One year and eleven months ago, you were an Incubator. The Ninth Incubator.

Teleported here with twenty of your brethren in a desperate, last-ditch attempt to save the universe, your business is to establish contracts with as many eligible young women as you can.

And business is booming.
>>
>>21399465

Each Incubator has their own method of establishing a contract, each with his own unique twist to the process.

Some choose to approach their prospect through a dream, passing themselves off as an otherwordly being prone to fits of supreme generosity.

Others choose to follow the media's contemporary portrayal of fictional magical girls, acting like the ridiculous chirping blobs of fur that defecate sugary treats and gemstones(these Incubators you have long since chosen to cut yourself off from, and despite their attempts to reestablish contact, you have considered them dead to you).

A few - thankfully - choose to play up the Faustian Deal pastiche to the hilt, promising disenfranchised young women the justice - the power - that they deserve in order to take revenge on whoever they believe wronged them, in exchange for their souls. This was the approach you'd started out with, and for a while you thought it was a convenient way of going about things.

After all, there was nothing like making it known to the prospect that everything was downhill from then on - that they would have one last chance to do something significant with their pointless, worthless lives. You offered them a beautiful, meaningful death, instead of the slow, ignoble decay that they were currently on.
100% chance of establishing a contract, sure, and you didn't much mind that their life expectancies never went on longer than a week or so before they expired. As long as they gave the output you expected, you thought little else of them other than expendable. Walking biological wreckage.

That all changed when you established a contract with Mami Tomoe.

If you knew how to laugh at all, you probably would have.

An Incubator caring for a contractee. The very thought itself was hilarious, and borderline heretical.

[1/2]
>>
>>21399470

But back to your method. After that particular incident, you...adopted a more business-like approach to establishing contracts. You showed yourself politely and carefully to the prospect, and after waiting for them to settle down after the shock of seeing a talking mutant cat - presented your offer as straightforwardly and as professionally as you could.

You made it clear, right at the outset, what being a Magical Girl entailed. The possibility of Witchdom.

What the limitations of their offered wish was.

The possible impact such a contract would make on their lives, and what measures you have in place in order to make sure their transition from being a mundane human being to a mobile killing machine is smooth and hassle-free.

But most of all, you offered them a chance to refuse. A chance to walk away.

That was the most important thing that you learned from Mami Tomoe.

Sometimes, the only thing a prospect needed was help. A hot meal, a place to sleep, a listening ear.

Not all of these foolish little girls deserved being turned into a murderer.

It's with this in mind that you approach the young woman - the child - in her pajamas named Yuma Chitose, who is sitting on the freshly-trimmed grass near the duck pond. The girl watching the ducks with rapt attention, having long since run out of bread crusts to feed the beastly things.

Kyoko is still on the bench, but you know she's keeping watch. If you need her to help you with your pitch, you only needed to look towards her and she would come running.

Yuma Chitose, as it is, doesn't seem to be aware of your presence just yet. Even though you're practically a few feet away from her.

How do you make your approach?
>>
>>21399475

>most exciting time of the day is early!

lets start with the least threatening way possible, maybe just casually stroll in to her field of vision and act a bit surprised if/when she notices us, while keeping a respectable distance of course.
>>
>>21399475

Leap up onto the bench beside her. If she still doesn't notice, cough politely.
>>
>>21399475
Smoothly, like a cat walking up to someone it finds interesting for whatever reason,
Once she sees us and calms down or tries to pet us we can then talk to her and see if she is amenable to being a magical girl and willing to after she knows what the risks are
>>
>>21399475
Stroll in front of her, a few feet away, turn to face her, sit, and swishy swishy tail don't you want to touch it?

What? We are "Thanks Kyubey" now?

Anyway, let us casually approach Yuma. Greet her with "Greetings Yuma-san", pause and pretend to watch the avian lifeforms that are on the surface of the water and then give her the offer to become a magical girl. Point out that this would be a big change in her life which would most likely stay the same if she turn down our offer

You decide to take a different tack with your approach, at least in Yuma's case. She is young, younger than your typical prospect, at the impressionable age where a talking cat would be considered as more of a curiosity rather than a strange abberation of nature (or a horrifying hallucination). Certainly a bit easier to deal with than skeptical teenagers still on the cusp of puberty, but at the same time a bit more difficult to explain and impress the gravity of the situation to.

