You are a Magical Girl, and that's pretty much all that you can remember - well, besides the rather strange memory of a pink-haired girl tearing your heart out of your chest. Even stranger is the fact that while you should feel horror with that kind of memory - it certainly looked quite real, real enough that you felt a slight twinge of pain whenever it came to mind - all you feel is relief. A peaceful kind of relief, the kind someone would normally get when they found out that they've been saved at the last minute. Saved from making the biggest mistake of their life.

You should probably be worried about that. Just like you should be worried about how you don't even know anything about the people you're now having breakfast with, or where you're having breakfast at the moment. They seemed nice enough, that's for sure, and you have the strangest feeling that you're someone important to them. The one with the weird hands and legs seemed to imply such. The one with the green hair seemed to REALLY imply such - you're not so stupid as to miss why the pancake at the bottom of your pile was cut carefully and fastidiously in the shape of a heart.

Only a blithering, drunken idiot would miss that kind of signal. A bigger one would've ignored it.
>>
>>21606507

You didn't say anything about that, though. You just tore it apart and devoured it as you did the rest, before clinking your fork against the plate and asking for seconds. The girl nearly toppled over from her seat in her attempt to get up quickly enough from the table, earning a gentle admonition from the freak with claws and a derisive snort from her boyfriend.

There's a bit of a mood around the kitchen, and you guess that it's because of that question you posed just a little while ago. Both Kharn and Midori - you think that's what their names are - had stared at you for a long moment, before looking down on their plates. Neither of them seemingly eager to answer the question. You resumed eating a few moments after that - you still wanted to know, of course, but you didn't want your breakfast to get cold. Maybe you'll save it for another time, another place. The mood was awkward enough as it is.

As you wait for your second pile of pancakes, something falls out of your inventory, hitting your leg on the way down to the floor. You blink at this, and reach down to pick it up. It seems to be a book of sorts. An illustrated novel, competently drawn, too.

"A-ah, sempai, that's--" You hear Midori freeze in her tracks as you lift the book clear from underneath the table.

You turn towards her, one eyebrow raised. What's gotten to her all of a sudden?

"Nothing, sempai! E-everything's alright!" She says after a moment, beaming, as she replaces your empty plate with one bearing your second helping. "T-that book, though, um..."

Thinking of that - now that we have kept the book at our person for extended period of time, Midori will want it back. So she can treasure it, sniff it, cuddle it at night, etc.

"It's...uh, how do I say this..." You watch Midori wring her hands as she glances at you, at the book, then back again at you, seemingly fumbling for a way to express herself. She vaguely resembles a child trying weigh her options, limited as they were: lie now and risk punishment upon discovery later, or come clean and get the spanking over with.

You glance down at the cover as you wait for her to finish gathering her thoughts, examining it in full detail. Seems like that sort of manga girls buy - the ones with the all-too-large sparkly eyes, dainty physiques and meticulously-drawn flowers adorning every page. The title, The Adventures of Miracle Midori and Murder Mayumi, doesn't give away much of the book's subject matter - but the two girls embracing rather closely just behind the title script does.

"A-ah, ah, um--" You turn towads Midori, and she's going quite red in the face, sweat dotting her brow. "I-it's just a small hobby of mine, s-sempai, i-it's a self-publishing deal, n-not realy all that big to begin with--"

...Oh. So she draws manga in her spare time? That's...that's actually impressive. You haven't really peeked at the pages inside, but judging by the cover alone, this seems to be quite the labor of love. She seems to be really bothered about you holding it, though, and while you're taking a rather perverse joy out of seeing her squirm there, with spaghetti inside her pockets.

"Murderface," Kharn clicks her tongue at you in slight admonishment. "Do not be like that. Give the poor girl her book back."

