Welcome /tg/ to the land of Zari. Brought to you by the makers of Zanzia!

The humble nation in the making, Zaritonia, requests your help! Yes, YOUR help! We are on the way to making a new Dictator & Politics Quest...but first we need to make the island itself!

So far we have the basic geology, ancient history hammered out. With colonial as a work in progress, which is what we need to finalize today. Remember /tg/, we're making a believable nation!

The following post will have what we have typed up so far...

Geological Facts:
-Large, Cuban-sized island
-Off shore barrier islands / reefs in some regions.
-Ocean with Coral and lots of Fishing spots
-Volcanic! At least one active shield volcano.
-A mountain range and some mountains hiding valleys.
-Mangrove Swamps in large amounts of areas, jungle in others. Vietnam meets Indonesia.
-Anything else suggested would be nice.
-Note: I will handle valuable natural resources. So you guys can discover them.

Pre-16th Century
-Mixed Ethnicity of local Indonesia and south east Asia.
-Island Religion worshiping Sky, Sea, Volcano, Swamp goddesses.
-Boat centric population due to swamps and ocean.
-Matriarchal Society, Women rule/council/bring life.
-Men work/war/sacrifice themselves to bring fertility in great festivals of sex. (During the tribal days. This can change in modern times.)
-A small empire was carved out sometime in 8th to 12th century AD.
-Suggestions for other things welcome.

Colonial Era
-Next post-

Future Facts
-We will eventually handle "modern" Zaritonia.
-Zaritonia will possible err towards Warsaw Pact during the cold war. -East Germany being a close friend more-so than Russia loving us personally.
-GDR ceasing existence with German Unification, the unified Germany will still keep friendly with Zaritonians.
-Allows for a mix of old soviet gear and access to modern capitalistic equipment/economy

Seeing as Glorious Zartonia is buddy-buddy with ze Germans during the Cold War, perhaps that hints at Germany colonizing the place. Just a matter of figuring out when that would have happened.

Re-Revised History to avoid "Why didn't Europe steam roll us!" and "Why German influence?" "Treaty of Versailles!!!"

PROPOSED Colonial history.
---------------------------------------

Colonial Era

15th - Chinese begin to settle in the area on the west coast islands/shores. Bringing their religion, language, and writing with them.

16th - British Empire colonizes the South West of the island.

16th to 17th - Series of diseases hit the island's native population and reduces them to a scant few. The Zaritonian "nation" dissolves into tribes. By the end of the 17th century, population has slowly grown back after Zaritonians build immunity to European diseases.

18th - Major typhoon hits, destroying what is left of the British colony's port city. Colony is abandoned. (See Pensacola: This shit happens!) Local population takes over inland township of [Name Me!] and her farms.

19th - The island is colonized by the Germans along with New Guinea.

World War 1: New Guinea taken by Australia but Zari is not. Zari remains a German Territory until the Treaty of Versailles is signed. Zari, being seen as a worthless jungle with scant resources is ignored by her neighbors for a decade. She maintains positive opinions with Germany, having not suffered ill with them.

World War 2: Having a positive, perhaps naive, trust of the Germans, Zaritonia allows Hitler to build an over-seas research facility here. Primarily to facilitate tech-trade with the Japanese (AKA: Keep an eye on them.) - Japan occupies the surrounding barrier islands.

MacArthur would of loved such a place and tried to spring board off it. Zaritonians could see the Allies as "negative" and lean to the post-WW2 GDR and Soviet Russia for support. Russia would LOVE this place as a power projection spot (Cuban Missile Crisis 2.0)

All of this is suggestions. You are welcome to pick it apart and discuss.
>>
>>21808289
Exactly. Germany has New Guinea in 19th and 20th, lost it in WW1 treaty. So easily could include us, giving us a German friendship.

