THE REICH-EN-ING BEGINS!
>Part I: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/21731140/
>Part II: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/21740644/

You are Oberst Hans Landa, a Combat Engineer with the Third Reich who has an extensive knowledge of civil engineering. An asset to the Reich, which is what landed you a promotion to Oberst for this secret operation.

You have traveled, via magical means, to an unknown world. A world that you suspect holds much more dark and powerful secrets than even your superiors could have ever hoped for. You have brought with you a small army, and have settled in and fortified a location near your arrival point on your first day, with a small foray. One that you shall find the results of shortly...

September 5th, 1939. 4:56 AM local time. Location Unknown.

We reopen with Gunther and his force having returned back to base, accompanied by a pair of Blitzes laden with books, booze, and a smattering of ancient weaponry from the Manor. Oh, and corpses. Lots and lots of corpses.

You'd be willing to congratulate him and his men, too, if it wasn't for the fact that they'd scalped almost every monster present on the way back.

There was also the casualty and the minor injury, but at least there weren't any fatalities. As the headlights go quiet on the dark, fortified campsite, you're able to fully appreciate the fact that you just got woken up from a six hour sleeping shift to the psychotic grin of Gunther and his equally pleased men.

Dr. Klein, similarly roused, arrives with a tin of coffee in one hand as the injured commando, Lothar, is hurried off to your triage tent. Not exactly a proper operating room, but you'll do your best with what you have.

Daybreak should be in a couple of hours, the eerie twin moons beginning to set at long last.

The convoy itself also has a few rescued civilians from the unfamiliar Manor up north, in addition to one crate that appears to carry exotic pieces of glassware in it, as well as a second sealed one with a very interesting mark on it. One you recognize from the Gate that allowed you to first travel here.

So, Oberst Hans Landa, how do you begin your new day?

You flag Gunther down as his wounded man is carted off, the poor bastard having apparently taken a spear through the leg. Didn't seem too serious, though the man was clearly a bit out of it on morphine.

"Good work, Hinden." You say, folding your hands behind your back. You suspect a pat on the back would send the trained killer into a fit of gory murder, so that's good enough for congratulations.

"Thanks, Oberst." He just grumbles back. Seems he still doesn't like you all that much, but at least he doesn't seem inclined to pop your head off like a cork anymore.

As Gunther and his men get to offloading the looted items, you have one of the Wehrmacht on patrol fetch the two brightest minds on-base: Gabriella and Dr. Buren.

Both women arrive more-or-less at the same time, the former currently dressed in a hastily donned pair of pants and button-up shirt. The latter, seemingly having stayed up all night, was dressed in a clean labcoat and still had a pair of rubber gloves on.
>>
>>21781508

Gabriella: "... Humans?" She mentions, going a bit wide-eyed as she looks from the rather terrified-looking 'rescue-ees' to the dead bodies of the lizard-things. They're ugly bastards, that's for sure. "... Mein gott! These things don't look like any wildlife I've ever seen before." She comments.
Dr. Buren: "Because they aren't, my dear. These things are untermensch-- inferior creatures. The fact that they died in such numbers to a smaller force proves it." The woman comments, before looking to the people, "... But yes, humans, or so it appears." She remarks, before looking to you.

Dr. Buren: "Do I have your permission to interrogate the prisoners?" She inquires, looking from the four locals to the bound-and-gagged (and injured) lizard-thing that Gunther and his men captured.
Gabriella: "Interrogate? They're people! We should be welcoming them, trying to find common ground, not trying to crack their heads open."
Dr. Buren: "... We are in a future warzone, Doctor. May I remind you of the fact that we are a -military- expedition? The niceties of diplomacy can wait."

Great. An argument.

>>21781475
A Command Post [Basic] is a building with basic wooden walls and windows. Whereas a Command Tent is open to sniper fire and allows almost anyone to enter and leave as they please, a Basic Command Post is a wooden structure with designated sleeping areas for the command staff, as well as a proper radio bank for broadcasting/receiving purposes. It is also fairly resilient to small arms fire, but still vulnerable to heavy munitions, aerial assault, or anything much heavier than a handgun.
>>
>>21781556
"The lizard man can be interrogated but the humans, from what I hear, were peaceful and cooperating, even seemed like the warrior helped in the fight. Lets not strain relations with those who could prove to be valuable allies in the future.
Try to find some common language with them so that we can ask questions about this world and its mysteries."
>>
>>21781556
"Doctor Buren, we must do what we can to understand this world. These people are natives to this land and know the ins and outs of it and the surrounding areas. By cooperating with them, it fosters friendly relations with other people in the area. As it is it appears that there already is a hostile force in this area, in the form of those lizard creatures."

Also, get that prisoner bandaged, and the locals feed.
>>
>>21781556
After we deal with this, the three of us should inspect the sealed box and the literature. Though we are unlikely to be able to translate the books right this second, if they're illuminated, their pictures should provide some insight.
>>
>>21781556
Have we actually officially debriefed Gunther and his men yet? Perhaps that should wait . .

Considering the nature of everything going on, Dr. Buren takes your comment in stride, "Very well." She says, sounding almost disappointed at the idea that she couldn't perform a proper interrogation of your new 'guests'. "I shall treat them with... Kid gloves, as it were."

Considering the fact that you haven't had anything to eat either, it might not be a bad idea to get some coffee and food to start the day. The mess hall should be running well enough to get some basic food at least, though the engineers will probably still be at work for ages to come. Or, at least, for the next six hours until your command post is built.

Gabriella smiles at your agreement with her, herding the three locals off, but the swordsman seems to hang behind for a bit. He points to the wagon that one of the Blitzes towed back, in particular, the crate with the odd symbol on it. He seems rather emphatic about it, pointing from the box to you. The two scientists stare oddly at him before looking to the other three, attempting a few phrases in different languages.

Linguistics was never your strong point, but the natives seem a bit spooked at the excited stream of phrases coming out of the two women.

Still, the books are being unloaded by a pair of Wehrmacht soldiers from the returning patrol, sorting them into neat piles on the ground. Gabriella ceases her linguistic efforts to hurry over to them, seemingly enchanted at the idea of otherworldly literature.

"If only I had a proper laboratory to work out of." The woman remarks, "... And coffee."
>>
How about we interrogate the radio lady.

With our penis.
>>
Also give Gunther the ok for lizard critter extermination. They are hostile to the local humans and threaten us from the forrest and given Gunther's claim as to the skill of the traps are probably also skilled at stealth. So kill em all.

Of course we want Gunther to scout their settlement/camp get a decent idea of their numbers. If they are few enough leave the matter to Gunther, if his squad is insufficient we should prepare for our first battle
>>
Give Gabriella le dick
>>
>>21781804
Gunther and his men would give a fairly straightforward recounting of the events that took place. Minus, of course, Gunther's personal experience as to just how he knew where the lizard-monsters were.

A rather bland tale, truth be told, excepting the parts of violence, the locked weapon locker that they had to leave behind, and rescuing a man mid-execution. But that's soldier stuff-- what's so cool about that compared to developing a complex system of agricultural infrastructure and irrigation?
>>21781805
The lizard thing remains are taken off to the laboratory on a pair of gurneys, the larger ones requiring additional trips, though several fit onto the gurneys when properly stacked with absolutely no sense of reverence whatsoever.

The remains are shipped off to the triage tent for storage in the ground-cooled underground storage area for later dissection by the doctors.

As you debate between Gabriella and Gretta's finer features (they're twins, so really, they both have pretty fine features), you're left to realize that the base isn't even all that well set up yet. Where would you go to romance either of them? A lovely stroll through the forests full of lizard-monster things? Take a waltz up to the ruined village up north and see the sights of heads mounted on pikes? Even your nerdy self knows that'd be a total moodkill.

>Cutting western killzone order added
>ETA: 4 days

Fortifications currently available:
>[ ] Machine Gun Nests [Basic]
>ETA: 3 Days. Foxholes are upgraded into wooden pillboxes, complete with firing slits for not only machine gunners but additional infantry to take cover in.
>[ ] Basic Trench
>ETA: 7 Days. A chest-height trench dug into the ground, able to provide cover for infantry to duck behind, as well as providing a natural grenade sump.
>[ ] Fortified Trench.
>ETA: 10 Days. As above, but reinforced with wooden beams and purpose-built cubby holes for the troops to hide in.
>[ ] Wooden Pallisade
>ETA: 20 Days. A wall of raised logs with catwalks behind them, encircling the encampment. Immobile, but highly defensible in most cases.
>Other ideas welcome.