"Well, um, Miss Kharn, technically it's not mine..." Midori smiles nervously at the raven-haired woman, all while reaching for the book in your hands. You blink at this, pulling the volume away slowly. "B-but, I should probably keep it, just in case...n-no, sempai, let me just take care of it--"

"It's mine," The young man, who'd been furiously typing from behind his laptop, suddenly snaps, and the book is rudely torn from your grasp. "Sorry. I lent it to you earlier, before your procedure. Something for you to read while we got the equipment warmed up." He nods at Midori, while all three of you blink at him - Kharn especially. "Sorry about that, Hanegawa. Didn't mean to make it look like I'm being careless with your work. I'm a big fan."

"O-oh, that's..." Midori seems to be rather stunned at the turn of events, before working up a smile. "E-er, n-no, that's fine, Souji-san. I was just wondering how it got here, that's all. I...I didn't know they delivered all the way here to Siberia."

Strange bunch, these people. All this fuss for a girly manga. You shake your head, and make to work on those pancakes when you stop for a moment, Midori's shaky reply finally sinking in. You look up at all three of them in turn.

...Siberia? That's where you are, right now?

"Ah, yes, Siberia," Kharn nods after a moment, a small, guilty smile on her face. "Just a few miles off from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Is heavily-fortified subterrenean base, built for Research and Development. Something the Incubator handed over to this girly comics-reading pervert--" She elbows Souji sharply in the side, causing the latter to grunt quietly in pain. "--to develop new toys for the Officio's Magical Girls to use. That includes you, Murderface."

"S-sempai isn't a weapon," Midori protests, but Kharn shrugs at this.

"At the end of the day, all Magical Girls are weapons." She licks at the tip of her fork, accidentally giving you a flash of her..well, remarkably-long tongue. You can't help but stare. "All of us are. The Incubator just rents us out once in a while."

[2/3]
>>
>>21607077

You take a moment from gawking at Kharn to look down at your plate.

So that's why it felt weird. Of course, you inferred from the rather long elevator ride earlier that you were somewhat underground, and the way this entire floor was made to look like the insides of an apartment did help calm you some - but even then, you felt strangely...imprisoned, somehow. A nagging, needling urge that told you that you shouldn't be here, that you should be above ground. An irrational sensation of claustrophobia, of being...well, buried alive. Horribly morbid, but it was there.

You try to ignore it by shoving another forkful of syrup-coated pancake into your mouth.

Christ, Kharn's got a long tongue. Where'd she get that? Do all Russian girls have tongues like that, or something? Did she get it done? What?

What do you do, now?

There are three ideas I got about what could be behind our sudden onset of amnesia.

1. I could be down to our origins (which I am not really sure about yet.)

2. Godoka going Kali Ma on us.

3. Perhaps Kyuubey gave secret orders to Souji and/or Kharn to induce a 'temporary' memory block on us during the procedure to see if we remember anything about our true origins.

You have some questions in your head that you'd probably be a whole lot better off asking. Something about the base, for example - something in Kharn's explanation could probably trigger something inside your head, jar your gray matter hard enough that you'd remember something else other than a girl with pink hair killing you Aztec-style. Asking about the Incubator seems like a good idea too - after all, it sounds like he's the one responsible for the entire operation, and while you can't exactly process it, it seems like you've heard of that term before. Either of the two could've been a better option, really, and you do want to stop being the last to be picked up by the Clue Train, here.

But of course you don't pick those options. Not when there's something much more important to ask about, here. Something that needs to be asked about right away, and not a moment sooner.

"What the fuck is up with your tongue?" You hear yourself ask the woman with the metal claws for hands and blades for feet, apropos of absolutely, completely nothing.

Everything simply stops, right then and there. As if the world had suddenly been frozen in time.

Except for Kharn. Her face, normally pale as it is, quickly goes from its usual milky white to a rather interesting shade of red. Her blank, stunned face slowly twisting to one of frank, mortified embarrassment. She lowers her face, slightly, one brutally-clawed hand quickly coming up to cover her mouth.

There is nothing to hear in the kitchen except for Midori's breathing, and Souji's surprised, nasally laughter.