"Native Recruits on Drill" from German New Guinea.

also

"To obtain a local labour force and expand plantation agriculture, the colonial officials sent the army to control tribal areas. They then imposed new laws requiring the natives to provide four weeks of labour a year, and pay a poll tax in cash. Often workers were rounded up and had little choice, but for the first time were paid wages. Some colonial officials, especially Albert Hahl, worried about a drastic depopulation of natives, so they tried to recruit workers from Southeast Asia. They had little success. After 1910 Hahl tried to minimize the negative effects of aggressive labour mobilization by prohibiting the recruitment of women in northern New Ireland and closing other areas to recruiting. The German planters protested and Hahl was forced to extend colonial control to unconquered areas to obtain additional workers."

So they did pay them for their labor. I would say that its possible that we got some goodies from them in a similar means. (Also flat out 'borrowing' it after they get kicked out post WW1.)
>>
>>21808480
Alright. Do we participate in the Great War in any capacity other than spectator(even if only an expeditionary force that gets decommissioned after the war, only to become mercs in the interwar period)?
>>
>>21808323

Wouldnt in modern times China and Japan love this spot as well? It looks to be the northern phillipines, and a major naval presence there can possibly interrupt a lot of trade and resource traffic going To Japan, Taiwain, Korea, and China. If China holds it, it can throttle pressure on Japanese home islands, and if Japan/America hold it, China would forever be beholden to US interests and trade routes.

It could potentially be a big powder keg since Japan in WWII needed to control Pacific sea lanes for resources.
>>
>>21808323

For colonial history, wouldn't it suit ambush warfare and tactics? I would love to add a portion there for Zaritonians to attack colonial settlers/hold them back from complete control of the island ala Boer war or something similar.
>>
>>21808502

In WW1 Germany got over-ran by Japanese Aussies. So we would be taken by Allied-Japan. Giving us Japanese ties leading into WW2...

>>21808512
By then yeah. WW2 we become important. I figure WW2 onwards we do 'serious' re-writes, but nothing that changes outcomes etc.

>>21808535
We can work with that, no reason some of the tribes have to be friendly.
>>
I imagine that most of our coast is pretty terrible swamp land, and the island only has one half tolerable place for a port or harbor, that would limit colonialism to only those willing to make a not insignificant investment in the area.

As a means of execution, the condemned is fed to crocodiles, the Goddess of the Swamp needs love too, so symbolically, the condemned also gets a hooker the night before.

Volcanic island...should be able to make Cordite without too much trouble...Now all we need is a source of copper, tin, iron, coal, zinc, and lead.
>>
one question I wanted to bring up was about local resources.
Im not sure really what grows in that area of the world but I was thinking we could have really big tobacco fields. It would provide a reason for Europeans to try and colonize as well a source of revenue and a reason for western corporations to take interest in our island in the modern era. Also I like the idea of having our own version of Cuban cigars (tobacco could also be a large part of our culture, like coca leaves to Peruvians or something). just some more food for thought.
>>
>>21809086
>>21809137
Mountains would offer some of those materials relatively easily. We could easily make local materials with the right industrial goods to work it.

I assume then the colonial years are acceptable and we should work with WW1/Industrial in focus now?

>>21809158
Guano would give them reason to bother. As would sulphate materials from the volcanic activities.

Hell, a lot of nations by the industrial age would loooveee our island...
>>
So... when the Treaty of Versailles was signed, the island gained independence? That's... not what that treaty did to all other German colonies.

Why not award it, at least temporarily, to another nation? Being passed around between Western powers like a bad fruitcake near Christmas could only strengthen the resolve of the Zari natives and culture against the more commercialized, jingoist countries of the Western world.
>>
>>21809246

No. It was forgotten and pretty much taken by the Japanese.