Additionally, the swordsman-- with one of the Wehrmacht as escort-- hurries over to the crate. Once there, he attempts to draw his sword, looking to use it as a prybar.

Gabriella speaks up, "The box has the symbol for 'Details' engraved upon it. A minor rune of Fregna, the rune of learning. It... May not be entirely harmful, sir."
>>
>>21781884
Gunther seems to smile at the suggestion, but looks a bit wary as well, "I'm down a man for now, but we're still an effective fighting unit. We can resupply and head out on foot-- you want us to go loud if we find the main encampment, or just try to take them out quietly?" He thinks for a moment, "We can just scout them out, too, but I doubt they'll all be at their main camp, even this early in the morning."
>>
>>21781897

it is now time to do CIVIL ENGINEERING!!!
basicly, we need to plan out a efficient layout for fixed concrete structures so that our main operations can progress unhindered from any pathetic attemts of attack from the clearly inferior infestation of sub-forms.
>>

>Gunther seems to smile at the suggestion, but looks a bit wary as well, "I'm down a man for now, but we're still an effective fighting unit. He thinks for a moment, "We can just scout them out, too, but I doubt they'll all be at their main camp, even this early in the morning."

Try to do it quietly, if that seem too impractical focus on scouting and radio back and I will send some reinforcements. Dont want to lose anyone if a little extra manpower will prevent it.
>>
>>21782195

"i am willing to give you operational leeway in how you deal with the enemy camps. the only thing i must impose upon you though is to try not to draw too much attention to our base. at least untill we have sufficient defences in place."
>>

Pillboxes sound the best upgrade for the time we haev to wait, Machine gun nests has my vote.
>>
>>21782145
For defences, lets try the old roman setup of trench and palisaide what with the primative weapons of the natives it seems like a good choice.

Start with a ditch(make sure we leave extra room for expansion)
make a palisade and use the ditch dirt to reinforce the wall whish should both strengthen the wall and speed up it's construction a bit

make sure we add a tower or two for sharp shooters
>>
>>21782145
as for the box, wave the knight/whatever back and have someone with the proper tools open it. Mabey a hack saw to cut through the lock? whatever, we just dont want the fellow with the sword to break whatever is in the box
>>
>>21782195
We leave it to his discretion - if he thinks it's better to take the camp down quietly and then kill the returning patrols/scouts/foragers as they arrive, do so. Conversely, if he judges it necessary to go Blitzkrieg on their asses, he may.

Seriously, he will be the one carrying the operation out, he will be the one with all the intel, he will be there on site, so why is he asking us?

Sure, it would be better if nobody knew we were here, but that can be accomplished by leaving no survivors as well.
>>
>>21782285
"I'd prefer it to be scouting or to be quiet, we don't know their numbers and what seems to be a main camp may be one of many, but I leave it to your discretion and analysis of the situation in the field."

>>21782145
Open the box, we have prybars and stuff lying around.
>>
>>21782195
Tell him to report immediately if he finds any of the giant monsters, especially if there is a group of them. They are a great threat to our base, considering the current state of its structures.
>>

>>21782322
>>21782119
You nod to Gunther, gesturing to the forests, "We're going to focus on clearing down those trees soon enough, plus getting other fortifications built. Get the camp cleared out." You order him, already thinking about how you can best fortify the area.

"And try to be quiet about it-- if it's too impractical, just radio back for reinforcements. Otherwise... I leave it to your discretion."

This seems to elicit a bit of a smile from the man at your trust in him, but not too much of one. The smile of a happy serial killer given the leisure of killing freely.

And just like that, the five-man unit is marching off west, barely taking time to reload at one of the trucks.

>Basic Trench added
>Wooden Pallisade added
>Machine Gun Nests added

>ETA: 30 days.
>Projects will take place in order of quickest to slowest.

You also begin to mentally formulate a few ideas for fixed concrete structures.
>Machine Gun Nests [Concrete] option added.
>ETA: 7 Days
>Supply Depot [Concrete] option added
>ETA: 5 days.

Finally, you see the man pop the crate open, revealing a large pile of hay crowded around a large wooden box. A lacquered wooden box, painted with geometric shapes and the same crest as the one the man wears on his tabard. He opens it up under the watching eyes of you and his escort, revealing...

>4 Steel Rings
>1 Wooden Stick

The four rings are identical in nature, inscribed with the same rune as the box. The stick is made of very well-polished cherry, and is about the length of your forearm. Its tipped with a large ruby at the end. A ruby that'd easily fetch you several thousands Deutschmarks back home, nevermind the tiny diamonds on each ring.

Inexplicably, you feel a sense of power radiating from the inside of the smaller, lead-lined box. One previously not felt in your entire life.
>>
>>21782252
Our greatest limitation, at the moment, is manpower.
So, rather than planning fortifications half a year in advance, why don't we draw up a doctrine for management of our human resources? Things like drawing up a patrol schedule, a rotating watch calendar, picking a location for a sentry post or two.

Also - morale. We have limited resources. So I suggest we ration what alcohol we have, and schedule everyone some leisure time once basic fortifications are done.

Then we can ramp things up again, once the next Gate shipment arrives.

Come to think of it, add some basic warehouse structures to the build queve, and maybe a freshwater cistern or two.

In a week or so, we could organize an event to blow some steam - maybe find some musicians who brought an instrument and set up a band? A dance would be good for morale.

Should we send a party to strip the mansion bare? I presume that goods such as linens, tools, food and furniture were left behind, and would help us out.
>>
>>21782537
Open the smaller box. Also, do we have any landmines or the supplies needed to make fougasse.
>>
>>21782537
Are we gonna become a wizard?

It's time for rash experimentation, don't fuck with the stick yet, but try on one of the rings. See what happens.
>>
>>21782537
That is some suspicious shit. Let's grab the good doctor and our native VIP and open the lead box.
Depending on them, either something happens or we can try the presumably magical goodies out.
>>
>>21782537

the lead-lined box clearly is some kind of power source, so we must test it BEFORE opening it. it may contain quantities of Uranium or Plutonium. best to err on the side of caution.

(clearly it is magical, but Oberst doesn't know of magic... much)

on the side of concrete defences, i believe we should save them untill we have decided the location for our Main Base, not our initail outpost.

Your men have already established a rotating patrol schedule without previous oversight. Currently, there's three shifts, each eight hours long. Two squads of Wehrmacht during the "Day" shift, two at night, and one in the afternoon. There's also one squad of Combat Engineers active during the Day and Afternoon shifts, with the Night shift being when they rest (so as to prevent creating too much noise/light pollution at night).

As you let Gunther go on his merry way, you decide that some alcohol rations might be in order, as well as a bit of leisure time. Just how that's planned out isn't certain, this being only day two, but it's certainly in order.

As far as a warehouse is concerned, you don't have any wells to tap, but you do have the nearby river if you wish to dig a channel to divert some of it. It will probably take two or three days to do so, however, in a fashion large enough to fill a cistern (or, more realistically, some easily constructed water tanks with available sheet metal).

A Warehouse [Basic] should be able to cover your immediate storage needs, though a Supply Depot [Concrete] would be more fortified against direct attack.

>>21782874
No. If it comes to a siege we can't break, we're dead anyway. We need indepent water source for two or three days at most. For now, we can make do with some emergency water tanks.

But building a channel all the way to our base from the river, uphill, is out of the question.

If the circumstances change, say, after the next Gating, we can reconsider.
>>
>>21783016
Mines, in our situation, are useless. Remember - we will have to dig them back out once we expand our perimeter, which is much worse than placing them in the first place.

If anything, we should place some trip flares, which are much more useful, and save the mines for a better opportunity, such as a chokepoint on that forest road, or an approaching army.
>>
>>21782864
Currently, the base is limited in lighting. You have a few generators mounted up to the main building, with some basic cables running along between the barracks, mess hall, and triage area. You have a few spotlights also packaged and ready for assembly, but you won't be putting on any light shows or pulling off a grand opening any time soon.

>>21782913
>>21782922

You have a flurry of questions and ideas, and the man seems a bit overwhelmed at first, but he seems to relax a bit more.

You also assign a few of the engineers to weld together a few thousand-gallon drums for water storage, so they can be filled from the river and used as an emergency reservoir if needed.
>ETA: 4 Hours

All in all, you're starting to actually use the supplies you packaged. Not bad at all, Oberst!

