Yo I've actually found the best strategy is to have your Hero Piece be an Illusionist King, and have your opponent believe it's your Queen. The GM can help with this, but it's right there in the illusionist class specs if your opponent pulls a babby.

Buff up your queen with dickloads of illusory goodies and rush her into your enemy's lines surrounded by a rook-ram. Have your king sneak around and assassinate theirs, taking his place before anyone notices, and calling for a full surrender. Slaughter everyone in the chaos.

I've never amassed enough points nor got good enough rolls to remove that effect the king has by default where it can't move into check (can't remember what it's called). Everytime I've tried, whoever I'm fighting puts my king in awkward situations where I can't do anything, or distracts my attention to elsewhere on the field.
>>
Okay so where do we start here? Rounds and turn-order? I;d prefer "Write down each piece's move, then move all together, resolve battles."
>>
>>21565390

Shit man, why would you want to move the king into check? That natural negative modifier on all melee rolls is crippling. Keep them back and use them for the leadership aura, the buffs that gives are crazy.
>>
>>21565377
Source books which add additional 'royalty' type pieces are such bullshit. Court Wizard from 'Tower of Mages' and 'The King's Castle' is okay, but that's it.
>>
>>21565377
Princes are fucking easy.
Moves like any other piece, but only forward like a pawn.
What's so difficult about that?
I, on the other hand, really hate when people give the Rook the "once per game move like a bishop" power out of Clerics and Castles.
>>
>>21565422
>Implying you don't use the Duke/Princess combo at every opportunity.
>>
>>21565412
It's all about which class you get the king into. In some tiny bit of the core book, which I can never find, it gives rules on a king exclusive melee class which turns him into a never ending rape train.
>>
>>21565390
Yeah, the trick is to really force your opponent to deal with the queen/rook bomb - even without real buffs, the illusory buffs demoralize the shit out of your opponents, and fortresses can't stand against a rook-ram anyways. She's a beast in melee with her base stats in any case - that way, your king can literally appear to be sitting back, doing nothing, and then by the first winter you should have theirs replaced.
>>
I usually play chess at the local library. If things go bad, just cast Gateway to open a passage to any other games already in progress.

Best to negotiate terms with your new ally before sending your pieces through however.

One time I was losing badly to a guy exploiting the double-strike rule for all it's worth so I used Gateway to join in a game between some grandfather and his granddaughter.

With my help, he thrashed her, but I could tell his heart wasn't in it.
>>

Summoner bishops you say? I have a related story.

>Two hours so far of carefully managing my resources while my opponent tries to make it through my wall of Rooks.
>He's got a summoner bishop headed to the front
>He's been building up this guy's power by sacrificing pawns to the dark gods since turn 1
>I'm scrambling for something to protect me, GM is rolling on the floor laughing at me
>His summoner arrives
>Completely botched roll
>Summoner is possessed by demons
>We're speechless as the GM makes some rolls and wipes half my opponent's forces off the board.
>tfw I swept through with my level 4 berserker knights and obliterated the rest of his forces

Dude. Princes can only go forward. Just jump them with a Knight you pleb.
The princess is a legit complaint though. If she's backed up by a wizard tower or two knights with the Courting upgrade, she's virtually unkillable.
>>
Until they fix the pawn/queen shit, I dont wanna hear anything more.

Also Kings go from unbuffed pieces of worthlessness to overpowered zerg monsters in like 3 turns with the Knight/Queen trick.

You can't explain that.

Hey guys, what does /tg/ prefer?

a) An army identical to or based on the original game (*atleast* one king, one queen, eight pawns, and two of everything else), with additional pieces thrown in.

b) Completely customised/original armies (e.g. entirely bishops, knights and warlords, plus the mandatory king and five pawns).

>>
>>21565723

Hey, some of those armies are pretty damn fun to play. Unless you're just one of those HURR DURR BILLION ATTACKS bastards.

I always like advancing a double stacked pawn wall with to connect two rooks to enable their This Far And No Further rule, and shut down half the board until they breach the wall. for extra trolling, you can keep a pair of knights behind the wall to try and take out guys who can breach the line, and if a bishop uses excommunication to banish or convert one of the rooks, you can use the Knights Rally The Charge and try and push the pawns all the way to the armory before you opponent can react and hope you roll good on the promotions.

