I'm out of alcohol, my evening chow just fell off the desk and I've got a flat tire. Awesome.

minor complaints aside, time for SW89! This'll be a regular thread- Tanks will probably run Thursday.

Archive here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike+witches+1989

also, new OP art! Halloween themed, even! thanks as always for that!

“How do you do it?” Maverick asks quietly as she surveys the board in front of her.

“King me.” You respond, jumping a checker over one of her pieces and reaching the back of the board. “Do what?”

She looks over her shoulder at Goose, who's sitting quietly near the window, looking out at the flight line, then she leans in, closer to you.

“How do ya keep from worrying yourself sick about Merlin?” She asks, her voice barely above a whisper.

You sigh. Sitting in the alert shack is boring enough- there's a checkers board, a few decks of cards, and of course you're allowed to bring a book or magazine or three in to read- and there's plenty that are left there for whoever wants something to do, but it's not much. A six hour shift still ends up being mind-numbingly boring.

Which, upon reflection, is probably better than the alternative.

The land war is almost surreal. The Soviet troops made rapid gains across the Seward peninsula, breaking into Alaska's interior within 36 hours of their initial landings- but they've since been engaged by the lead elements of the 1st of the 501st airborne and the 3rd of the 509th airborne and the Alaskan national guard.

The battles, one near the 'city' of Hughes, in the central part of the state, and the other near the town of Ambler to the north were both decisive defensive victories- the limited Soviet armor and APCs were surprised by the dug-in and well-camouflaged troops and driven back in disarray, though not without inflicting damage. While initially successful, both units have since withdrawn under heavy air cover to better prepared positions.

Which is why you're sitting alert. The promised ground-attack witches have yet to materialize, and while you keep hearing rumors the army plans to ship up some tank witches, all you've seen so far are a few M551s that had supposedly been in storage locally- and they hardly classify as tanks, let alone tank witches.

So far, the soviets have kept their aircraft fairly close to Nome- no one's seen much of them since the initial contact. They brought pretty heavy AA assets- a pair of fighters have already been downed in low passes over troop concentrations- but you still enjoy air superiority.

Which makes Mav's question all the more strange. Why bring that up now?

[x] Something on your mind, Patty?

“What's on your mind, Patty?” You ask, forgetting about the checkers match anyway.

She sighs, and her shoulders slump. “I just... I don't feel like I'm cut out to be a lead. Back when it was you and me and Orion, it wasn't a big deal, ya know? You're a big kid, I didn't have to watch out for you. But now it's like... they've saddled me with this kid, and she's young and new, and dammit, what if I screw up and she gets hurt or killed?”

“So you're worried you'll fuck up and it'll come back on her, not you?” You ask, looking over at Goose yourself.

Mav nods. “Yeah, pretty much. She's young and impressionable and a cute kid, and damn I'm not cut out for this, you know?”

“You know, mav, I think pretty much every other leader of combat troops ever has said that.” You point out.

“Yeah, but-” She starts to protest, but you cut her off.

“No, no buts. You're cut out for this better than you know. I've seen you stick your neck out for Goose before, it's not like you just lead her into trouble then let her work herself out.” You say. “Plus, she's still a witch, and she graduated from the academy just like you did. You've got two years of peacetime flight on her, that's all.”

“That counts for a lot!” Mav protests. “That's two years of peacetime training she hasn't had, plus all the shit we used to do with those IJAF and IJN witches.”

“Yeah, that's true. But the reds aren't deploying witches, are they? So it's not like that's doing us any good anyway. And two years of peacetime training? Pft, what, touch and goes? Landing drills? Not like she's missing anything.” You say.

“I guess but-” Her response is cut off by a rising wail.

“Aw shit, here we go!” you yell, jumping outta your chair and snagging your helmet.

You're strapped in inside of three minutes, and have your #1 started up about a minute later.

Maverick and Goose are off the runway as you start up your #2, while Katya waits impatiently for you to star taxiing from the pad to the runway.

“What's the score, Merlin?” You ask over the interplane as she drops the canopy into place.

“Ice and Slider's flight was jumped coming home by a group of Soviet fighters. They've lost a -15 already and one of the -16s has been pretty badly beaten up. They've bagged a pair of -23s and a -21 though. Typhoon has an additional group on the way, and they called for support.”

“Mav! You and Goose get in there, see if you can't help out!” You say, lining up for your takeoff roll.

“Roger that, Warhound. Watch our jets!” Mav cries with glee.

“She's fast!” Katya marvels from the ground.

