As you approach the pyramid and climb the steps, you more easily see the 30 foot bronze statues. Alvaro suddenly realises that he recognises them, from a book he once read on the faiths of lost civilisations.
On the left is a man wearing a scale breastplate and a kilt. He has a stern bearded face, his body powerfully muscled. In his right hand he prepares to hurl a lightning bolt, while in his left he holds a balance. Alvaro recognises him as Gorm, the storm-god, who grants victory in war and punishment to the wicked.
In the middle is a young androgynous figure in robes. Its body is entwined with two snakes, and wings sprout from its back. The face is somewhat disturbing, a mix of childlike innocence and cold cunning. In its right hand it points a wand, and in its left it holds a small pile of coins (carved, not actual coins). This is Usamigaras, trickster-god, who taught man the secrets of healing and watches over messengers.
The one on the right is a beautiful woman, in a long dress with a helmet sitting atop her head. She too is warlike, but where the man is wrathful vengeance she is a stern defender. In her left hand is a sheaf of wheat and in her right a sword. This is Madarua, all-mother, who guides every life through birth and death, and brings on the changing seasons.

As you reach the top of the pyramid, you notice that there's a slab of stone jutting out to the left of the stairs, like a door held open by something.
>>
>>21736035
Alvaro relates all of this to the group.

Does the mask look like Usamigaras, Madarua, or like none of them?
>>
>>21736035
Jenai will respectfully touch Usamigaras' foot for luck if it's in reach, and then go investigate the stone slab.
>>
>>21736073
:-|
There is no god of loot and xp.

Otab uses his ink and quill to draw on the ground a crude pile of coins, and a stick figure on it with a smiley face.

Otab has completed the Pantheon.
Otab introduces to the group "Dosh", the god of Loot and XP.
Otab offers a small prayer to Dosh for guidance and protection.
>>
>>21736035
stone? stone. STOOOONEcunning

>gthsbc cat
Yes catcha, where is the cat?
>>
>>21736106
Should specify that Dosh is a small stick figure that easily fits in a 1' x 1' square.

Otab is now satisfied that the people of this ancient civilization are now living much richer afterlives, since there is now a suitable god for them to follow.

Otab feels proud.

"I'm sure 'Dosh' is wonderful god who will aid you in your endeavors."
>>
Alvaro, you realise now where you are. This is the lost city of Cynidicea. Centuries ago it was the capital of an empire which ruled this land, lead by the great King Alexander, who had this very pyramid built as his tomb. But something happened. A great evil, ancient and alien, was awakened by the workers. You only know rumours and legend, but tales of horrific sacrificial rites, men and women driven mad, and depraved attempts to stave off ennui through yet more bizzare pleasures are recorded. Eventually the city fades out of history, lost in the desert sands as upkeep of the aqueducts and canals that kept its land fertile was ignored

>>21736106
Usamigaras is pretty much. Note the coins and magic item.

"Surely whatever they awake is an evil and dark things indeed. May the sun bless us for having to withstand these evils..." Alvaro holds onto his silver holy symbol for a bit, before looking around for the cat. "Why did Boots lead us out here though? To go in? Why? Did his masters die in here, instead of the North?"
>>
>>21736156

Fuzzyboots gives you a look, like you're half right

>>21736210
Approaching, you see the door is held open by the dessicated corpse of a hobgoblin, with a crossbow bolt in its chest.
>>
>>21736237
"Thanks fer gettin' the door, mate." What's the inner door look like?
>>
>>21736219
"Actually about thirty, I would guess. Not sure about the hundred though... This is assuming they got the cat before leaving for the north though..."

>>21736237
"Well, whoever is still here doesn't want these monsters here." Alvaro gives the hob a disgusted look, shrugging. "I doubt they would still be alive in here, although if they were they would be old by now..."
>>
>>21736219
Fig'tard, Charm human.
Plus, you ever see an undead cat?
Finally, maybe these things just don't think cat is very tasty.

>>21736237
Fuzzyboots, careful! This is a holy site of Dosh! be sure to get as much loot and xp as you can. That goes for the rest of you [i.e. the party], too! Get lots of loot and xp.

>>21736237
I silently praise Dosh for this bounty of crossbow bolt.
>>
>>21736219
When you round the side of the pyramid, you'll notice two things. First, there is a pressure plate just inside the door, beneath the hobgoblin. Second, the door is weighted so that it will swing closed if not held open
>>
>>21736237
I investigate the corpse.

