Such an incredible, pressuring magic wouldn’t go unnoticed by your companions and, not a few second after Ame-no-Uzume let go of her Trance, her nerves that were shining a deep, dark blue finally receded as she let out a satisfied sight and the weight on your shoulders lifted that Hadraniel literally burst out of the roof and, in an almost tumultuous tornado charged right in the middle of your little group, sending debris, breaking branches off trees and even clearing out the sliced off body of the abomination in one big gust, the champion almost lost its footing and not a second later did the whole group come charging out, only to notice absolutely nothing.

As a whole it was a rather comical situation, but Ame took the reign and simply revealed that she dispatched an abomination, making certain to leave any precision about how close she had been to be ambushed completely out and, as such, restlessness died down amongst the group, with you and two mutes as only witnesses to this event.

The option of patrolling the woods for any more of such agents had to be rejected and this installed a feeling of restlessness amongst everyone despite how the Queen dispatched such a creature, but activity of early mornings had to press on regardless if only for the sake of sanity, brief breakfast was handed out by the alchemist, the dry meat and plain bread heavily reminded you of your days in the army, if only the girls around you weren’t so stiff… but that may simply be an effect of the swamp, pleasantry aren’t exchanged often but the fresh night of sleep energized everyone wonderfully.

Of course, during this little break Emeth never left your side and it was during that time that the Champion made its exit, very abrupt for it simply stood up and left without a single word, quickly disappearing into the dense foliage of the forest without so much as a last salute, without giving any hints about the capabilities of the small idol and, instead of giving himself a headache, Garret made certain to examine everyone for sign of disease or weakening in that immunity potion which, thankfully, proved fruitless.

And so, in this dutiful atmosphere stand this merry band of monsters almost ready to set out, is there anyone in particular you’d wish to talk to before departing? Such pleasantries won’t be possible once you delve deeper into this forest.

Untangling yourself from Emeth has long proved to be a pointless endeavor, the fluffy queen was facing the edge of the forest, almost out of the house and you navigated amidst the women preparing backpacks and equipment, you’ve been spared such duty in favor of quick response in case of attacks due to your magical gifts.

Regardless, you had your place in this squad and pushing such thoughts aside, you stopped beside the taller Inari who didn’t seem to acknowledge your presence, concentrated on observing forward, her ears did twitch however…

The formation was mostly the same as the last one, but the environment of the forest required a much tighter grouping and, more than once, you bumped into shoulders or wings when you tripped into some roots, moving roots to be precise. Scouting the terrain ahead proved useless, the plants moved constantly and this was enough to make everyone nervous and reinforce vigilance, Mylen in particular showed a strange hostility to the foliage and, more than once, stabbed into a mobbing bush to wound the plant that would subsequently retreat, she had made certain to never stray from your side and you have to admit that if it weren’t for her quick reflexes you’d probably have eaten your second meal of dirt by now, how she can make sure you keep your balance without smacking you in the face with her shield is only one more mystery on your table.

Before departing you made certain to tell Ame about your own dream but the queen simply affirmed that she’d thin it through before announcing the departing and now, it’s been a few hours of rough traveling inside forest, pudgy floor, trees bleeding oils and not a single sound, the progress was rough, Hadraniel and Garret at the front had the worst of it by far but they never relented or slowed down.

For some reason you have the impression of being… mocked, but you soon push that thought aside when Athena hand you a flask.

After thirty more minutes of hard walking, you saw something completely out of place inside this cursed swamp.

First, was emerging into a plain clear of trees and overgrown vegetation, yet the land lacked the signs of work, it was as if plants were afraid to sprout, marking a very clear end to the forest, even the ground seemed solid, free of pudgy humidity and your guide, Garret, called for a pause as he looked on confused, but he soon started to concentrate, even going as far as closing his eyes.

You’d have taken this time to talk to some of the girls if it weren’t for a small pink butterfly flying right in front of you, a small precious thing flying carelessly in the air, droplets of brilliant white slowly falling from each flaps of wings, it passé by Mylen who, somehow, doesn’t notice, flies by Ame-no-Uzume who is looking forward to, you notice, a structure in the horizon that holds the attention of everyone, it appearing again like the forest behind you, out of thin air.

Before you can speak, you sense the awakening of your hunger, the bottomless pit the beast never satisfied rage against something and you grimace, putting a hand in the middle of your chest, momentarily breaking contact, only to hear an unnatural lamentation, several voice crying out in unison in some form of angry agony.

Some kind of…thing is floating, what look like corpse glued together, floating and losing its body in the air, swaying as if underwater, faces… probably ten, fifteen of them floating and moving as the spirit lament and then, one of two arms launch for the carefree little insect…

And everyone else is ready to depart, with Emeth looking at you curiously as you hold your chest against the anger of your other half.

Emeth squeeze your hand with strength, the fact you aren’t moving has everyone stop as well and, when this bulbous creature grasp the ephemeral pink insect you point in its direction, not too far from the ground.

The pain in your chest force you to speak while swallowing a grunt, not everyone look where at what you’re talking about but, when Emeth give you a confused tilt of head, you know that nobody else has this vision, you look back, confused and slightly angry, this thing jam the fragile little butterfly in one of its many waiting mouth.

