
as a sensate mage, i have to point out that getting burnt by fire can be a good thing. i regularly go out of my way to get hit by lightning
>>
>>21421925
As an Autist mage I have to say getting hurt is also a good thing in some cases. Which reminds me

The Sensoriume:

Idea: A sensation library for Sensates and also just those curious.

Plan: Make a bunch of those sensation storage devices that Lilly sells as a sex toy, Get a building, Get people with sensation memories that would make for good magic backing for Sensates. Like Lyrik's whole electrocuted thing. Membership? New sense additions process?

Safety: All sense storage devices will be labeled with details of what it is and a pain and deviance rating the last one is a just in case. We don't specifically want such, but I don't know, someone may be able to work something like that into a kind of magic.

Other Ideas?
>>
>>21421995
“Explain this to me again. You want to make a library of sensations, painful ones, and you don't see how this is a bad idea.”

“Not just painful. Healing could be nice or painful. I just think it might help Sensates with things, like not being seen as sense freaks, not having to kill themselves to get better at what they do, and so on.”

“What about questionable things, like if I wanted to tie an enemy up with Sense magic. Seems like a lot of bondage smut to me.”

“If you think about it all magic is like smut. I had a guy send me his theories on magic that was basically magic exists because when you do it your really just tickling the gods genitalia, and that the reason random crap works is because sometimes the gods like to get it different. Sad thing is I can't argue it, even though I have met some of them.”

“That's a disturbing theory. But you could find out easily. Next time you see Tera just give her a good groping and see what happens.”

“HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAAAA. Oh man I actually thought you were serious for a second. Oh man,you were. My sides they are moving on their own.”

“That is not very nice.”

“Right, well listen. Next time I see her I'll send her your way and you can give her a good tweak of the nipples, and we will see what happens to you.”

“That smile says you know what will happen.”

“I admit nothing. But seriously, what do you think?"

"It's a good idea as long as Lilly does not get involved."

"Agreed."
>>
>>21421995
seems kind of overpowered if you can just stick someone in and have them learn magic. not to mention taking out all the personal aspects of sensate magic. The Witch has had to live life hard to get what she has, being able to just upload that seems cheap
>>

...That was not about actual sensation or experience, but rather the dangers of advancing magic too quickly. Like how science has to pass peer review and ethics and stuff. When magic gets out of hand, bad things happen, see Wastelands.

>>
>>21422305

>>
One thing I've noticed about the setting is the lack of consistency concerning the nature and capabilities of magic. However, I think I've found a solution. Feel free to shoot it down if you don't like it, but I think this works rather well.
>>
After a lengthy discussion with a local witch on the nature and functionality of magic, I had an epiphany. A key part of magic is something akin to a placebo. Magic works how you think it should work. Sensate magic, enchantment, runes, autistic magic, focus magic, they’re all variations on the same thing. They’re just different ways to achieve similar results.

To use myself as an example, I’ve always been very curious. I’ve always wanted to figure out how something works. Thus, when using magic I always assumed that there was an inherently logical system at work that I didn’t quite understand yet. To me, magic was an orderly yet unknown thing. And so it was. But now that I realize this, will it affect my ability to enchantment? Will I even be able to cast a spell, knowing that it’s all in my head? Perhaps by surpassing this, would I be able to achieve as of yet unknown levels of magical ability?

OK, this is reminding me way too much of CHIM. Regardless, I gotta test this shit out. Time to blow stuff up.
>>
>>21422474
Apparently I need to rewrite my thing on magic as this was what I was trying to allude to
>>
>>21422418

We just have to make it work GearHeart. We just have to make it work. I will supply the arm, you supply... the magic voodoo or whatever you do.
>>
>>21422474
OK, stuff has been blown up. That didn't really answer any of my questions, but it did give me time to think.

I'd expected magic to be a part of physics; something natural. It’s not. Magic is tricking the universe to look the other way while you steal its lunch money. Magic by its very nature doesn’t make sense. So what the fuck have I been doing? Why can magic work? If it isn’t natural, why does it exist? How? Was there conscious thought in its creation?

Unfortunately, I don’t think I’m going to get answers to these questions any time soon. Not unless I can get the ear of a god, anyway.

I need a nap.

On a tangent, I like to think that there's several copies of the Thirty-Six Lessons of Vivec in Olin's library. Due to spies, one of these copies has made its way to the Mirthterran college of magic. I am actually quite appalled at the idea of a Sensorium as well.

The theory is sound, the principle understandable, the potential for abuse is not only significant, it won't actually help Sensate mages very much.

With Sir Gearhearts permission, a quick Two Paragraph short involving him would would define the situation quite nicely.

I can in fact make it work. There are problems that you will need to cope with....

first, the nerves. Gold would work best, silver is acceptable. The bones would be of iron, not steel. The 'skin can be of whatever metal you find appropriate. I recommend gems or copper for the joints.

