Returning to the second level of the castle, Rubyleaf, Fig'Tard, and Dwayne the Retainer helped a group of Orc adventurers escape the castle in exchange for much needed information about traps ahead. Going south they faced a giant spider, who was burned by Fig'Tard and brutally hacked to death by "Deadly" Dwayne. Meanwhile, Jenai spied on the mysterious Samael, finding that he's got his fingers in a lot of pies and is sending men to begin the mysterious Project Serpent, the first stage being the setting up of a Purfumery and Dyer's Shop in Mistamere Town. He then met up with the local thieves' gang, finding their big boss is "Sammy" and getting a few offers of work. Further exploring, the party found an illusory pit trap, and beyond it a treasure chest designed to drop snakes on whoever opened it. They defeated them and won the treasure and a magically trapped yet valuable creepy monkey statue. They defeated a group of Gnolls, and Fig'Tard leveled up, unlocking the doors on the first floor.

No problem there, I've been watching True Blood while running the game a few times. I'm up to Season 4 when the writers got Changeling and Mage.

I'm taking back any guilty feelings I had for being so cautious/pedantic last time!

>>
>>21427443
You should have just explained it to your boss. "Sorry, I need B/X leave.... well, it is a human right! .... yes, 20 hours a week will be fine."
>>
>>21427462
>totally doesn't work at a movie theater where bursts of activity are inter-spaced by long boredems
>whistles suspiciously
>>
What time do you want to get started?

And on a more party note, shall we continue expanding the pool of retainers?
>>
>>21427484
Well, depends what you want to do. Dealing with the cave goblins would be fairly simple, but you'd probably want more men to go to level 3 or face the unlocked room on level 1.

Oh, and since it's a 3 level dungeon, any requests for what you want to do afterwards? I'm thinking of populating In Search of the Unknown.
>>
>>21427484
Well im fine with whenever to start, if you want to get going right now i wont object.

pool of retainers as in more muscle to take hits for us? I dunno if we need to, we usually just convert a PC into an NPC and make sure they don't die. haha the other side of this is if we bring more people along less loot / xp, also if they get killed and we keep replacing them that could lead to the towns people treating us poorly due do "death at our hands"
>>
>>21427522
>populating In Search of the Unknown
I just started playing this type of Dnd a few days ago, I have no experience regarding this type of game, and I am explainably excited at the prospect of this.

I vote for cave goblins.
>>
>>21427522
Any B-series adventure except The Lost City is fine. I like B4 but I ran it very recently, so I honestly can't play it.

I think Figgy is on sabbatical, so we ain't going through the doors. I'm for rocking Level 3 like a hurricane.
>>
>>21427527
It's not about them taking hits, it's about the party's throw weight in combat. The more attacks we make each round, the fewer we take in return, if you see what I mean?
>>
>>21427596
I understand, sorry this is all rather newish to me.
could we use our absent party members to help them progress without them being here?
>>
>>21427618
That's up to the referee. I generally don't like taking someone else's character along, unless they've been abandoned.
>>
>>21427618
Sure, they can just take them over when they get here
>>
>>21427633
no worries I have honey we can use on em if things go south!
>>
Okay, so Rubyleaf, EchoWinds, and Dwayne would go. Who else do you want to bring along?
>>
>>21427636
Awesome! well since the gang's mostly here why not explore level 3 a bit?
>>
Well, OK. If the preferred solution is to haul PCs along, that is fine by me. I do wonder about them getting full XP, 'cause they're not really making their own decisions, are they?

Ruby will remind Dwayne to buy some Platemail before we set out. As we're risking other PCs, I think the less risking slaughter of cave goblins is the right place to start. We bring everyone.
>>
>>21427662
Okay. Going to warn you that level 3's mapped out by me on a piece of paper. I probably should have done it on the computer, but anyway. I'll try to make navigation as simple as possible and be specific about the room layouts.
>>
>>21427659
Gruber no question poor lads not had any action since we last saw him

I think Jenai is on a stakeout of the local thiefs association so hes busy

RDJ would be cool to have along with his daggers and sleep spells

and Fig o course for he always wishes to increase his hoard.