"We might not be alone fellows."
>>
>>21736272
It's stone. It opens inward, and similarly you think it naturally swings shut
>>
>>21736279
Oh good, let's not disturb our doorma...
>>21736278
Let's hope he doesn't slump over
>>
>>21736296
Geez I know. When I was coming here there were 7 people, 4 dogs and a cat with me.

>>21736279
Hm. So we'll need to open the door and keep something on the pressure plate.
I'll press my 10ft to the pressure plate and hold it I suppose.
>>
>>21736296
Everything of value has already been looted from the body. As you look inside, you see several footprints heading down the passage. At the far end is an unloaded heavy crossbow. Apparently nobody's been resetting the traps here for weeks
>>
>>21736308
"Fig, you have anything that can wedge the door open?" Alvaro looks for something heavy to put on the pressure plate. Loose rock, whatever.
>>
>>21736335
I wedge it open with the hobgoblin?

If not, a piton will do
>>
>>21736314
As you press on the plate, Fig'tard sees the crossbow's nut drop
>>
>>21736355
Good thing I was using the 10 foot pole! That invisible crossbow bolt barely missed me.
>>
>>21736350
A piton is easily strong enough to hold the door open
>>
>>21736350
Just worried something might remove the hobgoblin corpse. Like a hungry scavenger.

Alvaro lights his lantern.
>>
>>21736355
I snag the heavy crossbow, deftly hopping over the pressure plate.

"Tsk tsk Otab. Learn patience, or you're going to have to learn it posthumously. That hob will probably prop the door open fairly well. Shall we steel spike this next door and continue down?"

This 40 foot room is dominated by three bronze tubes, reaching up to the ceiling and down through the floor. Each has a door, with a bronze handle to pull it open. The one in the middle has spatters of blood around it
Gurx looks panicked, and yells out "GAS!", pointing out four holes in the corners of the room

>>21736409
It's hard to tell in the desert, but he's been dead for at least a few weeks.
>>
>>21736445
A) Do we smell anything?
B) How old is the blood spatter? Pretty dried?
>>
>>21736466
Just an old dusty smell. But if you're quiet, now it's been pointed out you can hear a faint hissing sound
>>
>>21736466
It's dry and brown
>>
>>21736434
Well, this time I suppose I wait for the party to round the corner.
I attempt to get my dogs the scent of the crossbow.
I wave some food rations in front of them
"Food."
I pet them.
"Good."
I then get them to inspect the heavy crossbow.
"Trap."
The dogs don't seem to understand/care.

>>21736445
Obviously we need to find some way to open all the doors simultaneously. I inform the party of this.

>>21736483
Hiss? Probably gas. How the bloody fuck do...

I walk back and un-prop the pressure plate we propped open. I make sure to NOT MESS WITH THE DOOR AT ALL.
>>
>>21736483
Right, I'll not be entering the room yet until that plate is unpopped
>>
>>21736511
That doesn't seem to do anything.

Though despite the warning, and the clear fact that gas of some sort is entering the room, you don't feel any ill effects.
>>
>>21736483
"There aren't any corpses around here... It may not be a deadly gas, but could still be dangerous all the same. It could be air coming up from the lower floors of the pyramid..." Alvaro offers to the group, unsure as to the harm of the gas. "We could try plugging them up..." What is Boots doing in all of this, and is the cat following us in here? The cat is small, so it should affect it faster.
>>
>>21736534
>>21736540
"you don't feel any ill effects" is worst effects.
>>
>>21736445
"This looks - like death. Cat, what do you think?"
>>
>>21736540
Boots is standing by the door inner door. He doesn't seem to be in bad shape either, but like you is being cautious, realising the gay might still be dangerous.
While you're waiting and thinking, the flow of gas apparently stops.
>>
>>21736540
"What 'ave we got to plug 'em up with? 'obgoblin fingers?"
It's morbid, but effective maybe.
>>
>>21736590
"Definitely gas. Might take a while for it to affect us... Should we wait for it to clear out before entering, or just go?"
>>
>>21736540
Well, if we don't know what it does and there's no obvious way to stop it, then ... Damn.

>realising the gay might still be dangerous

>>
>>21736669

"Up? I thought we were at the top.. I think up is first, then down."
>>
>>21736669
Right. I've got a confession from the cat.

