Alright, let's get this mother on the road. Cloud game (basically, MMO with the huge advantage of human referees rather than machines), Labyrinth Lord PBP starts here.

Want to play? You bet you do! Roll 18d6 for your character's abilities (they're coming down S/D/C/I/W/Ch) in your opening post. Then we'll figure out what their character class is and name them.

Rules are at http://goblinoidgames.com/labyrinthlord.html.

Want to referee? I know you do! Register at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ADSUEg96TKXsUsxliyF6ZzMhfOO4WY4Dumu4AGK4ylA/edit. You can still play in my sessions, 'cause that's just how the Cloud rolls!
>>
Come on, I won't try to kill your characters.

(Character death just kinda happens in this edition.)
>>
OK. While I wait, some advice from Uncle Gary on the game:

TIPS TO THE PLAYERS
It often helps for beginning players to have advice on how to play D&D. Many points are overlooked by novices in their eagerness to get on with the adventure, The following points are given to help these players.
Most importantly, players should be organized and cooperative. Each player should have complete information on his or her character easily on hand and should supply the DM with this information quickly and accurately if asked. As parties will usually involve a variety of alignments and classes, players should work together to use their abilities effectively. Arguing among players will cause delays, attract monsters, and often result in the deaths of some or all of the members.

Cooperation should also be given to the DM. He or she is the judge of the game and his or her decisions are final. If a player disagrees, he or she should calmly state why, and accept whatever the DM decides. Shouting, crying, pouting, or refusing to accept decisions only angers the other players. The game should be fun for all involved. Not everything will go the way players want it.
Planning is another important part of play. Players should be well equipped, comparing each member’s list and balancing the items on each. No character should be overburdened nor under-equipped. This may mean sharing the costs of extra items. Rope, oil, torches, spikes, and other useful items should always be carried. Plans should be considered for encountering monsters and casting spells.
>>
Caution is also necessary and is a part of planning. A party that charges forward without preparation is almost certainly doomed. Danger should be expected at any moment and from any direction, possibly even from one’s own party. Lying and trickery are not unknown. Cautious play will help avoid many (but not all) tricks and traps and may save a life. However, too much caution is as dangerous as too little. Many instances will require bold and quick actions on the part of the players, before all is lost.
Above all a player must think. The game is designed to challenge the minds and imaginations of the players. Those who tackle problems and use their abilities, wits, and new ideas will succeed more often than fail. The challenge of thinking is a great deal of the fun of the game.
>>
Bump. If something is unclear about this introduction, feel free to ask questions.
>>
PbP gaming is shit.

Admittedly, you may have been doing it wrong. PBP would be a nightmare with 3.x/pf or 4e.

>>21445648
No problem. I think we may be waiting a little for other players anyway.
>>
>>21444559
I really want to, but I post infrequently enough that I would only end up slowing down other players when we inevitably interact.
Hooray! Old-school gaming!
>>
>>21446273
I'm a believer in keeping a chat window open (typically a google doc, so you can have sitting notes as well as a discussion) and only using the thread for "calling". If that would work for you, anon, roll 'em!

If it won't - keep on the lookout for people doing Grea/tg/ary sessions in other formats. I doubt PBP will be the only technology used.

I, um, guess you would make an OK Cleric.
>>
It is starting to get late and I still don't see enough players about. If I have at least three ready to go by half-past, we'll play a short session. Otherwise, those that are rolled can still be registered and get the minimum session XP of 50. (Other referees may award things differently, that's up to them, but I think players who turn up with the intention of playing should get something if the session falls through.)
>>
Rolled 1, 1, 1, 6, 2, 1, 1, 6, 4, 4, 2, 3, 3, 3, 6, 4, 5, 2 = 55

Don't say that! Let's see

Your options are Cleric, Fighter, Magic-User, Thief, Dwarf, Elf, or Halfling. (D is modified F, E is F/M-U, and H is kinda F/T)

You were right too, Dex is 9. That removes some possibilities.
Thief with no Dex nor Intelligence is hardly sustainable.