Wouldn't the size/location of the island mean it would have been quite useful during WWII? Presumably, we still have a lot of infrastructure built up by the Americans when they retook the place from the Imperial Japanese.
>>
After WW1 as a colony of Germany wouldn't we have been made an independent country under a mandate similar to the ones in the middle east? Most likely under french advisement? We might even have been given to Japan, though more likely made independent. Japan almost certainly would have invaded and controlled us during WW2 knowing that France had no chance of defending us and we would act as an amazing FOB for the rest of Indonesia. I don't think our topography would lead to many air or naval bases, and the few that Japan would build would have been destroyed by the US on their push to the Japanese island chain.

The awful terrain would have meant that the US would suffer large casualties in both the mountains and the swamps, so they would probably bomb the shit out of the main bases then clear the island on foot. I doubt the US would establish their own bases on the island, thought they might wish they did in the modern era because it would grant them an amazing position to regulate China's influence. They also would have been incredible useful during the Korean and Vietnamese war.

The French would likely have done the same as the British did with Palestine after WW2 and just abandoned us. Which would put us in a bad spot coming into modern history.

Just food for thought i suppose. As for natural resources, i would imagine we'd have a crap tonne of oil like New Guinea.
>>
But with our position so close to Japan, the Americans surely would have made at least rudimentary airbases and ports.
>>
On my way home
>>
Is it too late to write up an alternate colonial history idea?
>>
>>21810505

So i just had a look at some maps and the progress of WW2 in the pacific, and now i'm kinda in to minds about it.

We're a pretty large island so we would have a pretty substantial Japanese military presence and while we might be slightly closer to the Japanese mainland Iwo Jima would still be the best route to Japan actual, I wouldn't be surprised if it was mostly ignored by the US as Iwo Jima presents the more direct route as well as being more easily reinforced. The Japanese would likely have had to pull the majority of their defenses away from us to those islands in an attempt to retake them/reinforce them or pulled them back to Okinawa in the final stages.

That said after the US drops the bomb they would have had to occupy the island regardless of whether we were given to Japan or the French(they were in no position to look after it).

If that was the case i could see us becomming a much larger and richer Guam. The US could then project MASSIVE influence over all of asia.

As a side note i think we're on top of several islands and would also likely have territorial claim over the island chain that Japan and China are all pissy about at the moment.
>>
>>21810658
>>21810473

Actually i take most of that back. I had a look at what islands we were on top of and it was Okinawa so our island would have been the bloodiest largest battle of the pacific theater. Given the size of us it would have taken months if not years before the US would take it and the bomb would have been dropped before then. Hell if the resistance was large enough a bomb may have been dropped on us.

I think it's fairly certain they we would be covered with US bases, if not one of their territories like the Northern Marinas islands... My bad.
>>
>>21810743
>Zari is this worlds Okinawa, but much bigger
Perhaps it could overtake Stalingrad as the bloodiest battle of WW2? Would make the place a name known around the world for something.
>>
How about the Battle for the island becomes so extensive, that Soviet paratroopers end up being deployed to the island by the thousand. Eventually, the people side with the Warsaw Pact, and we get to keep our ties with East Germany?
>>
>>21810820

That would be very interesting but the doctrines used would be very different. Firstly neither side would have had the numbers to throw into the grinder like Germany and Russia did. I also doubt the cities on our island would have been large enough to support that kind of urban warfare. Not sure how the supply chains would be for either side.

An interesting idea could be that after US troops landed they were cut off from supplies by the Japanese navy and had to defend one corner of the island. Then the US break back through and cut the Japanese off and the dynamic reverses.
>>
>>21810743
>>21810820

We can do alternate history from WW2 onwards if we wanted. In regards to us. I dunno. We're just pushing ideas right now
>>
>>21810967

I don't see a way that could happen before the bomb drops. After that the outcome would be pretty much the same.

(Also i get that this is meant to be a bit of fun, but I like been super logical about this kind of stuff, if you want to make unicorns native to the island which allowed us to see off the Imperial Japanese advances i'll shut the fuck up and let you roll with it.)
>>

>>21810605
Sorry, if you've already got all your colonial ideas fleshed out, i just wanted to write some.