Well, you'll cross that bridge when you get to it. Right now, you're not completely sure if what she really needs is a contract, or just a place to stay, which you can probably provide.

You move directly in front of the girl, making sure your movements are slow, deliberate, relaxed. She makes a small, surprised noise at your appearance, one that she makes again as you sit down on your haunches as you look up at her, both your front feet placed firmly on the ground in front of you. Your tail flicking from side to side - and it's with a faint pulse of amusement that you notice her wide, green eyes follow its movement.

Humans can be so predictable sometimes.

"...You're a strange cat," She says after a moment, her brow furrowing at your appearance. "I've always seen cats around here, but...I've never seen one with ears like yours. Or a tail that...that poofy." It's without hesitation that she reaches out with a bandaged hand, and you allow the brief physical contact between her palm and the top of your head to take place. To her credit, she pets you carefully, gently, as if worried that she'd inadvertently hurt you. "You don't seem to have a collar, too...I wonder what you're called?"

simply because we should not rush this prospect, something might happen if we wait to long but getting her more comfortable with us at this point is a good boost to contract success. worst case either we get attacked by rival MG, or the father shows up.

The first contact between an Incubator and his prospect is always a delicate thing. No matter the Incubator's approach, it must be approached with tact, subtlety, and the knowledge that humans aren't exactly used to life forms resembling their local fauna exhibiting unnatural behavior such as sentience. Or talking.

"Incubatus Nobilis," are the first two words you pulsed directly into her mind, a pulse that her mind would interpret as something she'd heard in a voice especially tailored to sound trustworthy, innocent, pure. "Incubator in your language. But if you're trying to obliquely ask me to introduce myself, then my name is Kyuubey, Yuma Chitose."

A full minute of her looking at you in utter shock passes, her green eyes wide at you. She does not even notice one of the ducks waddling out of the pond and blundering past her, honking all the while. Despicable creature.

"You...you can talk?" The girl murmurs in surprise, in wonder. To her credit, she continues to pet you, as if trying to affirm your existence, as if this simple act had made it doubtful, a thing of suspicion. "And you...your name is Kyuubey?"

"Correct." You close one eye briefly as her hand gets a bit too close, but you do not angle or cant your head away. She's doing a good job of petting you so far.

"Kyuubey..." She murmurs your name, a small smile on her face, before she blinks again. "W-wait, how did you know my name?"

"I was told of it. A friend of yours brought you to my attention." You jerk your head slightly towards Kyoko's direction, and Yuma turns to glance at her. Your subordinate gives the prospect a smile and a wave.

[1/2]
>>
>>21400298

"Kyoko-neesan? She knows you too?"

"She does." You nod at her. "And she works for me as a Magical Girl. And she told me that you would make for a fine one, too."

Yuma's eyes grow the widest they'd ever been in.

"A...a magical girl? Kyoko-neesan's a magical girl--" She glances back at the crimson-haired Eversor, before whirling back to face you. "A-and she wants me to be one, too?"

Yuma pales slightly with indecision. "I...I don't...um..."

This is it. This is the opportunity you've been waiting for.

How do you make your pitch? How you do so will decide the proceedings from here on in.
>>
Honestly. It served us well so far and she still has a life to return to. She doesn't really fall into the no-life wreck category.
>>
>>21400311

I think our usual professional approach would be best.

We wouldn't want Sakura Kyouko to think we were going out of our way, or offering special treatment, here.
>>
>>21400311
Lead her gently
Let her ask any questions she wants to and answer her honestly, tell her that she has a choice whether or not to be a magical girl and that she should be sure that she wants to be one before saying yes
Do mention though that we will look after her very well as we do Kyoko and her friends

And I just realized this makes kyuubey sound like a pimp which I am not sure is a step up or down from what he really is
>>
>>21400311

Yuma told Kyouko she would like to "make her dreams come true". Make a pitch obliquely hinting towards that: this would be an opportunity to work towards those dreams, but it won't be easy.