Frankly, I'll try something fun, and go monk. Should be able to find something fun to do with that !

>>21447413
I've just been informed that this was a terrible oversight by Spooky. LL does state how much cash you get, and it's 3d8x10gp!

The dexterity and intelligence are fine for Thief. They don't impact on play all that much.

And, of course, Monk is simply not an option.

I guess splint mail and longsword for me.

Backpack, flint, torches, sling, waterskin, bedroll and large sack leaves me with 7gp and 4sp. Maybe a week's preserved rations, bringing me to 3gp 9sp.

You can bump him to 50XP - it's too late for me to start a session now, but you rolled up in good faith.
>>
Depending on how clustered we want it to be, I'm thinking hex1, hex 5, or maybe a new hex between 4 and 5 would be good for Mistamere. The new hex (number 7? number 15?) would be woodlands, with Mt Mistamere being around the southern end of the hills in hex 5
If it's in hex 1, then maybe hex 8 north of it should have hills or mountains, for the same reason. Again, all dependent on how the other players react to the suggestion.
The other problem would be armour differences. I'd say they can keep platemail, with the new cost of 450gp being due to a bunch of forges burning down, and leather armour becomes studded leather (which gives the 7 AC leather does in basic)
>>
>>21447854
I'd prefer to go with 1 or 5, just so that new people get the idea that they shouldn't spring off to 253 or something. The games need to be pretty "close" to one another in order for the cloud to function at the beginning.
>>
>>21447854
For the equipment, that sounds fine to me, for what that's worth. You're the referee in Mistamere!

Cleric, and a really good one. You can trade 2 points of I or D for the extra W to make +10% XP. Look after this character, you won't often roll such good stats.
>>

Ah, I thought you'd gone! Don't forget the specialisation rule for abilities, Violentio could have a higher S.
>>

What can he trade in? I'd like to keep the high dexterity, but dropping INT to 11 to raise STR to 15 would be useful.
>>

Ah. He can't lower his D, and W is too low, so that leaves I. 13 & 15 S do the same thing. Maybe he's just better being a clever Fighter? (By all means, you can lower the I by 4 to give V. 2 extra S, I'm just not sure it helps that much.)

You have a Fighter or Dwarf. Not a great one, but an awesome one. (Low Wis is generally fun for all concerned!) Strictly, your rolls qualify for a lot of things, but I believe those are your best options.

I'm afraid that there's no Ref on hand for you to try out your strapping lad, but we can finish making him and put him in the registry for next time. Hit points are 1d8, then cash is 3d8 (you could put it in one roll as 4d8 if you like).

Tasty Fighter stats, and you're going to be abusing Henchmen all the live-long day. Again, you can Dwarf it up if you like.

Why is a canoe worth 5500 candles or 1100 ladders?

Checking in. Started skimming at some point. I'd like to play but can also DM.
As DM:
Calling Hex 0005 or 0004. I'll start pulling together a map soonish. The (eventual) posted map will be a player map and contain generalizations. The medium in which I run the game is currently open and might depend on the players. PbP is convenient for any time mismatches but tends to be fairly slow. I can run on IRC as well. I was musing earlier about running on a low traffic NWN server that has a dicebag feature and an OOC area but that was just a randumb thought.

As Player: Well, I'll put together a character at some point.

So on the smaller map, each hex is 1.25 "high.". I think the ratio of edge to middle is root 5 to root 5 plus 2, and the "height" of the hex is 4. This is off the top of my head, so I could be wrong.

>>
>>21452886
If you're smart, lucky, and have enough people between you and the guy who wants to stab you, you should live.

Its rolling straight down the line because stats don't really matter that much, as I suppose you could potentially do well with straight sevens. Rolling is quicker and easier than point buy, which would have to be drafted in as home brew, then reworked over and over again to get it right.
>>
>>21452886
I'd been doing it because it started out as just going through the first dungeon from the red box, and straight roll is the most Hardcore/unfair (like having a poisoned string on a hatbox kill you)

By the way, it's Advanced that brought in the concept of having race and class. This is Basic/Expert Dungeons and Dragons.