You have to grin. “That's what mav does.” you say, feeling your bird lurch forward as you let go of the breaks. “I wonder if Goose can keep up?”

“I don't think so.” Merlin says. “She's a healwitch.”

“Spellcaster, you're under Typhoon once you're airborne. Good luck and good hunting.” The officer in charge of the tower at Elmendorf says as you clear 5,000 feet.

“Roger tower.” You reply simply, tightening down your straps one last time.

“You doing Ok, Katya?” you ask, looking out over your right side to see her flying close enough to your wingtip to touch it, her own new F-14 strikers painted to match your bird. She nods.

“I am fine.” She grins. “Do you always fly to the rescue like this, or can you fly normal missions to?”

[x] No, no, I can fly normal missions too. Sometimes. Wait, what's 'normal'?

Eyeballing your mach indicator as it creeps up towards 1, you reply. “Once upon a time, I'd have said I fly normal missions from time to time. These days, I find myself wondering what normal is.”

“Spellcaster two one, This is typhoon. Take heading three-two-zero to the fight. You're two hundred miles out” The controller speaks unusually fast, and sounds worried.

“Typhoon, you got any kind of data on friendlies and bandits for us?” Merlin asks.

“Spellcaster two one, stand by.” He says. “We've got a hell of a furball about thirty miles north-west of Nikolai. It's too confused to get a good radar picture, but we're looking at between eighteen to twenty bandits and about twelve friendly birds, plus witches.”

He pauses. “Plus at least one heavy group incoming.”

“Jeeesus....” you breathe. That's at least twenty two fighters, possibly as many as twenty four. Your own arrival will only add another three witches to the fight, plus your own bird- you'll still be badly outnumbered.

“Tally ho!” Maverick calls.

[] Merlin, see if you can't lock up that incoming group so we can shoot a couple 152s at them.

[x] Merlin, see if you can't lock up that incoming group so we can shoot a couple 152s at them.

“Merlin, flip that big radar of yours on and see if you can't get us something to shoot from those inbound bogies.” You say, looking over your displays again.

“Ok, on it. Give me about a minute.” She says.

“Kayta, take spacing.” You say while waiting, looking out over your right wing again.

“Two” she says, and starts a lateral drift, dropping back a few hundred yards and slipping further right by a hundred or so- far enough away that you can maneuver as you need to, close enough to get involved if you need help.

“Got it. On your trigger, Frank!” Merlin says.

“Spellcaster Two One, Fox three!” you call, triggering the missiles, which drop clear of their mounts and tear into the sky, leaving white contrails in their wake.

“All aircraft, this is Typhoon. Additional bogies inbound, Elmendorf is launching additional witches and fighters now.” Typhoon calls.

“Getting kinda crowded, here.” You remark.

Seconds later, you can see the furball- and that Typhoon wasn't lying. There's at least eighteen MIGs left- the distinct delta-wing shape of Mig-21s interspersed with Mig-23s, all engaged at what amounts to point-blank range- inside of a mile, in some cases.

As you watch, A Mig-23 slides on the tail of a F-15, tracers from it's 23mm stitching across the sky as the eagle driver breaks in a hard turn to evade. The migs, though horribly outclassed, are still able to gain shots just by dint of their numbers.

[x] Stay formed up with Katya, we'll do this by the numbers. One mig at a time till they break off.

It hardly takes a thought before you realize you don't belong in that furball, at least not until you've shot off most of your missiles. Your 152s are still in the air- Merlin's been keeping tabs on them with the bird's computer, not her own sparkles, but she hasn't said anything about them, which means they're probably on target.

“How're things, laaaadies?” You drawl as you start to slide in behind a -21 that's strayed a bit far from his wingmate- a pathetically easy task, despite his defensive attempts.

“Running low on ammo.” Is all Slider responds with- Ice doesn't respond at all.

“Maybe.” You start to observe, locking the fishbed up with an agile and firing “Maybe if you'd use a rifle like normal witches, that wouldn't be an issue! Splash one!” the little mig never stood a chance- the new model agile tracking beautifully and slicing through it's rear quarter like a buzzsaw.

“Splash three, actually.” Merlin corrects. “Two of our 152s hit, two missed.”

“Better than unaugmented phoenixes.” You say, looking for your next target.

The fight is starting to thin out- the badly overmatched migs are paying for their few victories. Even in a knife fight like that, the -15s and -16s are proving to be highly superior, though another -16 has gone down since you engaged. Still, it's been done at a cost of five more migs for the soviets, your three plus another two to Slider since you've arrived. The Numbers are starting to even up.