A laughter that is quickly choked off by a small, painful whine, following a small flicker of movement under the table.

[1/2]
>>
>>21607451

"M-my tongue, Murderface?" Kharn looks back up at you, in an expression curiously similar to Midori's own, earlier. "I-I, ah, I do not know what you are saying. It is...it is normal, like yours, yes? J-just a bit longer than average, c-certainly nothing to get excited about--" She turns toward Souji, still covering her mouth with a hand.

A bit longer than average? Who was she trying to kid? It looked longer than your damn forearm!

"Sempai, you probably shouldn't--" Midori tries to speak up, a look of worry on her face.

I think that Gen Urobochi, the guy behind the Madoka series, once claimed to be a "healing type writer". I don't think anyone really knows what the hell he was talking about, but the odd phrase has stuck around regardless.
It seems to just be used these days to describe writers like Gen who make the characters suffer a lot and just write depressing atmospheres.

People thought he was going to make Madoka a more lighthearted experience. That's what he said, at least. This theory was supported when it turned out the character designer would be Aoki Ume.
Then he remembered 'fuck this shit, I'm Gen Urobuchi!' and beheaded Mami, witchified Sayaka, murder-suicided Kyouko, killed Madoka multiple times, witchified and killed Sayaka again, killed Kyouko again, killed Mami again and killed Sayaka again.

It makes sense in context.

You decide to let up on the issue. As entertaining as it is to behold someone like Kharn squirm in obvious embarrasment and social discomfort, even you can see that she's suffered quite enough. You'll just ask about her tongue some other time, probably when there's no one else around but the both of you. A private exhibition of what it can do, perhaps. See if she can double-knot a cherry stem, or something.

In any case, you break off from the subject of Kharn's tongue for the time being, and ask her about the base, and the Incubator that owns it. She seems to be grateful enough to respond gamely, despite being quite self-conscious with how she replies (and covering her mouth still while talking, nudging Souji ever so often to append supporting data to her answers).

What you learn is decidedly vague, but enough: it's a heavily-fortified base with enough firepower to take over a small country; it has a total of a hundred subterranean levels, sixty of which is only accessible by her and Souji; if something were to happen that would force the base to lock down, anyone trapped inside would be able to survive for at least three years with the supplies available; and if all really goes to pot, there are various emergency countermeasures that could probably save the day but definitely not worth going into detail because they were all horribly classified.

As for the Incubator, well, it just so happens that Kharn has a picture of him in her smartphone. She shows it to you - and you blink at the image of a rather docile-looking animal, covered in white fur, seemingly dozing rather contentedly on Kharn's lap. While you've never seen a cat with such long, floppy ears and such a bushy tail - the smug expression on its face definitely resembles a feline one, to you it looks decidedly too smug for comfort.

You'd call it cute, really, but it's just way too damn smug.

"This is way back, before I left Japan and settled down here," Kharn murmurs, the slightest note of wistful tenderness in her voice as she magnifies the photo for you with a tap of her claw on the screen. "He is our Incubator, and while we have disagreed on many things and fought over much more, he...is not so bad, compared to the rest of his kin." She smiles. "I think, out of all of them, he is the kindest."

That mutant cat? Kind?

Kharn nods. The smile still on her face, but still evidently serious.

"He could have had me destroyed, after all," She says, after closing the image. "Instead, I am here, still of use to the Officio despite...current circumstances." Kharn laughs, slightly. "You, of course, ah, you did not like him very much. Very first time you met him, BANG! You splattered him all over Sayaka. She looked like she had very nasty accident with can of whipped cream. She could not get him out of her hair for days!"

That's...well. You're not sure what to think about that. You should probably apologize to this Sayaka person, whoever she is.

"Ahaha! You, Murderface, apologize to Sayaka? That will be the day!"

Even Midori seems to giggle at the thought. "S-sorry, sempai. It's, er, it's hard to see you doing that." She shakes her head. "You and Sayaka-san never seemed to get along." The girl blinks. "E-er, one of your colleagues, anyway, sempai. Blue-haired Eversor. You're friends with her...best friend, Kyoko-san."

