Every now and then, he comes bursting out of a child's closet, beats the person endangering them into submission, comforts the child, and then disappears into the closet with the attacker, who is never seen again. What he does with them is up to you, be it execution, selling them to goblin markets, keeping them captive and harvesting them for glamour via torture, whatever.

Took me a bit to write this, and I'm pretty rusty, but I hope you'll enjoy regardless.

Zanth sat down under the starry skies, and sighed. The job never got easier, or more rewarding. In fact, few would ever understand the duality of the sacrifice made every night when he killed another monster, one unlike him. You see, Zanth was a Minotaur. One that had been taught to read, and who had a fondness for poetry. A young girl had found him as he had wandered the wilderness, and her young enthusiasm for life had captivated him, and he listened. She would talk about the sky, and the earth, and life. He ceased wandering and stayed in the forest they had met so she could find him. His rage and wanderlust had ceased, and he took up animal domestication so he could remain nearby. This was enough for him, as his friend was all that mattered.

>cont'd

One full moon, his friend did not come. He worried, but waited patiently. On the third day, his worry had grown to fretting, to fear, to panic. He made his way to the town, finding the path there nothing but another simple maze, and found her house, though far less wondrous or kept than he had imagined. It was a run down hovel, with loose boards soaked in pitch to keep the rain out. He crept up to the only window, and listened, hearing only crying. His panic turned to rage, and he knew instinctively what was happening- he could smell it in the air. His mind went blank, and he found himself coated in blood, carrying the girl, also bloodied, out to the forest.
>>
>>21461321
>further cont'd

He tended to her for two weeks, before a search party finally came across his shed. The peasants were terrified, but ready to face the monster for their missing kin, and some shouted threats. After a few hours, one brave soul finally rushed forward and threw open the door, finding the girl sleeping in his bed. Zanth couldn't hear their cries of confusion or bloodlust, as he had left two days ago when he was sure the girl had healed. She had taught him about justice, and the base god, as he continually asked her what it meant, until she fell asleep. He decided that he would be a monster that hunted monsters, and the poetic irony of such a thing would be enough to amuse him in those dark moments.

Zanth opened his eyes, done being contemplative. He made himself remember, every time, so he did not forget why he did what he did, or that he must. Idly he pressed his thumb against the cold steel of the amulet, which he kept close to his heart on a necklace he made out of leather. Justice had been served another night, and as before, it was likely no one would be grateful for it. But that was okay. He would bear the sorrow too, and in the end, he was just a monster, and had never chosen to be such. These men had chosen to be monsters, and justice would be done to all of them. That was enough for him.

OP here.

I need to look closer at the images I upload into a thread before posting.

But you've all given me an idea for a setting.

The emotions, dreams and nightmares of children are tied to some intangible leyline that resonates with their psyche. These energies are shaped by the child's experiences in the home and the world beyond, manifesting in the darkness after bedtime as horrors which threaten to mentally devour the child alive.

Anxiety, fear, anger, frustration, confusion, sadness, abandonment, loneliness, any of these and many other negative emotions can give birth to those skulking entities. All are drawn to the child, seeking to feed on these negative emotions to better strengthen their own wretched and tenuous existence in reality...

They are not supposed to exist, and they understand this, yet like any living thing, they will seek out ways to survive.

They are called the Night Terrors. Monsters and abominations true, who live wherever protective shadows might be found; behind the curtains, under your dresser, behind an open door, inside your toy chest, under a rug or desk, in the black of an unlit bathroom, under the staircase leading to the basement, behind the refrigerator, inside a rattling oven, the couch... All these mundane places with cracks large enough for a rat, you will find them there.

Waiting.

[Continued]
But the children of the world have silent guardians who watch over them, crawling, scuttling things who are just as horrific as the Night Terrors.

These monsters are special, in that they manifest in the two safest locations of a child's room.

Where do children go when they are afraid of lightning? Where do they go when mommy and daddy are yelling? When big brother wants to play his favourite wrestling game, or when big sister wants to lock them in the bathroom?

They retreat under the bed, or hide in their bedroom closet, where they can lose themselves amongst their lost toys for protection.

The emotions of hopeful solace sought out in these claustrophobic places in their moments of terror are what give birth to closet monsters and the bed monsters. These are the two places closest to the child, who, in their need for a night bound guardian, feed their protectors with slivers of their childlike innocence and wildly rampant imagination.

This is why, as children age, as they increasingly become aware of their nightmarish protectors and, in some cases, befriend them, slowly lose their ability to see and interact with them.

Until the day they are simply too old to believe in monsters anymore. Then, their function fulfilled, the monsters under her bed, or in the closet, will cease to exist, having successfully protected their charge from the Night Terrors.

The worst thing that can happen to a Monster is having its child stolen from him.