Since this version of Kyubey seems more straightforward and sincere, this could be the moment to imply some of the risks.
>>
>>21400311
This >>21400352 seems best.
>>21400329
>She doesn't really fall into the no-life wreck category.
Her father IRONED her HANDS.
>>
>>21400311
Honestly. A little gentler, perhaps, than our regular pitches, due to her youth.
Answer her questions honestly and fully, and don't pull the punches when it comes to explaining what will be expected of her, of how much killing will be involved, and how death is assured. At best, she dies in the line of duty. At worst, one of her friends will have to come and kill her.
>>
>>21400311

Ask her what she wants from life and what she hopes to accomplish. What kind of mark would she want to leave on the world, that type of thing.

This QB appears to be more honest than his PMM counterpart, but he still has his priorities. If we make her think that becoming an MG is the best thing that she can do right now, she may be willing to overlook some petty consequences such as "3-year lifespan tops" and "becoming the very monster that you are contracted to fight".
>>
>>21400362
That just means she would be better off under child protection services, not turned into a no-hope litch. I believe Kyubey itself noted that it might just take care of her rather than contract her.
>>
>>21400329
Honesty is the way to go.
We don't want Kyoko blaming herself when Yuma gets hit with the brutal reality of being meguca.
It has to be her (fully informed) choice.
>>
>>21400311

present it like it is, it will fix most of the unhappy situations she is in now (and maybe even improve certain aspects dramatically?)

Kyoko told us the general direction of her was to help people, admirable for someone her age, she would be able to do that and perhaps even more

but everything has a downside, explain everything to her as gently as possible (but don't leave anything out) and answer any question truthfully.

Girl A obviously has some resentment towards incubators, more than anyone else, see to it that we don't accidentally push this one over that cliff by not informing her fully.
>>
>>21400376
The girls in this setting seems to last longer than that
Maybe 4-6 on average with outliers on both ends since kyuubey has got a retirement plan of sorts for his meguca according to Kharn
>>
>>21400362
Child Services could handle her case.
And remember that, as much as she denies it, Kyoko has an emotional connection to Yuma. That means a risk of inefficiency from Kyoko and possible Witching factor when Yuma needs to be retired.

Apparently there's enough Witches and Grief Seeds around to be able to support nearly 200 Magical Girls in this city alone.
With all of the changes from the PMM Canon, did we ever get confirmation that QB gets energy from a Puella Magi Witching out, or does he acquire it somehow through consuming used Grief Seeds?
>>
>>21400394
Uh
Kirika retired.
Or at least, half of her did.
>>
>>21400402
I think he gets both
Although we have seen him consume a grief seed before, not sure what happened to the actual seed afterwards however.
>>
>>21400412

No. Kirika WAS retired.

There's also apparently something where Meguca get taken off the duty roster and he makes 'em do office work for, like, one grief seed a month or something.
>>
>>21400412
That wasn't really what I meant

After all Kharn is technically retired and Still living, she gets her grief seed in the mail every month
>>
>>21400431
Can you imagien how many Megucas it would take to retire Kharn?
Of course one would shove her off to the depths of Bumfuckistan instead of retiring her the tradtional way.
>>
>>21400514

No, it's actually an established process. It's been mentioned a couple times.
>>
>>21400514
There is a difference between retiring someone and retiring because you are too old for this shit ( late teens for a meguca )
Kharn has done both it seems

Kyuubey quest is CURSED!
CURSED I TELL YOU
>>
>>21400384 >>21400347 >>21400329

You shake your head after a moment's consideration. "No," you begin. "Kyoko merely said that you would make for a fine Magical Girl. She only asked that I give you the choice to be one. And what you do with that choice is up to you, and no one else. Not me, and certainly not her."

Confusion muddles Yuma's expression, silence muffling the obvious questions she looks mere moments away from asking. It takes her a moment to finally spit one out, and it's the question that's rarely asked, and yet the most important. You find yourself impressed with her, and that is even rarer.

"Why me?"

Other prospects would not have bothered with such questions. They would have either jumped at your offer or simply asked for your terms. Never an explanation as to why.