>>21736669
What say we open door #left and #right, as well?
>>
>>21736690
I agree with Jenai.

First, I throw a pebble down the tube. Roughly how far down does it clatter/how far down does the tube go?
>>
>>21736690
Pulling open the right hand door causes a pit to open in front of the door, and opening the left door causes a barrage of darts to shoot from holes in the west wall, bouncing harmlessly from the east wall with nobody in the way.
>>
>>21736711
Twenty feet or so
>>
>>21736669
Alvaro prays in his down time, as usual.

[Sorry I was gone for a bit, needed to do something real quick. Back now.]

>>21736714
"Well, we best be careful in this place..."
>>
>>21736714
Is it possible to repeatedly open and close the right hand door from out of its line of fire?
If so, I do that until the trap's out of ammo.
If not, I don't do that since it cannot be done.

I wish to look in the pit. Is this doable?
>>
>>21736746
Otab tells the group that maybe this pit is a death trap.
And someone carrying Loot might have died in it.
Otab looks down the pit.
>>
>>21736746
Pushing it shut with a ten foot pole then re-opening it with the grapnel, there aren't any more darts fired.
Down in the pit, as well as from the tubes if anyone looks, there is a red glow
>>
>>21736762
"Well... We could lower someone down with some rope." Alvaro offers, looking into the pit. "I don't much want to be the one lowered though..."
>>
>>21736762
I have my lantern on, it's only 20ft, and all there is is a "red glow"?
No loot?
Oh well.
I praise Dosh for the bounty of darts.

Well, I'd say Up.
I'll climb one tube, who's getting the other two?
Dogs will have to stay here though.
>>
>>21736714
Jenai will suggest fig wedge those two doors open, then head to the center door, and begin ascending the stairs - up.
>>
>>21736790
Using your lantern, I guess you see that down there are three large beetles, with glowing red stones on thear heads.

Climbing the tube, you find yourself inside a statue. There are levers and pulleys all around, and in front of you is a four inch wide tube
>>
>>21736818
If animate:

"I see beetles down there. Red stones on their heads."

If inanimate:

"There's some beetle statues down there. Red stones on their heads."

[OOC: Fire beetle]
>>
>>21736818
Are these beetles the same as in the Cavern's of Quasqueton Library.

Also, is the cat pointing at a certain tube, or waiting for us to decide?
>>
>>21736818
"Hm. Standard wargolem. "

Jenai makes note of everything, touches nothing for now.

"Let's return to this part in a moment. It's a dead end - let's make sure everything else is done, then we can go back in there."

Jenai prepares to shoot the beetles if they appear to be the sort that could kill you.

THEN I look in the tube.

I'm thinking this is just one of the statues we saw outside.

Casts Protection from Evil on Fig. "May the sun protect you in this dark place, and may it ward off all darkness." He then shuts off his lantern and readies his Fire Beetle Lantern.

"I'm fine with whatever door, just be careful for traps."

The rule is pretty simple. Monster corpse: Do whatever the hell you want, pose it in embarrassing positions if you like. Human/Elf/Halfling/Dwarf corpse: Leave alone and bury later unless evil, in which case just be sort of respectful. The cat is, while intelligent, a cat. So you can't really reprehend it for wanting to eat a person, it doesn't know better.

There are three sets of bunk beds in this room, and five men are here relaxing and talking. They wear chainmail over blue tunic, and steel helmets with golden masks. "Greetings Kanadius." Alvaro gives a bow to the man in the helmet. He still has his war mask on, although he doubts they would attack now.
>>
Could watcher perhaps make a character?
>>
>>21738649
"Greetings, Lord of Cynidicea. We come to this place, guided by the boon-companion of storied Rogahn." A gesture at the cat. "We hear that a great evil has permeated this place. I, for my part, offer my respects to you - and would like to hear more about the situation, that we may decide how best to proceed."
>>

Roll 18d6 son.

His pale blue eyes fix you with a gaze difficult to place beneath the mask. "You are half-lost already," he says sadly. "We worship him through each action we take to save our city. Our lives are a constant act of devotion. He is marked on our souls as on our bodies." He pulls up his right sleeve, showing a blue lightning bolt tattoo. "But beyond that? Each thunder-day we offer homage to Gorm, and we celebrate when he blesses our world with his lightning. Justice means that those who are good to others shall never know fear, and those who are bad to others shall know fear until they repent. Honour means that thought, word, and deed are all as one. And Strength means the ability to make yourself the man you know you should be, and make the world what you know it ought to be."