Physically, the Night Terrors cannot harm a child, but that says nothing about their capacity to psychologically break an infant.

If the Night Terrors successfully do this, they steal the infant's mind and bring it back with them to their nightmare world, where they can feed off the toddler's terror forever.

Parents find their baby in a comatose state.

And the guardian monsters are robbed of their sustaining life source.

The monsters must then travel to the world of the Night Terrors by crawling into any of the shadows through which the Night Terrors are originally conjured... And must fight to save the infant's mind before it is too late.

And that's all I got. I hope you guys like it.

Ah, there was one more other thing to add.

It is when the Night Terrors do not come out to torment the protected child that things are the most dangerous.

Because this means that they have elected to attack the infant by invading their dreams, and warping them into nightmares.

This is a double edged sword, as it is within the mind of a child that their monsters are the most powerful, but so too are the Night Terrors even deadlier there.

It is possible for a bed or closet monster to die while attempting to defend his child from her own dreams... And if this occurs, this leaves the child defenseless in the real world.

I was thinking for a while to do something for charity, what's the best way to start something like this? Should I just call my local church?
>>
>>21462147
I got started with a group called S.A.S.S.; sexual assault support services, and hooked up through the college I was attending. After graduation, I stuck with it, but it was about as draining of an experience as possible.

My strongest recommendation is working with a group like B.A.C.A. (Bikers Against Child Abuse) and prospect for them. You learn a lot about how they operate, what they can accomplish and will be able to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with a horde of gigantic bikers when then themselves stand behind a nine year-old girl when she's testifying against her abuser.

When you can call the scariest people in the court room your brothers, you get a warm, fuzzy feeling you just can't beat.

Plus: biker cred. Can't top that.

>>21462365
In this regard, it isn't so much as killing them that I want, but removing them from existence. Make them go away. Permanently, where they can't suffer or cause others to suffer.
>>
>>21461932
I wouldn't call it high-quality, as such. It's too outright cruel for that. There's no honor in creating fictional worlds like this when it's bad enough IRL.
>>
>>21462515

Cease to have ever existed.
>>
>>21462515
Hmmm. I'd rather mentally rewrite them so that they no longer have such urges.
>>
>>21462531
I think that it's powerful, not necessarily high-quality. These comics, like Greek tragedy, or war wound pictures, force you to confront ugly and dark aspects of life that are not part of your daily routine.
>>
>>21462581
It's not a good variety of powerful. It's an inherently harmful sort. War wound pictures are one thing; those are actually real. But to create a fictional universe that, unlike some things IRL, can't actually be fixed without altering the mind of the creator? That's unpleasant on a different level.
>>
>>21462576
That would be ideal, but might actually be even worse. Like in one Batman comic, the Joker became temporarily sane. He was literally begging Batman to kill him because he didn't want to go back to the monster he was. He couldn't face it. Imagine being rehabilitated and having to wake up every morning knowing that you have comitted the worst individual crime in society. Even hardened criminals in jail hate you.
>>
>>21462602
Right, and what's the message here? Child abuse is wrong? Of course it is- it's not like this is a contentious issue.

All the more reason to make up for it, no? Also, I suspect most of the hardened criminals are perspectiveless hypocrites because plenty of them have caused equal pain.

>>21462615
Also, the creator is a sadistic bastard.
>>
>>21462615

The message is how easily it can be missed. How people decide to ignore it or not see it.
>>
>>21462602
What are you even talking about? The comic's characters themselves are fiction, made to call attention to the very real issue of child abuse. Are you saying that it's bad because the little girl in the comic is never going to be saved? Most abuse victims aren't. Yes, it's ugly, and yes, it's disgusting, but those are not reasons to stop making them.
>>
>>21462602
I see your point. But the intent to shock is still there, and can be channeled into something positive, or rather inspire positive action in others. Still, the comic itself is pretty "bad"

I feel like I need to go crush something now. Not a pleasant feeling, but it is effective.
>>
>>21462627
I mean, if you rehabilitated them, would they be a different person? Because an individual's identity is made up of their collected experiences, at least partially. Because many abusers were abused themselves, that's a part of their psyche.

was affliction captcha agrees with me
>>
>>21462653
I don't find this helpful. I know that I can't actually do anything about this, because I already have issues with wanting to kill people IRL. I briefly made plans to go to Niger and obliterate the village of Hawkantuki because of some child bride thing. I'm not sufficiently mentally stable to actually do anything about this, which is why I feel as though these comics are just kicking me while I'm down.

