It is the year 2114, and humanity has spread to the stars. Unified as the Terran Colonial Alliance and headquartered on Earth, Terra and her colonies have built a steady and mostly prosperous civilization, with one goal, to live and thrive among the stars.

In 2109, all that changed. After several years of discovering archaeological evidence of alien civilizations, outer colony worlds encountered a powerful and hostile alien culture, who call themselves the Progenitors. Progenitors exist on the tech level beyond mankind, apparently leftovers from an older and even more powerful civilization that at their peak, destroyed themselves. Now the Progenitors have one goal, to rebuild an empire that spans the stars. To do so, Progenitors capture and alter sentient species based on their existing ability, and the Progenitors' need, and destroy all who resist. As such, they have begun attacking human worlds with their armies of servitor races, capturing humans where they can, and demolishing what they cannot hold. In the five years of what we call the "First Contact War", humanity has held its own, but not without significant losses, including a number of far colony worlds. Now it's time for you to join the fight.

You were born on Arcadia, one of the new Far Colonies, an agriworld on a planet with slightly below earth gravity, founded in the last 20 years. Like most young people who didn't feel like farming, mining or desk work, you joined the Colonial Militia at age 16. At age 17, the Progenitors attacked Arcadia, and damned burned everything to the ground. You and 100s of other militia personnel fought and bled for every inch of Arcadia before being evacuated by Colonial Allied Forces.

You were always good at what you did, and someone noticed. When you got back to the nearest Fleet Command base, you were approached and asked to join the Special Operations Division (SOD), colloquially known by most people in your neck of the woods as "BLACK". Ready for some pay-back, you gladly accepted.

Military Intelligence, "Spooks" (Grunts of the SOD, do all kinds of intelligence gathering, including frequent field ops. Rank: Operator)
Headhunters (Elite SOD field operatives, specializing in small team tactics, and all manner of operations, especially wetwork. Rank: Squad Leader)
Special Projects Division (Oddball unit for SOD. Basically Jack of All Trades who test experimental equipment, guard research projects, or engage in "research procurement")

Note: I will allow you guys to "reroll" the character if there's sufficient demand up until the point where stuff is happening in the universe, but I'm only going through all this once, so make sure you get it right the first time.

Also, Special Projects rank is "Operator", which is higher than Squad Leader because it's an officer equivalency rank, and Squad Leader is a NCO equivalent rank.

After putting you through basic Special Operations School, SOD discovered through your aptitude tests you were actually much smarter and more quick-witted than you let on, and sent you to the Special Operations Academy back on Earth, where you mixed survival, combat and espionage training with crash courses in as many sciences as you could handle. That complete, you were given the title of Operator, and sent to Aegis IV, a heavily fortified and isolated world in the Near Colony sector that serves as SPD's HQ.

Shortly after arriving at Aegis IV, PROJECT AEON was begun. Progenitors and their most elite servitor races exhibit what can only be classified as "Psi", and when converting humans to a new servitor type (Called "Adjutants") they imbued them with Psychic Ability. Unfortunately for them, the underestimated the resilience of certain humans, and a small percentage of Adjutants were able to retain individuality, and escaped or were recovered, giving humans access to Psi. You were a compatible subject, and now serve as a living test of human Psi ability, training and limitations. Your time is split between testing and developing your new psychic abilities, and field "tests".

More just a general dog-tag thing. Though lots of soldiers in America put "JEDI" as their religion which ends up on their tags, as far as I understand.

The other thing reminded me, I didn't list the LT's Psi Talents, which are Telepathy (Which you can use to try and order certain Servitor species around), Telekinetic Barriers and Psychokinesis (Short-range object movement) and Reinforcement (Take a few seconds to Psionically steel yourself and improve your accuracy, reaction time, resistance to mental attacks)