I think we should start dragging Street figher man along everywhere too, we should level him until he can cast heal spells.

RDJ have him do his sleepy spell thing
>>
>>21427710
im starting to think that goblins would be better fodder to try out our remote piloting on our mates and also to stall till they can join us.

if you hand mapped it it's gonna be awesome i dont want to cheat them of that.

Okay. There are the two safe entrances down to level 3, the east one guarded by Goblins and the west one guarded by Kobolds. There's the south way, but it looks like a pit trap at the bottom

What?

"Goblins."

He tightens his grip on his bow, and heads stealthily towards the goblin passage.
>>
Oh, wait! We need oil. Burning oil. That burns.
>>
>>21427883
Alright. You head down the stairs, down to a 30' by 40' room (I say east-west then north-south). There's an ornate door down in the south wall, and two paths out, ten feet away on the east and west walls. There's a fire in the room, and 10 goblins eating a stew and drinking from simple wooden cups
>>
>>21427930
I still have 1-2 flasks I think.
>>
>>21427953
Sneakin.

Do I get close enough to lob a flask of oil into their fire? If so, would that turn their fire into a conflagration?
>>
>>21427978
Might start a bit of a fire, but this being a stone building it won't be that bad. Probably would distract a few of them for a while, putting out any furs that catch light.

>>
>>21429584
I would think that we hauled the goblin back to town (or at least out of the keep). Not sure how enlightened Mistmere is, but in the worst case they should still accept the necessity of questioning PoWs.
>>
>>21429457
>>21429479
>>21429457
"I'll let the horrifying elf have you for her forest meal if you don't cooperate!" I say in common, mostly sure the goblin won't understand it. Mostly to bug Rubyleaf. "No, you're right. Why not see what HE has to offer US?" I let Rubyleaf take over the questions.

"Let's take him outside - I mean, there's no reason not to give SFM a decent burial while we're questioning him. "

I whisper into the dwarves' ears - "Let's have the goblin dig SFM's grave, somewhere out in the woods, with enough space for two - and suggest that, unless he cooperates, we'll be burying him alive in it."
>>
>>21429620
well in that case we are in town I will spend the five days constructing an item or two.

>>21429636
"Nao dat seems to be a goldpiece idea, but ima thinkin SFM would rather be burried in his church's mausoleum insteada in da woods." We canna haul teh coblin back ta town with us for some more infer."

Once In town I facilitate burrying SFM in his church's tomb and then donate his items (keeping the oil, rope, wolfsbane, and a large sack) to the curch for the next adventure they turn out to use.

I then purchase 2 more mirrors and enough leather (guessing a leather armor's worth and save the leftovers for something else) to make a helm with one mirror eye level for me and with a mirror slightly above that one facing out so that I can see forward through the reflections. I spend the time practicing with it to make sure I can retain my mobility and dex.
>>
>>21429620
I'm not sure they accept goblins as people necessarily.

The Goblin says that he doesn't know much else. To the west are the kobolds, and they don't get along. Sometimes goblins who go south into the natural cave system disappear, so they avoid there too. He thinks Bargle can send out his spirit to spy on people, because sometimes he's seen him wandering around while the chief's been talking to him in another room.
>>
>>21429584
>>21429620

Then I backhand it, and say that is the reward for failure. Then I give it another gold piece, and say that we want it to work for us, safer work than being murdered by adventurers. can I start learning goblin?

Once in town, I guess we have some rooms or a small house we rent?

I purchase rations, 4 flasks of oil, 1 vial of holy water (just in case) and some candies to help me chat up Aleulla in my spare time,

Ruby will go with the mirror classic. Getting turned to stone would be OK so long as she doesn't look silly at the time. Periscope helmets indeed.

She also wants five flasks of oil.