Of course, if you're an evil character on your own you can always just bring along a bunch of retainers. The main problem would be how to run it. If you're posting all your evil plans in the same thread the good party could easily thwart them. IRC could work for it.
>>
>>21453302
You could, or even potentially other like minded adventurers. Was talking more about the fact that you'll have troubles selling your stuff at towns if you've messed with them, a place to rest that wouldn't be dangerous, and access to a group that sees you beyond a means to get powerful. Although if you can get a fence to solve the first, a guarded hide out somewhere people don't know about, but I'm at a loss on the third.

I'm not saying you shouldn't just that it will probably be more difficult than being good depending on how you get around to that.

I think - and I am old-fashioned and do not speak for all referees - that the best way to go is to have a chat session of some kind for the players to discuss their actions, and use a thread for "calling" the party's actions. It's very helpful to the players to have their adventure log written as they go, and playing "in public" advertises the Cloud game to the masses.

As for how it works... err... the rules are Labyrinth Lord, link in the OP. It's rather like B/X.

>>21454701
The map was generated using hexographer, but with 30 mile hexes and new referees fairly free to colour in as they choose it's only going to be an indication. I would interpret 5 as rough/hilly terrain with light vegetation. I thought it was more help to put terrain in the fix 6, rather than just great barren hexes.

Further - you don't have to use published material. I grabbed the Keep because ISotU was taken and I wanted something I could run while drafting my megadungeon. If you have homebrew ready to run - have at them!

Okay. Posted. I'll be working on roughing out a player map in the near future. If anyone has any requests on modules, please feel free to pipe up and I'll take it into consideration...

I'm usually pretty good at winging things and have a few ideas I can sprinkle into the map. I'll keep the hex mostly hilly but will have a forest or two in it somewhere. Also a valley. ...but I guess things like that will show up on a player map.
>>
>>21454806
Yeah. There's several ways to break down a 30 mile hex (and you don't even have to be concrete for a while). A first division might be to turn it into 6 mile hexes, or you could go hardcore and move straight to 2- or 3-mile hexes. (Below that, you only need situation maps for the particular sites and the odd sketch for encounters.)

Yeah the player map will be one giant 30 mile hex with a number of inaccuracies or generalizations.

Should we set up a place where DMs can compare notes?
>>
>>21454863
No! I don't want to know your spoilers, I want to play in your game! The way we hold the game together is by respecting geographic boundaries. I only control what's going on in my hex. Greatgary is "safe" ground - you can have savage humanoids (or whatever) raid it for inspirational purposes, but don't burn it to the ground or kill more than a few dozen of its citizens.

There are no forever-GMs in the Cloud. Unless they want to run all day every day!

So what kind of characteristics does Greatgary and the surrounding ~15 mile radius have?

>Hex 5. Using: Nothing at the moment. Will post a rough/general player map and will consider requests for modules. This hex contains two settlements. A hamlet and a small logging community. It’s said that there is a witch in the deep wood to the south west and many a person have gotten lost in the ancient and storied place. Deep in the hills lay barrows from a time long forgotten. Additional information to come.

(I was tempted to plunk down a spire of earth but I think that would be too much. Maybe another time)
>>
>>21454941
>Greatgary is a large human frontier town. A few villages surround it, populated by hardy settler types.

I wouldn't put more information than that down. Hex 0 is largely off-limits for mechanical reasons, although if someone wanted to add an entrance to their megadungeon there I guess it'd be OK.
>>
>>21454991

Well it's not really dungeon entrances but players doing stuff in town that I'm wondering about. There are only so many armourers you can screw over, for instance.
>>
>>21455029
I'd just stop them doing anything fancy in Greatgary. Most of the hexes will have villages to abuse. We may need a convention on magic-dealers (or just ban such things).
>>
>>21455072
By the way, I think our bro Dungeon Master is going to run his Castle of Gygar game today, and put it to the CoG players to merge into the Cloud.
>>
Bumping. I'm not running today, but Castle of Gygar should be on later (and may or may not become part of the Cloud).