Mylen peer at you, but you respond with a sigh while massing your chest, the sky is completely obscured by dark grey clouds: it feels like it’s going to pour any seconds.

From this momentarily lack of attention, somehow, the black vaporous being dissipate in a concert of dying screams uttered as if underwater, it literally squeeze itself out of existence, arms twisting, tongues and eyeballs jutting out of its faces, amorphous being eaten from the inside out and, in a hazing unfocused image floats a girl that, unfortunately, you have no time to identify beside the colored hair and clothes.

‘’AMBUSH’’

You don’t know who screamed, but not a second later came the thunderous, hollow boom of Hadraniel magic completely drowning out anything else, the lash out of wind would have sent you straight on the ground if it weren’t for Emeth and Mylen standing firm, behind you Athena managed to keep Sylphis from meeting that fate.

Around you, the ground literally vomit corpses, nay skeletons, as bright as blood and filled with some kind of roots or veins, or perhaps strings, reaching to the soil. Some have fleshes, most are bones, partly shaved off to allow makeshift weapons, the first ones were sent back to the ground unceremoniously by Hadraniel clap, but more than enough keep popping out to make your situation hopeless.

5,10,15,20… Undead during the day, an impossibility yet they charge like one mass and before anyone else can move, another strong clap of wind by the angel send everything sprawling to the ground.

Even so more pop out, an unending tide of silent murderers yet, above, a girl is floating but you don’t have time to look at her, do you?

Thus, this instant prove you how utterly wretched this place but, more importantly, the competence of your fellows.

You’re a shoved right into the middle of the group, a diamond formation is quickly formed while the undead start to pieces and rise anew with you and Ame sharing the center, the queen is already holding her ornate fan, her every veins, nerves, glowing in dark blue as she incant, a soft song amidst the abominations.

The magic of monsters may very well be stronger than the humans, but the drawback is that it takes times and a single moment in your scenario will decide death or triumph.

This quantity of foes is… troublesome indeed, but as a water mage you have your answers against such a thing the heavy moisture of the air is a boon, your companions grant you this safe haven amidst hell so you will make certain to repay them in kind. Athena and Sylphis are guarding the rear as always, but such direction is meaningless when you are so deeply encircled, the two girls fight as one, it is a deadly and beautiful dance they’re synchronization is perfect, such a statement is by no mean said thoughtlessly.

Block, bash, swipe, one hand a shield yet she proves formidable, the lizardwoman act as deterrent, solid strikes to break balance and whatever formation, leaving the quick Mantis to slices through the humid bones, none present can hope to match them and everywhere around lies trophy of their macabre dance, what would they do if the knight had her sword?

The right flank, Mylen is holding it like you’ve always seen her do: feet planted firmly on the ground, thrusting her spear at the numerous charging foes and breaking they’re velocity or returning it against them, the amount of skeletons send sprawling into they’re fellows is enough for the tide to meet a clear and abrupt end.

The Left flank is held sorely by the golem, a first battle for her and no weapons at all, but her punches and kicks are enough to shatters skulls, arms and torso, sometime she find the time to throws the abominations back where they belong and, out of everyone, her tempo never cease, a glancing blow or a scratch doesn’t provoke a grimace, her beautiful hair is soon full of grime and gore, remnant of rotted meats clinging to they’re previous… occupant.

Hadraniel has, so far, never used magic so much. Her veins are shining in peerless white, she stand immobile right in front of you, her wings are flapping while she hold her spear upward, the wind she produce is akin to an hurricane: patches of dirt are thrown out of the ground along with the red skeletons, they’re bones unable to sustains the onslaught of wind yet, some splatters altogether when Hadraniel a blessed feather charging right at them. On her own, everything in front of her is locked down mercilessly.

Finally, even with all these Valkyries, some filter through and that is where the alchemist come in, his strike are precise and strong, beheading in one swipe as he run from flanks to flanks, keeping the inner sanctum clean.

Thus, the girls bought you the time you needed.

It is impossible to grant sentience, but summoning is possible. Using the air and your body as fuel, various blue blobs fall on the ground who soon, very soon, form into elongated human form, only a few seconds for a fully adults maturation, the water thralls are gooey and sticky, your mind race as you must expand your consciousness to control them and you resolve to simple action: charging past the lines, into the undead and making a complete, sticky mess of the foreground.

It prove successful, very much so, the tide is reduced to a trickle for very much needed seconds of repose while the skeletons are forced to move in glue, some even snapping they’re legs.

You went with quantity, holding this line you’ve created will be very easy, the undead are much too stupid to stop walking forward.

Finally, the ghost, a girl of pinkish hair and blue clothes float near a corpse missing an arm and half of its face, she move as if underwater, her clothing and hair constantly moving, you see several purple petals falling from her movement and, without spectacle, her form completely dissipate into the corpse that, swiftly, pull itself upward: the single empty eye socket burn in a purple flame and it point forward, to the mansion you remember seeing at a glance, now much more defined in the horizon.

This tide of undead has no end, the entire horizon all around you, is filled with… probably thousands of them.