The swordsman, on the other hand, seems a bit taken aback, "German is your battle-cant?" He asks, "Err... I am Eric Mottle, sire." He comments, puffing his chest up somewhat, "I am the Master of Arms for Baron Farnsworth, master of these realms! I and my men were dispatched to slay the foul ogre Ironmaw and his band. Ironmaw's lieutenant, Whitetooth, led an assault on my men and I when we were resting in Lord Othar's estate. I do not know of the Lord's fate, but myself and my men were quickly overtaken, and I was taken captive as the rest of Ironmaw's band razed the village."
>>
Once we have the lizard question sorted out one way or another we can always use the rings and the rescues to gain the confidence of the nearest human settlement and hire extra labor for the brute tasks of digging holes and cutting trees and so forth under the direction of our engineers and ourselves, decreasing queue-time for builds.
>>
>>21783226
He gives this last bit of detail a bit mournfully, likely reliving the events as he regales you with his loss. The loss of all his men, a man in a position likely not too far away from your own.

"These rings-- surely you know of them, sire? Rings of Tongues. Crafted by the Magister so we might interrogate the foul ogres and their kobold minions. My men and I had scouted their position, but they apparently followed us back to our abode."

Dr. Buren sucks this up like a sponge, "-Fascinating-. These rings automatically translate for you? The reptilians-- the... Kobolds. They speak a different language from you... These rings serve as translation mechanisms for flawless comprehension of any given dialect?"

"... It makes me able to speak what you're speaking, yes." He replies lamely.

>>21783016
A rough ring of mines would probably take about an hour to effectively establish in a 360 degree pattern. If you want to only mine the bordering forest, it'll take you about half an hour, though it'll only protect the immediate area facing the woodlands, which is already trapped with tripwires attached to flares and a handful of machine gun nests.

>>21783071
>>21783004
>>21782990
You could make some damn stylish lampshades, but you don't have the necessary chemistry lab to make soap. You could also make some very nice boots.

>>21783223
You currently have some flares, but you could add more as well. Holding off on the mining command until confirmation is received, but time is ticking. Gunther is bound to make first contact soon, unless you have Gretta radio for him to call off the hunt... which may serve to piss him off a good amount.
>>
>>21783259
The problem with mines is that they make expansion that way once we've laid them incredibly difficult.

We already have machinegun nests, make sure we have men on high alert for the next while, just in case.

Keep on asking Eric questions, get a good idea of the surrounding area, have him draw us a map if possible, the local culture, what he knows about magic, what the wand is, what's in the lead box, we have a lot of questions.
>>
>>21782840
Deadpan "Magic, I presume?".
Then introduce ourselves, tell him our rank and the name of our country, and that we're an expeditionary force. Don't mention that we're here to stay yet - play it as 'recon in force' if necessary, maybe defer any long-term decisions to our superiors.

Ask him about the lizardmen, and some basic politics - such as where we are, who rules this land, and why the fuck are subhuman raiding parties around killing civillians.

Oh, and about magic - start with philosophical side of things and move from there (i.e. "Is magic a thing like any other, or does it obey its own rules heedless of anything else? Where does it come from? Is it quantifiable? Divisible? Transmutable? Containable? Predictable? Impersonal, or specific to each individual?) - don't be afraid to admit ignorance - if pressed, say the truth - study of magic is a matter of a close circle of scholars in our land, and they hoard that knowledge jealously (i.e. Thule, and every occultist since freaking Hermes Trismegistos in general).
>>
>"... It makes me able to speak what you're speaking, yes." He replies lamely.

Now, we just have to sell it like that.

Still undecided about the usage of mines and the watch tower, you turn to one of the sergeants on patrol nearby,

"Rouse the men and keep them on high alert. We may be having visitors soon." You remark.

Eric looks curiously at the man's weapons, before glancing over everyone else, "Err, yes, sire. Magic." He remarks a bit humbly, "My sword is magic, a gift from the Baron as a sign of his favor, but it is nowhere near the level of your own magic weapons. Your soldiers managed to fell an entire cadre of the vicious ogres and their kin in nary the blink of an eye, sire." He comments, sounding slightly awed, "Your staves are truly powerful... Are you the Emperor's mages? I had heard word of the power of the Robed Sentinels, but I never thought their kind would see fit to address mere ogres and their kin..."

Dr. Buren abruptly cuts in, "Magic-- Ah! Clearly, it's technology this man isn't quite familiar with." She mentions, nodding to herself, "Now, let's try a few phrases..."

"Como te llamas?"
"Eric Mottle..."
>>
>>21783670
Well, it doesn't seem to care what language it is.

Ask about the wand, the lead box, if the rings let you read a foreign language as well.
>>
>>21783670

This goes on few a full minute, and you feel more and more aware of the impending fight.

She eventually goes wide-eyed, "My god. Every language I know... even languages that are all but dead! He can speak them flawlessly with that ring." She whispers. She looks to the remaining three, "Sir, if you'll allow me to use one, I can extract information from the remaining-- remaining Kobold, I believe it's called."

Eric would speak up as you ask about the wooden rod-thing, "That? That's a wand that was entrusted to us. Fully charged, I'm told, and capable of unleashing fireballs large enough to consume an entire lance of men in a single strike."

A weapon?
>Time until first contact: 10 minutes.

>>21783649
You can potentially hook the spotlight and generator up on the same truck. Plenty of room even on the lighter ones, but it'll be much more vulnerable to attack when set up like that.

>>

have the patrols pulled tight to the base, if we get attacked, i want reinforcments there quickly. if we have half of the patrol on fixed postions facing the forest, the other half can be split into two groups and cover the flanks.
hopefully this will prove to be a needless precaution, but better to err on the side of caution while we are still lacking in proper fortificaitons
>>
>>21783670
Ask Eric to tell us more about the Emperor's mages, and mages in general. Don't let on too much, but make it apparent that we're interested in magic, since where we're from, things work differently.

This is assuming he'll let us use the firewand, no use starting a kerfuffle with the (presumably) friendly natives if we don't need to...

>>21783643
Fun, but I've several complaints:
One, it's far too fictional. Actual fallen angels like Azazel, Sethiel, Alalel and Raziel are absent from it.
Two, the -iel suffix is appended to nonsensical roots.
Three, the names aren't in Aramaic.

Hence, disappointment.

Also, there aren't enough squiggly lines, and there are too many semicircles and sharp corners among the sigils.
>>
>>21783767
Why not let one of them use it? They're not stupid so I presume they won't turn it on us unless they feel like suicide via Wehrmacht. I just want to see it used at least once, doesn't matter to me who uses it as long as the wand isn't aimed at us.
>>
>>21783693

Eric pauses as he considers your question, "... Sire?" He asks, looking like he just got asked a trick question, "Surely your staves rely on the same method? Marble, the most precious of stones, and the most magically potent. I am no master magi, but the arcane radiance of marble recharges magical items." He comments, gesturing to the lead-lined case. It's pretty damn heavy, actually.

"We have naught but a few grams of it, enough to recharge the wand once, after it expends its ten imbued conjurations, sire... Surely your staves use marble as well? Or, at least, quartz?"

Dr. Buren would speak up as she donned the ring, quickly snatching up one of the books.

"... Interesting." She'd remark, "A book on genealogy." She'd say, gently placing it down before picking up another, "Agriculture, agriculture, fables..."

She'd seem to space out for a few minutes, even as you order the patrols to tighten up a bit. You currently have the following troops, all now roused from their schedules:

>[ ] One Squad of SS Commandos. (Down 1 man)
>[ ] 40 Wehrmacht infantrymen. These are broken down into 5 squads of 8, including a medic and a machine gunner, as well as submachine gun soldiers and riflemen.
>[ ] 10 Opel Blitz light trucks, carrying ammunition, medical supplies, and fuel.
>[ ] 4 Krupp Protze heavy trucks, carrying the above, in addition to heavier construction materials and supplies.
>[ ] 4 Sd.Kfz. 251 with machine guns, towing a pair of FlaK 38.
>[ ] 2 Sd.Kfz. 247
>[ ] 1 Panzer IV tank
>[ ] Two squads of a dozen Combat Engineers each, able to quickly erect fortifications and assist in military constructions.

Seeing everyone abruptly get out of their bedrolls, nevermind the sudden surge of people from the barracks now clutching rifles and donning uniforms, Eric looks a bit intimidated.

"... Err, sire?" He presses, "I do not understand why you test my knowledge." He mentions, "Magic is something well beyond my ken, but I know a little of the matter. I know that mages draw from the magic of the world and themselves, and can perform great feats with it. They can enchant items, even, though none I have seen are as glorious as your own." He compliments, eyeballing your Mauser with clear avarice in his eyes before averting his gaze. He does not resist as you claim the firewand, just staring at you curiously as he obediently listens. For now, he seems to cling to his illusion.