>>21455156

I only understood 3/4 of what you said but I'll figure it out later. Here's a WIP of Hex 05's player map
>>
>>21455695
That is a thing of beauty.

Castle of Gygar was a PBP BECMI game already going when the Cloud was launched. Its referee would like to fold his game into the Cloud (retroactively making it the first active hex and bringing its characters into the scene), but wants his players to have their say first. He also has some conversion issues because BECMI & LL aren't quite the same.

I'll be waiting

Okay. The player map is just about done I think. I don't think there's really much more to add. I left some space in the bottom in case I needed to add notes or a legend.
>>
>>21456198
Wow. I'm glad my core refereeing is pretty good, or there would be some serious feelings of inadequacy brewing. As it is, I'm glad to be ref'ing alongside someone so dedicated - and really look forward to playing in your sessions!

Anyway, most if not all the art assets are in this thread if you care for that sort of thing. I've got to get a sliver of sleep before classes. Catch you later

Gave some more thought to the map and adding a few more things to flesh it out. Will post later.

I also laid down a rough 'living' rumor table I plan on having players roll on when they first start.

(reposting -I forgot the image)

I added Curran Keep and the farmland it overlooks to tie Welldon Rise to the community around Greatgary. Welldon Rise maintains its remoteness as a hamlet.

I'm cat sitting this coming weekend with no net access so I'll shoot for running something the Friday after. Possibly Saturday.
>>
When do we actually play? I would prefer to play with Spooky, because of somewhat related the time zone

Rolled 4, 4, 6, 2, 3, 1, 2, 4, 4, 2, 1, 1, 6, 6, 4, 2, 4, 4 = 60

Rolling whilst I read the thread and look at the pdf's even if I am too late to play.

....so many ones.

Dungeon Master is up and running. I'm kinda busy this week (seems like Creepy is, too), but will try to give it a blast tonight or tomorrow night (UK times, so in about six or thirty hours).
>>
Hi John! You can always drop a pre-rolled character into the registry so you're ready to go whenever you spot a game up.

S 14 D6 C8 I4 W14 Ch8

That's not too bad. You can turn the numbers into a solid Cleric or Fighter by reducing one 14 to a 10 and raising the other to a 16.
>>
Rolled 4, 2, 5, 6 = 17

>>21470035
Fighter it is, rolling for hit points and cash.

So S 14 D6 C8 I0 W16 Ch8 then?
>>
Rolled 2, 7, 5, 3 = 17

>>21470067
Errr I meant to increase strenght not wis lol.

S 16 D6 C8 I0 W14 Ch8
>>
>>21470075
Err, no, if you want to increase S you'll have to decrease W, not increase I1

S16 D6 C8 I4 W10 Ch8 is a thing you could have. You could also get S10 D6 C8 I4 W16 Ch8.
>>
>>21470086

Shit you are right, I was somehow reading l4 as l14. I shall take S16 D6 C8 I4 W10 Ch8
>>
>>21470109
OK. Your character starts with max hit points at 1st level, something that needs to be corrected on some earlier characters. That's 7 (1d8-1). Your starting money is 3d8 x10gp, and you can find the equipment lists in the Labyrinth Lord rules linked to in the OP.
>>
>>21470109
Equipment:
Rolled 130 gold

Sword, two-handed*
Splint mail
Dagger
Backpack
Bedroll
Blanket, winter
Flint and Steel
Stakes, Wooden (6)
Rations, trail x4
Waterskin
Spikes, Iron (12)
Holy symbol, Silver
Case, map or scroll
>>
>>21470228
You probably don't need a holy symbol, but you can have it if you want.