And the party should stock up on retainers. Or at least Ruby, if the others are going to be like Dwayne. (Echo has great CHA, too, so he should get a mook.)
>>
>>21429871
He's called Gurx. But now I've decided the goblin leader is, like Ghaddafi, going to have an all female bodyguard

The goblin language is mostly beatings. You're doing quite well!
>>
>>21429905
is that what Charisma is for? i was never really sure about that.
>>
>>21429969
High Charisma means you can have more retainers and they get better morale. It's one of the most important stats in this edition, and it won't be a "dump" until 2E turns up.
>>
>>21429952
Though my character doesn't necessarily LIKE beating goblins outside of combat, he is dedicated to learning the language.

Can Gurx be considered to be "tamed/converted" to join us after a little while? I think we should kill his leader before trusting him to join us, but after that..
>>
>>21429969
Yeah, highest charisma determines morale, as well as helping with NPC reactions.

I just have terrible sleep habits. Yeah, I work nights sometimes.

You arrive at the caves and head to the room where you fought the goblins a while ago. It's 20' by 50', has two entrances, one on the west wall 10' from the south, one on the east wall flush with the north wall, and an unexplored exit on the north wall, flush with the west wall. The passage there continues 20 feet and turns west. You think the remaining goblins and their leader will be down there

Rolled 14 + 1

Echo retreats and passes a shortsword to Chuck who rushes to take his place

Rolling for chuck hit.
>>
>>21430929
"Echo! Dwayne! Get back!"

As soon as Round 3 begins, I shoot the goblin king again.

"Echo, stay behind the others - you've got reach on your weapon"

>>don't you?
>>
Rolled 4 + 1

Rolled 5, 10 = 15

He's still alive, down to 2hp. He took the 4 damage
>>

No idea. DM?
>>
Rolled 20

>>21430944
"Die, you bastard, DIE!"

shooting the goblin king.
>>
>>21430959
I don't think reach is a thing. He's got a crossbow though
>>
Rolled 7 + 1

>>21430965
Yeah, I just don't want him going to fewer than 2hp. There's not much margin for error there! Keith attacks, if Ruby and Dwayne switch places this round can they both attack? If just one gets a swing, I'd rather it's Dwayne.
>>
>>21430997
Sure, sounds reasonable
>>
Rolled 6

>>21430976

damage on the goblin king
>>
Combat in Classic is very abstract. Generally there's a melee line, plus supporting combatants. Just what can be done from a supporting position is up to the referee (though I've never known anyone who allowed dagger thrusts).
>>
Rolled 13, 15 = 28

I'm not sure what's reasonable.
Dwayne attacks with the first die. If Ruby can also attack, she uses the second.
>>
Rolled 4

Dwayne's damage, Ruby's efforts may be irrelevant.
>>
>>21431023
I think of a pithy remark, but barring that, I say
"Eat shit, you stupid axe-wielding fuck."
>>
>>21431023
The arrows strikes clean and kills the goblin king.

>>21431026
I have it depend on the terrain, number of enemies, and so on. Usually in a dungeon you have a choke point so that's how it goes, but sometimes supporters can be at risk
>>
>>21431040
And the other bodyguard is dead. There are 7 unconscious goblins left.

The king drops his axe, and in the sacks are 100sp, 50gp, a key, and a bottle of pink fluid
>>
>>21431075
Snag the key. Stroll over to the sleeping goblins - sigh.

"Well. What do we do with these?"
>>
>>21431075
12 XP or 6. And 10 gp is the share
>>
>>21431075
"Oie! I remember there was a room in this place sealed up wik a lock that Jenai wot was gonna pick." Picks up key "mebbeh thats wot this was fer"