Okay, new plan. Dr. Buren takes one of the fully-charged rings and interrogates the Kobold. Someone else takes the last fully-charged ring and notes down the titles of as many books as he can before the charge runs out.

Eric gets a slightly uncomfortable look on his face at the question about his sword,

Unfortunately, with Gunther and the commandos gone, you're at a distinct lack of sharpshooters. You do, however, have machine gun nests, trip flares, and about sixty men clutching various firearms all pointed towards the forest or thereabouts.

Even as you watch, Wehrmacht soldiers skid into their small machine gun pits and foxholes, your viewpoint from the top of camp giving you a superb view as your troops fall into place like clockwork. Not for the first time, you're glad that your engineering talents have gone to good use.

Someone kills the generators as the time comes.

Then, you hear it, a long, drawn-out rattle of gunfire. Joined by smaller notes of gunfire. Eric, at your side, is wide-eyed as he awaits what's to come.

There's a distant ripple of explosions,

"HOW DO YOU SCUM-SUCKERS LIKE THAT?! Stick grenades don't agree with you?!"

Machine gun fire can be heard through the forests as Gunther eventually speaks up, "I bought us some breathing room, but I've got eighty-plus hostiles bearing down on us. They must have had multiple campsites. Requesting backup for exfiltration!"

You could dispatch a squad of Wehrmacht to head into the woods after Gunther to help his men back, but it'd weaken the defensive line. Similarly, you could leave Gunther and his men to get back on their own, trusting in their abilities even in the face of this fuckup, but maintaining an iron perimeter. Or, a third option, if you can think of it.

>>21784822
You could, indeed, move the tank forward a bit. The forests themselves are fairly thick, but have a multi-ton piece of armored fighting vehicle. German-engineered, too!

However, while Hans could power through in the tank, "I can get forward just fine, but getting back might prove a wee bit tricky. I'm ready and rearin' to go if you need me."

>>21784761
While you could certainly hug it, you doubt it'd be very receptive to hugging at this point. Dr. Buren did just drag it off to God-knows-where, likely fully intent on performing a vivisection on it while asking it about its childhood.

>>21784853
You could, but you doubt he could be heard very well over the sounds of machine guns, grenades, and screaming Kobolds and Ogres.

Still, it'd be kinda badass and all, if you could get some good war chants going.

As you contemplate having some Kobold-skin boots made, you quickly send your orders out. One of the reserve squads moves forward, the engine of a 247 roaring to life under Hans' belligerent shouting. Everyone is on edge. This is the first real battle, and this is where they'll see the mettle of everyone.

Watching from the command post's unfinished interior, Eric has an absolutely terrified look on his face. These things slaughtered him and his men. What hope might you have?

Well, for one, the psychotic yelling of Gunther over the radio, apparently hauling whoever had the radio with him between bursts of machine gun fire.

"I WILL FACEFUCK YOUR MOTHER, YOU ALIEN SON OF A BITCH!"
BRR-TAT! BRR-TAT!

It sounds like a typewritter with a gas engine hooked up to it, even in the distance. Punctuating the early morning's sunrise, the sun at your backs, with the sound of death itself.

>>21784998
The correct application of force in this case is explosives Herr Anon, not fire. Let us move our tanks out towards the forest where they can be of some use, but lets not take the risk of fouling the things up on rocks or shattered tree stumps.

In the meantime let us give our extraction team as many explosives as humanly possible and send them in to retrieve Gunther and his team. We may not like Gunther but we are loyal servants of the Riech and so is he.

You scream orders for a few men to roll the heavy guns into position, their firepower worth their weight in munitions at this point.

The armored car screams across the terrain to the forest, and you can actually see the muzzle flashes of the weapons of the commandos. You can also see a seemingly unending tide of angry eyes, all staring directly at your camp. You stirred a hornet's nest alright, but Gunther seems to be giving a righteous showing as his men fall back. They're darting from tree to tree, and you hear an unfamiliar rustling noise on the wind.

It takes you a second to process that the rustling is the noise of arrows piercing the canopy and rushing through the trees, peppering the timber in their wake.

Eighty-plus is right. You'd imagine that there can't be any less than a hundred. Maybe even more than that.

You're not sure when you said it, or even if you do say it, but it's said anyways. The order to open fire is uttered.

The die is cast.
>>
>>21785211

assuming Obersturmbannfuhrer's roll is our opposition check, we're in a pile of trouble. i expect heavy casualties and about one dead squad...
>>
>>21785211
You aren't sure of exact casualties to begin with, but you'd estimate at least three. Four, maybe, as a few of the arrows hit home on the infantry squad coming to support. They fall to the ground as the men behind them open fire. Rifles and machine guns blast away, the ground actually shaking.

Eric's first reaction is to fall to his knees, and you almost wonder if there's a sniper. Instead, you realize that the man is actually -praying- from the awe-inspiring display of power.

Entire trees are scythed down from the amount of bullets being spewed out. Dirt is churned up in abundance, and you see shell casings dance in the early light of the sun.

Gunther and his men reach the armored hull of the 247 as the gunner opens fire, his own machine gun scything down a pair of ogres that were rushing towards the fleeing men. A third one flings an oversized hatchet, and you can only watch in morbid fascination as the man's helmet is cleaved in twain and he goes cascading back. Seems like Gunther had to drag two of his men with him, all five of them looking wounded to varying degrees.

The driver doesn't play games. He just guns the engine and does a donut, whacking another Ogre in the side as it tries to leap aboard. One of the commandos fixes that with a trenchgun sandwich.

Not exactly a stellar success of a recovery operation, but your men are pouring on the bullets now. The AA guns are being wheeled forward when you spot a second group, this one entirely of Kobolds emerging along the eastern edge of the forest, running fast. Their leather cloaks would be good in the dead of night, but the sun was working against them now.

However, while the main advance was being stymied, you're already down half a squad. Do you draw further strength away from the front lines of the Wehrmacht defenses to address the half-dozen Kobolds, or do you attempt something else?

Roll 1d20 for second phase of battle.

I say we capture some kobolds, defang and declaw them and shove them into wooden crates. We'll send them back to the Riech on a truck as proof of what this world offers. In the meantime We'll stick to wearing kobold skin goods.

Now the ogres are a different matter. They all need to die since they're large and very likely uncontrollable. Better that we send 1 stuffed ogre and 1 ogre corpse back to the Riech for examination of the science divisions.

What else should we send back to the riech?

>>
>>21786272
Well my theory on the magic is this:

It's a prime force of the universe, much in the same way gravity or electromagnetism is.

Its more abundant in fantasy land and can be store din marble and transfered into magical items.

On Earth its not present at all.

So lets be prepared for magic not being available at all.
>>
>>21786134
What, the rings that allow you to speak a different language?

>>21785351
Radio Hans and tell him to get that Panzer moving to head of the flankers. Give them a taste of some HE.
>>
>>21786740
Speaking of HE, next shipment better contain some Willie Pete, shit would be DEVESTATING against these guys
>>
>>21786436
Well... considering there's a giant gate that sends things to another world through what I presume is magic, I think magic could work in Earth as well, to at least a limited degree.
>>
>>21786814
it's obvious magic works on Earth, how else would we have gotten here?
>>
>>21786943
Notrice "Diminished effect" part of my theory.

We have an enormous gate powered by magic, since magic isn't present on earth we can assume in a previous age it was more prominent and may return (as theorized by the aztecs with their belief the world ends on the year 2012, implying that magic will return and earth will be reborn, meaning tha t magic will return and stuff will happen due to that.) The gate may be able to take us to different worlds but only ones where magic is a powerful force.

TL;DR
The gate is powered by magic from fantasy land. Magic doesn't have to work on earth for it to work.
>>
>>21787220
My mistake then, and yea that does seem like a fairly likely scenario, either way something worth looking into then.
>>
>>21787278
Agreed, even if magic doesn't work on Earth think about what we could do with ancient magical texts and artifacts taken from earth to fantasy land.

'Course I could be totally wrong and magic might work on earth so its probably best if we wait for OP, do some research on magic in fantasy land and let the Riech do some research on items we send them before we try anything.
>>
>>21787220
Adding to this, the fact that we have to use huge amounts of power to keep the gate open for even a short amount of time on Earth makes sense if we consider the magical effect on Earth (if there is any) to be very week.
>>
>>21787351

If we assume that the gate is a high level magic device, the rings would be a rather low level one. Based on the idea that electricity can suppliment magic, the rings could be charged from an electrical socket thusly still good for espionage.
>>
>>21788149
But the only thing the rings are good for is understanding different languages, and I'm pretty sure our spies already know how to do that...
>>
>>21788149
From everything we've seen it takes a month or so of power to get the gate functioning, from what we've seen a charge of magic lasts for maybe ten minutes.