1565 – The Spanish East Indies are formed, including the island of Zari as the northernmost of the Philippines.

1683 – The Qing Dynasty conquers Taiwan [Formosa]. Seeing the relatively undefended island of Zari, they decide to invade the island as well, not knowing or caring that Zari is in name at least, a possession of Spain.

1684-1687 – The Qing invasion fails as local tribes and Spanish troops from Manila defeat the invaders in the jungles. The Spaniards found a city on the only passable harbor on the island. The town is named Viscaino after the East Indies' first ambassador to Japan.

1687-1898 – Even though Zari is in name a Spanish colony, more and more Han immigrants from Taiwan land on the island, sparking several revolts in favor of the Qing Dynasty. China never supports outright war with Spain, but acknowledges some control over the island

1897 – In a little known addemdum to the Tsingtao concession by the Chinese to the Germans was a right for the Germans to outright assume the Chinese claim to Zari in exchange for the sum of 5 million Marks.

1898 – Defeated in the Spanish-American war, Spain loses the Philippines to the United States. Zari is not included in the $20,000,000 purchase price for the islands and Guam, because of the constant revolts, and the fledgling movements towards either independence or a link to China.

1899 – Spain sells it's claim on Zari to the Germans in the German-Spanish Treaty of 1899.

1899 – Germany pays China 5 million Marks for complete rights to Zari.

January 2, 1900 – Formal news that China has abandoned Zari reaches the colonial capital of Viscaino [Needs a suitable German name], anti-western and anti-Japanese riots racked the city for nearly a month before the German occupiers seized control.
>>
>>21811046
Additionally, if there was a German presence on the island, such as that research facility as stated in >>21808323, it could have been the only place (to my knowledge) of an actual German/Japanese vs. American/Russian Battle.
>>
during the slow, bloody fighting going on in the swamp areas, the americans would have likely heavily deployed napalm to try and flush out gorilla activity (the inhospitiable nature of this island grafts this as the most probable military strategy especially if the MO is to hold off the americans from their assault towards japan)
the aftermath of this would be that due to the destruction of the trees and plantlife, vast areas of swamp were opened up as potential expansion zones. using old techniques, people who lost their homes to the fighting began to rebuild in similar ways to their ancestors.
this could be the center of the traditionalist movement could be, using the destruction as a sign to return to simpler ways of living
>>
>>21811143
1900-1914 – Germany starts to industrialize the island with ains towards it's eventual independence on German terms. The money being poured into Zari makes the natives turn away from their anti-German views some. The large addition of land causes Germany to station a larger fleet and more troops in the Pacific.

1901 – Viscaino renamed Von Bismarck, after the departed leader.

December 1914-February 1915
Following the successful siege of Qingdao by the Japanese and the retreat from New Guinea, Zari is the last remaining holdout of Germany in the Pacific. The joint Japanese-Anglo siege of Von Bismarck pitted roughly 35,000 Japanese, Australian, and British troops against roughly 7,000 Germans, and 20,000 Zarians and Chinese evacuated from Qingdao. The siege starts December 17th, and lasts almost 2 months, until a breakthrough from the Japanese force the troops out into the rugged countryside.

February 1915 – 1918
The war in Zari devolved into bands of commando fighting, as the German and Zarian troops on the island were forced to live off the land. In order to garner more support from the locals, German decreed that if native Zarians were to help keep the islands safe from the Japanese, that a firm date would be set for independence within the next 20 years [by January 1, 1936]. The island turned into a brutal occupation of Von Bismarck, while German units used the jungle to bleed Japan of manpower.

>>
>>21811849
I was wondering how WW2 would play out with the Zari/German relations. Is Zaritonia a U-Boat/Kriegsmarine base? Do we even get into the whole Nazi/Holocaust issue?
>>
Just noticed that the geological facts sections says it has an active shield volcano, this wouldn't happen because of the islands location on a destructive plate boundary, which don't form the high viscosity magma that makes shield volcanoes like those formed at constructive plat boundaries(Iceland) and interplate hotspots(Hawaii).