Yeah, yeah, I get my shit kicked in if I try and play competitively, but it's just a lot of fun.
>>
>>21565818
Then use knights with lich-forged blades. You can drop two knights from your list and equip all the rest of your force with them with the regained points. Then it's just matter of starting the decay/necrosis combo and your opponent has the choice of either scattering his rooks or losing the majority.

Do you even try to make knights work or do you just play them 'cause omg knights are soooo cooooool

I agree, let me try to put this thread back on track a little...

>Late game
>My forces are scattered, his have been whittled down but he's got a strong core protecting the king
>Having trouble regrouping due to his alchemist king throwing smoke grenades everywhere
>End up with a queen showdown in the middle of the board
>Fate of the game pretty much resting on this
>He's playing witch queen, so his queen is obviously incredibly deadly
>I'd neglected my queen's experience early on and had struggled to catch her up in power
>Wind blows smoke cover over my Queen, blocking LoS
>Desperate, he tries an area attack
>Botched rolls, explosion drifts back over onto his Queen, remaining bishop, and three pawns
>mfw

Great game overall, the dice gods were really in my favor. Gonna play him again next week and keep a closer eye on his queen next time 'cause I doubt I'll get that lucky twice.

Spoilers from the next rumored army book. It's the Jungle Savages from down south that they've been hinting at for years.

Get this rule: "King of the Jungle" There is no fucking king. For rules references purposes their "King" is the strongest unit left alive on the board, but you can't beat them through checkmate...

It sounds like pawns x10... way to cater to the meta game.

I know it. If he hadn't been worried about my forces regrouping (I still had a couple of level three bishops with doublecast and two level five death knights I was trying to get formed into a squad) he wouldn't have done anything so risky. He should have just waited me out though, honestly. Even with the death knights I'd have needed a fair amount of luck to pull a win out of that mess.

That's true. I feel like Poleis had a lot of good ideas but it just didn't mesh with the rest of the game. Gone are the days of royal assassins (what they call "assassins" these days are laughable), double dealings, and intrigue.

Has anyone tried out a campaign tournament yet? My FLGS had one last month, took the whole weekend. Building up your forces in out of combat turns, maneuvering armies, and then getting into the nitty-gritty. Takes about 10 players to do well and costs a fortune to run though.

>>
>>21566740
It's not that hard but I see where you can get confused.

Knightguard triggers during the attack phase. Bishopbuff triggers during damage resolution.

So you choose which knight is going to take the blow, then you move onto damage resolution and if that knight is in range of the bishop he gets the benefits of their buff.

Now the trick to remember is in the new edition the OPPONENT chooses which knight within range takes the blow. It's a subtle difference, but it makes a world of a difference.

Of course most Knight players don't even realize this, because they never activate Knightguard because they never run any Royalty besides the manditory king, so, you know. Not saying all Knight players are noobs or anything, they just dont have a real reason to ever see that skill.

OK guys, don't quote me on this because it's just a rumor, but I've heard some exciting stuff about 10e. Most notably the addition of a new class: the Vizier.

PROS:
+ Incredible buffer. Can grant big tactical bonuses to both combat and maneuverability for your ENTIRE ARMY as long as he's within range of your king or king substitute.
+ Not too shabby in a one-on-one confrontation, unlike most buffing classes

CONS:
-Basically has to be attached to the king if you want to reap his benefits, which can slow your king down, and pretty much eliminates any possibility of getting any use out of him in combat.
-If he gets captured, unlike a normal piece, he will start working for the enemy instead of just leaving play.
-Somewhat high point cost. I guess you can't really expect across-the-board buffs to come cheap.