The down sides: the arm will be heavy. You will need straps to help support it, because unless you have it made of wood or true bone, it is going to pull at the flesh it is attached to. You will not be able to take it off. It will not age or alter as you grow older, which means that your body will change, and that wills train the places it is connected to you. I can get around that, but it presents other problems. Finally, in places where magic does not work or is intense/wild, it will react appropriately, which means you may want to avoid such places like the plague, a feat all but impossible for a Knight.
>>
>>21431295

I know what my construction will be ma'am, and they will be made of far better materials than a pig iron and copper. Also, there will be a socket, not just a metal arm attached to my body, so the shoulder join will indeed be metal, not flesh.

See >>21429218

for further details on the shoulder socket.

It will be anatomically near perfect, down to ever joint. Thats the jobs of the Dwarves and Gnomes, I just need it to be animated and reactive to the wearers will.

I was sitting in my accustomed place when Sir Gearheart arrived. Apparently he had an interesting idea for a library for the Sensate mages to study at. I was whittling a wand of sorts as he approached me, a slim, short blade barely an inch long sliding through the wood with ease. "It is an interesting idea. I suspect you haven't asked Lilly about it. She would be the first to tell you it's a bad idea." At his confusion I sighed and sat up, moving aside so he could sit with me.

"Sensuality is one of the most addictive forces known to man. There is no better drug, no better release, no better foundation for corruption than sensusal experience, no matter what it is. You would have to restrict it to those who are actually mages....but it wouldn't work."
>>
File: 1352065861619.jpg-(43 KB, 232x232, Avatar.jpg)

>>21431386
"Why not?" was the natural and expected reaction.

I sighed. "I can explain, but you will have to apologize to Lily for me." His confusion was palpable, and I looked him wright in the eye...and stabbed him in the thigh.

The man has a vocabulary like no other. I snapped my fingers and got his immediate attention - a Sensate trick I used to quiet crying children, a tiny, momentary distraction. "Describe the pain to me now."

"WHAT?!"

"Describe it." After he calmed down enough to do so, I interrupted him. "What you are suffering is unique to you. No one feels that like you do." I then plunged the tiny blade into my own thigh. I've never seen someone's eyes bulge so incredulously. Since I had been prepared for it I only hissed softly.
>>
>>21431452
I reached over and placed on hand on his wound, and my own on the one in my leg. I closed my eyes and felt the pain, and experienced it as fully and deeply as I could. Then I took that and gave it to him, while takign his pain away.

A man's pain is not the same as a woman's. My own senses are somewhat less....displeased by physical pain, since I've become something of a masochist of the years of suffering. And the expression on his face was enough to tell me he could feel the difference.

His was a deeper, more intense sensation, without the balm of my masochism to alleviate the purity of his pain. His penchant for avoiding pain helped in that respect - well, hurt in that respect.

"The problem is that no two people EVER experience things the same way. Not even the exact same sensation. This pain, your pain is utterly alien to me, as mine is to you." I released the spell, and hissed again, the sensation renewed. "A sensorium is a lovely idea, but all it will be is a place for sensualists to become addicts. That is my feeling on the matter."
>>

>>21431492
He considered this, though I do not know how deeply or carefully, as I applied a bandage and an herbal to his wound. I imagine Lily would have words with me later, but realistically, it was the only explanation that would be irrefutable. "Just remember that Sensate mages are all addicts of a sort. What we feel, what we experience is profound and soul-shaking. Giving us access to somethign like a Sensorium is asking for trouble orders of magnitude larger than having a wizard laboratory around, simply because Sensate magic is the least predictable and most addictive of powers." I smiled wanly at him as I bandaged my own leg.

"Just keep in mind that the more mages you have in TeeGee, the more likely someone is going to decide that because we have power, we should have more power. It's as bad a cycle as any political agenda can be." I sighed and looked at the bloodied blade. There was only a trace, but I couldn't use it for workign on the wand now.

"I'll let you think on it, but that is my....two inches of depth on it."

~!End

>>21431357

Ahww. I promise I won't turn your arm into a woman. Also I was thinking a socket also. With gold wiring to the nervous system. And runic tattos under the mounting place. As for the rest your going to need some thing light and hard.

>>21431492
Not bad. Jims a bit off his game in reaction time apparently. My old Aikido instructor would give me hell.

>Masochism, avoiding pain
HAHAH yeah, I'm no stranger to pain. I'v been shot, stabbed, hit by a car, fell of a cliff, impaled with an iron spike, have had two bones and two muscles removed, consent paralyzing pain for 8 years of my life. I may not have your problems but I have my experiences. Also in story GearHeart told Kuro about how you had to kind of love and except pain to keep on going. Not a big deal just saying.
>>
>>21431695

Indeed, I was thinking of going with the Fantasy equivalent of Aluminum.