I don't think, short of a electrical cord of some sort, that we'll be able supply magical devices with enough electricity Until around the late 60s or early 70s as earth tech goes.

That is assuming we're able to universally substitute electricity for magic. For all we know the Gate is part of some divine shenanigans and we're pawns in some grand cosmic game.
>>
>>21788355

that may be the case, but with the rings, we could get people like Gunther into allied command, fortified positions or other places where they could really make the allies hurt...

>>21788376
you point is valid. this is only speculation at this point, as the entire premesis of this idea revolves around that the magic items can be powered by electricity. if that doesn't work then nothing of value will be lost.
>>
>>21785697

Life is a lot like a box of chocolates.

You never know what you're going to get. Or, in some cases, when a 200 kilo slab of non-human horrifying monster charges at you in an effort to devour the "chocolate" that is your face.

Fortunately, the moment those ogres and kobolds charge into the open, they're mincemeat. Machine guns with overlapping fields of fire shred the first wave of the lizards, the larger ones hanging back but still taking some losses in their advance. The riflemen were taking off targets of opportunity, but it did little more than provide suppressing fire. Suppressing fire in the face of eighty-plus charging contacts, which were now nearing the outskirts of your defensive position.

>>21786740
>>21786805
Hans gives a whoop of glee as you radio him, "FINALLY! I thought I'd be left out of the fight." He radios back, and Eric just stares in surprise at the noise of the radio's speakers.

Gretta also patches through to the squad of Wehrmacht already at half-strength from the rescue attempt, routing them to assault the flanking force.

Needless to say, the sounds of their success are heard over the radio as you secure at least a minor victory, though the oncoming horde of monsters is pressing on. There's perhaps forty of the original hundred-plus monsters that had been roused from the forests, forming a V-shaped lance aimed at the heart of your four defending squads.
>>
>>21797858
Arrows having been abandoned for javelins and thrown axes, you watch as a swarm of javelins peppers the foremost of the machine gun nests, a pair of javelins lancing clean through the netting as the gun goes silent.

Which is right around the point when three things happen:
>The AA guns finally make it to the front lines, finishing setup to start firing.
>Hans, letting out a whoop worthy of the Dukes of Hazzard over the radio, brings his 25 tons of hardened steel straight through the camp. The latrine gets crushed in his wake as he barely misses the command tent, the main gun leveled down-range as he prepares to fire on the heart of the enemy forces.
>Ironmaw makes his appearance. Now visible from the center of a five-Ogre escort, the Ogre is black skinned and has two massive tusks made of iron crudely jutting from his mouth. He's also carrying what looks like a heavy tower shield made from the entire front half of a tree, with an axe in his other hand.

Ironmaw bellows something, and you know just what he wants: A duel. Someone able and willing to take the leader of this warband on in single combat.

FlaK fires HE on to the enemy
All infantry that are not providing aid are to hold the line, we should have all our Commandoes, infantry and Engineers on the line.

Have the commandoes reinforce against the flankers.

Hans engages with HE as well

Try to keep non-small arms munitions expenditures to a minimum, inform the FlaK crews and Hans to try to use coax/bow gun and personal weapons for dispersed targets.

You blink a few times as you realize just what this massive thing wants. It wants to fight you, an engineer, in single combat.

You decide to answer the best way a civilized gentleman of the 20th century can: By grabbing the radio horn and shouting,

"Hans! Enemy leader at 11 o'clock! Pulverize him!"
"Aye aye! It'll be my pleasure!" Hans replies, giving a cackle over the radio as the tank's turret swivels. Eric stares in absolute awe at the massive thing, and you can actually understand a word that leaves his lips... The only word, even.

"... Big."

You take a bit of caution in abruptly yanking the man back as the Panzer's machine guns open fire. Bullets rip apart Ironmaw's bodyguards, right until the radio is abruptly silenced by Hans shouting,

"HEAT GOING DOWNRANGE!"

The world goes silent as the tank fires, a single shell streaking through the early morning air, whirling in its arc until it makes contact.

Where?
>>
Square on Ironmaw's face, the Ogre's expression through your binoculars priceless for that split second. A mixture of 'aww shit' and 'What?'

You don't even bother guessing what becomes of him when the shell detonates. The entire heart of the enemy's advance is ripped out, the FlaK guns shredding the remainder of the enemy forces. You've taken some losses...

But judging by the fact that Eric was currently at your feet, seemingly praying as he witnessed the shift in the tide of battle before him? You've made quite the impression on this world.

Secure the prisoners, for now under guard from the understrength wermacht squad. Treat their injuries AFTER we see to our own men, after all, there are rules for warfare. We'll need to add a prison pit to the to-do list after we repair our camp.

Commend Hans for his accuracy, but Reprimand him for failure to adhere to posted routes through camp. While we appreciate his eagerness, he kind of demolished the Latrines.

That's what the commendation is for.

Just because someone did a good thing doesn't mean the bad can be overlooked. We're a military force, we have regulations and orders. Besides, the commendation will far outweigh a minor reprimand.

It's not like we're fining him or cutting his booze ration.

When the infantry at last emerge from their holes, the medics are already hard at work, aiming to save as many lives as possible. Gurneys flow out in a steady stream from the triage tent, carting your wounded men inside for the steady hands of Dr. Klein and the squad medics now serving as impromptu nurses.

The under-strength squad marches the six captured Kobolds away at gunpoint, herding them around the wounded Ogres and their fellow comrades out in the field. Another squad goes to collect the fallen bodies, rolling them aside for now and into a large pile.

Worst comes to worst, you can make a bonfire out of it, but the triage tent is currently full of wounded men.

"Hans?" You radio, hearing the tank operator whoop loudly.
"SPOT ON! Bastard didn't even get a chance to shit his britches! Good work, lads." He commends his crew.
"Hans!" You assert,
"Aye, sir?"
"... Good work. You're getting a commendation for that. Saved a lot of lives with your timely arrival."
"HA! I knew I liked ya!" He replies, "Thank you kindly, sir. I thought the quickest entrance would be best."
"... And you're getting a reprimand for destroying the latrine. I'd rather not have to let my coffee finish digesting in the woods that we just filled full of holes."
"... Aye, sir." He grumbles a bit, but still sounds rather pleased.

>>21798577
The gate is very large. It'd be quite possible to get aircraft sent through, but that would require an entire airfield to be built to support the usage of aircraft. You could likely build a dirt runway at this point, but that's hardly the sort of aerial palace one might hope for.
>>
There seems to be a simple way to deal with Gunther. He drove his tank through the latrines, so make him clean the tank.
>>
>>21798892

Airfield can wait until we have at least a battalion of combat arms personnel available, AND a large enough base to support the operation of even a few aircraft. We'd need at the least local metal supplies, if not fuel and raw materials for ammunition and bombs, as well.
>>

>"... And you're getting a reprimand for destroying the latrine. I'd rather not have to let my coffee finish digesting in the woods that we just filled full of holes."

You imagine that Gunther probably ended up carrying one of the fallen troopers over his back, while dragging the other and firing one-handed.

Of course, inside of your psyche, you know that he probably just picked one of them up like a kitten, dragged one with his one hand, and then fired his anti-tank rifle one-handed through the middle of the enemy forces.

Thankfully, he's being much more sedate by sitting outside of the triage tent, staring in the direction of the forest like some kind of freaky statue.

Oh, and Eric's still praying at your feet. It's kind of nice, really, since you can interpret his words as praise for you without having anything that can deflate your personal fantasy.

Also, the poster you linked to confused the names.
>>
>>21798955
It was. Especially since Hans could rightfully kick your ass up and down the street for putting a black mark on his record, being the stubby, meaty wrecking ball that he is.

>>21798927
Plus, Hans will have to clean his tank anyways if he doesn't want to wear a gas mask inside of it, so that's plenty torture enough, unless you feel like being a jerk.

>>21798947
You'll also need pilots and appropriate radio personnel to operate traffic control. Gretta is one woman, and her talented operating skills is enough for your current force... but she can't do everything.
>>
>>21798955

He ran over the latrines.

You know, the place we shit in?