>Aegis IV, 04:57 Local Time. Special Projects Division HQ, Aegis Base

You stir in your sleep, the faint "wake-up" alarm tones rousing you from deeper sleep. Gentle blue illumination hits the back of your eyelids, and you roll over onto your side. You open your eyes, awareness crystallizing in your mind. SOD doesn't pay you to sleep heavy. You observe the clock display and discover that it's earlier than your normal wake up call. You roll back over and face the holostrip, as the "wake-up" tone switches to "incoming call". "Bridges." you say, voice a little muffled by the last traces of sleep. You're greeted by the soft, slightly electronic voice of Sierra, Aegis Base system AI. "Lieutenant Bridges, you have been ordered to Briefing Room 1." Well, now you know your day is off to a great start. If they were doing another round of surprise tests, you'd have been called to the Project Aeon Room. You sit up in bed and plant your feet on the cold metal floor. "May I ask as to who'd paging me, Sierra?" you say, as you turn up your room lights half way with a casual flick of psychokinesis. "Deputy Director Ruiz issued the page. She, Dr. Paulson and Unit Commander Van Hout are waiting for you there." So, ALL of your bosses. "Tell them I'm on my way." You say, and stand up.

You quickly dress in your uniform, check and holster your sidearm, and put on your Tactical Wrist Computer. After a second you grudgingly clip the little plastic security badge you're supposed to wear on. Don't want another lecture from Sierra about proper security protocol, even if there are only few dozen guys in PROJECT AEON. You scan your relatively sparse quarters to see if there's anything else you should take, and spy your combat knife. One of the few things you have from Arcadia, you never leave home without it. You tuck it into your belt, and head out, after stopping in the Officer's toilet before you leave.

Aegis Base is mostly dark at this hour, the lights still on "Night Cycle". You pass no one in the halls of the living quarters, not seeing another soul until you take the elevator up to the main operations level, where you see some members of the night shift, and trade nods or salutes as appropriate. You enter briefing room one, and find the SPD head, Deputy Director Ruiz, along with PROJECT AEON head researcher, Dr. Olivia Paulson who is also one of the original liberated Adjutants, and your CO, Unit Commander Van Hout. You stand at attention, but Ruiz quickly gestures you to relax. She's the one who speaks first. "I'll make this quick Lieutenant, because I have to leave in less than 30 minutes to make an in-person project report to Allied Command on Earth." She gestures at the doctor. "Paulson's connections among the Progenitor Resistance have said that a group of human pirates have set up an outpost on a remote world, and are now collaborating with the Progenitors, trading slaves and human supplies in return for tech upgrades, augmentations and Adjutant bodyguards. Short version, I want to select you as the SPD consultant and Psionic expert for the joint operation their planning to confirm this base and Progenitor involvement, and take appropriate steps. However, because of orders from the Director, I can't risk Psionic assets in a field op without a long approval process, or you volunteer."

"I volunteer, ma'am. Anything for the SPD." You say, while really meaning 'Anything to screw over some Aliens'. She nods, and salutes. "In that case, Lieutenant, I'll let the Doctor and your CO finish the briefing. I'm earth-bound." You return her salute, and she leaves. The Unit Commander nods at the Doctor, who gestures at the hologram table of the briefing room. "You've been picked for this, Norm, because not only are you a combat veteran, but you're experienced in survival and orbital insertion in the field." The holographic image of a planet springs up over the table, along with some relevant statistics. "This one has an official name, but the survey team called it "Snake Pit". It's a slightly heavy world, with strikingly low ground level, so much so that most of the planet's "land" is covered in salt marsh, except for some high enough mountains, and a few volcanic islands rising out of the sea. It's a relatively young world, but too expensive to start terraforming in our current situation, so we skipped it. You and five others will do a high-atmosphere drop from a Utah-class Stealth Frigate, the TCAS Shrike." She turns the briefing over to the Unit Commander. "You'll go over this in more detail on the Shrike, but in general, you will insert outside all possible enemy sensor range, and hike up to the Pirate base and perform recon, then stand by for orders. Any questions?"
>>

"Yeah, sir, why is it called 'Snake Pit'?" You ask. Dr. Paulson shrugs. "Other than it's a giant swamp and the survey team lead is from Georgia?" You try not to give her too blank a look. Paulson is an Earth-Native, so she tends to mention regional names without thinking. She continues, "The planet should be too young to have developed any major fauna yet. Honestly, we're kind of surprised it's got some decent flora."

You turn back to Van Hout. "No questions that wont be handled at the briefing, sir." He nods at you. "Then head down to the hangar, we've got an FTL-bird waiting to take you to the Shrike at Crescendo Naval Base at New Concord. Since this is a interdepartmental exercise, make sure to equip yourself at the Armory here, first." You cock an eyebrow. "How many toys can I bring, sir?" He smirks a little. "This is a combat operation with possible Adjutant presence, and your team may be asked to clear or hold a beachhead for direct intervention by the Shrike's marines. So it's a candy-store keys kind of situation. Your FAFNIR armor is already in the bird." Now you smirk a little too.