When you answer, it's with frank honesty. Children, at the very least, appreciate such. They are still far too young to develop a sense of guile and mistrust so common among their older kin. They at least realize how important it is, beyond simple posturing and other bothersome contrivancies.

You tell her why. You tell her about what you know of her, about what Kyoko had told you about her, and what you think of her situation - as pitiful as it is. You have at least the decency not to bring light to her wounds, focusing instead on how difficult it must be to live in such a household. You tell her about how Kyoko wants her to be somewhere safer, while making it clear that your subordinate did not plead with you to make her a Magical Girl. That lie, at least, is something you feel comfortable with making.

By the time you've finished, her eyes are glistening with tears.

"Papa...Papa gets m-mad, but he doesn't really mean it. He...he just gets a bit too drunk, sometimes, but he always tucks me in and tells me he loves me." The girl inhales through her nose, and you force yourself not to wince at the sniveling sound she makes. "Mama...Mama gets angry too, but most of the time she just cries. Sometimes she hurts me, but she always says that it's so that when Papa does it, it won't hurt as much. It...it doesn't work. Not really."

You do not vocalize a reply, because you have none.

"What...what's it like being a Magical Girl? How...how do I become one?" She runs a pajama sleeve across her face. "Is...is it just like what I see on TV?"

Ah. Finally something you can respond to. You nod. "Mostly like that. You become one when you establish a contract with me - a contract of agreement between the both of us." You allow her to look confused once more. "If you agree to work for me as a Magical Girl, then I will grant you one wish. One single wish, and it can be anything in the world that you want." You tilt your head slightly to look at her. "Normally I'd say something about certain disclaimers regarding that wish, but as long as you keep it reasonable and not try to ask for something smart like more wishes, I can grant it."

It's here that her expression brightens, just like any other girl's would have at the mention of the wish. You do not begrudge her of this - in fact, it's a sign that things are going well.

"Anything I want...?" She turns back to Kyoko, who seems to flinch and nearly drop her smartphone onto the cold, hard pavement of the park's jogging track.

"Anything."

Yuma turns back to you, indecision and contemplation warring slightly across her features. When she speaks again, her voice is low, barely above a whisper.

"What...what did Kyoko-neesan wish for? Can...can I ask?"

"You may ask, but I cannot answer." You shake your head. "It's classified. Incubator-contractee confidentiality, I'm afraid. If you want to know, you'll have to ask her yourself."

Yuma pouts at this, briefly, before she smiles once more and begins to run her fingers through your fur. "You know, for a Magical Girl mascot, you talk like a businessman. It's...it's strange. I thought you'd be more, more..." she falters.

"...irritating?" You try, attempting to be helpful.

"Cuter," the green-haired girl finishes. "I thought you'd be cuter."

You try to ignore that bit, but somehow it stings a bit more than it should. You will yourself not to show it, however.

"What if I don't want to be a Magical Girl?" Yuma finally asks after a few moments, her voice carrying the tone of curiosity. Again, a good sign. It doesn't seem like she's against the idea of accepting the contract, just exploring her options. "The wish is nice and all, but...fighting monsters and stuff, isn't that dangerous?"

"It is dangerous, yes," You nod. "But being a Magical Girl, you will be fully equipped and trained to deal with the situation. Unlike the Magical Girls you see in anime, we do not send you into battle unprepared and without an idea of what to do. By the time you're in active duty, you'll be confident enough in your abilities that any danger will be manageable to a degree."

You gesture with an ear towards Kyoko. "Depending on your wish, Kyoko might be the one teaching you how to fight as a Magical Girl, and she's one of the best."

[3/4]
>>
>>21401082

You look up at Yuma. "And should you choose not to become a Magical Girl, then I will see to it, at least, that your situation improves. I won't bore you with the details, but rest assured that I will do what I can so that this..." You nod at her bandaged fingers. "...does not happen again. Think of it as a consolation gift from me, a small token of thanks for taking the time to listen to my offer."

The green-haired child seems to take this in stride, and when she looks back at you, her eyes seem to be much...older.

"You'll...you'll have Mama and Papa killed, won't you? If I say no?"