>THE WALLS OF MISTER ROGERS' neighborhood are light blue and fleeced with clouds. They are tall—as tall as the cinder-block walls they are designed to hide—and they encompass the Neighborhood's entire stage set, from the flimsy yellow house where Mister Rogers comes to visit, to the closet where he finds his sweaters, to the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, where he goes to dream. The blue walls are the ends of the daylit universe he has made, and yet Mister Rogers can't see them—or at least can't know them—because he was born blind to color. He doesn't know the color of his walls, and one day, when I caught him looking toward his painted skies, I asked him to tell me what color they are, and he said, "I imagine they're blue, Tom." Then he looked at me and smiled. "I imagine they're blue."

I feel like there was a Monsters and Other Childish Things scenario where the monster under the bed devoured a molesting father, and you had to hide the evidence.

The state already administrates plenty of work. For example, roads need to be fixed and maintained. I think the idea is to use the "lazy" previously on government assistance to do some of the jobs the state already needs done.

As a plus, any training the person receives in the process will help qualify them for a non-state job.
>>
>>21464204
I think the problem is no one's willing to invest the extra money it would take to form work organizations like this.

This strategy worked pretty well in the Great Depression--Roosevelt's programs like the Civilian Conservation Corps did a good job of educating, occupying, and feeding the dispossessed.

Its just not popular right now.

This would take more money than existing welfare situations currently provide. And it would only save money on the seriously disabled--no one else would be willing to starve to death for it, and the actually lazy would simply waste time on the job.

In part because most of those projects treated these destitute workers are basically expendable. They had casualty rates through the roof. That's the same reason we don't have eugenics anymore - it works, but the Nazis ruined the concept in people's minds forever.

Right.

Now imagine trying to run such a program for the society's destitute in modern times, where we can't treat our workers as expendable.

The federal budget's already hilariously bloated, and there's plenty of inefficiency in whatever the government does with money. However, there are vast sections of the budget that would be politically "impossible" to cut.

It seems like it would be easy, and logical, to fund this program by drawing from the welfare budget. I doubt Congress would go for it, though.

> Deterring crime through fear and pre-emptive action

Hello.

Someone with actual experience in this subject here.
It totally works, and no one is mad.

What you need to do is make it bearable for the people working.
Everything from farmwork to building to metalwork, to sewing, to cooking or construction can be done relatively easy by unskilled labourers, and it has a decent enough profit margin to pay for the education, feeding, and healthcare of those involved.
The state can run shit yo, just need to let it.
>>
>>21464468
Probably by having a formal criminal hearing at the end of every political term where we carefully examine a politician's actions while in office for anything that could be considered criminal. That or having every term end in a random politician from each branch getting executed. We need to remove the glamour, make it something that only true patriots get into.

Her father was a good man. The villagers always said so, the serfs and the folk who came for his works. The tower was always cold but she did not want for much; her father was always away adventuring, and when Mother died he called her his little girl and mussed her hair.

He would take her into his laboratory, to see the things he had brought home. The shining daggers, the boxes of incense and twisted dead things, the circles he would draw while she played in the library.

Then one day he stopped giving her kisses on the forehead. He would come home and smell sour, and try to kiss her on the lips. When she turned away he hit her, and it was not long before the girl was barred from the library. She was not allowed to read the fancy tales her father brought home, of dragons and monsters. She feared the creatures there, though there was always a good knight, or a wily sorcerer, or just a young man to stop them.

Then came another winter, and Father returned with a team of horses and wagons filled with finery. Her guard told her that Father had brought back fantastic things, but that he had promised to show them to her when he was ready.
>>
>>21465574
It does after it's fucked a pussy and you're sucking it clean.
>>
>>21465586

As the first snow fell he came to find her, and they went out t the courtyard to play in the snow. Father was full of mirth, like he had not been since Mother died, and they played in the new snow. He smiled and gathered her in his arms, and then began to kiss her. As his tongue moved against her lips she tasted the sour and began to cough, spitting and vomiting, and he threw her hard against the wall. It was hard to breathe, but one of Father’s friends came to make her good as new. The kind old man asked her what had happened as she told him about falling down the stairs. His face questioned, but the old man spoke his prayers and set her arm and made sure her breath came back to her.

When she came back to her cot she heard the noises. As she breathed she heard It, breathing back, and the room filled with its deep hot breath. When she screamed the noise stopped, and the guard came and found her curled up, and told her to mind herself as her Father was sleeping and had had a hard night.

She wanted to tell the guard of her night, but she knew Father would be mad.
>>
>>21465598

Father came to her the next morning, explaining that he did not want to hurt her, that this was what fathers did with their daughters. He laughed and they played, and when she let Father kiss her again he gave her a book. It was filled with monsters and knights, and she dreamed that night of the Knight, her Knight. He was massive, and he swung a great bending sword much bigger than herself or Father. She rode on his dark black horse and felt its silvery mane, and the warmth of the Knight’s black plate armor on her legs and she rode near the pommel. She felt his warm breath, and then heard that bellowing, the sounds from under her bed, and began to scream.