Mithril: Light and very sturdy, those would be the major components of the prosthetic such as the bones and the major plating pieces seen in the illustration above. It is resistant to rusting and prolonged wear, and should provide a long life-of-use from the major components that would be moving.

Now, obviously gold and other major conductors would be used for the more delicate components. Obviously there will be insulators and protective coatings that layer the vital instruments of the prosthetic that would be connecting to the flesh, and the construction of the outer plates would be very similar to the illustration above as well, with some minor changes that I may or may not sketch out.

>>21431574
>>21431695

The Runes would probably be a good idea, as that would help with the longevity of the spells, and not require me having to learn some complex magics to keep it working.
>>
>>21432040
I've been thinking of mithril as some sort of aluminum/titanium alloy, and adamantium as some sort of really heavy titanium alloy. Maybe tungsten?
>>
>>21431695
Glad you enjoyed it a little -the story, not the pain - and yes, there is that strangeness. It would be more the surprise rather than anything that shocked. You don't generally expect someone to stab you in the leg, and short quick movements are both qualities of Tai Chi and Akido. Of course, cheating helps.

>>21432040
Email me and we can set up a storytime perhaps.
>>
>>21432132
Platinum and Rhodiuym alloys can make the hardness of a metal so high that it becomes unworkable.
>>
>>21432177
That's interesting. I just know that tungsten/uranium are some of the hardest and densest materials.
>>
>>21432177
True, but then the same can be said for uranium/titanium alloys too, along with being heavy as all...wait a second...did I just figure out what adamantine is?
>>
>>21432256
Depleted Uranium projectiles would be perfect for the railguns
>>
>>21432132

I agree, very light and very sturdy.

As for Adamantium, what the Witch said is more plausible in a real world context, however the process of refining platinum and Rhodiuym might be difficult in our setting.

Even though Adamantium might be stronger, Mithril is waaaaaay lighter, and would probably weigh no more than a real human arm.(depending on the size of the person) It most likely will weigh a tad more, but with all the heavier metals focused around the shoulder, it will actually be a very balanced and agile prosthetic.
>>
>>21432303
Isn't adamantium workable though?
>>
>>21432602
by the best smiths yes, average joe nobody blacksmith no. you think just anyone could give wolverine his endoskeleton
>>
>>21432602

Well, in the comic book sense, the minerals and chemicals needed to create Adamanitum must be combined and held at liquid temperature, for once it hardens, its indestructible, and therefore unworkable.
>>
>>21432671
>>21432687
Then the D&D stuff must be adamantine.
>>
>>21432700

Indeed, it would seem so. I'm sure the Dwarves have some of that kicking around somewhere.
>>
On a tangent to the current discussion, I imagine aluminum would be known outside of Teegee as fool's mithril or something similar. (Though we haven't been exporting much of the stuff, I think some of it has found its way into the hands of foreign smiths.)
>>
>>21432162
Like I said it was a good story.

>>21432303
Well I would make the arm hollow and reinforce it with runes and enchantments. Though the fist would need to be solid we would also have to deal with temperature regulation so as not to damage the flesh on your shoulder. Also we would need to stop your heart for a bit when connecting the nerves to the socket. We can also make the socket so you can change out arms should you need to. Also the socket would have to be the really solid.

>>21433126
Implying we shouldn't be making sure this is a widespread thing.
>>
>>21433175

All very good points sir. I agree whole-heartedly.
>>
>>21433175
>>21433195

Actually, re-reading that, I still want to use as little magic as possible, and not have to layer that many enchantments over top of the metal. I think arm's bone structure will be solid, not hollow.

As for the operation of attaching my arm, I hope you and the Witch are good at your job.
>>
>>21433478
Well that;s up to you. Ok so arms bone structure will be solid, noted. Also what do you think about a crystal in the shoulder socket to act as a power supply as drawing all from you may be tiring. It would could refill power while you are asleep and it would try to draw from other places.
>>
>>21433556

Depends, I think I'd like to leave that sort of stuff out. I think just training and diligence will be enough for me, without using a crystal.

Fuel source!

If you guys are really going to let modern engines happen, that would open whole new avenues up vis-a-vis transportation and the eventual pollution.

Unless I'm mistaken, common method of travel is speed of horse on the surface (with the exception of those with winged friends), sail on the seas and steam beneath the mountains and earth.

trains could run on basic steam engines. anything personal is going to be limited unless we monopolize artificially made gasoline. i remember one person being summoned here with their car. (and with me just make it electric, would take longer to make but i can wait)

That was GearHeart, and it got cannibalized right away. I doubt there's much of it nowadays, regardless.

On a tangent, Olin probably drove a Prius. Wilhelm would love a car he could tinker with, but would more likely settle for something he could afford. Cerran (once familiar with vehicles and presumably managing to pas a driving test) would want a muscle car.

Oh, and we're on autosage. Just so you know.