The large mountainous regions combined with the presumably large rainfall would make coral reefs less likely to occur as they don't tend to do well in areas with large terrigenous sources of sediments.
>>
>>21811849

I could see Germany scientists and high rankers either escaping, or being forcibly moved to Zari to escape the allies, especially if it's semi independent by WW2.
>>
>>21811926
What's in my head now is that Germany moves the independence date for Zari to 20 years from the end of WWI, so right around 1940. That gives them enough time to use Zari for a version of the "Madagascar Plan"

I doubt Hitler would want to fight with them assuming they would be a nation of mixed Han Chinese, Jews and Pacific Islanders, but they would at least be open to refueling by Axis forces, but their neutrality would mean America wouldn't attack them.

you are correct in pointing out the incorrect classification of the volcano. it is in fact a stratovolcano, as the lava is very viscous (you did make a small error in that shield volcanos have lava of low viscostiy, a.k.a. 'runny'). i am sure that this incorrect classification can be rectified quickly, easily and with no harm done.

and yes, i do happen to have qualifications in Geology... after all, 'Geology Rocks'

volcano goddess makes it possible guys. Get with the traditionalist/fascist parties program
>>
>>21812105

Yeah mistype, didn't notice.

Also reefs could form on the ocean side of the barrier islands with the lagoon/tidal flats area would become the grove regions and would have some pretty monster hydrocarbon deposits.
>>
>>21812099
have you ever done any work in relation to locating potential locations for oil fields?
also, appologies if i may have sounded obnoxious, it was more civilised in my head...

back to the subject of the volcano, i would assume that it is over a Hotspot as opposed to a subduction zone, and the lava is probably felsic.
>>
>>21812204

I've done some, but mostly in relation to marine environments, deltas and such.

Also wouldn't the volcano be andesitic like most of the region? I don't see how you could have an active hotspot that close to a destructive plate margin.

And you seemed civil enough to me.

I'd say we should go with alternate history and just start our game in WW2, but then we may end up with some boring things... or to much to track...or to much different from reality...

I love you all. I want to have your babies.

So hot-spot, with the Reefs on outside of islands, and marsges on insides of islands. That sounds like a BITCH to navigate.

Quick question (since the lack of knowledge about this area of the world is pretty apparent in this thread).

1. Why did China's motivation suddenly change from trade to colonialism?
2. Why did they not come into conflict with Spanish settlers and forces, the same way British settlers would have? British ambitions in that island cluster didn't come into play until well into the 18th century.
3. Is the primary culture Malay or pseudo Polynesian? There's a big difference.

>>
>>21813141
1. Dunno, stronger Tungning Empire following the invasion of Taiwan/Zari because of the extra land? China has an interest in quelling the rebellion and therefore becomes attached to the area?

2. In the TL I posted, they do come into contact with the Spaniards who consider the island part of the Philippines.

3. I would rather have them be pseudo-Han/Taiwanese with some German influence.
>>
>>21813350

I checked your timeline, and with the answer provided in 1. it all works out pretty well.

1: It isn't really colonization but more like fishermen finding new places to set up villages to fish from.

2: No Spanish ever settled here. However contact could of easily occurred.

3: Its own-ish culture. We're just going from scratch here and kinda making it up as we go along.
We're not SET in history yet. Make suggestions if you'd like.

All the pictures I have are either covered under need for operational security(The forward base I was at is still active and manned, with the same layout), Or things I can't or won't share with /tg/, Anything with my face in it, Gore(Casualty report photos), pictures of afghani friends I made and the like. Our Waffenfarbe is green, We use a different helmets than the rest of the heer for the most part, our berets are a burgandy color, my rank is Unteroffizier, we jump from C-160 aircraft and our beret badge is based on the original luftwaffe fallschirmjäger symbols.
Also, Have a picture of my crush because I feel like it.