Seems like a fun new strategy, though. Very high risk/high reward, which I like. Of course, if you're up against a rushdown set who can check you quickly, you might be boned, I can't imagine it'd be very easy to keep both of them safe at the same time.
>>

Wouldn't necrosis lists counter this by making him revive as a zombie? My lichblade list maybe would get a major buff because of this if so. I could field the Vizier with no worry of him changing sides, which would give my zombie pawns some badly needed maneuver bonuses.
>>
>>21566923

I don't know, but I'm pretty sure that zombie Viziers wouldn't have any of the benefits of normal ones, if only for fluff reasons. I'm pretty sure the amount of advice that a zombie can offer is... limited. A Vampire or Lich Vizier, on the other hand, might be useful for preventing him from getting captured in the first place, AND would prevent him from being taken if you lose him to Crusaders or any other holy army (that "no undead" rule can really bite you in the ass if your opponent is playing a tricky control style army). However, I'm gonna guess that it won't be that worth it for 2 reasons:

1. templating an already high-cost piece with a template which he won't be able to use most of the time seems like a waste of valuable points
2. If TVtropes has taught me anything, it's that Viziers are traitorous by default. I'm pretty sure that if the Vizier gets overwhelmed, he's pretty much going to switch to what he perceives as the winning side even if he IS a vampire or lich, which could really fuck you over if it happens in the early game.

DO NOT PLAY THE DIPLOMACY VARIANT!

I don't know what brain-dead monkeys they got to playtest this crap, but it is COMPLETELY unbalanced and absolutely RIFE with abuse.

There's one ability you can get for your king simply called "You Owe Me", which effectively gets him out of non-mate checks FOR FREE as long as you have diplomats (and if you've built your army right, you'll ALWAYS have them). But that's not even the worst part. The worst part is a little ability called "Diplomatic Immunity". It can be applied to ANY royalty piece, and it makes that piece LITERALLY UNKILLABLE. Seriously, as long a royalty piece with Diplomatic Immunity doesn't attack any enemy royalty and you have Diplomats, it can do WHATEVER THE FUCK IT WANTS and you're powerless to stop it. And then of course, it can break immunity whenever it wants when it's time to come in for the checkmate.

So I repeat: DON'T PLAY THE DIPLOMACY VARIANT, because it's completely abuse-or-lose.
>>
>>21567283
Dude, read the errata before you start bitching. Diplomatic Immunity only applies to pieces on their enemies side of the board, and is lost once they make an attack roll of any kind. It's no more broken then infiltration is, and you'll never see someone bitching about that unless they went and left their king open on a flank like a dipshit.

Don't forget, it also depends on what the GM states. Remember, it's ChessRPG after all. The GM is there to arbitrate and help tell the story of the battles that are about to occur.

I hate it when people forget about that.

Shit, they did away with the GM? Jesus Christ no wonder there's such a fucking power creep.
>>
>>21568349
Na, there's still a GM, he just has a lot less say. He's more like a Game Judge or Game Referree rather than a Game Master now.

10e is confirmed to make a GM-free version possible with streamlined experience rules.

How's your homebrew mary sue order going?
>>
>>21568399
I heard the rules actually state that GMs are now optional depending on your rule configuration. I think you only have to have one if you're playing extended phases or classic now, feel free to prove me wrong on that one though.
>>
>>21568463
Yeah, I play Knightly Orders. So what. My other army >>21566545
Eat my ass.
>>
>>21568489
Technically, you need one for extended or campaign, because no player is supposed to be in charge of the landscape or world, but I've never encountered a game in which the GM didn't have an army. There's a certain amount of trust involved, but if the GM starts making bullshit calls in his own favor he would get called out pretty quickly. It's sort of a self-policing system.
>>
Rookfag here.

I've always found Bishops to be unreliable/underpowered. Sure they can have some strong effects if you roll well, but all it takes is one botched spell and you're done. Why do people insist on playing that over stuff like Fortification Rooks? Walls so much better than swingy but unreliable spells.