...Clever girl. Now you're very impressed.

How do you respond?
>>
>>21401086
"If it comes to that. I prefer to lead with words when possible, though some people aren't always as receptive as they should be."
>>
>>21401086
"Maybe. I admit, it's the simplest and fastest solution, though perhaps not the best one. I'm very certain that any Magical Girl I send will have no trouble with the job. As I would expect of you, if you agree to the contract.
"If their well-being is that important, then I can see about alternative methods. Understand that I cannot work miracles; people still have free choice, to make mistakes and choose badly."
>>
IsOkay, so Kyubey planned on killing Yuma's parents and she guessed right. However the mutant cat face is unreadable.

Answer her with a question: Do you want me to kill them? It wouldn't be too difficult really.
>>
>>21401086

it is not a good idea to imply we'll kill her parents if she doesn't contract, i would be for asking her if she has a better solution to stop things from happening but there is little we can do without her forming a contract.

our way is pretty much 100% guaranteed that her parents won't lay a hand on her again. not counting foster parents though...

She's very likely perceptive enough that she could work it out on her own if we give her a few more hints.
And then, if she does contract, it'll be all the more binding for having been done with fully informed consent.
>>
>>21401151

I'm thinking aversion therapy for Dad to get him off the sauce and maybe hormonal tweak to Mom to make her less violent.

No, we won't say that we would because that would be stupid. QB is many things but stupid is not one of them.

We tell her that there is no reason to resort to violence since all it would take is a call to the child services. It's not going to be hard to convince them that they were abusing her since Yuma's hands are covered in bandages.

After that, we could arrange to have her adopted into a nice family or force her parents to behave if Yuma wants to stay with them.

You confirm your suspicions with a nod. "It would be the quickest and easiest way to deal with things, yes. But not both of them, no - I'd have let you choose who would be left alone." She starts to pet you again, a small, sad smile on her face, and you briefly wonder just how damaged the girl is. "It will be taken care of professionally, of course. An unfortunate accident. No evidence of foul play, no witnesses, nothing to cast suspicion over you or your remaining parent."

She is silent at this, but she does not stop her ministrations. "Consider me impressed, however. Not only are you asking the right questions, but you are very perceptive, as well."

That gets a smile from Yuma. "Mama...she likes to lie about the reason why Papa beats me," She says, taking one of your ears gently and brushing her fingers against the golden hoop it's threaded through. "I learned what a liar looks like. What a liar sounds like." She looks at you. "You're not a liar. And Kyoko-neesan isn't, too. I don't like being lied to."

That's...good. It's lucky that you chose to be honest, then.

"I don't want either of them to die, though." She says after a moment's silence. "Mama and Papa, they...they love each other very much. Even I can tell that. Sometimes, Mama cries about how I made Papa hate her. Sometimes, Papa hurts me because I made him hurt Mama." She winces slightly at the memory. "I want them to love each other again. It's my fault, after all."

A moment more, before she nods at you, seemingly having internally arrived at a decision.

"One last question. Can...can Magical Girls die?"

How do you respond?
>>
>>21401136
I second this. Turn this around and throw it at her.
>>
>>21401515

"Everything dies, even the Universe. It's just more difficult for a magical girl."
>>
>>21401515
Yes. Everything living can die.
>>
>>21401515
"Anything that lives can die, Yuma Chitose."
>>
Perhaps suggest that recruiting unwilling magical girls is very taboo, and even if she doesn't want to contract we will respect her desire to keep her parents alive if she wants to.
>>
>>21401515
"The average Magical Girl under my employ will die in the line of duty within 3 to 4 years. If you are among the lucky ones, it will be while fighting and protecting your fellow Magical Girls and innocent bystanders. If not, then it will be your friends giving you one last mercy."

We're actually very open about the long-term prospects of a Magical Girl, given what's been said of the Magi Primer.
>>
>>21401515
"Everyone can die. You would be fighting monsters after all. Unlike in the shows you watch, when a Magical Girl isn`t careful, sometimes the monsters can win, too.
You would, however, also save people from monsters by destroying them. Magical Girls fight, so the normal people can live peacefully."