Guys I think he's Lawful
>>
>>21738757
Well, my thought, word, and deed are as one.
I'm on the road to being the man I should be.
I'm on the road to making the world what it ought to be.
Not so good on the Justice thing, but 2 out of 3 ain't bad.
So, do you have any paid work for someone who can fight things then take all their shiny stuff? I'm totally up for saving your city if I get to fight things and have shiny stuff.
>>
>>21738757
;_; I IRL worship Grom now, DM.
>>
>>21738757
"Strong, wise words." Alvaro said, smiling although you can't see it behind the mask. "Something to strive for, indeed. You seem to all be honorable people, that much is plan to me. But what can you tell me about these 'Lost ones'? I've heard that a dark evil infected this place..."
>>
>>21738826
I feel kinda the same way.
>>
>>21738824
Also, Otab is starting to think that maybe these guys aren't Loot and Xp.
Maybe they're ... ALLIES in getting Loot and Xp?
Otab is cool with this.

>>21738826
>>21738849
Psh. IRL I'm Neutral Evil as fuck. If there is a god of sitting on your ass and browsing the internet, I worship that god.
>>

"Ah yes. I knew him as a younger man. He was one of the greatest men I have ever known. Though you are a thief, and have much you need to atone for, I see that beneath your heart is pure, and that you may do much to help our city.
"There are two sides to this city, each divided into three factions. On the side of the Gods are we, the Brotherhood of Grom, the Magi of Usamigaras, and the Warrior Maidens of Madarua. We want to save this city, and make Cynidicea what it once was. The Magi are ruled by Zelligar the unliving, and his vizir Auriga Sirkinos. They seem good, but in truth care more for their own power and glory than the wellbeing of Cynidicea. The Warrior-Maidens are lead by Pandora. She should be a good ally to us, but she is a madwoman who delights in bloodshed.
"As for the side of the Dark One, there are the Priests, the Lost Ones, and the Goblins. The Priests and Lost Ones are all mad, but while the Lost Ones have had their minds destroyed, leaving nothing but animals, the Priests have had their minds corrupted, leaving nothing but evil. We need to save the Lost Ones from their degraded state. I do not know if the Priests can be saved, but I pray to Gorm that it may be so. The Goblins dwell down their, aiding the priests to save their own hides from the Dark One's hunger. Should we be victorious, doubtless they would seek to serve us instead, or if they thought they could turn against us and take the Undercity for themselves"
>>
>>21738873
*hiss* He worships the Jobs!
>>
>>21738834
"The Lost Ones were like us, once. When the Dark One came, and Cynidicea began to decay, they ate of the Lotus. Each bite they took consumed more of their minds, until they became half dreamers and half beast, unable to react to reality with anything but base instinct if that."
>>
>>21738907
And what of Dosh? What of those who walk the path of Loot and Xp, in whatever form that Loot and Xp may take?
It seems all you people value Xp in your own way.
but, what of Loot?
What of the gold? the treasure? the magic items? the people? and all other things that can be sold?
Surely I cannot be the only one in this entire city that finds value in loot.
>>
>>21738907
Shit, did Jenai forget to put away the "I AM A THIEF" placard?

>>21738907
Jenai taps a finger to the pith helmet, then removes it with a flourish.

"What course of action do you see as being the most beneficial to the cause of freeing Cynidicea? The overthrow of the Priests, the rescue of the lost ones, and securing the service of the goblin folk? Do you believe we can make common cause with the Magi and the Warrior-Maidens?
>>
>>21738980
"If money is your object, then perhaps you belong with the Magi. They are spellcasters, like you, and they seek power and wealth, like you."
>>
>>21738907
Alvaro "hmed" at the goblins comment. "Typical for such vile things." He commented, forgetting about the goblins in their party. "While I have no quarrel in the divisions between the three gods here, I do have it with the darkness. It is my sun-given duty to aid all those who need it against the fight of such evil."
>>
>>21739002
"The only thing that could truly free us is the destruction of the Dark One. I think that overthrowing the priests would help starve the thing, making it weak enough to one day be defeated. But the Magi claimed Zelligar destroyed the Dark One, and truly believed it, yet still he rules from the deep. It is comforting to think Zelligar is his puppet and has simply lied, but if he is not, if he did kill the Dark One...I don't know."