“Heads up, we've got bandits joining. Tally ho on eight, repeat eight Migs.” Ice says, calmly.

“Frank, there's Witches in there.” Katya says. “Soviet witches.”

Setting aside Katya's feelings on this or not, we have 5 witches versus an unknown number of enemy. They probably have rifles and are fresh, as much as Soviets can get anyway. We can outfly a couple witches, but can we down them when they're duelling in close range with friendlies? There are too many variables in here. I don't like this one bit.

But we only defy orders when diving into a fight. We don't turn tail and run at the first sign of trouble. Throw on some bravado for Katya's sake.

[x] We're not leaving till they tell us to, Katya.

“We're staying with it Katya. You still with me?” You ask, resetting one trigger for guns and the other for agiles. If this was clear sky, you could launch a couple AMRAAMs before they closed, but it's not, and you're an item of interest, now.

“I will not leave your wing. I was only worried you'd attack them without knowing of the danger.” Katya says, calmly.

“Good. I'd hate to have to go in alone.” You tell her, before switching over to talk to Typhoon. “Typhoon, this is Spellcaster Two one. Enemy group has witches, say again, enemy group has witches. Count eight bandit aircraft plus unknown sparkles.”

The controller sounds more than a little distressed by that information. “Spellcaster, did you say sparkles?”

“Affirmative. Spellcaster two two called 'em, we're no joy.” You say, straining your eyes to try and make out the witches among the migs. You can't yet, but you know they're in there, now.

“Spellcaster two one, friendly assets are inbound, ETA is three minutes. Hold till then.” The controller says, clearly relaying orders.

“Ice, you get that? We've got inbound sparkles.” You say, flicking back over to the squadron channel.

“Yeah, we got it. We're about done here anyway, the fight's gone out of these guys.” Ice says. Sparing a glance back- it clearly has. There's a scant dozen of them left now, and most of those are separating from the fight and heading west.

You're going to be the first element to contact this new group, how do you want to handle it?

“Hey Katya, what's an average ceiling for a witch?” You ask rather innocently, creeping the throttle forward.

“Maybe forty thousand feet? You can go higher, but the shield gets harder to maintain when you get too high.” She says.

“Feel like following me up to sixty for a few seconds?” you ask, jamming the throttles wide open and standing your cat on it's tail.

“You know.” Merlin says placidly “It'd be nice to occasionally get some kind of warning when you're going to do that.”

You chuckle as you watch your altimeter spin dizzily upwards. “Keep on 'em Merlin. They following?”

“Nope. They've broken up. Got good visual on the witches, there's four of them. They're mostly dueling with our girls. The Migs are attacking the fighters. Looks fairly even.” She says.

“Oh, good. Hey, what are your thoughts on rollercoasters?” You ask, leveling out at sixty five thousand feet.

“Ooh, I loooove roller coasters!” Merlin says.

“Good!” you say, as you nose the cat over into a dive and cut the throttles.

Below you, the familiar sights of air combat have been twisted by witch contrails- helixes and impossible turns mark the paths of their fights.

Witches are more valuable targets. Let's see if we can bag one. From the Top Gun threads, guns seem to be the best way to nail sparkles. Really, I don't care about the means, but I think we should try to nail a sparkle.

[x] Diving missile pass, use the Helmet mounted sight to target the migs for missiles!

As you tip over, you start focusing on the migs below you- targeting them for an AIM-95E launch. One on each of the over-body points and three each on your wing gloves leaves you seven, after that one Fishbed kill, and once those are gone, you'll be down to a pair of 152s, 4 AMRAAMS, and your gun's 400 rounds in two bins.

The helmet's sensors track your pupil, designating seven of the eight migs for a missile apeice. One quick IFF interrogative- which all come back negative- and you hit your missile release, launching seven agiles into the air near you.

A split second later, their rocket motors ignite, carrying them away with tiny supersonic cracks as they rapidly accelerate past Mach 1 with ease.

The upgraded agile is a scary, scary missile, you have to admit. Even launching on engaged targets which were already maneuvering, they were able to track and kill a pair of migs, and cripple another three badly enough that their opponents were able to kill them almost immediately after that. Five out of seven- the other two were both able to defeat the missile shots, but it hardly matters.

The three undamaged fighters begin to withdraw west as your reinforcements begin to enter the airspace from the southeast.

[x] Broadcast a general call for the Soviet witches to throw down their weapons and surrender. They don't have a chance.