Hygiene is one of the top concerns for a soldier in the field. You don't want to get sick, because then you take out yourself, and buddy next to you, because he's got to take of you. That's 2 men down, and you aren't even fighting yet. Plus, we set routes for vehicle travel through camp. Those are important so that we know where the danger zones are for getting run over. Tanks can't see well, so you have to stick to them to avoid running over friendlies.
>>
>>21799028
Jesus Christ. It's not like making another latrine is rocket science. One can be set up in less than half an hour.
>>
>>21799028
Yeah, we can joke about it, and then put people towards fixing it and take measures to make sure it doesn't happen again, but there's no way in hell we're gonna actually complain or formally reprimand him for saving our bacon with the Panzer.

We can rib him about it, but no actual black marks. He already has to clean his tank, that's enough punishment for me.

>>21799019
Make sure to give congratulations and commendations and all that where they are due, people did a damn good job today.
>>
>>21799070

That's not the issue..

Oh goddamnit I'm willing to bet I'm the only one in this thread who understands just why Hans should be getting a reprimand and why that isn't such a big deal. (Since it isn't a high-level one).
>>
>>21799104
Exactly this.
>>
>>21799116
was it the almost running over the command tent?
>>
>>21799019
Since we're still in radio contact with home, do they know anything about recent events? Either way, we should make a report soon.
>>
>>21799116
Oh, no, I understand what you mean: Hans did break a few rules in his high-speed rescue. If someone was in the path of the latrines he did run over, you'd be peeling them up. Also, there's the fact that running over the latrines has probably left a fair bit of (unhealthy) stink in the local area. Germs, too.

But the general consensus, as far as I can tell, is that the value of Hans helping out earned him a pass on what would be a minor reprimand in the light of everything. "Scratch his back, so he'll keep scratching mine."
>>
>>21799116

No, it's violations of 1 order, and destroying 1 camp building.

1) Didn't stick to approved vehicle routes

2) Destroyer the latrine.

Yes, he saved our ass, hence the commendation

But, he violated orders and destroyed buildings to do so, hence a low-grade official reprimand. Given the prestige the commendation will give AND the fact that he's on a secret deployment, it's not like a single reprimand will shaft his career. EVERYONE gets punished at some time or another, even demoted.
>>
>>21799187
The Command Post will be finished soon, enabling a much stronger signal, but the basic radio equipment Gretta has set up is able to broadcast (somewhat choppily) through the Gate. You can make a report to high command if you wish.

>>21799104
>>21799163
Judging by the cheering of the men below, or at least those not busy trying to round up captives or tend to wounded, they're congratulating themselves plenty. You could make a speech if you want, though, or maybe figure out a way to reward them. There's plenty of booze and fish.

There's also the dead soldiers that need to be tended to, but Father Vickerson can handle that if you'd rather not deal in the sensitive affairs of death.
>>
Why are we fighting over the damn latrines? More conquest, less harumphing.

Also, something to note, we need to test this "marble" and see if it is regular old marble. Because if marble recharges magic in this world, and is a less valuable commodity in our world, then we can import marble from Germany to charge magical objects and to trade with the locals. Just because marble doesn't operate that way in our world doesn't necessarily mean marble from our world won't operate like that here, which is why we need to see if their "marble" is really marble as we know it.
>>
>>21799301
Dr. Buren and Gabriella are your brightest minds in the fields of science, as far as you're aware. Either woman should be able to provide at least some insight, though perhaps in different ways. The latter is likely in the barracks attempting to decipher the books and set up what equipment she can without a proper laboratory. The former is currently in the triage tent, likely either helping operate on soldiers or torture her captive Kobold. Maybe even both.
>>
Ok we slaughtered the main force, great.

lets get a head count of our men and round up a hunting party to chase down any survivors. We want to check the enemy camps, kill anything there and have a quick look for anything noteworthy(loot-probably fresh from the village).

Gunther seems a bit out of it, but if he is up to it have him lead the hunting party. He has been working his ass off, make sure it is clearly optional and either way he gets some down time.
>>
>>21799292
Lets request ammunition and replacements ASAP. I'm sure Germany can spare them considering how important this is.
Also, some engineers would be great for speeding up construction and freeing up troops, with the commandos out of action for a while we will need to rely on the infantry platoon.
>>
>>21799292
Make a report. Note all the major events, including our repelling this assault with only minor casualties, and our acquisition of "magic" items, the scientific principles behind them being under investigation at this time.

I recommend complimenting the men on their expert defense of this position. Several of them gave their lives in service to the Fatherland, and their fellows should be proud that they served with such dedicated soldiers.

Ask Gabriella what we can do to reward them.
>>
>>21799292
Well we just fought off a small army of monsters, get the camp back in order and our men sorted before we see about a report BUT dont delay it. No doubt this battle, the marble magic and other details will attract great political attention

You give a somewhat short, but heartfelt commendation of the men via the radio.

"This battle has proven something, men, that I'm sure you have all realized: This world is dangerous, but it is a world that we can conquer. Your brothers gave their lives so we can hold the outpost-- the -colony- we now stand in. You have fought well and hard, and it is my pleasure to lead you into this new world. Carry on, men, with my gratitude."

This gets a number of approving smiles and nods, though the base doesn't have a PA system set up, so not everyone can hear your speech. Word will quickly spread, though, of your glowing commendation. Even Gunther seems a bit pleased at the recognition.

You quickly make your report, not skimping on details, to the Generaloberst. His reaction is one of mild shock, then disbelief, before eventually conceding that your report isn't a madman's dreams.

"... I see. We'll have additional soldiers and engineers sent with the second group at the end of the month. My recommendation is to further fortify your position and see what you can do to uncover more about the location. You've taken some losses, but you're at a high level of combat strength at the moment with your armored support. The situation is still in your hands, however, Oberst. You're there and I'm not."

Gabriella, once called into the command tent, would seem a bit thoughtful, "Well, the alcohol recovered could make for a good way for the men to celebrate? Turn the mess hall into a pub for the night and let them play their cards and gamble and the like. Nothing too out of hand, mind," She says somewhat cautiously, "But it'd be a good way of helping them unwind, I think, sir."
>>

Ask Gunther what he found at the Kobold/Ogre camps. Did all of them come out to fight, or are there some left back in the forest? Did he take notice of anything "magical?"
>>
>>21799596

Have the men dig a nice, deep hole to serve as the prison for now until we have enough spare time and wood to make a proper stockade.

For now, focus on repairs to the latrines, repairing the damage to the defenses, and improve them using local wood. Have the infantry do this, the combat engineers should begin work on a proper, fortified aid station and command post, setting aside enough concrete for properly made MG nests.

Have our comms room radio through a report on the engagement and our progress so far.
>>
>>21799116
Don't worry you're not the only one.

>>21799596
Well, looks like it's time to take care of the wounded and dead. If we're (relatively) clean, I'd suggest we start helping out by grabbing out own wounded and dead before helping these monsters.

>>21799757
Sounds like a good idea, not only does it get us in good with her and the men, but it allows us to give some unofficial punishment to Hans and anybody else requiring it by making them work MP duty, and we'll also help out there so we can show that we're all in it together.
>>
>>21799757
I thought we were also building trenches and a palisade?
>>
>>21799757
Pub it is. If we brought any music with us, now would be the time to play it.

We should draw up plans for some real fortifications, far enough out to give us a perimeter in which to expand the base. Even if we move our HQ at a later date, we still need to defend the gate.
>>
>>21799757

Why are we building a warehouse? Tents will serve just fine for now, we'd be better of using that material for a proper aid station and/or fortifying the defenses.
>>
>>21799837
I thought we decided not to as it limited our expansion outwards...

Also, make sure to appear at the burying of our corpses, while the Padre makes his service. Who knows? Perhaps his prayers have extra influence on the divine in this world
>>
>>21799757
Pub idea is alright, but we should still double up the guard in case they try a followup attack tonight. Short shifts so nobody misses out on the fun, and strict alcohol limit so we don't have to fight a night skirmish with drunk troops
>>
>>21799847

So that in the event something slips past the defenses the shit we have won't get set on fire and leave us completely and utterly fucked.
>>
>>21799757
I agree, we've had some good success, we'll have to make sure we maintain patrol presence and so on, but after today's events they deserve a reward. Also it means we can get some drinking time in with the twins and Dr. Buren.

We also need to deal with wounded, dead, prisoners. We're the commander so we need to at attend the funerals and speak some words, to do otherwise would be disrespectful.
>>
>>21799843

I disagree with the pub idea. Instead, give every man a ration tonight of two beers and/or wine, etc.

If they continue the good work, the ration stays in place. That way every man gets booze, but they shouldn't be too impaired if shit goes down.
>>
>>21799771
Gunther would reluctantly arrive, leaving his two remaining commandos to guard the triage tent's entryway.