Sayaka. Kyoko. Eversors.

Man, this amnesia thing really bites. It's hard to relate when you've got a fucking sieve for a brain.

"Mmm, well, do not look so discouraged, Murderface. I am sure this is permanent, this memory loss. It will all come rushing back to you soon enough." Kharn seems to have gotten over the embarrassment earlier, and pats your shoulder comfortingly with her clawed hand, each pat sounding like a drawer of knives being given a good shaking.

"Why don't we follow the itinerary as planned, now? We have your training to see to! A good opportunity to work out some frustration and anger, and a nice way to get the blood going, eh?" She grins at you, this time, and you have the sneaking suspicion that she might just use this opportunity for some well-deserved payback.

Midori nods at this. "Y-yes, I'd say it's a good idea, sempai. Exercise always helps recenter the mind or body, o-or something like that, I saw it on TV once..."

>>
>>21608232 >>21608270 >>21608310

You look down at your nearly-depleted stack of pancakes, before accepting. Training does sound like a good idea, come to think of it. In fact, you actually feel a bit eager about the entire thing, thirsting to get into a nice, violent scrap with anyone up to the task. As it is, you can't be in better shape - you've just had a hearty breakfast; your mood's surprisingly good despite waking up with no idea of who you are or what you're doing here; and you feel revitalized, refreshed even. Whatever the procedure was, it certainly feels like it's worked. Going nineteen rounds with a mutant alligator would be a piece of cake for you, right now.

Kharn's smile could not be wide enough at this, and she turns towards Souji expectantly. The young man grumbles and taps a few keys. "Yeah, yeah, I'll have the training room ready, just like you asked." A moment. "Are you sure about this? I mean, if she can't remember anything, maybe we should lay off having them there--"

"Now you are worrying too much. They must be there, ready for her use." Kharn pushes her seat back and rises from the table. "They are why she is here! She is to be trained with them!" She seems to pause as Souji looks back at her, before sighing and pinching his cheek, gently.

"Oh, do not look at me like that, lecher. Have trust in your procedure. It will hold, and Murderface will remain as herself." Kharn glances at you, before smiling as she gestures towards your direction with a clawed hand. "Well, what is left of her, anyway. Now, go on. Lead them there, I will follow in a little while. I have to get changed."

"...Right." Another sigh, and Souji clamps his laptop shut as he rises from his own seat - Kharn waving at you and Midori both, in a rather giddy fashion, before making her way out of the kitchen in a motion best described as 'skipping', leaving sparks in her wake.

Someone's excited, obviously.

You turn to the suddenly-crestfallen young man as he makes a half-hearted attempt to pile the plates into the sink, which Midori quickly assists with.

You can't help but wonder just what took place, there, even if you have a slight inkling of just what.

"She gets like this when we have company over," The young man volunteers after a rudimentary post-breakfast cleanup is made, and all three of you have stepped into the elevator. "It's been a bit hard for her to adjust to this kind of routine - doing science stuff, writing it down, doing some more science stuff, writing it down some more."

The elevator doors clang shut in front of you, and it lurches as it starts the journey deeper into the facility. "She trains by herself three hours a day, without fail, but she misses the..." he makes a face. "...danger of live combat, or what I've heard her call it."

Souji shrugs. "Anyway, I'd take it as another personal favor if you try not to get too carried away with her. She tends to get carried away a lot." Another shrug. "Eversors, you know?"

Midori, having divested her apron, is sticking close to you, but thankfully not that close. "I'm sure Miss Valnikov will be able to control herself, Souji-san. I don't think she'd ever willingly hurt Matsuda-sempai." The green-haired girl says as the elevator comes to a stop, the doors opening to reveal a rather...plain, if battered-looking training hall.