The scene below you is pretty poignant, you can't lie. The four soviet witches, back to back, weapons out, hovering there. All their support's run away, and there's fighters just circling. Waiting. You can see the fear etched on their faces, and the two of them that have their weapons up are shaking badly enough it's almost visible from here.

“Dammit! We're the good guys!” You protest, slamming your fist against your cockpit wall. “The good guys! They should just surrender already!”

“Ice.” You call over the squadron freq. “You're still it till the colonel shows up. What do you want us to do?”

“Standby.” Ice says, tiredly. “Katya, will you translate for me?”

“Of course.” Katya says, still not breaking from your wing. “Whenever you are ready, tovarishch Ice.”

Ice's call is pushed out on all frequencies. “Attention, soviet witches. Your support has fled, you have no chance of victory. Surrender and you will be treated fairly.” Simple enough, you suppose.
>>
At first, you're worried they're not going to do it. That this will go down the hard way, and you select your guns and start plotting a run- from slightly above, you can get a good two second run in. combined with your witches and the allied fighters, the reds will end up drowning in shells before they get a chance to fight back.

For almost a minute, they don't move. “Tovarishch Ice, can I ask them something?” Katya says across the squadron frequency.

Ice hesitates, then you see her nod. “Go ahead, Katya.”

Katya says something in Russian- you've no idea what it is, but the witches look shocked- and one almost immediately drops her weapon, starting forward towards Katya. A fast exchange of Russian between them and she stops- and says something to the rest of the witches that make them drop their weapons.

Katya smiles. “I thought I recognized them.” She says.

I think you're being overly suspicious of mid-teenage girls conscripted to fight in a war.

But they're probably going to be kept under lock and key, unlike Katya. They didn't defect, they're POWs.

>[x] Who are they?
Old squadron mates.
>>
>>21466826

This does seem a bit convenient. But also, this raises the question: where's the real Soviet push going to be at? This obviously isn't it. Insufficiently brainwashed witches. Are they still keeping their frontline units ready to fight in Europe, or is there something else we need to be worried about?

This will seem far, far too convenient if the first witch to surrender's name was Svetlana.
>>
>>21466797
>>21466800
Seeing as how they were sent in with just 21s and 23s, I'm inclined to believe the Soviets were purposely trying to get them killed.
>>
>>21466890
who?
>>
>>21466898
Earlier thread, Katya mentioned having a friend who went off to their academy, and came back much colder and more distant. Basically, brainwashed is what we surmised.
>>
>>21466890
It seems like this is just a way to tie up US forces to keep them from reinforcing Europe, unless they have some way of getting a fleet across the Pacific past every US naval base without them noticing.

Sending in non-brainwashed witches getting sent in with lowly Mig-21s and 23s as support just screams "cannon fodder".
>>
>>21466800
[x] Glad you did. That would have been ugly.
[x] Who are they?

Wouldn't exactly surprise me if the Soviets were deploying certain witches with the intention of getting them offed.
>>
>>21466909
Methinks you're thinking too broad. It would make no sense to send in this much air power to distract US forces from Europe. The Alaska base is important no matter what happens elsewhere. I'm beginning to suspect a diversion for a different attack closer to home.
>>
>>21466909

I'm thinking the Reds were "helping" their insubordinate pilots and witches along into an early grave. This is obviously not the big push, but they sent a token force into a heavily entrenched enemy with inferior tech.

They were slaughtered and removed as possible defectors (fat shit that did.)
>>
>>21466942
Either this whole offensive is a diversion, or they sent in that particular wave as fodder in order to test our defenses. There's still Aigaion and the supersubs to worry about, as they are both capable of striking Alaska.
>>
>>21466975

>>21466909

>>

The flying carrier is a joke anyway. The subs and the millions of tanks in Europe are the real story.

The reds probably know this, which is why it is in Alaska while bigger, more important things are happening somewhere else.

[x] Who are they?

“Who are they, then?” You ask as you tilt your aircraft to watch your strange formation start the flight back to Elmendorf.

You're afraid Katya's smile will break her jaw. “My cousin, Ludmilla. I have not seen her in years- I'm glad she's out of the war.”

“And the others?” You prompt.

“Her squadron. Highest concentration of witches in any reserve unit.” She shrugs. “Gorky will have more, of course, and they will be front line witches, but it is hard to not be happy.”

You have to agree- You're directed to land last, as the army scrambles to get their tankwitches in place on the runway.. just in case. You have to laugh about that- they didn't even have time to leave the base, and they're already at work, 50mm tank-killing rifles leveled at the POWs as they land.