"If there's any left back there, it won't matter." He remarks, giving a slightly sadistic grin, "Our first target was the huts with the young and the breeders. We were sneaking around there practically invisible, up until one of the hunters came home early. Ended up raising an alarm before Dennis could slit his throat-- that's when things went FUBAR, sir." He reports, relaxing somewhat from his delightful recollection.

"It's nothing but shanties out west, though. Thatch huts held together with mud in a tribal village, with a longhouse that the Ogres resided in. The longhouse shouldn't be a concern either." He adds, "We were thorough in making sure that the group would not be able to continue thriving here." He says, putting it politely.

Gabriella, for her part, looks mortified at the admission of 'child' murder. Monsters, all of them. Gunther, too, you suspect.

Warehouse was meant for the safe storage of goods, while most supplies are currently just sitting around in a large stockpile in the middle of camp.

>>21799843
The wooden palisade can be expanded, at an extra 10 days (30 total for just it) to provide enough room for a small army base-equivalent encampment.
>>
>>21799917
Hmm, wouldn't it have been more efficient to use their non-combatants as a force of labour?
>>
>>21800137

Honestly, they are primitive at best, they would be more of a hindrance to any labor than they would be a benefit.
>>
>>21800137
We're Nazis! Not monsters!

On a serious note, not really, we'd have to teach them how to do things and how to communicate, besides with them being able to communicate among themselves without us telling it would lead to a revolt or other uprising, not worth it.

Interrogate them, cage them, send them back to the Father Land with some translation tools.
>>
>>21800099

Isn't that why we brought tents along, regarding the warehouse? It can wait until we aren't in such a precarious position.

For now, we should concentrate on shoring up our defenses with sandbags, saplings, rough timber, and what concrete we can spare for the MG nests.

For defensive preparations, I vote we station Hans PzIV on the forest side, hull down on the hill, bow gun and turret oriented on the forest, with an easily traversed path exiting the camp to the north (ie: No fighting holes in the way), that way we can easily remove it

Move the FlaK guns to the Eastern side of the northern and southern lines, so they can be more easily manhandled to the Eastern side of camp, if needed.

Keep current infantry allocations.
>>
>>21800137
Too hard to guard and probably very shoddy workmanship. The best they can do is dig trenches.
>>
>>21799978

I can't wait to see what will happen once the outpost gets dedicated field artillery placed into the camp.

Also, we should probably cut back that forest a bit so that next time enemy troops have to cross a open field in order to assault fortified positions ala picketts charge rather than firing bows and arrows from concealed positions.

I am worried about the use of magic in this universe. It presents an unknown variable which, as of right now would be difficult to understand its limitations. I would recommend that the command post be shielded in lead paint or with some lead lining as a precaution. I would also recommend that there be tripwires or mines established along the perimeter to further ease the pressure on the soldiers from a direct frontal assault.

We should probably use the captured native of human descent to act as a liason for the local baron, once we have extracted enough information from him. Tell him to bring some of his mages and magical artifacts for study as well as maps of the region. This is a potential landmine of information that we need to exploit.
>>
>>21800251

We've been over the mines before, they are a good idea, up until we plan to expand and then the expansion ends up going at a snail's pace as we make damn sure we get every single one.

You decide to assign double booze rations for the night, as well as opening the mess hall up as a makeshift pub for the evening. The men still have to do their sentry shifts, but everyone has a chance at getting some R&R, even the combat engineers that have been working tirelessly to complete your jobs.

Eric, for his part, at last stops praying as you start assigning work. He doesn't speak an ounce of German without a charged ring to translate, but he seems to be very happy at this point. Delighted, even.

>Socialize in the pub to celebrate victory?
>Further orders?
>End Day 3?

>>21800137
Gunther just slowly shakes his head, "Too weak. They'd have been a waste of food, sir, and time."
>>
>>21800251

Bitch you been paying attention? We have tripflares all over the place, but no mines because we know we'll be expanding within the month.

We'll need some time to set up wire, though.
>>
>>21800251
Oh yea, dedicated field artillary will be awesome.

Agreed with the magic, but by the same token I don't think we can afford to worry about it until later. If anything we should move our main CP to the Manor since it's probably been fortified in the local way and that should allow us to figure things out.

Once our Combat Engineers get to a point where they can, let the massive deforestation campaign begin, this world is preindustrial so there has to be a fuckton of lumbar for the taking in the woods.
>>
>>21800298
Celebrate in the pub, we need some R&R. If we can get drunk with the twins and Dr. Buren if any of them are about.
>>
>>21800298
How many rings do we have?

And we want to get SOMEONE on teaching this man a respectable language!
>>
>>21800298
Time for a German Pub Crawl.
>>
As far as Hans is concerned, reprimand him. But make it a minor written reprimand. (ignored patrol routes, destroyed latrine, opened base up to contamination via sewage.) But we'll also give him a commendation for his excellent gunnery and tank piloting skills. (suggest he be given "lattitude" when given goals and that he doesn't respond well to "Authoritarian Command strictures.)

As for Gunther and his Psychopaths? I don't like them but they deserve commendations to, suggest they only be deployed when you absolutely, positively need something killed.

I also want an expedition sent into the woods later, preferably without Gunther's hand picked Psychopaths. We'll check to make sure the Untermensch's backs are broken, if so we leave them alone. If not we finish breaking their backs.

As for our captives? Defang and Declaw them, when the gate opens sedate them and send them through. Work on Ogre and Kobold leather goods and make certain we take to wearing Kobold leather boots.
>>
>>21800298
Attend the funerals of the dead before getting wasted, put in a word or two, then let the Padre do his work.
>>
>>21800350
Hard for much of a pub crawl with one "pub". I suppose we can walk outside, turn around and go back in every time song ends (assuming we have music) to simulate the experience.
>>
>>21800419
But of course!
>>21800381
Agreed, no reason to be standoffish when the men under us have died in this godforsaken hell-h^B^B^B^B^B potential new extension of the Glorious Third Reich!
>>
>>21800298
Share a few drinks and do our best to get a feel for the men, how are the feeling about the whole strange new world+lizard critters and monsters?

We should also work out with Eric and the rest of the natives what were doing, as it is we just slaughtered a small army and seem to be moving in. Theres no telling what there thinking
>>
>>21800494
At this point probably "Oh fuck, let's NOT fight these guys!"

I know I would be after seeing Hans fuck up Irontusk like he did.
>>
How much of our ammunition has been expended?
>>
>>21800530
I've asked that twice, nobody seems to care so its probably all good.
>>
>>21800494
Also if we have a ring left we should interrogate the rest of the humans. And by the humans I mean the red head and by interrogate I mean seduce, but not force upon.
>>
>>21800355
I disagree with reprimanding Hans at all. As a joke, sure constantly rib him about it. But we should save an actual reprimand for when he does something that actually deserves it.
>>
>>21800561
I'd assume we have enough until OP let's us know we've ran though X amount of ammo. Considering that we've got ~twice the amount of ammo we were originally kitted for I think we'll be good.
>>
>>21800494

I said before, we should start establishing political inroads with the local baron, getting mages and magical artifacts to study the effects of magic and their application on glorious German technology.

besides, we give the native a good feast, some good spirits, and have him bring the Baron with his guard. The baron should be grateful we just routed a ogre army so easily, but probably mightly concerned that he has a potential bigger threat on his doorstep. We tread lightly and create inroads until the gate is absolutely secure within a several mile radius/diameter, then we settle the matter with the power structure of this realm with blood and iron if necessary.
>>
>>21800598
Go look up Dysentery (I think I spelled that wrong.) You know what that disease is? It's a fucking nightmare is what it is. You know how people usually got it during sieges? People would dig a hole, then they'd shit in the hole. Flies would crawl on the shit, then they'd crawl on the food. Then people would eat the food. Then those people get Dysentery, then they die of dehydration because they shit up all their water.

Hans spread dung all over the fucking base because he could not be bothered to shave 5 seconds off deploying his tank by driving safely. He deserves a reprimand. We're a military outfit, not a bunch of school girls. Hans won't take us off his facebook page if we mention that he ran over the latrine and tracked raw sweage from one side of the base to the other because he knows that's precisely what he did.

Disease is not something we can laugh off, especially when the Riech is 30 days away through a terrifying unnatrual portal.
>>
>>21800597
Why would we need the redhead? She doesn't even speak our language and than burns through a ring's charge, a valuable resource. We can seduce the twins, not only are they superior German women, if we sleep with Gabreilla the pillow talk with be full of SCIENCE!
>>
>>21800660
Yes, make the human foreigners (well, that would be us but you know what I mean) welcome. Talk to the others and see about getting some maps of the damn world. We need to know if we have walked into a massive Empire or a pisspot Dukedom going down the drain.

what part of we being a FUCKING MILITARY OUTFIT do you not understand, we'd better fucking give him a repimand. It's not the end of the world, it shouldn't sour our long term relations, and if anything NOT issuing it will undermine our authority later.

