You are Jenny Williams, owner of the persona Bellerophon. Based on a desperate phone call from your spirit world contact (the weird, bug-eating Renfield) you entered the world of the Midnight Shift to track down its latest victim. A half hour of wandering the bloodsoaked hallways of the nightmare office park later, you found him.

That would be James Russell, laying in a semi-comatose state on the floor. His Shadow, an atomic model roughly in the shape of a stick figure man, is screaming fire at the ceiling and charging you.

Is this at all related to the Persona Quest from not all that long ago where the MC had Cthugha? I honestly do not remember that questrunner's name.

The Shadow seems to be winding up for some sort of crazy fire attack, if you're any judge of screaming shadow-monsters bellowing fire and charging up. "Bellerophon! Wind!" you shout. Your persona - some sort of badass space pirate, as near as you can tell - appears and slashes the air. A hurricane-strength gust of wind tumbles the shadow head over heals to the floor, spewing his fire harmlessly away from you.

You decide to try pressing the advantage. Every time you summon Bellerophon it drains something from you - physically, mentally, you're not really sure, but it exhausts you. You probably only have two or three uses of it left.

The Shadow is regaining his feet. Seems to be turning to you, as near as you can tell with something that has no face.

>pistol and saber

The light of the fire gleams in the old-school pirate saber you bought off of eBay as you bring it crashing down onto the Shadow's head. The atom that makes up its skull cracks a little. Determined, you swing again and again as it struggles to get up. The cracks are growing wider.

Applying scientific laws in combat. Using Heisenburg's uncertainty principle so that the enemys no longer know where they are, or so they have no control over their speed. Crushing them with gravity. Turning some of their mass into energy and watching the explosions.

"Dance for me!" you shout. It cocks its head at you, confused. That kinda ruins the momet for you.

"Hell with it. Short Fuse!" you say as you squeeze the trigger. The gun kicks in your hand. Saying attack names still feels cool. That's kind of a relief.

Despite firing an ordinary-sized piece of lead, it hits with a cannonball impact. You don't quite understand why, but it's Space Pirate Magic or something. You don't have to explain shit.

The Shadow claws at its shattered head while it explodes. A miniature mushroom cloud, perfectly to scale, explodes maybe ten, twenty feet above it. The blast feels warm against your face. It feels nice, actually, most of the Midnight Shift feels like you're walking through a freezer.

On the ground the guy you came chasing begins stirring. Looks like destroying the Shadow returned its power to him or something? You're not sure. In all the stories of Personas you've looked up the process for gaining one and controlling it differed from incident to incident. Hopefully killing his Shadow didn't lobotomize him or something.

You are James Russell. You work in a shitty call center for terrible pay while waiting for someone to accept you into a graduate program. Or at least you did, the you became host to some sort of runaway anger spirit and lapsed into a sadness coma.

It's been a long day.

You feel a rush of heat as energy seeps back into you. Before you know it some woman with pirate weapons is at your side, shaking you awake.

You sit up, a little slowly and weakly, but still on your own.

"Happergfngh," you say with all the confidence you can muster.

"Aw christ, I scrambled your brains," the pirate says. Apart from her weapons and a slightly gaudy taste in jewelry, actually, she's mostly dressed in sensible office attire.

"No, a'm fine, just tired," you say. "That monster thing did something to me."

"Drained you. Your emotions, your intensity, all that. Usually a shadow is just your darkness personified, but if they're strong enough they'll try to start stealing energy from you directly," she says. "Or at least that's what the creepy bastard tells me."

"Renfield?" you ask.

"Yeah. He eat a bug when he met you?"

"I hope it was a bug," you say.

"Can you stand?" she asks. She offers you a hand while you come to your feet. You're shaky - like you just drained half a bottle of whiskey by yourself shaky - but you can stand. You don't feel that overwhelming anger anymore, that helps.

"I'm Jenny Williams."

"What, like the song?" you ask.

"What song?"

"Pirate Jenny."

"Never heard of it," she says. "The Shadows are going to go berserk when they see you now. You know anything about how to fight?"

"Anubis!" you shout.

Your body feels heavy suddenly. It's like the feeling you get when sprinting all-out - losing energy faster than you can replenish it. When you open your eyes that...thing, whatever it is, is there again. An atomic structure, shifting. Vaguely human, if you squint just right.

"Hah. Anubis? I am become Death? All that?" you ask.

I AM THOU

AND THOU ART I

it says. Or you think it does. The words ring in your mind.

"I think I understand," you say. You extend a had. "Let's get out there and do some science." The Persona reforms into a vaguely human shape and reaches a hand to you before disappearing in a haze of blue light.

You feel like you just sprinted non-stop for the duration of his appearance.

"It's a drain having it out," Jenny says. "Summon it for an attack and then let it fade, that's the only way to use it without killing yourself." She raises her cutlass. "Anything you need to ask or take care of before we try to get out of here?"

Simple, selling the rare weapons and items we don't want which we find in treasure chests during the shadow hour, if I learned anything from the persona games.

You make your way down the stairs, Jenny in the lead, you following a few feet behind. You try putting your fists up but it just feels silly.

The shadows hiss and screech, lumps of darkness skittering away from one corner to the next. Not logical or scientific, strictly speaking, but you're just going to have to get used to a certain amount of wizard shit or whatever is causing this.