Have RDJ in typical RDJ fashion spirit up the bottle of pink liquid
>>
>>21431106
>typical RDJ fashion spirit up the bottle of pink liquid
and examine it for himself with his magic water
>>
>>21431107
>>21431100
You read my mind. Shall we go check it out?
>>
>>21431100
Ruby grits her teeth. "I don't have much time for the bodyguard. The others... I say we truss them up, haul them to the surface, and release them in ten minute intervals while we have lunch. Best bring their chief's head to prove there's no point in them hanging about, though."
>>
>>21431117
The magic water glows a warm red, like the colour of lips or blood.
>>
>>21431139
Why don't we try to make them into our work detail? I'm sure if we promise them riches and wealth, they won't just go back to killing. We might be able to civilize them, after a fashion.
>>
>>21431139
who gets the axe?
>>
>>21431176
"I find this interest of yours a little unhealthy, Jenai, but I suppose it's no worse than my acquiring human henchmen."
>>
>>21431198
It's two handed, so it would be a waste for Fig'Tard given his magic shield
>>
>>21431140
oo. that might be bad.
>>
>>21431223
You know that the Church of Mistamere will help with identifying magic items.
>>
>>21431215
Echo, then?
>>
>>21431253
"Let's patch up our fellows a bit, and see that locked room on the way out. These goblins - let's see if they want to work for a new boss. I could use some bodyguards."
>>
>>21431215
id be happy to use it, and take it to mist to have it identified.

Need to heal up too. did we interogate the goblins yet?
>>
>>21431298
Fine.
>>
>>21431176
Free tunneling crew, i like it!

"Wik wot you done wif the other un I'll help ya out wik that"
>>
>>21431298
"souns lok a roite plan wif me"
>>
>>21431304
No. They could be useful, the bodyguards fight as 2HD creatures (ie +1 to hit)
>>
>>21431253
DM, I've got to go for about an hour. I do want to continue with the party - I'd do the following:

Carefully try to get the goblins to be a work crew, curbing their murderous tendencies. Using force and not force as necessary, spending gold as required. I use my wisdom and int to know if and when the endeavor functions, and when to just cut my losses and let the bastards go separately.

Inspect the door, then if I am sure of NoTraps, use a key.
>>
Since I've already put it on your sheet, Man-Cleaver is a +1 weapon
>>
>>21431360
>>21431366
I don't try to get the bodyguards to be work-crew. I get them to be supervisors/whip crackers for the work crew and bodyguards/meatshields for us.

thanks for running - hope to see you Monday.
>>
>>21431366
You open the door to the 15' room. There's a treasure chest, but you notice the lid is skewed in a funny way. You think its trapped, possibly with something spring-loaded held down by the lid so if it's opened you get hit

Echo and Ruby, you notice a secret door on the eastmost part of the north wall
>>
>>21431409
I probably won't be on tomorrow, but the day after I'll be able to play.
>>
>>21431366
I'm running out of steam (still ill). We might be better to break and do a tidy-up when Jenai returns.
>>
>>21431371
It's DWARF cleaver. ;D See you guys later!
>>
>>21431434
Sure. Just got this trapped chest to deal with anyway
>>
>>21431444
so hour break then? You okay with this DM? I know you said you had limited time
>>
>>21431551
Ugh, sorry, didn't see (or think about?) the one hour bit. I'm mildly restored now, and can push on to completion.
>>
>>21431583
Yeah, it would leave us about 40 minutes to finish up.

Anyway, the trapped chest. What's your plan?
>>
>>21431583
RIGHT THEN! 10ft pole poke at the clearly trapped chest! After pushing everyone back out of the room.
>>
>>21431371
thank you for adding it to muh sheet!
>>
>>21431602
I think this is wrong but can't work out a better plan. Hope it works out.
>>
>>21431602
Lifting the lid, a spring-loaded blade swings out. Fortunately you're all out of the range of its arc. Within the chest are 500cp, 200sp and 100gp. You each get 21gp and divide the rest among everyone else
>>
>>21431634
you mean you hope nothing pops out of that hidden door >_>
>>
>>21431668
>everything went better than expected!

I collect the blade by way of small sack and my share of of the loot.