“That's got to suck” you note, watching the POWs land and seeing the C-5 Parked at the end of the runway. “They just land, and here they are, having to get into their strikers right away and handle POWs”

“Only choice, really. Or do you trust MPs and infantry with witches?” Ice says.

“Nah. Witches are too strong for infantry to deal with. But, still man. Not even time to get partially adjusted, just welcome to Alaska, get your gun.” You say.

“The army's probably pissed about this.” slider says, laughing. “Their tankwitches just show up, and now they've gotta leave again to escort the prisoners to Seattle.”

You wince. “Ouch.”
You, of course, aren't afforded a chance to talk with the POWs, though Katya and Ice get to. Instead, By dint of being the first one back at your hooch, you also get to the coffee pot first- and have your pick of the seats at the debrief.

[x] Sit up front. You might be getting all the kills forever, but you're still a professional.

Elbowing Merlin lightly in the ribs, you indicate two seats near the front of the room- ones with good access to the coffee pot in the front of the room.

Filling up two of the mugs with sweet, sweet lifegiving coffee, you sit down and wait for the remainder of the pilots and witches to file in. It doesn't take too long, surprisingly- the eight pilots plus Slider and Maverick and Goose are next in, followed by the colonel's wingmate, and their third squadron member, who seems to prefer EF-111 Strikers. Ice and Katya are last in, with the colonel following after.

The debreif is typically boring- a reconstruction of what happened, up till she starts crediting kills. The USAF pilots gave a good accounting of themselves- eight migs and three partials with you across them, all told. Ice got four and a pair of probables, Slider got five. Mav got three, Goose got one and a probable, and you got five, plus partial credit for three more. Twenty nine fighters, plus three probable and a bare few that disengaged and got away. It's too bad they were all outdated junk, really.

You can tell she's a little mad- both at missing out on the 'Denali turkey shoot' and at the abject proof that the Navy's system works. Your tiny smirk probably didn't help her mood at all.

After she dismisses you, it's a mad rush back to the hooch to see who gets the showers first. One that you lose just barely, as Merlin slides in the door just ahead of you.

The TV in your combination recroom-kitchen isn't anywhere near as nice as the one you have at home- but it's color, and you get cable just fine. Most of the utilities got run ahead of schedule- Mav and Slider talked a crew into coming out and hooking up the building.

While the nightly news isn't on just yet, CNN's covering the war practically nonstop. NATO has withdrawn almost completely from Poland, and the reds are already starting to re-organize it and fold the country into the communist bloc. Unconfirmed rumors are saying that there's already a communist Polish armored unit on the way to the front, and hastily-repainted drakens have been noted at former Polish airforce bases. The remaining Polish forces have withdrawn mostly into Germany or into the north western part of the country, where they're fortifying near Wolin and Dzinow.

Of particular note is a piece done on the 11th ACR's positions along the Neisse river, the newest NATO defensive line. While you're not sure, you think you see your brother's tank in a hull-down fighting position near Frankfurt. At least, you think it's his, but several white bands around the barrel are all new additions, and it looks like there's some hasty armor repairs to it as well.

From the sounds of it, the war in Europe is the soviets just using massive numbers to overwhelm allied forces. The part that gets you is that it sounds like it's working- The report says NATO witches are already starting to suffer from combat fatigue to the point where several of them have had to be removed from the front and sent back to the UK or the western part of Germany for recovery.
>>
In the middle east, Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait, and Saddam Hussein just today announced that it was now the 19th province of Iraq and named his cousin to be it's military governor. While the president has been strongly condemning this action, the talking heads seem to think that America can't afford to do a damned thing about it. Both Iran and Saudi Arabia have similarly condemned the action, and the saudis have put their own military on high alert, which, combined with the survivors of the royal Kuwaiti military, has at least caused Iraq to pause.

In Asia, talks with Japan to release US troops and equipment interned on their bases has deadlocked. The Japanese are offering to allow US service members to return to the states on IJN transports, but they're refusing to release American arms and equipment.

The rest of the news coverage is interrupted by Merlin announcing she's done in the shower- and you dashing across the tiny hallway into the bathroom just ahead of Slider.

“God damn it bishop!” She yells through the door. “You'd better leave some hot goddamned water!”

“Only if you make chow tonight!” you respond, laughing.

“Deal!” she says.
>>
and that's it for the night!

We might be exploring tanks in Poland as a side story to the main quest on Thursday, though someone's been talking about maybe picking that up as some writing or a quest on it's own- I'm not sure. in the mean time, of course, there's a twitter, and the IRC if you need to catch me.