>>

>>
>>21401577
I think we should tell her about the danger of Witching out. Sure, she'll be told about it once she contracts and reads the Primer, but I think she should be told before contracting.
>>
>>21401800
She is a clever girl. I somehow expect her to ask where the monsters do come from.
>>
>>21401577

You nod. "Everything dies sooner or later, Yuma Chitose. You are fighting monsters, after all - and unlike the shows you watch, sometimes the monsters win. Sometimes the Magical Girl herself becomes the monster too, if she's not careful."

Yuma doesn't seem to be shaken by this, so you forge on. "But the important thing here is that by fighting the monsters - and destroying them - you save people. Countless lives are saved with every monster destroyed. Magical girls fight, kill and die so that normal people can live peacefully. So that your parents can live peacefully."

More silence. She doesn't seem to be saying no, but it's better if you fill the quiet. "I would ask of you to keep in mind that this is something that you do not walk away from, Yuma Chitose. There is no way to cancel a contract. If it is established, it is established permanently. Nothing, bar the Magical Girl's death, can break this agreement. So decide carefully."

It's than that you try to lighten the situation. "Do not worry about hurting my feelings by refusing the contract. It is taboo for us to force an unwilling girl into an agreement." You shake your head, being reminded of simpler, messier times.

"That's just bad for everyone involved, really. Better to make things clear-cut. If you have any misgivings or anything of the sort, do not hesitate to say no."

Yuma nods, and when she replies, even Kyoko looks up to listen.

"I'll do it, Kyuubey-san." Her words firm, her eyes hard. She pulls herself up to her feet. "I want to be a Magical Girl. I...accept your contract."

[1/2]
>>
>>21402099

She blinks as Kyoko places a hand on her shoulder, and she looks up at the taller, older girl. Your subordinate smiling down at her, with a faint hint of melancholy.

"Kyoko-neesan, I--" Yuma starts.

"Ssh. I heard everything. Well, most of it." Kyoko replies, glancing at you and nodding. "Just let me give her one last chance to make up her mind, yeah? No harm in it, right?"

You nod back. Of course there wasn't any harm in it.

You already know what her final answer would be, after all.

"Now, uh, I heard what Kyuubey told you about being a Magical Girl and all that stuff, and while he's mostly correct, there's some things--"

"I know. I know there's a lot more I need to learn, Kyoko-neesan." Yuma cuts your subordinate off. "But...this way, Mama and Papa can love each other without me around, right? And I can help Kyoko-neesan, at least!"

"..." Kyoko frowns at this, glaring at you. You didn't even need to probe her thoughts - the look itself asked you, in rather colorful language typical of the redhead, about what sort of nonsense you filled the girl's brains in. You would have shrugged if you could.

"I don't really need help, Yuma-chan." Kyoko tries to work up a smile. "L-look, let me just talk to your Papa, okay? I can straighten things out. You don't have to be a Magical Girl for that..."

Yuma shakes her head, pouting. "I want to help!"

Kyoko lets out a sigh, before turning to you and nodding. Despite the fact that she'd jus tried to dissuade your prospect, she flashes you a small smile and a thumbs up, as if pleased with herself in a rather weary, resigned way.

Perhaps she changed her mind suddenly, deciding against having Yuma turned into a Magical Girl. Or maybe she just wanted to make sure that Yuma had someone to help her decide, someone who would help them say no when they were afraid to. Something you remember that Kyoko didn't really have - in fact, her contract was the quickest one you'd ever established. She jumped on the chance, no hesitation whatsoever.

"Alright. Guess I can't say anything else, then." Your subordinate ruffles Yuma's hair, eliciting a squeak from your prospect. "Go on. Make your wish. Become a Magical Girl. Kyuubey's waiting."

Yuma nods, and steps forward. Facing you down, maintaining eye contact with you.

"I'm ready, Kyuubey-san." She says, slightly out of breath. "I want to do it. I want to make a Wish. I want to be a Magical Girl."

Success.

"Very well, then." You give her a slow nod, and ever so gently, you reach up towards her with your ears - the tips brushing against the center of her chest. Briefly making contact where her Soul Gem, once manifested, should be coaxed out of.