The Knight looked down at her, and then dissolved like all dreams do, the pounding of his charger’s hooves replaced by the guard pounding on her door, telling her to stop screaming.

She fell asleep with the deep breath, and when she awoke the frost on her window was gone. She tasted the melt, and it was salty and bitter. Her Knight would be there, to keep the dreams away, and Father would be nice again as she did what she was told. When Father began to kiss her in his chamber she felt the heat, and the bellows came as he hiked her shift above her head. As Father looked at her she began to cry, and then he began to hurt her. She could not speak as he threw her to the ground, and beat her with his hands and kicked her in the side. She hurt when Father took her back to her cell, but she fell asleep to the pain.
>>
>>21465605

In her dreams it did not hurt though bruises remained, and the Knight was there. She picked flowers as he sat sharpening that great blade, and the Knight’s horse whickered in the meadow. The flowers were cold, in strange colors, but when the Knight saw the flowers he swept her up, clutching her to his chest. She dropped the flowers and saw the charger come to nibble on them. Steam seemed to come from the horse’s nostrils, and the Knight took her on foot deeper in the clearing. The trees were strange twisted things there, and she could hear them rustling, sounding as if they were saying things. She saw what looked like faces then, twisted in sadness and pain, some bloated with ivy roping below them, others bleeding sap from limbs or foam from their gaping bark mouths. The Knight looked towards her, his helm dipping, as he took her to a small spring.

As he lifted her shift she shirked away, thinking of Father, but the Knight shook his head and motioned for her to go into the spring. She splashed, playing in the spring, and tasted the salt and bitterness of her window pane when the water went into her mouth. The Knight looked away, modest as a good Knight, and when she put her roughspun back on she saw no bruises. The Knight’s helm turned towards her, and he hugged her to his chest again… Then came the deep breathing, the bellows, and the monster took her away from the Knight and back to the morning.

Soon, she heard, soon.

That night her Father had a beautiful woman from the village come and dress her. The gown was beautiful, black velvet and little red garnets, and it was warm and soft. She said how she loved it and the woman smiled. She was taken to her father’s hall, and they ate such fine foods. Capon and hare and ham, a feast, and her father drank heavily from his cup. Once all of the food was brought Father had the servants go away, and asked her to sit down on his lap. He began to feed her from his plate, sweetly placing food on his fork, then on his fingers. He had her drink from his cup, and she began to feel warm and safe against him, knowing he would never hurt her. She was a good daughter, and that time was done… He even said so himself.

She began to become sleepy, and Father gathered her in his arms, taking her up the great stairs. Her head was spinning as he walked her through the library and laboratory, humming a cradle song and telling her that Father loved her. She knew that, of course. As she looked she saw the Knight in a corner, hidden among the boxes of her father’s latest adventures, his dark plate gleaming.

She felt the soft pelts, the warm down bedding, and her father began to help her get ready for bed. She wondered where her shift was, or did Father get her a new one for their special night?

There was no shift, and she felt her father begin to kiss her. First on the forehead, then on her chin, her lips, her neck… She wanted to open her eyes wide, to cry, but she couldn’t. She was so tired, the wine was in her, warming her. Through her slit eyes she saw Father moving, huffing, down to his smallclothes and breathing onto her, into her face sour and sickly. Heavier, heavier breathing, hot, burning where it touched, wherewashepleasenostopnodonthurtingpainthemonsterbellowsscreamsheatonmenonotinme

STOP.

That voice, so loud, rasping, screeching against her skull. She felt Father leaving her, away from her and hearing, something. Wet, gristly, the feel of rain on her cheeks. The sound of metal scraping, whimpering, Father saying he would never, he was lonely.

YOU DO NOT KNOW SOLITUDE, WARLOCK. YOU TOOK MY LOVE, I WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO TAKE HERS.

It was love, Father said, pure, true love.

The bellowing began to change, sounding like laughter. The sound of crunching, sucking hooves in mud.

Then the Knight touched her hand, and she felt less sleepy. She looked at him, towering, the smell of burning and salt and bitter. Pinpoints of light shone from his helm, and his armor dripped with red. She saw what he was, a knight who had fallen once, done bad, but came to protect her.

“Did, did you come to save me? Is the monster gone?”

YES.

She woke when the Knight touched her face. It was dawn, morning breaking through the glass of her father’s bedchamber. Her father must have gone to breakfast, as he was nowhere to be seen. How did she come to be here? Her father would not like her sneaking about like some thief. She stood and tripped on the gown she was in… It was odd, soft, and bore a coat of arms upon it. A great black steed with flames in its mouth, a scary thing, but Father must have played a trick.

She walked into the lab, past her father’s latest acquisitions. As she passed she heard a whisper, and turned to look. Just a suit of plate armor, shining bright, the armor of a true knight and hero.