That house is a more defensible position, but still we must find the summoner or artifact granting them the power to move during the day. It has to be giving off some form of powerful magic so I say somebody try and scan for it. I say we head for that house, not much else to lose here. After all, we're damn good, but we can't fight off an entire fucking army. Retreat is most definitely recommended.

All this time, you didn’t pay attention to Ame, your queen had been busy : 9 orb of flame gravitate around her and, when she close her fan they all launch as one, exploding in the air and creating a rift, the very world fragmenting under her will, a cavernous roar dwarf the raging wind of the angel and, coming out of the 10 meter long fissure, is an enormous burning chimera, trampling into the red tide.

Head of a lion, taunting goat on its back and the tail of a serpent, its fur has been replaced by blue foxfire as are the eyes, not a second after its landing, the mythical beast bellow a scream of flames, as is the goat that, cackling, vomit blue orbs crashing and splashing into the enemy, melting them.

‘’Jump on it!’’

The queen scream, but is soon overtaken by rising bile of black, even so she stand upward as she vomit corruption and the incredibly large creature start running forward, paws leaving burning imprint and squashing undead.

More than enough space to grab something, not that it’s going to be easy but the first one to land is Sylphis, the nimble mantis quite literally charged and jumped on the creature head, grabbing its fine mane and trying to reel by pulling which only annoy the beast, but slow it down enough for everyone else to grab as it passé your position, the goat and serpent vomiting more than enough gout of flames to buy you precious, precious times.

However the queen would not prove so resilient.

Sylphis scream, around you, the ride tide is almost vaporized when the chimera make contacts, the creature burn and roar with enough force to be heard well into the forest, Hadraniel plated hand help you up and you continue to hold the queen on your shoulder, exhausted but smiling.

It was the time of a blink, Hadraniel froze when she realized something but, unfortunately, the angel was too late, much too late.

You didn’t even have time to finish your sentence, the holy maiden was grabbed and launched off the mythical beast by a blur of black coming from your direction, but the angle made it so that it was a charge from the air, but it might have been luck, or Hadraniel failure, that granted such a perfect aim.

The two met the ground at a force much too great for any mortal to bear, a hole was formed before they bounced, trampling and killing off the undead, and soon strong spasm of corruptions littered the ground and literally melted every single skeleton trying to take a step closer to whatever was imprisoning Hadraniel in its arms, a black humanoid shadow, able to exist thank to the clouded sun.

Too much a distance is put between you and her already, you already have your armful trying to keep the weakening Ame form falling!

The sudden disappearance of the angel left everyone stunned, the screams and grunts ceased for a few seconds as everyone tried to process what it is, exactly, that just happened. Hadraniel managed to get you up enough to keep a stronger grip on the chimera and, embracing Focus, you put Ame on its back and immediately form several piece of very sticky goo to hold her in place, the Alchemist maneuver to make certain she doesn’t fall but the seconds trickle inexorably, you don’t have time to reach the head of that creature.

‘’Sylphis! Back! Have it go back!’’

As you hold on for dear life, you scream to the mantis who, completely short of ideas, throw herself on the beast and make its eyes, forcing its head to turn and, like a reluctant vehicle, the Chimera obey in roars and flame as the two other heads continue to spew blue foxfire, melting undead by the tens, but the masking of its vision and complete inability to harm Sylphis thank to Ame command bore fruits, the mythical beast change direction and, after much too long, you clumsily face Hadraniel landing point, none of your companions uttering a single word of protest over what is, essentially, suicide.

The blood red, roots covered skeletons are no match for the trampling, each is either evaporated or completely gored by the large burning paws, a few tens of seconds to reorient the beast is all it took but already, the landing is covered in black living tar, your wretched foes charge in increasing tides but they find themselves covered by this liquid and, soon enough, they’re bodies melts as they can’t move, frozen in place and eternally consumed.

Sylphis screams and, without knowing, you obey, liberating Ame and, even if she seems alright, you grab her and let go of the incredibly large creature, making sure to push yourself off for increased velocity.

You land in corruption, it’s hot, viscous and appetizing, but you feel a strong surge of magic and the ground light up on blue fire, Ame spells is channeled and completely evaporate this messy tar, and, you realize, everyone has been separated due to uneven jumping, with the same circle of flame following them, the kitsune magic is working as a ward against corruption it seems.

However, up in the sky is your bodyguard clumsily keeping herself afloat, but soon the vision of the chimera leave you stunned: the beast is being literally eaten alive by this lake, several serpents jutted out of the ground and imbedded themselves in it, others went and rolled around its legs, pulling the beast right into its depth, the poor creature melting and rendered completely useless, dead, just like that.

‘’Stay here’’

You whisper to the queen and gently put her down, but she’s already busy chanting another spell, you are the closest to Hadraniel, your fingers tingle as you caress the case containing the scroll, the nightmare is facing you and it’s simply a silhouette, a male one, much more lean than last time without eyes or mouth and you notice that the angel – your angel- is being pulled into the lake, already half of her body is gone and she’s struggling to push herself up, unfortunately, this being is barring your path.