I say we go recon with SMG

Recon! That Chamelon coating sounds too good to pass up is it?
>>
>>21689277
I like the recon with the SOD Carbine. It stands to reason that we will want to be close to the enemy to use our powers, so being sniper could become problematic.

Chameleon coating allows your armor to match the appearance of the color and texture of your surroundings. Electronic sensors will still be able to pick you out most of the time, but people would have a harder time seeing you (thus, shooting at you)

Good thing we have those computer skills to rework those sensors later.

You head down to the Armory, and give the Quartermaster a nod and give your equipment request. First you're handed your HG58SD, a revised version of the HG58 PDW designed specially for the SOD. Integrally suppressed and with a lighter frame, the weapon holds 50 5.8mm caseless rounds in the top-loading magazine. You put one in the gun, and then take two more packages of the armor-piercing ammunition. You also pick up three spare magazines of .45 FMJ for your sidearm. Next, you're issued grenades, and also take some signal flares and E-Binoculars. Lastly, you check out a targeting laser, a pistol-sized device which will allow you to point out ground targets for an orbital strike. Calling in a strike from a stealth frigate like the Shrike wont be like calling in one from a Destroyer or Cruiser, or a bomber squadron, but you know the Utah class ships have both orbital-capable railguns and conventional and nuclear torpedoes.

So armed, you make your way to the hangar, and the waiting FTL-bird, actually the nickname for the new series of inter-system, FTL-capable shuttles. Lean and arrow-shaped, only slightly larger than some fighter craft, the inside of the shuttle is very spartan, just eight bare seats for passengers, some equipment lockers, and the cockpit. Everything else is taken up by the smallest FTL drive humans have ever built, and it will not get you very far or very fast. It's a little ridiculous to send one LT to a major naval base like this, but you commandeering a Supply Ship or small naval vessel like one of those short-range navy cutters would probably be even moreso. You climb up the rank, drop the soft-cases of your gear, hit the button to raise the ramp, then walk over and bang on the cockpit door to signal that you're ready to take off. You feel a lurch as the ship takes off, and eye the armor crate on the floor of the passenger compartment. Time to get dressed.

You open up the crate, and unbox the GEN 3 FAFNIR Power Armor. Originally, this was designed to be the next generation of armor for all branches of the Colonial Allied Forces, but since the First Contact War, the funds needed to equip every soldier have other places to be spent. Since the advent of the GEN 4 FAFNIR, made with reverse-engineered alien tech, for use with the Enhanced Operations Soldier projects, however, the SOD and other special forces units have been using the GEN 3 suits for their most dangerous operations. And since you're an extremely valuable Psionic, you are both trained and commonly equipped with this unit.

You slip out of your uniform pants and jacket, and into the armorweave body glove that is worn under the armor, then you begin the complex process of putting on the armor, which is made of an outer ablative layer, backed by composite plates made of the same material they armor spacecraft in. Normally, this requires a small team of technicians, but the SOD has trained you to put on the armor by yourself without too much delay. You snap the helmet in place, which completes the vacuum seal, and have the armor run a self-diagnostic while you strap or clip your various weapons and gear to the armor's hardpoints. It finishes just as a voice comes on over the intercom, "FTL jump calculated, FTL interdiction cleared, preparing to depart for New Concord. Take your seat, buddy, these things are built for speed, not smooth sailing." You climb into a seat, and strap yourself in as the shuttle jumps.

I have been known to go there from time to time. Just so you guys know, the HG58 is basically a space!P90, and the HG58SD is more like the Halo ODST SMG.

So, activity seems a little slowed, and I have shit to do, so I'm gonna take a break here, and we'll pick up briefing on the Shrike. You've been a great audience, I'll be here all week (No I wont).

I'll be hanging about if you're wanting to ask questions, and stuff, though.

Alright, see you later. I thought others were just waiting for updates like I was but I guess they went away

Oh...sorry, I was actually waiting, I was just playing WoW at the same time. Hit a couple BGs and Dungeons and lost track of time.

On another note, bump.