Especially if we all get Dysentry.

Gonna say no. Especially not when his "Reprimand" consists of a bunch of words on a paper that gets printed out at command and put into a file right next to the commendation that says he was the hero of the battle.

Lets not worry about who to bed yet. We should think about metaphorically screwing fantasyland before literally screwing it.

Dude, we're germans, we eat, breathe, drink, shit, and piss protocol. Officers who refuse to do things required of them by their military protocols are corrupt and subject to being demoted, dishonorably disharged, or executed.

This is something we have to do. Period.
>>
"... Aye, sir." He grumbles a bit, but still sounds rather pleased.

reposting this for the blind anons who are still bitching about it. The matter has been dealt with, you can shut up about it now
>>
>>21800343
You have 2 rings that are 'emptied'. 2 with a full charge. Dr. Buren has one of the remaining charged rings, taken for her interrogation of the Kobold captive, whilst you possess the other.

>>21799825
The wounded are currently being treated in the triage tent by Dr. Klein and Dr. Buren.

>>21800185
Large cages to hold all the captives shouldn't be too difficult. (ETA: 4 hours). Do you wish to have the engineers build them after the water drums? Holding the monsters hogtied and at gunpoint works well enough for now.

>>21800196
Hans moves his vehicle to the forest side, as well as the FlaK guns being relocated as well. Sandbags are plentiful, and there's no shortage of upturned soil for filling them with. Concrete is much more precious, but the MG nests can be upgraded with an extra 10 days' work to utilize concrete pillboxes.

The warehouse is mainly for the sake of spoilage and preventing local rodents, plus providing an additional building to fight out of should the need arise. An organizational boon for a growing base.

The tents work fine for basic storage, but a warehouse will clear up room by providing for easier vertical storage.

>>21800251
Cutting back the forests, short of burning them down, will be a bit manpower intensive and likely take at least two weeks. Do you wish to proceed anyways?
>>
>>21801085
>>21800355
You write out some orders for Dr. Klein to defang and declaw the captives when able to do so, plus some autopsy work. The small reprimand is quietly entered into his record for now, but the commendation easily outweighs it. Opening his record, you see it's not the first reprimand he's ever received by a -long- shot. A testament to his skill to stay in the service.

Gunther and his men have much smaller records, and the commendations are very praising of them indeed. It seems that this isn't the first time they've taken injuries, and some of their operations look like they've been rather fantastic (judging by the amount of black ink used).

A squad of Wehrmacht are also put in queue for later investigating the woodlands, though you suspect that there can't be many more, if any, after the horde you faced.

>>21800530
>>21800561
Considering you packed extra ammunition with your men in addition to other goods? You've only expended perhaps 3% of your total supplies. You could fight a dozen battles like this without worrying. It's manpower that's the issue.

Father Vickerson, a rather wavy-haired older man in Wehrmacht uniform, is giving a rather heartfelt eulogy. These men clearly knew one another, and your own presence is lightly touched upon with a note of approval from the group's chaplain. The ceremony ends, however, after the men are interred upon foreign soil, their bodies draped in flags before being buried.

And with that, the pub crawling shall begin! The locals, including Eric, are invited to join in. They can't speak German, but all of them catch onto the concept of drinking music and fresh fish (and, later, sauerkraut with a bit of pantomimed encouragement). Even Dr. Buren, dressed in a slightly muddied medical uniform, and the twins Gabriella and Gretta are present in the mess hall.

The place is packed and the atmosphere vibrant, one of the men having brought over an accordion, now putting it to good use as the drinking songs and jigs were had.

And, in a happy way, the dead were mourned for. It wasn't a pub crawl, but the one you've built with your own sweat and toil seems all the better for it.

>>21800494
The men seem to be alright for now, but morale isn't as high as it was first coming over. Homesickness is slowly setting it, albeit counteracted with this evening of revelry. There's also the lack of comforts that had been given up in favor of additional medical supplies and military goods, which doesn't help too much. Your measures seem effective in keeping morale at a decent level, however, as does your apparent concern.

The world itself is very odd and weird for them all, but they seem to be coping well enough. These things are enemies of the Reich, and that has a straightforward answer to it.
>>
>>21801085
Yes lets build the cages, preferably out of local materials. We're going to need something to haul the Untermensch back through the gate with.

Secondly lets hack that forest up, no burning, That timber will come in handy, if only to show the Fuhrer the value of the land here.

Lets not bother with the concrete pillboxes just yet, make them from wood, throw some cloth and dirt over them. Try to camoflauge the things.
>>
>>21801150

Nice.

Construct the cages for now, although a full pillbox can wait. I was thinking more of a jersey-barrier type revetement on the firing line wall of the MG nest, supplemented by sandbags and wood.
>>
>>21801085
Hold up, can we check with eric whether the felling of trees will have any consequences?

I know some forests used to be kings land and you could get killed for cutting down trees there
>>
>>21801150
I think that we should see about expanding our operations to the manor when we have finished fortifying this base and have the manpower to spare

While it won't be as fortified as our base we can rotate men between the two places so that they are comfortable.

This will probably be at least two months away if not more I think
>>
>>21801187
Agreed, those cages can be useful for more than Kobolds and Ogres too.

And those protected wooden "pillboxes" should do just fine. Funny how >>21801194 came up with a similar idea.

>>21801208
Let him stop us. I'm all for trying to follow local custom, but considering that this Duke failed pretty hardcore as did Eric I doubt the they're in a position to do much to us. Especially when we can rain HE down upon them with 3 barrels of hell! (kinda)
>>
We should end Day three.

Early the following morning, we should prepare a escort for the Native toward the local barony. We could probably cover the distance and be back fairly quickly (perhaps even the same day).

These are the things we would require of a meeting with the Local Baron..

>Maps
>Military artifacts, like the ring for conversation
>A mage or magister or two, for the reading of and translation of the books.
>A neutral area for a meeting, a mile or two outside the camp (The foreign native will tell tales of our power and strength (perhaps not entirely accurately, as these things get embellished)). An experienced leader might judge our current position weak or precarious and that might affect our negotiations.
>Further develop our defenses.
>After development of CP, medical tent should be next.

Anyway, during the negotiations we should
>Establish ourselves through formal meetings
>Obtain maps and local political knowledge we can use to our advantage.
>Obtain permission to use area as we see fit. This is the Baron's lands and we are technically intruding. We need to be proper guests until we have what we judge as more than adequate strength to take on a several thousand strong medieval army.
>Assure the duke that we are not taking over. We are not hostile unless attacked.

And some other things perhaps that are necessary.
>>
>>21801208
agreed

Goodbye mien Komerades, I must complete an essay, or else my father will take my head!
For the Fatherland, my brothers! Lead us on to victory!
>>
>>21801239

Do you even combat engineer?

More important than functional armor right now, since this is a recce base, is a stable firing platform for our machine guns and some protection for them, hence a concrete barrier on the firing line with wood elsewhere, shouldn't take more than a few hours per nest.
>>
>>21801150
For moral perhaps we could get a music radio or two, I know we get so-so quality signal to the HQ via the gate but can we get actual radio station with news and music?

I think "Gun Emplacements" is a better term but the point still stands that me and this anon came up with the same idea. Spooky. Regardless I have to agree, any cages we built can be used for a variety of things, disciplining particularly unpleasant troops, holding local wildlife, maybe serving makeshift crates in times of scarcity.

>>21801139
Excellent, I figured Hans would be something of a problem child. What's one more minor commendation compared to the glowing praise of his commanding officers?

Oh and I'm glad to see we'll be defanging and declawing our captives so that they'll pose less of a threat, though we'll have to keep an eye on those ogres. Probably have to drug the lot of the Untermensch when it comes to transferring them through the gate. Oh well problems for the future right?

i also support this action. also, in reguards to the mini-deforestation plan, we could use it to build a basic wooden palasade around the main interiror of our camp.
also, we should consider installing an auxillary latrines, encase something happens to it again...

Aviation is a no no. Too much fuel consumption plus we'd need a runway. Considering we'd get supplied with fuel only once per month a NOPE is in order. Perhaps a small scout plane...

Don't forget folks that its 1939 - We are limited to early war equipment, even given our secret special unit status.