"What wish shall your Soul Gem shine brightly with, Yuma Chitose?"

She murmurs her wish. It is a simple one. A childish one. But not an easy one, not by any standard.

But you are the Ninth Incubator, and this is not Amateur Hour.

Her wish is granted and her Soul Gem - glowing a brilliant emerald green - is perfectly formed even before she could crumple to the ground, rendered unconscious by the pain. Kyoko proves quick enough to catch her, at least.

"...That's a wrap, I guess." Kyoko murmurs as she cradles the limp, unconscious form of Chitose Yuma to her chest. She glances down at you, and you feel her worry pulsed to you in a weak, unfocused blurt. "Er...Kyuubey? Are you alright?"

You take a moment to reply, clasping the newly-formed Soul Gem with both ears. "Fine," You say, inwardly horrified at how weak you sounded. "...Her wish was a bit complicated, but I managed to find a suitable workaround. I merely need to rest for a while." You make to move forward, before crumpling into the grass, face-first. Perhaps...perhaps now would be a good time to do so, you note. At least the grass is comfortable. Maybe an hour or two would be enough.

"...If you say so. I'll, uh, bring Yuma back to headquarters then, yeah?" Kyoko nods towards the sleeping girl in her arms. "Have her sleep off the effects and everything. Er, what's her rank, anyway?"

You open one eye to look up at Kyoko Sakura, inwardly debating if you should tell her - before letting out a sigh. She might as well know.

"Culexus," You say. "Rank Culexus. You're right, she does have potential."

"Whoa, a Culexus?" Kyoko blinks, grinning. "Wow. I guess that's cool, but..." she frowns. "H-hey, does that mean she'll have to wear that skull suit thing every day?"

"Not until after her training, which will take a while." You reply, closing your eye once more. "Don't let me detain you, Kyoko Sakura. Go on and get Yuma Chitose back to headquarters. And tell Mami Tomoe to drive over here to fetch me as soon as she can."

"Right." A small nod from Kyoko, and she walks off, leaving you to suffer alone.

Being an Incubator is suffering, and it is not as easy as it was at first.

You open your eyes again for what seems like the final time before you fall unconscious - and this time a young woman with pink hair stands in front of you, in a pink dress with a rather frilly, poofy skirt.

The last thing you see is her smile as she reaches towards you with a claw-tipped hand stained with blood.

Six or seven skulls?

So:

Sayaka and Kyoko have broken up and hate each other (and one or more of them has witched out), Jyubey has declared war on QB, Oriko has contracted with Jyubey, Iori has contracted to pursue yandere relationships, Mami has gone rogue and has been missing for two weeks, Midori has been gifted a golden weapon, and the Kong corporation has gone bankrupt as will no longer be making alcohol as a result of corporate shuffling.

The good news that averages the Skull Alert level back to 6-7 is that Chiaki's new prosthesis can now synthesize any type of alcohol in the world. It also emits an energy field that keeps away small, biting insects.
>>
>>21402645
That's interesting, then.
That means that it's in QB's interests to farm Witches when possible, so that their familiars become Witches and can provide Grief Seeds (maybe the purpose of Walpurgisnacht), and it's actually more in his interest to preserve the lives and efficiency of his Magical Girls; he needs them to use the Grief Seeds so he can turn them into energy, and making new Magical Girls cuts into his quota and reserves.
There's probably also diminishing returns if you just contract a girl only for her to Witch out. It takes more energy to create a Magical Girl than the energy received from a Grief Seed.
>>
>>21402660

Now I'm wondering if it was because of making a Culexus or because Yuma's wish was just that complicated

I think that witches in this setting are a lot more powerful that the ones in the series. Remember how in the Mami flashback that the witch Charlotte had multiple cake snake bodies in her barrier? That might mean that they give more grief seeds when they die.

Now that we are on the subject of witches, Charlotte really was the only one we ever saw in this setting right? And we never saw how she died because Mami and Sayaka decided to escape. Makes me wonder if info surrounding witches is something that Deculture is actively trying to hide from us.

There was also the strange witch-creature in Thread The First, which... only adds more mysteries.