Could there be 2 Dark Ones?
Like, maybe you killed one, then a second one showed up.

There have been times when I killed one of something, and then a second one showed up. In fact just earlier today, I was fighting a Lizard, and then this other Lizard drops in behind me!

Maybe it was like that, but with Dark Ones instead of Lizards.
>>
>>21739078
"Do you think it will be safe to speak to the Magi of a union to overthrow the Dark One? If they demand some proof of the Dark One - well, what proof do you have it exists still? Is the Dark One a - demon?"

[OOC] DM, as I said on the Google Doc, I am afraid I must be going soon, for reals they are closing the bar. On an aside type note, maybe Watcher can join as a member of one of the local groups! It would be HILARIOUS. Also, plotpropriate. What time tomorrow do you think you'll run again, if you do?

I should be able to run tomorrow, but starting in the afternoon (morning for me, like 2 to 4 pm for you guys)

And I was thinking that, or he/she shows up after being lost in the desert.

IC:
"Before we rest for the night, I've got Sleep prepared. What say we find just anything, I cast sleep on it for easy win, and THEN we rest?"
>>

Bah, stats don't mean much. They don't make you cast harder, or anything, just that you know a few more languages. Seriously, that's all intelligence does. Dex, you both have the same bonus, so not much of a difference.

>>21739193
Alvaro nods at the man. "We shall take heed, thank you for the warning. I wish you all well in your endeavors. Oh, I believe this is yours." Alvaro pulls the balance holy symbol from his belt and hands it over to Kanadius.
>>
>>21739271
"Yes, that is an icon holy to Gorm. I thank you"

She will be called Jie (Jee ay)

I will buy a Longbow/Quiver/Arrow set. Some scale Mail. a Short Sword. And a backpack filled with Flint/steel, 2 hammers, 2 waterskins, hempen rope, 5 flasks of oil and a blanket. Maybe a little more or I will just hold onto my remaining 9 gold. Is that cool?

Charm Person and Read Languages. So, you can charm someone to help you in a fight, powerful. You'll learn Otab's sleep, and Otab will learn your... Charm Person.

Oh yeah, ought to divvy up the treasure now, right? Or at least have someone buy the treasures off the party and divide the cash?
>>

><; Technically a solution

>>21739490
We only got 108gp of stuff tho. Plus whatever I find while arsing about finding something to sleep. Hopefully I don't open one of these doors and it's dragons.
>>
>>21739490
Total value of treasure is 135gp
Anyone willing to spend 135gp for the cup, two masks, a crossbow, and some darts for the good of the party?
>>
>>21739490
Sounds good to me. I think we just found some masks though, can't remember if we found anything else.

Would be best though, since some people are leaving and we're gaining another.
>>
>>21739517
Yeah. So who wants to get them? The cup, crossbow, and darts don't do much, but the masks are going to be really useful since you're seemingly entering a society entirely populated by mask wearers
>>
>>21739515
Can always just stash it and sell it at town. later.
By my count we had 4 PCs and 4 retainers, so that's 22.5gp per person?
I'll pay 2.5gp and take the xbow I guess, sell it later for my 22.5xp.
>>
>>21739540
Yep. You get the 23XP anyway though, even though you havn't actually sold it. Or rather, sold it to yourself
>>
>>21739536
>Already has a mask
I knew that war mask was a good idea. Good 'ole metal sun stylized war mask. You never get me wrong.

I'm saving up for that delicious gold holy symbol that I will eventually make into a miniature sun though, so yeah.
>>
>>21739564
Masks are good for your retainers though.
>>
>>21739582
Or you can lend it out to other party members, just making sure you end up getting your money back for it. I'd just really appreciate it if you or Otab bought them
>>
>>21739555
Otab mourns his SLEEP spell slot. Mourns the shit out of it. Wishes there was a big red blinking "LAST COMBAT ENCOUNTER" warning.
>>
>>21739582
Hm... Point. Alright, I'll buy the two masks. How much are they? I'll let my retainers decide, Mr. Stoic Dervish McDeath, and Demon Lover-boy.
>>
>>21739593
If I buy the mask do I get my combat encounter?
>>
>>21739599
105gp. Or rather you'd spend 82.5gp on them, since you're owed 22.5gp anyway.
Plus, get 23XP
>>
>>21739615
Done, spending. I'm guessing Brandon will want the cheap copper one for the possible love god connection. Doubt Ileen cares much.
>>