Then i go over and take a peek at the hidden door.
>>
>>21431668
Glad to be wrong! So, about that secret door. Is the mechanism obvious, or is it just clear that there's a door there?
>>
>>21431697
You can tell there's a door there. You think it slides, and there's no obvious handholds on it
>>
Rolled 5

btw the thread appears to be sageing and on page 4
>>21431720
Stone cunning?
>>
>>21431732
You already stonecunninged that it was there, and if there was a mechanism between you and the elf you'd find it. You do have stone spikes though
>>
>>21431745
Not sure what they do but heck ill use em!

"Lets see wots behind door numbha 1" I mumble breaking out my toolkit
>>
>>21431720
So we can kinda wobble it by hand, but don't have the leverage to move it? This can be solved with iron spikes.
>>
>>21431732
Dang. Just remember if it disappears, the twitter is @CastleGygarDM, and I won't be on tomorrow.
>>
>>21431760
Yeah

>>21431759
Like as a handle on the door
>>
>>21431778
gotcha, I start pounding one in with a hammer then!
>>
>>21431771
The twitter account is noted down on our adventurers' notes page for redundancy.

>>21431778
OK. We knock in a couple of spikes to serve as handles, pause and listen at the door - if it's quiet, we'll slide it open. If there's noise, panic 'cause we've totally given ourselves away.
>>
>>21431792
After a while you manage to get it in far enough to be a hand hold. Sliding the door open you see a long hallway, and to your right (the east) is a door. There is a turn to the west at the end of the hall
>>
>>21431832
Check door for use, then listen.
>>
>>21431860
The door can be opened. Looking through, you realise it's the southwest entrance to the room where you defeated the goblin king
>>
>>21431878
Huh. OK, let's go down to the end f the hall.
>>
>>21431901
It's a bit of a long walk, but eventually you find yourself in a 30' square room. In the middle of the west wall is a 10' passageway leading to the room where you fought all the goblins earlier
>>
>>21431930
"seems dis hole place is intrerconnoted eh Ruby?"

I remark as I search the room
>>
>>21431948
There's nothing here but a few hides and the charred remains of a chair
>>
>>21431948
"Like a warren."

There are 2 more exits to this room, right?
>>
>>21431979
This room has only the place you came from and an exit west, to where the big fight happened
The room west has unexplored exits to the south where the goblin reinforcements came from and to the west, but remember you're still wounded from the fight with the goblins
>>
>>21432007
I say we pack out our team and heal up for a few days.
>>
>>21432022
deal
>>
>>21432037
Alright. Since Dwayne leveled after his first adventure, I'm thinking the other ones get their first level too.
>>
Rolled 27

>>21432065
:D!

awesome I'm thinking to spec Chuck out as a Thief, so he'll trade in his plate for leather and I will work on getting the dents out of my armor while i rest up.

Also if we can drop by the church to identify our special items, the potion and any more about the axe
>>
>>21432149
The priest examines the items. "I've seen a potion like this before, brought back by the fighter who recovered Aleena's body. It's a healing potion. The axe is clearly magical, but I do not think there are any special enchantments on it"
>>
>>21432225
thankyou priesty people

Alright we rest up then what? where do we go now?
>>
>>21432264
I'm going to take a shower soon and head off. I think when there's a few more people in the thread, you should put your money into the Honey Pot fund, to dig out under the hive, make the work building, and later on expand it into a tavern.
>>
>>21432340
DM, you've lost your name.
I'm not really here, I'm just checking in. 20 gobbos, way to go!
>>
>>21432340
I will do that thusly then. DM can i start getting a work crew together and sech? or did you want to break here for the day?
>>
>>21432373
you have a new hat Fig
>>
>>21432373
Bah. I take it off when I reply to other threads and forget to put it back on again.
>>
>>21432374
I'm thinking we'll finish up. See you all all Tuesday (I think, it'll be tuesday night/wednesday morning for me)
>>
>>21432387
>New hat
I don't think that Treygard here would let me wear that hat in the dungeon. I also don't think it's gonna work. :3 But thank you! Maybe we can go snorkling. See you lot Tuesday
>>
>>21432432
Sounds great to me. thanks for the awesome time once again!

Night DM!