[1/2]
>>
>>21609109
There's no reason it can't be both!
>>
>>21609138

It is less hall and more of a vast room, the floors, walls and ceiling grated, riveted steel, with a pathetic white canvas mat at the very center of it. Not a single inch the ceiling and the walls is not scored with either claw, sword orburn marks (or an assortment of all three) and there is the faint scent of blood in the air. Just a hint of it, not enough to point out, but definitely there. Giving the entire place a definite mood of...well, cruelty and barbarity, if the person that regularly used it wasn't enough of a hint.

"It's not Murderface I'm worried about." Souji snaps as he takes out a smartphone from the pockets of his labcoat. He taps at the screen impatiently, and it's with a grind of heavy machinery that the walls of the training hall seem to turn, twist and move - revealing racks of rather brutishly-forged swords and knives designed for...well, people like Kharn. "It's Kharn. She's..." He looks at you, frowning. "...not the type to back down from a fight, especially if she thinks she's met someone better than her." It's then that he smirks. "I'm not saying you are, but just on the off-chance..."

Another tap of his smartphone, and one last rack unfolds itself right from the ceiling, lowered down to the center of the mat by hissing hydraulics. You have yet to step forward to take a closer look, but even without squinting through your glasses, you know that the weapons stored there are not your typical ones.

It's not as if it's any mystery to anyone who'd see them. They're made out of gold. That's already a dead giveaway.

You're just not sure why you think that it's a bad idea to be in the same room with them to begin with.

The elevator doors make their grinding noise yet again, and clanking footsteps make their way towards you. It's Kharn, obviously, and you turn to greet her.

She is wearing nothing but a sports bra and very tight cycling shorts. Spats, that's what they're called. Or you think. You're not too sure. What you're sure about is that your host is quite clearly eager about your training, and her attire is making you feel rather overdressed about the entire thing.

Oh, and she's tied her long hair back into a ponytail. There's that, too.

"Ahh, everything is ready!" Kharn crows, clapping both her clawed hands. "Ah, and so quickly, too! It is record time, I think, eh, Souji?"

"Just try not to burn the entire place down again, Kharn, that's all I'm asking." Souji shakes his head, seemingly studiously ignoring the lightly-attired woman. He gives the screen of his smartphone a couple more taps, before shoving the device into the pocket of his labcoat. "Right. You've got administrator access to everything in the training room for the duration. Anybody gets hurt or you need assistance, you know what to do." He nods towards you, before pushing past Kharn - making his way towards the elevator "Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got real work to do."

"A-ah, okay." Kharn seems a bit stunned at this, but takes it in stride. "Oh, please check on Misaka, make sure she eats breakfast!"

All three of you look back at him as the elevator brings him back up the living quarters.

Wow. You can see where he's coming from, but...does he really need to act like such a dick, sometimes?

If we get some details and they ARE prophetic, then we can just try and avoid those details. Or we can make sure we're prepared when they start coming up. It's not like we didn't just survive getting killed by a god. Whatever. It's probably fine.

Muscle memory isn't a magical force but it is different than your normal memory

The reason it is called muscle memory is that it literally is something you can do without even thinking of it, there are people with dementia for example who can play musical instruments perfectly but not tell you a thing about how they learned to, that is muscle memory vs normal memory

>>
>>21609369 >>21609377 >>21609378

"Souji's dreams?" Kharn seems a bit stunned by your question, as if deflating slightly at the loss of momentum. "Well, er, I suppose he is not here to hear us, he did make me promise not to tell you anything, but..." It's then that she smiles. "Ah, I know it seems like I am living up to my title, but I think he is just being paranoid, really. Maybe it is those anime he watches at night, the sort he argues over the internet about? Something like that, you know. Should not be taken seriously!"