You make it back to your general desk area by following the footsteps seared into the carpet by your last passing. The fields of cubicles seem to stretch forever, barring some walls made by overturned piles of chairs and computers. You could climb over them, theoretically, but it does't seem like a great idea.

"So what's out there?" you ask.

"Whatever people think of the place they work, I guess," Jenny says. She fires a shot into the darkness, trying to scare something away. "There don't seem to be many concrete rules. Not yet at least."

"Huh," you think. You're passing your supervisor's office now. "Mind if I make a detour?"

"Go ahead," she says. "I'll watch the door, look around as long as you like."

You slip into your supervisor's office, flicking the lights on. No shadow monsters here, instead the lights burn so brightly it hurts a little. Maybe there will be something useful, something you can hold over her head...

Her chair is what stops you from searching further. It's the same faux-leather office chair you've seen a thousand times before, only covered in spikes like an iron maiden. Chains wrap around the chair, connected to the walls and the desk. Anyone sitting there was stuck.

You move closer, trying to see the desk. A computer (off), an appointment calender (every date scribbled in black pen. On closer inspection it's not scribbling, it's the word TRAPPED written over and over and over until it looks like a meaningless scrawl), and that photo of her kids. You've seen it a thousand times before, but in this one the kids look...different. Hungry. You get an uneasy sense looking at them. Bloodsucking, you think. They look like bloodsucking little mosquitos that just take and take and...

You shake your head, trying to snap yourself out of it. A moment later you're back in the hallway.

"Find what you're looking for?" she asks.

"This place is based on the thoughts of the people in it?"

"I think. Renfield is vague. I don't think he's actually very good at his job."

>>
"I should look for my desk," you say.

"I'm not a hundred percent sure you've thought this through," Jenny says. "Maybe come back tomorrow night when you haven't already been nearly murdered."

"I've gotta see this," you say. "It's gonna bother me if I don't go now."

"That's...argh, fine. You're going to look and then we're going to leave immediately. Don't touch anything!"

You walk into the hall of desks slowly, senses alert for more of the shadows. Jenny takes an occasional swing at the darkness, but for the most part they seem to be leaving you be. Waiting.

Not far from the main path - a few cubicles over, actually - you find yours. The only one with the monitor still on.

The desk is...mostly a desk. The message light on your monitor is scrolling something - a series of excuses you have in mind in case anyone asks about your shitty job. THE ECONOMY IS BAD. CAN'T DO ENOUGH WITH AN UNDERGRAD DEGREE. WEIGHING MY OPTIONS.

Nobody's ever asked why you're in this job. that's almost worse.

"Kinda thought there'd be something scarier," you mutter to yourself. The headset on your desk is blaring something. Static? You lift the headset to your ears to see.

It's your own voice muttering to itself over and over. "Stuck in this fucking hellhole forever," it mutters, "spent five years on a degree I wouldn't even wipe my ass on, gonna wind up like that dead-eyed fuck in the next cubicle who's been here since the 90s, gonna fucking..."

You try taking the headset off. The wire tangles itself around your arm, around your neck, growing tighter the more you struggle.

You were always kind of certain it would end this way.

"Help! HELP!" you shout. Jenny's there in a flash, cutlass at the ready.

"Cut the cord!" you say.

"STOP SQUIRMING," she says. "I don't want to slice your throat open.

The cord is tightening. You're losing air quickly.

>>
"Anubis!" you manage to shout with the last of your breath.

Your Persona arrives with an earsplitting howl and blasts fire in your direction. You squeeze your eyes shut as the fire washes over you, Jenny diving out of the way. It feels...warm? Kinda nice, actually. You open them again to find the wires you were tangled up in melted.

"I guess I'm fire resistant," you say.

"Wonderful. Maybe next time think about the fact I'm not," Jenny says, coming back to her feet. "Anyway, looks like you woke them up.

One by one monitors are flickering to life. Shadows are crawling onto the desks, into the computers, onto the chairs, causing them to jerk around like a bad stop-motion effect.

"We're fighting evil cubicle shit?"

"Apparently the Japanese kids kept fighting evil school supplies. I don't make up the rules, this shit just happens," Jenny says. She raises her cutlass and pistol as you bundle your hands into awkward fists. "Alright, time to level grind a bit."

I was actually originally going to make the main character gay to preemptively minimize waifu-ing, then I realized it would probably just replace it with husbando-ing from a slightly different audience.

If it ever does come up I'll just go with whatever the community decides. James doesn't have teenage hormones, so there's no guarantee he'll take a break from supernatural monster hunting and mystery solving to chat up girls as much as someone in full raging teenage mode will. On the other hand, Social Links. I dunno, probably just gonna wing it.
>>
>>21779815
I read that as full raping teenage mode.
What the fuck, brain?

Also, more on subject, I'd prefer not being gay, but w/e I can live with anything. It's more a matter of personal preference than anything.
>>
>>21779815
hey op

what do you feel as

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mdztlw8HQm1rgits1o1_r1_400.jpg

for any character in general's persona?
>>
>>21779855

Probably the same for the majority of /tg/. I'll just find some other way to keep the quest from devolving into an attempt to date every single girl we encounter. If it does turn into that, then I guess we just roll with that.

>>21779875

Looks kinda cool, though most of the Personas are going to go through the community at the time of their introduction. If that dude wins I'd be open to it, though. What's it from? It looks familiar, but I can't place it.

Not really, no. Keep meaning to check out one of the /tg/ related ones but I never have the time.