Hey guys I'm thinking about taking this list to the table sunday, wondering if I could get some opinions on it:

1 x Plague King with Virus AoE
1 x Dark Queen
2 x Death Knights
2 x Bone Towers
4 x Knights with Lichblades
20 x Virus Pawns
2 x Death Jesters with Wraithbone Daggers

It's for tourney play if it wasn't obvious from the size of the army. Obviously it's Jump/Disease but I'm worried about facing off against Fire Kingdom with a list like this. Also, an undead army could wipe me but no one plays undead for shit around here.
>>
>>21568597
I would probably drop two of the Knights w/ Lichblade and swap out the Dark Queen for a full Witch Queen.
The Witch Queen/Bone Tower/Death Knight combo is too strong to pass up and is really fluffy too.
I don't know about the virus pawns. Do you plan on just zerging the middle while the knights go up the flanks or what?
Because remember that virus pawns detonate when they are killed, and that CAN affect your own units.
Death Jesters are a nice touch. Probably overcosted for what they do, but they're fun.
Consider dropping one and taking a vampire Baron for additional shits and giggles.
>>
>>21568673
Yeah, the plan was to use the Jesters as my king killers, with knights to back them up and the Queen as my heavy hitter. Virus Pawns are just going to swamp up the middle ground to keep my forces from getting rushed by Knights Orders and such.

Somebody archive this thread. It's amazing.

Um. Virus pawns aren't going to do shit against knights. Knights jump. Gyphon knights even more so.

I'm actually going to start putting together rules for this.

Alright, so I found what I think is a nice little setup. A line of pawns, a few boomerknights behind them, another, shorter line of pawns, and then a few bishops geared up to the gills, with range, rate and overwatch upgrades. No points left for a queen, but behind it all is a Lich King.

The boomerknights strike-and-return anything that threaten the pawns, which tie down attackers until the bishops blast them to bits. Lich king animates fallen pawns instantly with his Sugar Skull and gives them counterattacks with his Grim Maracas.

Slowly advancing wall of doom. Simple, right? But I've only done causal play so far. How would it do against tournament lists?

I don't know, I've seen a few threads about this and I think people would probably enjoy it if it were done right and if we're wrong we'll just have wasted a little time and the jokes can resume

Nice list against most but a few will have a decent counter. Example:

1xPlague Jester with Trickster Buff
10x Virus Pawns
2x Death Knights
1x Bone Tower
2x Bishops with Unholy Clergy
3x Wizard towers

The Plague Jester will jump around spreading the DISEASE debuff which will tick-down your Knights and the Trickster buff gives him extra evade rolls.

The Wizard Towers will forego attacking and create an Anti-magic shell for 1d4 turns on your king

Virus Pawns to suicide-rush your pawns and then you can't rezz them right away with King. While Death Knights run in being augmented by Bone tower to mop up your Bishops

The two bishops will use the "Day of the Dead" Ritual to convert most of your dead to life and then attack you with it.

This list isn't common though and doesn't work on anyone that Isn't magic-oriented or has Holy-Buffed Bishops.
>>
>>21569678
I don't have my book handy but it seems to me that's not enough points for most tourneys, unless boomerknights have really gone up in cost or your bishops are crazy overloaded with gear. You could probably squeeze in a queen or upgrade those pawns to something a little more substantial.

The list will work well against Knight Orders and Rookstrong lists but Fire Kingdom master race like me will make you weep with our red haired rooks and great flame bishops.
>>
>>21569919
Fire Kingdom is outdated and more and more tourneys are banning anything older than 7e
>>
Ok, if you don't think it would ruin it. Here is the bare bones. I have to get back to work now. You may call me KnightFag.

this thread totally reminds me of playing chess with my six year old nephew. He is more familiar with vidya than chess, so pieces keep getting extra life gems (marbles hidden under the pieces) and I get decimated by Tornado Strike when I get too far ahead. I gotta say, he plays quite an imaginative game! He'll be a killer DM some day.

YES! I only have the second set of cards though. I've found it to be a great equalizer and a good way to introduce the M:tG generation to the royal game.

How would you make a scout who has no combat capabilities, but can escape combat?

OK, that was pretty creative. An actual meld of Shogi and Go that led to a good game. Didn't think it could be done!

Fleetfoot pawns with winged sandles. Stack on fog spells from stormlord bishops for double the fun.

Man don't even get me started on how broken Tornado Strike was back in 4.5th Edition.

I'm signing off for now, I've filled out most of the army lists and added comments on the playstyles and themes of each.

How do I find the document to add more things later after the thread is gone?