You ask about them, nonetheless, and after a few weird looks, Kharn finally relents. What she tells you paints a rather...surprising picture: Kharn somehow goes berserk and attacks Misaka, wounding her grievously despite Midori's best efforts (and gets murdered for her trouble as well, making the green-haired girl wince beside you). You and the awesome robot from earlier try to fight Kharn off while Souji tries to resuscitate his sister, but Misaka dies from blood loss before anything else could be done. The robot gives its life to save you from a blow that would've sheared your head off your shoulders, his noble sacrifice netting you enough of an opening to send a well-placed shot into Kharn's Soul Gem.

"It was much more boring when he told it, of course," Kharn frowns at both you and Midori. "Anyway, it is all very dramatic and everything, I know, but who takes stock in dreams nowadays, eh? It is nothing! It is like, dreaming about teeth falling out and thinking that you will die in a fortnight! Only grandpas and old ladies believe that!"

Any other day, you'd agree, but it does sound a bit too specific. Still, it could probably just be Souji's imagination, fed by late-night anime and a boring desk job. You turn to Midori, asking her what she made of it. She merely shrugs, although you can see that hearing Kharn's account had disturbed her a bit.

[1/2]
>>
>>21610023
Shit you're right. Kharn really dropped the ball, she could have been Magic Pope. Instead she took her stupid evil stick. She clearly just falls apart without Malal there to remind her what to loot.
>>
>>21609987

that is umm... i hadn't thought of that.

>>21610023

was she even wearing one?
...
why am i now picturing Ahriman as a touhou character!?

>brain we need to talk
>>
This conversation puts a whole new twist on Kharn's skull taking habit. As a posthumous insult she deprives her enemy of the ability to wear a hat.
>>
>>21610067
It was never specified
We can always say she had a bitching Touhou style magical girl pope hat on though
>>
>>21610038

>>

DRAMA~
>>
>>21610094
Dear god. She posthumously dishonors touhous.
>>
>>21610038

"W-well, it's not the first time I've heard about dreams like that. I mean, dreams involving someone dying, and so on, sempai," Midori replies. "They usually turn out to be nothing, even if they seem to be realistic at first. I'd know, I kinda specialize in them a bit." She smiles to herself, slightly.

Well. Something to ask her about later. But in any case, it really doesn't sound like anything you'd worry about. You just met these people, after all, and they seemed to have it together. Something like that happening...it's much too far-fetched, a remote possibility. This isn't some damn third-rate anime drama after all. Dreams being prophetic is all just one big load.

You look to Kharn and tell her that you want to get on with the training. The three of you can worry about her boyfriend's fantasies later. Or maybe just her, really. You're not interested.

"M-Murderface! We are only colleagues!" The ponytailed russian protests as she follows you onto the mat, her bladed feet making muffled noises on the canvas. Midori stays well out of it, standing by the elevator, waving you with a murmured good luck as you leave her behind. Her smartphone in her hand, aimed at your retreating back.

She should learn to lie better, if she's going to keep up the pretense. It's not like you were born yesterday.

...Well, you woke up today with no memory of anything prior to your nap, so you may as well have been born today. But that's not the point.

"...Murderface, sometimes, you frustrate me," Kharn groans, but she gives you a resigned smile. "Fine. Maybe I will tell you about it, someday. But yes, we have..." She makes a cyclical gesture with a clawed hand, a strangely delicate movement that you can't help but admire. "...an understanding. For what it is worth, I am not as lonely as I was before."

[2/3]
>>
>>21610156

You nod at Kharn, and offer her your congratulations. She blushes quite a bit, before accepting them with a nod of her own.

"...I think I like you more now, Murderface, now that you are a blank slate. Well, Of course, I love the one I served with, but I hope you will not lose this when you remember everything again, eh?" She flashes you a rather cheeky grin, before gesturing to the racks of weapons around you. "Ah, now, enough talk! Let us begin your training! I think a warmup will do for now!" She points towards a rack close to you. "Pick something from there, Murderface. We shall take it slow, I think."

You glance at the rack, frowning at its contents. "What're these wooden things, Kharn? Chairs?"

"Idiot." Kharn huffs at you. "They are training instruments. Stop fooling around!"
